A brutal reminder of just how terrifying that day really was, despite what some republicans are trying to get you to believe. The efforts by some of those republicans to whitewash and literally rewrite the history of Donald Trumps complicity in the deadly siege is reaching new levels. Cnns Jessica Schneider is joining me live In Washington with the very latest on this. Jessica, will you walk us through this new video just released . Reporter yeah, i will. To note, first off, cnn and other outlets, theyve been fighting to get this footage, as well as other videos, released. These videos have been shown in court by prosecutors and now the public is getting this glimpse of what officers faced battling back the mob, trying to get into the capitol. This particular video is from an officers body camera. A warning, there are profanities and a lot of Graphic Video here. You fucking piece of Shit Attack America . Fuck that come on, take your shit off. Take your shit off. Reporter really whats most disturbing about this particular video is its one of the few firsthand accounts weve seen of how these officers were trying to defend the capitol and they had to engage in this Handtohand Combat with the rioters. Prosecutors have shown several videos from Police Body cameras in court, but Media Outlets like cnn and others have been fighting to get more of this video, were still waiting to actually get many more of these videos out to the public that will show some of this police perspective. Were expecting that in the coming days and weeks. When it comes to this former marine in the video wearing the red jacket, thomas webster, prosecutors, in addition to this video, theyve also released photos in the charging documents. They show webster grabbing at the officer, who was wearing this body camera, and then also photos showing webster throwing the officer to the ground. At this Point Webster is charged with seven federal crimes that includes assaulting police, unlawfully entering the Capitol Grounds with a dangerous weapon. Hes pleaded not guilty to all the charges, but the video, seeing what these officers went through, it really does put a whole new dimension on the stories, perspectives, of what these officers did and the defendants facing charges. Jessica, thank you very much for that. Joining me for more is John War Hood And Cnn national security analyst, a former fbi special agent. Your reaction to this new video . Kate, its another reminder that this was a domestic Terrorist Attack at our capitol and we need to continue to be reminded of that. Now, one thing, kate, these videos are kind of coming out sporadically and its likely because judges are considering these on a casebycase basis. These people are considering whether releasing these Might Prejudice these defendants if they end up going to trial, so theres irony that the Rule Of Law is protecting these defendants and even though they were trying to overthrow it. But this is were going to see more of this and its really important to continue to play these and to make them visible, even if theyre disturbing, because its the only way to continue to counter the false narratives that are coming out, trying to portray this as something that was peaceful or, you know, righteous or not something that needs to be where the people need to be held accountable. To that joint, john, this video, one thing it does is shakes you back to reality of how terrifying and horrific that day really was, but this also flies in the face of what some republicans are pushing and many more are allowing right now, which is a whitewash of this history, and more specifically a whitewash of the history of trumps presidency. What is remarkable to me as someone who has covered politics Over A Span that began with ronald reagan, who defined his approach to international relations by standing up to what he called the evil empire out of moscow, is that weve gotten to the point where a republican party, which was dominant nationally in reagans day, which has been fading, losing strength since, is now in a position where its Propaganda Stream has, in effect, merged with the kremlin Propaganda Stream. So you saw at the summit when Vladimir Putin was challenged on his record of Human Rights and his poisoning of Alexei Navalny and Suppression Of Dissent within russia, he said, well Look at the united states, you had protesters at the capitol and one of them was shot and killed. That echos what youre hearing from some elements of the republican party that ashli babbitt, the police were lying in wait for her and shot her, as opposed to police defending the capitol against this violent assault. The same is true on issues of ukraine and other elements of republican messaging that sought to absolve, Donald Trump, who of course was assisted by russia in both of his campaigns. Russia interfered in both of his campaigns to try to boost Donald Trump and then Donald Trump as president took a series of actions retoricly, mainly, to advance the strategic objectives of russia and Vladimir Putin, weakening nato, dividing the united states, his own defense secretary, the first president in our lifetime who did not try to unify the american people, he tried to divide us. That is the Kremlins Objective and the republican party has stood with him throughout. And, asha, to take it a step further, the fact theres a push of a new Conspiracy Theory that right wing is pushing that the fbi was behind the insurrection, we talked about this yesterday on the show, a wild Conspiracy Theory that they would prefer to believe that the government is somehow behind this, instead of what it was. As we see in the video, a retired Nypd Cop attacking the capitol. This is not so different, sadly, than 9 11 truther conspiracies. Yes, these events often will spawn conspiracy theories, but as john just pointed out, whats different is that they are being promulgated by elected officials, and also that they tend to mirror some of the goals of our hostile adversaries, and i would say i think there are some republicans who have figured out that active measures, you know, creating chaos, dividing the population, fostering mistrust in our institutions, in election outcomes, in Law Enforcement, is actually advantageous, and this is kind of a spiral, kate, because obviously as they do this, the base that is really going to get on board with this, there are going to be people that are like i dont know that i can get on board and then that justifies further engaging in, you know, all of these Election Shenanigans to try to rig the rules in order to continue to still be able to win elections. Its really all connected together in terms of fostering ultimately a theory of the Big Lie thats used to justify, you know, taking measures, Voter Suppression and then also encouraging their base to even potentially do similar actions like this again. A spiral is a good way to describe it. The thing that is not known is what can stop the spiral, because it does not no matter what you see with your eyes and hear with your ears with these videos, it does not seem to be slowing, stopping, changing the views of these Conspiracy Theoryists, which is terrifying. Moves on Capitol Hill over Voting Rights legislation, yet as soon as those moves are made they slam up against the logjam that just is ever present once again. The latest example, Mitch Mcconnell, the top republican in the senate, is now vowing to reject a proposal just released by moderate democratic senator Joe Manchin on Voting Rights, a Proposal Manchin billed as a compromise. Still, the senates democratic leader is promising to push for votes next week on the main voting Rights Bill that passed the house. Thats clearly going to hit a wall of opposition as well. I lay all of that out to bring in Lauren Fox from Capitol Hill because its a real question of where things head now. What is the actual deal with Manchins Promise . Who is he trying to negotiate with and what does happen now . Reporter Look, this has been a bill that has been circulating for more than a year now and essentially what it does is it is a massive expansion of Voting Rights and it deals with finance reforms. Manchin was the lone democratic holdout on that bill so hes been working with several other members, including senator tim cane, as well as his own leadership, trying to figure out if there was a compromise that he could work out with leadership to ensure that he would support a vote, a procedural vote next week. Schumer, the majority leader, has been saying this is crucial and he needed to put it on the floor by The End of this work period. However, just because manchin supports a proposal does not mean youre going to get the ten republican votes that you needed in order to make it a law. This really is about democrats trying to get unified, making sure that they have a stated position so that when theyre out on the Campaign Trail they can argue that republicans are the ones standing in the way of Voting Rights legislation. Now, mcconnell has made it very clear, he is not for this proposal, nor is he for any compromise that manchin is developing. And we should note that this conversation is still ongoing. There isnt final legislation at this point, but we do know that on tuesday there will be a procedural vote and, Given What Mcconnell has said, we do not expect republicans, or at least ten republicans, to vote for it, kate. Guys, can i get a Gut Check from both of you. Lauren is great reporting on The Hill and she lays it out really well. At this point are democrats and republicans going through the motions here on Voting Rights reforms, april . I dont think theyre going through motions, to be honest. You have a lot of people, not just civil rights leaders, not just democrats on The Hill, but democrats who were highranking officials in former administrations, who are reaching out and reaching in, talking with Joe Manchin, trying to get him on the same page because this is very serious. Were now voting, again, without the full protections of the Voting Rights act, also you have states now with restrictive voting, and if there is a new federal law, any state that comes up with restrictive voting laws, the federal laws would not cover it. So this moment is real. Its Joe Manchin and then republicans. So this is an Uphill Battle, but well see where it lands. I mean, give me your Gut Check. Im cynical. I know i am. From my time on The Hill and all the time after that. But i just dont see this happening, not in this congress. Yeah, this is an Uphill Battle for democrats. They need 60 votes, right now it seems like they have 50, if that. But Joe Manchin being at the forefront of this bill is an important development. He is someone who has said he is not going to vote to get rid of the filibuster. If he sees republicans deciding to block this and not even give him a hearing, he may have some sympathy for the other democrats that want to get rid of the filibuster, because he is proposing something that he sees as Middle Of The Road and It Includes things that republicans like like a nationwide voter i. D. Standard. Right. If he cant even get a hearing from Mitch Mcconnell or an opening among his republican colleagues, it may give him some sympathy for people on his side of the aisle who want to get rid of the filibuster. Hes been strong saying he doesnt want to get rid of it, but this may change some of his calculus. May, may, though i would not say to any democrat who wants the filibuster changed to hold your breath. I know april would agree with my assessment on that. To toluse, let me ask you this. Stacey abrams says she is open to manchins proposal, even the voter i. D. Aspect. What Senator Manchin is putting forward are basic Building Blocks we need to ensure that democracy is accessible, no matter your geography. Our point is that the restrictions on the forms of i. D. Should meet the needs of the people. And what he is proposing makes sense. How big of a deal is that, what Stacey Abrams is saying, toluse . It is a big deal to have someone who has been at the forefront of the voting Rights Battle on the same page with Joe Manchin, who just a couple of weeks ago came out against the democrats lead voting Rights Bill. Hes proposed something he sees as a compromise and the fact that he has a wide swath of democrats on board, theyre pushing something to stop this onslaught of Voting Rights restrictions in the states. If they cant get republicans on board, its a nice thing to have democratic unity, but you still need 60 votes and its going to be hard to get beyond the 50. Just to get 50 votes on something as contentious as Voting Rights is a pretty major development, and to have Stacey Abrams on the same side as Joe Manchin is a point of unity for democrats that they havent always had on contentious issues. I want to play for You Guys i hope you had a chance to see it, but for everyone, what 94yearold Opal Lee said to cnn after all of this. She is a woman who has fought for decades to make this happen. Shes saying, which i thought was so important to hear from her, as shes fought for this for so long, she is saying that this day is so important, obviously, but theres an element that shes not celebrating. When she says were still not free yet, shes talking about issues of housing, issues of access to capital. So many of the negatives that the black community, the descendants of slaves are still dealing with in 2021 in this nation. One person is dead and 12 others injured in a series of driveby shootings in the span of about an hour in the phoenix area. Police have a suspect in custody, but they still dont know exactly what happened. Cnns Kyung Lah has the latest. Reporter all of this took place in a 90minute period. It was just before the lunch hour, so a lot of people were out and about in the northwest suburbs of phoenix. This is an area thats a bit of an outlying area from downtown, and there are a lot of Retirement Communities in this particular area, where all of the shooting took place. There were a total of eight shooting scenes. It appears to be completely random. Police are describing them as driveby style shootings. Four people were shot, one killed, and the person who was killed, police say, appeared to have just been driving down the freeway, got shot, and then the car left the freeway, drove off the freeway, and somehow ended up in a concrete canal because of how random all of this is, police describe this as frightening, but also just senseless. We dont know the nexus, we dont have an idea of what this person was thinking when he went out and did this. Obviously we want to figure that out because theres a lot of scared people, a lot of people who this effected. Reporter a suspect was taken into custody, a firefighter, who heard the description of the white suv that the police were Looking for found it, saw it, called It In, and then police were able to take the suspect into custody peacefully. When International Travel Shut Down due to the pandemic last year, it was a major moment for the world. Well, this morning, the European Union is now recommending Lifting Travel restrictions for americans, regardless of their vaccination status. Joining me now for this and more the cnn medical analyst, D Dr. Lena wen, the former Health Commissioner of the city of baltimore. You say this decision, this recommendation by the eu, is a mistake. Why . I think its a lost opportunity, especially considering how much these countries in europe have gone through. Many of them have had substantial surges, loss of life, major shutdowns before. I mean, i really understand why they want tourism to come back, i just think that they could have put a vaccination requirement, or at the very least, say that testing is quarantine is required, but you can be waived from that if you have proof of vaccination. And i hope that there should also be a warning to individuals here in the u. S. And other places that if you are unvaccinated, you are at risk. You are at risk yourself and you are a risk to others. So ideally, those who are unvaccinated should not be traveling. Another aspect of all of this, theres a new study out of the uk that suggests that covid could actually lead to longterm loss of brain tissue. This Case Study examined Brain Imaging before and after the Coronavirus Infection and it Looked specifically at the potential effect on the Nervous System. It saw destruction of tissue in regions of the brain associated with smell. Obviously this is far above my understanding, my Ability And Capacity to understand. Can you explain to me what you think of this and what you think it means . Yeah, this is a very well done study, although we should mention that its a preprint, so it has not been accepted in a peerreviewed journal yet. However, it appears to have rigorous methodology and what it found is actually something very sobering, which is that for individuals who have recovered from covid19 infection, there seems to be longterm damage to their brain, that there is longterm loss of Brain Cells in certain parts. And i think whats the most concerning is that it really doesnt matter if the individual was mildly Symptom Attic or hospitalized. Even people who had mild illness that were never hospitalized seem to have this longterm effect as well. And i think this matters so much in these conversations because we hear people talking about, well, with these vaccines, we dont know what the longterm consequences are. Theres no reason to think that vaccines will have any longterm consequence, but there is a longterm consequence of getting covid19. So i hope that those who are unvaccinated should really think about these longterm effects. In my patients im also seeing individuals who have chronic fatigue, who have headaches and dizziness and palpitations many months after their illness. They still may not be able to taste or smell. Some of them have lost their hair. And i think these are the longterm consequences that we really have to consider as the effects of covid19. Really underscoring that you do not want to get this virus. You do not want to see these longterm effects. I also want to ask you about these reports of Heart Inflammation among teens and some young adults who have received a covid vaccine. The cdc says that these are rare cases, but they are Looking into it. But it is, as you well know, dr. Wen, it is going to have some parents secondguessing giving their kids a shot. What do you say about this . I think the investigation by the cdc is very important, although based on what we know so far, these are very rare cases. In addition, they are mild. To our knowledge, No One has died from this Heart Inflammation, it lasts for a period of time and goes away and people generally fully recover. Again, one has to weigh the potential risk of this myocarditis, the inflammation of the heart muscle, versus the myocarditis that could occur from getting covid19. And so, again, im the parent of two young kids. I want for the studies to be done for young children, but for older kids, for kids 12 and older who are eligible to receive the vaccine, if i had a child in this age range, i would absolutely get them vaccinated today. Dr. Wen, thank you so much. Appreciate your time. So another aspect of the pandemic, the debate over returning to the office. Almost every industry is facing this question now, how and when to bring all of their employees back safely. One industry seems to have it settled, at least for now. Wall street. Matt, ive been wondering this as ive been seeing more and more from Wall Street, the big banks, why are Wall Street leaders why is Wall Street kind of on the leading edge of this . Its a great question. Clearly some of the bosses on Wall Street are ready to turn the page on this era of virtual work, and in talking to employees and executives and others who follow the industry, i think theres three themes that come across. One is culture. There is a long history on Wall Street of learning by doing and apprenticeship, and zoom calls and slack messages are no substitute for that ontheground Training And Camaraderie you get in the office. Two, Wall Street is hyper competitive and No One wants to lose out on a deal because of a bad wifi connection, particularly when your rivals are already going back to the office. And the other big thing is cyber and legal risks. These companies are more vulnerable around cyber when you have a lot of people working from home and this wave of Ransomware Attacks has made everyone on high alert around cybersecurity right now. And you mentioned culture. If part of this is about culture, im wondering what youre hearing from those who work in the industry, kind of at various levels. Has the pandemic brought about a Culture Shift at all, do you think . Clearly there is a divide here. I think that managers generally are more eager to get their teams back in the office, lower level workers are not in as much of a rush, particularly parents. I talked to one father of three young children and he said he was caught off guard by the fact that they had to go back to work last month, and he said its really challenging, especially if you dont have Child Care in place. I think the risk here is that if Wall Street pushes too hard here, its going to turn some people off and they may decide they want to work somewhere else. Silicon valley, you can make a lot of money working there, a lot of people, a lot of the best and brightest minds are attracted to go there, and they have been more flexible around this back to the office topic. Reporter first of all, i can tell you that what we can see out here are little dots of islands that we should not be seeing because if you went back to when Lake Meade was full in the early 80s, that would have been completely covered. Since then weve lost 143 feet by the Hoover Dam and in that space you could put the statue of liberty. Think of how tall it is in the l harbor. And the water that comes through the Hoover Dam comes from the Snow Pack in the colorado rockies. I went up to see that for this story and i can tell you that the Snow Pack is basically gone and a huge part of the issue here is that heat is starting to pick up earlier in the year and so that is melting the Snow Pack and that is leading to drought. So climate experts say the Climate Change is playing into this because we are seeing these hot, hot temperatures, which are leading to drought, and that drought is leading to more hot, hot temperatures. I can tell you for this week we have been out here traveling around the west. It has been over 110 degrees almost every single day. Punishing heat. What are you hearing from people . Anecdotally were seeing an increase from even 2019, which was one of our busiest years across the national parks system. Yellow Stone Visitation was up 50 over memorial Day Weekend from 2019. Were really seeing this in the most popular destination national parks, Yellow Stone, yosemite, Grand Teton, acadia, shenandoah. People should plan ahead, come early, check out our website and follow along so you have the best visit possible. A little peace and quiet, sure. When you see these pictures, you probably dont have a monitor there, the pictures were showing folks were all from Yellow Stone. Whats been your reaction, happy or nervous . Were so excited to welcome americans back to their national parks as more people are vaccinated and traveling this summer. But we want people to plan ahead. Most importantly, so they have a place to stay. Many of the most popular destination national parks, the Big Ones you think of, the campgrounds and the hotels are either fully booked or nearly fully booked through labor day. We know that the Park Service has had Budget Cuts in recent years, what is the strain that now this kind of flood of folks coming in is putting on staff . Do you have all the people, all the resources that you need to handle this . Its always a challenge, i think we can always, always appreciate having more rangers to help visitors and take care of these places. The president s Budget Request for fiscal year 22 asks for 3. 5 billion for national parks that will help us modernize our fur, invest in conservation and enhance opportunities for visitors and address some of these challenges.
