Fight. An uproar in brazil. Tens of thousands of protesters calling for the impeachment of President Bolsonaro for how he has handled the pandemic. Good to have you with us. A Battle Over Voting Rights in the u. S. Is being waged in texas with a dramatic pause in the fight just a few hours ago. Texas democrats foiled a sweeping republican measure for now, at least. The bill would Ban Unso listitted mailin ballots, and expands access to partisan poll watchers. Republic republicans in the Texas House were up against a midnight approval, and democrats walked off the floor leaving them without the minimum number of members to vote. The governor has indicated he will call a special session to restart the process. When this bill came to the floor we thought we would be able to have a real serious conversation, a real conversation, because this bill affects every person in texas, including republicans. We were told time and time again by the Secretary Of State our elections were safe and secure, and its a Witch Hunt that is aimed at people of color. We are going back centuries. Instead of working on problems, instead of making our state a better place for every texan, we spent time on guns and trying to restrict their rights at the polls. Earlier a republican congressman in texas said the legislature was trying to restore confidence in the election process. We can debate how much fraud occurred in the last election, and democrats claimed fraud happened in the previous elections, but one thing is clear to me, jake, a lot of the american people seem to have lost faith in our government, and they have lost faith in our elections, and we need to restore it. Texas democrat, sheila jackson lee, doesnt see it that way. This is ludicrous. Let me tell you why. I think you heard some of the facts, and it was the department of Homeland Security that gave the crowning final statement about the 2020 election and they consistently said they found absolutely no fraud, and the Big Lie is crushing truth and the vote to the very earth. Joining me now is jessica levenson, a professor of law at Loyola Law School and the host of the passing judgment podcast. Good to have you with us. Good to be back. The state of texas has been debating one of the most restrictive Voting Bills in the country that would create challenges for voters of color, particularly. Is that what this is all about, shutting out black and latino voters . Yes. I wish i could say otherwise, but the answer is yes because they tend to vote for democratic candidates. This is not about trying to make our elections safer or have more integrity. This is about Voter Suppression. Theres simply no evidence to indicate that these are true solutions. Theres plenty of evidence to indicate that this is just Voter Suppression because the demographics in states like texas are changing and we have seen what happens when higher Voter Turnout tends to be better for democrats in texas. Texas is red turning purple, eventually turning blue and this is the way to ensure that democrats dont win elections according to the number of registered democrats in the state. So jessica, how loud of a voice is pushing against this . What are some of the worst Voting Restrictions you see this this bill . So there are voices that are loudly opposing this, and i think one of the most disgraceful things is that this has become a partisan issue, and that this is democrats versus republicans. Whether or not we make it difficult for eligible voters to actually vote should not be a partisan issue and yet here we are and it is. What are the big challenges here . Lets think about what the law would do. It would make it harder to vote by mail. You cant automatically be sent a vote by mail ballot, and you have to each time request a ballot and on that request you have to have your Drivers License or social Security Number and that information has to appear again on the envelope for your Return Ballot and it would eliminate Ballot Drop boxes and eliminate longer voting hours, and it would restrict voting on early voting on sundays, and restrict drivethrough voting, and all the ways we make it easier for certain voters that have less time and less resources to weigh in. Theres Nothing Magic that happens on a Tuesday Election day. Your vote counts just as much and is just as likely to be free of fraud on a sunday or a saturday as it is on a tuesday. So all these things making it harder to vote by mail, restricting the avenues where we can vote, and the Drop Boxes and drivethrough, all of these things are making it more difficult in areas where there are concentrated people of color to weigh in on who their elected officials will be. Of course, meantime we have seen recounts continue in arizona and georgia. What might they signal for the 2022 midterms and the 2024 president ial elections, and how much of a threat do multiple recounts like these pose to democracy . Well, all of this poses a really serious threat to democracy. Again, because these are ways to restrict votes or in the case of a recount to try and call into question valid votes without any reason. This recount in arizona, we should find a new word for it. It should not be called a recount because that is something legitimate. What is happening here is there were allegations of fraud based on nothing, and theres a partisan group trying to look under the hood and find errors that dont exist. Is this a threat go into the midterms . Yes, people should feel that when they vote in america that that is safe, that we are not trying to trump up charges of fraud. The idea that were now playing electoral hardball with our Voting Laws and these recounts is so desisspiriting to voters, and the way around it is to turn out and vote. Thats the lesson in all of this, isnt it. Thank you for joining us. Appreciate it. Thank you. U. S. Prosecutors have now charged four more defendants in the federal criminal Conspiracy Case against the right Wing Oath keepers group. They allegedly prepared for and took part in the January 6th capitol riot. This case is the largest against any of the far right extremist groups that took part in the insurrection. Israel prime Minister Netanyahu is fighting for his political few uture, as his riv from the center left and right are working to form a Unity Government without him. A right Wing Leader announced the plans on sunday night, but mr. Netanyahu was quick to go on the attack in the response. Translator there is no right wing government, four rounds of elections in the past two months prove that its not led by netanyahu. Its either a fifth election. Translator also, somebody who is perpetrating, i must say, the fraud of the century. If a formal agreement is reached on the emerging coalition it will still have to be approved by israels parliament. We are joined live from jerusalem. Good to see you. What do netanyahus rivals need to do next to make this a reality and oust him as Prime Minister . In practical terms, the various parties that are opposed, the socalled Change Block that oppose netanyahu are still meeting as i understand it from a spokesman, they were meeting until 3 00 this morning. They are ironing out some of the details among themselves. They have until midnight on wednesday israel time, and thats the time for them to say, yes, i have a coalition that can get the votes, and then it will be up to a week within which the parliament will vote whether to approve or not approve this governing coalition. Basically they need more than half of the people in the governing coalition. At the same time, of course, Theres Plenty of prime Minister Netanyahu will be trying to do at the same time, and they will try and persuade and encourage their base to persuade members, especially of the right Wing Party of bennett to defect and disagree and object to the formation of this coalition government. Indeed outside the Tel Aviv Home of the number two to bennett, there have been protests outside her home trying to encourage her to do the right thing for the right Wing Base and not go into what netanyahu has said is a left wing government, and there could be also an extremist, there could be some kind of attempt to get the courts involved that Bennett Cannot be the Prime Minister first, so i am sure that and others will be tried by netanyahu. He will do everything in his considerable powers to try and avoid being removed from office, but certainly for the first time in 12 years we are as close as we have ever been to seeing that happen. Joining us live from jerusalem. Many thanks. The emerging coalition is across the political spectrum and its not clear what unites them beyond a shared desire for new leadership. I call it a kaleidoscope of a government, but on the other hand its a beautiful idea, bringing the right wing together with the left wing and center. Bennett has had success in business and came into government, was pragmatic. H hes an ideologue, and he is a reformer, and he got reforms when he was Minister Of Education and defense, and he knows how to work with people on the other side of the aisle, and the people from the other side of the aisle have also shown a maturity, an idea that they can put their egos aside for the better of the country and thats what this is about. Will it last . Will it have lasting powers, because as you said, there are major challenges . What do you do with the palestinians . How do you manage those situations. What if there is pressure from the u. S. Administration to Settlement Construction . You have people on the right that want to build and people on the left that want to freeze . How do you management . How do we advance israel out of the nearly three years of political instability, mudslinging, no State Budget . This is what they need to focus on. I think if they are mature and understand that and it seems they do, they can move forward and potentially succeed. The u. S. Missile Defense Agency says a u. S. Warship failed to intercept a Ballistic Missile on sunday. The whole idea is its a Navy Ship out there equipped with something called the standard missile, a very advanced and hightech, and they were testing to see if they could fire a salvo of those missiles of what would have been a simulated Ballistic Missile target, and not a real Ballistic Missile, but you launch something that is a target and you try and shoot it down and that will tell you if your Missile Defenses work, and this time it didnt work, so an investigation under way into the failed test. The u. S. Is working to fine tune its Missile Defenses to guard against threats from countries like north korea. Covid numbers are dropping in the u. S. As americans come out in droves to mark memorial Day Weekend. Well look at that just ahead. A. The covid19 vaccines are here. Its up to you. Racing fans were revved up to return to the track on sunday at the indianapolis 500. This Years Race was still limited to 40 capacity but all 135,000 tickets sold out almost immediately. The event was billed as the u. S. Sporting event with the most fans to attend inperson since the pandemic began more than a year ago. When the final flag waived, the 46yearold brazilian won tieing a record. This time last year the pandemic had only been around for a few months. On the left is Jones Beach, new york, back then. Covid deaths just passed 1,000 deaths in the u. S. We were six months away from the first authorized covid19 vaccines. On the right is Jones Beach on sunday. Travelers up, and covid19 cases are down and just over half of the population has received at least one dose of a vaccine. Two very different pictures of the u. S. Memorial Day Weekend there. Cnns paul is in Los Angeles where parade, barbecues and Pool Parties have the go ahead in most places. Reporter memorial Day Weekend, Los Angeles, the return of the Swan Boats at echo park lake. Its reopened after 600,000 worth of renovations. An upbeat mood in Los Angeles, because the covid19 numbers are good, very low positivity rate. The only Dark Cloud We Ran Into is people getting gas. Its painful. A little over 4. 20 average in l. A. County. One man in a Chevy Silverado Truck telling us its costing about 100 to fill up. Its costing me about almost 100. Its hard, especially now that theres not that many jobs, you know, and were in a bad Situation Economy wise, so i feel like its too overpriced. Back on this lake, looking forward to the coming weeks when we are going to have a further easing of restrictions in Los Angeles, but for now people taking in echo park lake, just enjoying a picture perfect postcard Memorial Day in Los Angeles. Joining me now is professor of epidemiology at the Ucla Fielding of public health. Great to be here. Wonderful. We are now seeing the u. S. Returning to some level of normalcy with so many americans now vaccinated, but still around 20 or so hesitant about getting their shot. How concerned are you that those refusing to get their shots and the impact that that may have . Well, Rosemary, i think that its important to pause for a minute and see think about how far we have come, which is really terrific. We are now at a position where we have more than 50 of the population with at least one shot. Thats really fantastic news, and we have still 50 of the population not vaccinated. Now we got through the easy Part And Everybody was rushing to get their vaccine and now we are having a lot of people on the fence, and now we have to work hard to get to the other side. There was an interesting analysis in the Washington Post the other day that suggested even in a place like washington where you have high rates in vaccinations, in Unvaccinated Areas this virus is still spreading rapidly, and if you are vaccinated you are very well protected at this point and can get back to living life normally in many, many ways. For those unvaccinated, theres still a great risk. Such an important message. Of course, other parts of the world still suffering like india and brazil, and we see a rise in Uk Cases despite the Vaccine Rollout that has been very successful there. Then parts of europe, a Concern Reinstituting some covid restrictions. Will this be what happens until the majority of people are vaccinated, this Bouncing Backwards and forwards and lifting restrictions, and life getting back to normal and having to take a few steps back particularly with the variants out there in the mix . Well, i think the one thing that this pandemic has driven home is an infection anywhere is a potential infection everywhere, and we are going to be playing whackamole until we have the vast majority of the world vaccinated, as we have discussed many times on the show. When you do not have the vast majority of the population vaccinated, there are more cases that will arise and more cases mean more opportunity for mutations, and more mutations mean we could see more variants spreading like the India Variant that will create havoc in many places, and thats why we are seeing restrictions back in place. Right. Of course i do want to touch on the debate over the origins of covid19, because we need to know the origins of the virus to prevent this ever happening again, as it has been pointed out by medical experts. With china pushing back so hard on this, will we ever likely know for sure . What is your sense . Was this likely a Lab Accident or a virus moving naturally from an animal to humans . Well, Rosemary, i dont know which it is. Nobody at this point, at least, you know, here in the United States or anybody that i know knows exactly what happened. There are two hypotheses. One it was a natural spillover from animal to human, and thats a reasonable hypothesis, and the other hypothesis this was a Lab Accident is another reasonable high p hypothesis, and we need to gather data to determine whether or not the data supports a natural Spillover Event or a lab leak. Listen, there are people who were sick back in 2019 from the lab. It would be very interesting to understand has anybody looked where samples were collected, and have there been surveys conducted to see if many of the people who were at the institute have antibodies, and we cannot say reasonably if its one hypothesis or the other that is actually correct, but we need to know because thats how we will prevent the next pandemic, with information. Thank you for joining us. Always a pleasure. Coronavirus concerns are growing with about 53 days to the olympics. Australian softball players are on their way to japan, among the first athletes to travel to the games. The team departed from sidney a short time ago and are set to land in tokyo in the coming hours and when they do they will arrive as japan is under an extended State Of Emergency due to covid19. The countrys Prime Minister has called the situation unpredictable. Cnns Angus Watson is following the developments for us from sidney. He joins us live. Good to see you. Talk to us about the australian softball Teams Journey to the Tokyo Olympics and how concerned are they about the situation in japan . Well, there was some apprehension at the airport earlier ahead of their takeoff, Rosemary. This otherwise would be such an exciting time. A lot of olympians going to play at their first games, but coronavirus was, of course, all that anybody could talk about. They will have a long trip to japan via singapore, and when they get there they will have to prove to the authorities they have met all the stringent Coronavirus Protocols they would have had to met to be there, and they will have to prove they have had their vaccinations and a negative test, and they will live in a bubble ahead of the games and will have to be testing every day. The reason they are going so early is because coronavirus disrupted their plans so much so they have not played together since 2019. These are all struggles the olympians are saying they are willing to meet. Heres what one player said to me earlier. We will go through lots and lots of covid testing, but, look, were all prepared for it. We want to do everything we can to make sure were safe when we get there and were safe in japan as well. Reporter the safety of people in japan is something that is on the minds of so many in that country, so much so that the government has extended a State Of Emergency as you say right up until the 20th of june. That is just a month before the olympics are set to begin, and thats because cases in places like tokyo are just too high. Hospitalizations are just too high. A lot of people in japan are nervous about the olympics even going ahead, Rosemary. Thats a remarkable situation. Angus watson, keeping a close eye on that, joining us live from sidney. Appreciate it. The World Health Organization is investigating a possible new Coronavirus Variant in vietnam. The w. H. O. Is working with the Countrys Health Ministry after four people were confirmed infected. The suspected variant looks like it has some characteristics of variants first detected in india and the uk. One top w. H. O. Official says they expect to see more variants emerge. About half of the vaccines will go to Health Care and Health Care workers and people over 45. The country has the ability to produce its own vaccines, yet it still suffered from Supply Shortages and has been unable to deliver on promised vaccines to the government covax program. They are hoping it will ensure better planning by states. Starting today france will require british travelers to quarantine for a week when entering the country, and its due to a rise of new Covid Infections in the uk, and even with a relatively low case rate, experts say britain is still battling the spread of the variant first identified in india. We are joined live from london with more on this. Good to see you. Cases are going up again in the uk despite the successful Vaccine Rollout there. What are Health Experts saying about this . Theres now rising concern, Rosemary, in the expert circles and the government advisers about the socalled indian variant that originated in india. As you mentioned, initially there was optimism within the government and scientists, some confidence that the Vaccine Variant would be sufficient to keep that indian variant at bay, and things have started to change over the last week or so. The data that the government has received is painting a slightly more precarious picture. We have seen an increase of about 25 of cases in the united kingdom over the last seven days. While the cases are still low, this is a concerning development that we are seeing taking place. The government is making all the decisions, they say, based on this data. So through the 21st of June End of lockdown in danger, because Boris Johnson said they would need to change or delay that date, but things are looking murkier now, and the scientists that have come out and speak about the indian variant says we are on the cusp of a decisive moment, and everybody is hanging in the balance at the moment. There has been approximately 39 Million first doses of vaccine and 25 Million double doses of vaccine, so the country is doing well relatively speaking. It might not be doing well enough to stop the spread of the indian variant, and thats because after two vaccines it takes about three weeks to get yourself up to top immunity. At the moment theres a Question Mark over whether or not the vaccines work effectively on the indian variant. Initially it looked like that was the case and now people are not so sure, so until we get more data in britain to understand that, it does appear that the lockdown the end of lockdown could be delayed. Thats because some key questions about this socalled indian variant remain and thats its true Level O F trance missability. And in brazil, Tens Of Thousands marched across the country over the weekend. They are unhappy with the president s handling of the pandemic and want better access to vaccines. The coronavirus has been raging Out Of Control there. Brazil reported more than 43,000 new cases on sunday alone. The Death Toll is now above 460,000. Cnns Rafael Romo has more on the protests now. Reporter screaming at the top of their lungs, people on the streets say the leader of their country must go. It was one of the massive protests held this weekend against the president. Its our duty to fight for democracy, this protester says. This government is no use to us. It doesnt serve the people and its political project is to kill us. The demonstrations against the president in cities like Rio De Janeiro are some of the largest since the beginning of the pandemic. Demonstrators had two main demands, calling for the president s impeachment and getting better access to covid19 vaccines. Impeachment now. He must go, this protester said, adding more people will die if he stays in power. Early in the pandemic, the controversial right wing former Military Officer downplayed covid19 as a little flu. The president also questioned the effectiveness of vaccines and was often seen Greeting Crowds of supporters without a mask before contracting the virus himself. Brazil has been one of the hardest Hit Countries in the world and is now facing a possible Third Wave of covid19. Vaccination has been slow, less than 10 of the population of 210 Million is fully inoculated, and the country has the third highest amount of infections following United States and india. Some protesters say his lack of action amounts to genocide. The brazilian senate has opened an investigation into the president s handling of the pandemic. The protests happen only a week after a maskless president led a Motorcycle Rally where he questioned the usefulness of measures to prevent the spread of covid19. Still to come, canada in mourning. Details on the devastating discovery on the grounds of a former school for indigenous children. In South Florida police are hunting for suspects after this weekends deadly Banquet Hall shooting. A crowd was gathered for a concert, and two people were killed and at least 20 others injured. 125,000 is now being offered for information leading to an arrest. Natasha chen has more from miamidade county. Reporter miamidade police say three people got out of a white Nissan Path finder Sunday Morning and started shooting at the crowd. These people used Assault Rifles and handguns and got back in the car and fled the scene. Police say a number of people standing outside at the time included patrons of a lounge where a private concert was being held, and that establishment is a hookah Lounge And Banquet hall. Police have used dozens of markings on the ground for Shell Caseings and brought in k9s to assist, and one woman said her Son And Nephew were among the 20 people injured. That is my son, my only son, my only child. Hes a graduate from college last year, so hes educated, and he was going out with his educated cousin to celebrate the weekend and they had not made it into the club as of yet. They said some guys came three guys they noticed just started shooting for whatever reason. We dont know. We are expecting a Press Conference Monday Morning with county officials to give an update on the investigation. Texas Law Enforcement officials say they were able to stop a planned Mass Casualty Event from taking place. Police arrested blevins on friday, and he was networking with extremists and planning a Mass Shooting possibly at a walmart. They worked with other agencies to discover the alleged plan, and they found firearms and ammunition inside his home. They say they also uncovered books, flags and documents that reflected radical ideology. He may face federal charges. Flags in canada are flying at halfstaff who Honor Hundreds Of Children that wehere remains were found. The discovery is astounding, and so too the anguish, leaving Community Members in much of canada reeling, and some buried for decades on the ground of the indian residential school, their deaths believe to be undocumented, and graves unmarked. The indigenous community calls it an unthinkable discovery, and some prior students of the school said they thought of nothing else for decades. What i realized yesterday, it was a little boy. A lot of people didnt come home. It was one of the largest residential schools of its kind in canada but there were well over 100 across the country, many were run by the Catholic Church and later by the federal government. According to Canadas Truth and reconciliation commission, indigenous kids were forced to attend the schools, and many disappeared. Their families never knowing what became of them. What they were told is that when children were missing, that they were told they ran away. Yet the community here knew that couldnt be true. Survivors of the families of the missing children were sure a Mass Grave would be found but they were unprepared for the loss of 215 souls. It was devastating. It was actually quite mindboggling. The canadian Prime Minister, justin trudeau, says its a painful reminder of the history, and thousands of children died of abuse or negligent in the schools, and the legacy is now one of enter generational trauma. While the archbishop of vancouver has acknowledged the abuse, the Catholic Church never formerly apologized. Trudeau agreed decades of abuse amounted to cultural genocide. Now native leaders say its time the government steps up. 215 pair of shoes are laid on these vancouver steps, finally their souls symbolically are at rest. Needles.
