Cnn exclusive, new information about a retired marine serving nine years in a russian prison as his parents plead with President Biden to secure his release. A journalist, congress, and a Sprawling Collection reaching the former white House Counsel and his wife. And new overnight, the u. S. Is assessing reports of a possible leak of a nuclear plant in china. Authorities are calling it an imminent threat. Good Monday Morning to our viewers in the United States and all Around The World. It is june 14th. President bidens first overseas trip as Commander In Chief entering a crucial next phase. The president now in brussels, arriving there Last Night, due to meet with nato leaders. Well bring that to you live. The summit comes as he looks to reassert american leadership on the World Stage and strengthen global partnerships in england. President biden is working to reset the relationship with nato allies after his predecessor who frequently railed against nato questioned the need for the alliance and argued the u. S. Was contributing more than its fair share to the group. Among the many items, members will announce the new strategy to address threats from china and russia. This is ahead of President Bidens Facetoface Meeting with President Putin In Geneva. They agree on one thing. The relationship between the two countries are at a low point. Its about making myself very clear what the conditions are to get a better relationship with russia. Were not looking for conflict. Were looking to resolve those actions, which we think are inconsistent with international norms. Ahead of this biden putin meeting, cnn is reporting on a journalist in a prison in russia. His parents hope that their Sons Release will be part of President Bidens Summit Agenda with putin. Lets bring in Cnns Matthew Chance whos live In Geneva with more on this. Reporter theres a list as long as your arm, issues that will be discussed between President Biden and President Putin when they meet at the Facetoface Meeting. Both countries have prisoners in each others jails. Theyre calling on both President Biden and President Putin to try and find a way to have Trevor Read released. He was arrested last year for endangering the life of a policeman after a night of drinking. He was sentenced to nine years in prison. Since then hes contracted covid, and hes in a very bad medical state according to those who have had access to him. Heres a letter from trevor reeds parents. Wed like to ask President Putin to let us speak to trevor, restore access, and for authorities to be completely transparent about whatever minimal care is provided to him. Were terribly worried about his health and well being, and were pleading with President Biden and President Putin to work out something. This has gone on for too long. Thats a statement from Paula And Joey reed, the parents of trevor reed. It comes a few days after they received their last communication with him in the form of a letter. It was handwritten in russian because apparently according to the russian prison rules, you have to write letters in russian so the authorities can read it. Heres sort of a translation of what he said. Said his Blood Pressure was very high, telling his parents, ive got pain in my lungs, i suffer from a cough from time to time, ive lost several kilograms in weight. We arent allowed to go for walks. Hes saying that he hasnt had much access, either, To Embassy officials, and hes concerned whether they even know about his case. Look. This is one of the issues that the two President S are going to speak on. I spoke with the kremlin a couple of days ago. They say, look, its a sensitive issue, but it is likely to be on the agenda when the two President S meet on wednesday. What is the President Saying so far . Reporter in the case of trevor reed, the diplomats in moscow have been really critical of the way his trial had been carried out. They called it the theater of the an sufrmtd they say he has received none of the letters the family has sent, theyre gravely concerned about his health, and constant requests for access to his Health And Update on his medical condition has been ignored. As far as were aware, u. S. Diplomats have not been able to be in contact with trevor reed, who, again, has been sick in a russian prison for the past three weeks, and so its a very serious matter indeed. All right, matthew. We will be watching that as things develop in switzerland. And well speak with his Parents Joey and Paula Reid who will be appearing later on new day. Joey, thanks so much for being with us. What are the prospects, you think, this meeting, this summit can secure his release . Well, i think both sides, the kremlin and the White House, are trying to keep expectations quite low for this meeting. Theyre both saying theres not going to be a lot of deliverables. Its worth thinking back to 2010 when there was a very dramatic exchange of people accused of espionage. This was done under president obamas tenure, the age of the socalled reset where the russian government and u. S. Government agreed to have two meet on the tarmac and have the espionage cross the tarmac, get on their planes, and go home. The question is are russia and the u. S. Capable of a deal like that, kind of Back Room Deal that does require quite a bit of trust and open communication. At the moment, the u. S. Does not have an ambassador in moscow, and moscow does not have an ambassador in washington. Embassy staff in both countries have been drastically cut, so theres not a lot of communication going on. Theres No One Else who can meet at this point. When you say both sides are setting the expectations low, that may be the understatement of the century. Both are saying the Relationship Hasnt been this bad in decades, and then you have Vladimir Putin out there doing these interviews, this posturing, which clearly he wants people in russia and the world to see, including this interview with nbc news. Watch this. Mr. President , are you a killer . Translator over my tenure, ive gotten used to attacks from all kinds of angles, all kinds of areas, under all kinds of pretexts, and none of it surprises me. As far as harsh rhetoric, i think this is an expression of overall u. S. Culture. Of course, in hollywood, there are some underlying deep things in hollywood, macho, which could be treated as cinematic art. In the political culture, its considered normal. By the way, not here. Its not considered normal here. Julia, largely speaking, what is he playing in the runup to the summit . Well, of course, hes, lets say, not being quite accurate when he says machismo is not part of the culture in russia. Think of some of the topless photos weve seen of the russian president , and you know hes not being quite forthright. As to your larger question, hes trying to show hes both the victim and only calm adult in the room, kind of watching with calm Bee Musement this american circus while we chase around tails and snipe at each other, and hes just saying, you know, a, this is what democracy looks like, are you sure you want this, to both his own people and to people Around The World, and hes also saying hes above it all, and hes not only bidens equal but his superior because of what he thinks is a position of strength going into this meeting. Watching it very closely. It would be interesting to see not tonal summit but what leads up to it as well. The Trump Administrations aggressive search for leaks turned its focus inside the White House. Details on the secret subpoenas for former White House Don Mcgahn and his wife. And there are reports of a possible leak at a chinese facility being called an imminent radiological threat. Well have cnns exclusive reporting. And enfwlanld is set to announce a significant delay in its reopening plan as the Coronavirus Variants spread quickly. What does that mean for the United States . ListerineĀ® cleans virtually 100 . New reporting this morning on the Sprawling Dragnet by the Trump Justice Department and its effort to obtain information from at least two members of congress and a journalist here at cnn. We now learn a member of former President Trumps staff Don Mcgahn and his wife were also sought. Whitney wild joins us. The scope is getting bigger and bigger. The slow drip of these details started to come out when The New York Times noted their records were being swept up, the washington post, cnn, and its extended into the White House, raising new questions this morning about who was directly behind these Leak Investigations and why. Former President Trumps Justice Department under fire again after new reports reveal another secret subpoena, this time for information about former white House Counsel Don Mcgahn and his wife. A source familiar with the matter telling Cnn Mcgahn was informed by apple last month that doj sought records in 2018 while he was still serving as the top lawyer inside the trump White House. The subpoena was under a nondisclosure order that was only lifted in may, indicating the department went to a judge to have it renewed multiple times since 2018. This comes a week after two house democrats confirmed that doj also sought the records of some members of the house intelligence committee, their staff, and families. Its astonishing that Donald Trump was not only attacking Adam Schiff with whom he had a vendetta, but he was going after his own lawyer. So the personal ability of Donald Trump to have loyalty to no one is on display here. Reporter while there is no indication that the pursuit of mcgahns data was politically motivated, the order came just weeks after trump was reportedly unhappy with mcgahn. Trump was allegedly onto mcgahn to cover up a firing. The source says it did not come from muellers team. In early june he finally provided Closed Door testimony to the House Judiciary Committee about the Russia Investigation which concluded a twoyear Court Bat wrl the Trump Administration fought to squash the committee subpoena. John bolton, who has Butted Heads with the former president , says hess prepared to believe the worst. I havent gotten any calls from apple yet, so well wait and see. I im prepared to hear the worst, that trump used the Justice Department for his own political needs. We need to get to the bottom of it. Reporter another source tells cnn that Jeff Sessions and Rod Rosenstein had no knowledge of the subpoena for mcgahns data from apple. The speaker of the house finds that hard to believe. This is about undermining the rule of law, and if these attorneys general, or sessions, to say they didnt know anything about it is beyond belief. So we will have to have them come under oath to tell about that. Well, this news over the weekend preseeding planned meeting between cnn, the washington post, and merrick garland. The goal there, john, is to try to convince doj to not just do a Memo Change but actually do a Policy Change that would give more freedom of the Press Tampdown on things like this. The Big Question now, john, is whos next. Thats a fair question. How much wider does this go in that Meeting Today with maerric gar garland. Very important indeed. Live pictures on the side of your screen of President Biden arriving shortly at Nato Headquarters in brussels. Lets go right to cnns Jeff Zeleny whos there. Jeff, what are we expecting . Reporter well,we are expecting President Biden to begin his first Nato Summit as president here momentarily. Hell be meeting with several leaders before. And, of course, the Family Photo we see at every one of these gatherings that show the Camaraderie And Dynamic of the partnerships. Well see that. But President Biden is trying to carry through his message that hes been talking about. The Transatlantic Alliance is back, but it resonates at nato. This is a place where former president Donald Trump in his first term in office came here and poked his finger in the eye of nato. The next year he threatened to withdraw from the military alliance. President biden continuing his Pledge And Pitch that america is back and talking about the stronger alines. But there are some key items on the agenda when some 30 leaders sit down. They actually have five minutes each to speak because there are so many of them, and its an a threehour summit. Theyre going to be talking about russia, china. All of this is the continuing message, the aggression of russia, the rise of china. Theyll be working on an update. The last time they did it was 2010. At that time russia was mentioned as a partner. China wasnt mentioned at all. All of these leaders will be working toward a development of that. Certainly President Biden continuing his trip across europe. He said when he was leaving england yesterday evening, he said he does not view nato as a protection racket, of course, making a direct comment to a former president Donald Trump who really angered a lot of allies here by saying they dont contribute enough to this. But that is a concern, how much money their Defense Spending is. All of those items on the agenda as we see President Biden making his way for a big part of the week, of course, his Summit Ending on wednesday. Youre talking about the Family Photo. It is ceremonial, but it could be complicated as we saw when President Trump sometimes seemed to be vying for a more prominent position. It was anything but congenial. I expect we plan to see something different with President Biden. Reporter right. No question about it. Certainly as we saw in the last couple of days when he was meeting with a group of leaders, no. It was described as a breath of Fresh Air by british prime Minister Boris Johnson and On And on. There is certainly a change in leadership. I will say President Bidens decision to withdraw troops from afghan by september has been controversial because it was so quick. He has an urgency to speak with the leaders and confront them. When he says america is back, is he able to prove that . Actually last evening he said he believes america is making some progress, trying to reassert themselves on the World Stage, but noted it is still a work in progress. Certainly an interesting day here. Hell also be meeting with several leaders individually burke, again, the White House behind the scenes, i can tell you, theyre working toward that summit with Vladimir Putin on wednesday. Its a longup to his arrival. This is not his arrival. Were waiting to see President Biden arrive. It will be on screen in a short time. Meantime, lets go to brianna. Theres a new Opinion Piece and it argues that former President Trump must be prosecuted for crimes committed while in office as a deterrent to future President S abusing their authority. The board writes, quote, a Commander In Chief tried his very best to subvert democracy. He attacked his own country. Five people died. Allowing him to go unpunished would set a far more dangerous precedent than having trump stand trial. Joining us is an Opinion Writer and Editorial Board Member for the boston globe. Thanks so much for being with us this morning. Thanks so much for inviting me. One of the big points of this its part of a series, right . A series you have done about futureproofing the presidency, and this one deals with a case to prosecute President Trump. And one of the points that you make is going after him on financial crimes isnt enough, that he needs to be accountable for what he did as president. Explain that. Well, so, this was an incredibly you know, its not necessarily, you know, a statement that we make lightly as an editorial board. We had to reckon with, you know, over two centuries of tradition of not prosecuting former President S for crimes theyve committed in office or abusing power, no matter how crooked they are. No matter how crooked former President S have been, none before the 45th really tried to instigate a coup. Donald trump was different and so our reaction to him must be different. We need to create a deterrent so future President S Holding Office will understand very clearly breaking the law in the Oval Office will actually be punished. Thats the reason we cant let Donald Trump get away with everything he did, because if we let his presidency linger over us without any closure, we have to ask ourselves what message we seermding to future Office Holders in office. Republicans want to move on, but there are people who are not supporters of Donald Trump who worry if your prosecute a former president , its going to set off this pattern of retaliation, of looking to the last president and making them pay not just politically but, you know, making it punitive. In your article you make the point that outside of the u. S. , holding a president accountable for his actions in congress, its not unusual you. Write, filing charges against former leaders is not a radical step either. Were going to pause for a moment and let President Biden speaking In Geneva. I wish you were not leaving. I really mean it. Youve been absolutely incredible, strong, able to pull people together, and i think there is a growing recognition over the last couple of years that we have new challenges, and we have russia that is not acting in a way that is consistent with what we had hoped as well as china. I must say that we had a number of our colleagues in the g7 who have stepped up as well in terms of the need for there to be greater coordination than we have now. But i want to make it clear. Nato is critically important for u. S. Interest in and of itself. If there werent one, wed have to invent one. It allows america to conduct its business Around The World in a way that never would have occurred. Number one. Number two, i believe, and ive said this my whole career and the four years i was out and decided to run for president again, nato is article 5, we take as a sacred obligation, and i constantly remind americans that when america was attacked on its shores for the first time since it happened in the beginning of World War ii, nato stepped up. Nato stepped up and honored article 5. I want all of europe to know United States is there. United states is there. We are pleased. Back a while ago, a decision was made for more spending. Youre right. More than ten countries have met the goal, and others are on the way. And so its important. But its i just want to thank you for your leadership. This wouldnt happen without you. Thanks so much. I mean it. Thank you. All right. President biden there . Brussels, belgium, meeting with the head of nato, and reinforcing that the United States is committed to nato, is committed to nato countries, and broadly the message that the United States is reengaging with the world. Were going to be tracking this. And Jeff Zeleny is there . Brussels watching whats happening. Its very clear what the message is from the president as he heads for this Nato Summit. Reporter brianna, it absolutely is. Weve heard President Biden talk specifically about article 5. That is, of course, the collective defense, really mission statement, and an attack on one is an attack on all. Of course, he talked about 9 11. And we heard him mention the importance and commitment to article 5 on every day of his stop throughout europe. This, of course, is in stark contrast to President Trump who really said he didnt think that was important or necessary or timely anymore. But now the Leaders Today will be talking about article 5 in a newer light with cyber attacks, being able to talk about that. Really hes using a softer tone how members of countries in nato have to contribute more on the gdp and Defense Spending. Thats the importance of the alliance, to have a military alliance, to help with redness issues. Its similar to what Barack Obama said. Pay more. He attempted to pull out because members werent paying their dues. A different posture entirely even though the Sub Text is the same. Yore Mi Oren Liebermann joins us from the streets. Reporter an absolutely major change in israeli politics. From one perspective, its simply a change of government in a democracy. But, of course, this is so much more than that. After over 4,400 days in office, Benjamin Netanyahu has been ousted by his former chief of staff, Naftali Bennett being sworn in Last Night. What difference does it make . Youre already seeing it happening. A congratulatory message from president joe biden, the secretary of state, and then the first Phone Call between biden and bennett. Meanwhile it took more than a month after Bidens Inauguration to call Benjamin Netanyahu. You already see the difference there. Certainly the u. S. Sees it and the eu will see it as well. Nevertheless, Benjamin Netanyahu lashing out at his rivals, promising not go quietly. Translator you call yourself the leaders of democracy. Well be back soon. Well be back. Reporter bennett now leads the most diverse coalition in israel, eight different parties, right wing, left wing, and the first Arab Party to be part of the government. Its not yet at a Crisis Level burkes what is happening there . Lets check in with cnns david culver. Tell us whats happened. This french company which part owns and part operates this nuclear Power Plant in china reached out to the u. S. Government with some concerns. In one of those letters, a letter to the Department Of Energy obtained by my colleague zack cohen, this company warned of an imminent Rage Lorj Cal threat. The indians raised concerns the chinese were raising the limits of the actual Radiation Detection so they didnt have to shut down this Power Plant. Of course, this raised some concerns in the u. S. Government. One source tells us this is not a crisislevel situation, and folks at the state department, Department Of Energy, tell us if there were a risk to the chinese public, they would have had to make this information public, but this did cause some concern. In the u. S. Government there were meetings at the national Security Council about it, and our understanding is they reached out because they wanted a waiver from the u. S. Government so they could provide u. S. Technical assistance in order to resolve this problem. Now, framaton, this french company were talking about, they told us over the past few days they were resolving at a plant, it was operating within safety parameters, and then today they gave us an updated statement describing environmental conditions at the plant and the surrounding areas as normal. But they also said there was a successful overhaul in recent days. They didnt give us a description as to why they had to carry out that overhaul. Brianna . David, obviously a lot of information coming from sources that are not coming from china. What is china saying here . Most of the information is coming outside of china, which is not surprising. The most frustrating in dealing with china is lack of trans transparency. We put in a request for the chinese ministries. Weve not heard back. We did see Last Night local time on their website there was a statement that reiterated what kylie said about operating within safety parameters. The real issue, what are the safety parameters, and are they going up so as to accommodate the beyond yags of the Plant And Push past any Skepticism And Concern that its malfunctioning. That remains to be known. Australias Baseball Team is kissing its hopes for olympic gold goodbye. The team pulled out of all Kwie Finers for the Game Set to start next month citing concerns for covid. Joining us now is glen williams, chief executive of Baseball Operations in australia. Im so sorry. Tell us what went into the factors for disqualifying from the olympics. Yes. Thanks, brianna. It was quite a challenge for us it. Was scheduled for taiwan from the 16th of june, and with the country being locked down, the game got shifted to mexico and the dates as well. Weve currently got closed borders here in australia as well. We had permission for the players to be able to leave and get a group of people to mexico on short notice being an issue, but with passenger cuts, the challenge of getting a group of 35 people back to australia, transitioning through the u. S. And back into australia in time to be able to get our olympic qualification or olympic planning done and make the journey to tokyo was quite challenging. So quite challenging in as you couldnt do it . This was really just a Logistics Issue . Yes. Logistically it was difficult and the whatifs if someone had fallen ill in Mention Colorado or the u. S. On the way back. To try to plan for the group in their transit and look beyond their Health And Safety was quite concerning for us logistically. And the timing and the like with attending this event and going to tokyo was essentially cut short on the flight back to australia, the requirements to come back in, and at the time it just didnt match up for us. I know this must be incredibly frustrated, glepnn, for you. As you look at this experience you have as part of the overall experience of how the olympics are being handled, given the nature of the pandemic, how do you assess how theyve been handled . Look, from our perspective here in australia, i think the Australian Olympic Committee has done an amazing job. Theres a lot of planning that goes into the olympic games in the best of times, but with the covid situation at the moment, theres a lot of complexity in terms of the Planning Event and events to take place. We were one of the sports that was affected. So from our personal perspective, its been quite challenging. Our Athletic Group has been working throughout a significant amount of time. Were obviously really disappointed that we might be there. But, yeah, its quite challenging to be able to coordinate. From our perspective, the national federation was faced with challenges in terms of putting the Qualification Events on. Disappointing from our end from Baseballs Perspective and working with the Australian Olympic Committee, theyve been fantastic in terms of coordinating our team and preparing our team in the event we qualified. Its incredibly disappointing. For that, were so sorry, glenn, but we certainly appreciate you joining us from sydney this morning this evening, thank you. Thank you, byebye. News for the highly selective this morning. The 145th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show t top honor went to wasabi, a pekingese. There he is, the best dog in the world, according to the Westminster Kennel Club. Now, wasabi seems like a nice small dog, very small. Somewhere underneath the hair is a warm bubbly charm and smile. Who can says for sheer. The Breeder And Owner says wasabi has showmanship, he has that little extra something, that sparkle that sets a dog apart. Showmanship and sparkle. Thats nice. You know what else is nice . Legs. Where are wasabis . Again, the sish not with wasabi who seems nice, small. But this is the fifth time a pekingese has won. Is this what we want to celebrate in america . I dont mean to single out the pekingese. Scott Scottish Terriers have won eight times. 12 states have joined the uniOn And there have been 27 men elected president. 12 state, 27 President S. Do you know how many labs or Golden Retrievers have won . Zero. Zero. How is that even possible . What disqualifies them besides their excessability besides their overall Dogginess And Lack of legs. No labs or Golden Retrievers. And what might be the biggest outrage of all. Mutts. So nice, so essentially democratic. Whats more american than a mutt . They cant even enter. Just think about that. They dont have the right breeding . What kind of message does that send . Its 2021. Now, i know this opinion is upsetting to people. How do i know . Because last year when i stated my concerns, i received a sternly worded open letter from the people behind National Purebred Dog Day, which is a thing. National purebred Dog Day. They apparently need their own day because an exclusive Dog Show that gets all the attentiOn And bans mutts isnt enough. But the leaders of National Purebred Dog Day wrote me, quote, as an alleged reporter who has covered stories from iraq to lebanon, youre presumed to have an insatiable desire to learn truths and report factses, but your appalling coverage of the westminster Dog Show smacks of an opinion rooted in ignorance. Thats what they wrote me because i stood up for mutts, the people from National Purebred Dog Day. Well, if love of an adorable personal companions is wrong, i dont want to be right, not now nor for another 145 Dog Shows. So congratulations, wasabi. Enjoy your win. Walk into glory, if you can. I understand that you are opposed to the exclusivity of this, berman, but i also wonder if you arent a little intellectually inconsistent. I look at you. I see someone who has that sparkle as you put it. You have very nice hair. And i will also say that i know you have legs under there, bulky not see them right now. But you havent met my parents. I dont have breeding. I promise you that. Like i couldnt get within 100 miles of a purebred show for anything. Mutts are the nicest. I know. And what about goldens and labs that and theyre so happy. Theyre The Ones you gravitate toward. Where are they in the show . I will tell you the outrage from last year when i said
