Democrats this morning sending a very clear message. My senate republican colleagues must now ask themselves are they going to join us in pursuing the truth . Or are they going to cover for Donald Trump and his Big Lie . To my republican friends and i do have them, take back your party. Lets get straight up to Capitol Hill and cnns lauren fox. Describe the fate of this bill in the senate. Is it on Life Support . Is it dead on arrival . Do we know . Reporter well, at this point it sounds like it is either dead or is going to be dead very soon. Youre hearing that from not just republicans who dont want to support this legislation but also from some democrats who are very concerned about where this commission could be headed, which is troubling for a lot of lawmakers, because they want to go back and get a sense at exactly what happened on January 6th so they feel they can protect themselves up here on Capitol Hill when it comes to security. Now, i asked one republican, senator dig shelby, about whether this bill was actually dead. This is what he told me this morning. Quote, if its not dead, its been slow walked and it is short of breath, john. I think that gives you a very good glimpse as to where all of this is headed. Now, one of the chief argument youve heard from republicans including mcconnell is the fact that there are already investigations under way both by the department of Justice And Right here on Capitol Hill. We expect that in a few weeks we are going to see a bipartisan report from the Homeland Committee and the rules committee, a bipartisan report that senators have been working on for several months together about what exactly transpired. And thats why you have some republicans saying it is just not necessary. You also have some republicans arguing that this bill is too political in nature. Of course it is structured very similarly to how the 9 11 commission was structured. I think that Talking Point is really something where republicans dont want this to continually be in the spotlight as they are trying to take back the senate and the house in 2022. John . I believe as i always have this is the appropriate course. I dont believe establishing a new commission is necessary or wise. There you have it. The math is simply not there. I thought Speaker Pelosi was interesting today. She could have immediately got after the republicans and she said lets give it a chance. See if they read it. See if they change their minds. That from Senator Burr tells you this is most likely dead. And here is the point. They say yes these committees are looking into it. Are any of these committees going to ask to hear from Donald Trump, from the House Minority Leader mccarthy who spoke to then President Trump that day who President Trump allegedly said nice things about the rioters . So they prefer the white wash. Exactly. And i think with senator shelbys quote earlier saying the prospects were short of breath i think Richard Burr sort of punched it in the gut and killed it all together because think of the gravitas he would have brought to this if he had supported a January 6th commission. They led the bipartisan Russia Investigation as chairman of the intelligence committee, voted to convict trump in his second impeachment trial. He is also retiring so he doesnt have political considerations. The fact he came out moments ago against the commission means a lot of senate republicans will be opposing. Lets listen. She spent four months just playing politics with it. In that time period an officer got killed on good friday just across from this capitol. She didnt want to have the scope to do that as well. Well have four things happening right now. You have two committees in the senate already doing their investigation. I believe in two weeks theyll already have their report back even though pelosi wasted all this time. You got the Architect Of The Capitol given 10 Million to study what we need done here to protect it. Then you have the justice department, rightfully, does a much better job than we could ever do already arrested 445 people. Probably another hundred coming. Thats the type of work we want to make sure is done that it never happens again, that those who participated and caused it should be held accountable, and that we secure this capitol and we dont play politics with it. I just think a Pelosi Commission is a lot of politics. What language limits the scope of the commission . It says Influencing Factors. No. Relevant. That would be, you know, Influencing Factors i have a difference of opinion than our legal counsel does, too. I gave language to Speaker Pelosi. I sent her two different letters. She never would communicate at all in that process. I think the scope needs to be expanded. If you look at the 9 11 commission we looked at what happened and what the build up for that was. That would be important here as well. Do you think it is a Conflict Of Interest for members to vote on a commission they might be potentially witnesses for and provide information on . No. Because who knows what they are going to do on the commission . I dont think so. Are you absolutely certain none of your members were in communication with any people who stormed Capitol Hill . The member did so. The democrats conceded a lot in those negotiations which is why 35 house Republicans Yesterday voted for it because they had the courage to say this was done in good faith. January 6th was abhorrent. We should have an independent commission. Manu raju asked leader mccarthy at the Press Conference would you testify. His answer was, next question. Again, all you need to know about the current leader of House Republicans and those who follow him. That is the issue. He spoke to then President Trump that day in the middle of it when they wanted help. Right now the congressional Committees God bless their work about securing the capitol, about what they know happened that day. It is very important. But they are not dealing with the question of did the president say no when people were asking to authorize the national guard . What did he tell leader mccarthy . Hillary Clinton Leader mccarthy testified to one of the benghazi hearings. Why dont you have the same courage . Speak up and say lets make this go away. I will testify. Not going to happen. Because he is afraid of angering Donald Trump, drawing his ire. He wants Donald Trumps backing for his future political plans if he is to be speaker of the house going forward hell need that. They want Donald Trumps Fundraising Prowess and megaphone and backing. They are clearly trying to reframe this as the Pelosi Commission, i dont know how it would be the Pelosi Commission with five people appointed by republicans and five people appointed by democrats. Kevin mccarthy himself could appoint i think two people and have a say into who is the Vice Chairman of this. As you said pelosi gave in everything that they essentially asked for. And even with the scope they could broaden the scope. If there was actual reason to do it. Likely there isnt much reason to do it because this was a singular event in american history and that would be the focus. With someone like Kevin Mccarthy and Donald Trump likely being called as witnesses. They fear the truth for two reasons. Number one it would make Donald Trump mad. Right. But thats how they think. It would make Donald Trump mad. We cant have that. Number two, if Donald Trump is mad they think it blocks their path to power in the 2022 midterms because of all the Distance And Chaos in the republican party. They dont take the house and the senate. The proof of that is here. First leader mccarthy. Remember he had tough words about President Trump right after the insurrection. Then he went to maralago and he changed his tune and his story. So did Mitch Mcconnell who now will control the fate of this commission. Listen . There is no question, none. That President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the event of the day. Ive made the decision to oppose the House Democrats slanted and unbalanced proposal for another commission to study the events of January 6th. If i could continue the sentence these are my words not his because i want to be Majority Leader again. Thats kind of the through Line Weve seen through all of the republican battles over the past several weeks that unity is what they want ahead of the 2022 midterms both in the house and senate. We also have to kind of step back and examine this for history purposes. She really could have come out and blasted republicans especially in the senate for rejecting this outright but she is trying to kind of give show as bipartisan show that she can be as bipartisan as possible even kind of being open to addressing one of the complaints. From some republicans saying, well maybe we will add more republican staff for example. She is trying to give them all the reasons to not say no. She spoke in those days, i remember, it was hard to get the 9 11 commission. Democrats and republicans had concerns about the commission at the beginning but she talked about the victims and the families of the victims who came forward and created this political environment where you could not say no. She is clearly hoping, i think the numbers are stacked against it, but is hoping there is some creation of that. Maine, percentage of adults fully vaccinated, maine is 61 . Mississippi is the bottom of the pack at 34 . This is the percent of the entire population who are fully vaccinated. As we go through Spring And Summer and into fall and it gets colder when coronavirus comes back a little bit will we see states with high Vaccination Rate with a low Case Count and maybe spikes and surges in some of these states that are lagging . I anticipate we will continue to see those Numbers Decrease, the case Numbers Decrease over the coming weeks. By summer they should be quite low. By fall we should be at a new normal but the new normal is going to mean well still have to think about the risk of cases and clusters in nursing homes, prisons, homeless shelters, communities that dont have large Vaccination Rates or high Vaccination Rates and in those situations it is really important we respond quickly. Covid is going to be with us for the foreseeable future and well have to stay careful. We can do more things we have so missed doing for the past year, nearly year and a half. Amen to that. As you mentioned, it is very important. We can look at national numbers. This is different state by state. Sometimes it is different within states. Different parts of states as you Go County By county. Right now at every key Moment Youve had political leaders making restrictions. Ramp up or dial back restrictions . In texas and iowa the governors, there are new policies in place mandating, and in utah this is in the legislature. But in texas and iowa it is now policy that a local School District or a local government, the governors have mandated no longer can you institute a Mask Mandate. Is that smart Public Policy . Should you on a statewide level be telling counties, mayors, School Districts no more masks . No. Its a mistake to be perfectly blunt. The fact is, masks are highly effective at preventing the spread of covid. The main freedom that a mask inhibits is the freedom of the virus to spread to people and make them very sick or kill them. Now, the good news that we have fewer cases and more vaccines means that masks are less and less necessary in certain circumstances. But you really have to ask who you are, where you are, and what youre doing. So if youre immuno compromised you may need to think about wearing a mask. Even if the general Population Isnt even if youve been immunized if theres still covid spreading in your community and youre indoors in an environment that may create a risk, where you are, are you in a place where covid is spreading . And if Flu Season comes and you dont want to get the flu maybe you want to wear a mask then in crowded, indoor, poorly ventilated spaces. And things like choir and shouting in Aerobics Classes and poorly ventilated indoor spaces increase the risk. She has indicated previously she would step aside after The End of this congress but it is still not clear at all about what she would do. We spoke to a number of confidantes, allies, people in california and In Washington and it is very clear she is keeping her decision very close to her desk. There are rumors that she perhaps could step aside this congress, may not serve out her term. Her allies or confidantes completely reject that possibility saying she is raising just a stunning amount of money to try to keep the democrats majority in the house right now which is imperiled and believing if she were to step aside too soon it could hurt that effort. Also there are questions about whether she will run for reelection again. Right now she is clearly keeping that option open. Her campaign is raising a fun of money for that as well. If she does run for reelection will she try to retain the Speakers Gavel if the democrats keep the majority in the new congress . That is still an open question even though she has signaled she would step aside after this term. Part of it is she does not want to be seen as a lame duck. She wants to make clear some options here are open but also the way she strategizes and plays which is keeping her cards very close to her vest. There are also people watching because their own careers could be affected directly. First on Capitol Hill what will happen at the top democratic job . There is wide Speculation Hakeem jeffries would be the likely Heir Apparent right now a member of democratic leadership. There are two others ahead of him Steny Hoyer and Jim Clyburn but they are older and speculation is they may go away. I talked to all of them and none would say. And what will happen to her House Seat . Her daughter Christine Pelosi seen as a possibility to run for that seat as well and she also would not we reached out to her and didnt hear back. At the same time as manu pointed out she has been in charge for 18 years and i think one of the ongoing Story Lines in the democratic party that has existed under her leadership is the younger generation of House Democrats who have had to look for jobs elsewhere because they were kind of blocked out of leadership. And history has shown that the incumbent president typically loses something like two dozen seats. So theyve got a real big task ahead of them. I think that is the main question. Because you cant imagine her giving up the Speakers Gavel and sort of remaining in the house just as the leader of the caucus. Well see.
