You can fly if you have the big bucks. Theyll be auctioning off a flight. That Price Tag up to 2. 8 million. I dont think its in the cards for us. Im just thinking the last gift i got for my sister was a pair of shoes. It puts it into perspective. You can wear them more than once. Not quite the bragging rights. No, no. They were sandals. I cant even say that. Rachael, this is very cool. Thank you so much for talking about this with us. New day continues right now. Im John Berman alongside Brianna Keilar on this new day. A new interview with Congresswoman Liz Cheney putting the sharpest point yet on the former president s actions and the actions of other top republicans in the aftermath. And Senator Joe Manchin puts his foot down pledging to vote against a key voting Rights Bill Signaling once and for all anything the democrats want done will have to go through him. With less than a month to go, the new evidence that President Biden may be short of his July 4th vaccination goal. And coaching far right protesters how to access a State Capitol Building and they took his advice just days later. Welcome to our viewers in the united states and around the world. It is monday, june 7th, and Congresswoman Liz Cheney accusing former President Trump of committing the worst violation of the Oath Of Office in history by inciting the January 6th insurrection and shes calling on House Minority Leader Kevin Mccarthy who kissed President Trumps ring shortly after the riot. Did you know before he was going he was going . I didnt. And what did you i mean, what was your reaction when you saw the video on the screen . I was stunned. I could not imagine any justification for doing that, and i asked him why he had done it, and, you know, he said he had been in the neighborhood essentially. But its no. I just you know, as i said what Donald Trump did is the most dangerous thing, the most egregious violation of an Oath Of Office of any president in our history, and so the idea that a few weeks after he did that, the leader of the republicans in the house would be at maralago essentially, you know, pleading with him to somehow come back into the fold or whatever it was he was doing, to me, was inexcusable. In a wideranging interview, cheney also compares trump and his rhetoric to the Chinese Communist Party and she reflects on the Evolution And Future of the Republican Party, which does raise questions about her own political future. Lets talk about those with the host of the He Ax Files Podt with david axelrod. What stood out the most to you in the interview . First of all, if anyone thought she was going to pull her horns in, forget about it. Shes crying for the democracy and for policy. Shes very clear about that. She posits her own campaign in wyoming as a test of this and the direction of the party, but, you know, she was scathing in her criticism of trump for what happened on January 6th and the events leading up to it. Shes very worried that its going to continue and that he continues to be a provocative threat. She was caustic about exercise about whats going on down in arizona, the recount that the legislature has launched. She was very, very candid about her concerns. She also, by the way, you guys, was said something very troubling and security. They said they would have voted with her, but they were worried about their Safety And Family and security. She said, what does that mean for our democracy. Lets play that. We have that sound. I have had a number of members say to me, we would have voted to impeach, but we were concerned about our security. I think that in some ways people have sort of glossed over that, but i think thats a very important point to Pause And Conte contemplate, that you have members of the united States House of representatives for whom, you know, security their personal security or their family security, their concerns about that affected the way that they felt they could vote. Thats a really significant thing to say about the current state of our politics. Axe, i hope people are following this. It begged the question. I asked her about her own concerns in that regard. She has five children, you know, shes out there, and shes obviously been targeted by trump and his supporters, and, you know, she obviously was muted about her situation, but she said, yeah, i do have those concerns, and, yes, i have up to my security. There was a report recently that there are more expenses on her Campaign Report for security. But, you know, this is fundamentally, if you have legislators who are cant vote their conscience not because theyre worried about reelection but because theyre worried about their lives, theyre worried about their families, that is an existential challenge for our democracy, and she believes Donald Trump is at the root of this. Hes the cause of it. And shes going to be outspoken about it. She also compared Donald Trumps rhetoric to that of the chinese come it in party when it comes to casting doubt on the federal election system. Lets listen to that. When you listen to Donald Trump talk now, when you hear the language hes using now, it is essentially the same things that the Chinese Communist Party says about the united states and our democracy, and i think its important for people to stop and think about that for a moment. When he says our system doesnt work, that our democratic process, we suggest that its, you know, incapable of conveying the will of the people, you know, that somehow its failed, those are the same things that the chinese government says about us, and its very dangerous and damaging, and its not true. What do you think about that, david . Well, shes right, of course, that one of the projects of china, of russia is to portray democracy as broken, as corrupt, as, you know, irreparably divided. Trump is aiding in that project when he goes out there and spreads the Big Lie and malicious rumors about how our election went forward. She as youve noted at the beginning, shes at not exempting other republican leaders including Mccarthy And Steve scalise, the leaders of the house, for being enablers in this. She said the reason so many republicans believe this is because leaders havent stood up and told the truth. So she is not shes not cutting Anybody Slack here for their participation in this Big Lie. Its a fascinating interview. Its fascinating to hear. If you thought she was going to dial it down, think again. David axelrod, thank you. Great to see you. Have a good day. So Senator Joe Manchin, officially a giant wrench in President Bidens agenda. Over the Weekend Manchin put it in writing, he will not vote for the democrats farreaching Voting Rights bill, he will not vote to end the filibuster, and he also took his message to the airways. I think its the wrong piece of legislation to bring our country together and unite our country. Im not supporting that because i think it would divide us further. Its not going to be united and its not going to be the country we love and know and its going to be hard because it will be back and forth no matter whos in power. Joining me now is Democrat Jamaal Bowman of new york. Manchin is a no to doing anything to end the filibuster. He put it in writing. Your reaction. Joe manchin has become the new Mitch Mcconnell. Mitch mcconnell during Obamas Presidency said he would do everything in his power to stop obama. Hes also repeated that now during the biden presidency by saying he would do everything in his power to stop President Trump and now Joe Manchin is doing everything in his power to stop democracy and to stop our work for the people, the work that the people sent us here to do. Hr 1 is a huge bill not just in terms of Voting Rights but in getting money, politics, working against fraud and gerrymandering. Big money in politics is whats destroying our democracy, and the Republican Party is aiding and abetting in that, and President Trump is obviously doing that as well. So manchin is not pushing us closer to bipartisanship. Hes doing the work of the Republican Party by being an obstructionist like theyve been since the beginning of bidens presidency. Is that really fair to compare Joe Manchin to Mitch Mcconnell . Manchin would Point Out hes voted on legislation thats reached the floor. Hes vote 300 of the time with biden. And its not like theres any other democrat on earth who could be a senator from West Virginia right now, and if you didnt have Joe Manchin, theres almost zero chance youd have a democrat in West Virginia and zero chance youd have control of the u. S. Senate. The Bottom Line is this, Hr 1 has the majority of the vote. 65 of The American people support Hr 1 and well over 50 of the republicans support Hr 1. The american public sent us to washington to do the job. Consider this. Just a few weeks ago, we had a bipartisan piece of legislation looking to form a commission to study the January 6th insurrection. The first attack on our capitol since the war of 1812. It was a bipartisan piece of legislation, and it did not pass. Why . Because of the filibuster and because of the majority of republicans are focused much more on obstruction. To end the filibuster is a Jim Crow relic, and we have to do the work of The American people. Just to Point Out, manchin did vote for the bipartisan commission and he holds out hope that it could still pass, and he says and we have some sound i want to play for you. Hes holding out hope that he can, i guess, change some republican minds overall. Lets listen. We have seven brave republicans that continue to vote for what we know is right in the facts that they see them, not worrying about the political consequences. I believe theres a lot more of my republican colleagues and friends that feel the same way. I hope theyre able to rise to the occasion to defend our country and support our country and make sure we have a democracy for this republican of all the people. Im just very hopeful of that and i see good signs. How do you feel about his hopefulness . So this is not about hope. This is about doing the work. My office i am a democrat like Joe Manchin. My office has reached out to the senator multiple times to engage in conversation around saving and rescuing our democracy. I have yet to hear back from Senator Manchin, and this was months ago. So this is not about hope. Easy for us to say what were not going to vote for, what were not going to do. Its much harder to build a coalition to meet the needs of our democracy, and i wonder as Senator Manchin is moving out to reach the colleagues, is he responding to the polling, are they responding to the polling, and are we recognizing this moment in history to being essential to overall american history and really building the multiracial do democracy we are and not upholding a corporate agenda or Jim Crow White Supremacist relic, which is the filibuster. Congressman bowman, please come back on new day. Its great to have you. Thank you. Barack obama will be joining Anderson Cooper for an interview at 8 00 p. M. Tonight eastern time. President biden had hoped to have 70 of american adults vaccinated by the fourth of july, but is that goal within reality . With just a few weeks to go, well look at numbers. An incredible new video of a republican lawmaker advising far right protesters on how to get into the state capitol, even giving out his personal Cellphone Numbers. Jaycee tried Gain Flings for the first time the other day. The scent made quite an impression. I swear it was like that Towel And Jaycee were the only two left on earth. But. They werent. You can always spot a first timer. Gain flings with Oxi Boost and febreze. Try the new Light Scent from gain. Hello spring daydream. As of this morning more than 300 Million doses of the vaccine have been administered in the united states butthe pace has dropped to less than 1 Million a day. Some states have fallen behind and this affects President Bidens goal to have 70 of adults vaccinated by July 4th. Lets check in with harry. Two months ago, 41. 7 and three months ago, 23. 5 . We were jumping by 15, 20 points a month. Then all of a sudden a jump. And in the last week. Look at this. 62. 6 . This is not the pace we need to be setting if we want to reach that 70 goal by July 4th. Where are we falling behind . So i think this gives you a very good understanding of the Trend Line here. Look at this. Adult Pop Lake with at least one Vaccine Dose by the 2020 president ial winner. In the average state Joe Biden won, look at this. Were right near 70 already. 69 pr 69. 5 . In the State Trump won, 54. 6 . Look at that. Trum state, less than a 15point jump. The partisan gap has really widened. I was surprised by this. I realize it was basically even two months ago and now a huge separation. Thats right. What else have you got. To put a nice little ribbon on this, in the biden state, 70 plus, an additional 7 with 65 to 65. 9 . Youll probably get 20 of the 25 biden states that will reach that 70 mark. Look at this. Among the Trump States, 65 or less. I dont think theres going to be a single Trump State that reaches that 70 goal that biden put out. Were talking about adults, 70 of adults, but were seeing this spread into the younger people also, right . Thats exactly right. Theyre basically doing what their parents are doing. This is part of the widening gap. The top 25 vaccinated states, 12 to 17, 21 of those won by Joe Biden, and this 21 includes all top 20 won by Joe Biden in vaccinations 12 to 17. The top 20 for the 12 to 17yearold group, theyre really following their parents on this. Their parents got vaccinated. Theyre getting vaccinated too. Where are we on the total population . On the total population, when you put the children and adults together, what you see is in the average states biden won, 57 of everybody got vaccinated. 43 of those in the Trump States. If you look here on april 6th, it was a fourpoint gap. Now a 14point gap, a winding gap thats developed over the last few months. People still have a chance to go out and get them. They work. They definitely work. I got my two doses. I feel good. You feel good. They work. Go out and get your veep and save lives if you havent yet. Brianna . I feel good after getting mine, i will say. Theres new video that appears to show an Oregon Lawmaker to give advice on how to access the state capitol. This includes giving out his personal number. Hes accused of allowing protesters into the closed Capitol Building while lawmakers were debating coronavirus restrictions. He has been charged now with Firstdegree Official Misconduct and second degree criminal tre trespass. Cnn Early Start Laura Jarrett joins us now. This ups the ante. It ups the ante for sure. Mike neuman says hes been the victim of mob justice, but this newly released video shows he gave access to the Stain Capitol was no accident. You can hear him answering questions from the audience about access to the building around telling them where to stand and who to text once theyre there. Well set up an operational Hall Pass which i dont know anything about. If you accuse me of knowing about it, ill deny it. Ill give you the Cellphone Number [ bleep ] but thats screwing up the numbers. Somebody might exit the door while youre standing there. That bleeping you heard a second as was nearman giving out a rare set of numbers, but he confirmed its his Cellphone Number. Its another understood at the time if he knew he was being recorded. The scheme hes operating here, operation Hall Pass is remarkably similar to what happens five days later. Thats when an armed group shows up at the Capitol And Neuman exit as Side Door leaving it open just long enough for protesters to get through. As you mentioned, hes facing criminal charges but hes still in office. A committee is set to meet this week on whether he violated Capitol Rules and decide the consequences. Wow. What was he thinking there seeing him say that to folks a that event. Laura jarrett, thank you very much. Sure. Still ahead, they want to break free. So not unconnected from this, a big endorsement for the Race Firefighter new York City mayor with days to go, Alexandria Ocasiocortez threw her support behind riley. Joining us now is mr. Adams. Good to see you. People know Alexandria Ocasiocortez. What do you make of her endorsement of one of your opponents . Politics is local and we want to end inequalities In The City across america, but this is where we differ. Just a thought when we see 8yearold children and 10yearold babies being murdered in our city, i just dont support taking away our Law Enforcement Apparatus as a former Police Officer and as a person who has worked for social justice In The City. If people are trying to understand what Eric Adams as mayor would look like, would it look more like former Mayor Rudy Giuliani in terms of crime or former Mayor Bill de blasio . Like david dinkins. Then were going to evolve to another level. Police will have a role but you have so many other areas. We have to rethink policing in america so we can get to the source of the crisis. What have you thought over the last year as youve watched this discussion on policing evolve . What have been your feelings . What ive basically stated is were finally getting message out. As a young man 15 years oil, i was arrested and beat badly by Police Officers. I didnt say woe is me. I went into the Police Department because at the same time i lost a good friend who died during the crack wars. I knew we had to have justice and safety, and now people are picking up that conversation. I spent 22 years fighting for safety and justice, and now were going to continue that under the mayorship of Eric Adams. I ask you about giuliani, because there are people who lived or worked or came through new York City who said, well, thats when crime was down and the days we should go back to. How would you assess he managed crime . He used heavy handedness. They used every Means Acc accessible. I pushed back on that. What we must do is use our tools in the correct way to keep our city safe but not to take away the justice of the citizens. For people who have been watching this race, its fascinating. Yes, it is. They saw on the Debate State last week things got a little testy. Heres a taste of what we all saw. You do not vote in municipal elections at all. I just dont know how the hell do we have your become our mayor with this racket like this . We need to turn the page on the people who have been running our city into the ground for the last number of years, and you talk about public safety and security, again, three out of four shootings in brooklyn are going unsolved right now you. re the brooklyn borough president. Whats going on between you and andrew yang, the former president ial candidate . Being on a stage like that doesnt bother me. Listen, ive wrestled with people who had knives on the Subway Systems during the 90s. I know what it is to go after dangerous people. But also know in between that crime, you have everyday new yorkers. They want safe, affordable, clean cities, and thats what im going to push for. Last question, rank force voting. Whats your message to your supporters, people who want to vote for you . What do you tell them to do with their second, third choice. Im telling them to rank me one. Thats so important. And then look at the other candidates and make a determination on who they believe should be their second choice, but if they dont believe anyone who fits the same belief as i do of having an affordable, safe city and equalities then rank eric and leave the others. Leave it blank. Yes, leave it blank. Mr. Brooklyn president , thanks so much for joining us. President biden embarks on a trip to brussels, then on to geneva to meet with vladimir putin. About 200 were killed in a Train Crash in southern pakistan. Two arrests were made in a suspected Road Rage Case of the sixyearold boy sitting in the backseat of his mothers car. The Highway Patrol said they arrested two people in their home in costa mesa, california. They are expected to be charged with murder. The year 2020 expected to have the highest Car Crash Fatality rate since 2007 despite the Record Number of americans Working From Home Last year. The government said the average number of miles driven fell 13 while fatalities rose especially among young drivers ages 18 to 24. Oil prices hitting 70 a barrel for the first time flee years. The demand for Gas And Jet fuel as america reopens, people paying more at the pump. And Tim Cook announced the companys new work from Home Policy, mandating that employees work in the office three days a week beginning in september. In an open letter they say, quote, without the inclusivity that flexibility brings, many of us feel we have to choose between either a combination of our families, our wellbeing, and being empowered to do our best work or being a part of apple. This is a Decision None of us take lightly and a decision many would prefer not to have to make. With us now is zoey shiffer. Zoey, thank you for coming on to talk about this thing that affects people across the u. S. Tell us about this letter and what employees are asking for. Yes, and thank you so much for having me. We have to understand this is a big shift for apple which discouraged people from working from home prior to the pandemic. Its working on products and design which is harder to do remotely, though not impossible as weave seen over the past year. So americans really feel the policy, a big step for apple, really has not gone far enough. They want a new flexible work from Home Policy where people who want to work from home can all the time. When they say its not inclusive to talk about going back to work three days a week, what do they mean . They mean that people have really different needs. They feel like if apple really wants to increase its Diversity And Inclusion efforts, it needs to hire people all across the country and not just people who can afford to live in the bay area. So as you mentioned, apple really isnt you know, its not known for i dont want to say being friendly to workers, but its certainly not known for workers Rights Activism on the part of its employees. It seems like its actively discouraged. This obviously is different. How do you think apple is going to respond to this . Yeah, absolutely. No, the company is very top down, very higeirachical. They will have to listen to their employees. There was a book that people found offensive. Employees wrote a letter asking for an investigation. An hour after we disclosed the story, he was fired. Do i think people will work from home forever . No, but it could be more flexibility it rolled out. Well, we know all eyes will be on this case. Its going to affect others as well. Zoey scffer, thank you for your reporting. Thanks so much for having me. So the coronavirus is far from over, but there is attempts to rewrite the narrative, some coming from the president and his allies, some calling on dr. Anthony fauci to be fired. Joining us now, Staff Writer mic lawrence wright. Lawrence, im such a fan of your book. You touch on in your new book where you see people like the former president touting dr. Fauci saying he should be fired, painting him as the big villain in this entire pandemic. I wonder what you make of that . I think its totally ridiculous. Fauci has served under seven President S. Hes been a stalwart in public health, and obviously more people trust him than trust the former president. So i think the reaction that you find from the Trump Administration and people that work for it is a kind of resentment of, you know, the fact that fauci is still in public life and the former president is on the margins. So im going to ask you the Big Question which your book actually focuses on, and it sounds like a basic question, but what went wrong in this pandemic . Thats a Big Question, john. It is, but you do a good job of laying out a few basic things that were turning points. I would say there were three points we could have made a difference. The first was in January Of 2020 when the former director of the cdc, robert redfield, had a conversation with his counterpart in china, george gao. Gao assured redfield this was not a human disease, it didnt pass between people, even though chinese authorities knew differently at that time. Redfield offered to send a team to china, and the chinese authorities wouldnt let us in. Had americans gone on, a team of cdc specialists, they would have found out that not only was it transmissible between people, that it was transmissible through asymptomatic infection. That was something that we werent prepared for at all. So we didnt know that. The other thing that was a fiasco was the cdc testing. It took five weeks. And then when they finally released the test, they knew even when it went out the door that 30 of the time it would fail. And so it had to be recalled and reconfigured. That set us back and we never caught up to the test. Finally we had one last swing of the bat. That was a mask and that came in april. When the president rolled out the Mask Idea at the council of his public health people, he said, you know, ive been told that masks work, they prevent the spread of the disease, and you can wear it. Im not going to wear it, but you can wear it. So instead of being a promoter became a saboteur of the very plan he was announcing. Do you ever imagine how many lives could have been saved . I think about it a lot, and its very disturbing to consider that hundreds of thousands of lives might have been spared if there had been a higher standard of leadership in charge of this effort. But, you know, we were bound to suffer. Every nation has suffered, but some have suffered far more than others, and america was supposed to be the best prepared nation in the world. And yet in the balance, it looks like we have done the worst job of all. The book is nthe plague year. We could have killed hundreds of people instead of hundreds of thousands of people. Lawrence, thank you for being on. Thank you. New day continues on. Im John Berman alongside le Brianna Keilar. Just ahead, why fellow democrats maybe should not be mad at Joe Manchin. And a critical investigation into Donald Trump. Were joined live in just minutes. The lawyer leading the suit of the insurrection joins us. And the claim that his team cranks big begs the question, did they ever really listen to the lyrics
