A 2018 report by a structural Water Proofing around the Pool H Area and abundant cracking in concrete columns in the buildings garage. A Surf Side Building said the building was in very good shape. Also the Miami Herald report a Condo Resident called her husband moments before the collapse and said the building was shaking and saw a Sink Hole where the pool used to be and the line went dead and the woman is missing. It could lead to rare federal investigation. It has to be a Disaster Or Failure vent that resulted in a substantial life of loss. Theres a team of six people from this agency on the ground. That includes structural engineer, scientists, geoengineers and looking at every aspect of this building. They have not launched a formal investigation yet. Thats what this preliminary trip is. We are told they are looking at everything. The ground around the building, the history. That 2018 report will likely be part of that investigation. It is sprawling. Here is where it becomes incredibly significant. If they do launch fall investigation, which we are told by multiple experts they believe they will, this will be only the fifth time they have done so since 9 11. This is a very big deal here for the federal government to get involved. We know this is coming at a time where were hearing from more and more local and state officials who want more federal oversight here. They want the federal government to be involved. They are working around the clock to try to find any sign of life in that debris. That sign of getting good news is getting a little more and more grim. Right now we can tell you that soch some of the Family Members are at the site of the collapse. Its something officials decided to do yesterday and continued with today. Its provided some comfort with Family Member. Some of whom are realizing they may never receive the good news they have been hoping for and one of those Family Members her more and grandmother are among the unaccountsed. He wanted to share this message. As the days take on, its harder to hold onto any little hope that we do have that well be able to see them again alive. Its been especially difficult this weekend because they were always come over on the weekend. We would always be together. My son is still asking when we can call them. When are they coming over . When are we going to see them again . We cant tell him yet that hes not going to be able to see them again. Were sitting by anxiously awaiting any news to be able to move onto the next steps. Thats the only hope we have now. Regarding them, the only hope that is starting to increase is there are investigations going on. People are starting to get interested in this story. The owners had complained many times about the board about the fin finances, about the condition of the building and for the board to have allowed the building to get into this condition of disrepair is unconsciousable. We are hopeful that this doesnt go away and that the people that allowed this to happen are held responsible. Its adding an undue and unwelcome amount of stress for those looking for signs of life on day five. I can only imagine. Can you tell us whats happening with the search . Right now just like from the very beginning of things, we have been actively searching for signs of where people might be and any survivors. Were trying to do things as safe as possible so we dont get hurt. Our dogs dont get hurt and so that if there is any survivors, so that they dont get further hurt. Its very tricky situation similar to a complex game of almost pick up sticks with multiple other ahazards like weather and things going on. I can only imagine how pain staking it is going through every square inch. Do you as a Doctor Hold out hope that people have survived this . For situations like this as the Traine Ed ems physician and urban Search And Rescue physician, im cautiously optimistic. Part of our job is to bring hope to the community. With all the science that ive studied and everything going on, i know time is ticking and all the different variables that go into the possibilities of somebody surviving change and are extremely d ly die yndynami. Im hopeful and i hope well get some more people but like i said, im cautiously optimistic as time goes on. This is as a trained rescuers and also a member of the community. I understand. You have to hold out hope as youre sifting through the rubble but is there some sort of Survivability Window that youre working with that the search teams are up against . Yeah. Its a really hard way to calculate. Sometimes depending on the type of situation were talking about hours but we have been in situations where its been days until we had survivors come out. Theres just, honestly, so many variables. Theres more than 50 things. Theres weather. Were they sleeping, in bed, where they were in the building. Theres so much that goes into it. Were consistently recalculating all of that while continuing to do the job were trying to be here today. Family members are frustrated and are tortured by the waiting. What do you say to those who think that its not going fast enough . I Ska Ay that you have to ha some trust. Im proud in any training. I have trust many any team. Its not just us here trying to help. I have people that i have missing still in this. Other firefighters and rescuers also have people in this. We have faith in it. We had the experience of having a lot of searches like this. This is unfortunately what we do. We want dont want it to happen to people for when it does for days like these, were glad we have the training so we can be there to help people. Really its i unction i really want people to understand that its not like the movies where we quick go and do things. We have to do things right and try based on evidence based Med S were in it with you. Understood. Youre a local doctor. Who do you have that youre looking for . Who of your friends or Loved Ones . Sd out of respect, i dont want to specifically give the names but i do have three people. Combination of friends when i was in residency and people that ive worked with over the years since i moved down here to South Florida. Thats beyond all the second, Third Person connections. Those are direct connections. To be honest, ive been concentrating on my team, my dogs and the everybody around in the community. I havent looked into the other specifics of who, what connections i have that i know theres more of. I do know for a fact there are three people that i knew personally directly that are unaccounted for. I know what you have been finding are some household items. Some personal belongings. Can you share with us the kind of things that youre finding . I got here very early on in the morning when things first happened and the first thing that i found was a wedding photo. You could tell. It was from a long time ago. Is it a survivor, someone killed in this incident. Is it someone that passed a long time ago and these are memories, i dont know. While were doing our mission and going through things carefully, we have been setting certain things aside. Certain toys and pictures. Things that are safe for us to move and some of which we have moved over to shrine that was set up, a Memorial Spot where some toys. Some of the things in particular that really hit home for me are certain toys and stuffed animals. Trucks that were similar to what my grandfather used to get me growing up and things like that. Its very interesting glimpse into the lives of the people that are here or were here. As we continue with things, hope a hopefully we get more survivors and maybe these are things that will bring Closure And Help celebrate the lives of people as opposed to mourning the deaths. He lives in Puerto Rico and he only came in because another one of our childhood friends passed away from covid. He was in town in miami to attend georges funeral. George, who was only days away from getting vaccinated and didnt make it. He was in town for a funeral and then he was staying with his mother and older brother at their Childhood Condo and they are all missing right now. The double tragedy of all of this. We heard from other people who were also connected to that funeral who came into town for that funeral and now obviously are still missing. Were you saying that you say jay was your childhood friend. I know you told our producers you were like brothers to each other. Well, i would say that when we were growing up, this was a guy who always had an extraordinary smile. We spoke with the fbi and the State Department and we ended up working extensively with the u. S. Embassy in moscow and the russian police and the university where she attended. The university and the police mounted a huge Search Effort to try to find her In The Woods where her Cell Phone last pinged. I dont think that we thought it could get any worse until we found out that she was no longer with us. They found her remains. Mary, is it your belief she got into a car with a stranger thinking it was her uber . I really dont know. The russian police have told us that they are going to debrief us in person. Im hesitant to say, to speculate in case it gets in the way of their investigation. I hope thats okay. Of course. Becky, as a mom, all of us can only imagine how chilling a Text Message that is. We wont have that until the investigation is complete. I feel like every one on the team from the police, the investigators, the host family, every one is working for kathryns best interest and make sure that the murder is convicted. We dont want to rush their investigation. I understand. What have they told you about this suspect, becky . We dont know yet. We have seen a lot on the media. They say they will tell us everything when we come. That they are interested in making sure that this isnt swept under the rug. I was just talking to your daughter about how tough kathryn is. The majority of those people are fully vaccinated. Where we are falling short and having a big challenge is with young adults, people who are 30 to 49 years old. And i think there could be a few reasons for that. What we dont want to see is what other parts of the country are seeing, particularly arkansas, oklahoma, missouri. They are actually seeing hospitalizations in that Age Group probably largely due to the Delta Variant. So, we have a window to get these folks vaccinated, and we really want to try to ramp that up. But its challenging. Lets take a look at the areas that have the highest Vaccination Rates and the lowest. So the top five states, vermont, 65 fully vaccinated. Massachusetts, 61 . The areas with the least vaccination, mississippi, alabama, virgin islands, arkansas, and wyoming. It must just be so frustrating for you as a doctor to know that at this point the hospitalizations that you just spoke of and the deaths dont have to happen. They dont have to happen anymore. I mean, a year ago they did. But now its our choice. Absolutely. And i think what people, particularly younger people dont appreciate, is that the reason we are in this very good moment is because weve had a successful vaccine rollout. We are only here, the virus is not getting weaker. The virus, if anything, is continuing to evolve. We are in this space because many people have going to head and gotten vaccinated. So really important for people to remember that. The other thing ill mention is that if you look at people who are now dying of covid or hospitalized, the vast majority of them are occurring in unvaccinated people. So, i think if that doesnt really get you motivated to get out there and get vaccinated, its hard to say what else will. We do expect that the fda is going to approve those vaccines hopefully soon, because, remember, were still under that eua, the emergency use authorization. And im really hopeful that thats going to give people the measure of security they need to move forward with this. I think that will help. Just from the vaccine hesitant people that ive spoken to, i think that that will sway some people. But, on that note, senator Ron Johnson of wisconsin is holding an event this afternoon with families who will share their experiences regarding adverse reactions to the covid19 vaccine. Whats so interesting about this, doctor, is that, yes, there can be adverse reactions. We know that. Weve reported on it, weve talked about it. But thats not the news. The bigger news, i mean, the more earthshattering news is that 180 Million americans are at least partially vaccinated, and, thereby, those lives have been saved. I mean, the idea that in such a short time weve been able to save 180 Million americans, thats the news. And so for him to do this kind of anomaly and hold a Press Conference about that, how do you counter that message that hes trying to get out . First of all, i think you need to recognize that im sure the families are hurting from whatever they experience. And i think its important to acknowledge that. And you said just now that adverse events do occur. So we need to recognize that. But we need to put them in perspective. They are a Minute Proportion of what the benefit of these vaccines are, as youve said.
