Guatemalan president. Her trip billed by the administration as an opportunity to deepen the u. S. Partnership with latin america and grow the stem of flow of migrants from the Central American countries. Harris is facing what really is the first major Diplomatic Mission of her vice presidency. It is a Core Issue to the surge at the southern border. Lets begin this hour with our white House Correspondent who is traveling with her. He is in guatemala city. First foreign trip, you saw the Pomp And Circumstance she was welcomed with. But this is a key issue that administrations prior to this have not been able to successfully tackle despite a lot of money being poured into the issue. Yeah. Thats exactly right. The Vice President is here looking for new solutions, looking to build out this strategy that she has been trying to lay the groundwork for in the weeks before coming here. You know, in talking with the Vice President s top officials, they say that they feel like the Vice President harris is picking up where then Vice President biden left off when he had this portfolio of addressing the Root Cause this but this had is a big diplomatic test for the Vice President. The Vice President that came into office with very little foreign Policy Experience and looking to burnish the credentials. Thats where her focus will be during this trip. Not only on addressing the Root Causes but seeing what she can do diplomatically here to also bolster and buttress her resume going forward. Now there will be a series of intractable issues that the Vice President is trying to address here from Poverty And Hunger to the Climate Crisis as well as corruption issues. And on that last point that, is where the delegate diplomatic dance will take place between Vice President harris and guatemalan president. The Vice President harris visit here comes on the heels of a series of efforts by the guatemalan government to roll back some of these anticorruption measures in this country including some legal challenges to a special Prosecutors Office that is tackling corruption in guatemala. So that will be a point of convention. Make no mistake, Vice President Harris Viadvisers Say She Wille tackling those Issues Head on. She is meeting with the president about the issues and the the other Root Causes of mi graduation, but she will also in the afternoon be meeting with civil society leaders as well to make clear that theyre not the only game in town here as it relates to trying to address some of the systemic issues in this country and in the northern triangle at large. Joining me now, gonzalez, a democrat who represents a portion of texas. Also sits on the foreign Affairs Committee as part of the problem solvers caucus. Thank you for taking the time this morning. Thank you for having me. Part of the motivation for this trip is for the u. S. To help these Central American countries address some of the big issues that help feed the surge in migrants and heading north among them climate change. Effect on the agriculture. The economy, crime, corruption, violence, so on n your view k. The u. S. Credibly and substantially help these countries address those problems or is the surge were seeing along the boarder primarily a Boarder Security Issue . There are economic issues and i think what the Vice President is trying to do is address in a wholistic approach and surgical approach in how we invest resources to create conditions for people to want to stay in the native country. This has been on going. But were going to make surgical investments that are result driven. And with time bars to test it. We had a meeting a few weeks ago and she has a very good plan to get to the Root Causes which will be the only way to ultimately curb the mass migration. The border arizona, Mexico Border with border patrol, my team and i did a couple weeks ago. Agents told us there that migrants coming up coming up from central america and the new administration has a more welcoming policy. Do you believe the administration unwittingly fed that impression by the changes they made . Well, i think it was an Unintended Consequence which Donald Trump left the world just felt we had a kinder, gentler america including Central American migrants that made this trek to the border. Also, we have the Cartel Element that is down there marketing for the folks to come up. Were very aggressively trying to communicate to the administration and others on Capitol Hill. I believe we should have a massive asylum seeking Center On Mexico and Guatemalas Border where people can seek asylum there. If they dont, we deal with it at that point and try to help and address them at tjuncture where cartels enriched themselves to the value of 1. 3 billion just by The End of march is what we calculated. An average of 6,000 a head. So its something that is a very serious question that needs to be addressed. A lot of people pay a lot of money as you no he to do that you have been critical though of some proposed steps in response to this. Critical, for instance, progressives to follow to the abolishment of ice as a service. Tell us what you believe needs to happen today to address the surge on the border. What would work in your view. Clearly we need to create more jobs and better paying jobs in these countries. We need to uplift the people that are mostly migrating. They create jobs and security that, you know, invest in Agriculture Products and manufacturing and tourism. Its almost zero migration. We can invest more in the manufacturing area. I believe we should be advocating to bring american manufacturing that is happening in China And Southeast asia that will never come back to america, bring it to those countries that are closer to our neighborhood, that create jobs and slow this Mu Gra Migrant surge and help our entire hemisphere. A lot of the solutions have been around a long time, frankly. And have been posed by democrats and republicans for it seems years, okay . And yet, it runs into obstacles, ditches, kacasms in congress. This is on bidens list. There is some communication back and forth between the parties. Youre part of the problem solvers caucus. It is doa . Could a Reform Bill make it through the way it is today . I certainly hope so. You notice, all the migrants that come to our border get absorbed by our economy because we clearly have a Labor Shortage in this country that needs to be addressed with Guest Worker programs, other ways of bringing them in legally and orderly, not in the way that is happening now. So i think that needs to be part of the solution is to create Labor Programs for people to come on nine month rotations, kind of like what canada is doing and create conditions where we know who they are, what theyre doing. We get to vet them in their home country. They apply for this in their home country. Theyre able to get in the plane and fly in and do the work and go home at the right time. And in time be able to apply for permanent legal Status Or Citizenship down the road once we know who they are, theyre credible, they proven themselves. There is great ideas that we can do and that havent been done before. I certainly hope that this visit is beginning of many great things to happen. I feel fully confident that Vice President is on the right track. Well see. I did hear a lot about our Guest Worker program do you remember at the border as well. Congresswoman cheney is once again criticizing not only former President Trump for his actions ahead of the Capitol Insurrection calling them the most dangerous thing a president has ever done. Also, jim, Kevin Mccarthy. Shes been consistent. She did hold the president responsible in the days after January 6th. He changed his tune, cheney did not. Shots by Kevin Mccarthy who pushed her out or helped push her out from gop leadership. How else did she take aim . They is very critical the way she went to Mara Lag Yoe and in the aftermath of inciting the January 6th insurrection and made clear in Kevin Mccarthys view, the republican party was with Donald Trump. And she, Liz Cheney, steered clear of Criticizing Mccarthy until the push to oust her from the Number One position. Because her speaking out with Donald Trump and criticizing the lie that he won the election. And now she is unsparing in her criticism of mccarthy and that trip down to mara largo. There was no question who was responsible then. But then, of course, Kevin Mccarthy decided to go to Mara L Largo at The End of january. That is a real moment it became clear we were not going to be able to move forward and focus on substance and policy. Maralago. When he leaders embracing the president who had just been impeached. She also told our colleague as part of the acts files podcast that when after Donald Trumps language saying his language in saying that democracy doesnt work is similar to the chinese communist party. But report to remember that cheney is decidedly in the minority of her conference In The House side. There are only a handful of Reme Republicans who are speaking out against Donald Trump. Only a handful that Call Out his lie that he won the Election And Senator mitch mcconnell, the republican leader that did Call Out Donald Trump after the impeachment trial, of course, he voted to acquit Donald Trump. He called him out then. Refuses to do so again. Last week he was asked about whether or not he should Call Out Donald Trump. He sai said im looking at the future, not the past. From the Supreme Court, the court with a decision out moments ago ruled against immigrants in temporary status during that time applying for Green Cards. Lets get straight to jessica schneider. What stands out. Yeah this is a unanimous decision from the Supreme Court, guys its very short and in the Supreme Court issuing this decision on immigration. Immigrants that get the Green Cards, theyre not eligible. They arrived here legally even if theyve been in the u. S. , theyve been granted this Temporary Protected Status. This is often granted by the government for people who come from dangerous countries. This man in particular came from el salvador. He entered the u. S. Illegally but then a few years later the u. S. Government granted Him Temporary Protective Status which entitled him to stay here and work here. But then he wanted to apply for a Green Card to become a permanent legal resident. Thats what this case is about. The whether he can do that since he arrived here illegally but then was allowed to stay under tps. The Supreme Court this morning in a decision written by the justice and joined by all the justices, this is a unanimous decision, saying this morning that he cannot apply for a Green Card. He can not get a Green Card. This affects about 400,000 people potentially here under tps, maybe a fraction of that amount got here and entered illegally. So this decision saying that anyone here illegally that was then subsequently granted this Temporary Protected Status and allowed to stay here in The End, guys, cannot apply for or receive Green Cards. Of two people were killed including a 15yearold boy. Three others injured. This is the latest. In at least nine different Mass Shootings in cities across the country this weekend. This weekend alone as the country appears to be in the midst of a Summer Surge once again in Gun Violence. Natasha, what can you share . If you look at the side of your screen there, 253 Mass Shootings this year alone think of all the families suffering right now dealing with lost loved ones, dealing with people recovering from gunshot wounds. As you mentioned, quite a number of them happened this weekend alone. Lets Take A Look at the math now. Since friday through sunday, chicago had at five people killed, 40 wounded, one dead in freeport, michigan. Two dead in indianapolis on saturday. Three dead in baltimore on sunday in new orleans. Eight injured. St. Louis had four people injured. Salt lake city, one died, four injured. Cleveland, ohio, seven injured. And were just learning now after this map was made also in for th portland, oregon, a shooting that killed four people. You mention the Miamidade Shooting that happened very early this morning. That killed two including a 15yearold. Thats just one in a series of shooting incidents in that same county. Over the weekend they also had three people killed outside of a graduation party. And this all comes a week after a Mass Shooting they had over memorial Day Weekend for more than 20 people were shot. Two of them died. We met the father of one of the people shot. He kept saying they got the wrong person. The Police Director told us that a lot of the problems or at least in their county and likely across the country, theyre dealing with groups of people retaliating against Each Other over there. And, you know, a couple of the problems he said is that people do not want to tell on Each Other and Social Media is exacerbating some of the tensions between parties. And thats not something that they necessarily had to deal with when facing Gun Violence perhaps a couple decades ago. Jim and poppy . Natasha chen, thank you very much. A federal judge overturned californias three Decade Ban on Assault Weapons. This is a ruling that came on friday and the States Governor calls it a direct threat to public safety. In writing his decision, u. S. District judge called the Assault Ban a failed experiment. He even compared the Ar 15 Semiautomatic Rifle to a swiss Army Knife calling it a perfect combination of Home Defense Weapon and homeland defense equipment. Good for both home and battle. Trauma surgeons tell a story about the kinds of wounds these weapons cause. A man who lost his daughter to Gun Violence in the shooting responded this way. If a swiss Army Knife were used, most of the other kids and adults would be alive today. Let me deliver a message to this Activist Judge that has been at this for a while. Youre a liar. And your opinion is written. Utilizing the exact language of the Gun Lobby. These are not new words. These are not new phrases. They are not new expressions. You took the language from the Gun Lobby to write this opinion. My daughter was born in 2003. There was a federal Assault Weapons ban, okay . Following that, ending of that ban a 2004, the weapons were not common. They were not typical. Im fearful because i know there is someone out there right now that will go out and buy an ar 15 because of this judge. And use it. Powerful words from a grieving father. Obviously joining us now to talk about what is happening in his state, anthony renden. He himself lost several, three members of his family to Gun Violence. We appreciate you being here. It is, you know, i dont know the word to save. The fact this came down on national Gun Violence Awareness Day also just adds pain to what we just heard from that father. Where does California Go from here . You got these 30 days before this takes effect. But where does this leave the state . It leaves us with a couple of options. First of all, our Attorney General is going to appeal the decision. Hes already stated that. He has a 30day stay. Incredible faith in the efforts to lead the charge and the appeal. But we in california are going to continue our being a national leader in Gun Control. We have laws on the books which say that if youre not over the Abl Age of 2 11, you cant own a guf youve been convicted of domestic abuse, you cant own a gun. Were going to continue the laws and making sure that were a national leader in california. We know it can be safer. Gun laws vary enormously state to state. A state like texas, you have a law there proposed, right, to not even retire a license to carry a gun. I wonder if there are walls between our state and has california found that having a State Ban not repeated by its neighboring states and others, has it made a difference in terms of reducing the number of Gun Crimes that use these weapons . It does make a difference. It makes a difference in california and in other places as well. There is a study from Northwestern University which looked at the area, the decade from 1994 to 2004 and it showed conclusively that it does make a difference. These laws do make a difference. That being said, youre right. People with bring guns illegally from other states. We had a shooting in gillroy. It was friday and from nevada. So we need stronger Gun Control legislation. St however, this is from our neighbors. Can you speak to this in your professional capacity and also as a father. You tweeted back in march i think it was about your kmchild that will be 2 in september. You said we must stop. This see why Gun Control helps. We cannot do it alone. I want to be in a country where my daughter with grow up safely. How long has it been since weve had federal Gun Legislation and do you have some democrats now that are opposed to Hr 8 and 1446. Do members of your party overestimate his Sway Today . I think they do on the general population. His sway over the people who decide republican contests in terms of primaries, fundraising, get out the vote activities, is incredibly strong. But it is sort of feels like, you know, Jim Jones pulled 100 in jonestown but everyone thought it was pretty strange. You have this weird dynamic happening where the republican party just Cant Break with him. But he is losing power. He is diminished. When he took that stage the other night, you know, he is twice impeached under multiple investigations. And We Saw the consequences of the big Election Lie on January 6th. His team will never be able to recreate that magic. He sort of had in the summer of 2015 when he came on the stage. There was this kind of mass broad anticipation what is he going to do next . Who is he going after . Some people knew it was dangerous. But there was a circus like atmosphere that people couldnt take their away from. But now we know where that leads. And i think a lot of people are thankful that hes not on the television in their Social Media feeds anymore. But, yes. But you also have Liz Cheneys really interesting take on Kevin Mccarthy. He was in the neighborhood essentially and then listen from her. Its at maralago. Or whatever it was he was doing to me. So now what . She says what mccarthy did was inexcusable. Yeah, i mean this is a tough conversation that, you know, a minority of republicans like Liz Cheney is trying to force. I mean anyone that speaks out against the big Election Lie gets bood. They get censured and pummelled from The Party. The ten republicans that supported impeachment the second time around. The Trump Base is saying youre not welcome anymore, get out. Is Liz Cheney is talking about Kevin Mccarthy, other republican leaders, how you could look back to January 6th. And then there is the republican party. I mean this is the problem. And also fascinated by the fact that she said a lot of republicans would not support impeachment because they feared for their personal safety. And my question is, through their continued enabling of trump, how are they making things safer for Anyone Else . I mean i understand the selfish impulse to protect yourself. I completely understand wanting to protect your family. If you cant do the right thing for the country, congress probably isnt the right place for you. Because what they are doing is making everything dangerous. The threat is on going. That is another point that cheney is always quick to remind people about. In The New York Times they laid out three approaches for how to handle trump. Weve seen some of this in the public, you know, debate here. You have, you know, briefly alarm, right . Democrats alarm. Passing laws to make sure that, for instance, the Vote Isnt messed with again. The second for democrats take a more political path. Make a political argument to beat trump. Then the third is this, you hear a lot about. Well, hes going to go away. Just wait him out. Hell go away. You might call this the Mitch Mccana Mcconnell plan. What has taken place is that reasonable people in The Party have been pushed out or retired or left. Leading total control to, you know, people in the states that are running in arizona, restricting Voting Rights all over the place. I mean thats what happens. And so thats why we need people like Liz Cheney to Dig Heels in and make that fight. Because the country needs a strong republican party. The Report Finding that it was possible the Covid19 Virus escaped from that lab in wuhan china. Natasha has been covering this. This report was done in may of last year, natasha. And, listen, this is an open question. Democrats and republicans looking at the intelligence here as is the biden administration. What is particular about this report and what other Intel Work has been done since then to answer this question . Yeah, jim. So what is interesting about this report is that it was issued by researchers at the Lawrence Liver more laboratory in california. One of the many national labs that has been studying the question of where the coronavirus came from. And it was an early report that said that the Lab Leak Theory this theory that covid19 may have been man made in a laboratory and accidentally leaked was plausible. And this, of course, was very early on. It was at a time when the Intel Community Wasnt really giving a lot of Credence Or Weight to the theory that this could have originated in a lab. It was more inclined to conclude that this had originated through animals. And now lawmakers on Capitol Hill are pointing to this report and saying what other information might we not have had access to in the last year that perhaps could help us understand better what evidence these researchers had that allowed them to conclude that perhaps this Lab Leak Theory was plausible . Of course, getting to the answer of what caused this pan Em Diddic is of top importance to the administration and to lawmakers on the hill. No question. This drug is not for people with advanced alzheimers. Its really sad to say. That as you just sort of mentioned with your friends mom, those people need help so badly. This is a drug that has shown or as some people say sort of shown that it can help slow cognitive decline in the every, very Earl Stages of alzheimers. Lets take a hook at what the study showed an what an Fda Committee had to say. One study showed this drug which is made by biogen had no benefit at all. Then they did a second drug that showed there was a 22 reduction in cagneytive development if it was taken into the early stages. And, you know, a group of fda advisors actually advised against approving this drug. The concern is what does 22 mean . Does it mean anything for the patient . Does it change the quality of life . Also once this drug is out there on the market, we know that patients will be begging for it for people with advanced alzheimers. We know in the united states, doctors have a hard time saying no to patients and we, you know, are pretty sure this is going to be an expensive drug.
