Important because, again, this was in november, and china reported to the World Health Organization that the first patient with covidlike symptoms was recorded in december of 2019. One source who has seen the intelligence says, quote, At The End of the day there is still nothing definitive. Cnns natasha and David Culver are following this for us. Natasha, what are you learning about how this piece of intel fits into what the u. S. Knows about the origins of covid19 . Reporter its another piece of the puzzle, ana, the u. S. Intelligence community has low confidence in its assessment of the origins of the coronavirus pandemic, meaning that they dont really know exactly where, how or even when the pandemic spread. What this does, though, is It Kind of up the timeline a bit with regard to the potential theories about where this pandemic actually began. Importantly, though, the Intelligence Community still doesnt know whether these researchers were actually sick with coronavirus. All they know is they had symptoms consistent with covid19, that also could have been consistent with other seasonal illnesses like the flu, for example. So while this does provide another kind of Data Point for the Intelligence Community to look at with regard to potentially the idea that this could have leeked from a lab, one of the many labs that was researching coronavirus in bats for example around that period of time, it also is not conclusive and this is something our sources emphasize to us that the overall assessment of the Intel Community remains that really its difficult to say anything about the origins of this pandemic beyond the fact that it did emerge from china. And david, all along there has been criticism that china has been less than helpful in letting investigators come in to figure this out. How is china responding to this new revelation . Youre right about the criticism. Its from the u. S. , the uk, from european nations. As far as chinas response, theyre not happy with this. They have pushed back against this repeatedly over the last Year Plus and continuing to do so as recently as monday when the Foreign Ministry spoke about this, they answered a question if this possible origin theory, one they again consider to have ruled out a long time ago. I want you to listen to how the Foreign Ministry is reshaping the narrative. Take a listen. Translator the Wuhan Institute Of Virology Chinese Academy Of Sciences issued a Vel Rant Statement on March 23rd this year. Stating that before December 20th 2019 coronavirus was not contracted at the Wuhan Institute Of Virology, until now there has been zero infection of staff and postgraduate students at the institute. The united states continues to hype the lab leak theory, does It Care about Origin Tracing or is it just trying to divert attention . Reshaping this to suggest that the united states is hyping things, and State Media there calling this a complete lie, those words attributed to the director of the wuhan national biosafety lab. I want to show you some video, ana, of when we were there in january of this year. Weve made three trips in the past year. The most recent quinn sided with the w. H. O. Field team likewise on the ground there, they were doing firsthand investigations, now that team in and of itself has also faced a lot of scrutiny, folks suggesting its been heavily influenced by china, one of the members having done previous research in the wuhan institute of Virology Lab and having a partnership with them, its become highly politicized and it raises more questions along with this now u. S. Intelligence report to suggest the timeline goes back even further. Ana . Okay, thank you very much for that reporting, David Culver, and natasha bertrand. As this investigation into how it all began continues, here in the u. S. We have promising indications this country is finally getting a handle on the coronavirus pandemic. Six states reported less than one Covid Death per day last week. And nearly half, half of the entire u. S. Population has now received at least one dose of the covid vaccine, and almost 40 are fully vaccinated. Cnns Elizabeth Cohen is joining us now, elizabeth, after more than a year of tragedy and struggle, i dont want to bury this good news today. What are the trends showing . Thats right, it feels a bit like we can take a deep breath right now. So lets Take A Look at what these numbers have looked like over the month. When you see this graph, wow, that peak in sort of january, february, and now down to levels not seen since june of last year. That is really wonderful news. We dont want to take away from the fact that people are still dying every day from covid in this country, and that things could get worse in the fall or if a variant arrives. But, still, those are some pretty nice looking numbers. Lets Take A Look at why those numbers are coming down, here is why. A benchmark reached in the united states, those states in red, most of them in the northeast. They have 70 or plus of adults vaccinated with at least one dose, thats pretty amazing. So at least 70 of adults in those states have had at least one dose, the goal that President Biden has for the country by july 4th. Lets Take A Look at the states on their way to reaching this milestone, about half of states, 50 of people have had at least one dose. So you can see that we are on our way, there still does seem to be a small but sizable percentage of americans who seem fairly dug in that they are in the going to get vaccinated. Lets hope as time goes by they will see that vaccination works and it doesnt get people sick so we can see these Case Numbers continue do go down. Elizabeth cohen, thank you about laying that out here. Back to the origin, though, and listen to what former Cdc Director Dr. Robert redfield told our own dr. Sanjay gupta back in march. If i was to guess this virus started Transmitting Somewhere in september and october in wuhan. September october. Thats my view, im allowed to have opinions. I am of the Point Of View that i still think the most likely ideology of this pathogen in Pew Wuhan was from a laboratory. And with us dr. Abdul el sayed. Thank you for being with us here. Your head is gigantic right now and taking up the entire screen but i know we were having connections issues with you. Im so glad youre with me. Talk to me about what we just heard from dr. Redfield and what we are learning today about the origins and more questions arounding whether this came from a lab or from nature. We previously knew these researchers in wuhan got sick but the new detail here is that they were sick enough to go to the hospital for care. What does this tell you . Thats right, we have to be interpreting this in the context of a w. H. O. Report that was, of course, heavily chaperoned in the production by the chinese government, and one of the important details that have been included when the Research Team investigating the etiology of this pandemic, when they were putting together the report one of the pieces of evidence is that nobody at the wuhan institute got sick. We understand thats not true, and that researchers there had gotten sick. Whats important to understand is th is that this is not confirmatory. It fundamentally changes the calculus and the understanding of where it came from. The highest probability is still that animals made the jump to humans. Why is that still the highest probability . When we understand these types of illnesses, the kinds of viruses that emerge out of nowhere, they almost always come from animals and animals are constantly harboring viruses that infect those Animal Species but rarely can jump to humans. But when those viruses may, through evolution, the Kpas Toy the jump and because our Immune Systems are completely naive to the viruses, if they can move between human and human, they can cause the kind of pandemics weve been experiencing. Thats the highest probability outcome. Thats how almost every other virus thats Hit Humanity and caused a pandemic has come through. It has been about 18 months, and this is a virus that has killed now, nearly 3. 5 million people globally. Are you surprised, doctor, we still dont know the origin, and why is it so important to figure that out . You know, ana, what youre getting at is a really important point. This is critical for us to understand where this virus is coming from, how it made the jump, and how it infected so many people. And the fact that the chinese government has not been honest with the public, the Worlds Public is really concerning. And this new evidence definitely does shake the ground on which we had thought we were walking with this information, and so, yes, it is concerning that 18 months after the emergence of the virus we dont know where it came from. Its korng that the government has not been honest and forthcoming about the information and its concerning that there is a viral laboratory in the same city from which this virus emerged. We need more information and what we need to be doing is leaning on the chinese government to be open, transparent and honest, and not withhold the facts and not try and cover up what is known. We need to understand what happened, this has shaken the globe, and we deserve some transparency here. If it came from a Lab Versus in nature what are the implications in terms of how strong the virus is, or how we fight it, would it be different . Well, it really wouldnt change how we fight it, per se, but its plausible that a virus that emerged from a lab, if they were doing experiments, where they increase the advvirulence,e capacity to cause disease, the virus that would emerge would be stronger. And would make more people more sick. It does have implications for understanding how this happens. The other point here is that there are labs that do research about viruses all over the world and making sure that were keeping those labs safe and secure is clearly a responsibility of ours, but of course if a pandemic were to have occurred because a virus were to have escaped one of these labs it should change the calculus with respect to bioethics of doing this kind of research, and making those kinds of laboratories far more secure than they might be right now. Dr. Abdul elsayed, we really appreciate you being there for us today. America has a problem, more than a Dozen Mass shootings since friday, and deaths from Gun Violence are up, 23 already this year. Too many families across the country are dprgrieving after another weekend of devastating violence, 13 Mass Shootings in various states since friday, 13 people are dead, more than 70 wounded and according to the Gun Violence archive, more than 230 people have been killed in Mass Shootings where four more people are shot so far this year. Cnns Polo Sandoval is looking at another weekend of violence for us. Reporter a Deadly Spike in Gun Violence putting communities across the united states on edge this morning, two people shot during an attempted robbery at a new York City subway station. Getting over covid and the madness is back. Reporter a House Party left two dead and others wounded, and three people were shot to death at an atlanta area condominium. And ohio, a shooting outside a bar. It breaks my heart to hear when we have young men and women who die at a young age, so much potential ahead of them. A 14yearold girl was killed and 14 others shot attending what police are calling an unauthorized concert in north charleston, south carolina. Its a sad day that we have to be here today to talk about another death of another young person. Reporter two men were shot and killed and eight others injured in Downtown Minneapolis early saturday morning, one of the victims died the same day he was scheduled to graduate from college. According to the Gun Violence archive over 7,500 people have died from Gun Violence in the united states this year, including at least 471 teenagers and 120 children. Not only do we want justice for our babies we dont want these people out here to shoot Somebody Else babies, another Press Conference because another family will be standing up here with us. Reporter and new Jersey State officials with an update on the investigation regarding the shooting at the House Party saying that was actually a large Birthday Party that was specifically targeted, investigators dont believe it was a random act of violence and they shared more on the two people that were killed, a man and a woman from the community, as is a 36yearold man who was also arrested facing weaponrelated charges authorities now hoping that somebody will come forward with additional information as they do expect more arrests, authorities also here in new jersey, ana, addressing this growing issue of Gun Violence, not just what happened here, but throughout the rest of the country as well. Ana . So heartbreaking, Polo Sandoval, thank you. And joining us retired Lapd Sergeant Cheryl dorsey, the author of the book black and blue, sergeant dorsey, Gun Violence is up 23 so far this year according to the Gun Violence archive with more than 7,500 people dead from Gun Violence just this year here in the u. S. Whats your reaction . Well, listen, ive said all along, you know, if folks werent outraged to point where something could be done when 20 plus children were shot and killed what else would it take to get their attention . So i think weve become desensitized quite frankly regarding the use of weapons, military styled weapons in an urban environment, it makes no sense. Police, of course, have to respond to all of these incidents. While they are under increased scrutiny right now over how they do their jobs at the same time Police Departments around the country are saying theyre struggling to retain and recruit officers. Do you think this has to do with police facing increased scrutiny . Well, certainly we know that, you know, theres a term when officers are feelings are hurt because theyre required to do their job with empathy, compassion and respect, some who are there for other reasons, leave, dont want to do the job, slow down, work daytoday, and its problematic and recruiting is an issue and i think departments should look to folks who have an interest in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice students and the like if youre looking for someone to replace those who dont want to be there we dont want them there. I have a cousin who is a police officer, and hes talked about morale really being down and feeling very villainized by the people he wants to serve. What are you hearing from officers you know who are still on active duty . What is the impact, you know, staffing might be having on everyday Police Work that they do . Well, officers have always been known to Belly Ache and cry when they dont get their way but, again, this is a tough job and its not for everyone, everyone who wants to be the Police Shouldnt be and once they identify themselves we need to believe what theyre telling us to be true. Lets talk about the issue of Police Reform, because, you know, thats where were leading in this conversation. It is front and center right now, this week, as we approach one year republicans and democrats are still not on the same page here and there are two big sticking points, qualified immunity, Which Shields Police Officers from sifrl lawsuits. The other issue is the standard for criminally prosecuting Police Officers, democrats want to lower the standard, republicans say they dont want to touch it. Where do you stand on these two issues . Well, i think that lowering the standard would be helpful and im all in favor of totally dismantling qualified immunity, if youre not going to get rid of it. Gop said its a nonstarter discussing it. I think the democrats should stand firm and if qualified immunity is off the table, then its not worth pursuing. If officers if police chiefs, if others who look over these uses of force are not intent on murdering people, why are you so worried about civil liability . If youre going to do your job the way youre trained and taught, theres not an issue for you. So you dont think Police Officers or Police Unions have an issue with this at all . Oh, no, absolutely they do. They dont want qualified immunity to go away, some, not all, some, certainly the Police Unions are in of qualified immunity remaining intact. Thats been a sticky point in california, im saying if officers and listen, by and large most do their job professionally. Im not talking about all police but we have to admit there are some out there like Derek Chauvin. Every department has a few. Weve seen them. If you dont want to get rid of qualified immunity, then thats a problem for me. If officers are not intent on killing folks like Derek Chauvin and Kim Potter and ruston what are you worried about . There are obviously a lot of really good Police Officers out there as well. And i think we all appreciate you saying the ones who have ill intentions, they need to go, and people who make mistakes on the job do need to have accountability, of course, but i also feel like are you trying to throw out the good in exchange for the perfect . I dont know the exact saying. But, this Police Reform thats been discussed, there are a number of things that it seems like democrats, republicans and people in Law Enforcement all agree upon, the house passed version of this legislation includes things like, you know, certain Policing Practices are restricted, related to no Knock Warrants and choke holds, creating a national registry to really compile data on complaints and records of police misconduct. It establishes new reporting requirements pertaining to the use of force, officer misconduct, other Routine Traffic Practices like stops and searches, if they agree on these items, is there reason to move forward and pass what they agree on, Isnt Something better than nothing . Well, not to my mind because qualified immunity is a problem. Let me tell you what they dont talk about. They talk about no Knock Warrants and there being a restriction, or a prohibition of no Knock Warrants, only on federal drug warrants, says nothing about state and local drug warrants, which are the majority of the ones that we see that are problematic. Breonna taylor was not served a Search Warrant by a federal government. They talk about a federal registry. You think Derek Chauvin wasnt already on a list. He had 18 personnel complaints. Do you think the officer that shot and paralyzed Jacob Blake was not already on a list, the officer who shot Rayshard Brooks in the back was not on a list . We know this to be true because of the ronald greene incident. The Fish Rots from the led and their Superintendent Lamar Davis has hid this video for two years. So qualified immunity must be on the table, or to me, its pointless. Cheryl dorsey, got to leave it there, the former sergeant from lapd, really appreciate you being with us, thank you for your perspective. Thank you. Facts are facts. Lies are lies. Com commitment too political, too redundant, too backward looking, republicans rolling out any reason they can to find a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6th capitol insurrection. And heres a new one. Well, i think its too early to create a commission and i believe republicans in the senate will decide that its too early to create that commission. A lot of republicans just want this commission to go away. But Gop Congressman Adam kinzinger who supports the investigation says his party should deal with this issue now. Heres a revelation, this is going to the 2022 midterms anyway particularly if us as republicans dont take ownership for what happened, if every other day theres a new Conspiracy Theory about what happened at the capitol, anybody but what it was. And so yeah, i think it would go to 2022 and were look like were sitting here denying reality and facts. Gloria borger is here with us. It has been 4 1 2 months, more than 400 arrests, whats your reaction to Senator Blunt saying it is too soon for a commission . I dont understand his reasoning. The only way to explain it is that of course he doesnt want to be relitigating what happened in 2020 and 2022. Senator thune said the quiet part out loud last week in saying just that. They dont want to be talking about donald trump, and the insurrection, and the fact that more than half of republicans, according to some polls, now believe these were really antitrump people dressing up as protrump people who invaded the capitol. So he wants to move beyond it, so he can get on with talking about the election, and so the you know, the senate can you know, the republicans can take control of the senate. I think hes doing this to help his friend mitch mcconnell, as we know blunt is retiring but i think hes doing it because he wants to change the conversation. But what does he want to wait for . The Oneyear Anniversary . I mean, thats just absurd. And also absurd is this next story about Marjorie Taylor Greene, theyve been whitewashing what happened at the capitol, republicans have, and then continuing to support the Big Lie and now they are staying silent when it comes To Marg listen to what she said . We can look back at a time in history where people were told to wear a Gold Star and definitely treated like second class citizens, so much so that they were put in trains and taken to Gas Chambers in Nazi Germany and this is exactly the type of abuse that Nancy Pelosi is talking about. I still cant get over the guy just nodding along with her as shes saying these things, gloria, hakeem jeffries, the chair of the House Democratic caucus, he tweeted this, kevin who . Marjorie Taylor Greene is running the House Republican Conference. Is he right . I think the House Republican Conference is running away from Marjorie Taylor Greene privately but publicly the fact that they have not, the leadership has not come out and denounced these antisemitic statements, these statements which say democrats are effectively nazis, which seems to be her theme, is ridiculous and unforgivable. And if i were a supporter of theirs who was jewish, who was donating money, id be burning up the Phone Lines right now saying why arent you guys out there, saying that this is unacceptable dialogue . And that she needs to be to be called in and said you cannot do this, you should not be saying these things, and if you believe these things, there is no place for you in the united states congress. I mean, these statements get more and more outrageous. She gets more and more publicity and she says, look, its great in my district, its fine with the people who voted me in. The question you then have to ask, is this the road the leadership in the house wants to take . Is this what they want to be known for as they head into 2022 and beyond . I mean, at some point you have to take a stand and say, she does not speak for us, period. When is enough, enough . Before i let you go i dont want to end on that note, i want to ask you about something more substantive. When it comes to policies, getting legislation passed on behalf of the american people there seems to be a bit of a roadblock as the president s deadlines are approaching on Police Reform, infrastructure packages. Its supposed to be the most bipartisan issue. President biden over the weekend, he slashed 500 billion from his original proposal as a counter to republicans. Quickly, if you will, where do you see this headed . Well, i think its headed back Behind Closed Doors and into more negotiations. Look, i dont think biden is going to get what he wants. And the real question, and neither will republicans, and i think the real question here is, are the democrats going to be able to get enough democrats On Board with them to go it alone through the Budget Process where they only need 50 votes . And thats going to be the question that faces the President And Bernie sanders, the chairman of the budget committee. Gloria gorborger, good to se you, and congrats on your award over the weekend. Well deserved. Thank you, thank you. Imagine being on an airplane thats forced to land after a Security Alert but theres no real threat and the real reason is politics. A Watchdog Report revealing Gut Brenching details about how parents separated from their children at the u. S. Border in the trump years were deported without even being given the opportunity to take their children with them. Cnns Priscilla Alvarez is on this, this makes an already horrible situation so much worse. Reporter ana, this report confirms what Immigrant Advocates and attorneys have said from the beginning, which is that some parents were deported from the united states without their children despite wanting to be with their children. Now, this department of Homeland Security Inspector general report captures the period of July 2017 to july 2018. Now, under the Trump Administration this report found immigration and Customs Enforcement removed parents despite those parents wanting to be with their children upon removal. It also found that some documentation with Parents Decision were, quote, significantly flawed. Now, this runs contradictory to what senior officials were saying at the time. Heres what the department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen told lawmakers in december of 2018. Every parent had the choice to bring the child back with them when they were removed, the ones who did not bring the children with them made the choice not to have the child accompany them. Reporter we now know, ana, that was not the case for everyone. In fact, some parents, including three cited in this report, were removed without their children despite wanting to be with them. And there are still families separated, how many, do we know at this point . We do, theres an ongoing family separation case, there was a Court Filing last week, and attorneys said that the parents, theyre still looking for the parents of more than 390 children, somewhere around 391. This is a number that has reduced over time, month by month, but it just underscores how difficult its been. And what is being done . What do we know about the actions, the biden administration is taking, since theyve come in and some of these families have been separated for years, what are they doing to try to find the families . Early on in the biden administration, they set up a Task Force to find the families, but attorneys separately are doing the work, on the ground searches, everything to reach these parents and with the backing of the biden administration to get them here. Priscilla alvarez, thank you for your ongoing reporting and your hard work on all of this. This sounds like a riddle. But i swear its not. Do they know this door is locked now listen to this a group of rural counties in oregon want out. They are trying to secede from the state and join idaho. Chris cillizza joins to us plain. This seems extreme. How did it come to this. Not unheard of ia has always talked about northern and upstate new york. It happens. But yes this is a little extreme. Because we had a vote on it last week. Let me quickly explain on the map why this matters. Here is how you need to understand oregon its a democratic state. Not really. They have given me new found power to draw on this bad boy. Think of it this way. This d. This r. Thats what were talking about. These five counties in the eastern part of the state much more conservative more rural. Theyre the ones who voted to secede, although nonbinding. Why . Pandemic Shutdown Frustrations in rural counties. Remember rural counties didnt have as many cases as places like Portland Oregon did and restrictions hit harder even though fewer cases. Obviously we know portland has been in the news, anas with last several years, the clashes between the police and Protests Li protesters there. And then biden only won a few counties in oregon but he carried the state because thats where people live. Let me though you on the map. Biden winds up winning only ten counties. Here is the line. Bend west is what you have to think about biden wins the ten counties thats where earn lives. Donald trump wins overwhelming tli there. Thats why the desire to leave head this way to idaho. But, again, thats a split in the state. No state is as simple as it seems and oregon is one. Thats interesting. Whats the likelihood of this happening . Yes. So, important. Not likely. Ill tell you wipe. There is a bunch of hurdles. The biggest is the oregon and Idaho Legislatures you have to approve it. Hoird might want more people and give them more say in congress. The Oregon Legislature is heavily democratic. Not going to happen. Then it would have been congressional approval. We know congress is controlled d in the House D in the senate not going to happen. One other thing thats fascinating. Economic headwinds. Pot is legal in oregon and has been a huge Tax Revenue Wind fall for oregon. Its not legal in idaho. There would be problems as it relates to Tax Revenue among other things. This isnt going to happen any time soon ana. But its fascinating when how states think about themselves and how citizens within the states think. Its very interesting. Chris cillizza you break it down like No One Else thank you. Thank you. And a reminder im asking to you tell us how you make your comeback after this pandemic. Who are you seeing . What are you doing . What do you miss the most and are excited to do again .
