Showed what happened before the shooting took place. You see a Nissan Path finder arrived about, or three individuals who come out armed and then run right back over to the car. What you dont see is how young the crowd was at that concert venue. A lot of the victims in their 20s. Those who had been hurt. One person as young as 17. Police saying today that they believe this was all stemming from an ongoing rival between two groups. Even said that there was some sort of back and forth on Social Media that was also playing a role in this. A lot of City Leaders spoke out saying this is despicable, that it was senseless and even at that Press Conference we heard from the father of clayton diller. He actually interrupted the Press Conference, clearly very distraught. A lot of anger, pain that he was showing there. We are at the hospital where those who are injured are tonight. There are still Family Members coming and going hoping the Get News that their Loved Ones will be okay. Well get back to you. This is of course an occasion to honor the sacrifices. So many Men And Women In Uniform have made In The Name Of America and democracy. More than that though, when you go back to its original purpose, remembering The Civil War dead, the holiday exists to remind us what happens when The American experiment in democracy nearly fails. It is a Threat President biden pulled a thread he pulled. Democracy itself is in peril. Here at home and around the world. What we do now, what we do now, how we honor the memory of the fallen will determine whether or not democracy will long endure. Today, speaking where robert e. Lee once lived and owned slaves. Tonight on several fronts there are new signs the seismic forces that pulled this country apart back then are making themselves felt once again. This weekend we heard a retired threeStar General and former national Security Adviser appear to openly endorse the idea of a Military Coup. Well bring you more details what he said. We begin with the effort to restrict voting in texas. Something this general and his followers are apparently now using i knu use. At least 14 states have enacted 22 new laws restricting access to the vote. There they are on the map. And the number could soon triple. At least 61 bills with restricted provisions are moving through 18 state legislatures. Including in texas until Last Night. Last night, democrats in the State House representatives walked out preventing a quorup on State Senate Bill 7. At midnight, it delayed the measure at least until governor calls them back for a Special Session which he says he will. As for whats in the bill, they deny it is intended to disenfranchise minority voters, especially blacks. However, it contains provisions that could. It outlaws driveup Voting And 24hour voting, both used in the highly democratic houston area. I bans voting before 1 00 p. M. On sundays which would effectively kill souls to the Polls Programs which are very popular. And they require anyone driving two nonrelatives to submit a signed form stating the reason for providing transportation. And the reason for these and other restricted measures, listen to texas republican State Representative Briscoe cane who chairs the House Election Committee and has been spearheading the bill. This isnt about party. This isnt about what happened in d. C. This isnt about 2020 or 2018 or even before that. This is about instilling confidence in the electorate. They feel like what happens in their government, the laws that are made was because they chose to. Keeping it honest, the only reason there is any talk about a lack of confidence in the election regarding the vote is because the former president and his followers have pushed and pushed and pushed the big lie. Heres what keith ingram, the director of elections, had to say about the elections in 2020. In spite of all the circumstances, texas had an election that was smooth and secure. Similarly, there were no widespread irregularities in 2018. Not in texas or anywhere else in the country. As for chairman cains assertion that this isnt about 2020, Take A Look at where he was in 2020. In philadelphia. Were looking to see if there is any funny business going on. He is in philadelphia interviewing Poll Workers and watchers. Hes volunteering for President Trumps legal team in the historic challenge against Election Results in the state. So the guy who said this has nothing to do with 2020 was in philadelphia which is a long way from texas where his job is looking for quote unquote funny business. Now hes back home in texas to instill confidence. Thats the way these laws are being sold as Confidence Boosters by the same laufs working so hard to undermine confidence in a system thats not broken. People have been unfatherly undermining the confidence in the electoral process are the very same people trying to pass laws because they say people dont have confidence in the electoral process. Live in dallas. We touched on some of this bill. Can you tell us about how this would impact voting in texas . A few other measure thats you didnt mention. Pun that would essentially increase the access that partisan Poll Watchers would have inside Polling Locations all across texas. And theres some provisions in there that essentially would lower the standard for a judge to overturn the results of an election. So there is a great deal of concern about those different types of measures that are included in this bill as well. And what is really fascinating, theres a prominent u. S. Congressman from just north of austin, michael mccall, who told cnn yesterday, he thought this bill is about optics. Not really pointing to any fraud or repetitive fraud that would be a concern for wanting to pass a bill like this but simply described it as something driven more by optics. I dont quite understand. The argument of having Voting Start at 1 00 p. M. On sundays and not before, you know, a lot of democrats are saying this is clearly targeting successful souls to the Polls Programs which bring people from churches to polling places. So its convenient. What is the argument for saying that whats the problem with that . The way republicans talk about this bill, the very title of it is a voter integrity bill. It goes back once again to creating this atmosphere and talking about this issue as if this bill is designed to ensure the integrity, to ensure the confidence that millions of people across the state of texas might have. Democrats are saying, this is essentially a bill that is catering to the far right wing of this party. You have republicans here in this state who are essentially trying to find that, where they coalesce with trump on a national level. You have the governor of texas who is facing a primary challenge in his run for reelection nextier. So all of these issues really may to the right wing republican base and many democrats are saying, thats exactly who theyre catering to with these measures. Appreciate it. Texas State Representative Chris turner led the walkout. Hes chairman. House democratic caucus. I spoke to him just before air time. Chairman turner, you sent a Text Message to every democrat In The House Last Night at 10 35. And it read, take your key, leave the chamber discreetly, leave the building. How did this Walkout Strategy come about . Sure. It was in development several hours. It was one piece of a much larger strategy that had been underway all day and in the days leading up to yesterday. The big picture, 67 members of the House Democratic Caucus were united. All session long in our efforts to kill the republican efforts to suppress the vote in texas. Thats what we set out to do. Thats what we ended up doing on the second to the last day. So throughout the course of sunday, which was the last day for the texas legislate Tower Pass bills in the regular session, we had a strategy to delay and slow down Senate Bill 7. And ultimately, kill it. And we set out to do that by picking up other bills ahead of it, pushing it closer to the Midnight Deadline and then spending a lot of time procedural maneuvers and then speaking against the legislation. Any member can speak against the bill. So we burned several hours doing all those things. We knew the republicans held a Trump Card being able to shut off debate if they really wanted to. And it is a got closer to midnight, we sensed they were about to do that. I did send that Text Message. Several people had left knowing this was coming. A lot of members were already gone. For the remaining members, we wanted to do that. Greg abbott has indicated hell call them back in a Special Session to fast bill. In a statement, he said he expects legislators to work out their differences prior to arriving back in the capitol. He threatened to veto funding for legislators paychecks. If they can pass the law, did that just delay the inevitable . Thats a fair question. There is no Question Republicans have the votes to pass it. They control the house and the senate. But democrats in the legislature and the house in particular are determined. And we are battle tested. We know how to fight. And were used to being outnumbered. Were not used to being outworked and were not used to being outsmarted and i think thats what you saw. We used every tool in our Tool Box to delay the passage of the bill. Thats what we did. We Cant Control what Governor Abbott does in a Special Session. The governor has that power. Just to be clear, if he calls a Special Session and this is the focus, they have the votes to pass it. You dont have as you said, you used all the tools that you had. Theres no more tools left, are there . Well, in a Special Session of the clock starts over. It is 30 days. This bill does not take off. Special session, they have to write a new bill, file a new bill. It has to go through the committee process, through both chambers. The clock starts over. They have the power absolutely. They can pass anything they want in those circumstances. It does have to go through the process again. Well have to evaluate the situation as it develops. It is impossible the predict. There are those who say look, State Representatives are elected to debate the issues, cast their votes and semithe votes of the chamber. Not walk out when they dont like how a bill is headed. How do you respond to that . So State Representatives are elected to represent their constituents. Thats exactly what 67 members did Last Night. Whether they left or they stayed in the chamber, they all fought. By stopping a bill, creating a harmful market on our communities, thats what we achieve, then we have fought for our constituents and we have done our job. And thats why im so proud of all the members. I appreciate your time. Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you for having me. A lot more ahead on miamidade, the Surveillance Video around the time of the shooting. And then later, did Michael Flynn endorse the idea of a myanmar Style Coup in the united states . Reporter newly released Surveillance Video shows three individuals jumping out of an Suv Video before Opening Fire in a crowded hall just after midnight sunday. The three get back into their car and take off less than ten seconds later. We have a total of 23 people who were shot. Two were deceased on the scene. All three of the shooters still at large. We need your help. We need you to come forward if you have information to help us solve these crimes. This Afternoon Miamidade police found the suv they say the suspects were driving sunday morning. It was submerged in the Biscayne Canal approximately nine miles from where the shooting occurred. The vehicle was reported stolen on may 15. High emotions for those left behind. You all killed my kid. Clayton Dillon Jr. Lost his son, clayton iii. In shooting. That is the pain that affects our community. The Tv Host and Camping World Ceo marcus has pledged 100,000 reward for anyone with information that leads to the arrest of those responsible. Separately, Crime Stoppers and the Miami Atf are offering a 30,000 reward. We will bring them to justice and work together to break this cycle of violence. Miamidade county determined to get this cycle of Gun Violence in their city under control. Were investing in young people that have been disenfranchised from the process, left behind. None of them were born with ak47s in their hands. None of them were born killers. What are authorities saying about a possible motive . This morning authorities that this was something that stemmed from an ongoing rival i between two groups. They even that there was some sort of back and forth on Social Media and even called this a targeting shooting. Now that they have that suv, that is a key piece of evidence that will help piece together the puzzle. Today, they talked about some of the greatest challenges and fears. Among challenges for investigators, what they said was the Code Of Silence, that they really need more help from the community in getting more information. Thats why you heard that appeal from the mayor saying, please give us information even anonymously. As for what their greatest fear is, they fear if they dont get to the bottom of this quickly, we may see retaliation. Thanks very much. You heard a bid from the miamidade mayor in her report. Thanks so much for being with us. Im sorry it is under these circumstances. Now that this vehicle has been found, are authorities any closer to narrowing in . You know this video was so critical and people are calling. There are tips coming in. People are able to perhaps identify some of the shooters. Other information. So were very hopeful that we can place the shooters very, very soon. Its extraordinary seeing that video when you watch the clock as well, realizing how quickly the shots were fired, this whole thing was under ten seconds with so many people, two dead, and so many injured. They said it stemmed from an ongoing rivalry between two groups and the intended target was believed to be standing in front of the couldnt certain venue. Can you say anything more about the groups . You know, theyre being monitored. These are groups that are kind of loosely called gangs. They may be taunting Each Other on Social Media, may be in ram music. These are clues as well. And as you said, they fear further retaliation. We have to get to these people and make the stop. This indiscriminate shooting into a crowd. Someone they want to target may be there. It is just a cowardly, heinous act. Is fear of Retaliation Part of the investigation . Theres often a Code Of Silence in a lot of communities or concern about coming forward, talking to police about anything. Yes. Were very hopeful. There have been a lot of tips received. We have our Police Department working around the clock. It is together with municipal, state and federal agents all working together. Were very hopeful. I want to say this is also about a broader initiative to stop crime at the root. We need to focus on prevention and early intervention and thats why the Peace And Prosperity plan that ive developed is so valuable. We need to give children heading down the wrong path a chance to have a brighter future, to have opportunities for good jobs, and all of that will be in this plan and were investing more into the investigation, State Attorney general prosecution and cameras in key areas of shooting and violence. Do you know, do you have any update on the shooting victims still hospitalized . I heard that a few more have been released. Of course, we have a few in critical care. So were standing by. Were praying, watching. And our victim advocates are working all the families who were there and working them to get as much information as we possibly can while we pray for the survival of those shot. I appreciate your time. Thank you. Thank you. The former national Security Adviser general Michael Flynn is declaring the man who pardoned him after he admitted lying to the fbi actually won in last Areas Election when he won the Electoral College and the Popular Vote. He was joined by Sidney Powell who also made a career out of saying false things about tleks. But flynn didnt stop there. At a meeting attended by some qanon believers, he talked about a coup in the united states. I want to know why, what happened in Myanmar Cant happen here. No reason. A former u. S. Army alone general and former national Security Adviser appearing to endorse a Military Coup here in the united states. Trump won he won the Popular Vote here and he won the Electoral College vote. Michael flynn spent memorial Day Weekend at a concert in dallas attended by qanon supporters. So, too did sydney powell. He represented flynn and said the media had grossly distorted his comments. She denied flynn had end couraged violence or military insurrection but she didnt explain What Flynn had men. Powell spoke of removing biden from office over the weekend. Were definitely in uncharted territory. There are cases where elections have overturned but there is never been one at the president ial level, which everybody will jump to appointment out. That doesnt mean that it cant be done. It should be that he can simply be reinstated. That a new Inauguration Date is set. And biden is told to move out of the house. And President Trump should be moved back in. The heavily criticized republican led in arizona has given followers of quoounl and the big Lie Hope that the election could still be overturned. Some are finding inspiration in the deadly Military Coup in myanmar as a way to put trump back in power. Flynns comments were seen as an endorsement as a kulecoup. There were 70,000 followers on telegram writing, General Flynn said the quiet parts out loud. Earlier this year, trump supporters in california also cheered on the coup. Biden is like a puppet president. Whats happening in myanmar, the military is doing their open investigation and at the right time, theyll be restoring the republic with trump as president. The government took open, correct . That could possibly happen here, possibly. Would you like the see it happen . Yes. Do you know why . Because the election was stolen from us. Now, Michael Flynn appears to have made additional comments about this controversy. What is he now saying . Thats right. He is today saying his words have been twisted somehow. That he is not actually calling for a coup. But look, you heard the comments there in that piece. And this Quoanon Conference was devoted to overturning the election. You heard Sidney Powell talking about a new inauguration day. This talk of a coup is something that has been circulating for months now in the Qanon Conspiracy World that both Powell And Filppula live in. I spend a lot of time reading these pro trump forms online. And speaking to trump supporters. And i will say, of all the Conspiracy Theories we hear, and all the different ideas, this talk from americans about a coup, cheering on a coup, hoping for a coup in the united states is one of the most chilling things that i hear on the road. Appreciate it. Joining me now, Vice Chair of the house armed services committee. Also a retired Navy Commander and represents a district with a heavy military presence. Thank you for joining us on this Memorial Weekend and all weekend. As a former service member, to hear Michael Flynn, a retired three Star Army general, former national Security Adviser, appearing to suggest that a myanmar Style Coup should, could and should happen in the united states is stunning. To you as someone who swore an oath to the constitution, how do you, how is this happening . When i hear these words, this is dangerous. This is just the Prom Gags of further lies and in my mind, inciting violence. I heard some of the supporters of the former president remarking before i came on. And it is dangerous that someone who served our country and retired as a three Star General is using that position, that title, that voice to incite violence. Essentially to encourage people to overthrow government as was done in myanmar and it is incredibly concerning. As someone who served in the military, i mean, is it possible to reconcile the sense of only had and duty exemplified by the vast majority of service members with the things that General Flynn continues to say . Hes clearly gone down this Ran Hole of conspiracies. Hes used the qanon slogan, hes praised it. Does it make sense how somebody makes an arc like he has made . It doesnt make sense. You ask if theres a way to reconcile it. It is irreconcilable. There are a lot of questions about whether someone who has served in the military continues to receive Retirement Benefits as a retired officer. He receives 164,000 a year in. At a Pair Money in his position as a retiree and a former general. And the fact hes making these kinds of comments, recommending there should be a coup to overthrow the u. S. Government is unconscionable and i truly believe that actions should be taken against General Flynn. You mentioned the kind of language is dangerous. We saw that on January 6th. Weve heard from a number of federal judges who echoed that saying in response to cases they had before them of Couldnt Spear or thes, or people who took part in the attack. Do you think, has the problem subsided, do you think . Or has anything changed since the insurrection . It has not. I keep hearing it growing and the suggestions continue to become more and more violent in nature. I would say General Flynns Remarks Border on sedition. They are certainly unbecoming an officer. Those are both things that can be tried you said the Uniform Code of military justice. I think as a retiree of the military, it should certainly be a path that we consider to have consequences for these types of work. You really think this is possibly sedition . I think it is. If you look at the definition of sedition as defined in the Uniform Code of military justice, it is a person with an intent to cause or overthrow or destruction of lawful civil authority. It is very clear that in suggesting a coup, a Military Coup to overthrow our government, that that falls to me within the definition of sedition under the Uniform Code of military justice. I appreciate your time. Thank you. Yes, thank you. Coming up, we catch up with one of the republican senators who voted not to establish that commission to investigate the January 6th riots. Like most of his republican colleagues, he voted against establishing the Bynum Commission to investigate not only the facts. January 6th riots but what led to the insurrection in the first place. Like most of his fellow senators, he went back home without getting much of a public explanation for why he vote the way he did. It didnt stop gary from trying to get one. He traveled to kansas for the memorial holiday. He attend Ad Ceremony on a Rainy Day to honor the war dead. This is part of what he said. I know it takes a lot of courage to come here today but i want you to know that you inspire me and so many other folks. He joins me now from ft. Riley. After the event i understand you asked him about his vote. What did he say . Reporter well, some more information about roger marshall. Hes a physician, an army member, a former member of the house of representatives, he is in his first term in the u. S. Senate. When Donald Trump was in the white house, he was a fervent trump loyalist. Your Words Today were eloquent and moving regarding our heroes who served our country. I want to ask but another hero, officer Brian Sicknick who protected you, other senators, congress people on capitol hill. His mother, did she meet with you . She did. And other republican senators. Right. Yet you voted no on the January 6th commission. Why couldnt you put politics aside and voted yes is that honored his memory . Well, my decision was not based on politics. My decision was based on that we already have seven committees In The House looking at this. Two in the senate. There are four in the executive branch. Ment is it important to have one independent investigation like there have been in so many other things in this countrys history, 9 11, other things . If you you a problem politically, why not just say no. This has been investigated and all the committee theres do their job. You think it has been investigated . President trumps role . I think it is being investigated. I think it is being very thoroughly investigated. Already the January 6th commission has come out and said we need to spend 1 Billion to investigate. Theres only one question i want answered. When President Trump recommended we had 15,000 National Guard troops on January 6th, who stopped that from happening . Most of us would think that type of decision would have been made in the speakers office. You think that insurrection would have happened if President Trump didnt say to people, go to the capitol. I think that the people who committed that crime should be held in judgment for their own actions. Dont you feel badly that President Trump said that . Doesnt it make you feel a little bad about voting no on this . I made the best decision i could. Its a decision of the heart. I think it is the right decision. I think in so many ways this has been politicized by speaker pelosi. If she had not politicized it and made it into a weapon. If she could have made this a bipartisan commission, they would have appointed the lawyers who investigated it, it should have been appointed by both parties. But the democrats did say, they agreed to all these provisions if you had the provision. Would you not agree . She had every chance to start off in a bipartisan fashion with this investigation. You dont think it was bipartisan. It is absolutely not bipartisan. You stand by your vote. Of course i do. So we were curious if in any way the senator regretted his vote. It seem like he regrets nothing. Thank you. In addition to memorial day, today, in a centennial of the massacre in oklahoma. It reads, i call upon the people of the united states to commemorate the tremendous loss of Life And Security that occurred in those two days in 1921 to celebrate the Bravery And Resiliency of those who committed to eradicate systemic Racism And Help to rebuild communities and lives that have been destroyed by it. The new Cnn Film with the massacre premieres tonight. It is called dreamland, the burning of black Wall Street. It talks about greenwood, oklahoma. What is being done to restore its legacy. Parts of this film are they are also necessary to keep the memory of tulsa alive. I can confirm we have identitified a large hole, in into which several individuals have been placed. This constitutes a Mass Grave. Tonight, scientists believe they have found evidence of a Mass Grave in oklahoma. Reporter more than a year after work started at oak lawn cemetery, the team found human remains. Today is a significant moment, in the history of our city, in trying to do right by the victims of this event. When i heard that they found 12 bodies, i said, finally finally, its no longer folklore. Its no longer a rumor. Its true. And thats going just to be the beginning of justice. And selena, the director of the film, joins us now. This is a really extraordinary film. We just heard the President Talk about the tulsa massacre, today. What was it that brought you to reexamine the the story of what happened there . I think there are a lot of things. One, was the opportunity to explore this time in american history. Where black people had created this utopia. And in america. So, just being able to tell that story. But then, also, when i pitched it, it was, you know, in 2019, 2020, where america was also sort of looking back at its own, racial pact. Past. And having to reckon with the injustices that have happened. So i think that really drew drew me to the story. And i mean, for a long time, this was not in History Books and for those who dont know what happened in tulsa, A Hundred years ago, i mean, the Skie Size and the scope. The horror of the violence and the destruction is really staggering. Yes. This was two nights or two days of terror, ultimately. It was a Community Of of black people. And across the tracks, was another community, of white people. And through, you know, jealousy and and and an event that happened, between a young, black boy, and a young, white girl. It, you know, ended in this two days of destruction. I mean, how how far have we come, since then . I mean, we you know, we obviously, we have seen what this country has gone through, just in the last year alone, since the killing of george floyd. You know, we we see things, now, that we didnt. I mean, imagine if there had been cameras, you know, in tulsa, at that at that time. It wouldnt, perhaps, have changed it, in the moment. But at least, there would be the fact that theres not a recording. You dont really see these images. It we see things, now, that we didnt before. Well, you know what . I would say that tulsa, 1921, didnt just happen. The massacre didnt just happen, and thats the end of the story. There is A Hundred years of history, that this this enclave, this town, greenwood, still, exists and they are dealing with things today. And so, i guess, the question is, how far have we come . We can look at Greenwood Today and see that greenwood is not what it once was. And then, we can ask ourselves how far have we come . You know, we havent even done the rep the repairing to this community, to the three survivors, who who still live in tulsa. And surrounding areas, today. We havent rectified for the the descendants, as well. So, how far have we come . Im not sure how far weve come, anderson. Weve seen communities across the country. I was in africa a few years ago. In africa town, which is a small community in alabama, which was formed by the last people from the last ship that brought Enslaved Africans to alabama. Just in the start of of The Civil War. And and that was, once, a thrivingblack community, as well, in the 1920s, 1930s. A highway was, then, you know, put through the center of the town. Its happened so often, where do you put a highway . We well, lets just put it through the black part of town and the community breaks up. Thats exactly what happened in greenwood. It happens it happened all across america in black neighborhoods. Where highways were built, right in the middle of these thriving communities. Greenwood went through what was called urban renewal. And what happened was a lot of people were taken out of their homes. And the city were was using that land for other things. So, The Descendants Of Tulsa the descendants of this massacre. They are, still, dealing with with these things today. Youre absolutely right. Yeah. Its really just an extraordinary film. Thank you so much for being with us. Thank you. Dreamland. The burning of black Wall Street premieres in just a few minutes at 9 00 p. M. Here on cnn. Ahead, kcovid, memorial day and what A World Of Difference a year can make.
