A major heat wave in store for the Pacific Northwest and growing Fire Concerns for the droughtstricken southwest. Lets get to meteorologist chad myers. Chad . John, a remarkable heat wave about to occur in the northwest. Also, British Columbia as well. Hundreds of record highs will be broken without a doubt. To the east there will be some severe weather. But this remarkable heat wave across the west is going to happen thursday, friday, saturday, and into sunday and then at the same time were going to get almost 10 inches of rain in parts of missouri. One side across the country to the other. Seattle has only been over 100 degrees three times in history. The forecast is for three times again by monday. New day continues right now. Im Brianna Keilar alongside john berman on this new day. Combatting crime, President Biden taking action to address a surge in big city violence. Democrats strategizing their next move after Senate Republicans knocked down, even debating, an election reform bill. And cdc advisers are meeting to discuss a vaccine booster shot. You want a third one . However many it takes. Right . Theyre doing this because this Delta Variant is spreading fast. A former sportswriter says she was raped by a Major League Baseball player and this morning is speaking out about her startling revelation. Welcome to our viewers here in the United States and around the world. Its wednesday, june 23rd. Were just about halfway there, arent we . Halfway to what . Friday. The best day of the week. Well past halfway to july. Were almost there, folks. In just a few hours President Biden is going to unveil his administrations Crime Prevention strategy. This plan of his is expected to focus on curbing gun violence in the face of a Violent Crime wave that is raging across the country and one that has only escalated during the pandemic. There have been 296 mass shootings, 16 mass murders, 9,487 deaths from guns alone. Just two examples in the past week. A gunman opened fire in the street on a man. Two children barely escaped the barrage of gunfire. Just horrible to see that. And a father of twins was mugged and murdered while sitting in his car. His fiancee will join us in just a moment. First, i want to go to jeff and what well hear and why from the white house. Reporter good morning. President biden will lay out a series of steps to address this growing crime rate. The reason why theyre doing it, they are hearing from local officials across the country who are sounding alarm about the rising rate of homicides and other Violent Crimes. The white house does not want to be caught flatfooted on this. The president is going to be meeting with a series of mayors, republican and democrat, a police chief and the attorney general, to lay out a series of anticrime initiatives focusing on guns, specifically on the rising level of homicides across the country. But hes also going to unveil a policy of Zero Tolerance for rogue gun dealers, going after some of the guns that are on the street. Of course the president making clear that the rise of the Violent Crime coming after the pandemic is something that is simply unacceptable, but hes going to be signing a series of executive actions as well as urging congress to do more on guns. But we know that is something that simply has not happened over the last several years or so. This rise in crime rate certainly a concern to the white house. Hes going to be calling on congress to confirm the director of the atf and of course something that has not happened as well as a series of other things but specifically the amount of money used for the american recovery plan, the big covid relief plan. Hes going to be calling for cities to use some of this funding for Community Policing efforts. So these are just a series of some of the efforts hes calling on. The most important thing the white house is doing is trying to draw attention to this. Hell be talking with local leaders for a couple hours this afternoon and then delivering a speech later. Trying to draw focus on this. This is no stranger to this issue. Joe biden led the crime bill in 1994, very controversial at the time, now trying to get ahead of this as this rising crime rate is impacting the country. Jeff zeleny, thank you for that reporting. Police release this had video showing a robbery in New York City which took the life of milton grant. Early monday morning as grant sat in his car speaking to a friend, three suspects walked up to his black bmw, pulled out guns and tried to rob the two men. When grant tried to drive away, he was shot in the head, crashing his car nearby. Surveillance video shows one suspect hop into the crashed car to steal his watch, ring and chain. Police are still looking for the suspects who remain atlarge and grants family is demanding answers. I am joined now by the fiancee of milton grant, the mother of twin boys. Thank you for being with us. We are so sorry for your loss. So sorry that you are going through this this morning. Thank you. Tell us about milton. My fiancee was a great father. He was a family man. He put his kids first and his family first. And now i have to tell my little ones that their father is not returning home anytime soon. They dont know yet . Its unfortunate, its definitely unfortunate. You had said you never thought this could happen to your family. I never thought that my husband would be taken from me in this way. We talked about having forever together, about raising our kids. We just put them in sports, and so now im thinking how am i supposed to take them to practice without their dad accompanying me. How am i going to do Family Vacations without him . And its all for his jewelry, a robbery. How do you explain that . My husband liked nice things. He worked hard for his jewelry, for his shoes, for his clothes, for his cars, and for someone to just murder him, senselessly murder him for his belongings instead of working hard for getting his own is just a slap in the face. To take a life just for his jewelry is just insane. Why shouldnt he like nice things, right . You see whats happening yes. In New York City. Again, you never believed this could happen to your family, never happen to milton, yet you know that right now were seeing this rise in crime in cities across the country. Why do you think its happening . I think many people are struggling due to covid, due to unemployment rates, even though we have jobs available, people dont want to work. They would rather collect unemployment, and i feel the government needs to put a stop to people making claims that have the ability to work. Go out and work for your money. Go out and work to buy your own things. Dont steal and dont kill just to get those things. Work for them just like my husband did. What have you heard from police so far in the investigation . Not a thing. They have not contacted me since the death, and they didnt contact me about the death. His fatherinlaw was on the scene and they took his phone to give me their number, detective walters. Ive contacted them yesterday about three or four times, no answer. I just want his phones back. I want his belongings. I want to get arrangements settled for me and his family to put him in the ground. Do you think the city at this point is doing enough to stop crime like this . No. Not at all. What more should they do . I cant say what needs i have no idea what needs to be done, but something has to be done. We have to protect our husbands and our brothers and our children. Its just too much happening. Its not even safe to go outside your house anymore. Look, im the father of twins. Its devastating. I cant imagine what youre going through right now and the discussion youre going to have to have with your children. Tell us about milton. Tell us about what kind of man he was. Tell us about his life. Milton was very confident. He always would tell you he was the grittest cook. Anything that you wanted to eat, i could make it. Im the best. He always was around his kids. I dont even know how im going to go on. He picked them up from school. He was just a very handson father and a very handson son. He and his fathers relationship, theyre thick as thieves, and thats how i wanted my kids to be with him and now theyve been robbed of that opportunity. His legacy will live on i will keep his memory alive for them. You will. Keep his memory alive. Tell your children about him. Tell them about the cooking, the food, but i know its not enough. I know its not enough. Nixia jordan, again, so sorry for your loss. We do appreciate you being with us. Please let us know if theres anything we can do. Thank you, john. Just really drives home how senseless all of this is. And we see the numbers, and that is the fallout from one person being taken in this scourge we are seeing. As so often with tragedy when we see rising numbers, the most important number is one is its someone you know, when its your fiancee, the father of your twins who doesnt come home one morning. She says, i think what a lot of people feel, which is something has to be done. I cant tell you what has to be done. I know, though, this cant keep happening. There just shouldnt be more families like milton grants. Its senseless. We want to turn now to congress where republicans have essentially sunk democrats efforts to defend Voting Rights now under assault across the country. Vice president Kamala Harris provided over this 50 50 vote and it results that means not only will the for the people act not pass, it wont even get a debate. So this isnt even going to be debated on the senate floor. What is next then . Turns out Senate Democrats have other options as john avlon explains in our reality check. Reporter Mitch Mcconnell wants you to know everything is just fine with our democracy. Theres nothing broken around the country. The system upheld very well during tense stress in the latter part of the previous congress. Reporter i mean, despite the big lie and the insurrection and the continued baseless belief by majorities of republicans that the election was illegitimate, everything is cool, the system worked. I mean, thats why republican State Legislatures keep trying to pass laws making it harder to vote, right . That was just moments after mcconnell had all republicans kill the for the people act, a wideranging bill to reform much of our democracy to protect veiting rights, restricting Big Money In Politics and establishing new ethics rules for officials. Theres plenty to debate in that bill even with unanimous democratic support, but republicans shut down any debate via the filibuster. After all, when senator mike lee called it a bill as if Written In Hell by the devil himself, well, reason had left the building a long time ago. So what can democrats do next . Well, theres the john lewis Voting Rights act named after the late congressman and civil rights leader that focuses on restoring the 1965 Voting Rights act. This would override the Red State Voter Restrictions and ensure a more level Playing Field and even has more bipartisan support in the form of its sponsor lisa murkowski. So maybe this would get a fair hearing, right . Well, not according to Mitch Mcconnell. He called the bill unnecessary. Which brings us to plan c, the joe manchin compromise proposal which would make it automatic, election day a holiday, require at least 15 days of early voting, prohibit jegerrymanderi and require voter i. D. S. A major concession to republicans so clearly bipartisan support, right . Even stacy abrams endorsed the compromise but, no. Senate Republican Leaders quickly said they with oppose it. Democrats should bring it up for a vote anyway, make it clear that republicans oppose expanded Voting Rights even when they get some of what they say they want. Its a little bit like republicans asking for and getting specific conditions for a bipartisan john 6 commission and killing it anyway. Just more evidence that bipartisanship has become a partisan virtue in congress. Republicans wont meet democrats halfway. Its delay on the road to denial every time. So heres the deal. Do democrats accept the refusal to negotiate in good faith before the next election, or do they go it alone . Which brings us back to filibuster reform. Notice i said reform as in bend it dont end it. Maybe after republicans show they wont accept compromise Senators Manchin will consider reform. Manchin said to express openness like returning to the ole talking filibuster. Mcconnell will howl but it is a matter of fact the filibuster has been abused in recent years. Its also a matter of fact the filibusters lowest moments came from southern conservatives blocking Voting Rights in the past. Mitch mcconnell saying this, the filibuster has no racial history at all. Well, dr. Martin luther king would like a word with him. We have a congress with a senate that has a minority of misguided senators who will use the filibuster to keep the majority of people from even voting. They wont let the majority of senators vote, and certainly they wouldnt want the majority people to vote because they know they do not represent the majority of the american people. Reporter yes, times have changed. But some issues remain the same. And thats your reality check. John avlon, thank you for that. Theres a key question for cdc experts as the Delta Variant continues to spread. So will a booster shot be required . Are we going to need more to prevent a resurgence . Cases . Plus, dozens of medical workers who refuse to get vaccinated get word on whether they get to keep their jobs. And Billie Eilish apologizing for behavior from years ago. That would mark nearly two years that chinas borders have been essentially sealed off according to tthe wall street journal which cites people familiar with the matter. In the uk theres a big study under way to see whether or not the procedure is actually efficient in protecting against coronavirus. Having said that, though, the results are yet in. The cdc in the United States advises against the procedure. Dr. Anthony fauci warning the Delta Variant poses the greatest threat to progress against covid19 here in the u. S. Infections caused by the variant are doubling every two weeks. Joining us now krf nn chief medical correspondent dr. Sanjay gupta. At this rate half of all infections could be Delta Variant infections. Whats the impact there . Reporter yeah, i think this will clearly become the more dominant strain in the United States and, frankly, around the world. Weve been tracking this for some time. You can see sort of the growth over a period of time. So right now its sort of doubling every couple of weeks. I think thats why people are saying by midjuly, end of july, it will become over 50 certainly. I think theres a couple of important things to the seriousness of this. This is a more transmissible virus. Thats why it becomes more dominant. It can outrun the other viruses. Its 60 more transmissible than the uk variant, alpha, and the strain before that. You get the idea where this goes. The big question a lot of people will ask how well does the vaccine protect me . And theres more data coming in on that as well. The answer is good news there even when they pooled the vaccine data between astrazeneca and pfizer, for example, you s still get good protection against illness, against becoming severely ill. The far right, if you only get one shot, that effectiveness drops way off. You remember there were discussions should we just give one shot to people . Now we know why that wouldnt have been a good idea. The effectiveness drops to half of what it was. I want to show something else, florida. We pulled this data out of some of the florida counties. You can start to stratify areas where you have lots of people vaccinated and where you dont have as many people vaccinated. We talked about the Delta Variant spreading. We know that. I gave you some global numbers. We can get more precise. In areas where theres lots of unvaccinated people, the Delta Variant is growing faster. Thats the red line over there. Where you have fewer unvaccinated people, its not that the virus cant spread among them but its less likely to spread. If you live among a lot of unvaccinated people, thats the worst possible situation. It kind of makes sense but you see it for yourself. We know this is what viruses do. They want to be more transmissible and thats part of the miracle of the timing of the vaccine when it came out. You look at those numbers just how good it is at even combatting the Delta Variant. But i wonder over time weve discussed this, do you need another booster . Do you need a third shot . Reporter its really interesting, brianna. You think as the virus changes, it sort of changes out transmissibility for lethality. As it becomes more contagious maybe its less lethal. Its not clear yet with delta. Theres younger people and sicker people in hospitals all over the world as a result of delta. So we have to keep an eye on it. It raises the question about boosters. Weve heard what the companies have had to say. But now we wanted to hear from the experts directly. On december 14th, a nurse in new york became the First American vaccinated for covid19 outside of a clinical trial. That was six months ago. Now the discussion is all about boosters. Will we need them . And, if so, when . There will be a need for booster somewhere between 8 and 12 months. Theres no set rule now that says in six months or in a year were going to require a booster. Its frustrating because people want to know how long immunity lasts but its going to take time. Reporter an Infectious Disease expert preparing for pandemics has served on government panels responding to Public Health emergencies not unlike the one weve been in the last year and a half. What are you looking for early clues we would need Booster Shots . I want to know whats happening to the patients clinically . Are they getting breakthrough infections, and are they severe enough to land them in the hospital . Reporter with some diseases like yellow fever, most people get Lifetime Protection from a vaccine. But for others, like influenza, we roll up our sleeves every year. Even among coronaviruses it ranges. The first sars in 2003, those first individuals inforgeted did develop longstanding. They are always causing common colds. Reporter Booster Studies are under way. In some cases boosting with a different covid19 vaccine or one thats been tailored to a specific variant. Should we be worried there will be a particular variant that may start to escape the protection of these vaccines . I think its very hard for a virus to mutate in such a way and to get the permutations to be able to completely evade a vaccine to make it worthless. Reporter at the same time were hearing more and more good news about just how robust immunity to covid19 might be. Six months out, both pfizer and moderna still have more than 90 efficacy against covid19, and even among people who have been infected were still seeing evidence of immunity a year later. And its not just antibodies were talking about. The antibody arm Everybody Knows about and then theres a whole other arm we will find these cells that are reactive to covid19 long after infection. And those may be really instrumental for how we determine when a booster is necessary. Reporter but there may be some who may benefit from a booster sooner than others like immunocompromised people. A recent study found a third shot provided a boost to a small group of participants who had low antibody responses including a third of them who had no detectable antibodies of but for many of us the benefit is less clear cut. An issue that becomes even more complicated when you start to look around the world. If youve got this pandemic raging out of control in many countries where they cant get single doses into people, it really is going to be difficult to justify giving people a third dose. Reporter the good news is the boosters could be created pretty quickly. This technology is pretty remarkable. Its also not clear that we need them right now. What were seeing the vaccines work well, if you can get more and more people vaccinated, the virus will circulate less, fewer mutations, and maybe, maybe, we wont need boosters at all. These vaccines could last, could be protected for a long time. Go out and get your first shot. Lets do that first, get everyone the first and second shot, boosters as needed later on. Dr. Sanjay gupta, thank you very much. Still ahead, one countrys president threaten to go arrest people who refuse to get vaccinated. Bill maher says people need to stop apologizing. Last week, of course, Linmanuel Miranda was criticized for not having more darkskinned latinos in it. Stop the apologizing. Youre the guy who made the Founding Fathers black and hispanic. I dont think you have to apologize to twitter. This is why people hate democrats. At some point people are going to have to stand up to these bullies because thats what it is, its just bullying. I can make you crawl like a dog and enjoy it. Hes a latino making a movie with a latino cast, not good enough. And this issue of cancel culture that has become obviously such a hot topic. Lets discuss with political commentator and a journalist and hosts the podcast run tell this. Thank you for coming on. Good to see you. What do you think about what bill maher is saying that democrats need to stop apologizing . Its rich that he is explaining colorism to the black community. Theres a big difference between what happened with Billie Elilih and Linmanuel Miranda. Theres consequences, accountability culture, and thats what were seeing now. In the case of Billie Eilish, be she apologized. Its smart to do that. There will not be any consequences as there shouldnt be. I dont think any of us would want to be punished for stupid things we did when we were 13 years old. She says theres no excuse. Maybe this is an unpopular but i think a 13yearold can be forgiven for that. A lot of people who have never been held accountable dont like that the culture is shifting and that now people are being held accountable for bad behavior and facing the consequences of it. I think the term cancel culture has been used as a blunt force object to describe all kinds of things, things that i would call basic accountability and human decency. There is nothing wrong with looking inward, wanting to be a sensitive and Inclusive Society and ask if were speaking about these issues in the correct way. But of course on the far right when youre a Hammer Everything looks like a nail and i think theyre using cancel culture to scare you out of having a conversation about accountability. However, i do think if youre someone who looks at the Linmanuel Miranda story, and the only reason you probably know him is because he has amplified the Voices Of Black and Brown America in such wonderful ways, you are con founded by the fact that he is sort of in it right now. Maybe i might look at this story and say i want to know more about why. I want to know why the Afrolatino Community is upset with him. The others might say, the hell with that. Theres nothing i can do and kind of give up on the whole project. I dont think thats great and if the intention of accountability is to educate people, it cant be to scare them into silence. I dont think thats actually moving this conversation along. People decry free speech and say free speech is on the crime, youre not allowed to say anything. Thats not what is happening. People are able to speak their mind. Course. And say what they believe. How is the marketplace going to respond . How is your audience going to respond in in this case of in the heights, what more do you want . People are still giving you a hard time. The neighborhood the heights is about is majority afrodominican, imagine making a movie about greenwich, connecticut, with no white actors. If youre pointing out a Glaring Eraseure of people in the commune that is not a bad thing. That is something that need to be i agree. Hes apologized. I think theres never anything wrong with apologizing and reflecting. I dont think all people are going to do that leg work to get to that place. And it also just feels confusing, i think, to a lot of people. If you look at someone like mel gibson has said the worst things ive ever heard a human say about women, about jews, still making movies. Just won a Bunch Of Awards for the last blockbuster he had. Someone like allison roman, a New York Times cookbook columnist, was basically shelved for saying something critical of chr chrissy teigen. To me i understand because i read about this stuff and i want to know more about this stuff. I think to a lot of people cans confounding, it makes no sense in the world. What bothers me the most about the discussion in general is i think theres a huge Strawman Component to it. Yes. One side is winning by the words we are putting on the screen by saying cancel culture, by using that terminology to define whats happening, you are giving It Everything it wants which is to suggest has mel gibson been canceled . No. Has bill maher been canceled . Thats whats so great about this. If cancel culture was real, bill maher would have been canceled a long time ago. He talked about the 9 11 terrorists less than a week after saying they were not coward. He has compared mentally disabled children to dogs. He has called himself a house n word, not saying n word, but the full word. If cancel culture was real, he would have been canceled. He has a successful show. Hes touring all over the country. He is example number one of how cancel culture is not real. Let me ask about liz cheney has liz cheney been canceled from the Republican Caucus . Yes, right. The very same people who say you cant say anything anymore these days without getting canceled kicked her out of her job. Its wildly inconsistent, wildly selective when People Choose to get upset about it. I think thats a major issue. To look at it, i wonder how you think you should look at it in terms of someones net contributions. Allison roman, for instance, which a lot of people may not be familiar with her, had to leave the New York Times. She was kicked out of the New York Times. She was someone who made cooking during the pandemic more accessible to people. Thats really the pasta, which is amazing, the cookie, the stew. Anyway, she what she said about marie and chrissy and people said what are you thinking . Youre talking about two women of color and not recognizing what youre doing, but at the same time you see these other examples like the net contribution like with mel gibson is what . Egregious. To everyones point, i also conceded everything looks like a nail and completely taking a broad brush to this, to our own detriment. But its hard to make sense of it when you look. I wouldnt say it feels arbitrary but it feels capricious and like you cant you cant navigate it. But i think the differentiator is who is your audience . Women dont take well to a woman attacking other women. So who is your audience and are you smart enough to know and figure that out . Who is mel gibsons audience . Im certainly not. Kevin hart got nixed for old tweets that were homophobic brings up the point, look, why are we supposed to be perfect . I dont hold my wife or kids to the stand around of being perfect and basically said last i checked the only way you grow up is from bleeping up. What do you think . Theres a question about when have people done enough to redeem themselves . Thats a very real question. When is someone worthy of for forgiveness . Michael vick did something terrible, was convicted, paid the cost for that, served his time and came out and did a tremendous amount of work in supporting animal rights. When you speak to people in those communities, no, we feel this was genuine. He is remorseful for what he did. At what point do we as a community say, okay, you have paid your debt to society. We forgive you because nobody is perfect . I dont think anyone is striving for perfection and a standard no one will meet. We will all fail at it. I think, yeah, if youre looking at someone like a wonderful journalist, a great journalist, a woman of color was fired from vogue who passed antiasian tweets she made as a teenager. When does she get a second shot at a big career . Or is the consequence, listen, you said some things you shouldnt have said, and you dont have a right to a highpaying, highprofile job in journalism maybe. I dont have the answer to that. I think thats what people are trying to reconcile with and its unclear. Weve had her on the show multiple times. And so i think thats a very good question. Perhaps thats a bit of an answer as well. I think really none of us would want to be defined by our worst moments. If we can extend mercy, compassion, empathy and grace the same way we would want it ourselves. Read Linmanuel Mirandas explanation, it makes a ton of sense and he learned something from it. We can listen to what people have to say after the fact and learn from it. This was a great discussion. He also said, if you dont want to get the vaccine, go to india or america. I interpret that in a couple of different ways. One, i think it just highlights that Freedom Still does exist in america. I mean, as much as groups of people wanted to cry Mask Mandates and covid restrictions as assault on their individual freedoms, here you have the president of a country saying, if you dont do exactly what we tell you, we are literally going to deprive you of your freedom. But if you still want to go around doing whatever the heck you want without regard for anybody else but yourself, go to america. Theyll let you do it, no consequentials. So, i see that, and also its a reflection of what the rest of the world must see about america. Here we are, a country with ample supply of the vaccine where we have to bribe people to go get it. And part of the problem in the philippines why they have this outbreak is exactly that, shortage of the vaccine. People are waiting eight hours in line. They want it. They cant get it. Here we have it, its available, its easy to get, its free most of the time, and were like, oh, well. We dont want to. Theres a lot of things going on at once here. You have one of the worlds worst strong men saying something thats clear here. Trying to address a problem in his country which is running rampant. Well, you know, its really rich and ironic that he is saying, if youre hesitant to get the vaccine, then get out of the country, because his critics say he is part of the problem. He has not inspired confidence in science and in vaccines in his own country, you know. When he took the vaccine, he insisted on getting sthe chines vaccine which was not approved at the time. There was a controversy over several children died, so that caused people to not want to get vaccinated because they dont trust their government. They dont trust what theyre telling them scientifically. This is another case where you have the words and actions of leaders matter. Whether its here in america, whether its in brazil with bolsonaro, duterte. People look to their leaders to emulate behavior especially in times of crisis. But if youre going to promote antiscience, antiintellectual theories and practice and then when that hits the reality of Something Like a pandemic and its now out of control because of exactly what you did, then what history taught us what strong men do is double down on their strong man tactics. This is an interesting discussion, an interesting microcosm here and around the world. Thank you so much. Thank you. A startling revolution from sports journal kat obrien. In an Opinion Piece kat made this revelation she was raped by a Major League Baseball player. She was 22 at the time, a year out of college and she never reported what happened because she was afraid of the backlash. She writes, it was a trauma that had been living inside me 18 years. With us now to share her story is kat obrien, former reporter and baseball beat writer for the Fort Worth Star telegram and news day. Kat, thank you so much for writing this. I know that so many people have read it. They have connected with it for so many Different Reasons that your voice on this has been so important. Just tell us, walk us through what happened that day. Hi, thank you for having me. You know, i was working on the piece, and sometimes people like to talk a lot, and i am not one of those people so they dont know the source for the story. Not everything is forwarded maybe on background. This player said he wanted to talk privately, so we went to do an interview in his hotel room, and, you know, we sat down on different chairs and started out fine. And then he took things in a direction that i, you know, i said no and stop, but unfortunately, im not anywhere near as strong as a professional athlete. I dont have 60 or 80 pounds, im 115frame pounds. There was no way i could overpower him and, yeah. You protest you talk about this. You protested. And afterwards you questioned yourself. You wondered, why did i wear a skirt . You write about that. And then you say, well, because it was summer. It was hot. Of course you would wear a skirt. But that was one of your instincts was to kind of look inward. And you talk about how you didnt tell a soul, not your best friend, not your sister, not your mom or your editor who is a woman. But then something changed years and years later here in january. Tell us, tell us what changed that made you want to tell this story. So, you know, there had been a lot of reports over the last few months, particularly jared carter who was the exgeneral manager being fired over sending explicit images and texts to a female reporter who ultimately left the industry, left the country, and so i was reading some of those reports. I dont work in sports any more, and in particular i read one by Brittany Jolly of the athletic. She was in a similar situation. It started the same way. She went to a hotel room of a player to do an interview. The difference is hers from the very start, it was obvious that they didnt want to do an interview. She was met with a romantic scene, and so she left, which i would have done the same if i had been met in that way. And i read her story and i was just like, it shocked me. I just suddenly realized what i should have known all along. If it was someone else, i would have known all along it wasnt their fault. They didnt do anything wrong. But i think sometimes we expect of ourselves, i shouldnt have been in the room. I should have somehow been able to get out of there. And i read her story and it just shook me. And i was so upset. In a way it was good because i realized that, but then i couldnt keep it quiet any more. So initially i told a couple people, a few people. Even though im not currently a writer or reporter in the profession, im still a writer at heart. I still tell stories, narrative. And i wanted to tell my story. The other reason i decided to come forward is i kept Hearing Stories about not as severe a things, but the pervasive everyday Sexual Harassment which is all the time. It doesnt seem like its gotten better. And i also felt because im not a reporter any more, because im not in sports any more, i could come forward and be frank and be sincere and say everything i wanted to say without fear of losing my job or my ability to be a reporter because i dont im not dependent on anyone in baseball. Sure. And, kat, i want to read a statement if we can put this up, what was said here in this case. This is from Major League Baseball, because you said not enough is changed. They say, we were deeply saddened to learn what kat endured during her career as a professional baseball writer. We encourage her to share her experience with others. They do go on to say they put in place forums or ways that this behavior can be better reported. I wonder, you know, what you, what you say to that, and also if you can address, as you do in your column, why you decided youre not going to name your alleged rapist. Yeah, so, i mean, i think thats great that they put things in place and maybe more things. I spoke to someone in Major League Baseball yesterday. Im going to talk to other women and see if there are things that can be done. Obviously you cant prevent everything, but there are things that can be done to help. As well as on a team level. In terms of naming, and ive also told people i should have named him at the time. First of all, people come forward at the time. Fewer than 1 of people who are accused of rape are ultimately convicted and go to prison. In this case where i would have been accusing a professional athlete, and i was a 22yearold woman, i think the chance would have been like one in 10,000. And so i dont think i dont regret not coming forward because i would have just i would have lost my career and i would have without any actual good consequence coming of it. Now to come forward at this point when i cant prove it i literally did no
