Its stunning it didnt look at two equally important parts here which is what led to how it was exacerbated that day but also what started it. Thats a little beyond the pale. And the degree to which we did not see that republican establishment say, hold on, time out. Thats not acceptable. Thats not who we are, but rather be kowed into accepting it and then finally culminating in Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/january-6th'>January 6th where what originally was, oh, dont worry. This isnt going anywhere. Were just letting trump and others vent. And then suddenly you now have large portions of an elected congress going along with the falsehood that there were problems with the election. And the leadership of the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/gop-briefly'>Gop Briefly for one night when they still had the sort of yes. Sense of fear in them. Yeah. Going against the president. And then poof. Suddenly everybody was back in line. Now, what that the reason for that is because the base believed it. And the base believed it because this had been told to them not just by the president but by the media that they watch and nobody stood up and said, stop. This is enough. This is not true. I wont say nobody. Let me correct it. There were some very brave people who did their jobs, like the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/secretary-of-state'>Secretary Of State in georgia, who was then viciously attacked for it. And all those congressmen said ill lose my job. Ill get voted out of office. Another way of saying this is i didnt expect there would be so few people who would say, well, i dont mind losing my office because this is too important. America is too important. Some things are more important than our democracy is too important. We didnt see that. Now, you know, im still the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/hope-and-change'>Hope And Change guy. And so my hope is that the tides will turn, but that does require each of us to understand that this experiment in democracy is not self executing. It doesnt happen just automatically. It happens because each successive generation says these values, these truths we hold self evident. This is important. Were going to investigate in it and sacrifice for it and well stand up for it, even when its not politically convenient. Its interesting. He says he thought there were guardrails and he placed faith in republicans. I think a lot of people connect with this but what has become clear about those beliefs is they are not based in fact. They are based in people wanting to believe them to be true and so thats why they think them. Well, its interesting, obama did not have a good relationship with republicans obviously when he was in office. In 2012 he said he hoped the fever would break now that he would be reelected and for him to say i did think there were some people left in this group who could step in and say, hey, this is crossing a line. Which is something we always heard from a lot of these republican lawmakers when Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/donald-trump'>Donald Trump was on the rise, when he actually got into office and his first two years in office was that, yes, this is bad but if it gets bad enough then well step in. And i think what obama accurately gets at there saying this is all a political calculation because for a brief moment there on Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/january-6th'>January 6th and Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/january-7th'>January 7th you saw where there were a lot of people in the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/white-house'>White House who were on the verge of resigning. Law makesers saying they were done with trump and were not standing by him. Mitch mcconnells comments. Then it all changed because of a political calculation and i think thats accurate. Politics Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/trump-truth'>Trump Truth and principle, right . These are about political incentives. We heard Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/liz-cheney'>Liz Cheney talk about republicans who say they feared for their lives. Fine. It is true. If you watch what happened on Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/january-6th'>January 6th you can reasonably worry about your safety. Thats why as part of the capitol Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/security-review'>Security Review theres talk about having security in their ohm districts. But ive spoken to republicans whose fear is not about their lyes but about their seat. I had an Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/army-veteran'>Army Veteran say i couldnt stand up to him because i would lose my seat. Thats the bear politics of this. Thats on display. As you said, there was a moment when they were willing to speak the truth, mccarthy, mcconnell and others but that moment passed. Well, look, obviously shame on those republicans who would not stand up when it was so obvious. But at what point should Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/barack-obama'>Barack Obama know better than to believe that they would do the right thing . He cant consistently and democrats i think there are some who will argue we cant consistently or continue to be surprised by this stuff. I see him bragging about it on television. So to me as a lawyer sounds like a bribe. Somebody in ukraine has to take that seriously. In the ukrainian president ial office they took it very seriously. Then theres now the country was fighting a desperate war against russianbacked rebels in its east and heavily depended on u. S. Weapons and Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/military-a'>Military A aid to hold its ground including millions of dollars frozen by the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/trump-administration'>Trump Administration while giuliani pursued these political investigations. Mindful of the need of a strong relationship with washington, the ukrainian president ial adviser on the call tried to assure giuliani investigations he wanted would be looked at. Let me remind you, were a country fighting an active war with russia for many years. So, anything to do with swapping, you know, favors within our bilateral relationship, in exchange for trying to get us involved into u. S. Domestic politics is just wrong on many levels, morally, ethically and probably legally. By calls end, ukrainian side seemed to understand what president zelensky was expected to do to keep washington on the side and on the call at least they agreed. They appear to be coming online. We dont think whether thats a hack. You aside from that have written a letter to the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/white-house'>White House and deeply involved with this and the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/intelligence-community'>Intelligence Community saying the administration we need to start doing more. The administration needs to do more on cyber security. What do you think needs to happen . Well a lot needs to happen, right . We need to be better about our cyber hygiene, use two Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/factor-authentication'>Factor Authentication and better defenses. The notion that companies like cnn or colonial Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/pipe-lien'>Pipe Lien doesnt need to tell the government when theyve been attacked is a crazy notion. But what my letter to the president focuses on, ive seen this for years. Ive seen it for years, we have not established any sort of deterrents on cyberattacks. There was the deportation of a bunch of russian diplomats in air quotes, closure of a facility and of course Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/vladimir-putin'>Vladimir Putin turned around and did it again and again and again. And what we need to do, we need to extract a significant cost from those who do this. The fbi recovered some of the ransom in connection to the colonial pipe looimpb. They need to know if they attack our infrastructure, theyll get that back proportionally. How we do that is classified. We need to start emptying Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/peoples-bank'>Peoples Bank accounts and setting up a deterrent. We have never effectively done that. Its time for that to change.
