Doing. We could have had it all and then late night is hit with the biggest challenge it has ever faced. Time for Social Distancing, pack your things and go they were always in your home, but now you get to be in theirs. My first guest tonight, as you can see is mr. Bubble. People were just like Everything In The World sucks right now. I needed this so much. Just swing for the fences and see how many lives you can ruin. Something has changed. You cant ignore it. Stop saying this is not who we are and start asking what can i do to change it. Cutting the cord to the Cable Company or the Satellite Company is a terrifying prospect. My presidency entering the fourth quarter, interesting stuff happens in the fourth quarter. Very few people leave the game when theyre on top of their game, and thats what Jay Leno did last night. In 2014 as Jay Leno retired, there was definitely a more dissipated, fractured late night environment. This idea of late Night Television is evolving. What is television . Streaming services and cable. People can watch whAt They want when they want to watch it. With the advent of the internet, Jimmy Fallon was already writing things that were meant to be consumed in a different manner than the traditional three network late night way. So weve done late night probably about five years. Im so happy, 12 30. Im happy following Jay Leno. He was always greAt To me. By the time jay is leaving in 2014, everybody expects that Jimmy Fallon is going to get the Tonight Show. Especially because Lorne Michaels is now running the Tonight Show, and he is going to bring his guy, Jimmy Fallon, who is doing the 12 30 show At This point along with him. I think hes just a brilliant performer. Aside from the jokes, you have to have charm. And i think thats the number one thing for a late Night Host. Then jay called me, and he goes so im thinking about maybe stepping down soon. I go when ever you want to do it, lets do it the right way. We should do a sketch. In the news all they do is say im replacing you they think i can woo the demo. When we took over the Tonight Show, i said maybe think about bringing the Tonight Show back to where it began, which is new york city. Its where johnny started the show. Before that Steve Allen had done the Tonight Show there. Late Night Tv Start inside that studio. That was a brilliant thing, update The Sound, update the lighting, a new design for an ongoing tradition. Jimmy fallon welcome, everybody. Thank you so much. Im lucky to say my parents are still here with us. Theyre here to see me. Mom and dad, I Love You guys. Remember when i graduated High School . That was a big deal that was giant. Thanks for being here, guys. My dad heckles me from the audience. He says we paid a lot of money for that school. We didnt pay a lot of money, it was a public school. His son is hosting the first ever Tonight Show. It might not go well. Zip it Jimmy Fallon is so different than all the other hosts. He really is there as an entertainer. He came out of sketch comedy. He loves characters. Jimmy is out there doing in a lot of ways, all the variety show. He also likes to play games with his guests and this goes back to what Steve Allen was doing with his guests. Come on, jimmy. The thing that i think about with johnny and with Steve Allen and with jack paar, i think if they can only see what were doing, i think they would be really proud. Ive got my tight pants, ive got my tight pants, ive got my tight pants on they would love thAt The internet exists, because they would do a bit and it would air once and people talked about it the next day. Just talked about it. You couldnt see it. Thank you, kids with mohawks for letting us know how important it is to your parents that we think theyre cool. I think that now the morning after audience is important because you can sort of see things jimmy does on youtube. The show had a tremendous start, and we just kept Building And Building and building. Thank you, Jimmy Fallon for taking over the Tonight Show at 11 30 so i can take over at late night at 12 30. When lorne called me to say that it was the next step for me, it was probably one of the few things that made sense after everything i had done at snl. A man in hawaii who came face the face with a shark while surfing survived by punching the shark in the face. Meanwhile, i saw a cockroach in my bathroom, and now i shower At The gym. I liked being head writer. I liked being Weekend Update anchor, but i had never thought about what i would be doing next. The biggest difference i knew was wanting to show everybody that i can do a different thing than the Weekend Update. You saw me sit, but now watch this. I can also stand. Prepare to have your minds blown. While taylor swerft, did i say that right . New 911 Texting service. Im going to keep saying words wrong. The very first show, there was some awkwardness but i did not doubt that he would figure it out. I got better at it but certainly not the best at it. It seemed silly to run away from the thing i had spent the first half of my career working on, and so i sat back down. Good evening, everybody. How is everybody doing tonight . [ cheering ] all right. In that case, lets get to the news. I remember watching the first episode when he first did the deskalogue, and he came alive. His face came alive, and you knew he figured it out. In 2014, new people were coming in, there was a big shift in the generations. The culture had fragmented, which has impacted both on the size of the audience and on the shows. It became more difficult to make massive stars in the culture. When you have seven of something, i dont know if its the same when you only have one. Earlier today, i phoned leslie moonves, and i said, leslie, its been great, youve been great, the network has been great, but im retiring. This is really yep. This is you actually did this . Yes, i did. Wow. The thought of David Letterman retiring, leaving, there was a healthy denial until it was real because he was the jewel in the crown. For god sakes, the man put a camera on a monkey. It seems so simple now. Everything i learned about late Night Television, i learned from watching David Letterman. In the last couple of months, you had every great star who had been on the show came and paid tribute. The only thing have i left to do for the last time on a television program, thank you and good night. He was The Voice of a true generation and reinvented television for that generation. This man has influenced every host who came after him and even a few who came before him, hes that good. I got to tell you, i do not envy whoever they try to put in that chair. People were afraid i was contagious. I felt gross. It was kind of a shock after i started cosentyx. Four years clear. Real people with Psoriasis Look and feel better with cosentyx. Thats pure gold. vo this is more than just a building. Its an aipowered Investment Firm with billiondollar views. A cuttingedge datasecurity enterprise. Yes, with a slide. Bumpadum, bumbumbumbum when we were making decisions about who was going to take over after dave, the pressure was enormous. I really only knew a world with David Letterman. It was scary. Someone leaves, there is always someone who can fit into their shoes. There is nOne Of Us that is irreplaceable. The conversation was always about finding the very best person, and stephen was always one of the most innovative and freshest voices in the comedy landscape. And in fact, Colberts Manager had deliberately timed the last two or three of his contracts to coincide with lettermans. Stephen colbert, who was a correspondent on The Daily Show, who then hosted the ironic colbert report. Can you imagine what would have happened to america if we hadnt gone to war in vietnam . That means no Forrest Gump and therefore no Bubba Gump shrimp Shack Mac cheese. Stephen had great insight as to what kind of content they should design. It has to be a little noisier, it has to be provocative in order for it to be shared and ultimately go viral. So now you really do have a sweeping change by 2015. Colbert is preparing to take over for letterman. His Cbs Premeir is three weeks away. Jimmy fallon gets the Tonight Show and it is number one in late night now. Jimmy kimmel has moved up to 11 35. Hes really finding his voice. And there is a president ial election coming up. I am running for President Of The United States. People are already trying to figure out whAt To call Bill Clinton if hillary is elected president. Yeah. So far the most popular choices are the first man, the first husband, and that Naked Guy Running across the south lawn. Im a candidate for President Of The United States of america. America needs a bold new vision. Its time for the country to make a decision. Ladies and gentlemen, my father, donald j. Trump. A Billionaire Vanity Candidate taking the escalator to the white house. When Donald Trump announced his candidacy, Jon Stewart seemed over the moon. Trump is the party your brain at 3 00 a. M. Lets go stick a [ bleep ] in the mailbox. I was the last correspondent hired by jon. Hassan. I had learned so much from jon for the year and a half, two years i was there. Then he called me to his office. He said i think its thAt Time for me to leave the show. I got maybe four or five years with the kids before they really dont want anything to do with me. Yeah. And im just not there. You cant go 9 00 to 9 00 for 16 years and think youre going to be able to tell them to not smoke pot. You hope is up at 9 00 p. M. , dont get high, all right, good night, sweetie. When jon decided to leave the show, america had a hissy fit. What are we going to do . Oh my god, whats going to happen . I dont know if anybody could have predicted not only what happened in the world of politics. It feels like a dream scape. Walking around the building today, nobody was making eye contact, because thing is so much Love And Pride filling the building right now that we just dont want to drown it. He was incredibly generous, authentic, and i totally understand why he became who he became. So i say to you tonight, friends, the best defense against bullshit is vigilance. So if you smell something, say something. We certainly would have been very happy to retain Stephen Colbert and put on the today show. Is there a Party Or Anything . I brought a lot of people from cbs and i told them that i know you. Why wouldnt he leave . Gets ms. Own show on television. Hes got a band. He has his own theater. New york city, its Stephen Colbert thank you for all joining me for my first episode of The Late Show with starring Stephen Colbert. It is a very specific trial by fire when youre taking over for David Letterman. And i dont care how funny you might have been. Youre now trying to gain the Trust And Acceptance and most importantly the laughs of the people who are used to Somebody Else. This is the first time that i have just been myself. When i got the offer to do the show, i said, you know, im an actor. If i go take that gig, that would be the first thing that i would do on my career thats not acting. Having been on comedy central, having a character, he himself was somewhat removed from the audience, but when you are the host of a late Night Show, youre present in some of the most intimate situations in peoples lives. ThAt Takes time to get comfortable with. I would like to do something with you. It is a new segment we are calling, big questions with even bigger stars. It was a little strange. People werent used to having colbert speak to them as him and not as the persona. So some of his fans werent very happy. When he first got to cbs, i think they told him we dont want you to be political. Youre going to be a Song And Dance man and give them whAt They want. A lot of my emotional state is how do you do this now . That was sort of the emotional state. You could see that. I just didnt know how to use me. During expedia travel week, save 20 or more on thousands of hotels. Expedia. It matters who you travel with. Getting to The Daily Show was an interesting journey for me. I was touring in europe. My phone rang. It was an american number i had no clue. I answered it and The Voice on the other side said hi, trevor, this is Jon Stewart. I host a little show called The Daily Show in america. I think youd be a good addition to the show. I said oh, thats really wonderful, but no thank you. And he said so youre saying no . Okay. I didnt expect that. I mean, in hindsight, that was the dumbest thing i could have ever done. Were really delighted that youre going to be joining us. I know that you flew in yesterday from south africa. Yeah, i just flew in. And boy are my arms tired. Okay. Okay. All right there. Oldie but a goodie. Very nice. No, no. Seriously. Ive been holding my arms like this since i got here, yeah. I never thought id be more afraid of police in america than in south africa. It kind of makes me a little nostalgic for the old days back home. I came back a little later, maybe a month or two later, and i did it again. And then he announced he was leaving. After Jon Stewart, we did not have an air place. Executives are scared. They want to get it right instantly. They want it to be a hit right now. Interested in an everyday thing. Amy poehler was on our list, but we actually had real discussions with Amy Schumer and we blinked on John Oliver and let him go to hbo. When discussions were going around about who would host the show, Jon Stewart said to me i think you should do it. Thats when the whirlwind began. Trevor had done very little up to that point. He had only done a couple of daily show spots. I said yeah, ill put my name in the hat. I thought there was no chance in hell i would be chosen to host it. But He Juszczyk seemed to are the intelligence, the poise, a point of view, a grasp of global politics, and he just felt like he could do it. Growing up in the Dusty Streets of south africa, i never dreamed that i would one day have, well, two things really. An indoor toilet and a job as host of The Daily Show. So when i got to The Daily Show, the first and most important thing for me to do was not crash the white peoples car. Jon stewart was coming into their Living Room every single night. And now there is some random south african who is walking into your Living Room who you didnt invite you didnt vote for, you didnt get to choose. Now seeing this is my first show, we wanted to start it off with something a little light. So here we go. Syria. Im sure Trevor Noah struck a lot of people as a gigantic missed opportunity. I mean very talented guy, but not even an american guy. There was articles written At The time, they should just cancel The Daily Show. I remember having a conversation with him, trevor, arent you nervous . He said hey, if this all doesnt work out, i can just fall back on poverty. Isnt thAt The best response . It was a firestorm the likes of which ive never experienced. The most important thing for me i was never trying to be a clone of Jon Stewart. And i think thats one of the things jon liked about me. One thing i really pushed was getting The Daily Show online. John did not care about having the show be online. I said why . Where are we on facebook . Where are we on instagram . Where are we on twitter . For me it was great. Now we can interact with a larger audience. And with it comes more responsibility because ive learned to have a show that was authentically funny because it gave a voice to people who were funny from different waublks of life. When i look at John Oliver and Samantha Bee and Trevor Noah, they all got to go to a thing i like to call Jon Stewart university, learning from the guy who pioneered one of the greatest late Night Talk shows of all time. When the late Night Landscape really changed 2014, 2015, people that werent american thAt Took over late night, Trevor Noah, John Oliver, Samantha Bee. When youre outside of the united states, you can almost see the united states better than the united states can see itself. Our main Story Tonight is government surveillance. John oliver is giving an actual Concluding Argument of a prosecutor. Hes made the case and he is summing it up for the jury. And i realize most people would rather have a conversation about literally any other topic, including is my farther phone giving me cancer to which the answer is probably. Or do goldfish suffer from depression to which is answer is yes, but very briefly. Whats going on those shows like The Daily Show and John Oliver and Samantha Bee is investigative comedy every bit investigative journalism and that is not something late Night Television used to be. This is hard for me. I never thought i would be standing on a stage. Oh, god. If i had to describe Samantha Bee in like three words, it would be fearless, important, boss. Donald trump forgot to bring his nouns to the debate. Samantha bee was a Beach Comedy Comedian in toronto. She was at The Daily Show for over ten years. Her comedic timing, her pov, her body language. I am female as [ bleep ]. We needed a Womans Perspective in late night that was that ascerbic and biting and hilarious. And i like that. All of these folks are really honing all of these skills, because they are skills. Its an art form. Everybody thinks its easy, and it really isnt. And there is stephen, just foundering, and it was bad. Thanks, boomer. Lets do this. He did a show after the Super Bowl in order to enhance his exposure. But it just didnt work. After every Super Bowl, i like to work off some of the Nacho Weight by tossing around the old pigskin. There was zero sustained bump for cbs executives, that was like okay, we really have a problem here. Brandnew flat scrv was an actual squirrel. Leave it. Already more than 1000 5 star reviews. By garnier, naturally. I became a Sofi Member because i needed to consolidate my credit card debt. I needed just one simple way to pay it all off. It was an easy decision to apply with sofi loans, just based on the Interest Rate and how much i would be saving. There was only one that stood out and one that actually made sense and that was sofi personal loans. It felt so freeing. I felt like i was finally out of this neverending trap of interest and payments and debt. Ladies and gentlemen, Craig Ferguson Craig ferguson followed David Letterman on cbs for ten years, and craig left a little unexpectedly. I had done more than that, i probably wouldnt have quit. Thats when the real fun began. The year of transition, making decisions about who was going to take the 12 30 slot was one of the single most challenging Things Id ever faced. The wide world thinks here is an opportunity to finally name a woman. Amy poler . Tina fey . There were conversations about women. I am a woman. I was wanting to have a woman in late night. But James Corden is a unicorn. I saw him on broadway. Laugh out loud funny. You knew this was somebody special. He had a little bit more of a global feel, and we thought maybe that can translate to a bigger international audience as well. Hello, everyone. I know what youre thinking. Oh, look, the directors got his own show. I remember there were headlines out here saying who the f is James Corden . However shocked you are that i am doing this job, you will never be as shocked as i am. We had been on the air a month and i couldnt get back in the building because the guy didnt know that we were even making a show here. And just over there on the side of the studio there is like a huge billboard that says the late late show with James Corden with my face on it. I was saying no, no. Look. You know, thats where we were starting from. One change that coincided with James Arrival was how significant pushing digital content was. We said we dont want to make a show thats for 12 37 at night. Were going to look At The Prime Time shows as our competition. Were going the look at Breakfast News as our competition. So we needed to control relevancy. The way the do that was to make pieces that could travel around on the internet and then people could find and watch in chunks. We were like what can we do . We are in los angeles. All everyone seems to talk about is the traffic. Is there a thing where we pick people up to help james get to work and whats the biggest singers in the world and we sing along to their songs the way people sing along in the morning on the radio. And we went carpool karaoke. And we went that is a thing. Never mind, ill find someone like you it was inconceive to believe me thAt That would be the most viewed Clip Online in the history of late Night Television ever. You are here. And im terrified. James cordens Arrival On American Television changed the truly changed the way people watched and consumed late night for all time. There was a feeling at cbs that Stephen Colbert was dragging down James Corden, that James Corden could be even bigger if he was on before Stephen Colbert. And they were talking about flipping those shows. Fallon was killing him in the young adulteratings, and even beating him among total viewers. By march 2016, Stephen Colbert had told me he was just so exhausted. His life was just miserable. Were working longer hours than ever, and the only break most of us get is a little extra sleep on the weekends, which i use to stress dream about work. I just think he wasnt comfortable. So cbs said we need to get him a Show Runner so stephen can concentrate on the comedy. And so cbs executives set up drinks up for Colbert And Chris lecht. I knew chris from morning news. Chris was a welcome rival, a very talented guy. And the deal they make is chris not tell stephen how to do comedy, chris will not still stephen out to produce a show. Its greAt To be back because i miss these people. One of the greAt Things that chris brought to us is he has a brilliant eye for process and keeping people in their own lanes. And once we knew how to do that, we can start doing the show that we wanted to do. The show looked better. It has rhythm, and personally, stephen is outraged by the things going on in politics, particularly Donald Trump. He did start to find his footing with the political conventions of 2016. I have arrived At The 2016 republican national hungry for power games. He had a character that was a sendup of Stanley Tuccis Character from the hunger games. The Red Carpet is here to hide the Rivers Blood that will eventually flow down from the cornucopia. That was stephens sweet spot. So he brings back point of view comedy, and Jimmy Fallon doesnt do that. Thank you, president obamas birth certificate. You used to carry it around to prove he is american. Now he needs to carry it around to prove he is only 54. What . Jimmy fallon i think his appeal is that he is not challenging. Sometimes we just want to hang out with our goofy Little Brother and like play goofy games. I like riding the waves and really experiencing all of it. To have the sitting President Of The United States do a bit with you, you know, its a big deal. I wrote him this bit where were talking about rihanna, and i wanted to go work, work, work, work. He says why do you want me to say it like that . He goes why cant i say it like work, work, work, work, work. I said stop it, you have two months left. Dont mess it up. Work, work, work, work, work and thats it, and you go oh, yeah, drop the mic. Well be right back with more of the Tonight Show. The summer of 2016, Jimmy Fallon is a very sort of joyful, relatable person. Ah but hes sort of At Sea in this climate because hes not a political animal like Stephen Colbert. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Donald Trump. When trump came in, suddenly this guy that was having all this Fun Wasnt really in his element anymore. Can i mess your hair up . Moren just a building. Its an aipowered Investment Firm with billiondollar views. A cuttingedge datasecurity enterprise. Yes, with a slide. A perfect location for the worlds first onehour delivery. Its been incredible. Its in the throes of the 2016 president ial election, and Jimmy Fallon does what every late Night Host has done for decades. One of the major candidates Come On his show, and the make the person look kind of fun and playful can i mess your hair up . But what Jimmy Fallon did not understand was thAt The rules of late night had changed. Go ahead. People point to the moment where Jimmy Fallon mussed trumps hair as this pivotal moment of fallon humanizing trump. I think that people were definitely angry At The idea of having him on. Jimmy fallon faces criticism he never had before and his rating starts to slide. Is there anything to you people giving you a hard time for being too soft on trump with your yeses . I am never too hard have. You seen my show . Im never too hard on anyone. Vote. Vote, vote, vote. In less than 24 hours, the election will be over. Thank god Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah, they decide to do live election Night Shows. I remember thinking Hillary Clinton is going to become president and it will be the most boring time in politics. Welcome to my live Election Night special on showtime. I am your host, Stephen Colbert. Well also be getting updates on the results from around the country. They are calling the state of ohio for Donald Trump. He was winning all the counties that mattered. He was winning the electoral college. Trump won florida. What i was trying to do that night was capture just the frustration or the stress of the country. WhAt The is happening . Were like oh, Donald Trump is going to be the president. Any good news . You can smoke weed in massachusetts. I remember thinking wow, its real now. That moment for me when The Daily Show with Trevor Noah started. You can be dejected. You can be sad. I will say this. Dont let it turn into fear because thats the thing that Donald Trump has used to get his side to do something they never should have done. We did 14 live shows. Or something before we ever did the live election Night Show. So we were ready for that night in every way, other than what happened. And so when Chris Licht breaks this news to stephen thAt Trump has won, chris tells him just be yourself. So how did our politics get so poisonous . I think its because we overdosed, especially this year. We drank too much of the poison. And what stephen did was what late Night Hosts have become accustomed to do, talk us through how to deal with something that we might not be comfortable with. Get out there. Kiss a democrat. Go hug a republican. Give a libertarian a reach around. I dont care. The election is over. You survived. Good night and may god bless america. When the show was over, chris said that was raw. That was real. I said it was absolutely emotionally true. Now i know how to do this show. My mom was in india At The time, and she called me to ask me, hey, am i going to be able to get back into the country. There were a lot of people telling me hey, man, dont worry. Trump is not going to ban all muslims, i dont know, man. Thats my mom. I need her back home because i love her. She owes me 300. Barbara boxer, who came on my show after the election, we thought we were going to be celebrating. And we we i could barely keep it together. I guess the message that i want to spread out to other women is exactly what youre saying is not to give up. Sorry. I hate crying. We were all stunned, and it was so many people to this day come up to me and say god, it was so nice to see Somebody Else in so much pain the day after that happened. Mr. Trump, your presidency, I Love Your presidency, i call it disgrace the nation. Watching Stephen Respond to what was happening in the country was one of the happiest moments of my life. Hey, senate, my dog accomplished more than you this week when it rolled over and licked its nuts. Today if youre not talking about politics in a tough and insightful way, youre losing viewers. And this would be arguably the inverse of what it was like during the carson era. Last night of the biggest Mass Shooting in the united states history. As a record thats been set twice in just the two and a half years that ive been living in america. These hosts are part of the political and cultural conversation. Lilly singh coming from youtube with 14 Million fans and counting, who already love her, who already want her style of comedy. Its not just about putting a square peg into a round hole, no. The chinese government recently shut down the countrys most popular lesbian Dating App. A lesbian Dating App is like a regular Dating App except you swipe like this. So for half a century, the gatekeeper for late night was a broadcast network, and that is just not the case anymore. You find your own Gate And Break through it. Today im proud to announce ill be forming an Exploratory Committee to be the first guest on Desus And Mero. Thats right. Were two regular dudes from The Bronx. We just get more Human Interviews from people. Mmhmm. Whats the retail on this . 45. 4,500. Okay. Two honda civics in the box. Its a flex. Youre not a big flexor . No. Most late Night Hosts, its just one person doing their one thing. But weve got two, and their chemistry and their ability to riff off Each Other catapulted them into need to hear commentary. For season two, we had to do it the right way and bring in the mother [ bleep ] m. J. Of late night. David letterman in the house. Theres no better proof that Desus And Mero have touched a real creative nerve than the fact thAt They booked David Letterman as a guest. The most respected guy in late night for breaking the form and doing original look. What would you like, maam . I told you, the three cheese now hes saying it about disea Desus And Mero. Is thAt The key to The Bronx . Yeah. Does that like open every door in The Bronx, or is that like a Metro Card . It opens a few. I thought these guys, this is it. This is the future. This is the way it ought to be. And it makes me so happy that it has come to pass that way for both of you. Bro wow, wow, wow. This is high praise. Thank you. So we kick off 2020, and the internet was preoccupied with trumps impeachment. Soon we will find out if breaking the law is illegal. And then out of the blue, late Night Television is hit with the most disruptive event in its entire history. The coronavirus has quickly turned from a regional concern in china to an international sensation. We started hearing about coronavirus in February 2020 as a thing, and everyone was saying, oh, its like the flu. Its not a big deal. Thats right. Japan has canceled school for a month. Quick, america, now is your chance to catch up in math. Come on. I went to our production team, and i said, hey, do you guys have an Emergency Backup Plan for, like, if we all have to go home or not have an audience . Steve allen started the original the Tonight Show. He was just playing piano. Thats whAt These shows used to be. Wow. And can be again. Thanks to coronavirus. Social distancing, pack your things and go just know that ill be waiting for you to come back to the show we thought we were just saying goodbye to the audience. We should have said goodbye to the studio. You play something, and ill have a sip of bourbon. You can stop now. Having those hosts on late night provides a sense of normalcy for a lot of people. But when theyre forced to shut down altogether, i think it really kind of shook americans. I live close to a hospital, and next to the hospital were these tents where they kept dead bodies because there was no more room in the morgue. It knocked the comedy out of me to see that. What got me back in was being, like, oh, well, if i feel this way, a lot of other people feel this way. So id better get back to work. Im in a room in my house. My Camera Operator is my wife. Hi. Hi, honey. Thank you for doing this. Shoutout To Youtubers who have been doing this for a long time and making us pros look like real dopes this week. The internet was what late night was, which is experimental. It forces you to find new ways to be funny. Oh, come in. Andy, yeah. Oh, good to see you, buddy. We were challenged to make the show in a new way. If im going to cut my hair in my own house, i want the authentic black barbershop. Look at what else i got. You could see as each episode goes, the Video Quality gets better. The sound quality gets better. So what covid did was it pushed forward the evolution of late Night Television. Frannie, do you want to play the drums . No. Okay. Perfect. Theres a much more intimate feel, a connection. My first guest tonight, as you can see, is mr. Bubble. Goodbye, everybody. And that is bringing together the Streaming Era with the whole history of late night. Dr. Fauci, thank you so much for joining us on the daily Social Distancing show. How are you . Im very well, thank you, noah. Very well. It became clear that late Night Hosts realized it was their civic duty to put out correct information about what was going on with the pandemic because it wasnt going to happen from the white house. Looks like by april, you know, in theory, when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away. I hope thats true. People needed to know exactly whats going on, how to protect themselves. This is not it either. This aint it. This aint it. Its supposed to go over your nose and your mouth. Late night was really kind of giving us a chance to still have a sense of humor about things despite the fact that it was so serious. Sam jackson with a new poem, and take it away, sam. Well, were back after ten days off, and i never imagined that after ten days, a global pandemic would not be the lead story. George floyds death At The hand of Minneapolis Police officers has sparked angry protests all across the country tonight. George floyd and Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery to me, these events are just as tragic as 9 11, but they happen a lot more frequently than 9 11. In those times, you dont necessarily need the comfort that comedy provides. You need an adult to say, this is what is happening to you, and it is okay for you to feel this way about it. I dont know what made that video more painful for people to watch. The fact that were watching someone being murdered by someone whose job is to protect and serve or the fact that he seemed so calm doing it, you know . That video was just trevors thoughts and feelings on this horrifying thing that happened. And i thought it personally was like the best way we could have covered it. Just going, no, what happened here was wrong, was wrong. This person got murdered on camera. And late Night Hosts do have a way of validating your grief in these moments of tragedy. Its real, and its justified, and its really happening. When you look At The genesis of late night, Carson Wasnt expected to make statements about whatever horrible event, but that has become the role of the late Night Host in todays society. Its time to get uncomfortable and look at all these things people were too Big A Wuss to look at. As a white man, i Cant Speak of The Deep Rooted and justified fear africanamericans have when encountered by police, so here is late Night Writer Amber ruffin. So once when i was a teenager, i was brandnew to driving, and there is an old white cop. And he goes, pull the car over pull the goddamn car over right now, [ bleep ] there are certain things you never do because It Chills the audience. But, like, i learned thAt Telling the Truth Isnt one of them. And i think this is how i die. This man is going to kill me. And so when were all as a country talking about black Lives Matter and police brutality, we are seeing late Night Hosts having to reconcile that as well. And i realize that I Cant not say im horrified and im sorry and im embarrassed. They had something to learn, and they tried to learn it in real time in front of us all on national television. Are you tired of your white friends interrupting your busy day with questions about Race Relations . Late night is so important in having these conversations in a humorous way. Program to absorb all the emotional labor of helping your wellmeaning but painfully white pals. So if people watched that sketch and they laughed about it, awesome. Thats the goal. But if they then talked about whats going on in the country, even better. After i say no justice, you say no peace. No justice. No bees im sorry. Is it what is it . Im sorry. The Trump Era turned a lot of Comedy Writers into activists. So you want to be a supreme Court Justice . Do you think you have what it takes to be on my supreme court, send in an Audition Tape explaining how you plan to undo three laws. If Jimmy Fallon is Doing Trump jokes now, something has changed. Just swing for the fences and see how many lives you can ruin. Supposing we hit the body with a tremendous whether its ultraviolet or just very powerful light. The beginning of 2020, i wanted to have a fiveminute late Night Set. That was my goal. But watching trumps Coronavirus Task Force meetings, i was so frustrated with the level of incompetence that was on display. People nodding and calling him sir and pretending like all of this was normal. And so i just said, i have to do this. And then i said, supposing you brought the light inside the body, which you can do, either through the skin or in some other way. I said, instead of Making Fun of him, lets expose him. Lets expose the incompetence. This is the antidote to gaslighting. Please welcome to The Late Show, sarah cooper. Its so nice to meet you. Its the funniest thing. How did you come up with the idea for it . I didnt expect that my first fiveminute late Night Set is going to be me guest hosting jimmy kimmel. If you dont know who i am, thats okay. I dont know who you are either, so were even. In 2020, late night expanded tremendously. It gave it new avenues and new reach and many new voices. President trump attended a Campaign Rally in florida last night, said covid19, oh, my god, same. Nbc giving Amber Ruffin her own show with the launch of Streaming Network Peacock was perfect timing, especially with the leadup to the 2020 election. My approach to making the Amber Ruffin show was i want a late Night Set. Im going to look like a late Night Guy and i want to do a moon oh log. It was revealed last week that President Trump is currently 421 Million in debt. Everything else can break the form. Ive got 20 more than the president the election has made us all feel crazy, and we at my show have kind of taken it upon ourselves to stop people from feeling gaslit. What could go wrong again . On Election Night in 2020, we knew thAt Trump would never concede even if he lost. This is how im doing. Its stressful. We werent sitting with balloons in the Ceiling Waiting to drop them. Wait. I dont understand. Roy, if one of those bottles is urine and one is tequila, how come theyve both gone down . I cant tell the difference, man. I lost my sense a couple days ago, so ive just been hitting both of them. We also knew we werent going to figure out who won At The end of the night. I was looking At ThAt Tv, and i was completely catatonic im catatonic after four long, tense days, cnn projects Joseph R. Biden jr. Is elected the 46th President Of The United States. Hes our next president. After the election, late night didnt give up on politics because trump didnt give up the white house. Were going to walk down to the capitol. Late Night Hosts for four years, theyve been telling people in their Comedy Way thAt This was crazy, but it was also menacing. There was a menace to it. Hes just chipping away At These things we believed in, you know. Truth, justice, and the american way. I think a lot of late night did become this, like, resistance watching for viewers. Thank you for joining us for the Treason Finale of the Donald Trump era. Hey, republicans who supported this president , have you had enough . Stop saying this is not who we are and start asking, what can i do to change it . I, joseph robinette Biden Jr. , do solemnly swear can i first just say its so nice to talk about trump in past tense . Feels great. Was, was, was, was, was. I dont know what late nights going to laugh at when Joe Biden gets sworn in as president. Joe bidens middle name is robinette . What . Late night adapts with our culture. Joseph r. Biden took the oath of office with his hand on what appeared to be the bible directors cut extended edition. There was a time where late night was really all about making you laugh. Joe biden blow my brains out. Now late night has evolved into this space where its not just jokes. If the job of late Night Television is to encompass Humor And Satire about the issues of the moment, youre going to have to comment on social justice, on race, on lgbtqia issues, on womens rights. 867 increase on hate. It has to be such a personal endeavor because thats what comedy is. Its so personal, and your point of view is so specific. Then where was mr. Texas while his constituents are suffering . Well, there he is on a plane. Snake on a plane right there. To be tremendously cliche, its like laughing to keep from crying. You know what i mean . I think the future of late night is not necessarily late or at night. There will be a lot more shows. None of them will dominate. With different formats and more diverse hosts. I mean real talk. If you put every network late Night Host in one room together and then add me and hasan minhaj, we look like the i. T. Department At The Law Firm of theres still room for everybody. I believe my last words were thAt There must be a better way of Making A Living than this. Well, i have looked. We can all embrace that moment where we figure out whAt The next chapter is. Sis boom ba. Sis boom ba. Describe The Sound made when a sheep explodes. No matter what form it is, whAt The competition is, the late Night Show will always be important, will always go on. Hi. Hi. How you doing . Good. Why did you bring me here . Um [ laughter ] you brought us here. Oh, thats right. So what do you think about like do you hear grownups talking about race or things . Like maybe with politics and stuff. Yeah. Like people from different places
