Were told he died in a car accident. Prince william slamming the bbc and it all has to do with an interview of Princess Diana back in 1995. There has been calm in Gaza And Israel for the past nine hours now after an unconditional ceasefire took effect at 2 00 a. M. Local time. Both sides agreeing to end 11 days of fighting in a deal born of pressure from the u. S. And mediation by egypt. The Gaza Health Ministry run by hamas reports 232 palestinians were killed since the escalation in fighting last week. The number of dead in israel is 12, double its civilian Death Toll from the last Big Confrontation Seven years ago. U. S. Secretary of state Antony Blinken will travel to The Middle East in the coming days to meet with the israeli and palestinian leadership, and on Thursday President biden warned there is still much to be done to avoid the next major confrontation. I believe the palestinians and israelis equally deserve to live safely and securely and to enjoy equal measures of freedom, prosperity and democracy. My administration will continue our quiet, relentless diplomacy toward that end. I believe we have a genuine opportunity to make progress and ive committed to working for it. For more on the fragile agreement here is cnn international diplomatic editor nic robertson. Reporter under intense international pressure, Israels Security Cabinet agreeing to an egyptian brokered ceasefire. Hamas signing up, too. End of hostilities, 2 00 a. M. Local, but in a tweet Israels Defense Minister warning the reality on the ground will determine whether we resume operations. But in the minutes prior to the agreement, israeli war planes still hitting targets in gaza. So were going to try to get ourselves to a safer place here. Hamas rockets still targeting israel. And not everyone happy with netanyahus decision. Right now the government is having the Security Cabinet meeting. What are you hoping is going to come out of that meeting . I dont want to stop. I think if we started we have to end it and go to The End. Reporter earlier in the day Hamas Rockets hitting right outside our broadcast location. Also in the nearby town of ashkelon, more than 340 rockets fired according to Israels Defense forces since an overnight pause by hamas. Israeli Air Strikes continued in gaza, too, targeting, they said, hamas tunnels, rocket launchers, commanders and weapon stores. U. N. Officials in gaza say more than 70,000 palestinians have been displaced during the 11 days of fighting, and are calling for 38 Million in immediate aid to help with essentials. Hundreds of millions more needed, they say, if the ceasefire takes hold. The situation, according to the u. N. Secretary general, is dire. If there is it is the lives of children in gaza today. Reporter even before an end to the attacks palestinian leaders describing the violence of occupation that has no end in sight. This occupation should end and the sufferings of our people in gaza, in jerusalem, in the West Bank, in the Refugee Banks of lebanon should also stop immediately, otherwise its a cycle of violence. Reporter earlier in the day several european foreign ministers taken to see the site of a hamas rocket attack. Their visit not just as friends of israel, but adding to the Drum Beat for durable peace. Into the night, not yet clear if the ceasefire that came into effect at 2 00 a. M. Local can actually hold. Nic robertson, cnn, ashdod, israel. And Journalist Elliott Gotkine is in ashdod, israel, this hour. So, elliott, another ceasefire. The question, though, what now . To at least try not to be back here in a few years all over again. Reporter quite, michael. I mean, there are, as we have seen, you know, the diplomatic efforts that we saw over the past few days. Once the dust has settled now and this ceasefire has held and is certainly holding up until this point there will be perhaps more attempts to try to do something to avoid this cycle whereby every few years there is another flare up, another round of fighting between israel and the hamas Militant Group in the Gaza Strip to the detriment both of israelis and of course as we have seen to the detriment of the people of gaza as well. How much any such overtures will succeed will in a large part depend on the energy and diplomatic capital that u. S. President Joe Biden wants to spend on this. He of course has firsthand knowledge of this, not just as a Vice President under the Obama Administration when there were some talks between israelis and palestinians that went nowhere, but also in his role as a senator with a very, very involved in international relations. He himself has long described himself as a zionist, as a friend of prime Minister Netanyahus even though he doesnt often agree with him. Certainly really for some progress to be made would require the u. S. , but as weve seen this time around the help of the egyptians as well, because the u. S. Dont have at least publicly a direct line with hamas, which it views as a terrorist organization, and for progress to be made one would imagine there would need to be perhaps good will gestures to begin with before any kind of talks could take place. Getting the israelis and hamas in the Gaza Strip to talk seems like a nonstarter certainly right now. Exactly. The problem is there isnt a, quote unquote, Peace Process anymore. Theres nothing to work with. Israeli politics have moved sharply to the right, hamas still in control in gaza, the Palestinian Authority is pretty weak in terms of leadership, The Oslo Agreement is pretty much gone. Where do we start not to mention where is the will . Reporter thats right, michael. When we see flareups of Violence And Fighting between israel and hamas in the Gaza Strip although we hear from the u. N. Secretary general saying there really needs to be more talk, serious dialogue to address the root causes of the conflict in his words, what many israeli politicians and many israelis see, look, israel got out of the Gaza Strip more than 15 years ago and this is what has happened. Imagine if we got out completely of the West Bank, it would be even more threatening to israel and its safety and security. So if anything when we see these rounds of fighting it doesnt necessarily convince people that something needs to be done to resolve this once and for all, it convinces them the Status Quo Ante where we have seen effectively no progress whatsoever in the Peace Process between israel and the palestinians over the past year, it convinces certainly politicians and many israelis that that is the best way, the best that can be hoped for and that some kind of ceasefire which will inevitably ultimately lead to more rounds of fighting in future is really all that they can hope for. That Status Quo endures. The palestinians dont want it, but what to do, as you say. Elliott gotkine in ashdod, israel. Appreciate t thanks so much. I did speak earlier with cnn political Commentator And Editor at large of jewish currents Peter Binart. Asked him what does lie ahead for the people of gaza and the West Bank for that matter now that this latest Military Showdown with israel appears to be over. United nations says that gaza is unlivable for human beings. Its 2 Million people under a blockade who are basically in a kind of an open air prison. They cant move, their Goods Cant go in in and out very easily, there is not enough water, there is not enough electricity. Other palestinians in the West Bank live under military occupation, they are not citizens of the country that controls their lives. They just dont have basic rights like Due Process and the right to vote for the government that controls their lives. Under those circumstances you dont have real peace. You may have calm for a while, but its just a matter of time until we have another one of these terrible explosions unless you deal with the basic issue which is millions of people are denied basic freedoms. The original goal, its worth talking about gaza, the original goal of the israeli economic blockade on gaza is to cripple hamas after it took over the strip in 2007. That Blockade Israeli Control as you say of what comes in and what leaves has hurt gaza civilians immeasurably but has it weakened hamas, which was the declared aim . No. Blockades are very good at punishing civilian populations, they are not very good at removing governments. We as americans have been blockading cuba since the 1960s, the Castro Family is still in charge there but weve hurt the cuban people. No, ironically, its probably strengthened hamas because its basically destroyed the independent Business Class that could have been a rival Business Center and allow them to completely take control of the economy. Its fundamentally just immoral to punish an entire population because the people who are on the ground Running Gaza are people who israel has a problem with. And, you know, israel has legitimate reasons for having problems with hamas, but this is both an ineffective and immoral strategy for responding to hamas, as many of israels own Security Officials have actually acknowledged. Cnn political commentator Peter Binart there. U. S. Health officials say the nation may finally be turning the corner in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. The sevenday average of daily new covid cases just dropped below 30,000 for the first time, wait for it, in nearly a year. Deaths are also declining, but Vaccination Rates have been slowing nationwide and even though more than 48 of the u. S. Population has received at least one dose, some groups are getting vaccinated at high rates than others. Cnns Erica Hill takes a look. Reporter the push is on. A high School Gym now a Vaccination Site. Just to see my grandparents again. Its been a long time. Reporter shots in arms at the richmond raceway. I cant even believe T I Cant wait to go to a musical festival. Reporter while On Minneapolis they are on the move, to meet people where they are. I want to make sure that our community is aware of the things that are available to them so that they could, you know, feel safe. Reporter just 22 of Black Americans have gotten the shot according to a new analysis of cdc data, compared with 29 of hispanics and a third of white americans. Native and asianamericans have the highest Vaccination Rates. We have to continue vaccinating, the more we vaccinate people the better its going to be. Reporter at least half the adults in these 19 states and d. C. Are now fully vaccinated. Maine has fully vaccinated more than half of its total population, the first state to reach that milestone. Mississippi has the lowest record and is the Oenlt State to see a rise in average new cases over the past week. The longer that we are perpetuating cases and transmission the more likely we will need a booster. Reporter but a Booster Isnt a bad thing. When you get a booster you increase dramatically the level of antibodies that would be protective. Reporter meantime, new efforts to ban School Mask requirements in iowa and utah. Even for kids too young to get the vaccine. This as the American Academy Of Pediatrics recommends kids continue to mask up in public spaces until they can be vaccinated. If we wear a mask were going to just prevent that transmission. Its unclear to me sort of the rationale behind that decision. Reporter here in new York Masks are still required in schools. In the face of slowing Vaccination Rates in the state the governor announcing that next week New Yorkers who get their shot at a mass Vaccination Site will also get a 20 Lottery Ticket and they will be eligible to win one of five 1 Million prizes. This comes on the heels of what were seeing out of ohio where state officials say since they announced the vacs A Million program they have seen an increase in vaccinations of 28 from earlier in the month, in New York im Erica Hill. Prince william now lashing out at the bbc over its Bombshell Interview with his late mother back in 1995. Its the one you might remember where Princess Diana revealed her relationship with Prince Charles had pretty much broken down. Well, an independent inquiry found the Journalist Martin Brashear used deceitful methods to secure that interview and the bbc covered that up. Lets hear some of williams comments. It is welcome that the bbc accepts lord dysons findings in full which are extremely concerning. That bbc employees lied and used fake documents to obtain the interview with my mother. Made lure rid and false claims about the Royal Family which played on her fears and fueled paranoia. Displayed woeful incompetence when investigating complaints and concerns about the program, and were evasive in their reporting to the media and covered up what they knew from their internal investigation. It is my view that the deceitful way the interview was obtained substantially influenced what my mother said. The interview was a major contribution to making my Parents Relationship worse and has since hurt countless others. It brings indescribable sadness to know that the Bbcs Failure contributed significantly to her fear, Paranoia And Isolation that i remember from those final years with her. Cnns Scott Mclean is Rightout Side the Bbc Headquarters In London for us. Harsh criticism of the bbc and how it handled this. Tell us more about the fallout from this report. Reporter michael, keep in mind that this interview is undoubtedly one of the most famous interviews in british broadcasting history. Prince Sendai Anna revealing some serious cracks in her marriage to Prince Charles, also an interview that did not reflect well on the Royal Family at all. Just to jog your memory, here is the most famous exchange. Do you think mrs. Parker bowles was a factor in the breakdown of your marriage . Well, there were three of us in this marriage so it was a bit crowded. Camilla Parker Bowles now the duchess of cornwall of course, the wife of Prince Charles The Future king. Now, this independent inquiry, this independent report which was done by a judge comes 25 years after that interview aired, more than 25 years, and it found that the journalist who conducted the interview Martin Brashear had used fake Bank Statements reporting to show that the british intelligence services and the media were paying members of Princess Dianas Inner Circle to spy on her. None of that was true, the Bank Statements were completely bogus, but they succeeded in convincing Princess Dianas brother Earl Spencer to have his trust and to make the introduction between Martin Brashear and Princess Diana which ultimately led to that interview. This report also found that the bbc covered up key facts that it knew or ought to have known about how that interview came to be. The Bbc Today accepting the findings of the report, the head of the bbc promising more personal apologies to the key players who were involved in it as well. And you heard Prince William obviously talking about how this interview greatly contributed to the fears, Paranoia And Isolation that he remembers his brother Prince Harry also releasing a separate statement which read in part our mother lost her life because of this, because of what he called a Culture Of Exploitation in the british press, and nothing has changed. By protecting her legacy we protect everyone and uphold the dignity with which she lived her life. Lets remember who she was and what she stood for. Now, last night it was actually the very same bbc program, panorama, that aired that interview back in 1995 that aired a brandnew expose on how the interview came to be and in it they interviewed Earl Spencer, dianas brother, who made some pretty striking statements. Here is one. Well, the irony is that i met Martin Brashear on the 31st of august, 1995, because exactly two years later she died. And i do draw a line between the two events. And the reason he makes that connection is because he says that the interview that diana was presented with and the interview itself really seemed to dissolve any trust that she had with the people around her and seemed to push her even further away from the bubble of the Royal Family, if you might call it that, and the protection that she might have had otherwise in the years that followed. I should also mention, michael, for Martin Brashears part he has apologized for ever having those Bank Statements mocked up but he also continues to insist that, quote, they had no bearing whatsoever on the personal choice by Princess Diana to take part in the interview. It is saddening that this single issue has been allowed to overshadow the Brynn Sess brave decision to tell her story. He points out the very first paragraph of this 127page investigative report which says that Princess Diana at that point in her life was pretty keen to do a Tv Interview and probably would have done it with any Television Reporter she found reputable and had earned her trust. Martin bashir resigned from his position at the bbc on monday citing ongoing health issues. Scott mclean In London. Outside Bbc Headquarters. Thanks, scott. Now, u. S. Now, newly released video shows a violent encounter in 2019 between a black motorist, his name was Ronald Greene, and Louisiana State police. Initial Police Reports said greene died in a Car Crash while being pursued by police, but the family soon suspected they were not getting the whole story. Well, now portions of video obtained by the Associated Press reveal that greene was, in fact, repeatedly tased and beaten by police and later died. Cnns Randi Kaye with our report. We caution you, the video is disturbing. Let me see your [ bleep ] mands, mother [ bleep ]. Come here, mother [ bleep ]. Reporter Ronald Greene is under arrest after taking police on a highspeed chase in monroe, louisiana. Watch watches next. Okay. Okay. Reporter the Officers Tase Greene while he is still sitting in his car. He apologizes and repeatedly tells officer hes scared as they try to force him out of the vehicle. Get out. Get out of the car. Okay. Okay. Im scared. Im sorry. Im scared. Im scared. Get out of the car. Im scared. Officer, im scared. Im your brother. Im scared. Reporter the Familys Attorney says greene apologized in an attempt to surrender. Its not only what youre seeing but the sounds that go with it. You can hear him screaming and writhing in pain as he says im your brother, please stop. Im sorry, i was just scared. Reporter The Incident happened two years ago, but this is newly obtained Body Cam Video by the Associated Press which says the entire video is 46 minutes long. Cnn has now reviewed the full video, so we do not know what happened before or in between the three clips the ap released. This Body Cam Video shows greene on the ground, being handcuffed. Hes face down, yet once again the officers tase him, punch him, even kick him. Hes left on the Ground Face down moaning in pain according to the Associated Press for more than nine minutes. While the officers use sanitizer wipes to get the blood off their hands and faces. Are you all right . The Guy He Got [ bleep ] aids. Reporter the ap says he was not given any aid during the nine minutes he was on the ground. At one point a Police Officer is seen stepping on greene, then roughly dragging greene by the shackles on his ankles as another officer watches. This Video Clip is silent so its unclear whats being said or why greene who is handcuffed on his stomach and in no position to resist is being dragged. The Body Cam Footage tells a very different story than how Louisiana State troopers first described The Incident in their 2019 report. Which said troopers tried to pull greene over for a Traffic Violation which ended when greene crashed his car. Another Police Report said greene was taken into custody after resisting arrest and a struggle with troopers and that he died on the way to the hospital. A wrongful Death Suit filed last year by Greenes Family says police told his family he had been killed in an Auto Accident and that one officer said he was killed immediately after hitting a tree. Authorities have refused to make the video public. These Postmortem Photos of greene released on the Naacp Baton Rouge Facebook Page show the extent of the injuries green suffered during The Incident. Abrasions on his skull and bruising across his cheeks. Ronald Greenes Mother told cnn in a statement they murdered him. That her son didnt have a chance. Randi kaye, cnn, palm beach county, florida. Now, Greenes Family still in shock of course over the brutality seen on that video. An attorney for the family called it murder. Greenes mother spoke with cnn earlier. Have a listen. Upon the release of this the other day i had to break away from it. I i had to stay focused. The anger that i have, the anxiety, its gripping, and i dont want to go through that. I have to stay focused because what these guys did to my son and the Cover Up that pursued and ensued behind all of that, its someone has to stay focused and my family will. They have to pay the penalties. Shame on all of you for the fact that the corruption and that you are allowed to continue to hide and just the fact that when we were there we were lied to in our faces, and they allowed us to continue to go our ways knowing that nothing was going to be done. That deceit, we already know what the State Troopers have done, but on all those above them, thats thats really painful. These are people who hold high office and its degrading. Shame on the state of louisiana. These are the people that youre proud of to hold office . Now, greenes death while in Police Custody is now being investigated by the u. S. Justice department, the fbi and the u. S. Attorneys office for the western district of louisiana. Once again, Video Footage has revealed a different account from what police initially describe, and as cnns Josh Campbell reports, the Ronald Greene case is the latest in a very long list. Reporter George Floyd, walter scott, Breonna Taylor, laquan mcdonald, just a few of the names of black people dying at the hands of Police Officers. Police whose initial narratives were found to be inaccurate once video surfaced telling the real story. The official Police Report documenting the arrest of George Floyd simply stated, officers were able to get the suspect into handcuffs and noted he appeared to be suffering medical distress. Officers called for an ambulance. No mention of floyd being handcuffed with a knee on his neck for over nine minutes. Walter scott pulled over by Police Officer Michael Slager for a broken taillight in South Carolina in 2015 was shot in the back five times. Slager initially claimed he shot scott because he feared for his life after scott grabbed his taser, but video showed Slager Shooting Him in the back interest 17 feet away according to prosecutors then dropping his taser by scotts body. What we see again time and time again are officers punishing black folks who run, who dont comply, who dont comply quick enough. Reporter Breonna Taylor a black emt was shot and killed by louisville Police Officers in march of last year during a botched raid on her apartment. The initial Police Report stated there were no injuries and no forced entry. Taylor was shot at least eight times and police used a Battering Ram to execute their no knock warrant. In Chicago 17yearold Laquan mcdonald was shot in 2014 when he walked away from police on a Side Street while holding a knife. Chicago Officer Jason Van dyke initially said mcdonald raised a knife at him, but at no point on the video that was released over a year later was mcdonald seen lifting the knife in the manner Van Dyke described. The length of time it took to release the tape the line in the initial reports by the officers, all these things, Thats Part of a Cover Up. Reporter without the emergence of Eyewitness Cellphone Video and the public release of Body Cam Footage these officers stories would remain the final word. Josh campbell, cnn, washington. Now, momentum has been building in the u. S. Congress to investigate that violent insurrection at the capitol but at The End of the day the effort still seems likely to get nowhere. Lactaid Ice Cream is the creamy, real Ice Cream you love that will never mess with your stomach. Lactaid Ice Cream. Welcome back. A push to set up a commission to investigate the insurrection at the u. S. Capitol appears to be headed for defeat in the senate. A violent mob Of Trump supporters stormed the capitol on January 6th, as im sure you will remember, just as lawmakers were certifying president Joe Bidens election victory. Well, on wednesday The House passed a bill to create the commission that would get to the bottom of exactly what happened there. That as Ryan Nobles now reports, senate republicans are poised to sink that effort. Reporter the bipartisan January 6th commission headed to the senate may already be dead on arrival. After careful consideration, ive made the decision to oppose The House democrats slanted and unbalanced proposal for another commission to study the events of january the 6th. Reporter in order to pass the senate the bill needs the support of ten republicans and Minority Leader Mitch Mcconnells opposition is having an impact. While several republicans say they are considering the bill, likely murkowski of alaska, Bill Cassidy of louisiana, Pat Toomey of pennsylvania, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Mitt Romney of utah, many more flatly saying they will vote no. In addition to mcconnell senators like Roy Blunt and Josh Hawley of missouri, Mike Rounds who once said he was open to the commission and Ron Johnson of wisconsin now in the no column and Richard Burr who voted to impeach former President Trump just added his name to the no list. But listen to mcconnell back in january. The mob was fed lies. They were provoked by the president and other powerful people. Reporter he also promised, quote, a painstaking investigation and a thorough review must now take place and significant changes must follow. Tracking with house Minority Leader Kevin Mccarthys change of heart, their one goal now, put the insurrection behind them and focus on winning in 2022. Im looking forward to being speaker in the next congress. Reporter and now that theres almost no chance of a commission, mccarthy boldly says he would have no problem testifying. Would you be willing to testify about your conversation with Donald Trump on January 6th if you were asked by an outside commission . Sure. You would . Next question. Reporter and even though the bill already left The House democrats are keeping up the pressure on republicans who voted no . Either they are pretending to ignore whats happening or they are living in a world of delusion. Reporter democrats like Tim Ryan of ohio accusing the gop of white washing the severity of the Insurrection And House Speaker Nancy Pelosi warning that even if the senate turns the measure down there will still be options to investigate the insurrection. Lets just give them a chance to do that without hanging something over them about a timetable or other options that exist for the speaker of The House. Reporter and republicans are already signaling that they are going to block this measure before it even gets the opportunity to be debated on the senate floor, readying a Filibuster Move to block debate on this bill. This despite the fact that there are some republicans who are open to voting for the legislation if just some minor changes are made. That of course would require negotiation between democrats and republicans to make the bill better. At this point those talks dont appear to be planned. Ryan nobles, cnn, on capitol hill. Sources say Allen Weisselberg is facing a criminal Tax Investigation as well as a probe of his role in the Trump Organization, and it could raise the legal stakes for the former president and his family. Reporter well, michael, this meeting is going to consist of a lot of speeches, including one from chinese president xi jinping. At The End of the day they are hoping to sign a Rome Declaration of principles which we will talk about how to avoid future global health pandemics. Now, michael, there are a lot of expectations going into this summit that they not just talk about future pandemics, but that they provide some action for the current pandemic which is still going on, particularly in underdeveloped countries. I mean, this meeting is happening at The End of a week in which we have heard from kenya that they are shortly running out of vaccines from the Executive Director of unicef which heads the Covax Program of distributing those vaccines in underdeveloped countries that says richer countries need to help out poorer countries now. Amnesty international saying time is of the essence in places like south america, South Asia and africa. And what these groups are looking for, michael, from this summit are three things in particular, one is money, the act accelerated program for the World Health Organization is short of 18. 5 billion just this year and then of course we will also need funding going into other years, as well as Vaccine Sharing between countries, the u. S. And france have already signed on to that, but they need other countries to sign on to that as well, and a waiver for Intellectual Property Rights in getting the pharmaceutical companies to share their Knowledge And Technology with underdeveloped countries. So those are some of the concrete steps that people who are watching this summit are really hopes to hear from these g 20 countries today, michael. We will have to wait and see if they can step up to those plans. Michael . All right. Delia, thanks. Delia gallagher there in rome for us.
