Ignorance, or as democrats say, proof of republicans, quote, fear to Donald Trump. A short time ago Gop Senators blocked the bill to create that independent bipartisan commission that would have tried to find the truth behind the January 6th attack on the u. S. Capitol. The final Senate Vote was 5435. With these republican senators voting in favor of that bipartisan commission. These are the same senators, except for rob portman, who voted to convict Donald Trump in his second impeachment for inciting the insurrection. Ten republican votes were needed to create the bipartisan commission. They didnt get it. Cnns Jessica Dean is on Capitol Hill, has been following all of this. So, we showed the republicans who voted for it, but there were 11 senators, mostly republicans, who did not cast a vote at all. Are they explaining why . Reporter well, the explanations are kind of trickling in this afternoon, victor and alisyn. We have heard from a number of people who said they had Family Members they committed to. They wouldnt be able to be here. They were traveling, doing work on behalf of their senate committees. It really varies. Senator toomey said he would have supported the commission had he been here, but he was attending to a personal Family Matter. So, we are getting various explanations. Again, 11 senators not voting on this. Two of those being democrats. Senator murray and also senator cinema. Senator murray saying she had a private Family Matter to attend to as well. The broader picture at this point this bipartisan commission is dead. It will not be moving forward as in the senate. Right now the question becomes, what happens next . Here is Senate Majority Leader chuck schumer. Take a listen. And im just terribly disappointed that so many republicans refuse to even look at a bipartisan, down the middle look at it because theyre afraid of Donald Trump. Donald trump is a bane to our democracy. And unless people in his own party stand up to him, its bad for the party, its bad for those individuals, but most of all its bad for the country. And i spoke with Senator Joe Manchin right after he came off the floor there. Of course, hes a notable moderate democrat that really wants to build consensus on this and he said theyre not done. He says they are not done with this. And i tried to press him on what that means. If they cant get the votes now, what makes him think theyll get the votes later on . He said its going to be public outrage that a bipartisan Commission Cant be formed to look into the deadly insurrection that happened here on January 6th. Well see if the public outrage comes and if that, in fact, can put any pressure on any additional republicans. Right now, alisyn and victor, that doesnt look likely that would happen. Instead, its more likely that this becomes a select committee put together by House Speaker Nancy pelosi. I asked her about that last week and she said she really had hoped this bipartisan commission was going to work out. Now we will see what House Speaker Pelosi does, what democrats do to move forward. Only six republican senators want to get to the bottom of what happened on January 6th. The rest, i guess, want to preserve ignorance or, i guess, protect Donald Trump. They dont want to offend Donald Trump. They want to protect him at all costs. This is our democracy were talking about and not being willing to get to the bottom of it is just horrifying to me. Now, its not just that. Its that they were able to ignore the pleas of the family of the fallen officer like brian Sicknick And Howie liebengood who fought so bravely on those days to protect us and they ignore the families that they dont want to get to the bottom of it. I can only imagine how the families are feeling, the message sent to them. Have you spoken to the families this afternoon since this vote . I havent spoken to them since the vote, but i think it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that it wasnt going to pass. They were very, very disappointed. I mean, this would be an ideal vehicle to get to the bottom of what happened, to do it in a bipartisan way with an Expert Commission who dont have any kind of other agenda to push, you know, it would have been fantastic to be able to do it, but, sadly, the republicans dont have the courage or the backbone to let it happen. I mean, he lost his Life. 160 other Capitol Police Officers were injured, some of them grievously. How can the people who voted against this, the lawmakers who voted against this, say that they support police . Thats the thing thats most disgusting about this, that they talk they talk a good game about backing the blue but when they have an opportunity to do it, they run away scared and go back to protect Donald Trump rather than protecting our Police Officers who fought so bravely for us. You know, there are still 70 officers who are out on Disability Leave because of the injuries they sustained on January 6th. And there are another 70 who have retired and things like this this Vote Today doesnt make them want to stay on. You know, its very frightening what theyre doing with our democracy and with our police. What do democrats do now . Have you heard the next move by Speaker Pelosi is a select committee . I dont know that shes going to have a choice. She gave the republicans everything they wanted in the bipartisan commission and that still wasnt enough. They keep moving the goalpost but we need to get to the bottom of what happened. If a select committee is the only way to do that, we will get to the truth of what happened and we will act on it. I also want to ask you about this republican congresswoman, this freshman from georgia, who repeatedly compares Anyone Or Anything she doesnt like, particularly democrats, to nazis. Can democrats do anything about her . Its absolutely reprehensible. Shes already been removed from her committees. What needs to happen is for republicans to remove her from their caucus or committee, but i dont know if thats going to happen because, again, none of them have the courage and she seems to tb popular with Donald Trump. Its horrifying what she says. I try to ignore it but it gets a lot of oxygen and a lot of play, but the kind of rhetoric that she has is so hateful and so hurtful, its no way to govern. And, you know, its really hard to ignore it because she is a believer in qanon and new polling out that 14 of all americans now believe in some of the Qanon Conspiracy theories. 23 , in other words, a quarter of republicans believe in these Qanon Conspiracy theories, so shes not alone. This is not going away. No. And its not surprising when the republicans have been pushing the Big Lie for so long that it would turn out of control and we would have these crazy Conspiracy Theories like qanon. But, you know, whats stopping that disinformation is so important and sadly were not able to do much when half of congress is unwilling to do so and feels they benefit from it politically. Theyre not willing to look at that for the future of our democracy and what it does for our institutions. Its let scary but we need good people to speak up and to make it clear that this sort of thing is not acceptable and this is not what we believe and this is not what america is about. This time 150 government agencies, think tanks, nonprofits were hit, according to microsoft, which flagged that attack. Now, heres the context. Microsoft determined this latest hack started with the u. S. Agency for international development by gaining access to the usaid website, the hackers were able to send out convincing looking Phishing Emails like this one on your screen. When you click on it, users unleash this malware into the system that opens Back Door for Cyber Attacks. Doctor, this is exciting for campers and parents alike, but, to be honest, its still a little confusing. Kids under 12 will not be vaccinated, so theyll have to wear masks at summer camp. What are they saying about when kids are sleeping at night . So, here are the big takeaway from these new guidelines, which i like everybody else across the country is just were just starting to digest them. Big Takeaway Number one. If you are fully vaccinated, you dont need to wear a mask. This is consistent with Cdcs Guidance that was released a couple of weeks ago about vaccinated adults. The second big thing is that if youre outdoors, even if you are unvaccinated, you dont need to wear a mask. The cdc is now encouraging folks to wear masks for kids who are unvaccinated to wear masks outdoors if theyre in crowded settings but says its okay for them to take it off. Thats so correct. If you have a bnch of kids outdoors, you have the breeze blowing, chance of one of them giving covid to one another, especially with our low covid rates right now is really low. So we can let our kids play outdoors without masks on. The third thing is no masks if youre sleeping overnight. Thank goodness. Can you imagine having overnight with a mask on . Pretty difficult. They do still recommend vaccinations for age 12 and up. Its the best way to protect our kids. This is great news for so many parents who were concerned and kids headed off to summer camp. Now they have this new guidance. Lets move on to adults who are headed somewhere this weekend. We heard from the mayor of miami beach, dan gelber, he says there are too many people likely coming to his city. Hes concerned about the spread there. I wonder if youre as concerned because we heard the same thing from Mayor Gelber ahead of Spring Break and we didnt see any huge spikes, same thing with texas. Are you concerned headed into this weekend . I have a much lower level of concern than i did a month ago or two months ago. The reason why, because more of us are vaccinated. You look at the vaccination Numbers Day after day. Every person vaccinated protects not just themselves but all the people around them and many of the most crowded sites like nightclubs are asking for proof of vaccination before they let you in. Those are the places where covid will spread. Where youre crowded, breathing heavily, youre dancing, theres not a lot of ventilation. Its where i would recommend wearing a mask if you dont know that everybody is vaccinated. But my overall level of worry right now is lower thanks to our successes with vaccines. Weve seen a dramatic increase in the number of shootings over the last year. But there is so much that we can do to stop this. We have one in my hometown of providence, Nonviolence Institute that im on the board of that does great work of taking street workers, people that used to be in gangs and using them to break up community disputes, to stop the cycle of violence and heal that ripple effect. While we work for more sensible policies needed to help us take a real public Health Approach to this situation. Theyre currently trying to get contact with trevor, either by phone or in person or have him contact his family. Theyre not getting through through the russian system. Theyre trying all day, every day for the last three days. I cannot imagine the not knowing now that you know he has tested positive. How did you find out about the positive test . We found out through his legal team. And when is the last time they met with Him On Monday for a meeting at the courthouse and the jail sent him, the day after he was tested but they didnt have results yet. And on tuesday the lawyers were notified that he was positive, so he could have exposed the entire legal team and the judges in the courtroom. When is the last time you were able to speak with your son . The thursday before that. We get a Phone Call thursdays. Sometimes. Sometimes. Okay. Let me move on here. We talked about this summit thats Coming Up in about three weeks between President Biden and vladimir putin. Starting just broadly, should President Biden meet with President Putin if your son is still detained . To say, should his release be a condition of that summit . I dont think we want to commit to national security situations and things that the administration is having to deal with because they obviously have more to deal with than our son, but our son is obviously the priority for us. We do believe it should be a major part of their discussions and any discussions and we would hope that both President Putin and President Biden can come to some sort of an agreement to release our Son And Paul whelan, who we believe are both imprisoned illegally and innocent. And, victor, i want to say that when trevor was serving in the marine corps, he had to serve extra time on his term to do president ial guard. He served during the obama administration, when President Obama and vice President Biden were at camp david. We are begging, hoping and praying that President Biden will do his best to bring our Son Home because he protected him at camp david. That is a current assessment of the situation. My only fear is that 180 days is really not a sufficient enough time to provide a comprehensive report. When i was when i was working in the pentagon, we did this for nearly a decade. And theres a lot of information to comb through. Again, my fear is that 180 days is simply not going to be long enough to provide that sp comprehensive report to congress that it asks for. Your anticipation is that this wont be comprehensive, then . Well, i think its going to be a start. My hope is this is going to serve as an interim report. Frankly, i hope theres a more longterm enduring capability established within the government. Perhaps a whole of government approach, to look at this issue. This issue is not a recent issue. Its been going on for many, many years if not decades and its finally coming to the point where the u. S. Government really, its reached this Critical Mass where we cant simply deny it anymore. So, when you were the director of this special program at the pentagon, what information did you see that the rest of us dont know about . Sure. Well, i think whats important is were talking about Eyewitness Testimony from trained observers. These are individuals we have spent millions of dollars training for them to recognize the silhouette of an f16 versus an s22 versus a mig 25. What theyre reporting are really extraordinary vehicles doing extraordinarile things. Furthermore, its backed up by electrooptical data and further backed up by radar. You have three distinct pieces, or if you will, Collection Sources that are all providing the same information at the same time, at the same place, under the same circumstances and all validating what the pilots are seeing. So its very compelling and at this point we know its real. You make an interesting point. At this point you know its real. Not too long ago, as i mentioned, this would have been a joke but now you have a president , former president acknowledging this. What changed that now we have former President Obama saying, serious now, there are things we cannot explain . Yeah, well, its not just former President Obama. Reporter at this point we dont believe that there are. Thats according to the department of Homeland Security. But Dhs Officials do say they have alerted local authorities in Tulsa And Oklahoma that an event like this could be an attractive target to white supremacist groups in the united states. This comes as Dhs Officials have been warning for some time that the most urgent Terrorist Threat in the united states right now is from domestic terrorism. And so that is one of the reasons behind all of this. But at this point, no credible or specific threats to this festival. This is key because President Biden is also expected to visit tulsa next tuesday at the heart of this festival. So ed, there was an event planned for monday.
