Thanks so much for joining us. At this hour, the united states is making incredible gains in the fight against the coronavirus. By virtually every measure, america is heading in the right direction. J ust in time for memorial day weekend. And the unofficial kickoff to summer. St New Cases down 56 in the last month. The lowest level since last june. Deaths down 23 in the last four weeks. That is a lowest theyve been since last july. Hospitalizations also down nearly 30 over the last month. And on the vaccine front, the u. S. Is hitting a new milestone. Nearly half of the entire population has now received at least one dose. The nearly 40 of americans are fully vaccinated. But the numbers of Vaccine Doses administered each day has fallen from more than Three Million at that High Point a month ago to 1. 8 million right now. But overall, these trends show that were reaching the long sought hope on the horizon. That always felt just a little bit out of reach. But really it does not feel that way anymore. This weekend we also saw evidence of that, crowds back in arenas. Including here in new York City where 15,000 fans were in Madison Square Garden to watch the knicks playoff game. Just hearing the roar of a crowd is a start willing amazing sensation. This great news comes as an Intelligence Report is going to fuel further debate. They find several scientists in a lab in wuhan china were hospitalized with an unknown illness in november of 2019. That is a month before they reported the first cases of covid19. Joining me right now is David Culver in shanghai with more on this Intelligence Report. And what you can take from it cant extrapolate, cant what we do with it now. What are you learning david . It doesnt bring us right to the origin of this virus which i know most folks are trying to figure out. And they would want to know. Especially the w. H. O. Experts and really scientists around the world. But heres what we can tell you from this report. It suggests that the researchers working at the institute of virology, you have to remember wuhan is where the original outbreak of this virus was. Were apparently so sick that they had to go to the hospital in november of 2019. Now that is a significant amount of time, several weeks really before this outbreak really took hold. And chinese officials have been pushing back on this for more than a year now. They have suggested that it did not leak from a lab. The original source was believed to have been the seafood market. That is an area that was shut down rather quickly January 1st of 2020 and scrubbed clean. But now the new intelligence is suggesting with even more fingers pointing at the possibility this originated in a lab and potentially leaked. Chinese officials though are adamant that this is not how this played out. I want you to look at one quote put in global times. Again, remember this is state run media. And this is the director of the wuhan National Biosafety Lab quoted. He said he read it. Regarding the report. He says its a complete lie. The claims are groundless. The lab has not been aware of this situation. And i dont even know where such information came from. Now i want to show you some video of when we were most recently down in wuhan. My team and i traveled there for the one Year Anniversary of the outbreak. And Youll Notice this is a structure that is heavily fortified. It is rather secure. You cant get that close to it. That is as close as we got it to. That is in part because its a biosafety lab. Kate, it also is suggestive of them not wanting us anywhere near it. David, thank you so much for your reporting. I do want to ask you about just this moment that were in here in the united states. New cases, hospitalizations, deaths. Down across the board. The former fda commissioner, he said over the weekend that at some point in june his belief is that were going to probably approach one case per 100,000 per day. What does that mean for all of us. It is amazing news. It came about started happening when we reached a 40 first Dose Vaccination Rate on april 14th. The cases started coming down and down and down. And now theyve just its very clear theyre almost coming down since we reached that 40 and now were at 50 . First dose of the entire u. S. Population. 60 , if you want to just focus it in on adults who are eligible for the vaccine. This is exactly what we have seen in countries that went faster than we. You get past the certain Inflection Point and they start plummeting. Luckily, of course, so does severe disease. It means a lot. It means that the summer is looking bright. And it means that when we get to that 10,000 or about 25,000 cases over the entire country, 10,000 was the metric that dr. Fauci put in on April 16th that said, you know, the pandemic is at least in our country essentially almost over. Thats where were getting to. So its very good news. Gottlieb also said with the infections and Vaccine Rates that were looking at now that kids dont need to wear masks outside anymore. Science doesnt point that way. They still need to wear them in kind of crowded indoor school like settings if you will. We talked about masks many, many times. What do you think of that assessment . You know, i agree right now for indoor settings. Outdoor settings, really Summer Camp is coming. The cdc has to take away that Summer Camp guidance that indicates that children should be wearing mask s outside. It is hard to contemplate the heat implications of that. In terms of inside, watt i that the uk did it, i think this is really clear. We talked about this before too, go to a certain metric and then lift masks for children inside. And that metri he c that they used and just lifted indoor masking for children on May 17th in their country, was about 2 to 3 hospitalizations over 100,000 people if you werent counting cases. Or you can do it by cases if there is good testing in your area. Kids should be wearing them inside in most places that are not that metric. But that will allow us to think about going back to Normal School in the fall. I think were going to absolutely be there. And there are elements of children needing to especially young children with Vowel Formation and learning they dont need masks. And thats why the uk did this. Im going to follow our friends and say lets put in a clean metric and tell the country when indoor masking can be relieved for children. Let me just ask you on schools. New York Citys mayor just this morning said, like, he made the announcement that come september new York City public schools will be open five days a week with no remote Option N your mind, i dont know. Should this even be a question for the fall at this point . I dont think it should even be a question that we should have Normal School in the fall. The Mental Health effects some children have been real about prolonged closures. The question that is only remaining for the fall beyond normal in Person Learning is Mask Distancing and ventilation. And those three requirements are only if we dont have low cases in the setting of high immunity. The uk has normal full on no masks, you know, no ventilation, no distancing. Thats what theyre doing in their schools. Because they had such a high Immunity Rate and low case rate. They made that decision for their country on May 17th. I think well be there by the fall in our country as well. There is also a lot of talk over the weekend about what the cdc is calling relatively few case of the inflammation of the heart being seen in young people vaccinated. The cdc is looking into it. I want to play what the former acting Cdc Director said about it this morning. At this point there is nothing to raise concern. Pt this is telling me that The System is working. And we do know that Covid19 Infection itself can be very serious. We lost hundreds of children. There have been thousands that have been hospitalized. The thousands that developed an inflammatory syndrome. One of the pieces of that is mayocarditis. The risk of covid19 is so much greater than any theoretical risk from the vaccine. Doctor, any concern about a negative Side Effect to this . Especially in kids. It is going to scare people. Do you have concerns . I do. I actually have a 13yearold and ive given him the one dose. Im going to Waiten O The Second dose until i just see what the acip says. The reason on this is i definitely think ill give it to him in the future. This is the way to think about this in children that could be linked from vaccines. Lets investigate. They have been shown in israel. There is more reporting coming out this week. Reporter in new jersey, police are investigating an incident at a House Party that left two dead and 12 others wounded late saturday night. Police also discovered three people shot to death at an atlanta area condominium. Three people are dead and eight others injured outside a shooting outside a bar. It breaks my heart to hear when we have young men and women that die at a young age so much potential ahead of them. A 14yearold girl is killed and 14 others shot attending what police are calling an unauthorized concert in north charleston, south carolina. It is a sad day that we have to be here today to talk about another death of another young person. Reporter one of the victims died the same day he was scheduled to graduate from college. According to the Gun Violence archive, over 7,500 people have died from Gun Violence in the united states this year. Thats including at least 117 teenagers and 120 children. He said mommy, my tummy hurts. So she went and she picked him up. And he was bleeding on her. He was fatally shot in an apparent Road Rage Incident in orange county, california, and his mother was driving him to kindergarten friday morning. The 6yearolds Family is seeking justice and asking the public for any information. Please help us find the people that did this to my little brother. Hes only 6. He was so sweet. Reporter in minneapolis, leaders are offers a 30,000 we regard to find who is responsible for three recent shootings that left one child dead and two others critically injured. One of them, senator richard burr, has said he will not support the commission. Senator Susan Collins said she was open to it. She could support it. Thats why they decided to kill it and not support it. First of all, obviously, this isnt just like the media falsely or glibly describing her comments. She went on Tv Show and specifically said that Nancy Pe lose yea wanting unvaccinated members of congress was the same type of thing as jews having to wear gold stars and then being taken away and killed in Gas Chambers by the nazis. I mean thats what she said. So first of all, there is a whole strain in the republican party now that is increasingly just about attention. Trolling on twitter and the like. Democrats do it too. So this one of more than a dozen lawsuits filed in georgia after Donald Trump lost the state in the 2020 election. And this particular lawsuit said there was counterfeit mail in ballots in Fulton County. They want to examine the ballots. Now for starters, kate, nothing that happens here can overturn the election. It was already certified. Its a lot different than what were seeing in arizona. The judge has said that while he will unseal the roughly 147,000 mail in Absentee Ballots in Fulton County, the plaintiffs cannot handle the ballots. This they can scan and copy the ballots but that is it. We dont know how its going to go down at this point. The plaintiffs still have to submit the proposal to the judge before the 28th of may. Fulton county officials, theyre democrats, they said, look this is just a perpetuation of the big lie. And that this is already searched for. That is something that gabriel sterling, an official with the Georgia Secretary of states office, senate republican, backed up and said the same. Its from trump supporters people. The claims are pristine ballots and unfolded ballots that were inserted. There is machine marked ballots. There is no evidence of any of that. Our Law Enforcement officers and Secretary Of State offices spent thousands of hours examining ballots in Fulton County and other counties trying to track these kind of claims down. So far we have seen nothing give any merit to it. Yeah. While we arent seeing any of these cases actually be du successful to overturn the election, the state of georgia has the claims being cited in real election bills that have become law in some states. Lee, do you have any better understanding of that moment when the supervising officer is praising the other the troopers . It just really sticks out to me. I want to know more of what hes talking about. Yeah. And to press more towards Danielles Point in responding to that moment in the video, there should be criminal charges at a State Level and a federal level that have these men arrested based on that very moment. In that moment you have a supervising Officer Lieutenant John Clary who is present while these men are actively abusing a handcuffed and fully compliant suspect. So all former excuses about, you know, the resisting and being necessary to hold him down because he was so strong, thats not reflected in that video at all. You have a very a relatively calm scene where theyre actively abusing Ronald Green in the presence of a supervisor and he is telling them that theyre doing a good job and that theyre following the policies that you would expect them to follow in the situation. Its a systemic issue that goes all the way up the ladder. And dinell, we will continue to follow every step of these investigations. As you mentioned, its been two years and you havent gotten a straight answer from the beginning. I mean, do you at this point think you are getting closer to the truth . Are you hopeful that you will get there . When you say the Truth Weve already seen it all. I mean weve seen enough. Weve seen enough. Yeah. You know, weve seen enough. To say that charges need to be filed immediately from the very top including governor edwards down to the medical examiner. Everyone is part of this coverup and they all need to be prosecuted.
