Andrew yang will respond right here live. And well talk to the former republican congressman who said his antitrump views literally got him canceled from his new j job. A good morning to viewers here in the united states and around The World. It is thursday, may 27th. And it is a tough morning. Americans who are surviving the pandemic are dying from americas other epidemic. Another day, another hour, another Mass Shooting. This morning, the friends and Loved Ones of nine more americans are shott shattered b unimaginable grief. The latest carnage in san jose, california, where a shooter went on a rampage at a Light Rail Yard in a case of workplace violence. This is the 232nd Mass Shooting of 2021. It is the 17th just in the past week from an analysis from the gun archive. 17 shootings in america this past week. 17. Since last wednesday, at least two dozen people have been shot to death with many more injured. Its a list that is expanding. Mass shootings occurring in san jose, michigan, west jefferson, ohio, chicago, two of them, park forest, illinois, youngstown, ohio, ft. Wayne, indiana, norfolk, virginia, paterson, new jersey, klum, but ohio, minneapolis, Jersey City and bay shore, New York. So finding a safe place in america is impossible. In recent years shootings have taken place everywhere. In a church, in an elementary school, high school, a restaurant, a military base, a navy yard, at the post office, in a movie theater, at a grocery store, at a concert, at a college, at a nightclub or bar, at walmart, a fedex facility, a mcdonalds, in a hospital. A community center, a city center, a municipal center, a newsroom. In your homes in your workplaces. And massage parlors. A gas station. In The Street at a festival, in a hotel, at the airport, at a party venue, a sports complex, a park, and most recently in a public transportation Rail Yard in san jose, california. Joining me is State Assembly Member for san jose, ash caller. The attack took place at the vta Rail Yard. Assemblyman, tell me how your community is doing this morning. Yeah, its shattering. Its heartbreaking. You can see the pain in the community. The outpouring of concern. But its something as we hear the rattling off of all the places this occurs that happens in so many places. Its unacceptable. Now it happened to you and to yours. And i know that thats hard. Yeah, its a nightmare because you see this happen in other places. When it happens in your hometown, a place you represent, a place that ive called home for over four decades, and especially a place like vta. These are bus operators, maintenance workers, individuals that have had a really, really hard year. We all have. But theyve been running the buses, the light rails. Theyve been working through this year. And suffering through the public Health Pandemic Weve all been going through. We see a light at the end of the tunnel and then this tragedy strikes. Do you know any of the victims or have any connection to the community at large that was directly attacked . Well, i used to be a Board Member for the vta, as well as a board chair, so i do know the Union Leadership of atu. I spoke with the President Yesterday who was, obviously, completely shattered. He was in the room when the gun was first revealed. I cant imagine what he and others that have survived are feeling. Survivors guilt, seeing their coworkers, people they see every day gunned down and massacred. So absolutely, im very much connected to vta and to these workers. And to this community. And youre feeling that pain because its so visceral. Everyone sees the buses driving around. They know their local bus driver. They know what vta is all about. Its very connected to all of us that have grown up here. Now youre an elected official. So what are you going to do about this . Here in california, we have continued to have some of the strongest Gun Violence Prevention Legislation And Background checks. We have Red Flag laws that are stronger than ever before. But at the end of the day, this runs a lot deeper than that. This is a cultural phenomenon that doesnt happen anywhere else and complete lack from the federal government because we have a gop that refuses to act on any type of restrictions on gun use, including battleground checks which are so wildly popular amongst all americans in a bipartisan manner. Listen, assemblyman, ash kalra, were so sorry for your loss and appreciate you being with us this morning. Thank you so much. And i just want this to end. We all do. Thank you. I mean, how . How, though. Its not going to end by nothing happening, but youre asking the right questions there. Thanks so much. It has to end because this Gun Violence is devastating. Its tearing apart american families. You hear that from san jose. Its also robbing families of their most precious members, children, and small children. In minneapolis, 6yearold Anaya Allen was shot in the head while just riding in her moms car. They were on their way home from a day at the lake when they were caught in an exchange of gunfire. And she later died at the hospital. At this point, no arrests have been made, no suspects identified. Were still waiting for more details on the investigation here. Joining me now is anayas Grandfather K. G. Wilson. Thank you for joining us this morning as your family is grieving. I think its so important for people to hear from you because it feels like anyone can be in your position, you know . As you were going through what has got to be the most horrible thing youve ever dealt with in your life. Can you tell us, what is on your Mind Today . What do you want people to know . Well, first of all, the pain and the hurt from the beginning was just devastating. It continues to be devastating. As the days go by and there has not been an arrest, waking up is torturous. Waking up this morning and looking at my phone and not only that waking up this morning, just all day long, throughout the day just looking at my phone, checking my phone to see if i maybe have missed a call from local detectives who are on the Case Or Somebody in the community that may have some information on who killed shot and killed my granddaughter. Its just like a constant thing that goes on that is just haunting to my spirit and my mind, and its just aggravating. And to know that these people are still out here or this person is still out here who did this to my granddaughter as well as even the two other children that were shot also. What do you want them to know, the person who is still out there . I want them to know that enough. Its time enough running. Youve got to be miserable. If you have any conscience or any feelings inside of you, its time to stop running. Its time to turn yourself in and get this done with and bring some closure to my family and The Other Two families and to the city of minneapolis. And now to all the viewers who have seen this and know that this is happening and going on In Minneapolis right now. I definitely dont want this person who is running and scared, hiding like i probably think they are. I believe they are. To end up shooting Someone Elses child. Trying to run and hide in fear. Turn yourself in now. I said before, those who may know who did this to turn this person or these people in as soon as possible. There is a 35,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Hopefully it doesnt take that. Hopefully you find it in your heart to just say i cannot allow this family to go through this type of pain, and i know who did this. K. G. , you are a prominent Peace Activist in your community. Our viewers may not know that. And two of your sons were shot years ago, and they survived. Yeah. And now you have lost anaya. You have said that your sadness has turned to anger. You have been dealing with this issue for so long. I wonder what why isnt anything changing, and i wonder what you think about as someone who has been touched by this kind of violence and devastated by it repeatedly. Well, until i believe we, in our communities, stand up to those who are doing these shootings, these acts of violence, until we stand up to them and get these people put where they need to be put, away from the other people who want peace, until we separate them so that we can have peaceful communities, were going to continue to see the same thing over and over again. One of the most terrifying things i think that i will always feel now after this is that, to hear that this happens to Someone Else. Especially if these individuals do this to Someone Else. Thats why it is a must that im pleading. Thats why im here today pleading out to the community, not just for the justice again for my children, my granddaughter and The Other Two, but the safety of the other children in our community. Because if these people have not turned themselves in thus far, that means that they are in a place of being heartless. And those are dangerous individuals that need to be taken out of our community. Its sad to say that there may be others like them. And not just In Minneapolis. In different cities where you hear these type of shootings, and there has not been no justice. And no closure to these families. Meaning that the people in the community have not turned these people in. Sometimes Family Members know about it and refuse to turn these people in, and children after children after children are continuously being hurt or maybe even killed from community, from City To city, and state to state. And so until we in our community will stand up and say, hey, enough is enough, our children are our future, we cannot allow these people to continue to hurt and kill them. And so with that being said, thats the only thing that i can see bringing some change. We have to be the change. We cant wait for the police to come in and finding people. They cant do it without our help. We have to let them know who is doing what and what they are doing. And we we need to get rid of them and get them out of our community so that the people who go to work and the children who want to go to school and just be children can live peaceful lives. Other than that, were going to live in fear in our community until that happens. These children, they are the hope for the future. That is what happens when someone like anaya is taken. Were here in washington. Theres so many families who have been through what you have gone through. And it feels like nothing is being done on a sort of broad scale to deal with this terrible issue. And, you know, i want people to know what is lost. Even just in this one case. Can you tell us about anaya, what she was like, what was her favorite thing to do . What are you going to miss . Well, anaya was a baby who, she wanted to be a big girl. She thought that she was a big girl. She was Papas Baby. I would always tease her. I knew that she was starting to grow up, and i wanted her to stay my little baby anaya. And so what i would say to her is i would say to her, are you Papas Baby . And i would call her, i would tease her and say, naya, naya pacifier. She would say, papa, i dont have pacifiers no more. Im a big girl. And i would say, no, youre Papas Baby. She says, no, im a big girl. And so i would tease her and say, well, i think i may have to i need my baby anaya. I have to have my baby ayana. And she would say im a big girl. I would say, i guess i have to go to walmart and find me another baby anaya. And she would go, no. And so just the most beautiful smile that i dont care what you are going through, she would smile at you and just she was an angel. And i have to repeat this. One of my sons, christopher, said in this quote, he said that anaya was an angel, and she was too good for this evil world. And i think that was one of the most best things that i have been holding onto that keeps me. You know, i go from emotion of tears to anger because theres no justice, and i think about what they did to, i believe, would have been one of our future leaders. I cant see her not accomplishing anything great and positive if she would have still been here. She was an inspiration for me. You know, i wanted to make sure that she had somebody positive in her life that she could look to. Theres so much negativity in our community, and our young people see. They have the two choices to either be something negative that they see every Day Or Something positive that they see. And so i wanted to make sure that she had somebody positive in her life and so she was an inspiration to me. And i was doing everything i could to show her the way. And so that she can be a positive, productive member in her community. But if you met her, she was the type of Little Girl that you would have wanted to make your Goddaughter Or Godchild or want her to take her with you or buy her something. She just was precious. She would just move you as soon as youve seen her. So these mean people is what im calling them took away a precious angel that our family needed. Our family needed. And so, yes, like i said, its hard to fight back my tears because they are connected to anger right now because i keep having to deal with daily, no justice yet. And so what happened yesterday is it took me back to The Streets that i hadnt been on in months. And now im back on The Streets, and i just Cant Sit and wait for somebody to call me now, bring me justice. So im back on The Streets now and im passing out flyers. Ill be all over the city because i promised anaya. I said papas going to get justice, even if it costs me my life, papa is going to be out trying to get justice for you. And so thats thats where i am now, and i wish you guys could have met her. I wish if this would have been somebody elses family, thank god it isnt, and i was doing the story, anaya would be somebody who would be with me. She would be with me because she loved to be with me. She wanted to do help people. She loved people, as a child. So thats pretty much she loved purple no, she loved blue and pink and she loved watching like tv and wed sit there. Id give her all the snacks. Probably even snacks i wasnt supposed to give her. Of course. When she smiled, she could have all the snacks. Just eat them all. If shes here now, id give her all of them. K. G. , i wish i could have met her. But i feel like i get at least a glimpse into her from you, and i really appreciate that. I think, you know, we all can be in your position. Thats the randomness of this. And its so important that we understand what is lost. K. G. Wilson, thank you so much for being with us. Youre welcome. Thanks for having me. Were back in a moment. The New York Daily News defending this Cartoon It published of new York City mayoral candidate andrew yang, Which Yang calls a Racialized Ka r rickature. His opponents in the News Editorial Board pointed out hes recently revealed there are major gaps in his knowledge of new York City politics and policy. Nor has he ever voted in a mayoral election. The cartoon is a comment on that, period, end of story. Joining me now is mayoral candidate andrew yang. Nice to see you. What do you say to the daily news. I think anyone objective looking at that cartoon knows that its playing on an idea of asianamericans as permanent tourists and outsiders. And were at a point in our history unfortunately when asianamericans are getting beaten on The Streets of New York and told to go back where we came from, or that we dont belong. So the daily news characterizing it as a political commentary that does not include race, just rings false. It followed you responding to a question about what your favorite Subway Station was. You said the Times Square Station so it shows you coming out of the Times Square Station. You dont think theres any legitimate way to depict that . Again, the cartoon does not work if its a person of a different race. And i said times square is my favorite Subway Stop because i live blocks away in Hells Kitchen and use that stop to get around the city. It goes just about anywhere In The City because theres so many lines that converge there. It is very convenient. You talked about antiasian hate crime. The president did Sign A Bill On that recently. Have you seen any change in the last week or so . I am thrilled that joe signed that bill. It was championed by New Yorks own Grace Mang who is cochair of my campaign. And the fact that were taking this seriously as a country gives me a lot of pride and hope. But when you talk to asianamericans here in new York City and around the country, theres still a sense of anxiety and concern. And its based upon the ir interactions people are having when folks shrink away or in some cases do even worse. Whats going to change it . Well, the hope is that we can start bringing people together and send a clear message that everyone belongs. Everyone is american, that the coronavirus is certainly not associated with any one of a particular ethnic group. And the country is still recovering from the pandemic, in my mind, psychologically and emotionally. Theres a lot of pain. A lot of struggle. A lot of suffering and thats manifesting in violence against particular groups. Its also just manifesting itself in violence. Were seeing we see the Mass Shooting in san jose. We know that violence in new York City, crime in new York City is up as well. So as mayor, what are you going to do about that . Well, there are a number of things we have to do as quickly as possible. So you have to track down the folks perpetrating these things and get the Clearance Rate up. The Clearance Rate or rate as which were solving some of these shootings is way too low. Its 20 , 25 in some parts of new York City. Which means if you shoot someone, theres a good Chance Youll be on the loose and shoot another person. Thats job one. We have to provide more resources to people coming out of prison because sometimes they will give tries some kind of payback or another violent act. So there are things we can do immediately to get crime going down in New York, but youre right this is a national phenomenon. Theres a lot of pain and pentup energy and its expressing itself in violence in so many places. What about funding for the Police Force in general . I think defunding the police is the wrong approach here in new York City. We have to take the resources we have and make sure that were actually utilizing them and deploying them effectively. Back to this issue on shootings. Often there will only be one detective assigned to that case. So while they are investigating, another shooting will occur and then theyll be assigned to that case and the first shooting will fall by the wayside. We need multiple detectives assigned and have the Gun Suppression Unit have the resource to support the precincts. Right now some of the more violent precincts are left on their own. In new York City, in the democratic primary, theres a ranked Choice Voting for the first time. People rank their candidates in order of preference and then the person on the bottom keeps getting taken away until one person gets over 50 . This has got to change the way that you campaign as a politician because you are saying to voters, dont just vote for me as your top choice but i also want to be your second or third choice if im not your top choice just as well. How does it affect your approach to people . First, let me say, i love rank Choice Voting and i hope its the future not just in new York City but around the country. It can free us from this polarization. To your point it should make it so that Candidates Campaign more positively, try and bring people together because if you just snipe at each other, then Someone Else who is positive will rise and do better. It is one reason ive tried to campaign optimistically. Ranked Choice Voting should be our future around the country because it can free us up from this one side against the other dynamic. How do you make the case that you know as much about new York City politics and government and the way the city works having never voted in a mayoral race, if im correct, as the other people who are running against you . I am a public school parent. I know what families are going through here In The City. But also, New Yorkers know that our government has not been working for us for years. Weve had systems failing right and left, trash is piling up. The municipal budget has gone from 60 Billion to 90 Billion over the last ten years and i cannot find a single New Yorker who thinks the city or its services have gotten 50 better during that time. We need new leadership. New yorkers know it. Thats why were going to win this race on june 22nd. Andrew yang, thanks for coming in. Capitol Police Officers say they are political pawns to the lawmakers they protect. New cnn reporting, next. And the longtime republican who says he was just fired from conservative radio for being antitrump. [lazer beam and sizzling sounds] with Voltaren Arthritis Pain gel, [lazer beam and my husbands got his moves back. An alternative to pills, voltaren is the first full prescription strength gel, for powerful arthritis pain relief. Voltaren. The joy of movement. Wanna help kids get their homework done . Well, an internet connections a good start. But kids also need computers. And sometimes the hardest thing about homework is finding a place to do it. So why not hook Community Centers up with wifi . For kids like us, and all the amazing things were gonna learn. Over the next 10 years, comcast is committing 1 Billion to reach 50 Million lowincome americans with the tools and resources they need to be ready for anything. I hope youre ready. cause we are. Capitol police are demoralized by republicans efforts to minimize and move on from January 6th. More than a dozen officers spoke to cnn and they described being treated like political pawns, like servants, like Paul Blart Mall cop once said. Joining us, cnn political commentators, ashley allison, former national Coalitions Director for the Biden Harris 2020 Campaign And Mary catherine hamm, a conservative blogger. One of the officers who spoke to cnn said, for all the talk of supporting the police, when they as a force were battered and bruised, lawmakers arent really doing anything to investigate this as they see appropriate. Do you think that lawmakers owe it to them to investigate this with the commission . Yeah, i support a commission. The idea this is something you can just move past without looking into it is crazy to me. You cant have actual people attacking cops on the steps of the capitol with an american flag and tell me its nbd. The arguments are weak, even though im not confident that congress does a super job with it. That being said, part of the Commissions Job should be to investigate Capitol Police leadership. I know we have to walk a Fine Line where we say thank you to everybody for their service, which is heroic and kept anyones hands off of any congresspeople or any elected leaders, which is clearly something they wanted to do. Everybody was kept safe bodily. But there was a Posture Issue here. The force has 2300 officers protecting a very small area, and i respect the idea they want a commission. They also just got 1. 9 billion in more funding from congress so they are not exactly being left in the dark here. And another thing about congress is, it is telling to me and to many people that the first thing they did when they were under attack is fund the police. They didnt defund the police. They gave them 1. 9 billion. The force that protects them. Ashley, what do you think . Well, i think its important to know that, you know, we all saw what happened on January 6th. The commission is important because we need to know what happened before, what happened during and what happened after. We need to know what those conversations were between Mccarthy And Thenpresident trump. And so i do think its a betrayal of the officers who every day go to that capitol and protect those elected officials, protect our democracy and did it during the insurrection and continue to do it after. Lost lives, were injured. To turn your back on them and dismiss and say im not going to do a commission because of politics is really disrespectful. Particularly since this is the party that they want to pretend like theyre so supportive of law enforcement. This is the time to show it is to actually do a Commission And Figure out what happened on January 6th. I think thats the thing about the commission. Its supposed to look more globally at this and look at what the Capitol Police leadership missed. Look at what lawmakers were doing at the time. Look at the involvement in the factors that pressured all of this into being. I do want to ask you guys about something that James Carville said. Ashley, he wrote that democrats should be blaming trump and should be blaming republicans for a spike in crime nationwide. He says this started last year when President Trump was in the white house. He cites trumps actions. What do you think . Well, there is definitely a correlation between particularly around the attacks on asianamericans and the way he would use disrespectful, racist language to talk about covid19. We saw a spike and we continue to see a spike around violence towards asianamericans. We saw what he said on January 6th and the people that he surrounded himself on January 6th and really empowered. And we hear the people who took to the capitol that day in saying they were listening to President Trump, and they went to, quote unquote, defend their democracy and stop the election from being stolen, which we know is a complete sham. So i definitely think trump has something to do with the increase in violence. But i also think its those legislators that continue to you just did a segment about Gun Violence. In my own hometown of youngstown, ohio, this past weekend, while i was there, there was a Mass Shooting. We are suffering from an epidemic in this country of violence. And we know the solution. And we know that overwhelmingly, americans support comprehensive and reasonable gun reform. And yet, year after year, congressional cycle after congressional cycle, it is republican leaders or pretend to be leaders, who continue to stop the legislation to be passed to try and bring an end to this violence. Trump and republicans definitely have some responsibility in the violence and the increase in violence that were seeing. M. K. . This is carville sounding an alarm as a democratic strategist to democrats saying, the crime spikes really, really matter to people. They matter to people in their personal lives. This is a kitchen table issue, and heres how you can come at it in a way that youll really enjoy, which is going after trump because its hard for democrats to talk about crime except under the rubric of Gun Control. Its the only way they know how to do it and, frankly, when you look at polls, defund the place aint it, right . Im somebody who is very open to police reforms, and i think they should happen within Capitol Police and with other police. But as i said, its very telling that the first Thing Congress does is arm up their Police Force while many of them in congress, and i will say with the exception of several democrats who stayed true to their defund the police message, its not a popular message but they stuck to it even in the funding of the Capitol Police bill. There are ways to reform without cutting Police Forces down and without sending the message that youre not going to back them up. In many urban areas in the last year, the message was, we will not back you up as leadership if something goes wrong. And Police Officers heard that. Many of the forces are being decreased. They are losing funding. And a lot of regular folks are not buying the idea that the way to fix that is to take more from them. So i think there needs to be a more compelling message for democrats. They cant ignore it. In d. C. , 143 increase in carjackings, In Minneapolis, 300 increase in carjackings. This is a real personal Safety Issue that both parties have to address in a real way. And i would add that in the most recent Mass Shootings weve seen, theyve taken place in states that have all of the Gun Control measures that democrats continue to push. Its unclear to me that that is the solution. I feel like we could talk about this for many more minutes. Well have to leave it there. I will put a button on it and say this. Police reform, it appears, may actually get out of this congress, which is amazing when you consider how divided it is. Were going to see senator Tim Scott said, you know, june is the deadline. So well see what goes in, what happens here in the next few weeks. Both of you ashley, Mary Katherine it will be nice to see it not filibustered this time. Well see. Well get one today, though, on something else. Definitely. All right you guys. Thanks for being with us. Up next, the longtime republican, a former congressman who claims his antitrump talk just got him booted from conservative radio. Governments in record debt; inflation rising, currencies falling. But ive seen centuries of this. With one companion that hedges the risks you choose and those that choose you. The physical seam of a digital world, traded with a touch. My strongest and closest asset. The gold standard, so to speak ; people call my future uncertain. But theres one thing i am sure of. Former republican congressman Joe Walsh just lost his national Talk Radio Show again, saying that the Gab Radio Network wanted to oust him for some time because of his antitrump views. Some bad news. Looks like ive lost my radio show. The network is run by a Big Trumper and hes wanted to boot me for a while. Looks like it finally happened. Not surprised but i am bummed. I thought it was important to have one Antitrump Conservative on the radio. Joining us now is former Radio Host of the Joe Walsh show on gab radio, Joe Walsh. We did reach out to the network but have not heard back. So joe, walk us through what happened. How you found out. Whats going on here . John, good to be with you. I went into this studio about a week, week and a half ago and the show had been pulled from the air. So i found out without any warning, but again, i dont want to sound like a cry baby. You and i have talked about this before. This isnt the first time this has happened to me. Im a conservative. I am a loud outspoken Antitrump Conservative, and thats just not a fit on conservative Talk Radio. The group i was with before i primaried Donald Trump, i mean, when i came out against Donald Trump three to three and a half years ago, i began to lose my radio show. The lesson here is, if you want to be viable in conservative media, you cant be antitrump. Yeah, that is loud and clear because they hired you to be honest and unafraid. That was the point of why they hired you, right . Yeah, it sure was. Look, this is so analogous to the republican party. Im a longtime republican. I left the party a year ago. Why did i leave . Because if you want to get elected as a republican, you have to make love to Donald Trump every day. If you want to succeed in conservative media, they dont want you to be honest. Again, you have to get down and bow down and Praise Donald Trump every day. Look, you can be like sean Hannity And Kiss trumps feet every day and make a lot of money. Most republicans, though, and most people in conservative media, they do their best not to have to talk about trump because they dont like him, and they know hes bad for the party and the country so they do what people like Tucker Carlson do. And just generally try to ignore trump. I couldnt do that. So if youre outspoken like me against trump, you have no place. Bigger picture, and you talk about this a lot because there are people, and we cover it all the time, people who want to reform the republican party or pull the republican party back to its socalled roots. Look at what happened to you. This is the market responding to that idea. What does that tell you about the possibility . John, youre right. It is the market. Theyve got a try to pull a voice like me off the radio, again, but this is what makes me so profoundly sad. Weve got 40 to 50, 60 Million americans living in an alternate sea of reality. They are living in a sea of conspiracies and lies. John, these are folks who dont watch cnn. Trump supporters. They watch Fox News or they listen to Talk Radio. It makes me so sad because i was trying to reach these people with simple facts and truths every day because they are bombarded with lies and manipulated. But theres no place for that. Thats what makes me so sad. I was the only conservative on conservative Talk Radio trying to put truth in front of republican voters every day. Well, i think it is a shame that they arent going to have your alternate point of view. What are you going to do next, joe . Brianna, i dont know. I may tend bar somewhere. I may be a barista somewhere. I laugh about it but when you step back, in this age of trump, if you are a conservative, the worst possible thing you can do as a Career Move is publicly speak out against trump. The Tokyo Olympics are eight weeks away, and organizers are insisting the games are still happening. But calls for the Tokyo Olympics to be canceled over covid are growing louder. And the latest is coming from a major newspaper in japan. So what do the weeks of Uncertainty Mean for these athletes who have spent years training for this moment . Joining me, olympic Gold Medalist and Owner And Founder of the Dominique Dawes gymnastics academy, the magnificent Dominique Dawes. Great to see you. Thanks for being with us. Thanks for having me on. Can you put this into perspective for us . You competed in three olympic games. So at this point, this far out from the games, what would you, what would other athletes be doing to prepare right now . Well, theyre going to be in the zone. They 24 are two months away fro the olympic games. Theyre preparing for championships, olympic trials and definitely not trying to pay attention to everything thats going on on the sidelines with regards to the olympics possibly being canceled. I couldnt imagine being in the shoes of these athletes preparing for tokyo. Do you think thats hard . I know theyre trying to ignore this possibility that the games arent going to happen. But how do you how would you keep that out of your mind . Do you think theyre able to entirely push that out of their heads . I think they are. Olympic athletes, theyre not only physically tough but emotionally strong as well. And so we have this sense about us that we can really stay focused, get in the zone and really focus on the things we can control. I was taught that at a very young age to only focus on the things i can control and these athletes and the coaches. They know this is out of their hands. They dont know whats going to happen with regards to the game so theyre just going to stay focused on preparing and trying to qualify and if it happens, they are excited about that opportunity because america, The World, we need sports. We need the olympics. We need to celebrate mans achievements and really not focus on all the Pain And Hardship that weve all been going through lately. What would it mean for them . Ive spoken with some Olympic Athletes on this show, and it seems like it would be pretty devastating. What would that mean for them to not have this chance to compete . Well, again, these athletes have been disappointed already. The olympics were supposed to happen in 2020. Many of them were geared up and about to peak during that time. And then it was postponed for a year, and that had to be emotionally, physically draining for all of them. However, they stuck it out. Theyve made this commitment and to then be postponed or actually canceled, that would be pretty devastating. It makes me think of the 1980 olympics when the americas boycotted those olympic games and that was pretty devastating for those olympians because they did not get an opportunity to officially become an olympian and compete on that olympic stage. And so i am hopeful that the olympic games will go on. Hopefully all precautions will be put in place. And well have something to celebrate this summer. Okay. Whats your advice. As one of the rare few who has been there, what is your advice, your message for these olympians, as they are gearing up . Oh, these olympians dont need my advice. But they would love to hear from you. They would love to hear from you. Well, i want them to know that they have our support no matter what. You know, were there cheering for them each and every step of the way. Were looking forward to celebrating this. The olympic games would be an opportunity for The World to heal. We need this as a nation, as a world to celebrate the achievements of these phenomenal athletes that have committed their childhood. And so stay the course. Stay focused. Stay in the zone. Dont focus on the things that you have absolutely no control over. We are there for you, and were looking forward to celebrating. I think thats such good advice for the olympians and also for everybody, to be honest. Its wonderful advice to focus on only what you can control. When you look back, dominique, on what the olympics were like for the three that you competed in, not just the competition, but being in the Olympic Village and having kind of social and outreach experiences, how different do you think its going to be for these olympians . You know, its going to be probably the experience that an olympic gymnast experiences. We didnt really get an opportunity to partake in the olympic excitement outside of just competing. It was only in the 1992 olympics that i actually got to stay in the Olympic Village. And for teenagers, it was very much a distraction. So after that, in 1996 in atlanta, georgia, and in 2000 in sydney, australia, we were no longer able to stay in the Olympic Village because it was too much of a distraction. Gymnasts dont go to opening ceremonies, closing ceremonies, and so i will say that these olympic games will probably feel the same as what us olympic gymnasts always went through. We werent able to partake in that because, for us, and im not saying its not a job for the other olympians that have made that sacrifice, but for young olympic gymnasts, we tend to be told that there are certain things that we are there for and it was to get a job done in the athletic arena and not to have fun outside of it. Well, we will see if other people are sharing in that experience at this olympics. I hope not, though. I know. I know, right . I really enjoyed watching you over the years. Thank you so much for joining us today, Dominique Dawes. Thank you for having me on this morning. I appreciate it. Cnns coverage will continue right now with Poppy Harlow and jim sciutto.
