What are you . Do people ask you that sometimes . Yeah. But i would just say american, asian and i guess just jewish. What are you made up of . Black and white people. I say like american. Im like mixed. Is it ever hard . Do you feel like you have to choose one side over the other . No. I dont think that is real. Like we dont really have to do that. Its its probably not much different from being just like one race. I dont really know. Those are all good answers. This is mattie and saki. And they shouldnt feel bad because the adults dont know whAt To make of this Race Thing either. Race has confounded the United States since the United States invented it. And get ready because around 2045, for the first time, this country will have more black, indigenous and people of color than just plain old white folks. But what does that mean . To quote my young friends, i dont really know. Every now and again, a year comes up on the calendar that sparks the national imagination. 1976, 1984, 2000. Its an emergency we all hope doesnt happen. Well, for many people, 2045 is that kind of number. That is the year, according to the u. S. Census, that america will be a Majority Minority nation. That bleens black, indig louse, Latin X and asian folks will outnumber the white folks. As my friend put it its the browning of america. And that has white people freaking out. Okay. Not all the white people. The Tiki Torch whites, the Bill Balol whites, the not my daughter whites, the storm the capitol whites. Those people mean things will instantly get better for us and worse for them. They think we will team up and Reboot Slavery with a whole new cast. But we dont have to wonder whats going to happen. Its happening now. In cities that are already Majority Minority like detroit, houston, atlanta and even in the birthplace of america itself. This is philadelphia. The city of brotherly love. Where our founding fathers met, wrote and signed the Declaration Of Independence while the people they owned waited outside anxious about the news because that document was also going to give them their independence. Philadelphia is already a Majority Minority city. What does that mean in reality . West philadelphia, some of you are already singing the strong in your head. A Majority Black Residential Area where half the businesses are blackowned. It is one of the most ethnically diverse places in the country. There is a corridor known as 52nd street. It is a Mie You Version of What Philadelphia in general is like. Very harsh race lines. You can be in a black community. A ten minute walk, you are in a completely different community. Born and raised in West Philly, Ant Smith is a prominent activist in the community. As a teacher and as one of the lead organizers with the Philadelphia Coalition for economic, legal justice. Aka, Philly For Real justice. When you got out, nobody was there for you. Ant was named one of the most influential people in philly. But generally speaking, this area and a large portion of philly is like the entire black is here. But then of course there is a large movement of white transients from a bunch of other places. So it creates a lot of tensions. So is this the West Philly that Will Smith was talking about . I mean, im sure it was at some point in time. Yeah. But i think i feel like Will Smith had it a little bit easier. It feels a little more drastic these days. Its crazy, man. We have talked about this before. In america, ethnically diverse almost always equals super segregated. Most of phillys black residents live here on the west side. To the north and south, you find the majority of the 35 white populus. But here in the middle, thats the heart of phillys diversity, made up of black, indigenous, Latin X and a bunch of other folks, even white people jumbled together but expanding into phillys historically Black And White cities, turning this Black And White cookie into, i guess, a snicker doodle. For a city like philly with historic and legendary race problems, they dropped the bomb on black people in a black neighborhood. Im not here for that. That would be divisive. The population of black, indigenous and people of color, aka bypop folks over taking the white folks aint the kumbaya some may think it would be. But before we get into the racism piece, lets talk about race. Race is a construct. People like to say race is a social construct. We like to speak as if race doesnt matter. When i think about race, i think about race as a way that society has characterized people really for the purpose of instituting power and to protect privilege. Dr. Blay. Her brook, one drop shifting the Lens Of Race challenged the diversity of what it means to be black in america. This aint her first time talking on tv. In a lot of ways, when we talk about race, we conflate race with skin color, so we think that whiteness is about people that look white. Blackness is about people that look black. But that wasnt how it was defined at its origin. When we look At The history of race and i think about the ways whiteness, for example, was defined. Whiteness was defined as pure. Meaning that At The time when folks were defining race, they were trying to Imbun Blackness with a certain level of Evil And Bar barrism is all it would take was that one drop to automatically ruin the purity and the sanctity of whiteness. If were looking back five generations to see who is in your family, so long as there is no one who is not white in those generations, then you can be identified or categorized as white. On the other hand, if we look back and see anyone five generations ago, your great great great Great Grandparent is black, then you, too, are black. That is the mark, right . Yeah. That is the thing that makes that person black. Whether or not they look black or not. So Whiteness Hasnt been about what you look like. Its been about who allows you to be white. Yeah. And to me thats sort of the ridiculousness of the one drop rule, is that even if you are saying supremacy, obviously. You are saying white is the best thing, that one drop of blackness can ruin all that whiteness. Yeah. In a way that actually you are stripping yourself of power. Sure. Because the white was supreme. You would have to count it down to the drop. When youre talking about the browning of america, its like were talking about folk who is are mixed race and by racial and people of color and were all looking at ourselves. Were all thinking about other people and whiteness is over here untouched. Were not the problem. Its whiteness. So when you talk about White Supremacy, were talking about spectrum of power with whiteness At The top, blackness At The bottom. All kinds of colors in between. See, if im close to whiteness, that means im better than you other dark skinned negros, right . That i will have more access to power and privilege. Im not just talking about white people. We know that youre black, yes. But do not act as if your Light Skin gives you access to privilege. People say, im black, just like you. No, youre not. In the same way were asking white folks to acknowledge their privilege. If we really want to dismantle White Supremacy, we have to be willing to push back against privilege. People have to be willing to give up some privilege. But you have to be first to recognize the privilege that you have. The new samsung galaxy s21. This looks different. It is. Show me. Just hit record see that . Yourre filming in 8k. Thats cinema quality. So. You can pull photos straight from video. Impressive. But will it last the whole trip . Youll have battery all day. Nothing is everything. Man Phone it in . Way ahead of you. Daddys saving money. burke go ahead, Phone It in. We are farmers. Bumpadum, bumbumbumbum lets get one thing straight as we talk about the realities of race in america. Racial categorization has nothing to do with science. Nothing at all. When scientists map the human genome, they found lots of stuff. But not race. There is no Gene Or Cluster of genes common to any one race. Thats why you will see the categories continue to change as more and more people say, hey, what about us . And, look, before 1960, you couldnt even pick your own race on the census. Until then, a person showed up at your door, looked at you and picked your race for you. And native folks, uhnuhn, they werent even on the census until eight decades in because america. But while race isnt real buy logically, it is a powerful social construct, a human made some of categorization. As we all know, these categories have real affects in the world. Those affects are called racism. Just two friends, two friends that our government consider white. Even though we all know that makes no sense. On the u. S. Census, there is no official category for anyone who is from a part of the world we usually call the middle east. They can check white or the category some other race. Which means their community is losing access to resources and power. They are two Arab Americans who want to redefine the era for the community that some call middle East North african. They prefer Swana Or Southwest asian north african. I love philadelphia. Okay. Because it is a Majority Minority city. And its exactly where i want to be because of that. I feel like there are more voices represented here in philly. And i do feel more understood here. When people say the arab world, they really mean they dont just mean arabs. It when somebody says the arab world, they mean persian people who are not arab, right . Im ghlad were getting righ into details. I have had this conversation before about the idea there is a con census for the u. S. Government. All it is is whAt The u. S. Government decided is worth the category. It is not scientists discovered these are the races. Its not that. It is just what is worth the category. As you know, there is a category that you could put in that white pox. Yeah. With polish, irish, egyptian. Yeah, swiss. Why do you think that swana people got access to whiteness when if i was to meet you in The Street i wouldnt be like look At This white lady. People who consider themselves arabs started immigrating to the United States in the 1870s. They had the currency of christianity, though. And being from the holy land, palestine going for them. The Naturalization Act of 1970 required thAt To become a citizen, you must be a free White Person. So arabs in this time, if they were able to pass as white worked their way into assimilating into the middle class. And it wasnt until 1952 that you would be a naturalized citizen without discrimination. So what do you do when that box comes up . Like, i mean panic, first of all. You know, i am an american. I was born here. I didnt grow up here. I grew up in kuwait with a White American mother that comes with tons and tons of privilege. So i come here and i have to see how im perceived. And the number one way im perceived is people walking up to me saying, what are you . Which is to me the biggest indicator of why i cannot check that white box. Because youre asking me. I have i have checked off asian. I have checked off other. And sometimes when writing middle eastern. But it would be great if there is a swana category. You found out when you check that box you dont get access to the privilege. Do you think some people do . They check The Box like, maybe this will if people didnt think that way, skin lightening Scream Wouldnt be such a big industry. Oh, yeah. Theyre peddle because none of the people in the Swana Region with seen as white anyway. I followed an ad growing up and i got confused by why would people use this . Why would you want to put Chemical Bleach on your skin to look like a different person . And im happy to say a lot of that has cascaded away, no pun intended. Its like, theyve lightened up on it. That white box on the census is a trick bag. Checking it may mean for about the lack of a good category for you than the fact that you are white. What about the people that fit into that box whether they want to or not . Im talking about the people that pass for white. Do i leave all those troubles bhund and go get a lowinterest bank loan. Lisa is an Author And Editor living in northWest Philly. So my question is, if you are asked to identify yourself, what do you say in those situations . Well, if push came to shove for any reason, i would say black. But because of how i look, my choices are different. And some people would say, why dont you just say youre white . And i cant do that. Yes. You are asked by your experience to come to terms with the difference between your internal selfidentification and the external one. There are black people who will treat me as a White Person until i drop a little hint. Uhhuh. A little something something. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like that. And if i do that enough, then they start to wonder, who is this person . Yeah. I understand thAt The world interacts with me and sees me as white 99 of the time. Yeah. But you need to embrace this part of you. Thats the part that needs to be stood up for. Its how the world is going to see you. It is the part that needs to be protected and defended. That is housed in a form thAt The world reads as white and accords privilege as a result of it. To pretend thats not happening or to deny that is, i think, unreal. And what are your parents races . Dad black. Mom white. Dad black and mom white. Dad Light Skinned, if you hadnt guessed. I mean, first of all, i have become aware of a couple things. One, the dna is an amazing thing thats unpredictable. So as dark as i am, my wife is white and i have a daughter who is about your complexion. I was like, oh, youre going to find out that you have the option to pass. Yeah. Yeah. And thats, i think, part of what i internalized. Even though my parents didnt talk about it, my parents didnt talk about race. My mom was this woman from the South Side of the chicago when her neighborhood was all white. My dad was from the rural south. Jim crow. His father wasnt the black doctor. He was the Nigger Doctor in town. So when they got together here in philadelphia, my dad was the one who went to the library to look up and see if there were still laws against interracial marriage. But they didnt talk about it with us. Once my mom asked my dad if she should subscribe to Ebony Or Jet and have it on the Coffee Table because what does she know . And he just laughed at her. I would be like, thanks for the ask. Yeah. Yeah. You got your new customers they get our best deals. You got your existing customers they also get our best deals. Everyone. Gets. The deals. Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name and theyre always glad you came you wanna be where you can see ahah our troubles are all the same ahah you wanna be where everybody knows your name you wanna go where people know welcome back, america. It sure is good to see you. The Fear Mongering rhetoric around the socalled browning of america claims to threaten the status quo, whiteness and White Supremacy. One white identity that consistently captured americas imagination, Italian American. And historically philly has been home to a large Italian American community. But gentrification doesnt just push out black folk. Now new philadelphia struggles with its identity as an Italian American stronghold. And nothing symbolizes it better than this, the statue of Christopher Columbus on The Box as many Philly Residents are saying they have no interest in celebrating a colonizer. Maybe we can ship him back to italy. Does anybody still got the Rec Receipt . So now columbus is in a box. WhAt To do . I asked a local italian journalist for his opinion. So youre italianamerican. Yes. Yes, yes, yes. Jason peters. I never really loved like the italianamerican thing. Like most of it is just watching goodfellas. But there are nuggets to be proud of. It is an immigrant story. You were discriminated against. But theyre coopting the language they have been hearing like Identity And Culture and theyre going, why doesnt that matter to me . And then they have to find their thing. So you search for that wherever you can get it, whether you all of a sudden are wearing an italian flag and standing in front of a Columbus Statue or become a fifa guy. A lot of wheat parttime just shut up and start watching soccer for some reason. I like grills and i like soccer. Thats who i am now. How has South Philly changed from when you were a kid. It did g from obama to trump. These were people that were, i guess, conservative democrats and then they didnt get whAt They wanted from that. And now theyre very mad. Because its a combination of fear and resentment. The fear is that you will be left behind and that you dont matter, which is you get that as a White Person. You start the feel like you are getting left behind in the culture. Is it also thAt The city is getting browner and blacker. The problem is the bar is set so high with White Supremacy that in order for things to get a little equal, we will have to lose some stuff, and thats whats making everybody upset. Its a general fear of change, of people of different colors and thAt They will be forgotten. I hate that i always feel like im snitching on my whites, like im the big Race Traitor. Its a good thing to be a Race Traitor if you are a White Person. Historically West Philly was an enclave for white immigrants. These Days Everybody is cooking. When we look At The market, it is a place where folks who are undocumented, refugees, recently arrived can find a place to grow, have a business and be able to provide for their family. Whats interesting about this area is that we think there is diversity there and that everyone is necessarily getting along, which is not always the case. Michelle ortiz is a Rebound Artist who represents marginalized people whose histories are often lost. Capturing the tensions and struggles of racial identity has been inspired by her own experiences loifing in south fill philly. I grew up on this block, so this isnt weird to me because we do this often on our block. Nice. My mother is originally from columbia. And my mother is from puerto rico. And they met here in philadelphia. They settled and bought the house that i was raised in in 1975. And then i purchased the house across The Street. Thats amazing. Thats like someone that doesnt you dont feel like that happens anymore. But it happens in South Philly. You find that a lot of families that are like, my cousin lives here or my mom lives here, it is a very South Philly thing. When you live in a neighborhood long enough, i have been here 40 years, i have been able to witness things that remain the same and things that have changed. Sometimes i get little flash backs of when my son is playing because we were literally like the same boundaries i had as a child where i was like, okay, dont pass thAt Tree, dont pass thAt Tree stump. I was like, oh, my gosh, that was me as a child. My son at age three started noticing our Skin Colors and started asking questions. Even though as a Light Skinned latina, same shade as some of the italians here. I would remember certain neighbors that just like hate from their eyes, like just did not want me to even ride past their house. And the first feeling is a sense of Anger And Rage of why are things the way thAt They are. But if im building a better life for my son, who is latino, then what is the environment that needs to change to feel thAt This is really, truly his home . I think were living at a moment right now where it is about seeing ourselves in one another and understanding that were all part of this like fabric that is our community here. The way we do it is new groups show up having to quickly figure out where they fall in the race rankings. Nancy is a vamerican. At her new school she has a Crash Course in americas racial inequities. Entering a High School in South Philly, there were a lot of tensions between asian students and black students. And At The time i didnt understand why. I was like, oh, they just discriminate against us. And i think like years of School Defunding have like less books, less resources and have enough teacher. Meanwhile, the immigrant students, we have our own floor because At The time South Philly have the best Esl Program in the whole city. Were talking about a neighborhood High School with very low resources. I just want to add so the reason i pointed to that is these are the immigrant students i ended up working with. Nancy cofounded an organization serving the vietnam students focussing on social justice. Ten years ago, when i started, it was a thing to convince the students that like White Privilege was the problem. Thats where we started. Yes, White Privilege exists. Then five years ago, the Starting Point with new young people coming in is like White Supremacy is the problem, right . Yeah. And then this last year with our latest cohort of people where theyre starting is we have to eAt The rich. Like theyre the problem. And im like, yes, absolutely. EAt The rich. And then where do you go from there . Because that whole saying of like people are never left unorganized organizes them first to understand the context of this country. You can organize them one way to understand thAt This country was founded on slavery and genocide. Or it is the other way that columbus discovered this country and you pick up your Boot Straps and bust off your Boot Straps if you put in 80 hours a week, everyone does this. So i do think it is an ongoing battle for ourselves with other communities, right . Yeah. And it is a battle with attacks from all sides because when the United States seeing a rising community leader, often there is an effort to neutralize that leader. Thats what happened to nancy when she went to virginia with a multiracial coalition to protest the then newly appointed director of ice tony pham. I think i have gotten the spotlight because i was arrested. Yes. By the ppd. Yes. Like why would you bring four Police Cars and six Police Officers and like come to my house without a warrant, by the way. There were littering charges . The charges were littering. Im saying this is excessive use of police form. What happened with the black uprising has always been about this. And when we win in these battles, like these battles that are being amazingly led by movement of the black lives, et cetera, right . But thats been the course of history of this country, which also is something our community doesnt understand because, guess what . Its not taught in schools. Whats not caught in schools. Civil Rights History in the right way, right . Sitting in philadelphia people like are africanamerican history is taught here but the majority of folks are white teachers. The idea that 20 years or so, america will be Majority Minority. I think a lot of times when certain members of the Media Talk about that or certain people talk about it, you are already laughing At The idea of, yeah, once white people are 49 of the country, everythings gonna be great finally. They only left out that for white people to be a minority thAt They need to assume all people of color are the same. And as you are saying, your experience in that school is exactly like proves it like we are pitted against each other to make sure were not on the same team. Thats an inside strategy. Yeah. Theyre pinning white people against this huge group. They see that, oh, this huge group is the group thats going to like take our power away. Why are you afraid . Your power is still there. It doesnt matter if its majority, minority in this country if the structures of power are in place. It is an ongoing battle against White Supremacy. The Belief System is so, you know, inherent in this country. And also capitalism. And also capitalism. And eAt The rich. Yeah, all those things. Never seen anything like it. Garnier brightening serum cream. Im obsessed with vitamin c. One product and it does it all. Yay, Spf Garnier brightening serum cream. Already more than 1000 5 star reviews. By garnier, naturally.
