Welcome to our viewers in Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/united-states'>United States and all around the world, its tuesday, june 1st. So how far are you willing to go to protect the vote . Thats the question some democrats are asking this morning. In texas, democrats in the legislature there blocked a new restrictive Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/voting-bill'>Voting Bill by essentially walking out. Depriving the republicans of a quorum needed to pass the bill. Now that victory could be temporary as the republican Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/governor-greg-abbott'>Governor Greg Abbott will soon call a special session to make it law. But some democrats are around the country pointing to texas, this is what we need to do, pull out all the stops to keep these laws from passing. And Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/president-biden'>President Biden, they suggest, isnt doing enough to help. Now for his part the president did condemn the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/texas-bill'>Texas Bill as an assault on democracy, calling it, wrong and unamerican. And he offered up this Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/warning-democracy'>Warning Democracy itself is in peril, here at home and around the world. President biden also called for a federal voter protections, which are currently stalled in congress. The showdown in texas is just the latest example of republican attempts to make it harder for likely democratic voters to cast ballots in 2022 and 2024. And many democrats are now questioning why Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/president-biden'>President Biden should continue to seek deals on issues like infrastructure if republicans are Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/hell-bent'>Hell Bent on derailing his agenda. Joining us now, Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/journalist-and-host'>Journalist And Host of the run tell this podcast, which is awesome and errol louis, host of you decide podcast. We heard the president Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/say-democracy'>Say Democracy is in peril. Democracy is in peril, he says. Is he acting like its in peril . Well, you know, whats interesting about the response that were seeing here, as you mentioned, measures that are stalled in congress. Right . One of the most important things that needs to happen when you talk about executive actions and the ability to push a legislation tHrough is that we have to get the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/john-lewis-voting'>John Lewis Voting Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/rights-act'>Rights Act passed because that would protect a lot of measures and efforts were seeing across the country. When hes talking about democracy being in peril you have to word the add again. Again. This country is a great democracy but that was not always the case. The only ones who could vote were white males who owned property. This was Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/minority-rule'>Minority Rule for the majority of the countrys existence. Only been democracy the last 55 years since the last voting Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/rights-act'>Rights Act was passed. We have to make sure those protections are still in place as strongly as they were 55 years ago. The texas democrats walked out, they walked out to stop it for a time. Again, some democrats are saying this is playing hardball. This is the hardball we need to play. The senate should do away with the filibuster to pass the v federal laws. If he feels democracy is in peril, why isnt he parked in Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/west-virginia'>West Virginia talking to Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/joe-manchin'>Joe Manchin to try to make this happen and giving a speech on this. I know this is impossibly high bar to set, but if you feel that something is really fundamentally at stake here, could he do more . The president is the man the middle. He has this high flown Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/rhetoric-use'>Rhetoric Use on occasions like Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/memorial-day'>Memorial Day to talk about the soul of the nation, to get back to basically the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/founding-story'>Founding Story of his presidency was the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/unite-the-right'>Unite The Right rally that we all were horrified by in 2017 when you had neonazis and different groups getting together and explicitly saying they were going to attack democracy. Its not as explicit of Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/january-6th'>January 6th which is the culmination of all of that but the president does indeed have to match up his rhetoric with his actions. If the tHreat is that serious, hes going to have to go a little beyond sort of jawboning about what Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/state-legislatures'>State Legislatures are doing, understanding, of course, john, he cant do as president of the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/united-states'>United States. Texas legislature wants to change Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/texas-state'>Texas State laws. Hes powerless to stop it and in Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/the-end'>The End he can work with congress, he cant go but so far. He can try to rally his own political forces but in Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/the-end'>The End he cant stop all of these Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/state-legislatures'>State Legislatures from going down this path. Over 250 laws have been put forward. Most of which are going to try to restrict democracy. The president s powerless to stop that but he can alert all of us that something needs to be done. Enough of the bully pulpit. Is he using it enough . Statements like the one he made certainly helped. This is something he has been very clear on and heard very clearly, nobody is fooled by the lie that this is about protecting Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/voting-integrity'>Voting Integrity because there is no evidence that there was any tHreat to Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/voting-integrity'>Voting Integrity. Theres no evidence of voter fraud. This is not a continuation of the big Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/lie-genesis'>Lie Genesis of the big lie. What allowed so many people the election could have even been tolden. You hear people beating this drum beat. Lets be clear, those putting forth these Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/voting-rights'>Voting Rights, restrictive measures its not they dont know the truth, they dont care. Errol, the former national Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/security-adviser'>Security Adviser retired general Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/michael-flynn'>Michael Flynn, is denying that he endorsed the idea of a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/military-coup'>Military Coup in the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/united-states'>United States. Thats a hell of a headline there. Let me play you the sound that came at this Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/maga-event'>Maga Event and listen to how he answers a question about the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/military-coup'>Military Coup in myanmar. Listen. I want to know why what happened in Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/myanmar-cant'>Myanmar Cant happen here. No reason. I mean, it should happen here. No reason. Thats right. All right. You heard that there for yourself. Michael flynn did put out a statement denying that he was endorsing the idea of a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/military-coup'>Military Coup. He is claiming theres no reason for a coup. People heard it for themselves there, errol. Yes. Michael flynn said a lot of inflammatory things before, talked about Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/martial-law'>Martial Law and the former president could have declared Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/martial-law'>Martial Law during the time after the election but before the inauguration, things like that. I have a few questions about this. The mainstreaming in some ways of this notion, to even hear it at a rally like that, questions about having a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/military-coup'>Military Coup in the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/united-states'>United States, we should be like myanmar, its really shocking to hear that. It is shocking. It never loses its power to shock. Michael flynn should be lucky he didnt wake up in a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/jail-cell'>Jail Cell in morning, right, were it north for the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/pardon-given-by'>Pardon Given By donald trump, he would be in a lot of legal trouble. This is somebody who has broken the law repeatedly, violated his oath of office, violated a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/military-tradition'>Military Tradition out of which he come. This would be a good time for a couple of hundred generals, active and retired to sign a letter saying they disassociate themselves from this breach of american tradition. As you said, this is the mainstreaming. This is the fringe, this is somebody who is disgraced, somebody photographed dine at the table of vladimir putin, somebody who lied to the public and to his commanding officers about whether or not he was taking money under the table from turkey while he was simultaneously supposed to be looking out for the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/united-states'>United States of Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/united-states'>United States and in Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/a-million'>A Million different ways this is somebody not fit to be listened to. On the other hand, here he is trying to incite insurrection. And people should disassociate themselves from it. This is not something that could be allowed into the mainstream of american politics. Our friend Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/brianna-keilar'>Brianna Keilar knows shes drawing a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/military-pension'>Military Pension there. Which is notable. I dont want this to pass by because i think this is a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/big-day'>Big Day historically speaking. The u. S. President , Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/joe-biden'>Joe Biden is going to tulsa to commemorate the 100th massacre on black wheat. This is something that went unnoticed by a lot of people, a lot of white people, in america for a long, long time. To have the u. S. President go there and to talk about measures to create some type of equity among africanamericans, financial equity, is a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/big-day'>Big Day. Its a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/big-day'>Big Day. Its very important, the acknowledgment you mentioned how its been buried by history. I recall after Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/9-11'>9 11 a lot of people talking about how terrible this Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/terrorist-attack'>Terrorist Attack was on u. S. Soil and a lot of black people saying there was another terrible Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/terrorist-attack'>Terrorist Attack on american soil that nobody mentioned. Have the president go there and acknowledge it in this way is very significant. The acknowledgment is important. You bring up the issue of economics and the economic cost to this community. Not just to those who were living at the time, but to their desce descendants. This has a generational impact. Why are there no black rockefellers or dupont families. Its because it takes generations to amass that kind of wealth. Thats what was robbed from those families in tulsa. We should note not only the insurance claims they filed were paid out. Thats how egregious of a violation this was just from economic standpoint, not to mention the human stand point. The conversation about making those descendants whole is a really important one to have. Errol, this also fits into a political narrative that Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/joe-biden'>Joe Biden ran on. Absolutely. Look, these are the sort of twin political pillars of Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/biden-presidency'>Biden Presidency where first of all fighting against the right, the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/unite-the-right'>Unite The Right rally, and also the revival of his candidacy when in Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/south-carolina'>South Carolina in the primary, you had jim Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/clyburn-step'>Clyburn Step forward, rally the black base of the democratic party not just in Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/south-carolina'>South Carolina but really tHroughout the nation and swept him both to the nomination and into the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/white-house'>White House. So this is something he had to do. This is something he needs to do. Go forward and speak truthfully about it. And there are a lot of different laws. The open housing laws. The fair housing laws. The Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/community-reinvestment-act'>Community Reinvestment Act where we tried to undo so much of the damage that has been done over the last couple generations. For him to sort of Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/step-forward'>Step Forward and say he wants to continue in that tradition is in some ways a kind of political reparation of a kind that a president can do. These much larger questions about what we do about race in this country, you know, we have to deal with it a bit at a time. Today i think well see a step in that direction. You make us smarter. I appreciate you coming on this morning. Thanks, john. Brianna . Definitely much smarterly say. President biden tapped Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/vice-president'>Vice President harris to lead the admini administrations efforts with the border. The political risk of harris being lirpged to problems at the border and how aides are working to distance her from it. Cnns Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/natasha-bertrand'>Natasha Bertrand is here with more on this. This is fascinating, natasha. Whats going on . Yeah, back in march when Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/president-biden'>President Biden first announced that Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/vice-president'>Vice President harris would be taking on this assignment, dealing with stemming migration to the southern border from these normal tribal Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/count-tris'>Count Tris there was a lot of confusion surrounding what her role would be. Was it going to be a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/border-assignment'>Border Assignment where she was responsible for stemming the tide of migrants to the border and surging resources there and making sure that this was a more manageable situation or was she going to be focussed more on the root causes of migration that were actually driving people to the border in the first instance. Well, republicans kind of seized on that confusion. And they made it seem as though Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/vice-president'>Vice President harris was going to be the new border czar. She was going to be responsible and be the envoy to the border and be responsible for all the problems that arise there. And so when her Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/team-kind'>Team Kind of saw this being mischaracterized by some Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/media-outlets'>Media Outlets and by republicans and questions swirling about whether she herself was going to visit the border in her new capacity, they kind of were dismayed by this because her role was always going to be focussing on these northern tribal countries and the root causes of this. They saw her being linked to the border as a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/peril-louse-assignment'>Peril Louse Assignment and task because obviously its a very fraught Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/situation-and-something'>Situation And Something that has vexed many, many previous administrations trying to figure out how to both come up with a humanitarian Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/trump-administration'>Trump Administration excepted, come up with humanitarian approach to immigration while also trying to say that the border is closed and that people need to come in the proper way. So, very politically fraught situation for the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/vice-president'>Vice President and this is why now theyre emphasizing and they have emphasized that she is going to be focussed more on diplomatic efforts, on dealing with the leaders of those countries and trying to really get at the causes of why people are leaving these countries to begin with. You know its politically fraught just how the biden administration has responded to the crisis. For a long time they didnt want to call Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/ait-a'>Ait A crisis. Maybe its not politically one you want to be tied to. That said, she does have this portfolio, right, dealing at least with the root causes of the problems. How is her work on that pr progressing . She is extremely involved in crafting the administrations regional strategy for dealing with the root causes of migration. Shes briefed regularly the national Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/security-council'>Security Council on these issues. She is meeting with Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/immigration-experts'>Immigration Experts and doing Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/round-tables'>Round Tables and shes focussed on everything from governance to Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/climate-change'>Climate Change to tackling Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/food-insecurity'>Food Insecurity in these countries to really get at what is causing these people to surge to the border, of course, corruption, gang violence, all of this is within her agreement, but she has wanted to emphasize both internally and publicly frankly her team has come out and said publicly we do not own the issues at the border, we are not managing the issues at the border this is for the secretary of Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/defense-secretary'>Defense Secretary of homeland security. This is for the people on the nse the issue in the southwest Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/united-states'>United States and the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/vice-president'>Vice President will deal exclusively with Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/di-momentsy'>Di Momentsy and this is why shes making this trip to Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/mexico-and-guatemala'>Mexico And Guatemala next week. Cruise lines are squaring off with florida governor Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/ron-desantis'>Ron Desantis after he passed a law that bans businesses from asking for proof that passengers have been vaccinated. When proof is exactly what these Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/cruise-line'>Cruise Lines need in order to stay afloat and get folks safely back on board. Joining us now is merry Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/thyme-attorney'>Thyme Attorney michael winkleman. Thank you for being with us. They want to get back out there, they want to go on vacation, you have the governor who sued the cdc back in april who get cruises back yet at the same time theres no Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/cruise-line'>Cruise Line that is supporting the governor in his effort to stop cruises from verifying the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/vaccination-or-nonvaccination'>Vaccination Or Nonvaccination of its passengers. Where is this headed . To court most likely, bree yan brianna. I think youre 100 correct. Theres pentup demand to cruising. The cdc wants to go back to cruising and get Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/governor-desantis'>Governor Desantis is trying to mess things up as much as he possibly can. And sues the cdc and tHreatening to sue the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/cruise-line'>Cruise Lines if theyre going to require these vaccine passports. Its really untenable situation. Governor desantis should keep his nose out of the cdc and the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/cruise-line'>Cruise Lines. Its not what he does. I think they will get back cruising but you cannot cruise safely without the vaccine and without proof of vaccination. Well, the federal government agrees because the guidance coming down says that basically all Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/crew-need'>Crew Need to be vaccinated and almost all, the vast majority of passengers need to be vaccinated. You know, of course, Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/cruise-ships'>Cruise Ships maritime law is something we associate with being a federal issue. And this is the federal government that is also coming down with this guidance for Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/cruise-ships'>Cruise Ships. Does the governor have a leg to stand oncoming from a state with these rules . Ill give you a legal answer and say not really. You say its federal, which is true the cdc has discretion to regulate the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/cruise-line'>Cruise Lines. Certainly in this situation where the cdc shut down cruising we see that as a unique exception to that. But i think ultimately if this does go to court i know the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/cruise-line'>Cruise Lines will fight Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/tooth-and-nail'>Tooth And Nail to say this is not valid. He doesnt have discretion to do it, et cetera. Thats one of the fun things about maritime laws you have interplay state law, international law, foreign law, theres not one plain, answer. The end of the day, the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/cruise-line'>Cruise Lines and the cdc win this battle not Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/governor-desantis'>Governor Desantis. So you think the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/cruise-line'>Cruise Lines will prevail. Well be watching, michael. Thanks for being with us. Thank you, brianna. So, with 40 of the country now fully vaccinated, there are concerns over Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/healthcare-workers'>Healthcare Workers. Healthcare workers who are not getting the vaccine. My next guest is seeing this firsthand. Shes been hepg lead the response for new Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/york-city'>York City public hospitals. She wrote in an oped, unvaccinated Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/healthcare-worker'>Healthcare Worker can present a real tHreat if they remain unconvinced and unprotected its an obstacle for getting everyone to full vaccination. Joining me now is the infectious Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/disease-epidemiologist'>Disease Epidemiologist and senior direct of systemwide Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/special-pathogens'>Special Pathogens for nyc health and hospitals. Doctor, great to have you with us. Healthcare workers, people look at that and go, what . These are the people who, a, probably should know better and, b, are on the front lines and seen it firsthand. So why . Well, i think theres a couple of things. First, its uncomfortable reality since the beginning of when Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/vaccination-rollout'>Vaccination Rollout started in december. Theres a few things when we talk about Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/healthcare-workers'>Healthcare Workers its a very broad category, physicians, Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/nurses-home-health'>Nurses Home Health aides. Its a very broad category. If we look down physicians are getting vaccinated, nurses are getting vaccinated but when you look at, you know, those that are not providing direct Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/patient-care'>Patient Care services youre seeing lower Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/vaccination-uptake'>Vaccination Uptake there. We need to do better in terms of Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/healthcare-workers'>Healthcare Workers are getting vaccinated. Thats a big part of the solution we need to get immunity across the u. S. Youre seeing this firsthand in your own life. You have home Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/healthcare-workers'>Healthcare Workers helping you care for people. Thats correct. I have four Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/home-health'>Home Health aides. Within Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/home-health'>Home Health aides theyre a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/job-category'>Job Category the lowest vaccination rates. So when we look at Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/home-health'>Home Health aides and look at people that dont want to get vaccinated theres a broad reason why. Access is one. We have on going issues with access. If we look at other reasons, we have, you know, people thinking that these vaccines are developed at a faster rate. You ask and provide more information they understand the accelerated timeline. If you look at other reasons, you look at Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/side-effect'>Side Effects also a big concern for people, but if you provide on going education, on going conversations, it helps people. What are some solutions beyond on going education. How do you feel about mandates in Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/healthcare-settings'>Healthcare Settings . Im up for mandates. Theres a couple issues here. So the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/covid19-pandemic'>Covid19 Pandemic already exposed shortages of Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/healthcare-workers'>Healthcare Workers. So if you mandate vaccination, youll see uptick in overall vaccination. But the question is how much are we willing to lose . Well see more shortages. So, its a risk benefit analysis. Its one of the things where you can mandate and want to see what will that translate into loss of Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/healthcare-worker'>Healthcare Worker shortage. Theres huge risk to being unvaccinated Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/healthcare-worker'>Healthcare Worker. We have seen that. Those working in close proximity to patients specially Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/nursing-homes'>Nursing Homes where we have seen take a huge hit since the beginning of pandemic, they certainly can pose a significant risk not to themselves but also to the residents there. Especially those that are immuno compromised. We need to do a better job ensuring that Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/healthcare-workers'>Healthcare Workers educated on all the benefits of covid19, so many things we can do, but its more of a direct conversation. Thank you for what youre doing, shining a light on this and also your daily work. Really appreciate it. Thank you. Heading into Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/memorial-day'>Memorial Day weekend, republicans killed a bipartisan commission to investigate the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/january-6th'>January 6th attack on our capitol. It was a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/gut-punch'>Gut Punch to our democracy. It died by a vote of 54 in favor to 35 votes against. You heard that right. Having a clear majority did not matter. Despite 6 republican senators, cassidy, collins, murkowski, Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/romney-and-sasse'>Romney And Sasse joining with the democrats. Kiryrsten sinema and Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/pat-toomey'>Pat Toomey say they would have voted for the commission. It would have failed with 57 votes for it and 35 against. Thats a sign that something is deeply wrong with our democracy. Remember, the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/dictionary-definition'>Dictionary Definition of democracy is government by the people, specially rule of the majority. Were experiencing a sustained assault on those ideas. Majority rule is increasingly undermined by the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/electoral-college'>Electoral College and partisan gerrymandering as well as Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/voting-restrictions'>Voting Restrictions being jammed tHrough republican legislatures. In congress, we have become numb to bills that command clear Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/majority-support'>Majority Support being blocked by minority of senators and the filibuster is almost always be Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/murder-weapon'>Murder Weapon when it comes to killing these ideas, just as it was with the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/january-6th'>January 6th commission. Even centrist Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/joe-manchin'>Joe Manchin came to the realization that republicans were not negotiating in good faith telling reporters im very disappointed that politics has trumped literally and figuratively the good of the country. Republicans backing the big lie, the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/sedition-caucus'>Sedition Caucus seem to hate democrats more than they love our democracy. What can we do . Listen to the coauthor of how democracies die on reliable sources. Democracy requires constant mending. And so we cant just simply standstill and assume that democracy is a machine that runs of itself. Joe manchin opposes ending the filibuster but this latest insult makes the case its to mend it if not end it. The filibuster is not a grand tradition. This shows how the filibuster has been abused in recent years. Used to be really rare then the talking filibuster replaced with a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/silent-hold'>Silent Hold in the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/mid-70s-combined-with-hyperpartisanship'>Mid 70s Combined With Hyperpartisanship resulted in off the rals obstruction. The filibuster may actually be hurting bipartisanship instead of helping it. Here is a common sense reform, require 41 votes to sustain a filibuster, rather than require 60 votes to overcome it. Put the pressure on the obstructionists rather than the senators trying to cause problems to cross partisan lines. This first idea, still provides plenty of protection for principled objections. And it would have allowed a vote on the bipartisan Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/january-6th'>January 6th commission to go forward. Republicans want to stop talking about the sustained attack on our democracy demands a response when Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/voting-rights'>Voting Rights are under assault and political violence is increasingly invoked. Not just by insurrectionists or Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/matt-gaetz'>Matt Gaetz Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/talking-about-second-amendment-solutions'>Talking About Second Amendment Solutions or Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/michael-flynn'>Michael Flynn supporting a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/military-coup'>Military Coup. The fallen soldiers we honored did not die for any one political party. They died for our democracy. This is really fascinating, these moments that you detail. And one of the most interesting parts and sort of a glimpse into former Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/president-bush'>President Bush is that he had a rough time coping with that sudden transition, that loss after one term from being president to private citizen. Tell us what it was like. Well, first of all, good morning, and thank you, brianna and john for having me on. Its publication day. Im so excited. What a great way to start that day with the two of you. It was tough. Its, as i say in the book, you wake up on one day, january 20th, 1993, and youre the most powerful person in the world. You live in this beautiful house. You have a great staff. You have a plane called Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/air-force'>Air Force one, and then you wake up the very next day on Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/january-21st'>January 21st and no longer have a house, a plane, a staff or a title. And its, i think, it was, even though he knew this day was coming, it was still quite jarring. So i sort of had a Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/frontrow-seat'>Frontrow Seat those first few months watching him deal with this and lick his wounds, and then suddenly one day he woke up and must have said to himself, im back. Because after that, we were off and running for the next 25 years. What i love most about this book is the stories. You tell such wonderful and specific stories, and one of the things he did where he was getting offer the loss and moving forward was, first of all, he and barbara went on a cruise. The former president of the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/united-states'>United States, former First Lady just went on a cruise . Like you can do that . And during the cruise he wrote himself a letter. What was that like . Well, first of all, john, ive been thinking a lot about that cruise the last few days ever since Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/gavin-mcleod'>Gavin Mcleod died because they basically went on a princess, the love boat. President bush was seeing these advertisements on tv for a cruise and he surprised mrs. Bush with this cruise on what i call the love boat. If he told her ahead of time she might have tried to talk him out of it. He had worked out on the ship, he was in the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/locker-room'>Locker Room taking a shower and he came out and there was a Man Waiting to take his picture. And he was stark naked. Hed only been out of the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/white-house'>White House for a month. And i think that, again, was another example of, oops, im not in the Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/white-house'>White House any longer. But youre right, john. It was on that trip that he wrote a memo to himself when he felt his postpresidency should look like. And started his goals. And one of the things he wrote in that memo is he wanted to stay out of president clintons way. He wanted to stay out of the way of the new president. He wanted to not try to define his legacy. He basically said Let Historians decide. He wanted to make a difference. He wrote, i want to make a difference. I want to get involved in several causes where i can really help. And thats exactly what he did. You had a long and wonderful relationship with him, and you talk about the five scariest words, which were jean, i have an idea. What normally came after that . It was always this time of day. He got up at 5 00 every morning, drank a pot of coffee, read tHree newspapers, and he hit the office about 7 00 a. M. Houston time. And he would plop himself in my office and say, jean, i have an idea. And sometimes it would be, lets get pizza for lunch. And i confess, i would be a little relieved. And other times it might be, jean, i want to start jumping out of airplanes again. He wasnt ready. They were married for 73 years, and he wasnt ready to lose her. But my favorite moment toward Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/the-end'>The End was about a week before she died, he was in the hospital. Shed actually gone home from the hospital, but we got word that she was headed back to the hospital by ambulance. She unfortunately had taken a downward turn, and i was at the hospital with Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/president-bush'>President Bush and i told him that she was on her way back. And after they got her settled in, he said, i would like to go see her. I want to go sit with barbara. And, quite frankly, he looked like hell. His hair was sticking straight up, had on an oxygen mask, wearing a hospital gown. He looked about as ragged as you can look. He looked like someone who had been in the hospital for a week. But they got him in his wheelchair and wheeled him into a room, and she was not in a coma, but she was somewhere else. She was in a very deep sleep. And hes just sitting there holding her hand and all of a sudden, she opened her eyes and she looked at him and said, my god, george, you are devastatingly good looking. And then she closed her eyes again and it was just such a sweet moment. She looked at him and she was still that starstruck teenager who had met him 74 years earlier. And Href='https://vimarsana.com/news/president-bush'>President Bush caught my eye and he sort of sHrugged like, well, it is what it is. Well, jean im devastatingly good looking.
