What the republican congresswoman said about Kevin Mccarthy, her safety, and why she compares Donald Trump. Be prepared for January 6thstyle Mob Violence as Benjamin Netanyahu gets close to an exit. And explaining a keynote vote. And its one of the most contentious decisions the fda has made in years but today they decide on the fate of the controversial alzheimers drug. Good morning to our viewers here in the United States and all around the world. Its monday, june 7th. This Morning Brandnew comments from Liz Kmany after being booted by house republicans from her leadership last month. Cheney has called out Donald Trump by inciting the January 6th insurrection and in terms ive not heard before, she describes how she found out that House Minority Leader Kevin Mccarthy went to maralago to Kiss Donald trumps ring. Listen to this. Did you know he was going before he was going . I didnt. What did you i mean what was your reaction when you saw the video on the screen . I was stunned. I could not imagine any justification for doing that, and i asked him why hed done it, and he said, well, he had just been in the neighborhood essentially. But its no. I just as i said, i think what Donald Trump did is the most dangerous thing, the most egregious violation of an oath of office of any president in our history, and so the idea that a few weeks after he did that, the leader of the republicans in the house would be at maralago essentially, you know, pleading with him to somehow, you know, come back into the fold or whatever it was he was doing to me was inexcusable. Joining us now chief national Affairs Correspondent Jeff Zeleny and Cnn Correspondent lauren fox. Thats something to hear. At the time she was the number three republican in the republican conference in the house and she didnt know the leader of the conference was going to see Donald Trump. Pretty amazing but probably not that surprising because by that point as lauren knows well, the tensions were pretty high between Liz Cheney and Kevin Mccarthy. Shes continuing to speak with a clear voice against Election Fraud, that this was not true, and she quickly learned she was standing alone. You know, this change in such a short period of time because Kevin Mccarthy first supported her in the election to be the head of the conference, but then that changed because she kept speaking out. The tensions between the two is so raw and so intense and Donald Trump in some of his final words in leaving office is keep an eye on Liz Cheney go, after Liz Cheney. So its very acrimonious as far as that goes. But shes remained consistent, one of the few republicans whos not bowed down, acquiesced to President Trump, and shes made it clear shes going to keep on this approach, even if it takes her down. I have to say to be disgusted by kevinen mccarthy, but to be disgusted and surprised, blindsided, it gives you a sense of Liz Cheneys State Of Mind and Kevin Mccarthys State Of Mind. Youve talked about how the former president targeted Liz Cheney and she talked to David Axelrod about concerns, Safety Concerns of her own. Listen. Ive had a number of members say things to me like we would have voted to impeach, but we were concerned about our security, and i think that in some ways people have glossed over that, but i think thats a very important point to pause and come ten plate, that you have members of the united States House of representatives for whom their personal security, their family security, their concerns affected the way they would vote. Axelrod asked her, lauren, if she had security threats. She said yes. She didnt want to talk about it because i think shes a little nervous about it. It was interesting to hear they were under duress. Thats something thats overshadowed Capitol Hill since jan 6th. If you think about the fact there are now metal detectors when you enter the house floor, thats one visual piece that lawmakers are making. If you remember, there are also sort of discussions right around the second impeachment where the managers were getting threatening phone calls. I remember David Cicilline was getting messages, some that he shared with me. To think about the threat that is ongoing on Capitol Hill and not just on The Hill. Remember, these are members who have to travel back and forth from their district, so theres this really ongoing sort of threat so much so that they were told they could use their personal Office Budget for more security when they went back to the district, and i think thats getting to be a real problem among Capitol Hill because this isnt going away. The more former President Trump talks about the lie, the more they have to make a serious calculation about how they vote. And thats a problem for democracy. Its really a different time that members of congress are operating in and cheney compared it to the chinese party. Lets listen. When you listen to Donald Trump talk now, when you hear the language hes using now, it is essentially the same things that the chinese communist party, for example, says about United States and our democracy. And i think its important for our people to stop and think about that for a moment. When he says our system doesnt work, that our democratic process, we suggest that its, you know, incapable of conveying the will of the people, you know, that somehow its failed, those are the same things that the chinese government says about us, and its very dangerous and damaging, and its not true. What do you think about that, jeff . I mean that is extraordinary when you think of, you know, a very established member of the republican party suggest that the former president comparing him to communist china. But look. There is some truth to what shes saying about the undermining of democracy, and that is what were seeing happening playing out in real time here. Now, the question about all of, there what does this do for Liz Cheney, of course, she is facing a series of challengers. Her primarys not until august 22. But as shes campaigning in wyoming, shes rarely talking about this. The reality is are we going to see former President Trump in wyoming between now and then . I think thats a big possibility. Certainly. He still has such a base of support, i think shes doing what she thinks is the right thing to do. It doesnt mean it doesnt come without political risks. It could spell the end of her time in congress. Shes fine with that. Shes sticking to her decision. Shes not going to change. Well see what that bodes for Liz Cheney. Jeff, lauren, great to see you this morning. Thanks. Developing overnight in israel, Naftali Bennett is calling for a calm and orderly transition of power in a face of increasingly hostile and inciting critical rhetoric. Netanyahu is spouting claims of Election Fraud, echoing President Trump, and theyre warning that things have turned violent and could become lethal. Cnn has reporters in israel and around the world covering this. Lets begin with hadas gold. Its so interesting following violence against u. S. Lawmakers to hear Benjamin Netanyahu that say things that sound so incredibly similar, hadas. Reporter yeah, john. There are members of this parliament, especially of this new coalition who have received such level of threats theres a fear here this parliament could experience moblevel violence similar to what the u. S. Capitol experienced on January 6th. The head of the israeli internal Security Service said in this period we have identified an intensifying and severe increase in violence. It is our duty to come out with a clear and definitive call to stop the discourse and violence. The responsibilities rests on all of our shoulders. Benjamin netanyahu and his allies have been Reailing Againt it calling it fraud, calling for demonstrations outside of their houses. Even netanyahus Sons Facebook Page was suspended for put ought their addresses, Calling Fuor demonstrations. Now, Naftali Bennett who is set to be the next Prime Minister in his speech Last Night called on netanyahu, actually his former boss, called for him to step aside calmly and let the process continue, telling netanyahu not to leave a Scorched Earth behind you. What were waiting to see today is if the speaker will call a vote of confidence for the new government. Naftali bennett is calling for it to come as soon as wednesday. Every day that passes gives netanyahu and his allies more time to try to convince members, try to pressure them to try to vote against this coalition. John . Its interesting to see what rhetoric in the United States can have around the world. Hadas gold, thanks so much for that. Also developing overnight, early results in mexicos extraordinarily violent midterm elections and they show a vote being handed to the defeated. At least 96 politicians and candidates were as is nated. Matt rivers is live in Mexico City. It looks like this is the message that President Omar Obrador met. Reporter thats exactly right. When Vice President Kamala Harris meets with him, hell have less power than did going into this weekend. Morena that is the political party founded a few years ago lost seats in the lower House Proechl jeczs put them at getting 200 seats. Its enough to push through constitutional reforms, legislative items he really wanted to. Critics say, look, this is rebuke against a president whos shown tendencies to take power away. He still has the majority in congress. But functionally hes less powerful than he was before these midterm elections, but we should not look away from the fact that these elections were extremely violent. 96 candidates or politicians killed during this Campaign Season that started back in september. More than 900 were targeted for murder, to assaults, to threats. Its an extremely violent era in mexico, and unfortunately these elections were not spared from that reality. It would be interesting to see what the Vice President of the United States has to say to the president in mexico when she arrives later on this evening. Matt rivers, you will be there. Overnight Vice President Kamala Harris landed in Guatemala City after her flight was slightly delayed with a plane difficulty. Cnns Injeremy Diamond live wit the latest. It was hard getting through, but now the work begins, jeremy. Reporter she certainly did, but the Plane Issues will be far from the biggest test the Vice President faces during that trip. Remember Vice President Kamala Harris came into office with very little foreign policy experience. This trip will be a key part of doing so. The Vice President s national Security Adviser told me Last Night the reason she selected guatemala and the northern triangle as her first foreign trip as Vice President , she wants to show the priority on the strategy shes trying to place on the root causes of migration. They are challenges, everything from poverty to Climate Change to corruption. The Vice President s team has made it clear corruption is the key to the pandemic in the world including guatemala. Thats not the view shared by the president of guatemala. Nonetheless the Vice President s team telling me that they plan on having some News Today on the Anticorruption Front following those discussions with the Vice President. After the Vice President finishes up in guatemala, Shell Head to Mexico City where again as matt was talking about she faces another whole host of challenges over there. Jeremy diamond, please keep us posted. So Senator Joe Manchin just made it official. Why he is now a Road Block to a big part of the biden agenda. Im not supporting that because i think it would divide us further. I dont want to be in a country that divides us any furtherer. Thats Senator Joe Manchin, announcing he will not support the voting Rights Bill or end the legislative filibuster. Manchin wrote an oped, a new one, and he says we now are witnessing the fundamental right to vote has itself become overtly politicized. Torts debate on how to protect our vote and hold elections is not about finding ground but seeking partisan advantage. Joining me now is walter schaub, hes now senior ethics fellow for the project on government oversight. Walter, its great to have you here this morning. Thanks so much for coming in. What do you think about this. Its about seeking partisan advantage. Its terrible to say, unbelievably cynical. What thats saying is Jim Crow sweeping the states and the opposite is trying to protect the right of americans to vote. He does say hell consider the John Lewis Voting Rights Act instead of Hr 1. Obviously one doesnt have as much, doesnt have all the democrats would want in it, but certainly it is the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. What do you say to that . Thats an important piece of legislation that has to pass, but its not at the Hr 1 provisions that would affect a lot more change. The John Lewis Bill is a narrow targeted bill trying to restore part of the civil Rights Act that got struck down in 2013. It would allow states to it would require states with a history of racist legislation to receive preclearance before making changes, but it wouldnt do anything to help us with states like Florida And Georgia that have already made changes and wouldnt Increase Access to the ballot the way hes proposing they would do. Hes talking about the fight over Voting Rights and were seeing legislators enacting bills that will make it harder for voters to vote. Hes essentially saying this is a normal partisan battle between democrats and republicans looking for an advantage. And its absolutely not that. It certainly is in the sense that the people pushing Voter Suppression Legislation are seeking a partisan advantage. But to say youre trying to give people the right to vote is reducing the right to democracy. There are scertain fundamentals that shouldnt be viewed as partisan, including most importantly the right to vote, which is the fundamental thing that makes us a republic. I want to ask you something else. Cnn has confirmed Mark Meadows actually sent a bunch of emails to the Attorney General during the transition, Pressing Rosen and the doj to investigate baseless right Wing Voter Fraud conspiracies. How worried are you learning this in. Its a terrifying development. Weve had plenty of suspicion. That is the worst thing a government can do is weapon nice the criminal investigative apparatus of this state for partisan reasons. It terrifies me if they tried once, they could try again either in this administration, future administrations down the road. So i think its important theyre going to be looking into this. There needs to be consequences for this sort of assault on democracy. Its weakness revealed is what i hear you saying. Yes. Walter schaub, thank you so much. This is not a drug for people with advanced alzheimers. This is according to a new report in The New York Times. In the times they say its creating intense pressure on the cia to find new ways to gather intelligence and carry out Counterterrorism Strikes in the country. Joining me now is one of The New York Times reporters who is behind the story, mark mazzetti. Hes washington investigative correspondent at the times and a national security analyst. This is interesting. I love how you lay this out. Tell us why the cia is in a bind. For about 20 years theyve used a large Military Presence in afghanistan kind of as a cover do their operations, to gather intelligence, do various Counterterrorism Strikes, use bases along the eastern border to go into pakistan, and with the military leaving, they no longer have that. So the scramble is to figure out where to baze cia officers, how to actually gather intelligence without a large presence on the ground, and as one of the former officers was quoted, he said when youre not on the ground and youre relying on your own agents, human informants, its kind of like a game of telephone. Its very difficult and also very difficult figuring out what country might allow the cia and the military to use bases because theres a lot of thorny diplomacy. Why is this essential . What is the cia able to glean . What do they do with this information . Well, the real concern is, of course, that once the u. S. Military leaves, the very weak government cannot sustain itself very long. The Security Forces are still not up to grade to be able to protect the country. So the taliban could gradually take over in the country. Other militant groups. It could revert to something akin to what it was like before 9 11. And that creates the problem of, you know, the terrorists Safe Haven. So whether its the Cia Or Mil military. It could be further operations. These are some of the real tough decisions that President Biden and the biden administration are going to have to make after the pullout this year. So if theyre not in afghanistan, if the u. S. Doesnt have a presence in afghanistan, the cia doesnt, what are they looking at . What are the possibilities of being able to keep an eye on afghanistan so it doesnt become a terrorist Safe Haven . The current plan is to have military and cia drones and other assets in the persian gulf countries. Its a really long way to go. It sure is. For a lot of reasons thats not ideal. Theyre looking for bases that are closer. So the first obvious choice might be tpakistan. Theres a long entangled history over the past 20 years. Theres been some discussion about having a base that the cia, maybe others could use. The price is pretty high in terms of the pakistanis would currently try to sign off on who the United States might want to target. They have a long history with the taliban. Thiss not an easy option. Theres discussions over former soviet republicans. But Vladimir Putin would have something to say about that, not be too happy. Its sort of in the churn right now, and its not settled. Its not settled. We know that you will be trying to settle it. Mark mazzetti, thank you so much for the report. One other note, andy, the Red Sox swept the yankees. I just felt the need to put that out there. Now they know. A classified report suggesting a wuhan Lab Leak may have triggered the pandemic has reemerged as a Focal Point for lawmakers investigating the origins of covid19, and Cnns Natasha Bertrand has more on this with us. Tell us about this. Tell us about what theyre looking at. Yeah. So this classified report that was drafted by a Research Lab called livermore in california suggested back in May Of 2020 that there may have been evidence for this Lab Leak theory, and, of course, that was kind of politically taboo at the time. The Intelligence Community was not publicly saying they had any support necessarily that this may have been man made in a laboratory, so this Topsecret Report that was drafted by these researchers made its way months later to Policy Makers and to certain key lawmakers on Capitol Hill. And now theres a new push by some lawmakers on The Hill to dig more into this report and see what evidence they had at that early period that contributed to their belief that this could have been a leak from a laboratory that caused this pandemic of covid19. And so certain lawmakers are kind of angry because they say they did not see that report until much later and they have said that this could have provided key evidence at a key moment in time to better understand the origins of this pandemic. And so now what these republicans primarily republicans on The Hill are doing is theyre requesting briefings from the Energy Department which oversees all of these national labs, and theyre trying to use this as kind of a Jumping Off Point to say, looking scientists early on here Thought it was plausible that this came from a lab, why are we only learning about this now. Of course, some lawmakers and some staffers on The Hill downplayed the significance of this report, telling us that actually it doesnt reveal that much more than we already know because the Intelligence Community has come out and said, look, it could either be a Lab Leak or come from animals, we just dont know yet. The report says much the same. Time t timing of it, why didnt they know sooner. Natasha, thank you for that report. A stark warning from Energy Secretary jennifer granholm. Targeting of Food And Gas and water and hospitals. Reporter just in the last few weeks we have seen these Attack Os an pipeline. Numerous government agencies, the meat industry, and thats just to name a few. Now we have the Secretary Of Energy saying in no uncertain terms that these bad actors do have the capability to completely shut down the u. S. Power grid. Take a listen. You see the earth from space changes you. It changes your relationship. Do you think that adversaries of the United States have the capability right now to shut down the Power Grid . Yeah, they do. I mean i think that there are very maligned actors who are trying even as we speak. There are thousands of attacks on all aspects of the Energy Sector and the private sector generally. Its happening all the time. And this is why the private sector and the Public Sector have to work together. And this is what the president is doing. And you can really hear the sense of urgency there as the biden administration figures out how exactly to deal with the cyber attack. Now, we have seen them take a number of steps just last week. They sent a letter to private companies urging those companies to take these ransomware attacks more seriously. We know that the doj has signaled theyre going to treat cyber attacks with the same protocols that they treat terrorism, but all the experts im talking to and really what weve seen, this simply isnt enough.
