Air base in afghanistan, in the air, right now. As a topu. S. General warns of a looming Civil War there, cnn is live on the ground. Plus, after Donald Trumps longtime moneyman is slapped in cuffs, prosecutors warn the investigation is far from over. Breaking overnight. A new clue into what may have caused the deadly Condominium Collapse in surfside, florida, and a battle of the billionaires, how Richard Branson is gunning to beat Jeff Bezos into space by a matter of days. All right. Good morning, to our view here, here, in the united states, and all around the world. It is friday, july 2nd. And the Breaking News overnight. A major Military Milestone for the u. S. In afghanistan. For two decades, Bagram Airbase was a symbol of the u. S. Presence there. The Nerve Center of u. S. Power. This morning, planes carrying the final u. S. Troops to be based at bagram lifted off. The full withdrawal of u. S. Troops from afghanistan, after nearly20 years, is said to be imminent. And this comes three months after President Biden announced his decision to end americas longestrunning war. Sources tell cnn the pace of the Troop Drawdown has caught many by surprise there. And in washington, there is concern about the taliban gaining ground in afghanistan. You know, such a symbol, anna, of the u. S. Presence there, over the last two decades. Where, in some ways, the u. S. The entireu. S. Presence has been coordinated out of. It is very significant there are no more u. S. Troops there, at this point. Yeah, thats right, john. The last planeload of u. S. And Coalition Forces left Bagram Airbase at 6 30 a. M. , this morning. There were two flights, overnight. And then, that final flight, this morning. But as you say, this wraps up americas longest war. Certainly, their their physical presence. Training, assisting, advising afghan nationalsecurity forces. They have handed bagram back over to the afghans. We know that there are 4,000 afghans in place at bagram. They have moved in over the past few months. Ever since President Biden announced that america was going to be pulling out of afghanistan. It, certainly, has caught many by surprise. You know, this was shrouded in secrecy, obviously, for security reasons. But but also because of the optics. You know, this is not something to celebrate. Yes, this has been a long war. But it it comes, at such an enormous cost. You know, the Blood And Treasure that has been spent here. 2 trillion. More than 1,200 Coalition Forces. Not to mention the more than 100,000 afghan lives that have been lost during this conflict. And the Tens Of Thousands of afghan forces that have, also, died on the battlefield and continue to die. You know, america is leaving at a time when the taliban are making extraordinary advances across the country. This offensive that they are launching in the north has caught the government and forces by surprise. We met with dr. Abdullah yesterday. Was head of the Peace Talks between the afghan government and the taliban. And he said that this has come as a shock. That the taliban is gaining momentum. The country the Security Situation certainly is deteriorating and there will be dark days ahead. John and poppy. And that, also, means imminent threat for the more than 18,000 interpreters and translators who worked alongside u. S. Troops, u. S. Diplomats. U. S. Congressmen Seth Molten told me, yesterday, this about any plan for evacuating them to the united states. Have you seen a plan, congressman, that makes you confident . No, ive not seen a plan, yet. Nobody, to my knowledge, an capitol hill, has seen a detailed plan. We need a plan that explains, exactly, where these men and women, these heroes, are gonna go. How were going to get them to the airport. I need an assurance, from the White House, that no matter how long this takes, well see the mission through to completion. We cannot leave anyone behind. How imminent, anna, is the threat to them, this morning, from the taliban . Yeah. Look, certainly, i mean, the taliban, 10 to 15 kilometers on the outskirts of kabul, the capital, where we are here. And there are a lot of people, lot of Local Afghans who are concerned about their the security, their safety because of their work with americans and Coalition Forces over the last20 years. As you heard just then, there isnt a Firm Plan as to what to do. We know that there are 18,000 applications that they have been some that have been identified. And, obviously, the process is under way. But this is a gargantuan task, ahead. You know, and then, there are people who fall through the cracks. Who who dont meet the criteria, perhaps because of technicalities. And some that we are learning have, already, been harassed by the taliban. And are deeply concerned about their safety. You know, its not just the people who work with americans. Its the Local Afghans, as well, who cant get a Visa And Travel to another country. There there is almost like an exodus of people wanting to leave this this country. Educated people who, perhaps, for the future of afghanistan. They say, there is no future for them here, anymore. Poppy. Anna coren, thank you for your reporting on the ground, very much. There is new Cnn Reporting this morning, about president Bidens Determination to complete the withdrawal from afghanistan. And, of course, as poppy was saying, fears about what the u. S. May leave behind. Cnns Natasha Bertrand joins us, now, with that. This is something that biden has believed in, for years. And he seems to be falling through, at this point, no matter what. For years, john, dating back to, of course, when he was the Vice President and he was arguing with the thenpresident obama about standing up, in his words, to the military. And getting out of afghanistan. Of course, now, he actually has had the power to follow through on that. And there is no second guessing going on inside the White House, were told, about this withdrawal. Now, the pace of the withdrawal has caught some in washington by surprise because it was originally supposed to be completed by september 11th. That is the date the president had put on it for the last troops to withdraw. But as we are seeing this morning, Bagram Airbase is being completely devoid now of u. S. Troops. They are traveling back, now, to the united states. And that really marks The End of the american presence. The robustamerican presence in afghanistan. There will be some troops there that will remain to guard the embassy. But that really is a symbolic move showing that the american presence there has ended. And so, what were hearing is that the White House was really boxed in, they feel, by the previous Administrations Commitment to the taliban that they would be out by may 1st. And how the White House is feeling about this is, well, if we kept the troops there any longer, then they would be attacked. They would be put in danger. Lot of things remain outstanding, though, as the pace of this Withdrawal Kind of picks up and as we reach this critical Turning Point Today and into next week. Including the fate, of course, of those afghan translators, of the afghans that helped american troops over the last two decades of war there. The fate of kabul airport, whether the turks are going to be helping americans secure that so its not overrun by the taliban. And, of course, the future of Counterterrorism Operations in afghanistan. Whether or not the u. S. Is going to be able to carry out Counterterrorism Missions there, given that all of our bases are no longer going to be available. So having to find those military bases in and around afghanistan is another kind of big feat that the biden administration has not, yet, worked out, yet. Natasha bertrand, thanks so much for being with us this morning. A milestone, indeed. All right. This morning, new York Attorney general Letitia James is warning the investigation into the Trump Org Organization is not over. Saying more charges could come. This, also, following prosecutors charging the former president s business and its chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, with operating a 15year scheme to defraud the government. Donald trump taking a page from a familiar playbook, attacking prosecutors and their charges as politically motivated. Joining us now, investigative Reporter And Author of the book, its even worse than you think what the Trump Administration is doing to america. David cay johnson, good morning. Thank you for being up early with us. Good morning. I want to get your take on the response and the pushback from the trump organization. Because there was a key statement. A Key Line in their statement that you say is just a flatout lie in response to this. Explain why. Well, the assertion is that cases like this are never brought. We dont bring nearly enough taxfraud cases in this country, at the federal or state level. But we bring cases like this all the time. And this is gardenvariety tax fraud. Very calculated tax fraud, poppy, including keeping two sets of books. So, trump is essentially just lying that nobody would ever bring a case like this. Thats absurd. He is, also, by The Way, saying hes special. You know, people like him shouldnt have to face penalties for stealing from the rest of us through tax fraud. Well, explain the history here. Why does having two books matter so much . What does history indicate it can mean . Well, this is how a lot of mobsters, back to al capone, have ended up in prison. You keep one set of books that you know, internally, what you have paid to people. What you owe to people. And you keep another set to show the Tax Authorities and your official accountants. And it is a badge of fraud, and that they did it here is kind of surprising because they probably didnt need to do so, given weisselbergs longtime knowledge at after 48 years with the trumps. What do you make of Ag Letitia james saying there could be could be more to come . Oh, i think, there absolutely will be. While in theory, Allen Weisselberg is facing 15 years in prison, if convicted, there is no requirement for any prison, if he is convicted. And the reason they brought this case was to put pressure on him to flip on Donald Trump. Allen weisselberg is a wholly owned psychological subsidiary of Donald Trump. It will be very difficult for him to break. I expect they will eventually bring a stateracketeering charge. And may bring other charges along The Way to increase the pressure on weisselberg. And as they develop more evidence from the roughlymillion pages of documents that they obtained. Because i would think, and i think a lot of folks would think, well, you lead with the big fish, right . Or or or or the trump card, forgive the pun. But this Grand Jury can meet, i think, still, three times a week through january. So, maybe, they didnt lead with the biggest one here . Well, its also not uncommon that you build cases by starting at the bottom of the pyramid or with the little fish. And you work your way up. The big problem here is Donald Trump doesnt keep records. He tears up his calendars at The End of the month. He doesnt use email. So, you dont have the usual records that would allow you to bring a case against trump easily. They can still bring a case against trump, but it will be a lot easier if Allen Weisselberg decides that his best interests and his moral duty are to tell the truth. David cay johnson, thank you. Thank you. Next, republican leader Kevin Mccarthy denies threatening members over joining the january6th committee. But makes an accusation about Liz Cheney. Plus, breaking overnight. But there are no members appointed by republican leader Kevin Mccarthy. At least, not yet. Liz cheney is the solerepublican name to the committee but she was appointed by speaker pelosi. Cnn has reporting that mccarthy said he would strip any members who accepted an appointment from pelosi, from their Committee Assignments. Now, he denies that. But he had this to say about cheney. I dont know, in history, where someone would go get their Committee Assignments from the speaker, and expect to have for the conference, as well. I was shocked that she would expect something from speaker pelosi. It would seem, to me, since i didnt hear from her, maybe shes closer to her, than us. I dont know. Joining me, now, formerrepublican congressman from florida frances rooney, congressman, thank you so much for being with us. Isnt this, literally, and demonstrably, putting party before country for Kevin Mccarthy . I mean, Liz Cheney is accepting a position on a committee to investigate an insurrection. And he is saying she should put her party first. Yeah. Its even worse than that. Its putting trump above party and country. This its its all about him, and the one more step by by kevin and the other republican leaders to do whatever trump wants, and not take any chance of of incurring his wrath. It just seems particularly brazen, to me. And i am hoping you can explain how he feels comfortable, mccarthy, doing this. Cnn has reporting that he threatened to strip Committee Posts from any member, who accepted an appointment from pelosi. And this is the same guy, by The Way, who was against stripping Committee Posts from marjorie taylor greene, who hasnt done anything to punish Paul Gosar or Andrew Clyde or anything like that. So so you can cozy Up To white nationalists and Holocaust Deniers and keep your committees but not serve on a committee to investigate the insurrection . But, you know, there is no great of principle in the congress. And to me, it results from the almost futile power that trump has over the republican party, now. And they are taking these very strange actions, as youre commenting about, to keep him happy. And to go from 35 republicans voting for an independent inquiry, one month ago, to now two. Shows the heats been turned up. Um, we talk about this level of partisanship in this really new page some ways in partisan politics in the country. I want to actually show something that is the opposite of that. Because frankly, we need it. President biden went down to florida, your home state, yesterday. Went to miami to visit with the families of the Condominium Collapse there. And he met with Ron Desantis, the republican governor of florida. Partisan. And look, democrats and republicans and Ron Desantis may very well but the two of them managed to have an important moment of bipartisan and i want to play that for you. You recognize the the severity of this tragedy, from day one, and and you have been very supportive. Were letting the nation know that we can cooperate. Its really important. You know, i think what was so striking to All Of Us is the reminder that this can happen. People can just go do their jobs, congressman. Yeah. Unfortunately, it takes a horrendous disaster to to bring about a bipartisan moment, like you just mentioned. I am thinking of when Bill Nelson and Marco Rubio turned the damage after hurricane, a very similar vignette but it took a hurricane to get there. Do you think there will be any repercussions . I remember governor of florida, a republican at that time, he embraced Barack Obama and that was it for charlie chris. I mean, he was he was no longer welcome at the republican party, after that. Will desantis be punished for this . Oh, no, i dont think so. This is a little different. This is a very a natural or unnatural disaster where a lot of people lost their lives. And the president has a role to play. And the governor of florida has to role to play to help draw the president in. And i think ron did exactly the right thing and and continues to show his leadership in florida. It was nice to see, on both sides of it. Just that they could keep politics Out Of It, even for just a moment. Congressman, you are also a former diplomat and i want to get your take on the major news, overnight, that the lastu. S. Troops who were based at Bagram Airbase. Bagram, a symbol of u. S. Power for two decades, the last troops have left that airbase. How do you feel about that . What are your concerns about security in afghanistan going forward . Well, it was really really, an unfortunate thing that we tried to create a democratic country in an area where there werent institutional elements capable of sustaining it. And i dont think theres much difference in afghanistan now, than there was 20 years ago. They dont have much of an economy. They are basically controlled by tribes. And the taliban. And its going to generate into the same kind of problems that were there before. In fact, the same problems have been there, anyway. We didnt make a lot of Headway South of kandahar in the last 20 years. So i would just say lets get lets move on and pay attention to our own problems for a while. Congressman frances rooney, it is a pleasure to have you. I hope you have a nice Fourth Of July weekend. Happy birthday, america. You, too. Thank you very much. Coming up. [ Me And You by barry Louis Polisar ] Me And You just singing on the train Me And You listening to the rain Me And You we are the same Me And You have all the fame we need indeed, you and me are we Me And You singing in the park Me And You, were waiting for the dark this morning, really troubling New Details about the extensive Concrete Damage discovered at champlain tower south, last fall. And why work was not performed to fix it. According to documents, first obtained by Usa Today, a Consulting Firm hired to investigate And Remediate The Building wrote, in october 2020, quote, full Restoration And Repair work could not be performed because the pool was to remain in service for the duration of the work. And because the necessary, aggressive Evac Evacuation of concrete at the pool could affect the stability of the remaining adjacent concrete constructions. Joining me now is usa reporter Usa Today reporter, who broke that story first, thank you for being here. This is critically important and tragic, all, at the same time. When i read that, i think they wanted to keep the pool open. And and so, they didnt fix it. Is that a correct reading . So, i think the important thing is to understand that, this is not a smoking gun. We havent found that one, critical piece. Uhhuh. And an investigation is still underway. But what this does point to is the fact that that the owners of the building were being Spoon Fed information, and that decisions were being made that could seem that these these issues were not as dire, as we now know that they were. Right. There is, also, this statement from the from the consultants, who came out with that assessment. This is morbido consultants saying they did their job, just as they have done for nearlyfour decades. They will continue to work with the investigators to figure out what happened. Um, how how are the families responding to this . Because its this 2018 report. Then, its this october2020 finding. Then, its the april, 2021, assessment letter. Just, there were so many warnings. So, this is incredibly tragic. I have been speaking to families all week. And, you know, they theyre going back and forth, between trying to get the bodies of their loved ones. Or trying to find out if if theres anyone, who is still al alive. And that pain. And at the same time, you know, theyre theyre going through they are telling me, like, you know, my mom would tell me that something was wrong. And that she didnt trust this Condo Association. Like, there there are all these grievances. And and what they have actually told me is that their Family Members did not shy away from wanting to pay for the work. And wanting to do the work. But they had a lot of questions about the integrity of the Condo Association and the integrity of the service providers. Romina, did their questions get answered . Or did they feel stonewalled when they would, i assume, went to the board with these questions . Well, i think, you know, based on the documents that Usa Today has been able to obtain, at this time, you know, there was a moment where they would be stonewalled. Such is the case of this woman, who is now a plaintiff in one of the classaction lawsuits that that were presented this week. They were stonewalled but there were changes, as well, in the Condo Association. But from what we are seeing, you know, that that information trickled in. And from what we know, possibly, too little, too late. Look. Your reporting on the ground is invaluable, in all of this. So thank you for for taking the time to help us understand it. Thank you so much. John. This morning, new data from the cdc shows coronavirus cases in the united states jumped, 10 , this past week. And the Delta Variant, which we know is about 60 more transmissible, is gaining ground. Joining me now is cnn senior data reporter, harry enten. Harry, its been some time, since we could say this. But cases, on the rise in the united states. Yeah, john. You know, we have been pulling up this map, a lot, because we like to see a lot of green. That means cases are dropping in this week, versus the previous week. Now, we are actually seeing more red and orange than we are seeing green. Which indicates that, in more states than not, specifically really in the southern part of the country into the great plains, that cases are rising unfortunately. Rising but, still, low. Yes. So, you know, look, its all relative. And whats important to point out here is look how high cases were at the beginning of the year. Look at that. We were basically getting 250,000 new cases on the sevenday average. Even here, you can barely see the rise. If you really zoom in, you can see it. Its that 10 . But when your numbers so low, you can have a Percentagecase Rise and the total number of cases that rise is not actually that great. This is i mentioned it coming in this is largely about the Delta Variant. Thats exactly right. And, you know, i want to make a comparison here, between the united states and the United Kingdom. Because in the United Kingdom, the Delta Variant, right now, is king. We know that its proportion is 99 of the circulating virus in midjune in the United Kingdom was the Delta Variant. Its just 76 26 here, excuse me. That is rising, right . But its significantly lower than the United Kingdom. Why is that important . Because, in the United Kingdom, what we are seeing currently is we are seeing that case rise. Look at this. The United Kingdoms in red. The united states is in yellow. What you see here is look at this we see the United Kingdom going up. We see the united states staying fairly steady. Ri rising a little bit. So it wouldnt be surprising if the united states sees that eventual rise like the United Kingdom has. The Delta Variant is more transmissible and you can see it leading to more cases in the United Kingdom. The yellow line, the united states, might end up looking like the red line, the United Kingdom, going forward. There are some other things, though, we are learning from the United Kingdom which are, i dont want to say, encouraging but may temper some fears. Right. This is sort of Bad News and then, okay, maybe its not as bad as we might think. And this is coronavirus deaths. The sevenday average, right . The change in it. What we see again, United Kingdom in red. United in yellow. Yes, there should be some lag, from deaths to case from cases to deaths. But here, in the United Kingdom, look at that. We really havent seen the rise in deaths. We really havent seen the rise in hospitalizations, either. Now, the question is why is that . Who is most vulnerable to coronavirus . We know its older folks. Take a look here. This is a proportion of age 65 plus who are fully vaccinated. In eveninngland, its 94 . Its huge. Its even bigger than here in the united states. Even here in the united states, its 78 . Im not sure we will necessarily see the same Trend Line cases translating into deaths the same way early on in the pandemic. What is the number one thing you can do if you want to protect yourself from the Delta Variant . Get a vaccine, my goodness, gracious. They are out there, folks. Moderna, pfizer, we know they work. We know it protects you against the Delta Variant. Its just the smart thing to do. Oh, my goodness. Just do it, folks. Its going up among unvaccinated people. Dont want to go up . Get vaccinated. All right, harry, thank you very much. So Virgin Galactic making a big announcement overnight. Why Richard Branson may, now, beat Jeff Bezos into space. Plus, a new development in Britney Spears legal fight. Why the coconservator for her estate just asked to quit. Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name and theyre always glad you came welcome back, america. It sure is good to see you. Developing overnight. Virgin galactic making a Surprise Announcement that the companys billionaire owner, Richard Branson, will attempt to fly to space just over one week, nine days to be exact, before another billionaire, Jeff Bezos, plans to launch. Rachel crane is live in Los Angeles with more. Good morning, rachel. All right. Youre the billionairespace whisperer, if you will. Whats going on . Well, poppy, this announcement from Virgin Galactic is a stark departure from what the company was maintaining just a month ago. Now, thisupcoming Test Space Flight was supposed to be just for Mission Specialists and branson was going to be on the flight, following that one. However and that was something the company maintained just a month ago. However, that was before bezos, himself, announced that he would be on his space company, blue origins, First Suborbital Flight to space on their new shepherd system. As you pointed out, that flight is scheduled for july 20th. Just nine days following the announcement of when this Virgin Galactic flight will take off. Um, but, you know, it might not just be egos here and the desire to be the Historicfirst Billionaire in space, that is a reason for this update to the flight manifest. The faa, just last week, granted Virgin Galactic a new license to fly spaceflight participants. So, prior to this updated license, the company had only flown pilots, as well as one Virgin Galactic employee. But now, with this new license, they are able to fly what they call spaceflight participants. So now, they can extend this invitation to branson. But take a listen to what branson had to say about this upcoming flight, poppy. Astronaut 001 Richard Branson. Ill be evaluating the customer Space Flight experience. As the Virgin Galactic founder, i am so proud to have this remarkable crew of Mission Specialists and pilots by my side as we fly to space. Poppy, let me tell you a little bit about that Flight Experience that branson and his fellow passengers will experience. They will go, you know, travel more than three times the speed of sound. Going over 80 mile kilometers above earth. While they will experience a few minutes of weightlessness, which i am incredibly jealous of. To they will get those Astronaut Wings and then they will glide back to earth. Now, following the flight, the team will do, obviously, a series of inspections and data reviews. They intend to fly two additional Space Flights before they open the company Up To commercial flights, in 2022. And the company expects to livestream this upcoming Space Flight for All Of Us to enjoy. So, although were not in the cabin, hopefully, you know, getting eyes in there, it will feel like it, poppy. You know, rachel, you say it might not just be egos. Im going to take the under on that, and say it is. I am. I just at this point, all these billionaires trying to get to space, first. I hope theyre being safe. Do i Sense Envy . Not with look do you want to go . No, absolutely not. Frankly, because i feel like this kind of race could lead lead to strange things. I mean, if it were sweeps and an assignment, i might do it. But no, look. I its its its all ego. Richard branson walking slow motion, you know, through through the thing there. You know . But i know you want to go. I know you want to go. Im dying to go and i have to push back, a little bit. You know, Richard Branson. They have been working on this for 16 years. Blue origin. Theyve been working on it, you know, the company was founded 20 years ago. So this is not just something, that they have just decided, on a whim, to get into. They have spent, you know, hundreds of millions of dollars into these programs so its not something that i think is just motivated by ego and branson, himself, has told me, continually, that this is not really a race that they are not motivated by being the first. That thats sort of how outsiders have have, you know, framed this billionairespace race. But that they would fly when they were ready, when he was ready. And the company deciding, now, that, you know, in just over a week, that branson will be making this historic flight. I will be speaking to him, in about an hour or so i will get some more insight into what motivated this this update. But certainly, a lot of excitement in the space world, in the coming weeks, poppy. Very humble people, we are talking about here. Each each and every one of them. Lots and lots of humility to go around there. Rachel, thank you. We cant wait to see your interview with Richard Branson. I know this is a big, exciting day for you, as well, covering this. Thank you.
