We talked to some folks filling up throughout the day. They say thats a Pricey Predicament they werent prepared for. 11. Im at 2. 5 gallons. Im from the 60s. 11, 11 gallons. Remember them days. Well, ask your parents . Its crazy. I feel like its a deterrent for people to travel. Thats what we want to do so much right now. Reporter shes right. Some people are traveling. Aaa says about 43 Million people are expected to drive somewhere this Holiday Weekend. Thats up about 34 compared to last year. Thats not the only problem. Theres pain at the pump for people who are not only flying as stephanie pointed out but people who are jumping in their cars and traveling either across the country or across town. Thank you. That is job well done. The spike in Holiday Travel comes as we saw a spike, unfortunately, in covid cases. Accord to the Cdc Director, the hyper transmissable Delta Variant is likely to blame. While this is a 95 decrease, lower from our peak into early january, it does also reflect a 10 increase in the 7day after R Average from last week. Great to see you. I was so interested in what the Cdc Director said that cases have ticked up 10 this week over last week. This is the first upward tick up that i remember in us reporting on in many weeks. Thats just going in the wrong direction. Do you think thats an anomaly or a Trend Line here . This was completely predictable. The pandemic is about improving vaccine confidence. Theres about 13,000 cases a day currently. Sorry to interrupt you. Were seeing that President Biden is taking the podium at the naturalization ceremony. Lets listen. Any family of the people just got sworn in here today . If you are, stand up. Congratulations to you all as well. Congratulations. Congratulations. Its a good day. If youre around on sunday, youll see the fireworks, the Fourth Of July. Our independence day. Mr. Secretary, thank you for administering the oath. I know how meaningful this event to you is personally and professionally. I thank you and the director of u. S. Citizenship and immigration services, tracy. There you go. Thank you very much. Today is special guest to all of you is my honor to congratulate the 21 of you earned the title of democracy is equal to being president. The same con consequence, citizen. Citizen of the united states. You each come to america from different circumstances, different reasons and 16 different nationalities. Unlike previous generations, theres one trait you all share in common, courage. It takes courage to get up and Lever Everything you know and go to another place no matter where it is. You know, the only homes youve ever known, lives, Loved Ones werent able to come. Just point out that im often asked by World Leaders that im with, particularly autocrats, how can i define america . I was with Xi Jinping and he asked me this. It was a private meeting, just he and i and translater. He said can you define america for me. I said i can, in one word. One word. Possibilities. Possibilities. America is built on it. Its one of the reasons why were viewed sometimes as being somewhat eggtiotistical. We believe anything is possible in america. I think about my own Familys Journey here. Twothirds got on a ship in the Irish Sea back in 1849. Having no idea whether they make it across the atlantic to the united states then to the united states of america. Certain if they did, they could do better. They did. They did better and they built a life and raised a family in scranton, pennsylvania over in generations. Here i stand at the shoulders and sacrifices of my great, great grandfather just all that they did. I want to thank yall for choosing us. Thank you for choosing the united states of america. Ive said that america is the only nation in the world founded on on a idea. Every nation in the world is founded on basis of Apology Grog Fi or ethnicity or religion. You can define almost every one else based on those char characteristics but you cant define america. I defy you to tell me what constituted an american. You cant do it. Were a diverse democracy. Theres one thing that does define us as a country. Were founded on an idea that we hold these truths to be selfevident that all men are created equal endowed by certain unalienable rights. Sounds corny to americans as we learn this in Grade School and high school. We never fully lived up to it but we never, ever walked away from it. Every generation opens that Aperture A Little Bit wider. Since our nations founding, the idea has been nurtured by the contributions and sacrifices of so many people. Almost all of whom were immigrants and Native Americans were in fact the only people who were here. Only people here. New vitality. New strength. Weve seen that most clearly during this pandemic with immigrants as Front Line workers and scientists and researchers. Landing the rover on mars. What is considered a sort of out of Space Wright brothers moment. I spoke to the team about this historic mission while it was under way, which includes immigrants. The team was made up of immigrants who told me they grew up looking at the stars, literally. Not a joke. Im not making this up. This is what they told me in our conversation. Looking at stars, believing that only america could take them th there. Well, we see it each and every single day. Folks, among you are six members of the united states military. I ask yall to please stand. Thank you. Thank you, thank you for your service. [ applause ] thank you. Folks, please stit. Pleads sit down. I was telling our new citizens in the other room before we came in that one of my most i dont know how soto say it, fulfilling moments as Vice President when i went over to husseins god awful gaudy palace and there were 167 men and women in Urine Father in uniform standing in that palace. My wife was with me. We both stood there as i was able to swear in every one of those military officers as u. S. Citizens. I thought to myself, what incredible justification for all the things that soddam didnt believe in. Not citizens when you join. One silver star, conspicuous service medals, purple hearts. I got to swear them in in the palace of a dictator. Also among them are Health Care workers and Front Line workers who went Above And Beyond the call in the fight against covid19. They did so in hospitals, educators, retailers. I want to thank yall for risking your lives to help others keep their country and our country going. Joining you today are your families. I want you to know and understand that this is your day as well. Can only imagine the pride you must feel. Pride in where you come from and who you are and the lives you built together as america, in america, and the communities that make you stronger. Make us stronger. All of you represent how immigration has always been essential to america. Constant renewing ourselves. Constantly. We come out of this pandemic and build it back better. Were going to do that, we need to fix Immigration System and fully tap the Talent And Dynamism in our nation. Ive kept my Commitment And Senate Reform Build to the united States Congress and include smart Border Management and a pathway for citizenship for 11 Million undocumented people in america. Vice president harris leadership, were getting at the root causes of why people are migrating for our southern border, guatemala and El Salvador in the first place. The families who came from countries set by manmade disaster. A pathway for Farm Workers who are here putting food on our tables but are not citizens. Ill close with this, no matter where you come from, the culture that is made us, the language we speak, the faith we follow, almost basic acts of respects is inviting others into your home. You know, as we close out immigration heritage month, and start our nations Fourth Of July weekend, i can think of no better way to honor each occasion than by welcoming all of you into the White House. The peoples house, i might add. Designed by an irishman. A nation shaped by the immigrants heart. I look forward to standing with you as embrace your rights as american citizens and as generations have done before you. Welcome, my fellow americans. Before we take the pledge together, id like to invite one guest. Sandra lenzy, please come up on stage. [ applause ] sandra immigrated from queens New York from jamaica when she was 18 years old. Over the past 30 years, she pursued her dream of becoming a nurse to allow her to do what she wanted to do most. Give back to her new country. She earned a Bachelors Degree and then a Masters Degree and then a Doctorate Degree and her citizenship. Now Shes Director of nursing for critical care at a hospital on Long Island and during the height of the pandemic, she poured her Heart And Soul into the workplace to help patients fight for their lives and keep fellow nurses safe. With grandson at home, prematurely, she did what she had to do. She kept her distance and kept him safe. He is safe. She lost an Aunt And Uncle through the virus. In her pain, she didnt lose hope. When the time came, she was the first person in america to get fully vaccinated outside of clinical trials. She can now hug her grandson. Shes out there making sure her patients and folks in her community are getting vaccinated so they can get back to their lives and Loved Ones. Sandra, if there are any angels in heaven, having spent a lot of time in icu, they are all nurses, male and female. Doctors let you live. Nurses make you want to live. Make you want to live. For real. The badge she wore will be included in the smithsonian History Museum of national history on covid19. [ applause ] it recognizes nationalized citizen who is have made significant contributions to our cou country, through participation, professional achievement and responsible citizen. Sandra, thank you for representing The Very Best of all of us. Thank you all in this room. Thank you again. This is america. Happy Fourth Of July. May god bless you all and may god protect our troops. Thank you. [ applause ] weve been Thelistening Thero preponderate President Biden representing a group of new citizens. Its 21 americans in that room some of them Military Service members who served oversaes and their families and President Biden there has singled out one immigrant from Ya Mayjamaica wo as a nurse. All of this is part a Big Push By The Biden White House to create 10,000 new citizens this next coming week in celebration of July 4th. Lets see if dr. Kahn still with us. Are you still there . Im sorry to have interrupted there you are. Thank you for your patience. When i interrupted us, i was talking about there has been an uptick this week in covid cases. Thats not the direction we have wanted it to go, obviously. So, i just dont know how alarmed to be by that. Is that a trend or an anomaly . No reason to be alarmed because youre fully vaccinated but no apologies needed. It reminds me of my father who lied about his age, jumped on a Cargo Ship for an opportunity to become an american. Thats a great story. Its an inspirational moment. Thank you for that. Cases are going up. Lets keep that in context. This is 13,000 cases. We peaked at 250,000 cases a day in the united states. Deaths are still coming down in the u. S. Now less than 300 deaths a day in the united states. Way too many. Really the story is a vaccine story. Most of the cases coming into hospitals now are unvaccinated. If youre vaccinated, youre protected. You really need to encourage people to get vaccinated. The vast majority of people dying are unvaccinated and going into the hospital. I want to show you this next one about how many adults are partially vaccinated in the u. S. As youll recall, President Biden wanted this number to be 70 by Fourth Of July. Doesnt look like well make that. Correct. Well probably be about 67, 68 vaccinated. Lets recall this is just a number on a push to get more people vaccinated. We had 154 Million people fully vaccinated in the united states. We need to continue to get those numbers up. If we continue to get the cases down, to be honest, the 200 Deaths Day would disappear if we increased vaccinate rates in the united states. I know youre a huge Mask Champion for people not vaccinated and before we were vaccinated, you talk about that a lot. Theres a lot of confusion about who is supposed to be wearing masks now. Let me play some of the conflicting information. If you are vaccinated and in the situation where you know youre protected against delta by about 88 against symptommatic disease and by over 90 against severe disease, for the most part you can feel safe without a mask, indoor or out door. I think its reasonable for parents living with kids vaccinated to consider wearing mask if they are in a high Risk Area or in a job that requires a high risk of exposure. Which one is it . Are parents supposed to be wearing a mask if they are in high Risk Area or not . Its poet. The science is spot on. If youre vaccinated, youre very well protected although not 100 protected but public health happens t a local level. If youre in a community with a lot of disease, right now i would say if youre in nevada, missouri, arkansas, wyoming, u. S. , places with three to four times more in the u. S. , absolutely. I would tell vaccinated people they should be extra cautious and wear a mask when indoors and protect themselves. We always appreciate talking to you. Thanks so much for sticking around with us. Always a pleasure. Thank you. Still ahead, the White House coming to the defense of Vice President harris after reports of dysfunction in her office. Is she being sabotaged . The White House was just asked about reports of rising tension between the staffs of the president and the Vice President. Axios reports that top White House officials rushing to defend Vice President harris but according to unnamed sources her team has had Pr Bungles and public Bickering And Infighting between her staff and the president s staff. One of the president s Senior Advisers said its a Whisper Campaign designed to sabotage her. Press Secretary Jen Psaki said this of the Vice President. I will say that the Vice President is incredibly important partner to the president of the united states. She has a challenging job. Hard job and she has a great supportive team of people around her but other than that, im not going have anymore comments on those reports. Lets bring in cnn political analyst. She has some reporting on this. Shes the managing editor. Margaret, are people trying to sabotage the Vice President . Good afternoon. The complaints exist inside the administration, the White House and democratic circles and in congress, but because the criticisms are anonymous its difficult for harris or the White House to figure out how to respond. Whether she keeps others at too much of distance and doesnt allow enough communication that would help the Vice President. The second concern goes to 2024 and its much more about or 2028 and its much more about the idea of whether the Vice President has the political instincts, the political chops to be the party standard bearer if for some reason President Biden decided not to run again although his staff say they expect him to. Why does this any matter . What does it add up to . The fact that the white House Chief of staff and a top Senior Adviser came out on the record last night to make these very definitive statements of support for the Vice President and calling it a when Iisper Campai what that tells me short of President Biden given a full throated defense, it signals thats what he wants to do. It signals whether or not theres problems and whether or not biden and his advisers are concerned about some of these problems that they do not rise to the level where he wants to embarrass her and what he wants is for everybody to quit their griping and get back to work. What we heard from supporters of the Vice President is like, look, were six months in. We have been operating under pandemic and President Biden is handed Harris Socme of the the most difficult problems in government, whether its fix the Migrant Problem or women in the Work Force going back after the pandemic. They are saying this is really unfair. What some of her backers say this is shaded by gender and racial concerns and as a reporter trying to cover this, youre trying to balance all of this to understand how much, it matters how much is real and how much is a political campaign but in The End, this is a pervasive topic of discussion in democratic circles around the White House. Thats what im trying to get at. Has she made significant stumbles that are noteworthy or is this unfair criticism . I do think Thats Part of the 64,000 question. Politics is perception. There are many donors in Democratic Party who support kamala harris. There are many activists in members who support kamala harris. The truth of the matter is there are these Fault Lines both inside the administration and inside democratic politics. She has her fans. She has her detractors and not very Vice President starts office in the opening months with this much kind of messiness and buzz. I think it is a Perception Problem at a minimum and how much of this is a bigger problem. I think we have to wait and see as time goes on as sochl these issues continue to unfold and as she is dispatched to be the president s voice whether it is in guatemala or whether it is on Network Television and views and whether its responding to the pandemic. Its politics. The perception does matter and your ability to bring your enemies into the circle and turn them into allies is up with of the crucial tests of every politician and right now the spotlight is on her. Thanks for entraining all this to us. We will continue to read your reporting. Still ahead, the investigation into the Trump Organization continues. Are the charges against the companys cfo The End or the beginning . Movie night. But if youre a kid with diabetes, its more. Its the simple act of enjoying time with friends, knowing you understand your glucose levels. This past year has felt like a long, long norwegian winter. But eventually, with spring comes rebirth. Everything begins anew. And many of us realize a fundamental human need to connect with other likeminded people. Welcome back to the world. Viking. Exploring the world in comfort. Once again. This isnt just a walk up the stairs. When you have an irregular heartbeat, its more. Its dignity. The freedom to go where you want, knowing your doctor can watch over your heart. The Diet Indictment of the Trumps Organization Cfo could be the beginning. The investigation into the former president s company will continue. On thursday the cfo was indicted on 15 charges related to an alleged 15year Tax Scheme Fp indictment also alleges that illegal activity involved other in unnamed executives for employees. They pleaded not guilty to all the charges. Great to see you. Lets start with the Trumps Organization Defense and basically what they say, last night Eric Trump, the son of former president went on tv and said something to the effect of fringe benefits, big deal. Yesterday, the Trump Organization attorneys went to the microphone and said this is a political prosecution because they say the Attorney General even when running for her post had said that she would get Donald Trump and they claim she doesnt like him or his politics. Do either of those defenses hold legal. Fringe benefits are no big deal. You just got to pay taxes on them. He left out that important clause at The End of it, which is when an employer pays 1. 7 million in income, thats what the indictment indicates with reflect Allen Weisselberg, you have to pay taxes. Everybody gets fringe benefits, parking spots, all kind of other things but you pay taxes on many, if not all of thoeds things. On the political point, prosecutors are elected officials but they take an oath to uphold the law and when an individual has broken the law as is clearly the case or allegations that are been demonstrated in the indictment, you move forward with those. The idea that merely someone is politically elected that they cant bring a fair or righteous charge, its nonsense. What about in the indictment where it referred to other employees, why havent they been indicted . Every time a prosecutor brings an indictment, they are free to supercede it down the road and either Add Indictments or additional charges. People might be cooperating. We dont know that. They may still be bringing Evidence But Number three they may not have provable cases against those people. Its a reality of prosecution that even when some times Prosecutors Believer people might do something and have evidence, they dont think they can win it in front of the jury. Any one of those options could be possible. Any way to know this is nearing The End or the beginning . I dont think theres a way to know. Youll know when there are convictions of Allen Weisselberg or anyone charges. I dont think Theres Way to know when The End might be coming. Theres a lot of speculation. We should stop the exercise in public thinking because Donald Trump or Eric Trump or who ever else hasnt been charged that this isnt a serious offense. This is an individual who is committed a major alleged to have committed major Tax Crime that will not sit well with jurors. Jurors dont respond well to that. Its a major company and its a sophisticated defendant. Even if no other charges come out, its still a serious point for the Trump Organization. Thank you. Thanks. Up next, a star u. S. This morning richard has this message for her fans. I would like to say to my fans and my family, my sponsorship and the haters too, i apologize as much as im disappointed, i know when i get on the track, i dont represent myself. I represent a community thats shown great Support And Love and to yall, i failed yall. I apologize for the fact that i didnt know how to control my emotions or deal with my emotions. During that time. Chris, lets start with a little more of the Back Story here. Richardson said the reason she used marijuana was because she found out from a reporter, that day, that her biological mother had passed away an had this deeply emotional response that she was trying to cope with. B bottom line, will she still be able to compete later this month or not . Its a really unfortunate story for the sport of Track And Field giving were carrying this momentum off of amazing performances and one of the biggest stars for the u. S. Is in limbo. Theres still a chance because the suspension is only going to run for one month and she accepted it this morning from the u. S. Antidoping agency which gives her chance still. Shes out of the 100 which is her marquee event but she can still run in the 4 by 100 meter relay. That all depends on usa Track And Field on whether or not they will add her to the team. What do we think will happen . Here is an interesting wrinkle. Marijuana is legal in Oregon Wheth where she was tested . Why is it a banned substance . Its banned because its legal in oregon and more than half a dozen states but this is the rules of the sport not necessarily the state or even what athletes who spoke cannibas endanger themselves and others because of increased risk taking, slower reaction times and just possible poor decision making. Thats why its on the banned substance list. Its been there for a couple of years but it does feel a bit outdated given that theres been so much legislation thats passed. The suspension for a positive test for marijuana, the maximum is only two years as opposed to getting four or five or eight years sometimes for more serious performance enhancing drugs. This one is a how is marijuana a performance enhancing drug . I mean, you know, this is the drug that gives you the muchies and makes you sleep on the sofa. How is it enhancing her performance . The studies that the world Antidoping Agency has done, i guess this kind of lean on the side that, yeah, it maybe makes you more focused, makes you a little bit more relaxed. But at the same time, it definitely does slow you down. Theres the pros and the cons to it. And its interesting because marijuana, you are allowed to have a certain amount in your system in competition. But that limit is 150 nanograms per milliliter. And you can take it just outside of competition. But this time around it mightve been a little bit too close for shacarris positive test. Ive seen some other players or former players basically say that its time for the olympics to get with the times. That other Sports Organizations have changed some of the doping rules around this. So, do we think that there is a push for that . And what does this mean for when shes off suspension, you know, four weeks from now . The pro for her is that shes young. Shes only 21 years old, theres probably a couple more olympics in her future. So this is just a bump in the road. And theres still the chance that she could be in tokyo on that relay team. As for the rule itself, im sure there is all this public outcry will, you know, make some noise and definitely hopefully make a little bit more of a change. But theyve definitely taken a closer look at the rules regarding some of these substances that are considered more substances of abuse as opposed to performanceenhancing drugs. Really interesting.
