They are still about three times the new spending that the republicans had in their latest counteroffer. The question is whether they are going to come up and how high they would come up, because the White House said if hes willing to go lower than 1 Trillion in the new spending. And what could be the Sticking Point is how to actually pay for this. What we are told by sources is that in this Meeting Yesterday President biden did float the idea of foregoing the idea of immediately raising the Tax Rate from 21 to 28 as he initially put forward because Thats Something the republicans said they are not onboard with, and the idea that President Biden brought this up in the Meeting Yesterday seems to be an acknowledgment is that they realize the republicans are not going to be getting onboard if they move forward with that plan as to pay for this infrastructure plan. And theres a conversation happening, and whether or not there are deadlines happening with the White House, and this is what the White House said earlier today when we asked about potential deadlines. Does he see monday as kind of the deadline for any major breakthroughs on where these talks are going . No. Hes going to continue to have conversations with democrats and republicans about what the path forward may look like. Certainly its an important its an important moment in the timeline, of course, because there will be movement then. We have seen Speaker Pelosi Talk about how she wants to move forward with infrastructure in june, and schumer has talked about how he wants to move forward with infrastructure in july. The president is not here to set new deadlines. She said they are not here to set new deadlines. We know democrats have put deadlines on this and said they Want To see more movement. And some democrats urging the White House to move on if there are no major breakthroughs in the coming days. Manu, you are in West Virginia and you are covering Senator Manchin and he plays a role in all of this, and has he weighed in . He is calling for the bipartisan talks to continue, and its a 50 50 senate and in order to move legislation in the senate, if the democrats Want To move along Party Lines they need Joe Manchin to go along here, and one of the things he called for is for the talks to continue before he decides to embrace the idea of cutting out the republicans and allow the bill to advance among all 50 democratic senators, and its unclear whether or not he would be open to move forward on a democratonly strategy if the talks with the republicans dont pan out. Hes working on a separate group to try and cut a deal, some sort of bipartisan deal, a scaled Back Version of what the republicans are talking about here, and will the White House even go for that. Thats an open question. No doubt hes a key player to watch in all of this, because if he does green light a democratic only strategy, thats the way the dems will go. What is this about the senates efforts to investigate January 6th . What does it include and not include . Its going to be a Big Week next week, and its going to be the first major authoritative report, and its coming from two key committees with the Break Downs and the failure to share intelligence, and why the national guard took so long to secure the building on that day, and its a narrow focus, and the scope is on those particular security issues. Its supposed to set the Ground Work for Funding Legislation and to beef up security at the capitol. What it does not do is look at the role of donald trump, about his efforts to try and subvert the election and promote the January 6th rally, and things he said at the event and the role other republicans played to try and overturn the elections on January 6th, giving false hope to the trump supporters that stormed the capitol that day, that is not part of this investigation is that expected to come out in more than 100 pages next week, and thats only going to fuel the debate if theres further investigations, and thats what democrats want but republicans say this is enough. Lets move on to what is happening with the capitol rioters. One has plead guilty now. Tell me what hes looking at and what it means for the host of other people who are being investigated and charged . This is going to be called message sentencing. Its going to be up to the judge where he comes out on this. If the judge sentences this person to time behind bars, it will send a message, and this defendant that took the plea, hes not charged with the most serious conduct. He did not plead to destruction of property, and he was charged with obstructing congress. Serious, but theres going to be a real message behind this. Nothing violent here . Right. Are you expecting the men and women who were charged will be taking deals, most of them . The vast majority of federal trials, 80 and up result in convictions and if that happens you really get the book thrown at you. They end of the day you take pleas because its more federal, and backing up a little bit, what happens in this instance, you have video that accounts for every action that you have taken, and so its a credit to the fbi to have investigated and bring people to accountability, and everybody should be accountable in what they did, and if they engaged in acts of violence, they shouldnt and if they if they did, they should. He came in the outfit if anybody wonders these were trump supporters . And not dressed like a normal tourists, like one of the congress members said. Yeah, time served and probation in this case. Is that plausible at all . Its not. Its quite frankly, offensive. Lets look at the reality. Not only are we dealing with an instance relating to the murder, relating to doing it with a depraved heart, relating to his criminality in being negligent and everything else, but the judge found what we call aggravating circumstances. Like what . When you engage in a crime and there happens to be children there, that increases the penalty. When you are heinous with respect to your attitude in a crime, that increases the penalty. And when you do it with a gang of people it increases it. The Guideline Sentence would have been 12 1 2, but with the aggravating factors, he could face as many as 30 and 40 years, and now you are suggesting he gets probation . They are very profound ideological provisions here between palestinians and Naftali Bennett, and hes more right wing than netanyahu, and so i think that theres a sense of optimism about potentially getting netanyahu out especially because he was threatening the Rule Of Law in his Corruption Case by trying to avoid prosecution, but its hard to imagine this coalition could last for that long. If it does not last and gets through the first two years of Naftali Bennetts leadership, then what happens then . Well, supposedly at that point it will rotate to Yair Lapid, and his party got more votes and he needed bennett to form a government. I think its dubious it would get that far, and its hard to know how this government would act on common issues. Theres so many very important issues on which the people in this government fundamentally disagree. Lets say there would be another round of violence as we saw over the past few weeks. The people in this government would have completely different views about how to respond to that. It seems to me theres only a small narrow diagram on things that they actually agree on. We have seen in the last weeks and months the conflict between Israel And Gaza does not work on a political calendar. These deifferent parts wont focus on the israel palestinian issues, but they would focus on the infrastructure and economy. Is that realistic . I dont think thats realistic. Its easy for the israeli politicians to say we will just ignore the palestinian for sure, and they do not have the right to vote for the government, and they are lacking basic rights so it may be easy for Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid to say lets just not focus on them, right, but they are going to try and get Israels Attention some way or another, as would any other group of people who are being denied basic human rights. Sooner or later i think the government would have to respond to that. So Benjamin Netanyahu said the reporting is that hes not going to go down without a struggle. What are his options, if any . What i think he would try to do is peel off some of the rightwing members, and he would say you cant go into a coalition that would include the Defact Yo Support of a arab palestinian party, and it will destroy your political career because you are abandoning the right, and thats the play they are making and you have time to do that, and i think so far the leaders of this coalition have shown that such a desperation to get rid of netanyahu and not go to a fifth election, which would happen if this coalition didnt work, that they are holding together for the moment. We have new video of defense u. S. Secretary Lloyd Austin meeting with the israeli defense minister. What does this now change mean for the u. S. , as you have up first a hard right leader and considering the criticism that the White House got over the last couple of weeks about its handling of the conflict, its lack of simply calling for a ceasefire, what does this change mean for the u. S. . I think its going to exacerbate the movement of what we have seen, in saying, wait, theres a total disconnect here. The united states keeps supporting a Twostate Solution with a Palestinian State, and you have Naftali Bennett who is more opposed to the idea of a Palestinian State, and so if thats really americas policy to support the Palestinian Statehood, we have to be in conflict with the israeli government. If we are just going to accept bennetts agenda, it means its bogus and the united states was not supporting a Palestinian State and the people on the left may think beyond that towards supporting one equal state, which is israel, the West Bank and gaza. And the leader further right than netanyahu would bring those conversations to the fore in the united states. As a High School and firsttime voter, Lucas Heartwell did his homework and discovered her now deleted post. If we cannot have an Education System that is run by people who care about the truth, what is education . He and others want her to resign, but some parents support her 100 . Shes a conservative so they are attacking her. You think its along political lines and has nothing to do with qanon . Exactly. I think part of it is real. We wanted to ask her what she believed. She did not respond to our request for an interview, but she was at the school board meeting. You have a Big Q Burning On Fire and says we are pissed, and is that something you believed in when you posted it . I dont remember that tweet. And there are several others, and you dont believe in humancaused climate change, is that also true . I believe that science is a method and not a Belief System and that this adherence that you have to believe scientists is more of, like, a religious cult. You dont mask the healthy, you mask the sick. In huntington beach, california, its the science of covid called into the conspiracy. Are you thinking covid19 was a little bit of a Conspiracy Theory . Dont get me started. Thats former ufc champion, ortiz, and he is getting widespread support for being a political disrupter. He seemed to me to be somebody who i thought might mix things up for us and change things around. Hes mixing things up, by spending lots of time spewing and posting conspiracy theories. And less time dealing in Policy And Council business. Well, the first day when he was sworn in, he referred to the pandemic as a plandemocratic. He also refused to a mask, nor did he want his children to wear a mask to school. The boys will not be wearing their masks today, and well see what they say. It all came to a head just this week as the first Inperson Council Meeting this january. After just five months on the City Council, ortiz resigned effective immediately. Oh, my gosh, and Sara Sidner joins us now. When you are trying to confront them and reach out and talk to them and enter them and they dont Want To, and that School Board Member, was she trying to say she was not a Qanon Supporter once you found her . What you often get is a nebulous answer, and they will not confirm or deny it fully. They will say things like i have an open mind, or i dont remember that and then you start to ask about the conspiracy itself and they confirm some of the tenants of the conspiracy itself. What i found really telling with tito ortiz, and Nobody Nobody had any idea that he was going to resign that day. We were the only camera crew, and it was supposed to be a regular City Council meeting. He asked to have a statement, and he read it and everybody looked at each other, and what he said in his statement was that his family was being threatened and nobody should be threatening anybodys family, but if you look at what they have done over time, and they are the ones, him and his girl friend, they put their children fullfaced easy to so on Social Media for thousands of people to see publicly, and refusing to wear a mask. When california was going through a horrible time when people are dying by the hundreds a day, and putting that out on Social Media so they can be ridiculed. They did that on their own children putting them right in the middle of this debate that they are having, and so this has been really difficult to watch how some of these candidates and some of the people getting into office i do Want To mention one thing, there were about 19 candidates who were running for congress this is not local or state who have espoused some of the qanon talk, and what is happening is the people who Follow Qanon are fervent and a group of people that are suddenly there to support you if you give any kind of inkling you might be interested, and they raise money, they raise a lot of money, and thats why this is seeping into politics. We have seen that from marjorie taylor greene. Heres what i dont get about q, and they said the storm was coming, and it didnt come, and why are they still holding on if they say this Big Day is coming several times has not come . Is that the milliondollar question. What has happened is every time one of these conspiracies does not come true, and the first one was Hillary Clinton was going to be arrested in the next couple of days, and never happened. What happens is the Deep State has caught on to us, and now they morph. What happened in november during the election, stop the steal, that whole rally, that helped them say, you see, the Deep State even they know, because they are not part of qanon, and even they know the Deep State is in on this and try and stop it from happening and President Trump is really the president. They are able to morph constantly and thats why its able to continue to grow. So glad you are highlighting that. This can be a critical location of gathering not just for our city, but for the entire world, and through a phased recon reconnection, we can also find a way to provide the necessary social services and City Service that has been missing at times over this last year. This is division among the divided community. For example, one gentleman says he wants to see that intersection reopen and the area at 38th and chicago get back to what he calls normal, but on the other hand, he said he wants that area preserved, especially after some of the healing he says he has witnessed over the last year. When we heard from the citys mayor, jacob frey, in the last hour, he said the Citys Goal is to preserve that space. For example, the mayor says they will work their hardest to make sure tires never run over the area where George Floyd was killed. The mayor also says hes not giving an exact timeline at this hour but is concerned about businesses in the area. Some of those Business Owners say their business has suffered. Now, City Leaders and some members of the community have been in discussion for at least the last six to eight months. I spoke with a local pastor earlier this morning who said he has talked to the mayor, the chief of police and other Community Leaders about reopen ing the area. By contrast, some in the community say when City Crews showed up this morning, removing those barricades, they were surprised. Listen in. People tell us, you know, you had a year. No one seems to take into consideration that even in the midof our activism, just maybe, just maybe that we might be black people grieving, too. And that maybe, just maybe that the cross is heavy to bear. Reopening the streets does not help our community to heal. The reopen ing at 38th and chicago, an intersection known beyond the twin cities, quite frankly an intersection known around the world. The reopening has started. Barricades were put in place by members of the community.
