Everyone. Lets begin. Today is a somber day for our country and a very important day. A day to remember a man who has become a symbol in the fight for racial Equality And Police reform in america. One year ago a white Police Officer in minneapolis murdered George Floyd. His killing sent shock waives Thro Shock waves throughout the country. But americas reckoning with racial injustice is far from over. Far from solved. A Jury Convicted Floyds murderer Derek Chauvin last month. He will be sentenced, he is set to be sentenced next month. But will there be lasting change after floyds killing . Were being joined by our reporter from minneapolis. How does it feel there to mark this anniversary . Well, kate, celebration of George Floyds Life And Legacy is going to kick off a day of Remembrance And Reflection on this anniversary. Thats going to start a little later this morning. It will be highlighted by those that have been devastated by Police Violence themselves. But even this year later, after the protests and the energy on the streets has subsided, leaders are hoping to turn that into meaningful policy. There is disagreement on how to move forward. There is no perfect solution. Many of the issues have been issues of contention for decades now. They were unforgettable images. Born from if an unforgettable video. We put that before us at this time. Now a year later, activists meet in this the basement of this Minneapolis Church with a singular mission. The visionary form. Reporter the Unity Community Mediation team has been working directly with the Minneapolis Police department in hopes of turning night a better one. What is different in the fight that youre trying to wage. The difference now is that there is more awareness of the atrocities that the Minneapolis Police department has been getting away with. Thats the difference. This group negotiated a federally mediated Memorandum Of Agreement detailing concerns over use of force, Police Community relations and more. The document then sergeant helped negotiate. The future is what matters. We all have children out here. Even 7 and 8yearold thats afraid when they see police. Strategies over how to proceed with police have been divided at times. Lisa bender and others have Led Attempts to dismantle the Police Department in faufr of a wider encompassing community safety department. We have invested like so many cities for years for decades in policing as basically the only way were investing in keeping people safe. So people think of policing as synonymous with safety. But it isnt working. The mayor of minneapolis sees it differently. The programs need to operate as supplemental to the work that is under way already in our Police Department. You need Law Enforcement and you need the community driven approach working simultaneously to see safety. Fry pointed to changes they made in the past year. Bans on choke holds, unreasonable force by officers and more. But overall, its been a process thats been on going for decades. Meanwhile, names, hash tags, jamar clark, breonna taylor, black faces begin to run together. Mr. Thompson. They just killed someone in brooklyn center. John Thompsons Friend was shot and killed by a minnesota Police Officer in 2016. That oufr was never convicted on any charges. We could have saved George Floyds life. In 2016. When he was murdered. We could have daunte Wrights Life and say were going to put an end to this right now. The stakes after decades of attempts are as high as human life. We have to be serious about being at the table and making some concrete decisions about reform. That will last generationally. A year after one video shook the world, the effort to bring about long Term Change continues. So future Generations Wont have to watch new ones. And family of George Floyd is expected to meet with President Biden later today. It wont be the first time they met with him before George Floyds funeral in the Houston Area last year. Including with their young daughter with, George Floyds judge daughter who was on video in the immediate aftermath of her own Dads Death saying daddy changed the world. The symbolism of George Floyd is unquestionable but now comes the hard part. Catching policy to reality. Kate . Thats right. Thank you. In minutes, members of George Floyds family will be meeting with Nancy Pelosi In Washington and then other members of congress this afternoon just as lawmakers are still negotiating a Police Reform bill that bears George Floyds name. They are missing the hope for deadline to reach a deal, to reach an agreement by today, by this anniversary. They still do remain far apart it appears on several issues including the Sticking Point of qualified immunity for officers. Jessica dean is joining me now on capitol hill. Jessica, how do you describe where negotiations stand . They have been optimistic that they could reach a bipartisan deal. Theyre not there. They are not there. Look, all of these people who are involved in these negotiations and those are three key members of congress, that is democratic senator cory booker, republican senator tim scott, and democratic house of Representatives Member Karen bass of california, they have all maintained that they were never adhering to any deadline. They said over and over again to me, they dont want a rush bill. They want the right bill. They acknowledged for a while it was unlikely that they were going to get anything accomplished by today. I did talk with Senator Booker and Senator Scott in the last 24 hours. And they definitely did express a sharp turn in their optimism. I talked with them just last week where they had both said were still far apart. We have a Long Way To Go. St that is the language they were using. As of yesterday, Senator Scott told me he can see the light at The End of the tunnel. They were beginning to see the framework here and Senator Booker said something similar. We know that they have they and the staffs are working on the weekends, at night. They continue to meet together. But as you mentioned, kate, theyre not there yet. And there are still some big Sticking Points, the biggest one right now is likely qualified immunity. Will they compromise on that . Thats what theyre trying to get around right now. But with he do know that Senator Scott will be meeting with the Floyd Family. Senator booker is meeting with the Floyd Family as well as representative bass. The so theyre certainly talking with the family. A couple things to keep an eye on, they both like and sprekt each other. There is a lot of respect with the negotiators. They all also have the backing of their respective leadership. So if they can come to a deal, the hope is that deal will get done. They have everything working in the favor if its going to happen. If it can happen, it will happen. Thanks so much, jessica. Joining me now are members of George Floyds family. Paris stephens, cousins and two aunts. Kevin mccarthy putting out a statement saying this marjorie is wrong in her intentional decision to compare the horrors of the holocaust with wearing masks is appalling. The statement saying this, representative scalise does not agree with these comments and condemns thee comparisons to the holocaust. Speaking out against vile comparisons like what greene offered doubled down on and then tripled down on this morning should be the most basic expect sags of anyone considered a leader in america. So are they leading here . Because of all the republicans you now probably see put out similar statements, it was not leading at all anymore. Simply following, i he dont know, the polls. Joining me now is Lauren Fox on capitol hill. What is behind this whats behind the statements, driving the statements this morning . Well, obviously, we saw a flurry of the statements coming from House Remepublican Leadersp a few minutes ago. As Mitch Mcconnell was heading to the Senate Floor to give his opening remarks this is something he does every day. And i asked him specifically about Marjorie Taylor Greene. And this is what he told me. Once again, an outrageous representative and comment. A strategic decision. Its important to point out they clearly thought it was trying to make make a comment about this. This is five days after Marjorie Taylor Greene initially made the comments. This is very rare for everyone out there. They kind of smile at you. As Lauren Points out, thank you, lauren. Joining me now is the podcast of politically sound. So, david, what do you think is behind the statements from republican leaders now after five days . Well, whats behind it, clearly, is that they realize they were in an untenable position staying silent. That is not going to work. You cant have a member, even a Rank And File Back Bencher like Marjorie Taylor Greene say the hateful and frankly dangerous antisemitic comments and not comment. That just wasnt going to be a tenable position. I didnt think took them this long to get to that statement today, this morning, kate, we dont know the answer to that yet. It shouldnt have taken this long. Cnn political commentator and ted Cruzs Spokesperson said something that ive been thinking a lot about. She said it yet about kind of who is following who here and who is in charge anymore. She says that green has a tie to the Trump Base. That republican leaders think they need. And she is more powerful than kevin mccarthy. What do you think of that . I would imagine that for a lot of the Trump Base, the republican party which by the way is the base of the republican party. This is the republican party at the moment. Marjorie Taylor Greene probably gets higher marks than does kevin mccarthy. In that sense, i understand amandas point. She is more clout, more sway as sort of True Believer with the Trump Base. I dont know she has more power in the halls of congress. But what you saw is kevin mccarthy, i dont, you know, i dont know if there was a Heads Up down to the former president before he came out. But clearly, he couldnt bring it on friday as soon as he saw the comments to just completely out of hand dismiss it. There seemed to be a little more thought here. Perhaps more concern about alienating the base of the party. They tend to be supportive of folks like Marjorie Taylor Greene. What had had to be done to push him to do this right . A major fundraiser for trumps reelection, someone that is close to kevin mccarthy, Jeff Miller. He put out a strong tweet this morning Saying Wtf is wrong with you . You need to pay a visit to the Holocaust Museum which he would be happy to arrange. Then maybe you would stop making Disgusting Ignorant and offensive tweets and remarks. Why is that significant . Coming from you know, most people out there dont know who Jeff Miller is. But he does have very close ties to the people were talking about . Lets give a little context to that. Jeff miller was a cochair of the Finance Committee for the 2020 republican convention. He is the closest political adviser to rick perry, the former governor of texas and then Cabinet Member inside the trump administration. And he has very close ties to kevin mccarthy. This is a long time adviser to kevin mccarthy. This isnt just a random republican operative. This is somebody who is very much a part of bringing the republican party to the moment that it is in. And him speaking out about this clearly is an important voice in this. And i think probably indicated to a lot of folks that tolerating Marjorie Taylor Greenes comments by your silence for another Moment Wasnt going to be tenable for a large swath of the establishment republican party. And not unrelated, i think, david, is george bushs son. He announced, let everybody know publicly that he is consulting Donald Trump about his political future. He spoke to the Dallas Morning News and put out a tweet. We talked about putting the right team on the field because the democrats are targeting our state. We talked about my race and the vision that i had for the state in texas. He also put up a picture of him on the Cell Phone saying it is great to talk to President Trump to discuss the future of texas and how were going to put america first. I appreciate the words of enCouragement And Support. Talk about break from your family. Its a statement of the larger. It perfectly enkaps lats where the republican party is right now. What is the difference between the bushes and none of them voted for trump and made their feelings known. We saw Donald Trump spend a year taking Jeb Bush apart piece by piece. Here is George P. Bush on the phone with them why . Because George P. Bush is still involved in republican party politics. His name is going to be on a ballot. He is keenly aware he has to keep the Trump Base engaged with him if hes to have a prayer as an elected official in todays republican party politics. He takes a different route than his fathers uncle. He tries and maneuvers with keeping the Trump Base engaged. One way to do that is get on the phone with the former president himself and taking the temperature to see if he can avoid any bombshells from Donald Trump throughout the course of a campaign. As a point of context, George P. Bush is happy to have the Couragement And Support from Donald Trump, his father after the insurrection tweeted, tweeted out about the insurrection and said the president , Donald Trump, had provoked these disgusting events. I mean that is who George P. Bush is happy to get the Support And Encouragement of . Thats where were in this moment . A future in republican party politics is nor important to him than his than siding with his dad on the believe of what instigated that insurrection. Good to see you, david. Coming up for us, he is called him a killer and now President Biden has set a date to meet facetoface with one of his biggest adversaries, details on that next. I had the nightmare again maxine. Angela. Its a very special day. Its hard to believe. All of it happened. It seemed like yesterday its been an emotional roller coaster. Its been hard, Frustration But Today i just feel a day of relief. Because especially ever since the verdict. You know . The support that we received around the love, to get to this day. They say change is going to come but change is here. Im excited about that. You know, paris, you told me the last time that we spoke on the day of the verdict after the verdict that you said that you will continue. You said there is more work to do. You said that to me a couple times, i remember that. Are you hopeful that the moves towards racial justice will be enduring . Are you do you have any fear that as time passes that the momentum, the push, the fire that drove this, that It Fades . Im not worried. Im not worried at all. With our family, All Of Us together. The White House confirmed the date that is set for President Biden to meet with russian President Putin next month in geneva. Theyre meeting on June 16th at The End of bidens first international trip since taking office. So much more to come there. But there is also important developmentes in the Middle East. Secretary of state Tony Blinken is meeting with israeli and palestinian leaders. Blinken over there to help bolster the ceasefire and the fragile ceasefire between israel and hamas after the deadly round of fighting that spanned 11 days. This morning he met with Benjamin Netanyahu who you see there as well as the palestinian President Mahmoud abbas. Nick robertson is joining me with the latest. Im wondering, nick, what you heard in Blinkens Message that he brought over to israel. What is realistically going to come of this visit . Well, there is some cash on the table. Secretary of state saying that he is giving the Palestinians Subject to congressional approval 75 Million in Development Aid and 5. 5 Million for disaster immediate help in gaza. Giving another 32 Million to the u. N. In gaza as well to help the palestinians there. That is sort of the big message to the palestinians. The united states is here to support you financially. Help you rebuild after the conflict. And the message for israel is very clear. Were here. Were your friend. Were youre ally and stand behind you. He got thanked from netanyahu for that and also thanked for, you know, supplying the Military Hardware for Israels Iron Dome defensive shield which saved many lives. And Second Blinken commented on that. There is a Long Way To Go to build trust. And something that is absent here is the initial any initiative to sort of make a big diplomatic push to bring a lasting durable peace. But the aim of this visit really is to prop up that ceasefire, keep tensions down and therefore, keep alive the possibility of that big Peace Deal down the line. Even if it is a glimmer, thank you, nick. Coming up for us, moderna making a big announcement about the vaccine and it could mean very good news for so many kids and their families. As your business changes, the United States Postal Service is changing with it. With ecommerce that runs at the speed of now. Next Day And Twoday shipping nationwide, and returns right from the doorstep. Its a whole New World out there. Lets not keep it waiting. At this hour, a moment to celebrate. A fantastic milestone. The White House expects today the country will hit the point where half of all adults in the united states are fully vaccinated. Also, good news on the Vaccine Front for younger kids. This Morning Moderna announced that their vaccine is safe and appears effective for children as young as 12. The company says that of the almost 4,000 adolescents given the vaccine in their clinical trial, not one of them contracted covid19 after the second dose. Joining me now is a doctor from the brown university of public health. Modernas announcement, it would mean a second vaccine could be available very soon to younger people as young as 12. What does that mean for the country . Kate, thanks for having me back. This is more good news. A couple of things to remember. One is we really now have several vaccine thats incredibly effective. This it will be the second one that will be available for 12 to 17yearolds. There really hasnt been a shortage yet for that group, meaning, if youre 12 to 17yearold now, can you get the Pfizer Vaccine. There is no advantage of moderna. It is just as good as pfizer. Of theyre both terrific. But it will be really important once we get more vaccines around the world for younger people to get either one of these two vaccines. Yeah. No shortage there. Its like were what an amazing turn around this is. When we were counting the doses that were leaving Fat Silts to get there at first. And now there is no shortage of it. This just adds to the goodness of the vaccines and science. And then got news from the White House. Theyre expecting that were going to reach this Point Today of 50 of adults fully vaccinated in america. Im sitting there and i cant tell if this is my cynicism creeping in, the country is half vaccinated or not vaccinated . Again, part of it is a little historical context. There is never been a vaccine or a therapy that half of all american adults have gotten in this short order. We have plenty of work to do. We have to get to that 70 that President Biden laid out. Id like to get higher than that. So im not saying were done. I think we should look at this as half full and celebrate for all the Progress Weve made. What do you think of these incentives that were seeing, you know, million dollar lotteries. I think we saw something knicks tickets are offered to try to inven incentivize people to get vaccinated . My take is there are a lot of people on the fence. People not 100 sure. Maybe its a bit difficult for them to get that vaccine. If this helps those people jump off the fence and get the shot, its great for them. Its great for everybody else. Im a fan. Anything that gets people vaccinated and gets this pandemic behind us, im in. It is also still just shocking when people, you know, in other parts of the world will do anything to get a vaccine that were having to pay people to get vaccines here. Let me ask you about schools really quickly. The two largest School Districts in the country, theyre saying they will be fully open for in person classes in the fall new york, they say theyre not even going to offer a remote option. L. A. Will. Do you think all School Districts should be making this announcement . Do you think districts also should be offering remote classes in the fall as an option . Yes. I think the science on this is very clear. There is no question in my mind that, you know, were going to have plenty of vaccines for every adult. Infection numbers will be low. There is a lot of money in the Rescue Plan for schools to upgrade the ventilation. There really is no excuse not to have full in person classes. Could i imagine for some high risk kids maybe having a remote option . Sure. That could make sense. Those carveouts may be reasonable. For the average kid and the average parent, adult, in person classes is where we need to be. Looking overseas for a second, doctor, there is more talk about variant that is seen in india and how quickly it spreading in the uk. The government there is restricted travel to eight different areas that are most impacted. But the uk has one of the most successful Vaccine Rollouts in the world. So what do you take from this . Does this is this a concerning Data Point for you . Yeah. The so this one, the b 16172, The Indian Variant this is a concerning variant. It appears probably to be the most contagious variant. Thats what it looks like. The good news is our vaccine, the Pfizer Vaccine thats been tested really does hold up very, very well against this variant. So im not worried about escaping the immune response. But in the uk, they havent used a lot of pfizer. They used astrazeneca. We have to crack this closely. This will be a global variant that we have to manage and deal w all the more reason why every american needs to be getting vaccinated quickly. With all the good news, i hate this virus. It just like finding different ways every time we have these good milestones. But we continue. Good to see you, doctor. Thank you. Thank you. Coming up for us, the murder of George Floyd ignited a racial reckoning in america. Lawmakers will miss the president s deadline to get a deal on a Police Reform bill by today. The video of his shocking killing at the hands of police reverberated around the globe and became a rallying cry for change. Sparking massive protests, a sea of people in city after city, black, white, brown, all together, all calling for change. Demanding justice and demanding more than just talk. These images from last summer are truly unforgettable. George floyds murder became inflection point. One year later, where does americas reckonning on Race Stand . Joining me right now is rashaad robinson, president of Color Of Change, a racial justice and civil rights advocacy organization. Good to see you again. It has been quite a bit. Tell me what youve seen has changed in the last year . What do you see as the greatest change after this year of racial reckonning . I think the greatest change has been the cultural change. The changes that are happening all around the country in terms of more and more people waking up to the problems. You know, this time last year many people thought the best we could do in terms of activism was clap outside of our windows or uplift investigative journalist. Racial justice brought people into the streets, moved people to action in new ways and powerful ways and woke up folks that were not black. Many people who are not black to the issues that the community was facing. We have to translate that into actual rule change. Sentiment is not enough. It doesnt actually change lived conditions. But racial justice became a Majority Issue and now we have to work to make it a governing majority. Not just in terms of our policies but the practices of the practices of media, the practices of so many areas of society where the rules and the systems are constantly set up to put black people in harms way. We constantly say that the system is not broken. Its operating exactly the way it was designed and that is what we have to continue to fight to change sp were going to need as many people invested in that effort as possible. There are so many different areas that require examination, real gut checks, real and rel change, in many places, really, tough conversations. But some of the things that weve seen, i was looking through a list at some of the cultural changes weve seen in the last year, washingtons football team, dropping its offensive name after fighting against doing that for years. Nascar banning the display of confederate flags. Companies rethinking brands to eliminate racial stereotypes that weve seen in many of the items that many did not think of before. More than 100 confederate monuments removed from public and private places. Is that enduring change though, rashad . So, you know, thats symbols, and symbols are incredibly important. But just as much as we want to change sort of the sort of the statues that are sort of in our public spaces, we also want to change the statutes that are actually the laws. And both of those things have to work together. You know, we oftentimes say that we Cant Mistake Presence for power. Visibility and awareness is not the same as changing the rules. Thats what were actually continuing to push on. Thats all important. Weve also seen many corporations speak out and stand up and then right after January 6th make more statements but then still give money to some of those politicians that played sort of relationship, had relationships with the insurrectionists, or refused to actually certify the election. So weve watched corporations sort of say one thing sometimes and do another. Its why we launched this program called beyond the statement, which really focuses on corporations moving beyond the statement, pushing corporations that they say they want to address racial justice issues, they have to do racial equity audits. Its why we are pushing companies who say black Lives Matter to really have them interrogate and stop funding things like Police Foundations which have largely been able to provide resources without the Accountability And Transparency that communities deserve, politicians who say theyre on our side but take money from Police Unions who pretend like racial profiling and Police Violence doesnt exhale exist. All of this is important to setting a new standard. We have to raise the floor in whats acceptable and push up the ceiling on whats possible. Thats the power of Culture Change. But inside of Culture Change we have to win real world victories. Whether its actually getting the George Floyd act passed where it has real teeth to deal with things like qualified immunity which holds accountable Police Departments to transparency standards, or the work at the local level, all around the country. To roll back the funding to police budgets, to actually deal with really investing money into places that we know will actually strengthen Public Safety. You know, one thing we really talk about at Color Of Change is not reimagining policing, but reimagining Public Safety. When we reimagine Public Safety and we put things at the center, then we invest in things like mental health. We invest in things like Health Care and education and so many other things that we know make communities safe and whole. The Policy Change and the Culture Change has to be at the heart of the work and the heart of the legacy of our fight from last year, and our work in the years to come. Well, that was what i was going to ask you about just really quickly. I had George Floyds cousin that told me earlier this hour she is extremely hopeful, shes extremely hopeful that change is coming, theyre seeing it now, she says, and she says shes not concerned the momentum is falling away, that the movement is stalled. Are you as hopeful as she is . Do you feel the momentum continues . Do you fear that as time passes, though, It Fades . I wake up every morning for a fierce sense of optimism of whats possible. When i g et aet the stories, bl folks at the center of the story, allies of every single race wanting to figure out what they can do, yes, movements have always ebbed and flowed. But over the last ten years, if you think about the progress that we have made, where people said saying black Lives Matter made you a racist to like having black Lives Matter on streets and raised up in front of capitol buildings. All of these things is important and what we want to do is make sure that we just dont simply accept presence but that we build power and that we change rules. Its good to see you, rashad, thanks for being here on this day. And thank you all so much for joining us today at this hour. John king picks up our coverage right now, after a break.
