It certainly stkdoes, and yo have the Election Interference and then the cyberware. How do you think he should handle this meeting, anna . I think he should handle it like Joe Biden. And one of the reasons people voted for Joe Biden is because he brings such Foreign Policy experience. He was chair of the Foreign Policy, the foreign Relationships Committee in the senate for many years. He knows who they are. He knows where these countries are and he knows where The Good Guys are and he knows where the bad ones are, and he knows how to maintain relationships with the allies and bring the foes to task. Democratic senator, joe manchin, says he thinks republicans will come around on some of bidens agendaite kwruplz. What do you think, bill, is that a realistic read of the gop . I think Senator Manchin is wishing, and it could be on infrastructure where Theres Interest where senators are getting a bill to help constituents, and rebuilding highways and bridges and so forth, and Voting Rights, which people are worried about, and i think rightly, and theres a test for President Biden and schumer and can they put together where they have a good Faith Effort to alter the bill and narrow it as to make it more acceptable to republicans, and you know, thats theres a big challenge coming up over the next two, three or four months on the hill. Its interesting watching how some of the other senators have been handling the filibuster. You look at Angus King of maine, he said hes reluctant but not in favor of ruling it out. I am very reluctant about it, but if it comes down to Voting Rights and the rights of americans to go to the polls and select their leaders versus the filibuster, i will choose democracy . Do you think Senator Manchin should be leaving the door open more like Angus King is . Regardless of what i think, i think manchin is telling us what hes going to do. Listen, hes the middle of the roader. He says, no matter what i will not vote for the filibuster. Joe biden and the democrats have to figure out how to go around that and what they are going to do it, and its going to take a lot more than what it will take Angus King to change joe manchin, and hes a crucial vote. I think he enjoys the fact that he is a crucial vote, and it comes with a lot of power, and theres no reason for him to put out this Oped Today except to say stop asking me, folks, im not moving, not budging, and this is where i am, will be and where i will stay. I spoke with her exclusively about the threats members of congress are facing today and the challenges in keeping them safe. Now as you evaluate the threat landscape, do you believe the biggest threat to america comes from within . I dont know that i would say the biggest threat comes from within, but domestic terrorism is certainly a concern. It is not a new issue. There have been for sometime violence that has occurred at Womens Health centers and animal Rights Activist and racially motivated extremism like the Ku Klux klan. What is heightened now is the political tensions within the country and the power of the internet that allows extremist, whether they are foreign radical jihadists or domestic extremists in the united states to connect with one another, to recruit, inspire, raise funds, radicalize or plan their operations, so i do think that that aspect regarding domestic terrorism is a new challenge that we face. The difference that we have here domestically that i did not have worry about with foreign terrorists is our fourth amendment protections that make it more challenging to identify terrorists within the united states. Have you seen an uptick in threats against members of congress since the insurrection . I would not say since the insurrection, but certainly in 2020 it began to go up considerably and it has remained heightened for a number of members. It has not since January 6th, it certainly predated January 6th. You have found theres an uptick throughout members of congress. How much has political rhetoric played a role in that . I think political rhetoric is a key driver of some of the anger that americans feel across the political spectrum towards elected officials. That rhetoric continues to this day . It does. How much does it complicate your role . It certainly keeps things interesting, and it means that there are continued threats, unfortunately, against a number of elected officials. Because of the political rhetoric and the heightened emotions . Because some americans choose to respond in that way, yes . I am concerned, you know we all have a right to express our political opinion and we have a right to express anger and frustration, not in a violent way, to those that have been elected to represent us and to make them understand thoughts and feelings regarding potential legislation, and thats inshrined in our constitution. I think what concerns me is a group of americans that have fallen for some Conspiracy Theories, and just some whacked out ideas that are not based in fact. Its not our job to prevent americans from becoming agitated and storming the capitol, but i can say with confidence if that were occur again, the next time we would be ready. District judge Roger Benitez of california, and he said the army swiss Knife And Ar15 are good for home and at battle. What do you make of this Judges Opinion . Yeah, you are right, pamela, and its good to see you. That Opening Sentence set the tone for the rest of his 94page ruling. He spent a lot of time minimizing the danger of Assault Weapons, and maximizing the importance of having personal security in the home. He said these kinds of Assault Weapons are not like machine guns, and they are not like bazookas. You are right, he compared them to a swiss Army Knife at one point, just anything an average person, as he said, would have in the average home for average purposes. It was intriguing, pamela, that he produced a lot of statistics about Home Invasions and murders and rapes, and those kinds of concerns that people in america might have as opposed to statistics for mass shootings. He said mass shootings, which are the kinds of things that california officials were actually trying to prevent with this assault Weapons Ban are actually quite rare, the judge said, but yet he emphasized the kinds of things that people might face in their home and want weapons for for personal defense. Lets look at The Big Picture here, what this all means, joan. The Supreme Court recently said it will take up an important second Amendment Case later this year. What is that case about and how can its ruling affect other Gun Regulations like californias . Thats right. It would take a case that would involve the kind of permits that people want to have a concealed handgun outside of the home. Com former president Donald Trump is back on the trail. In North Carolina he continued to push the Big Lie that the presid presidency was stolen from him. I am not The One trying to undermine american democracy. I am The One trying to save it. Trump is not alone. Republicans in 14 states have passed new laws making it harder to vote and they continue to push a partisan Election Audit in arizona all based on that same Big Lie. Hardly an effort to save democracy, as trump says. We turn to the 2000 election. After weeks of legal battles Al Gore ultimately accepted the results conceding to President Bush in a televised speech. I say to president elect bush, what remains a partisan rank must now be put aside and may god bless his stewardship of this country, and while i strongly agree with the courts decision, i accept it. I accept the finale of the outcome, and for tonight for the sake of our unity as a people and democracy, i offer my concession. Joining me now is Al Gores running mate in 2000, democratic former Vice President candidate, joe lieberman. Nice to see you on the show . Thanks, and good to be with you. Given all your experience, what is your reaction to how the former president and republicans are handling trumps Election Defeat . Well, that cape that you ran of Al Gore when he made his Concession Speech on december 13th, 2000, what we see every day including today from President Trump could not be more different. Basically, Al Gore put the interest of the country first. Our campaign told us after the u. S. Supreme court decision, Bush V gore, that we could go back to the florida Supreme Court, and Vice President gore to his great credit said its too late , if we do that, there will not be an ordinarily transition in our government and in the interest of the country, even though we find the Supreme Court decision to be terribly unfair and unprecedented, we have to do what is right for the country, and President Biden on the other hand lost the battles in court and still refuses to give up. I think hes really hurting our constitutional democracy by what hes doing and is hurting himself. How much damage do you think has been done . Well, i think the damage the reason i say first off, hes sort of incendiary, some of the things he said like the crazy business like he may become president again before the 2024 election, to do that you would have to do something that was totally outside of the constitution, and it would be the first time ever in our history of the country it would be changed and its not going to happen. A lot of his supporters are going to think if he says that it could happen, and its just a terrible thing that he has done. The reason i say its not what hes doing now, what President Trump is doing now, its not in his own interest. Okay, he has a passionate band of supporters on the republican primary list, and you saw it last year in the election, and he lost his selfdescribe moderates, a lot of who voted for him in 2016 and decided he didnt deserve another term. Its not just Donald Trump, right . You have seen republicans across the country in these 14 states so far making it harder to vote. They had seized on the Big Lie to create this opportunity to pass this legislation. What do you think that is doing to democracy, to this country . I think every one of those steps every one of those State Laws being put forward is an attack on our democracy, and remember at the heart of this system that the founders of america created, established so many years ago was the right of citizens to choose their leaders, not a king selected by a right of birth, but the voters. So that always seemed to me to be obvious that one of the great goals of our systems should be to encourage as many people to vote as we could, and now the republicans at the State Level are trying to cut back in a way what they are doing the restricted voting takes us back to the civil Rights Act and its the most serious attempt to limit the right of the people to vote, and i mention civil rights because in a lot of the things they are doing, africanamericans, and huh spanish americans, poor people, will be denied the right to vote and its pure politics. Again, think about the country, and think about why we love america and what we love about it, and part of it is that we all get to vote for the president and all the rest of our elected officials, and they are trying to stop that. I want to say one more word, pamela, and this is a wonderful statistics which the republican efforts will cut back. In 2000, when Al Gore and i ran, the poll for president was short of 1 million, and last year the total vote was 160 million, and i know the population went up in 20 years, but not that much and part of that was people voted by absentee because of the covid19 virus, but if that works to get more people to participate, why would you want to stop that . There has not been evidence of fraud in Absentee Ballots at all . Its insignificant. Any fraud that has been that is for sure less than 0. 001 . I want to ask you about cyberattacks. The u. S. Secretary of energy is warning that american adversaries have the capability to shut down the u. S. Power grid. This was an issue you were interested in when you were in the senate. You were waiving the flag saying this is a big deal, we need to be paying attention to this. How concerned are you with whats happening right now . Im very concerned, and everybody should be concerned because what we were worried about back in 20101112, Susan Collins and i introduced a Cybersecurity Legislation with exactly whats happened now with the colonial pipeline and the others. Well, sometime this month, the government will release the firstever unclassified report on ufos, unidentified flying objects, like this one. Its going against the wind 120 miles per hour west. While ufos dont necessarily equal aliens, weve seen a stunning turnaround from public officials in just these last few months. What was once considered a joke is now a part of the national security conversation. We have the professor of Physics And Astronomy at george mason university. He joins me now. It seems like everyones talking about this, professor. It seems like all of a sudden theres all this focus on this issue. And now u. S. Girls said there is no evidence that ufos are aliens, but theyre not telling us what they are. From a scientific standpoint, what is the most plausible explanation for these objects . Well, right now the most plausible explanation is there is no explanation. What we have to do is let the data tell us the story. And so that requires an analysis of the data. So all theyve given is data here. And so as a physicist and our job is to just tease out bits of information from small data situations. We never trust our data, we dont start out trusting our data. So you dont take it at face value. Well, heres my question. It says no evidence that these ufos are connected to aliens. But, like, how would you know if its connected to aliens or not . Well, because the data would tell you whether or not its connected to aliens. So the easiest thing is, hey, heres an alien, but weve fallen short of that. So i think whats happening is weve all been primed to expect and want aliens. Thats a real thing among humanity right now. There are real enthusiasts who will take data that does not actually conclusively say anything, and draw something from that. And right now there are no conclusions other than things are strange and they need to be explained. And there could be a national security implication. What are the odds that this is another Countrys Technology . Well, listen, that is the train of thought that people will go down. The first thing you ask yourself is are these signals real or are they not real . Then if there is a real technology that is doing things that people dont expect and people are describing as so many year as head of where we are currently, the next question you want to ask is is it ours or is it not ours . And of course if its not ours, in either case its very interesting, but if its not ours then it could be something thats dangerous. And thats where you go to your officials who are in charge of national security, and they will give you those answers. And well see a report that we expect to be released this month.
