Good morning to our viewers here in the united states and all around the world. Its friday, june 11th. This morning, there are stunning new allegations of abuse of power by the trump White House. And the Trump Administration. Just how far did Donald Trump, Bill Barr, Jeff Sessions push the Justice Department To Go To Go after trumps perceived political enemies . New reporting this morning reveals, pretty far. Definitely. Prosecutors subpoenaed apple for Iphone Records of at least two House Intelligence Committee democrats, chairman Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell along with their Staff And Family members, including a child. The new york times first reported the story that prosecuted were hunting for leakers trying to find out who was behind media reports about contacts between trump associates and russia. According to the times, even after investigators thought they hit a Dead End and discussed closing the inquiry, Bill Barr told them keep digging. Thats one of the Big Red flags in all of this. Prosecutors also obtained a Gag Order. They renewed it three times before it expired this year so that Apple Couldnt Say Anything about this until now because this is from years past, right . Adam schiff and House Speaker Nancy pelosi are calling for an investigation into what pelosi is calling the weaponization of the doj by the trump White House. And this is just the latest evidence of trumps heavyhanded tactics in leak investigations. This is also the most alarming. Joining us now is a member of the House Intelligence Committee, Democrat Sean Patrick Maloney who is with us. First off, sir, can you react to what has happened here . Well, its extremely disturbing. And infuriating, in fact. You know, January 6th was out in the open. And we could all see it and look at the trouble were having getting to the bottom of that. But this is in the darkness. As the Washington Post says, democracy dies in darkness. This is the way most authoritarians around the world, whether youre talking about erdogan in Turkey Or Duterte in the philippines or Bin Salman in Saudi Arabia or xi in china, putin in russia. You accuse your opponents of national security threats or corruption and use the instruments of the Executive Branch to investigate people to drum up charges, to Launch Investigations where none is warranted. So there are serious questions about whether Theres Predication as lawyers would say. Was there a justification for this because there should be an extremely high bar for going after political opponents using the Justice Department. I mean, and here, where youre employing the services of an american company and you are going after members, staff, their children, finding nothing, by the way. It stinks. And it warrants a full investigation and heads should roll at the Justice Department and there should be consequences for people like Bill Barr, depending on what they did in terms of Barrs Association and other sanctions. Its one of the most serious things ive ever seen out of the Trump Administration, and thats saying a lot. That is saying a lot. This is were talking about metadata subpoenaed and obtained in the case of, i think, more than a dozen officials, according to The New York Times. So this would this would show w who, say, a member of congress might be talking to which could lead to seeking even more records. Do you have reason to believe that the Trump Doj sought your personal records . No, but i have a bunch of questions about this, including there seems to have been some electronic notification, an email from apple in may that members may or may not have received that may or may not have gone to Spam Filters. I mean, what the hell are we talking about . The idea that thats an adequate means of notifying members of congress on the Intelligence Committee that they may have been investigated for no reason by the Justice Department while they were doing oversight of this administration for impeachable offenses. That doesnt cut it. So right now, members of the Intelligence Committee are literally looking in their Spam Filters to see whether the Apple Corporation sent them an email. We have a bunch of questions this morning and need to get to the bottom of them. Is this how many members of the committee have discovered that they have been targets here, that they did go to their Spam Filter and find some notification . The answer to that question is, were talking to Each Other right now. Most of us learned about this from The New York Times Last Night. That alone is troubling. And then in addition, yes, its unclear most of us who may not have been on the committee at the time or not have any reason to think we were the target of this, you know, are unlikely to find this kind of notification. But the fact theres confusion about it is really troubling. It ought to be really clear, and there ought to be a very high bar. And it seems to me there should be a special procedure, an independent procedure for taking steps like this when going after congressional overseers on the basis of what appears to be very slim evidence while theyre doing oversight of the Executive Branch. As the speaker said, the weaponization of the Executive Branch. This is extremely serious. And i know theres a long list of serious things that were all concerned about, but in terms of threats to our democracy, if you let an executive do this sort of thing, there will be no end to it. You know its big if John King is here. Look, Sean Patrick Maloney said theres a long list of things, but this, this is chilling, john. Im just wondering, when i read this, i thought, i dont think ive ever seen anything like this. I was read this Last Night and thinking i was 9, 10 years old watching my father watch the news during watergate when he turned the Word Son of a bitch into one Syllable Learning what he was learning about richard nixon. This is a president we need to get all the facts here. Think about this and lift your head. What have we talked about in the last week . Rudy giuliani bullying a foreign government in the middle of a war with russia to do something. Weve learned that reporters emails have been gone after including Cnn Reporters emails. The president tried to bully the former president , secretaries of states and governors to change Election Results and now this. The question is the government has legitimate rights to protect its secrets and information. The government does not have the right to do what the president wants to get what the president wants. This seems like its not about america first or america great. Its about what does trump want and how do we use the levers of power to achieve that. Thats corrupt. They went after the records not only of elected officials, which is nuts. They went after the records of their family members, including a minor child. What does that tell you . That tells you that it is just off the rails. Theres no other word for it. Again, if you believe chairman schiff, somebody else legitimately leaked a secret, the government has a right to take certain steps. We all Sign Employment agreements. If you have access to sensitive information you Sign Employment agreements and understand youre subject to scrutiny. Theres a difference between legitimate Scrutiny And Abuse of power. And doing things, using the levers of government, especially this Justice Department, law and order, the levers of any government. Any levers of government but especially there on this To Go after people. Youre not supposed to do that. You can look at legitimate issues and then the challenge is, once you have it and this has to be done secretly because its so sensitive, then lay your case out in public. This seems like a gratuitous abuse of power to get vindication, to be vindictive against people the president at the time did not like p. A politicized, weaponized Justice Department. Thats the fear, right . Yes. And that is why you have seen again, if youre looking for Contt Biden as a candidate and as a young president in the young days of his presidency has said, i didnt know about that when weve learned things in the Justice Department. Hes tried to completely separate himself. I do think you just heard the congressman say they want to know more. I think theres a challenge. Theres legitimate frustration among some democrats that the new Attorney General, judge garland, Now General Garland is an institutionalist. A lot of career people in the Justice Department got caught up in it. They may have been following the boss orders back in the trump days but theres frustration among democrats now that the current Justice Department which had nothing to do with this, this is all done in the trump days, but that theyre not being fully transparent in helping root out what democrats believe were the abuses of Attorney General barr because they believe he was doing the bidding of his boss. This is very revealing about the weaknesses that were seeing in our government in our system of government. I think it raises questions about how much it is governed by norms, which in some ways is a strength of the american system, right . But here it is revealed as a weakness, as something that can be easily abused by an unscrupulous administration. I think that history, when we read history in 5, 10, 15, 20 years will read more about this. When Bill Barr was brought in, if Donald Trump went out, someone who served in the bush administration, someone more of a careerist, an institutionist, thats what everybody thought. Then they believed what happened there was an acceleration of an Attorney General who viewed himself as the president s lawyer. Who viewed himself as doing what the president wanted. Even if the president didnt directly ask for it. And you see sometimes in things the president said, the cues. I dont like Adam Schiff. If you work for trump and your goal is to please trump, theres your signal. You dont need a go after his meta data. Im going to get to infrastructure in a second. Since you brought up Bill Barr, lets play the exchange with Camera Harris and the Attorney General because its very revealing. Has the President Or Anyone at the White House ever asked or suggested that you open an investigation of anyone . Um, i wouldnt yes or no. Could you repeat that question . I will repeat it. Has the President Or Anyone at the White House ever asked or suggested that you open an investigation of anyone. Yes or no, please, sir. The President Or Anybody else seems youd remember something like that and be able to tell us. I dont know what more there is to say about this at that point. He was at that hearing. If she asked him, does friday come after thursday, he was not going to answer the question. He was there not to cooperate with the democrats. The answers he gives republicans versus the answers he gives democrats. Theres a simple answer there. No. If the answer is no. Or, i would never allow that because thats not my job and thats a deliberate play, ploy, call it what you will, by barr to essentially say youre a democrat. I dont have to answer your question. The government cannot work if thats the way based on what we know, this new reporting, it makes that all more suspect and alarming. Lets talk about roads, bridges and tunnels, happy things like that. Theres this bipartisan group of ten senators who struck a deal Last Night. We dont have a lot of details, but they say theyve got a compromise. What are the prospects that this becomes law at this point . Look, theres still a big question about how you pay for it. Thats where this has gone off the rails where they make progress on what to do or define infrastructure, how much do we want to spend. They make some progress and then, how do we pay for it . Lets also remember theres enormous pressure on the president from members of his own party to be bigger and bolder. Hes not going to be as big and as bold as he wants. He doesnt have the votes. Even if he cuts this package, it will be more modest. Hed like a bipartisan Signing Ceremony at the White House. He believes that would send an important signal to the country because of what we just talked about. Government off the rails. Government not operating in a normal way. People not seeing any productive adult behavior in the capital city. The president would like that. It makes a lot of sense. That does not mean that theyll not then immediately Move On to Bernie Sanders Writing A Big Democratic package and trying to get it through with just 50 votes, plus the Vice President and the senate. The president really wants really believes in the idea of something bipartisan. Even if the very next thing you do is a partisan fireworks show. He thinks its important. Well see if it can get there. Went out the window a long time. Its been unusual to see so many members of the president s own party saying his approach talking to republicans is foolish, not going to get you anywhere. The trump Justice Department seizing the Iphone Records from apple for key democratic members of the House Intelligence Committee, their aides and family members. Even a minor. This tops off just a stunning week of revelations about the Justice Department. Joining us now, cnn chief Justice Correspondent evan perez. Look, so much has gone on this week from one thing just this week. Explain it all to us. This week we learned a lot about all the things the Justice Department has been trying to reveal about what went on during the Trump Administration. And among, obviously, the latest revelations is that two congressmen, Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwells records were part of this dragnet that was taken by the Justice Department in 2018. Beginning in 2018. We also learned that Mark Meadows at one point at The End of the Trump Administration was pushing the Justice Department to investigate some of the crazier conspiracies, including one called italygate which youll have To Google because i cant even explain it. And we learned more about the Gag Order put on cnn during a monthslong legal battle over barbara Starrs Email records, and it was only at The End of that, that cnn learned, fighting them again over a period of months, that the Justice Department had also seized some of her private information, some of her private emails, data, some of her Phone Number data. It was extraordinary week at the Justice Department. It just runs the gamut. A series of revelations about what went on during the Trump Administration and the lingering effects even now. Talk about all the different targets were seeing here. Well, the commonality here is the president s perceived enemies list. Obviously, these are two of the congressmen who trump believed were targeting him, were helping spread the stories about Trump And Russia connections during the height of the mueller investigation. Of course, cnn, he said, was one of the enemies of the people along with the Washington Post and The New York Times. And, you know, this is what this tells you is what the atmosphere was at the Justice Department. As the president kept attacking Jeff Sessions who was the Attorney General at the time. Rob rosenstein was the deputy Attorney General who was running all the russia investigation stuff. And curiously, Last Night, sessions former Chief Of Staff noted that The New York Times who broke this story did not mention that sessions had anything to do with this, which raises the question, who approved this . This has To Go to the highest levels of the Justice Department. Sessions was recused from anything having to do with russia. He says he realized that hed been misled by trump a few days after the insurrection but says he now takes full responsibility for participating. His lawyer made headlines last month when he said anthony had been hooked on Fox News and developed foxitis. Joining me now is Anthony Antonio and his lawyer, joseph hurley. Anthony, thank you so much for being with us. Republicans have continuously downplayed the January 6th insurrection. Some question whether or not these trump supporters were tourists just taking a stroll through the capitol. They blocked the independent commission to investigate this, anthony. So whats your message to those republicans . So heres my message. Obviously, that day, what happened shouldnt have happened. I said it before. I said it on the show before. What happened that day should not have happened. I take, again, like youve said, i take full responsibility for my actions that day. My message to everyone, republicans, democrats, media outlets, everyone out there, american people, we need to stop being divided, right . This happened because we are so divided as a country that we need to come together and provide unity with Each Other. Show love. Provide unity. Come together as one and stop disagreeing. Were going to have disagreements. Were not going to agree on all aspects of everything. And thats one thing that i learned. You were there. I mean, you were in the middle of it. Did this feel and look like a normal Tourist Visit to you . I have so i never took a tour of the capital before. Ive never tooken a tour of a national building like that before. Where i was standing, no, i wasnt on tour. Where i was standing and what i was doing, i Cant Speak for accounts of other people and where they were at and all that kind of stuff but from where i was, no, it was not a tour. At moments i was trying to actually get people to stop going forward. I was speaking and saying, hey, stop moving forward. Stop pushing forward. Stay where you are. Even sit down so we can stop what was going on. And so, no, i where i was at and me, myself, i did not feel like i was on a tour. No, i mean, based on what ive seen in my life, cops dont get beat up on regular Tourist Visits. You certainly saw that happening, correct . So, yeah. So that thats one of the images that is probably engrained in my mind. And based on that and one thing that go ahead. Im just saying one thing that i want to say, if that officer is watching, i just want to apologize. I want to apologize because i didnt i just stood there. I didnt help. And so, yeah, i did see that. I think youre talking about officer Michael Fanone, d. C. Police officer Michael Fanone, who weve gotten to know over time here at cnn. I think we have video of the assault on Michael Fanone where he is suffering, frankly. And while this was going on, this is bodycam footage. Im not sure if youve seen this before. But youve recalled that as this was happening, you saw death in his eyes. What do you mean by that . I saw a man who needed to be helped. I saw a man that just wanted To Go home. Th the look in his eye. I Cant Recall what he saw or what he was going through physically and live that day, but i locked eyes with him. And in that moment, i felt a calling to help this man. This isnt right. You help this man. And if he sees this, i just want to apologize that i didnt help you when i know i should have. I just stood there. Yeah, he has kids, right . I dont know. Do i have kids . No, Michael Fanone has kids. This is oh. This is a man suffering, going through a lot. Your apology, i think, does mean something. Its not easy to apologize. Its not easy to admit that you could have done more and wish you had done more to stop it. But based on that memory, again, based on what you saw and based on what were still hearing today, do you think that republicans should stop trying to downplay this . I think we need to all accept actions for what we did. I was always taught, when you do wrong, acknowledge, hey, i did wrong. This is what i did. Im answering for what ive done. Consequences come, and then you learn from it and Move On, right . What im saying is, as a country, what we need to do is unify together, come together, learn from what happened and do better. Im not going to try to sit here and say we need to Move On and all of this. But as a country, we need to unify together, Show Love to one another. Both sides, right . Both sides of the Spectrum Need to say, look, we may not agree all the time. Obviously, what happened that day, nobody agreed what was going on. So you say you want to learn from it. Hang on one second here. You say you want to learn from it. Lets talk about you say everyone should learn from it. The person who was President Of The United States at the time, who i think inspired you to be there, is still telling people he won the election. So in your mind, has he learned from it . You know, im im not him. Im not going to put words in his mouth. Im not going to assume anything by him. If it was me, i would not i mean, i would accept the fact, right, that i lost the election. But again, im not him. But, i mean, obviously Joe Biden is president. But is he lying to you . He won the election. Is the president , former president , lying to you . If he lost the election, then he is lying. Counselor, joseph, what do you make of the fact that the former president is still out there saying this kind of thing . I have one question for clarification. John, do you prefer the Joe Look or Anderson Look . You are an attractive man, but youre here for your legal role in this. So again, let me ask you okay. The former president continues to be out there questioning the results of the past election. What impact does that have . I have read a lot about this, and i am an extremely passionate and i am biased, and interestingly, i am in a studio where i will call it trumpland. I look to my right, you see im really looking to the left or the opposite its the opposite. Everything is the opposite. Thats his world. Hes grown up like that. Thats who he is. Its all about me. Is it a lie to him . It doesnt matter. He doesnt think that way. There are four people now on the history of the 20th century that all belong in the same Group And History will look at them all. Mussolini, hitler, stalin, putin and trump. And that answers all questions. And thats where he would go if he can. And thats where he will go because i saw a Frightening Look Into The Future by reading as part of my research, by reading about the past. And its the same pattern over and over, destroy the free media. Destroy the institutions. They look to whatever it is, el trumpo, he is the man and he does everything and says everything. Thats all that son of a lives for. Did his statements make your job harder in defending your client . They dont make it harder. They make it easier because you see he wont Say Anything bad about anybody. You see him grasp with that. I mean, deep inside im sure if he let that loose what he thinks, but hes not made that way. I am made that way. It is a continuing thorn, and the disgusting part, he is what he is. A piece of whatever. Its the ones that follow him, the politicians in washington that take the money, that get the votes, that smile and all that and they go down there and they implicitly are in the effect of cracks of the foundation of democracy in america, all for number one. Anthony, let me ask you this. Do you think there should be an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate what happened . So i dont know enough to give you an educated answer about that. I dont know what that would entail. I dont know what that would involve. And all of that kind of stuff. So respectfully, im going to say, i dont know. Because i dont know what that would all entail. How did you end up there . And by that, i mean, you have taken ownership for your own decisions which is a respectable thing to do. But who were you influenced by . Was it the former president and his statements . Was it what you were watching on tv . Your lawyer, your attorney said you had foxitis. You were influenced by what you were watching on Fox News. How were you influenced by those sources . So i have never been to a trump rally. Ive never been to any political ral rally. Ive never really watched the news before all of this. So what got me to d. C. On January 6th is, whether it be on social media, whether it be on mainstream media, all over. January 6th, the President Of The United States called us to washington, d. C. , and i said, well, the President Of The United States who at the time he was still the President Of The United States, calls all of us to d. C. Lets go check it out. Lets go see why hes calling us to d. C. Lets say, okay. Lets go because he told us to and from what my understanding before it was going to be a super organized thing. My plans going there when i was first leading there was to hear the President Speak and then go straight to Freedom Plaza because there was another stage at Freedom Plaza where more organized events were going to be going on. And so thats what led me there. Whether it be social media, mainstream media, i mean, the it was all over the news. The president called you to d. C. On January 6th. As like i mean, and it was published as a scheduled event. You went because he asked you to . I went because he asked everybody to. Because the President Of The United States stood up there and said, come to d. C. And then every Media Source that i could possibly see credited it and said, yeah, this is what the president said. They even put up a map showing like this is where the stage is going to be. This is where you stand. I mean, everything about it looked official. When did you realize that he wasnt being straight with you . I would have to say i realized that maybe as you said, he wasnt being straight with me or that everything was wrong about the situation. When the violence erupted. When you could see noticeable violence. When you when i was in the middle of people getting beaten, people getting hurt. Officers just get ting i mea, officers just fighting with american people, right . Clashing back and forth. Its not supposed to happen. And when i saw that, i was like, something is not right. This should not be happening. So, again, if you were there because, as you say, he asked you to be there, for reasons that you now say were not right, to what extent should Donald Trump be held accountable . Im not a man of law. Im not an attorney. But in your own mind as a person, forget the law for a second here. In your own mind, how responsible is he for what happened . He called people to washington, d. C. , that day. He said march down to the capitol. I personally would not have marched down Pennsylvania Avenue and walked to the capitol on the grass of the capitol. I told you where i was supposed To Go. I was supposed To Go to Freedom Plaza. That was my plan from the g getgo. And if he didnt say go down to the capitol, i wouldnt have went down to the capitol. So if that answers your question. Again, like mr. Hurley said, im not going to talk bad about anybody. Everybody has their own day in court. Everybody has their own day in front of the maker. Well, you have your day in court im not the Guy To hang on. As of now, you yhave your day i court. He doesnt. Is that fair . Is that fair that you are being judged for answering his call, in your mind, but he isnt being held to account for his role . I answer it like ive answered everything. I take full responsibility for my actions. Its a yes or no. I will have my day in court. I have my day in court and do i think hes held responsible for this . I think he should be held responsible. Were all responsible for our own actions, and i do think he should be held responsible. You know, however a court of law or however, you know, people higher than me feel fit, then i trust them. Counselor . The same way that i trusted my president , the same way i trusted my president , i trust our legal system to do what they see fit when it comes to his actions that day. Joseph, counselor, what do you think of that . Should the former president be held to account for what happened . Are you asking me . Yes, i am, counselor. There aint No Doubt about it, and im sitting here just with anthony, why wont you just say yes or no. He is such a person that doesnt hurt people that hes he cant come out of himself to criticize. And thats the only reason i represented him because the rest of them are criminals, and they are where they should be and will be more joining them. So absolutely, 100 , but as all cowards do, weve got our bone spurs. Stay down in maralago, play a few rounds of golf. Let everyone else take the hit and the dummies take the hit. Thats whats totally inexplicable. They take the hit and keep following along until they get chopped down one by one, theres none left. Thank god whenever that ends. The cdc is reporting that routine vaccinations for children and adolescents dropped in the early months of the pandemic and never fully recovered. Gabrielle, tell us about this new campaign and how you got involved in it. I got involved when merck and vaccinate your family, the nonprofit group, reached out. We our values are aligned. We all care about the Health And Wellness of our families and just wanting to remind people to not skip your childrens well visits and doctorrecommended vaccines. Its a great importance to us. We just wanted to remind families, make contact with your doctors. School is going to be back in person in the fall. Summer travel. Camp. Theres an easy way to protect your families. And the first step is getting in contact with you and your childrens doctors and scheduling those well visits. Com for any other questions or concerns. I think, amy, this has been just a reality of parents who were worried about taking their kids into the doctors office. It definitely became a little more difficult, i realized, during the pandemic being the parent of two small children. I will admit i was remiss on a dentist appointment, right . I was remiss on some things i know a lot of people were. You want americans vaccinated, and not just against the coronavirus. What happens when americans are not staying up to date on their vaccines with their kids . Well, absolutely, i mean, people had reason to be concerned, but pediatricians and doctors really made major concessions to make sure their offices were safe. It happened to me. My child fell ill and i had to bring him in. I did feel comfortable. I had limited waiting Room Space and they really did make an effort. Now that the pandemic is partially behind us, we want kids to get back in because people come to vaccinate your family and tell us about these sad like complete tragedy of losing Loved Ones to vaccinepreventable diseases. Sadly, diseases, they dont have any boundaries, whether its a child, an infant or adult. They take any opportunity. And so when were missing millions of vaccines this year, its really an opportunity for tragedy to enter our homes again. Certainly. And gabrielle, your whole family is part of this effort, including your husband who some people might know, dwyane wade, nba legend. A slew of Legends Including nfl players who have come out. As you know, and youre watching this, theyre saying that they are hesitant about getting the covid19 vaccine. Lebron james, for instance, has declined to say whether or not hes gotten the shot, although theres a question of perhaps he did. What role do athletes have in educating and motivating the public here . I think athletes, as well as onair personalities, as well as anyone with a platform should really encourage everyone to talk to and listen to actual scientists and their own Health Care professional. Talk to your own doctor who has your health records, your health history, on hand so they can give the best recommendations for your family. Yeah, i think recently, you know, in the last, i dont know, five years, facts have been called into question, which is a little bizarre, but if theres any concerns, lean into science. Lean in to doctorrecommended vaccinations. And other than that, i just hope everyone is being responsible with their platforms, whether you are an athlete or an actress or just a youtuber with a large platform. When youre speaking, make sure that what youre saying is rooted in fact and in science. And lean into that. Remember, dont skip vaccines. Com. Certainly. Thank you. A surge in Gun Violence is troubling Police Chiefs in big cities. In chicago, Murder And Shooting violence are up over the last four years. It comes as the city removes most of its coronavirus restrictions today. Joining suing us is chicago mayi lightfoot. The coronavirus restrictions being lifted today. What does that mean for you and your city . Well, i think it means everything. With todays announcement, we will be the largest big city in the country to be fully open. And thats a big deal. And weve got the lowest unemployment rate. Our Consumer Spending tops every other city in the top 20. So were moving forward and our economy is really poised to come roaring back. Now as thats happening, there is a concern in chicago, as there is in many cities around the country about crime. And rising crime. If you look over the last four years, since 2017, murder is up 2 . Shooting violence up 10 . Why . Well, i think theres a number of factors, but one of the biggest is because we dont have common Sense Gun laws in this country. Im situated near indiana, some suburban areas. Literally if you have the money, you can buy Military Grade Weapons at any quantity and they end up back on the streets of chicago. Already this year, our Police Department has taken over 5,000 crime guns off the street. Well be poised to take 12,000 at this pace. And its because there are too many illegal guns. We have to have a federal common Sense Gun restrictions to make sure that people who are lawabiding residents can get guns but the bad guys cannot. And we have to have a federal strategy to deal with gun trafficking. Our local Police Departments are doing everything that they can. Literally risking life and limb. But as the supply keeps coming, unchecked, thats a problem for local Police Departments and, obviously, for our communities who just want peace and safety. Guns are one part of it. And you just addressed that right there. But theres clearly more as well. Particularly as weve seen as covid restrictions have been lifted in some places. We have seen incidents of shootings go up. So how can you, in the short term, while were waiting for the federal government and local governments to take action on guns, what can you do to reduce the amount of violence . Well, listen, obviously, were not sitting idly by and hoping on a prayer that the federal government is finally going to act. What were doing at the local level is using both hard power and soft power. Obviously, we still have to hold those people who are the most violent accountable and our Police Departments Homicide Clearance Rate is up to historic levels. 60 . Which is very, very good. When you think about three, four years ago, we were in the teens. Were making progress there. And when you make that kind of progress, youre breaking through to the community because they are trusting the police more and more. The other things that were doing this summer is concentrating on the 15 most violent areas. And flooding those areas with a lot of city services. Were focused using data. Who are the people on the ground in those areas . Are they children . Are they adults . What are their specific needs . So were taking a whole of Government Approach to these areas. And so far were actually seeing progress. I dont want to jinx it. Were certainly not doing a victory lap, but, for example, over memorial day weekend, we saw 80 drops in homicides, in shootings because of this very targeted Datadriven Approach and more to come. I want to ask you about a lawsuit that you are the target of and acknowledge youre talking to me this morning and i, by all accounts, am a white guy and were doing this interview together. On one day on the anniversary of your inauguration, you gave interviews to only reporters of color. And you are being now sued for that on the basis of discrimination. Your reaction . Well, the lawsuit is completely frivolous. I have used a more colorful term if we werent on tv. But heres the thing. Im the mayor of the third largest city in the country. Im an africanamerican woman, to state the obvious. Every day when i look out across my podium, i dont see people who look like me, but more to the point, i dont see people who reflect the Richness And Diversity of the city. So, yes, i started a long overdue conversation about diversity in newsrooms, in coverage. You all are the mirrors on society. You reflect with a critical and important lens the news of the day. You hold public officials like me accountable. You must be diverse. It cant be that in a city like chicago with all the talent that we have that we cant find diverse journalists of color. Of course we can. What they need is opportunity. And i hope my conversation has pricked the consciousness of the people who do the hiring decisions in Media Rooms all across the city and hopefully across the country. Weve got to do better.
