Reports of leaks and flooding go back decades. Its not clear if they contributed to the disaster. And breaking news, moments ago cnn obtained a letter sent by the Condo Board President to the residents of the collapsed Tower Warning about the severity of the damage prior to the collapse and the urgent need for repairs. That letter was sent in april of this year, just two months ago. The champlaign tower, observable damage in the garage has gotten significantly worse since the initial inspection in 2018. The Roof Situation got much worse so extensive Roof Repairs had to be incorporated. The letter seeks to explain a 15 Million Price Tag for repairs, much higher than the initial scope of the 2018 work estimate. I am joined now by the mayor of surfside, florida, Charles Burr get. Mayor, thank you for joining us once again. We are looking at the letter sent by the Board President in april, two months ago, saying the situation getting much worse just in the last three years. How does that strike you . Well, its all starting to come together now because as ive said all along, i mean, there was something very, very wrong at this building. Buildings in america just dont fall down like this. This is a Third World phenomenon, not a first world phenomenon. I think were going to see many things like this come out. Its pretty frustrating. Its even maybe more than frustrating. You see what they were told in 2018. You see what they knew in 2018. And then to hear the condo talking about it just two months ago is even worse from then. I think No One its hard to imagine anything causing a building like that to fall down, and i think from the perspective of a condominium association, which is just like a homeowner, except bigger, you know, they probably dont grasp the intensity of the issue, and probably didnt. Probably just thought it was a pro forma sort of operation, we have to get around to doing. Obviously that was a fatal mistake. Listen, you were just onsite a little while ago. Correct. And you told me there is new concern about debris falling from the part of the building yeah, theyve moved they put a little bit of a line on the pile of debris because they did have overnight they did have some stuff falling down from the building thats still standing. And thats going to have to be addressed. You know, i understand from my discussions over the past few days that they will address that, cut them, tie them to the pieces of the crane and remove them so its safe for the workers to get down in there. Thats hindering work in one area. You saw another area. There are waves of Men And Women, i was told there are about 100 people on the pile right now with Hundreds Waiting Standing by to get up there as those Men And Women tire out. So, im not too concerned about the manpower issue. I just want to be able to keep working. You know, weve got some Lightning And Thunder right now and, you know, it may go as fast as it came. So were just praying for that to happen. Any update on victims found . You know, i Cant Comment on that. Okay. Out of respect for the families because were going to go up at 9 30 and were going to talk to the families. They find out news first. I appreciate that. And i can come back and give you that update. Finally, last question here. I do know also there is an update on the north tower, the Sister Building to this. Yeah. We have i have, you know, weve worked with our partners. We have funding in place now for anyone that wants to relocate out of that building who is fearful because, remember, thats the same building, same contractor, potentially same materials and On And on. And people are afraid. So if they want to move, were going to support them. Were going to get them out until the inspections are done, which is probably going to take two or three weeks. And then well know with more certainty whether that building is safe or is not. Mayor charles burkette, thank you for joining us. Your communication is so helpful to us and the community. The names of all 11 victims have been released. They range in age from 26 to 82. They include a father of two and a mother whose 15yearold son was pulled from the rubble alive. Last night a Beach Side Vigil was held to remember the victims and pray for those still unaccounted for. One man whose Mother And Grandmother are still among the 150 missing is holding out hope and demanding accountability. Its shocking that they allowed it to get into this. Its negligence and their negligence caused a lot of death here. Its very difficult not knowing and really the only hope i have is that they find them, we can have some kind of proper burial, some kind of closure, and hope that they investigate this and the people responsible are held to be responsible, theyre held to be accountable. We are also hearing incredible stories of survival, a twist of fate that saved lives of the residents who might very well have died in thursdays building collapse. Erik mora lived in this building three years. He should have been home Wednesday Night. But because his Girlfriend Fernanda insisted he stay at her apartment, erik is alive today. Eric and fernanda join me now. So glad youre here. Its a miracle in many ways. You stayed at her apartment Wednesday Night because of a Soccer Game basically. Explain. Yes, that day there was a Soccer Match between brazil and colombia. We had some friends over. And i went there. I was supposed to come back home because i had some appointments in the morning. And i was right at the door about to leave and for some reason she just asked me to stay because one of her kids wasnt home. So we were going to have a little date. Usually on wednesday we dont have a chance to spend time together. So i was very uncomfortable because my clothes were all wet because i had to jump in the water to get a soccer ball. I wanted to come home. Its very chilly, very cold here. I wanted to take a shower and be comfortable. But she kept insisting for me to stay. And at 5 30 i checked my phone to set my alarm for my appointment, i had some notifications telling me that the building had collapsed. So thats how you found out. You woke up and checked your phone. Yes, thats how i found out. Messages from people asking what . A message from friends, but there was one particular message that got my attention. Its from rochelle who works at the building and the message was at 3 30 in the morning asking if youre okay. I got really surprised. Why is she texting me at this time ask asking if im okay. Thats when she sent me i called her. She said thank god youre alive. I said, what happened . The building collapsed. So, youre half awake and half asleep, and somebody tells you your home collapsed. A building in miami. You just dont believe it. So you wake up. And what does he tell you . My building collapsed. Everything gone. And i couldnt believe because its so unreal that a building like this he could be there a few hours before, and when he told me the building was collapsed, i mentioned something different, like some accident. No, the building fall. And i cant believe the reason hes alive is god. God protected him in that moment because its impossible you be here. Every other Wednesday Night he would have gone back and slept in his own apartment . Every day he goes back home. He want to go back home. Stay this night. I asked him that morning, when . Wednesday we had a chance to be alone. Its unusual. But many things happened that night, special. Youre here now because of her in a way and the brazilian soccer team. Yes. Listen, you know so many people in that building. My first reaction after letting her know, letting fernanda know about the collapse was driving here. And for some reason i come here like two or three times a day. Some delusional way i think theyre going to tell us go back home. The building is going to be there. Yes. We are in a hotel. All the residents, all the survivors are in a hotel on 92nd street, and theres a lot of sadness, but there is also joy of the people who are all right. And a lot of pain because from all the people that are missing, we are friends with some of them. Sure. Some of them we saw every day. And even though we and our family, we saw those people almost every day. Some of them we chat. We join the pool and the beach together. So theres definitely a lot of pain at this moment. Im very grateful to be alive, but very sad for the tragedy of everybody. Whats it like to look at The Hole where the building was . Its disbelief. You know, im heartbroken. Its very painful to watch. Its very sad. Who could believe something like this could happen here . Anywhere. Im from brazil, and it happens once in a while. It wouldnt be such a surprise. But here we know about the law and how america is supposed to be fair. In an area like this, even if it was somewhere else, but in an area like this, how could you imagine something like this happening. He talks about looking at where the building is supposed to be and being in disbelief, the building is gone. When you look at him now, he should be gone. When you look at him, whats that like . Happiness, grateful to be alive. Each season of the day can change your day, can change your life. I feel an intention, hes here for this reason. Something ordinary chance is extraordinary in my life. How long did it take you to let everyone know who messaged you . There had to be so many people who know exactly where you live. You know, ive been getting so many messages from friends, from people that i dont know, which is very touching for me. The kind words of people that i dont even know. And every day im getting message. Every hour i get surprised by people i havent seen in a long time. They either saw in the news or some of them recognized the balcony that i used to take pictures of the sunset or the Sunrise And Post on my Social Media. What are you going to do with this now . Youve got to be very honest with you, from the bottom of my heart, i dont know. I havent realized what happened. I havent cried. I feel like im in a movie and the movie is going to end sometime soon. I spent the whole day in the apartment. From the time i left to her house to watch the game to the time the building collapsed, its seven hours. I just live day to day, you know. Not being home is extraordinary because that was my home. That was my home. Im so glad youre here. Im so glad you have Each Other. Im so glad you made him stay that night. Youre going to need Each Other i think even moreover the next few days because this isnt easy. This is going to be so hard. Yes. Its a difficult situation for everyone involved. My heart and my prayers go out to the families. We feel what they feel right now. We have prayer. You hear so many people crying, you know. We dont have a lot of the Association Hasnt communicated to us. The city of Surfside Hasnt communicated to us. Did the building tell you did you know there were problems with the building . People knew about the report. We thought there were things being done about it. I dont know if you had a chance to just look at the building, a closer look. Youre going to see theres damages. You dont think a building is going to collapse, especially when you live in a city like this. Its a small city. Its a small town. You think everything is being done to keep everyone safe. And whats shocking to us at this point right now is we are having to find out were finding Help Mouth to mouth. The City Hasnt made us a Phone Call to say, hey, guys, fema is helping you guys this way. The Red Cross is helping you guys that way. We created a group, a message group. And as we go finding things, we just communicate to Each Other. Cnn got hold of a letter this morning sent by the Condo Board President in april saying that the damage to the building, that they had known about a few years, was getting worse. Yes. And you really need to do this 15 Million assessment and repairs. Did you get that letter . Yes, Yes. And what did you think when you got that letter . Esthetically, you look at the building and you look at the north tower. They need money to fix a lot of things. There were leaks in the garage. There were cracks on the balconies. Alleging trumps attempt to enlist the Justice Department to help overturn the election results, using one much his closest cabinet allies, then Attorney General william barr. This is total fraud. How the Fbi And Department of justice, i dont know, maybe theyre involved. But how people are allowed to get away from this with this stuff is unbelievable. Barr often repeated some of trumps claims about election integrity. When you do Allmailin Voting ballots, youre asking for fraud. I do think it increases the opportunity for fraud. But by december 1st, barr publicly admitted there was no evidence of widespread fraud. The former Attorney General describing the fallout with trump to abc News Journalist Jonathan Karl in his new Book Betrayal an admission that resulted in a heated Meeting Barr discussed there was no election fraud. One person telling carl, trump had the eYes and mannerisms of a mad man. Trump asking barr, did you say that . Barr responded Yes to which trump responded back, why the f could you do this to me . Why did you say it . Barr replied, because its true. The former president switched to the third person, you hate trump. You must hate trump. Plus in the book, the claims were all Bull Shut and called the legal team a clown show. Trumps efforts to overturn the election reached a dangerous boiling point. When an angry mob of his supporters stormed the capitol on january 6. Controversial journalist Michael Wolff described what was happening inside the White House in his book landslide, the final days of the trump presidency. Despite senior Advisers Nothing Pence would not go along with the statement now Joe Biden had won, those advisers were too afraid to tell trump the truth. He dove deeper into Conspiracy Theories into the election. Thanks to guidance from his longtime Adviser Rudy giuliani who led failed efforts to overturn trumps loss. His reluctance to ask the writers to stand down, even when his Daughter Adviser Ivanka trump called it an optics issue. And last summer racial justice protests happening in cities across the nation, trump reportedly had a Shouting Match with the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, general Mark Milley over wanting to use Military Force to end the demonstrations. Wall Street Journal reporter Michael Bender describing the heated exchange in his upcoming book frankly, we did win this election. According to bender, milley privately pushed back against trumps efforts, telling trump, he was an adviser and not in kmond. Command. This kautzed the former president to lash out during a Situation Room Meeting with other officials. Trump shouted at milley, i said youre an fing in charge. Well, im not in Charge Milley yelled back before saying to others in the room, God Dam it, theres lawyers in the room. Will someone inform him of my legal responsibilities . He replied, hes right, mr. President. The general is right. We are also getting fresh insight into the Trump Administration chaotic response to the pandemic in a new book out today with the former president fretting about his reelection as He Berates Alex Azar in midmarch. Testing is killing me, trump explained. Im going to lose the election because of testing. What idiot did testing . Jared . It was a missed opportunity. In other headlines weve been talking about the last couple of days, it was floated to bring infected americans, to get them send out of the country, the resistance to wearing masks because they looked like diapers on your face. The president , former president and his efforts to bypass the fda when it came to unproven drugs. Heres whats in your book. Trump had another order for azar. The Fire Brand said hydroxychloroquine worked as a cure against coronavirus. Trump told azar, he had taken hydroxychloroquine and while traveling in africa and had not become ill. He said they work so just approve them. He wanted Alex Azar to go around the fda. Yasmin, how did that turn out . What was the rest of the conversation . What happened was Secretary Azar went to his General Counsel at the Health And Human Services to see if he did have the legal authority to overrule the fda. One thing thats important is hhs is actually the Parent Agency of Fda And Cdc and a number of other health agencies. Alex azar was the Fda Commissioners boss. So there was a meeting later that day where the president was talking about this with a number of advisers including Anthony Fauci, the former Fda Commissioner scott gottlieb, the current Commissioner Steve Hawn and a number of others, he wanted the drug approved that day, march 18. Secretary azar came into that meeting saying he checked with his General Counsel. He did have the authority to overrule the fda, and he could approve the drugs that day. The other advisers in the room talked the president out of it, so it didnt end up moving forward. But as we saw play out, the president did remain fixated on Hydroxychloroquine And Remdesivir was authorized for Emergency Use after they gathered enough data from the clinical trials. We heard in bits and pieces. We learned how serious the threats were to health officials. You opened with a threat specifically to dr. Fauci. Yeah, i mean, it was amazing. I think yasmin and i both got chills when we heard the story that in august of 2020, Anthony Fauci received a white envelope to his house. He was getting A Thousand letters a day to his office. A handful of letters were sent to his house. When he brought that envelope into his office at the n. I. H. , he opened it with a metal opener, a bunch of white powder exploded in his face. He had to be stripped down naked and they feared It Wasser Ricin or anthrax. A similar envelope was sent to dr. Redfield and dr. Birx was receiving a ton of Death Threats to her home. There was a lot of public animosity pushed by the president towards these doctors, but i think a lot of americans dont know the abuse that they faced from the public and how much this really hit them hard. They thought they were doing their job in many cases. Yes, they made mistakes. But they were under so much pressure. A lot of it continues to this day quite frankly. They are still getting attacked all the time. Which is awful on so many levels. At one point, as i understand it, Deborah Birx Hawn and redfield discussed resigning as a group. They made that clear to the Vice President s office. They did. There was this Doctors Group of dr. Birx, dr. Hawn, dr. Redfield and dr. Fauci. Dr. Fauci is a career civil servant so he couldnt be fired by the president , but the other three could. In the spring when they were enduring abuse from the administratiOn And the public, they all thought about quitting at various points. They thought they maybe couldnt take it any more. Deborah birx at one point felt sick going into the west wing every day. She felt people were conspiring behind her back and people were leaking she would actually get sick because there was constantly cases of covid in the White House. They decided that they would have this pact together where if one of them got fired, because they had all been sort of threatened implicitly or explicitly at various points. The other two would resign in protest. So they were effectively chaining themselves to Each Other. They made that clear to the then chief of Staff Mark meadows and the president s chief of Staff Marc short to try to make it clear, they knew any single one of them might be disposable, but it would be catastrophic for the administration to lose three of the top medical advisers just a few months before the election. Theres also how focused i dont think its a surprise but puts it in context, focused the President And Administration was they saw it as a public Relations Crisis as opposed to a public Health Crisis and the president becoming frustrated at one point with dr. Birx and dr. Fauci saying, hes so tired of the negativity. Right, yeah, that was another scene that was we thought was crazy when we heard. It was in july, late july, and the president summoned them up, birx, fauci and others into the Oval Office for a meeting. He exploded at them and told dr. Birx every time she opens her mouth he gets depressed. He spends half his day responding to things that tony fauci says and hes the president of the united states. This reinforces to us last year was crazy. We reported on it every day. There were twists and turns, it was a scary year. After the election people really started to confide in us things were much worse than they seemed. Things were so much more dangerous. There was this eat or be eaten attitude inside the White House that really pushed so many people to the brink. And i think that those stories really needed to be told. Thats what yasmin and i worked so hard on. Before you go, speaking of what happened after the electiOn And how people were talking about things, there was also a moment with dr. Birx after the election, yasmin. And shes very clear that she wants Mike Pence and Donald Trump to speak out because in her words, those people only listen to you. What was that conversation about, yasmin . This was six days after the election. It had just been called for President Biden. It was clear President Trump had lost, although he wouldnt accept it. And pfizer had just reported its results for the vaccine, showing it was 95 effective. So tensions were running really high. There were a number of advisers who felt that pfizer had withheld the results intentionally. And dr. Birx at this point felt there was nothing to lose, that the election was over, they had lost, she knew this deadly wave was coming, the deadliest wave, it was starting to approach 3, 4,000 a day. She begged the Vice President to tell people to wear masks. At that point the president and Vice President hadnt been sending that message. She said those people only listen to you. She was making very clear that because of their response, the country had really cleaved into two. There were these people, those people, and she wanted it to come from the president and the Vice President because she knew half the country just did not listen to what her and dr. Fauci had to say. That went ignored. There wasnt a strong message to wear masks. The Vice President did call for it a few days later. It didnt come from the president. And when the Vice President was initially kind of dismissive of her, she told him, no, you cant ignore me this time. And she really pressed him. Youre both Flight Attendants, but you first met, what, in college when you were both baton twirlers. Just tell me about what kind of Friend Elaine has been to you. First of all, thanks for having me. Elaine, in one word, is irreplaceable. We had known Each Other before college. We were twirlers. She went to u of f, i went to texas to twirl. And we were judges and i twirled and she twirled in florida. We both became Flight Attendants and reconnected at u. S. Airways, and weve been friends for over 20 years. When you saw the news six days ago, that this building had collapsed, what went through your head . Well, first of all, i was in the air, i believe, flying to portland, oregon, because im currently a Flight Attendant. Ive been a Flight Attendant for 33 years. And my mother called me she lives in florida and said, did you see that a condo had collapsed in surfside, florida . And she said, isnt that where elaine lives . And i said, yeah, it is. So i started connecting the dots. And when i saw the new building next to theirs, the scenario became clearer. I know her address. I know she lives on the 12th floor. And i realized on my lay over there in portland, that was elaines condo. That must have been really hard. Yeah, it is hard. Its hard to stay composed. Everyones concerned, not just for my friend, but for everyone. Their safety, the glimmer of hope that just maybe somebody survived. You had visited here. I know as the days pass, it gets harder. Youve been here. Several times. You visited this tower behind me. What did you know about the condition of the building . What did you notice about the condition of the building when you were here, and what, if anything, did elaine say to you about the building . Well, like most people have said, the first thing that you notice is theres a lot of dampness, especially in the garage. And there was a lot of, like, superficial plaster falling. And i did a Girls Trip in march, and my friends, we all noticed that its a glorious place. I mean, being On The Beach is wonderful. But we also noticed that the building was older and there were a lot of places in the garage, on the ceilings of the balcony, and other places around the building that were very, very evident that there are pieces missing. And i know elaine had made mention of that because as a Flight Attendant, we always tell the cockpit if we see, hear or smell anything. Shes very diligent about reporting things, and Thats Part of our training. I know that she had gone downstairs to tell people. I dont know if it was documented, but she had said that being on the Top Floor, how loud it was, she felt like the roof was going to cave in. She felt there was Water Seeping through the walls like around the elevator. And she had relayed those concerns to me, but we just thought, you know, its paradise down there and, you know, it was maybe just a small thing. It was like a facial thing, you know. Right. And this is one of the things i know so many people here are reviewing in their own minds, what they saw, what they said, what they noticed. Shelley engel, i thank you so much for being with us. But the laws are explicitly contradictory and at some point theyre going to need to be harmonized. The question is will the courts force them to do it . And i think thats what thomas was suggesting. Or the smarter thing, the more rational thing would be for congress to do it, but congress doesnt appear to be in any hurry to do it. Theyre not working as well together these days. Well leave that one alone. Moving on to Topic Number two, Chris Christie is the latest onetime Donald Trump supporter who has now got a Publishing Deal and a new book coming out and saying there was a lot of bad lying that happened here some of which Christy P pushed and he is now going to save the republican party. This is the quest that the republican party is on now, how to define itself in the posttrump era. The question is how far can you get away from Donald Trump and still appeal to a party that loves him. The candidates are defining themselves as like 100 pro trump, 80 pro trump. It seems like, you know, christie is trying to move away from 100 , but you can be sure the democrats are going to remind everyone that Chris Christie was involved in debate preparation. The poor guy got covid because he was indulging in the same craziness of not wearing masks in public events that the president was displaying. So, you know, parties out of power always try to define themselves in new ways, and well see how christie does with his book. Well see if this has anything to do, too, with his own bid perhaps 2024. Lastly, so, a Federal Court dismissed a case that was brought by the ftc against facebook. This is a really big deal. Its a really big deal. The most important way you can tell its a big deal is facebooks stock which is high to start with, went up 5 after the case was dismissed. The question is, under Antitrust Law, can you limit the power, the scope, the size of facebook and all the other big tech companies, amazon, microsoft, apple . And this court said no. Its only a federal district court. Its the first court to address this. But ever since the 1980s when Ronald Regan was president , Antitrust Law has gotten weaker and weaker, and the question now is, you know, under current law is there anything that the administration can do. And President Biden and his appointees to the ftc, to the Justice Department have suggested they want to be more aggressive. Or under Congressman David Si sicilini in the house of representatives, can they change the laws to make it more to make it easier to break up these companies. The short answer is none of that has happened yet, so facebook and all these other companies are looking good for the world domination, which they continue to do. Theyre well on their way already. And you had a lot of designers like Tom Ford come out and say they wouldnt dress melania. So i think this is kind of a return to some sort of normalcy that were seeing, and its legitimacy for the First Lady to be on the cover of vogue. Its interesting, too, i thought, that on the cover, right, a First Lady for all of us. Thats clear the message that they are also hoping to send. Thats right. And inside, you know, the piece talks about dr. Biden, how fun loving she is, and it also talks about some of the struggles that the bidens have had, you know, trying to find time to spend with Each Other. And, you know, she famously would go on the Observatory Lawn when the bidens would have these parties for the press, and she would bring a Water Gun out and spritz her husband. She, i think in the story, theyre trying to drive the point home, as you say, that shes really like, up know, your mom or your friend, shes easy to talk to, and much more accessible than Melania Trump ever was. As you saw there for the people that do believe, have bought into the idea Frankly Trump has been pushing he could be reinstated this summer, its very, very real for them. And i will say, something that was quite chilling, particularly hearing that man when he talked i said to him, if this doesnt happen, what happens . He said, Civil War, thats almost precisely what i heard on january 4th, two days before the insurrection. We were in georgia at that Trump Rally on the eve of the senate runoffs there. And everybody was so pumped up for january 6th. Pete, i asked the man, what happens if biden is inaugurated . The guy used similar words like that. He said there would be a Civil War. So its difficult to figure out if this is hyperbole or rhetoric, or people really mean it, but clearly as we saw on january 6, some of these people mean it. And the other thing i think thats difficult to figure out, something that Law Enforcement is trying to tackle, just how wide spread the network of people taking this seriously and may see that as a call to do something violent. Precisely. There was a theory the inauguration would happen, trump would come back march 4. The thing thats different about arizona, with neither of those instances, trump didnt really engage. Weve heard a lot, but i will say one thing i think points to the power of the Social Media and the sort of the right Wing Eco System of media is that, you know, oftentimes before i go to these rallies, all It Takes is a quick scroll through facebook to see what is the trending frankly misinformation or talking points from the right Wing Space that day.
