We begin with new cnn reporting, the Justice Department looking at potential obstruction of justice in connection with the ongoing investigation of Congressman Matt Gaetz and his alleged sexual relationship with a minor. Investigators have information that alleges gaetz and an associate discussed plans to speak to gaetzs exgirlfriend about an investigation in 2020. His exgirlfriend is considered a key witness against the congressman. Paula reid has the latest from washington. Paula, tell us whats happening here. Good morning. This really heightens the legal jeopardy for the congressman because if he or any of his associates tried to influence witnesses in the case, thats a federal crime. I it could result in jail time. In our reporting, we learn this isnt new. Investigators have been concerned about possible obstruction this this investigation since last fall. Now, among the incidents that are being scrutinized, cnn has learned that in october 2020, the congressman and an associate discussed taking a trip to visit an exgirlfriend to talk about this investigation. Now, this exgirlfriend as you noted is considered a key witness in the case. Its important to clarify though. This woman, this is not the 17yearold girl who he all allegedly had Sexual Contact with. But this Exgirl Friend was linked to the congressman in the sum over 2017, and thats when he allegedly had the Sexual Contact with a minor. Now, politico was the first to report about the Obstruction Investigation late last night. They also say another incident that is being scrutinized is a Phone Call between a witness and his exgirlfriend where at some point the congressman was patched in. Now, the Congressman Spokesman issued a statement saying Congressman Gaetz pursues justice, he does not obstruct it. After reporting on this for a few months now, its important to remind people at the heart of this case are a lot of young women. Many of them are vulnerable. Weve spoken with a lot of them. Some have told me theyre scared with everything going on with this investigation, but theyre the type of people who would be highly susceptible to influence from powerful men. Obstruction would be telling a witness to mislead federal investigators engaged in an investigation. Its punishable with Up To 20 years in prison, so its a big deal. A lot of it has had to do with child trafficking. This shows you how broad the overall investigation is. Its also about witness tampering. It could also be about Campaign Finance violations. It could also be about aggravated identity theft. Joel greenberg has currently pled guilty to that charge. You could have Man Act violations. The law says you Cant Transport Pe people. Its more than just about child sex trafficking. I wanted to ask you separately about a very interesting development in one of the cases that has been filed. Cnn spoke with the attorney for democratic congressman Eric Swalwell whos fired one of these lawsuits against a speaker, Mo Brooks, whos also a member of congress. It turns out in all this time, two months, he hasnt been able to his lawyers or whoevers on his behalf doing, this has not been able to serve Mo Brooks. Hes even hired a private investigator to try to serve him. What do you make of this . Its ironic that the same guy who told the January 6th rally that its time to start kicking ass is now hiding in his office with the lights turned off behind a potted plant. Thats my image. It reminds me of the liter of qanon after hes sentenced to jail, hes asking for organic foochltd i think it shows that he is worried that hes going to have to pay out of his own Porkts Mo brooks, that is, to defend this lawsuit because swalwell is suing him in his personal capacity. Hes not going to be able to get the government to reimburse him. Hes trying to hide. N its not a crime to hide. Its cowardly, but not a crime. Anthony fauci about this. He said, maybe some of these people possibly could go off their drugs for a period of time or maybe some of these people might benefit from an extra dose of vaccine. Lets take a listen. We need to know what is the approach to these people, to temporarily suspend their therapy when we vaccinate them or give them additional boosters. Were not quite sure. But we have to address those problems because there are a substantial number of people in the United States and worldwide who do not have an adequate immune response. So talking to doctors and patients about this, they use the word pickle. Were in sort of a pickle. We dont know what quite to do. Others studying this are looking for answers. Brianna, john . Its wonderful and important and the work youre doing, some of the most important work of your life. What went through your mind when naomi osaka, you know, number two Tennis Player in the world, steps out of the French Open because she says she wants to deal with her Mental Health. When i first read it, i was so happy because she is showing her vulnerability and shes doing it her own way. You know, i think back to the struggles i went through when i was competing. I dont know if i would have been able to take my own words and put them on a platform for everybody to see. Like shes putting herself out there. And i feel this really could be an even bigger breakthrough for the Mental Health world. We think of everything weve gone through in the last year. This is something that i think really could help a lot of people. So i was so happy for her to be able to share exactly what she wanted and, you know, it said in the message that she loves playing tennis and wanted to play tennis. Maybe that helps her feel like her authentic self. I was ecstatic to see how everything came across but i was very saddened to see how much backlash there was. This is a Human Being thats sharing her feelings and emotions, and, yeah, im sure it was challenging for her to do. Youve been very open about how hard this past year with the pandemic has been for you. You talk about Mental Health, i think, being raised, the awareness of it over the past year. We think about physical health of an athlete. We wouldnt ask you to swim with a broken leg or for her to play tennis with a broken leg. And yet even as Mental Health becomes a bigger issue, it doesnt kind of get the same billing as physical health. Do you think that it needs to . 100 . I mean, you just said it. If your Mental Health is off, youll not feel 100 yourself. Your physical self if your physical self is off, you obviously might not be able to walk. Youre definitely not going to feel like yourself. So i feel like if we have the power and the ability to work both of them together, i feel we have the possibility to do even bigger things than we are right now. So, you know, i feel like its pretty incredible. The News Or Platform and take this time for herself. She wants to get herself better and, yeah, i think its awesome. Its so powerful what she did and i wish her the best. One of the reasons i hope people see your documentary and read what youve written about Mental Health is because its searing, its raw. Youre very frank with what youve gone through. And one of the things that ticks you off is how some people think it was like another race or swim meet for you that you won. You announced you have Mental Health issues. You beat them. You won the Gold Medal and now its done. You made clear, this is not done and it will never be done for you. Yeah, and, you know, i think thats the thing about Mental Health. Were continually learning and growing through this process and, you know, every single Persons Journey is completely different as well. So, you know, i think its it will be an in my opinion, an even more exciting year for Mental Health because of what weve already learned this year. One olympics question. These athletes getting ready to go. What do you think its like for them right now in the weeks before games that have been delayed for a whole year and with new questions and concerns about the coronavirus in japan itself. Yeah, i mean, i saw what Team Australia Softball is already over there. So you see some of the teams already moving in kind of getting setting up. They are excited. Im excited now. Like when i saw team australia get off the plane, i had chills up my body because i didnt know if the olympics were even going to happen. So, you know, the chance that its one step closer to happening, i know how important it is how exciting it is from a global standpoint. So for me, i am pumped. Im, you know, i guess im going back and replaying whats going on leading Up To the games like this. This is our taper time, so you will. So this is the best time for swimmers. We get to kind of just splash around and get our head right. And, you know, im sure all these guys and girls are super excited to go over there and get this thing done.
