It is a fascinating look, Thank You, Dan Merica for bringing it to us. All right. Hello, everyone. Thank you for joining. Im fredricka whitfield. With begin with a Court Ruling that affects one of the largest states in country. As the country is struggling with an epidemic of Gun Violence, a judge overruled a 32yearold Assault weapons ban. He says it violates the rights, and the popular weapons that were used in shootings of parkland, san bernardino, aurora, las vegas, and the list is on and on are akin to a swiss Army Knife and combination of Home Defense Weapon and homeland defense weapon. Polo sandoval is joining us. The California Attorney General is appealing the decision, but how did we get there . That ruling is why many are outraged this weekend after that ruling was issued, and it all has to do with the 1989 ban that was in place in the state of california. This is one that has weathered a lot of opposition for over three decades here, and just some Background And Context on that, that actually happened after shooting at a Elementary School in stockton, california, that resulted in deaths of five children all under 10 years old. In response the state of california then passed this legislation in what it referred to as the californias first Assault Weapons act. It basically defined what an Assault Weapon is, and also made it illegal to own and possess unless you have certain permits and been in place, and updated routinely, and that is until of Course Yesterday when Judge Benitez overturned it, and said it is unconstitutional, and limiting the and of california residents to own and possess these weapons that are widely available elsewhere throughout the country, and this is provoking a huge response by not only those who have actually lost Loved Ones to mass shootings, but also by California State officials including the states Attorney General that responded to this in promising to not only appeal this decision, but went on to write, and talking about Attorney General Rob Bonta who responded writing, there is no Sound Basis in law, fact or Common Sense to equate Assault Weapons with swiss army knives on Gun Violence Awareness Day and in light of the shootings in our own california communities. So this is from the California Attorney General who is going to appeal this decision. And Judge Benitez does have a history of Butting Heads with california and efforts to pass stricter gun measures. This is the latest to fuel this Controversy And Heartache and heartbreak to those families who have lost loved witones to mass shootings. Thank you, and now i want to bring in Brandon Wolf who was at that Pulse Nightclub in orlando in 2018, and i am sure in these circumstances that it makes you relive what you experienced in 2016. Does it . It does. I just have to say that it is incredibly insulting for an Activist Judge to gaslight me and other survivors and minimize the hell that we have been through. As you noted the courts have ruled over and over again that the second amendment is not unlimited. Lets be clear, this judges ruling is going to be appealed, and it will be struck down, and he is going to be remembered as having stood on the wrong side of history, but i am curious how many people will die in the meantime, and how quickly Gun Manufacturers will try to flood california with these weapons. It is shameful. In the meantime, i am curious what you think about the judges comparisons to Assault Weapons and an army swiss knife, and what are the concerns that his opinion could help provoke or incite or influence . Well, i will tell you this much, if a swiss Army Knife had been used at pulse, we would have had a Birthday Party for my Best Friend last week and not a vigil. The weapons that we are talking about dont come with a Nail File and corkscrew in case you are lost in woods with a bottle of wine. They are designed for one purpose and one purpose only, and that is to kill as many as quickly as possible. After the shooting at pulse and i dont know why, but i thought that getting the copies of the autopsy reports from my Best Friends would bring me some kind of closure, but instead, it underscored for me how many deaths their deaths were. It took 19 rounds between the two of them. One died on the operating table, and his parents had to come to identify his body, and the other never got up off of the Dance Floor and their organs were perforated and the bodies torn apart and that is the human Cost And Reality of what these weapons do, and no copying and pasting an Gun Lobbying points are going to change that, and no insulting comparisons to a swiss Army Knife is going to take away the pain that these weapons have caused so many people in this country. And the loss of your two friends is still very great, and the pain that you are experiencing remains indelible. So now, how concerned are you that those who were trying to create the same kind of change or overturn other State Laws that they might be inspired by or find fuel in Judge Benitez ruling. Are you concerned to yourself at all that this is just the beginning . Well, we know that this is the tactic, the right . We know it is the tactic not just of the Gun Manufacturers and the gun lobby, but of the far right in general, because their entire purpose right now is to roadblock progress, they go to the courts, the courts they have packed over the last couple of decades, and they work really hard to undermine the progress that we have made. We have made a lot of progress. I am really proud of advocates across the country who have turned the tide on how americans talk about Gun Violence and our need to keep our communities safe. But the truth is that, yes, opponents to Gun Safety are going to look to this ruling as fuel for their fight. Lawmakers beholden to the special interests are going to continue to stand as our greatest Road Plblock to progre one thing they noted in the opinion is that he used the inconsistencies of State Laws for the justification of the ruling, and if that is not the endorsement of a federal endorsement of a ban on high capacity weapons. So on that the judge and i agree that we need consistent policy, and the americans are ready for that, but it is time for the elected leaders to stop making E Cushion excuses and get it done. This is a very emotional time in that it is the anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shooting, but by now, did you think that there would be greater movement on the spate of gunrelated violence in this country . I know that we are all looking for the headline, right, that big headline on top of the New York Times that says federal ban on Assault Weapons reinstated. Of course, im disappointed that we have not gotten there, but it is impo rtant to note that acros the country communities are fighting and winning. Think of the Po Power of the yo activists after the shooting in parkland and how that was usher in by the way, floridas first Gun Safety laws in 20 years, and think about at the black and brown communities who experience violence every single day and then get out there for safer communities. And think about how moms demand action spent more money than the nra. We have made a ton of progress as a community, and we have to celebrate that progress, but what we are still missing is the big wins, and this is coming at a real human cost. So my hope is that as we hit this fiveyear mark, we reflect on the things that we have been able to achieve, but we also recommit to honoring those victims and victims of Gun Violence everywhere with action by creating a world that they would be proud of, and a world that does not let them down. Brandon wolf, so glad that you could be with us, and so sorry under these kinds of circumstances. Thank you. Great to be here. All right. Straight ahead this hour. All kinds of major companies have been targeted with Ransomware Attacks from Meat Producers to Oil Pipelines to Media Conglomerates to transit systems, and seems that everyone is a target for what the White House is calling a rising national security threat. Jessica snyder reports. Reporter the biden administration is sounding the alarm about the growing threat of Cyber Attacks. Fbi director Christopher Wray talking about how to combat this succession of hacks and cyberware about how the administration had addressed the 9 11 threats. He said that the fbi is directing about 100 different ransomware and many traced back to russia. One study says that u. S. Was hit by more than 100,000 Ransomware Attacks last year alone costing businesses over half A Billion to 2. 3 billion in 2020. Ransomware locks up computer files and the hackers demand Money Payments to release. So the techniques will show you a 300 increase in the Ransom Payments over the prior year. Reporter Ransomware Attacks have impacted everything from the Gas Pipeline operated by colonial that led to Gas Shortages along the East Coast to Meat Production Plants Shutdown and individual Health Care networks as the Computer Systems have been shutdown sporadically around the country and the world. We are worried that some people will get hurt especially considering the incidents affecting Health Care. Irelands Health Care system went down. Reporter the Department Of Justice says it plans to coordinate these cases the same way it does terrorism cases by sharing and coordinating information. Sean henry says it is going to take an interarable effort. T an international effort. They have to work together the take these people off of the field. Reporter the threats of Cyber Attacks have been looming for years. Former national director of Intelligence Dan coats warned about the threat three years ago. They who are serving the digital systems of this country are literally under attack. Reporter he appealed for instant action saying that your corporate cyber defenses match the threat. And Director Wray called out russia in that interview for knowingly harboring Cyber Attackers, but Vladimir Putin is calling It Nonsense that russia was ever involved in any Cyber Attacks specifically on the Jbs Meat packing plants. Joe biden will get the chance to confront putin. And the White House says the President Biden is going to attack attack on jbs as well as other attacks we know emanated from russia. Jessica snyder, cnn. I want to bring in jonathan our analyst of security. It is the choice, because the reason being it is a quick payoff by two criminals or two entities who have identified vulnerabilities in their infrastructure, and what is happening is that the organizations are targets of opportunity by Threat Actors who have increasingly adopted more sophisticated tactics, and the significance of the recent Ransomware Attacks is that they focus on the Technology Networks rather than what we have seen in the past which is the traditional networks. That has a significant second and third order of consequence to our daily lives. It is really difficult to predict what the next company is going to be to fall victim to the attack, but what we have to do is to understand how these attacks are leveraging Human Error or known vulnerabilities and address that. What has become very clear this year specifically is that Ransomware Attacks will proliferate, because they are so successful and become more complex just as they are only funded by the money that they are able to extort from these companies. So then, what should the proper response be so that you can also simultaneously avert another Cyber Attack . Listen, fred, this is where you need to bring the Public Sector and the private sector together to come up with a very comprehensive plan. The Department Of Justice said last week that it is now going to treat Ran Somewransomware as high priority crimes, and we just heard in the report that critical infrastructure is attacked that is a national security issue, and the White House is looking at how they retaliate against these types of attacks, but the u. S. Response is not going to be the same as what these attacks are, because the u. S. Engages in the Cyber Attacks based on Strategy And Precision and not the way that the foreign hostile actors do. So the reality is that nothing is going to change until it imposes serious and impactful consequences to those actors, and the responsibility is going to shift back to the private organization so that the cyber response plans, and their networks and how they had dress this threat are codified and that the Jbs Attack and the colonial Pipeline Attack should only serve as a Call To Action for organizations to stop and look at their own systems to make sure they can are not becoming a victim of this increasing crime. So what should be learned from the attackers engaged in the colonial Pipeline Attack and others . What should be learned from them so that the u. S. Can do a better job at getting ahead of them . Well, listen, what it comes down to is dont become a victim. One thing that a lot of people have asked me now is with the colonial Pipeline And Jbs is critical infrastructure being attacked and the answer is no. No specific sector is being targeted. The real city is that companiesf every sector is being targeted. So the way to look at it is that the hostile actors are looking at companies who can afford the pay the ransom, and they have vulnerabilities, and again, the Responsibility Shifts back, because you have to develop a unified strategy within your organization, and not to have these vulnerabilities, and it is coming down to a cyber governance and cyber Response Policy that will allow you to defend against these types of attacks, and again, these things are going to continue as long as organizations are deemed profitable and exploited by the hostile actors. It is a complex problem that needs some real Complex Interdiction as well. Jonathan wackrow, Thank You very much. And more passengers are behaving badly. This time, a man tried to break into the cockpit, and the video of his takedown is next. You could take your ulcerative Colitis Treatment in a different direction. A Delta Flight en route from dallas to nashville had to make an Emergency Landing after a passenger tried to breach the cockpit. The man was taken down by another passenger, and held down by the Cabin Crew after he started to bang on the Cockpit Doors midnight. Shows the man barefoot and bound at the wrists and the ankles and being pulled from the jet in albuquerque. For more on this frightening ordeal, we go to vicenza. Yes, many of the people on the flight were excited about being on the plane, and it was an energetic crowd, and perhaps some of them already drinking. In this particular case though she said about an hour into the flight, the Drink Service had just completed and she was starting to check work emails, and saw one passenger in first class starting to yell and get up and say stop the plane and for 30 seconds he was yelling and banging on the Cockpit Doors, and that is when another passenger got up, and tapped another passenger and the two men tackled him, and these people are the heroes. This is what she told me. In Na Mthat moment, you do, freeze, because it is so scary, and so overwhelming, and you really just cant believe it is happening to you. That is the biggest thing, and for those gentlemen to jump up and be like, oh, not today, sir. I mean, it was very heroic very honestly. Not today, sir. That is the attitude of those who jumped up efficiently and without pausing and without freezing, and of course, the plane diverted and landed in albuquerque, and she got video of the Law Enforcement coming on board, and there you can see the gentleman being dragged out of the plane, and his wrists and hands were tied at that point. He was taken into federal custody we understand. This is one of several incidents that have happened recently, and late last Month Someone on southwest assaulted a Flight Attendant and taking out two of her teeth. I wanted to read a statement from the southwest Flight Attendant union saying that this unprecedented number of incidents has reached intolerable with noncompliance becoming more aggressive. There is an extension of the zero policy, and that is around making sure that people keep their masks on, but now they have stronger ways to enforce people who are unruly and more than 2,500 reports of unruly Passenger Behavior since the beginning of the year, and sometimes having to fine people up to 52,000, fred. It is extraordinary. Natasha chen, Thank You for bringing that story. Very frightening. Thank you. Perhap assure sign of Thins Reopening and returning to normal, and california is said to loosen most of the restrictions and disney is opening the latest attraction. The Avengers Campus as part of disneyland anaheim. Paul camren is there. And of course he would be there. It is symbolic, isnt it . It is symbolic, and important and heres why. When we get to the 15th june, california is going to reopen and loosening most of Restriction And Disneyland is going to allow people from out of state to come into the park which it has not and no long require Temperature Checks and the cdc is saying that there are problems and serious problems related to teenagers and the coronavirus. I want to bring in eliza, and you are a park goer. You have been vaccinated, but do you have any concerns when you hear that the cdc says that there are problems for teenagers and the coronavirus . I feel like there is other problems that we go through like the coronavirus, and we have different symptoms and stuff. But, theres so many other things that we can be worrying about, and the vaccine is not anything to be scared of or that we need to refuse, because we are putting a lot of different stuff in our bodies as teens anyway, and the vaccine, anyway, i feel like it is not going to do so much harm as a little bit of the Side Effects to us. Great. Thank you for taking the time out, and that is just one perspective here at disneyland. Now, lets talk about the opening of the Avengers Campus, the only one of its kind. There is not a similar one in florida at disney park, because the rights to the Marvel Empire in florida belong to universal, but i got a tour of this campus, and it is hightech. Among other things, there is a ride called the Web Slingers where you play Al Lon and sling your web and try to capture the bots running wild. Take a look. Lots ojaitech wizardry here, but some of the effects are just Old School optical illusions. I lost my Ifb Communications to you, but the Bottom Line is that on june 15th, disneyland, the Avengers Campus, and the rest of it opening up fully and a critical part of this Orange County economy, and the businesses up and down the streets have been suffering dramatically with all types of visitors and guests not allowed to come to the places, and so they are crossing their fingers to get fully back on their feet. Back to you, fred. Peoplie are starving for a i will bit of fun, and that is one place to hear from it, and it is remarkable to hear that one young lady that the risk is low, and she is encouraging people in her own way to go get vaccinated. Thank you, paul vercammen. And Royal Caribbean says they are ready to resume operations. Six of the cruise companys ships will begin sailing from u. S. Cruise ports starting this summer. The cruises came to a halt when the cdc issued a nosale order 16 months ago, and many of the Royal Caribbean ships are waiting for the Cdc Approval to sail again. The first cruise is going to be from the Port Of Miami on july 2nd. All right. Meantime today in san francisco, a ceremony is being held to commemorating 40 years since the beginning of the Aids Epidemic in the u. S. Among those paying tribute are House Speaker Nancy Pelosi And California governor gavin newsom, and dr. Anthony fauci is adding his voice to the commemoration. As Elizabeth Cohen explains, he was on the front line of fighting the disease in the early days. At the present time, we dont have an effective antiviral therapy. Reporter before dr. Fauci took on the covid virus, he was working on hiv aids. The first official report known of illnesses that would later become aids. I remember picking up the weekly Morbidity And Mortality report and seeing the report of five young gay men who developed a very unusual pneumonia, a Pneumocyst Pneumonia in los angeles. I had no idea what it was about. I thought that it was somewhat of a fluke. That would not really come or amount to anything. Reporter then less than a month later another report of more patients in other cities with young men dying of this illness. I went from person seeing patients with other diseases in developing cures and adequate therapies for them in the early part of my career to everyday Taking Care of people who were inevitably going to die. Reporter dr. Fauci calls these times the darkest years of his life. It must have been very difficult to watch patient after patient dying. It was more than difficult. We were energized by the challenge of the situation and also by the bravery and the empathy of the suffering of the young men who we were Taking Care of. But, i think that many of us still have scars of that. Reporter it took 15 years, but Fauci And Other Scientists brought the worst of the crisis to an end. It really turned around when we developed the highly effective therapies. First gradually in 1986 1987 with azt, and then the transforming year of 1996 when we had the first highly effective combination therapy. As you are describing this, it makes me think of the current situation that covid has been so awful worldwide, and now, it is starting to change. Again with a medical intervention. That is the comparability of the two, and the thing that came to the rescue were the medical interventions that resulted in years of investment of clinical and biomedical research. Some of the science and the technologies that went into our efforts albeit unsuccessful thus far for a vaccine for hiv was very important in paving the way for us to get a highly successful vaccine for covid19. Reporter fauci still studies hiv today, a 40year journey. There is no vaccine, no cure but effective treatments mean that the people infected with hiv can live long healthy lives. It is a long story. It is a long journey that we are still in. So this is a very meaningful Anniversary And Commemoration for me. Reporter Elizabeth Cohen, cnn, reporting. All right. A trump financial officer has been brought before the Grand Jury. They say that a long time official has recently testified. Jeffrey mcconney has worked with the Trump Organization for 35 years, and he was granted immunity of the subject he testified which is the probe of the top Organization Officer allan weisselberg, and to discuss all of this is michael zeldin, the host of the podcast with that said. Good to see you, michael. So how significant that a senior trump financial official is testifying before this Grand Jury . It is very significant. In a financial crimes investigation, you need two things. You need documents, the financial documents which they obtained recently through subpoena, and then you need somebody inside of the financial arm of the organization to explain them. That is apparently what mcconney is going to do, and the other person would be wiseleburg. And that mcconney is granted immunity, and that would mean that he had some, or prosecutors believe he has some really important good information in which to make that kind of trade. How, how detailed might that information be . So, when you are bringing in New York under state law, a witness into the Grand Jury by subpoena, they automatically get immunity. It is a quirky sort of thing. It is not the same as in the federal system. And so he will be granted immunity and not because they believe he is going to lie, but they need him to explain what they are finding in documents. He is sort of a Path Finder for them, and because he is not a target, and the subject of the information for him is to bring him in, and give him the immunity and hear what he has to say, and thereby Pressure Weisselberg to do the same. So you see that Allen Weisselberg could if there is wrongdoing in the Trump Organization. We always have to start as we have for three years now with the understanding that we dont know whats going on there. Theres a lot of ifs in our suppositions here. If they are under investigation for financial crimes, if weisselberg knows about that or participated in it, then what . So if they are conducting a financial crimes investigation, weisselberg knows of this or participated in it, then he has to make a deal to protect himself and his son in order to stay out of jail if this is a vibrant investigation. He does that by cooperating up and the ups are the people whose last name begins with trump. Does it appear this case is moving fast, or is this likely just one of many more people who will be called to testify . Well, its moving as these cases move. They first acquire the documents. They analyze the documents. They have their experts analyze the documents. Then they figure out what do they need from an insider to further explain those documents. Were moving quite, you know, steadily along the continuum. Weisselberg and mcconnie are two very senior people in the written Documents Phase of it. I think it is moving along pretty maturely at this stage of the investigation. All right. Fascinating we know as much as we know. Of course there is so much we dont know. Right. Thank you so much. Good to see you. Be well. Thanks, fred. Byebye. Well be right back. Lawmakers are expecting a report from the Defense Department later on this month detailing exactly what the u. S. Intelligence community knows about ufos. Cnns Brian Todd has more on the uncertainty. Reporter outside their Cockpit Windows Veteran Navy Fighter pilots apparently see objects that surprise them. There is a whole fleet of them. Look on the sa. My gosh. The wind is 120 knots to the west. Reporter this video is from a u. S. Military Training Mission off the coast of jacksonville, florida, 2015. The objects are ufos, and American Military Pilots have seen so many of them in recent years that the pentagon and the u. S. Intelligence community have undertaken a large scale investigation. Cnn has learned u. S. Intelligence officials have found no evidence to confirm those objects are alien spacecraft, but they also cannot rule out the possibility. Thats according to five sources familiar with an upcoming report to congress. Theres a lot that they cannot say, a lot they dont know from a scientific standpoint, but, also, there may be classification issues. Reporter in recent years cnn has spoken to former Navy Pilots who could not explain objects they saw on Training Missions. Ryan graves who flew fa18 super Hornet Fighter jets was on the same mission off jacksonville which spotted this object. Graves told us the object was similar to what He Saw on Training Missions off the southern coast of virginia throughout 2014 and 2015. He said the objects showed the capability of staying airborne for long periods and could move laterally quickly. A lot of times flying around these objects and they would tend to exhibit movement, so as we approach them, they would kind of move out of the way. Reporter another former Navy Fighter pilot told us He Saw a ufo during a Training Mission off San Diego in 2004 on a clear day. What surprised him . The object had no visible propulsion and was much more agile than a plane or helicopter. He said it looked like a 40foot long Tic Tac with no wings. This was extremely abrupt like a Ping Pong Ball bouncing off the wall. It would hit and go the other Way And Change directions at will. Reporter one source tells cnn u. S. Officials cannot rule out the possibility these mysterious objects were operated by americas enemies like russia and china, who experts say are developing hypersonic weapons. Are we confronted with missile systems, Weapons Systems from either Russia Or China that are far better than our defenses are . If that is the case, then we have a long way to go to protect our country. Could we actually be confronted with aliens . To me it looks terrestial. It does not look alien. If it is anything human like at all that is my Smell Test for aliens. What do humans do . We build vehicles. We build crafts. We fly around the sky. Reporter several sources have told cnn they dont expect the u. S. Intelligence community to release a lot of specific information at all in the report to congress. Why . Because if these sightings are next Generation Technology operated by russia, china, or another u. S. Rival, Intelligence Officials dont want to tip them off on what the u. S. Has seen. Brian todd, cnn, washington. We cant be alone, right . Thanks so much for joining me today. I am fredricka whitfield. Cnn newsroom continues right now with Jim Acosta.
