Right now in orlando, florida, a community gathers outside the Pulse Nightclub to remember the 49 people murdered and the more than 50 others wounded on this date five years ago. At the same time, people in several american communities are dealing with the shock of deadly shootings just within the past day. The biggest is in austin, texas. Tonight we learn that an arrest has been made in a shooting that left 14 people hurt. A short time ago i spoke to austins mayor, and he worries about today and what the future will bring. Our Texas Legislature just met and passed a new law that lets anyone carry a gun without any kind of registration or otherwise, and you know, i just do not believe that more guns with more people is the answer to curbing this violence. Ed lavandera is in austin. The investigation is far from over. It isnt over but it is moving along as the mayor in austin confirming to cnn that one of the two suspects that police are after this afternoon has been taken into custody and the mayor has gone on to say that they are closing in on the second suspect. But this is the scene in the Back Drop where the shooting took place Last Night. This is sixth street, the iconic Entertainment District in Downtown Austin, texas. This weekend happens to be a massive biker rally. So this is a situation called the republican biker rally. Thousands gathered here in Downtown Austin this weekend. Austin Police Say that this shooting erupted between two people and it appears to be an isolated incident that none of the people that were wounded, 14 in all, did not appear to be targets of the gunman in this situation. The mayor also said that there appears to have been some bad blood between these two suspects. What we know now is that Austin Police have arrested one of the suspects and according to the mayor here in austin, theyre closing in on the second suspect. Investigators have been going through the area looking for surveillance video. It was a chaotic scene Last Night when the gunfire erupted. But theyve been using Officer Body Cam Footage And Video from other establishments around here to try to track down and pinpoint who exactly the gunmen were in this situation. An extremely terrifying situation as the gunfire erupts in the early morning hours, leaving 14 people wounded. No one was killed. Pamela . Fortunately, No One was killed. But skill 14 people wounded. Seven more including a baby were wounded in a late night shooting. Police say right now, they cant find any witnesses who will share any information. Joining me now, the mayor of savannah, georgia. Well, thank you for having me on. Im sorry it is under these circumstances. Thats the 64,000 question. Were trying to figure out why people wont reach out to us and cooperate in this investigation. This is the second time this particular location was targeted. They didnt provide any information the first time it was targeted and theyre still very hesitant about providing information this time, even though one of the shooting victims is an 18monthold victim. So mayor johnson, you look at this. Law enforcement experts say the country is experiencing a spike in violent crime not seen in a decade. How concerned are you heading into this summer . And how are you preparing . Were actually very concerned. Our thoughts are going with our friends in Austin In Dallas and chicago. This has been happening across the country and now it is at our front door. It shows it is not limited to savannah. This is a national issue that will require a national response. The fact is, well find these individuals. We need the publics help to help us do it. Public safety is as good as public response. What do you think is behind the spike in violent crime and how do you turn the situation around . Well, specifically hook at our violent crime in savannah, we believe it revolves around four areas. Like Last Night, confrontations and altercations being resolved by use of a weapon. The second is drug sales and purchases, the third is gangrelated incidents, and the fourth is individuals currently awaiting trail for various offenses and who are now victims of retaliation or retaliating against witnesses. So what do you do . As we head into the summer and were already seeing the spike in Gun Violence, experts say it will only increase over the summer. When do you do about it . Were looking at it like a threelegged stool. Looking at the root causes of crime in our community, poverty, blight, education, employment, mentoring reentry, intervention programs, the second leg of the Stool Relational policing which were working on right now to strengthen our community. The third leg is enforcement. Working with our local state and federal partners to address violent offenders and to seek swift and strong prosecution of these cases. You may have heard Mayor Adler in austin tell me he thinks that more guns could be making this issue worse. What do you think . Well, absolutely. The reality is in georgia, we cant be mad that guns are everywhere when Georgia Law allows guns to be everywhere. We also realize that guns are inanimate objects. So not only that strong of Gun Laws In Georgia and nationally but what we need to have is to teach our young people better decision making. When i was growing up, you had an issue with somebody or a beef with somebody, you resolved it with fists. At least that way the next day, you were able to be Friends Again and life went on. Now it is done in a deadly way and you cant pull a bullet back. Families are victimized and it tears at the fabric of our community. All right. I spoke to the owner of the Pulse Nightclub who is now the ceo of one pulse foundation, about the fact that we woke up this morning to the news of more Mass Shootings, including the shootings that happened in the cities in austin, savannah, mayors you just spoke to on this program. She bemoenld the fact that Gun Violence is just getting worse. Here are her thoughts on why thats happening. There is a Gun Violence problem. There is a hate problem. That created quite a stir amongst everyone around us who became very tense. The flight was diverted to Oklahoma City and the suspect is in fbi custody. No charges have yet been filed. A secret Trump Doj Probe that looked at two house democrats, their staffers and even their family has Alarm Bells ringing in washington tonight. Heres what we know. Under president trump, the Justice Department seized data from dozens of accounts connected to democrats on the house Intelligence Committee. We know Intel Chairman Schiff and swalwell were notified their data was seized and we know Deputy Attorney general Rod Rosenstein and trumps Attorney General bill barr, Jeff Sessions as well, the former Attorney General, had told people that theyre not aware of this. They denied that they knew the lawmakers were part of the dragnet. Democratic congressman Mike Quigley joins me now. Nice to see you. First, can you update us with any new information . Have you learned anything else from Apple Or Doj . I think it will take a little while with apple. I know the Committee Staff is asking for clarification if Anyone Else was targeted from the Committee Or Anyone else in congress. So much else will flow pretty quickly given the circumstances. I Cant Help but respond to the Attorney Generals forgetting this. There is no way in the World Something like this can happen without the Attorney General being involved or at least notified. It defies belief that they would try to convince us otherwise and they would somehow forget that there was a subpoena on congress . It just goes to further assault what is left of their integrity. What would concern you more if they did know of it, they were aware of it or it happened under their watch and they didnt know about it . Thats a really good question. It gets to a larger issue that im very concerned about. Rogue actors within the Justice Department but who knows where else . If anyone thinks this is an isolated incident, Theyve Forgotten Issues like mr. Barr interceding on sentencing cases and the president pressuring them on who to target. If they have these things going on in justice, what else are they doing with the rest united States Government including the Intelligence Committee . Its anner i cant of concern. To be clear, there is a lot we dont know but apparently this request was made in 2018 before barr came to the Justice Department. The New York Times is reporting that he didnt revive the investigation and brought in an outside prosecutor. Yesterday you told cnn, i assumed a hostile government would do something like this. I just didnt think it would be our own hostile government. We still have a lot more to learn. If this was a case where doj was investigating someone else, say, someone on a congressional committee, a staffer, a lower level staffer, and ensnared the congressman, does that assuage your concerns at all . Look. Youre right. We dont know enough about what happened here or what happened elsewhere. But obviously, this was a broad fishing expedition. One could easily take what took place here as an effort to silence or punish those, two of the harshest critics in congress. So i think thats the concern. Theres a clause in the constitution that protects the speech of the members of congress, so this is an assault on the separation of powers in our country. I want to circle back to what i asked you about at the beginning. Dmpl oj. Has doj been forthcoming . And are you disappointed that you learned of this, im assuming, when the times report on it . That you learned about it from doj coming forward . Well, i think it is time for the department of justice to come forward and brief all of congress on everything they know. It is a good first step. That takes some time and who knows what their scope is. It is up to coming to get a full picture of what we know right now. I get that we need the Inspector General as well. I think the Attorney General has to recognize, this isnt an isolated incident. This is a systemic abuse of power as weve described before. He has to get a handle on that. Because what appears to be the case is that there are aspects of the doj that have moral, ethical, and legal serious issues. And i want to ask you again, as doj under merrick garland, has it been forthcoming cynic these revelations broke in the New York Times . They broke, what . Thursday night . Not yet. We come back into session monday. It is a good point. And do i believe the Attorney General should brief all of congress with all the details and all the information that he has at this point. I want to ask you really quick, to contrast this with senator grassley. He said investigations into members of staff are nothing new, especially for classified leaks. What do you say to that . Yeah. He knows better. The vast majority of leaks have always come out of White House. Just a wild coincidence that they targeted two of the most fierce critics. He knows exactly what this is. When it comes to subpoenas and members of congress, this is extremely rare. It is one thing if youre involved in a direct corruption probe. This is an entirely different manner. Remember the timing. This is in the middle of the russia investigation, the impeachment investigation. When you say really quickly coming out of White House, what evidence do you have for that . No. Its just an historical fact most leaks that take place in government come out of the executive branch. Its not that there are not any that come out of the congressional side but most come out of the White House.
