Good morning to our viewers here in the united states and around the world. Its tuesday, june 22nd. You keep telling me that. I know. I always need a reminder. I appreciate it. A Senate Showdown is about to unfold, and there is so much at stake. Free and fair elections, democracy itself. When the senate Votes Today on advancing the for the people act, it will be a test of unity for democrats. Republicans are certain to kill it. But if all 50 dwemocrats do get behind it, the future of the filibuster is perhaps in play. President biden met with two moderate senators who can block his legislative goals. West virginias Joe Manchin and Arizonas Kyrsten Sinema Support keeping the filibuster in place. If we eliminate the 60 threshold, we will lose much more than we gain. President obama advocates for the patsage of the voting Rights Bill. The violence that occurred in the u. S. Capitol on january 6, just a few months ago, should remind us that we cant take our democracy for granted. Around the World Weve seen once vibrant democracies go in the reverse, locking in power for a small group of powerful autocrats and business interests and blocking out the political pro. Dissidents and protesters and Opposition Parties and the voices of ordinary people. It is happening in other places around the world, and these impulses have crept into the united states. We are not immune from some of these efforts to weaken our democracy. Joining us now is washington, d. C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. Mayor, thanks for being with us. Thank you, brianna. So, i know that you will be testifying today on The Hill, but first i want to talk about this voting Rights Bill that were going to see on The Hill that we are expecting to go down. This will be a procedural vote. It will need 60 votes, and it is expected ultimately not to fail. I wonder its expected to fail. I wonder what you think about President Obama saying what he said in a warning of a reverse in democracy. Well, i think as americans we should all be concerned. We have a duty to protect our democracy. Weve seen that its been threatened and its been under attack for the last four years. I agree with President Obama, and certainly support president Bidens Effort to make sure all the senators for today and in history can be on the record for supporting and defending our democracy. What do you think about, you know, at large what you are seeing across the country . Certainly i know its something that you look at as the mayor of a city that has so many voters of color in it. But what do you think about what youre seeing republicans expected to be unified in voting no on this voting Rights Bill as you see laws passed in states across the country, based on a lie about the election, that will have the effect of limiting Voting Access for voters of color . I think its disgraceful. And thats why im going to the congress today. Our democracy, our right as americans, our right as taxpayers guarantees us the right to the ballot box. And we in the district of columbia, for 200 years, have been denied representation in the capitol of the united states of america. So, yes, im concerned about all the State Legislatures that are moving this partisan obvious legislation to block people of color from voting. But im very concerned, as all americans should be, that 700,000 people here in washington, d. C. , dont have two senators and our congresswoman doesnt have a vote. I am a washington, d. C. , resident myself. And i will tell you, having lived in a number of other places, it is it feels weird to not have a Voting Member of congress who represents you or a senator, but i will also say that despite this being the issue that comes up over and over again youre going to testify about this today it feels like it never changes. And i wonder, you know, what youre going to say today about that. Well, it has changed. We have seen momentum grow supporting statehood. The president of the united states has issued a statement of administration policy. The leader of the senate, the speaker of the house all supporting d. C. Statehood. More senators than ever supporting d. C. Statehood. So it is important that we remember the progress that weve made. But its not enough. We have to seat two senators from the district of columbia in the united states senate. Thats the only way that we have equal footing with other americans who pay taxes like we do. So we are not only reliant on the President And Leader schumer to protect democracy with voting rights, but also with admitting d. C. As the 51st state. I want to ask you about something you did this weekend that was pretty fascinating, the response you got. You spent juneteenth out knocking on doors in washington, d. C. , with Anthony Fauci who was greeted, along with you, as a bit of a celebrity. And you were targeting the anacostia neighborhood, which is a particularly disadvantaged neighborhood in washington, d. C. , as you were trying to encourage people to get vaccinated. And i thought looking at the responses that you got, it was pretty interesting. Tell us there was some disinformation that you came up against as you were talking to people trying to encourage them to get vaccinated. Sure. Well, actually, anacostia is a particularly historic neighborhood with great hard working people, wonderful education facilities, and a growing commercial corridor. And we were at the High School. They happened to be celebrating their graduation, kicking off a wonderful Raffle And Program and going door to do with dr. Fauci. Youre absolutely right. A neighbor stopped us and said, wheres dr. Fauci . Because i trust you. Its so important that people have the ability to get their questions answered and go get vaccinated. So were doing everything that we can to bring vaccine closer to people, and we have a Fun Raffle where were going to be raffling off a brandnew jeep wrangler. The chances of winning are fantastic so we encourage people to go to anacostia High School, saint elizabeths or Ron Brown High School to get their first shot and enter to win the new jeep. You did have someone according to the Washington Post, who said something akin to, you know the shot does other things. We know it doesnt. We know some people have Side Effects to varying degrees. I had none, having my shot. My husband had a few. But were very glad to be vaccinated. How do you combat that in your community . People who have ideas about the vaccine that just arent true. Well, we know thats the case. Its the case here in washington. Its the case in states all over the united states, and i think that we made some progress just knocking on peoples doors and talking to them face to face. The same gentleman who gave us every possible reason not to get vaccinated also shared a story. He said that he, his mom, and his sister vowed not to get vaccinated because of a lot of the myths that are circulating out there on Social Media and other places. And then he said, but my mom and my sister, they got vaccinated anyway. So i hear story after story like that. People who werent ready to get vaccinated a couple of months ago are now ready to get vaccinated. They see the city opening up. Theyre going back to work. Their kids are going back to school. And they recognize that they dont want to be unprotected. Open d. C. And an open united states of america, a person really puts himself or their family at risk if they dont have the vaccine. And we want to remind families that kids 12 years old and older should get the vaccine, too. Everybody wants kids to be back in school full time five days a week inperson. D. C. Schools are going to be open full time five days a week inperson. And we thank alink all of our Kd Teachers should be vaccinated. Im looking forward to that. There was a judge who dismissed black lives matter from lawsuits. It involves Donald Trump and his administration for the clearing of protesters at lafayette last year. They say there is little evidence of a conspiracy. And i wonder how you react to that. I actually havent read that decision or heard something about it. I think you know how i feel about federal Law Enforcement and the United States Military being used for a Photo Op at lafayette square. I thought that was a disgraceful act of president ial power that should never happen in the united states of america. Mayor Muriel Bowser of washington, d. C. , thank you so much for being with us this morning. Thank you. All right. It is election day here in new York City where for the first time Rank Choice Voting is underway in todays mayoral primary. So, what and how will that play in . What are some of the other biggest issues in the selection . Im joined now by senior political editor harriet. N harry. Its a big day. Nice to see you. There are other things important, namely this is a democratic primary, and democrats have a choice here that the nation is looking at in terms of will they perhaps go more progressive or more moderate. Thats exactly right. Weve seen this across primaries. So far the moderate mainstream candidates in 2021 have been winning most of those primaries. Obviously Joe Biden won last year in the democratic primary in 2020. This time around, look, Maia Wiley represents the left wing. The moderate mainstream. Erik adams, catherine garcia, andrew yang, those tend to be the top candidates on the moderate mainstream. Its going to be interesting to see whether or not new York City follows the pattern of the rest of the nation and goes with a more moderate mainstream candidate. We dont know at this point. Thats one of the big things were looking for over the next few days. All right, the Rank Choice Voting system, how does this work . Lets go to school, okay. You can see we have all this font here. This is how it works. Voters can rank up to five choices. The candidate with the lowest Vote Total after a round is eliminated, the Voter Choices are allocated to the next highest preference. If their current choice is eliminated in a round and this process goes on and on until a candidate wins when they have 50 plus one of the vote. Basically the bottom person keeps on getting knocked off round after round after round until someone gets above 50. There have been rank choice elections in other places. What do we know in terms of the outcomes after the first round . If someone is leading after the first round, how often do they win . They usually do, in fact, win. 96 of the time the same lieder in the first round and the final round. There is this 4 of the time where it does have a different leader where the person leading after the first round doesnt necessarily win. This happened in oakland mayoral elections, for example. This is a real possibility even if its low we could have somebody who leads in the first round but doesnt necessarily lead in the final round. With the polls being generally close as they are, i wouldnt be shocked if we end up in the 4 camp. Whats the margin you think the leader would need to lead by tonight to feel relative lyft safe . Double digits. If were looking at a 5 point race, 6 point race, we could be in the 4 of the camp. Its not just who is leading, its how much theyre leading by. That should give us a clue whether or not the first round and final round leader differ. What do we know about the turnout . Its not been that horrible. This is historic turnout in democratic history. 2021, already voted, 275,000. Were easily going to be 2,000. 31,000. The real question is are we going to get to the 2001, 2013, somewhere between 700, 800,000. Its a possibility. I will say if you ask the campaigns, there is a massive disagreement how many people are actually going to turnout. That could make a big difference whether or not the polls are accurate. Look, this is a primary. This is unusual. There is early voting. We havent had that before in new York City. Its an unusual slate of candidates, Rank Choice Voting. Im not sure. This throws another Wild Card into the equation. I was going to say there is a Sense Turnout is low, but it may end up being on the higher end. By The End of today, harry. Were not going to know the winner for awhile. Right. Well have you back. Up next, the former president s financial chief under pressure. Will he flip on his boss . As a different america is emerging from the pandemic, why u. S. Workers are among the first to feel the difference. Plus not an heir from the Disney Fortune Spilling the beans on how the wealthy beat the system and pay next to nothing in taxes. This morning about 45 of the country is fully vaccinated. The country really is opening up, but as thats happening, it is revealing a nation thats different, very different than it was prepandemic. Peoples lives are different, the Eat Economy is different and the challenges are different. We want to start with the challenges. A surge in crime and Gun Violence. Last night in st. Louis seven people were shot and three killed in a shooting. Over the weekend, ten mass shootings with seven people killed and at least 45 injured in the country. There have been nearly 300 mass shooters this year. That is according to the Gun Violence archive. That is a 39 increase compared to the same time period in 2020, and here in new York City murders, shootings, Hate Crimes are up when compared to the same time last year according to the n. Y. P. D. And its not just violent crime. Last week there was this daytime Shoplifting Incident captured on video at a walgreens in san francisco. It highlighted what they say has become a consistent problem for Chain Drugstores in that city. As we are trying to determine what are the ramifications of coming out of a pandemic, what are the frustrations that americans are dealing, how are we dealing with mental health, how are we dealing with some of the stressors related to unemployment. So what else has transformed since February Of 2020 . Well, the economy, which its barely recognizable from 16 months ago, including the leverage that american workers now hold. A set of workers competing with Each Other for jobs that are scarce, the companies compete to attract workers. Thats becoming a reality. The Wall Street Journal report reports a tight Labor Market plus shrinking Labor Force is giving lowwage workers perks previously reserved for white collar employees. Were talking bounuses, competig offers. The journal reports the pay for those is rising faster with high School Diploma is rising. The global institute predicts nearly a quarter of workers are likely to work at least a day or two from home each week, and also changing how we shop these daily necessities that we buy online. Online Grocery Sales grew 54 in 2020. And then the surge in Home Prices, median Sale Price for a Home Hit A Record of 341,000 in april. Thats the highest since 1999. Singlefamily Home Price soared by 20 from last year, and its not just homes were talking about here. The economy is reopening fully and soaring demand together with Supply Chain issues and material shortages pushing prices higher. Key question now is how long will it all last . We know someone can give us an answer to that question. The anchor of Cnn Newsroom at 9 00 a. M. , Poppy Harlow joins us. Great to see you. Great to be on the big show. Good morning, guys. When we talk about the leverage that workers have,s why do they have it right now and how long do you think its going to last . Isnt it amazing . It really is. I think its so significant, im fascinated by this story. I dont have the answer to that question of how long it will last, nor does the federal reserve and well get to that in a moment. But its a conciergence of factors. The pandemic made us all assess our lives, what is the value of our time, right. And theres the stimulus and then there is the extended Unemployment Benefits that have helped some, some states have stopped the extension of it. That remains for a lot of people. Theres about 3 1 2 Million people fewer in the work force, people that retired early. So what does that mean . It means a tighter Labor Force and exactly what Joe Biden wanted. That was a month ago in cleveland when biden said that and now its true. I mean, you have amazon giving thousand dollarsplus bonuses to some people. Mcdonalds raising wages, having drive up fares to hire people. You have Taco Bell giving paid parental leave as all companies should, but theyre doing it for their store managers. It is now a complete reversal of power and i think its fascinating. So that allows, look, a lot of people have enjoyed working from home. Are they like the flexibility of it, they want to be able to do it part time or they have to . Or they have to, right, or they have no child care. These things dont turn on a dime just because things reopen. There was an a university judgement period. How does that affect their desire to say, in the near term i want to do this, or long term. Its so interesting because youve seen what the banks have done. You guys covered that last week. Banks are saying, come back to work in september. Morgan stanley, you can go out to dinner or come to work. Hes right. They generally pay a lot so people may be more in Sen Timized to not leave those jobs. But there are a lot of other companies that are saying, work from home if you can do the work as well as you could in the office. I think General Motors is taking an interesting approach. Mary barr is saying work appropriately, get the work done. What i would say is this group that studies it, workplace intelligence and we work, said 75 of employees are willing to give up a Big Perk for benefit to be able to choose. Thats a huge number. And if youre competing for talent in Silicon Valley or wall street, are you willing to lose those people because they dont want to come into the office . You know, you discuss it in a really interesting way. When you talk about economics, economists always want numbers in data, but its hard to get some of the data now on some of the phenomena that may be out there where people feel differently about their lives now. Yes. Shouldnt they . Yes. The people they love around them, some of them died from covid. We all got a lot more time with our children. I know thats affected ailll of us. Were reassessing whats the value of our time and our life. Youre right. You said last Week Jerome Powell came out and said we dont do that at all. He was asked what does the data show, where is this going to take our economy. He said this is an extraordinary and unusual time and we dont really have a template or any experience in a situation like this. So well see. But they have to deal with the near term, which is inflation. Sure. And if wages are going up at all these companies and stimulus remains, and a tight Labor Force, that is a recipe for higher inflation. We hope the White House is right, that its transitory or temporary. But they might not be, right . So youve got all that on the feds. Lumber prices are going down. They are. Like 1700 to now 600. I think It Hit maybe A Thousand or 600. Its going down. But that brings up housing. How expensive are houses . Its so weird with so many people who struggled economically during this crisis and still are. Yet houses are at these record prices. So people are talking about a rental crisis maybe being next. It is insane, the housing prices, i will say, especially in d. C. As im watching. I can imagine. Can i end on one thing . I think this is a moment where maybe well actually see the Economy Work for more people. We talk about its a talking point, when is that going to happen. I actually think this might be the moment when that can happen. And can we as an economy and as a country come together in a way that it does work for more people. Maybe. Youre not saying it didnt come at a cost. Huge cost. Were here where we are now. It may make a turn for the better. Great to see you. Well see you again in about 34 minutes. Its a nice show. I hope so. Top of the hour with Poppy Harlow. Up next, the looming decision for Donald Trumps Money Man. Will he cooperate with prosecutors who are investigating his boss . And how the former president literally wanted to make a federal case out of rerun television. We made Usaa Insurance for members like martin. An Air Force Veteran made of doing whats right, not whats easy. So when a hailstorm hit, usaa reached out before he could even inspect the damage. Thats how you do it right. Usaa insurance is made just the way martins family needs it with hasslefree claims, he got paid before his neighbor even got started. Because doing right by our members, thats whats right. Usaa. What youre made of, were made for. Usaa this is the sound of change. Its the sound of low Cash Mode from Pnc Bank giving you the options and extra time needed to help you avoid an overdraft fee. Low Cash Mode on virtual wallet from Pnc Bank. One way were making a difference. What if you could have the perspective to see more . At morgan stanley, a global collective of thought leaders offers investors a broader view. We see companies protecting the bottom line by putting people first. We see a bright future, still hungry for the ingenuity of those ready for the next challenge. Today, we are translating decades of experience into strategies for the road ahead. We are morgan stanley. Talk to me. What do we got . When you have xfinity xfi, with blazing speed. Into strategies for the road ahead. [ screaming ] a powerful connection. Thats another level. And ultimate control. Power us up. You can do more than you ever thought possible. Yes hold on. Get a powerful and secure connection you can count on. Only with xfinity xfi. And see f9 only in theaters. Hes the Money Man and now Trump Organization Cfo Allen Weisselberg is staring down a big decision. Cooperate with prosecutors against former President Donald Trump and the trump organization, or face potential criminal charges of his own. Joining us now is tristan snell, a former Assistant Attorney General for new york state. He also led the prosecution against trump university. And the Washington Post leehere reporting weisselberg, tristan, is regularly going into work, going about his day. What weve heard some people say is, why would he be doing that if hes thinking of flipping . But you say i say he could still be going in to work every Day And Thinking of flipping. In fact, a lot of times prosecutors are going to tell a potential cooperator, play it cool, be natural. Do what you would normally do. Weisselberg could be going into the office and collecting more information while hes there. So the fact hes going in doesnt necessarily tell me that much. Youve spoken about how much Alan Weisselberg knows about the former president and the family. How big is that for the case . Its not a must have. Its a nice to have. A lot of people online were flipping out over this over the last like day or so saying, oh, if they cant get weisselberg to flip the whole case is not going to happen. Thats not true. There is so much other evidence in the case in terms of emails. We know how important emails can be. Trump himself is not on email. Trump himself is not on email. But we know there are recordings of meetings. We know about the famous Recording Cohen took. He said there were others he provided to prosecutors. That could be the tip of the iceberg about tape reportings. We dont know about that. Were talking about the intent to make these fraudulent statements. If youve got one version of a spreadsheet that has the correct numbers and then you have another version of a spreadsheet that has the fake numbers, then youre showing that there was clearly an intent to move from the one set to the other. You know, it doesnt need to be the Gotcha Moment of getting somebody to testify and say this happened. It could be much more boring, but still actually get a guilty verdict. His daughterinlaw is cooperating, giving a lot of information to prosecutors, tristan, and we know some of the Data Points about what theyre looking at to put pressure on weisselberg with, and that includes for instance, the payment of tuition for his grand kids. When you look at these things that we know about what they are looking into personally for weisselberg, how much leverage does that really give prosecutors . Are these bigdeal items . It can be added up. I think the fact that theyre pursuing all of these other angles and now theyre going after the Body Guard Cala mari, it shows that theyve got enough resources on the case now that they can actually start pursuing those. If youre short staffed, youre not going after the secondary witnesses or secondary targets. Youre just trying to keep your head above water. I think it shows now that maybe the new york ags office is involved, too, and potentially there is more staffing on this. Theyre able to try to see if they can go after some of those other angles and get whatever leverage they can. You say can be. Thats not exactly a slam dunk. Based on what you know and youve got experience with this organization. Do you think weisselberg will flip . I think theres a good shock that he will. It might take an indictment to get him to cooperate. His Deal Wont be as good the longer he waits, the worse of a deal hes going to get. Its possible theyre in the middle of tough negotiations right now trying to get him to cooperate or hes trying to get total immunity and not actually face any charges at all, and the prosecutors are trying to say, look, youre going to be guilty, youre going to plea. We can get you a reduced sentence. Maybe you can get reduced prison time. There is going to be a Charge And Prison time. That might be where they are in negotiations. Maybe well find out soon, Kara Scannell is reporting this is in the advance stage. Perhaps this will be moving towards a conclusion finally. Tristan snell, thank you so much. Thank you. Up next,ed strong Man Leader defying the u. S. With new crackdowns on opponents. And former President Trumps idea to quarantine tourists on an island famous for holding terror suspects. Migrant children desperate to be reunited with family in the united states are having to wait weeks in largely inadequate government holding facilities. Cnns Priscilla Alvarez joins us with more. Reporter thats right. He summed it up and said, quote, every day i feel really sad. This is a boy who has been in a temporary facility for more than 60 days. Now, these are facilities that fall under the Health And Human Services department. That department is charged with the care of unaccompanied children and they have facilities across the country. But because of the Record Number of children who came to the u. S. This year, they had to open temporary facilities. Otherwise known as Emergency Intake sites. Now, attorneys have been visiting these facilities to assess conditions as part of an ongoing settlement and what they found is that weeks after these facilities have been stood up, issues still persist. They report, for example, children in crowded conditions with a lack of privacy, very little time outdoors, as well as limited shower time, limited time to call parents and family in the united states, and really a sense of desperation among children. Now, they are at these facilities to reunite with family in the united states. Be it parent, relatives or legal guardians. But until they get reunited, they are waiting in these facilities. And one of the attorneys said that is the most frequent stressor they have, john. As always, thank you for your reporting on this. Keep us posted. Reporter thank you. Democracy in peril in nicaragua as a 5th president ial candidate is defined. 15 Opposition Leaders have been arrested charged with vague socalled National Security Violations. Human rights groups say this is an overt attempt by President Daniel Ortega to Shutdown Dissent ahead of elections in november. Cnns raphael has more. Reporter in mexico city, the crackdown against the opposition in nicaragua is not letting up. Miguel, president ial candidate, was taken into custody sunday in managua. Hes the fifth to be detained since the beginning of the month. Now there are at least 15 members of the opposition in detention for alleged National Security Violations including four other president ial candidates, activists and even a banker. Nicaragua will hold president ial elections in less than five months, and the Opposition Claims President Ortega is making sure he will have a clear path to be reelected to a fourth term. Nicaraguas Daniel Ortega, one of the strong Men Embracing Practices to consolidate power, its happening all over the world. Anna navarro, thank you for joining us. Its great to be here in the studio since covid in new york. Its great to be able to see you in person, hug you, kiss you, tell stories. I know whats happening in nicaragua is personal to you. When you see Daniel Ortega going to extraordinary ends to maintain power, its also not unique now in the world. There seems to be this antidemocratic trend. Whats amazing about whats going on in nicaragua first of all, let me say thank you to you, thank you to cnn for covering it because its gotten very little coverage. I think parliament of it is because just how common its become among strong men to do this. If ortega is taking a page out of Putins Book what hes doing to navalny, and castros book, castro in cuba, you squash the opposition. You put them in jail, harass them, attack them, ransack their houses, harass their families, and you make it impossible for there to be a real opposition and real democracy. As you say, its personal for me. I fled ortega. I fled that regime 40 some years ago. I cant believe i cannot believe that this is happening 40 years later, and it breaks my heart for a country like nicaragua which has been, you know, struck by so many natural and political disasters. And, john, the question is why should americans care. America should care because, you know, ricnicaragua is part of t region. Its going to affect trade, its going to affect the conminute and its going to affect immigration. Make no doubt when the political situation gets so bad in a place like nicaragua, like guatemala, like honduras, what we are seeing at the northern border, it will mean more of these child migrants. It will mean more immigrants, more people seeking political asylum. And so its something where i think the international the whole international community needs to be outraged. This guy is cracking down and putting in Jail Anybody who dares run against him. So, i want to ask you about something, turner a corner here separately that we have learned, its kind of a headline you might think, oh, my god, is this from the onion . Its not. A report cites President Trump wanted to send people to qgitmo. We have something live. Hold that thought. You realize, oh, wait, its trump. It could have been entirely possible. Frankly seems to me like he would have sent half his White House because they all ended up getting covid. But joking aside, its a horrible, horrible concept. Its a horrible idea. It reckons back to leprosy colonies. Its a good thing the one exiled to not an island, but Donald Trump. I promised you, but i lied. The Daily Beast is reporting this morning there came a point after he watched a rerun of a Saturday Night live episode, President Trump basically suggested snl be investigated for unfair practices, that he was so upset about what he was seeing there, that he wanted the government to step in. And given what we have seen with the gag orders, with the investigations, with, you know, people looking into Reporters Text and emails even here in our own network, does that surprise us . This is a man who had i mean, im not one to talk, but basically the only thin part about him is his skin, and he has no sense of humor. And we saw that he weaponized the government to go after Anything And Anyone who was critical to him, even when it was in jest and satire. Do you think he would go after collin josts texts and emails . Do you think they have their Phone Records . Right. It should be very laurenne should be very worried about whats going to happen with him. It also tells you when we were when we kept getting told, oh, dont take him seriously. Oh, this is just hyperbolic. Hes just going after the media, you know, its not serious. When he was calling the media the enemy of the people and doing all these things. No, no, it really is serious and its affecting journalists lives and affecting the lives of people on tv who criticize him. It shows you just how serious it was. It wasnt just something coming out of his mouth. He was figuring out how to put a hurt on people, and that, again, goes back to that strong Man Thing that we started talking about. It is his tendencies. He is not a guy with democratic tendencies. You know, he fancies himself a Strong Man and thats what he had become. Anna, it is great to see you. Good to see you. Anna, thank you. So, how do the rich get richer and pay next to nothing in taxes . Were going to ask a wealthy heiress who knows next. And president bidens lastminute pitch to moderates for the pivotal test on voting Rights Legislation now just hours away. The tempurpedic breeze makes sleep. Feel. Cool. She is the granddaughter of roy o. Disney, and the grand niece of Walt Disney who together founded the Walt Disney company. Abigail, thank you so much for being with us this morning. You wrote this oped in the atlantic titled, i was taught from a young age to protect my dynastic wealth. You came to the decision to pull the curtain back on what i think so many americans are curious about. Why did you decide to do that . Well, because this is, this is a long, long many Generations Ethos and i think needs to be questioned. And its hard when youre raised in a family and youre taught something from very young to ask questions about those things. But looking around, the way our society is currently structured, it really is time for wealthy people to ask themselves some hard questions. So, you talk about lets just talk about kind of the Brass Tax of this. You say that you came into a significant amount of money at the Tender Age of 21, as you put it, and you became an Asset Manager before a lot of people get their first apartment. What were you taught by whom were you taught to do . Well, you know, it kind of starts with your parents. You know how families teach things. They dont just sit you down and tell you things. They show you what they value and its in the air. And one of the assumptions was that you would work very hard in your lifetime to take what you inherited and turn it into more so that your children would have more than you had. That was an assumption, a Baseline Assumption that was just written into everything from the beginning. So you say you talk about the methods and practices here. You know, in the words on their own might make someones eyes glaze over, but theyre very important. So i want folks to stay with us on this. You say offsetting income with losses and unrelated businesses, Structuring Assets to grow rather than generate income. Borrowing against those assets rather than generating income. You say these methods and practices are so downright mundane and commonly applied that most rich people dont see them as unethical, but you see them as unethical. Well, i do. Those are varying levels of unethical, but, for instance, take borrowing against your assets for cash needs. That is a way of relying on the growth and the value of your assets to create material things in your life without actually paying taxes on the growth of those assets. So youre benefiting by the growth without ever paying a Capital Capital gains tax. This is all possible because we dont tax growth, we tax work. And the fact is that people are sitting on their rear ends on their couches earning and not paying taxes on money while people are going out every day to a job and working their butts off just to make ends meet. And that just seems like an upside down structure. You compare the dynamics of wealth to that of addiction. Tell us about that. Well, i do think that an addict has the same pattern every time. No matter what the drug is, you take a drink, it feels good, that first drink. You take a second drink. The next night you come back to two drinks and that gets you the feeling you were looking for. Then before you know it, three drinks, four drinks, five drinks in, you have to go further to look for the feeling youre trying to have. And so when you have things, you have to have more things, anything you have turns into what is normal. And so there are people flying private aircraft right now who would rather be shot than get on a first Class Seat on a normal airline because it would mean they would have to walk through an air terminal. And that is terribly dangerous to democracy, to society because there are people, large swaths of people who are separating them so categorically separating themselves, so categorically from Everything Everyone else experiences that then when they turn around and they use money and translate it to political power, they dont have any idea what kind of lives regular people live. Thats a very good point. I feel like we are just scratching the surface of your oped here. It is a fascinating read, abigail. Thank you so much for doing it and for talking to us about it. Abigail disney. Thanks. And just ahead, the showdown over voting rights. Its coming to a head just hours from now on capitol hill. You need a financial plan that can help grow and protect your money.
