A very good morning to viewers here in the united states and around the world. Its thursday, may 20th. There are disturbing new revelations about the death Of A Black Man in Police Custody two years ago. A lawyer for the family of Ronald Green says they were initially told that he crashed his car while being pursued by Louisiana State troopers in 2019. Now Body Camera Footage has emerged and shows green being tased, kicked and dragged by the officers before his death. The case is now the subject of a federal civil rights investigation. Ryan young joins us live now to explain exactly the timeline of what happened and what we were told about what happened, ryan. Lets also not forget this video was leaked. It was not officially released. So weve never seen the full tape so far. And if you think about it, the family has been in limbo the last two years. Im scared reporter Terrifying Pleas from Ronald Green after a highspeed chase led to a deadly confrontation with Louisiana State police just outside the city Of Monroe in may of 2019. Get out here reporter in Body Camera video, troopers can be seen repeatedly punching green after dragging him out of his vehicle. Taser taser taser. Reporter troopers tased green multiple times while hes face down on the ground as they attempt to handcuff him. Another trooper can be seen kicking green. The Associated Press released three segments of the original video which it says is 40 seconds long. Only two of the Video Clips have audio. Cnn has neither reviewed nor obtained the original video and its unclear what occurred before or in between the Video Clips. The video is being seen by the public for the first time. But the incident took place two years ago. The Body Cam Footage is shocking considering the way the encounter was described in the Louisiana Police initial State Report in 2019 which says troopers attempted to pull green over for unspecified Traffic Violation that ended when green crashed his vehicle. The report also says, quote, green was taken into custody after resisting arrest and has struggled with troopers. Green died on the way to the hospital, the report said. At no time on the video can troopers be seen trying to render any medical aid to greene who according to the Associated Press was face down and moaning for more than nine minutes. Cnn reached out to the attorneys for the officers for comment. Lee merit is an attorney for the Greene Family and spoke to cnn. Its not only what youre seeing but the sounds that go with it. You can hear him screaming and writhing in pain. As he says, im your brother. Please stop. Im sorry. I was just scared. Reporter the Department Of Justice is investigating the incident and in a statement to cnn, the Louisiana State police says the premature public release of investigative files and Video Evidence in this case was not authorized and was not obtained through official sources. Lsp is confident in the judicial system and fair review of this incident and continues to offer our full cooperation. Unauthorized release of evidence undermines the investigative process and compromised the fair and impartial outcome for the Greene Family. Lsp employees and the community. They are unable to provide any further information at this time. Greenes mother tells nbc she thinks the Louisiana State police murdered her son. They beat him. With the purpose of letting him just die. John, when you think about this, its so difficult watching this video over and over. One of the things about it, greene was left pretty much face down. And we know from watching the George Floyd Case that officers should flip people over so that the person can, obviously, be able to breathe. That did not happen in this case. Lee merit is hoping more of this video would come out so the public can see what actually happened. Ryan young, thank you. Joining us is detroit interim Police Chief and former Philadelphia Police commissioner charles ramsey. Chief craig, let me ask you this. Two issues here. One, the treatment that Ronald Greene experienced there, but number two, what the police said about what happened. The fact that they said there was a struggle, but they certainly didnt say tased. They didnt say there was blood flying everywhere so much that they commented on it and then merely said he died in the car afterwards, as if it just miraculously happened in a vacuum. The omission of the details seems glaring, yes . Absolutely, john. This is deeply troubling and my prayer goes out to the Greene Family. But you point out the two big issues. One, we know just looking at the video, this was an example of what defines excessive use of force. And then on top of that, the inaccurate report and on top of that, they indicate the officer was at some point suspended. He returned to work. So whats the status of the internal investigation . Lets face it. This is yet another big setback for our profession. You know, were in a crisis right now, and this does nothing. And then the fact that there are statements being made about premature release of this information, i guess these folks havent been paying attention on whats going on around the country. This is about maintaining public trust and youre not going to maintain public trust when you withhold significant information so this is bad. And here we are, yet another incident. It is hard, commissioner ramsey, to look at this Louisiana State Police Statement where theyre emphasizing this is an unauthorized release. You know, in a way its like, thank god that we can see something here which is the contrast between the truth and what is represented by the police in the report in this case. We saw this in the case of George Floyd. That Police Report did not describe what happened to George Floyd at all 7. Yeah, theres no question about it. First of all, apparently the officials down in louisiana are completely out of touch. I couldnt agree more with Chief Craig on that issue. But there are a lot of troubling parts of this. The tasing of the individual for an extended period of time. The fact that he was laying in a prone position face down for such an extended period of time and you can see from that, even though there was no extra Body Weight applied to him during the majority of that period of time, its still very hard to breathe when youre laying on your chest with your arms behind your back. And you couple that with the fact that his Heart Rate was probably elevated and he was excited Because of all the things going on that clearly is something that should not have happened. He tried to roll over at one point and one of the troopers actually prevented him from rolling over. And then the dragging later in the tape you can see one trooper actually dragging him by his ankles. This is, without question, excessive force. My understanding is the ruling of the medical examiner was accidental but she was not told that there was that kind of physical contact with police. So this is a very troubling case on a lot of different levels. And that tape should have been released a long time ago and kind of reminds me about the with the laquan mcdonald. The length of time it took to release the tape. The lying in the initial reports by the officers. All these things, Thats Part of a coverup. Its no more complicated than that. Again, what we see and what they said just dont line up, Chief Craig. And this again puts a spotlight on the issue in terms of reporting among other things. And i think public belief after incidents like this about just taking at Face Value when police say, dot, dot, dot. Well, if police say in the case of Ronald Greene, he just happened to die in the car afterwards but they dont tell us about everything that happened before that, how can we be just believing blindly what police say . Well, we certainly dont want to paint an entire profession with a broad brush. This happened in detroit and this was this type of coverup, that Police Officer would not be employed. Regardless of what happens with any potential criminal charges. And i agree with chuck. There are a lot of issues here, and while it was ruled an accidental death, whats mindboggling for me, this man was dragged. There had to be contusions. He was beaten, choked. Did the medical examiner take those issues into account or was she just blind to the fact that, you know, this was all as a result of an accident . Its difficult. Coverup runs deep. Thats my two cents. You look at that video, the disregard for Human Life here is just indisputable. Chief craig, commissioner ramsey, thanks to both of you. Thank you so much. 35 house republicans voted against whitewashing the insurrection. Next, how many gop senators will say yes to a Commission Investigation . The house approved a commission to investigate the January 6th capitol attack. A vote in the senate could come as soon as next week. 35 house republicans joined the Yeas Rebuking Leader kevin mccarthy. Mccarthy worked hard. He was working the phones behind the scenes against this bill. 175 republicans voted against the commission. Now getting republican senators to buck leadership and join democrats in the senate might be impossible Because Mitch Mcconnell has come out and said he is a no vote. Joining us now, senior political analyst John Avlon with where things stand in the senate. Lets start with the guys we think i guess the ones who stated they are definitely no. Even though we know its much more than just these guys. Yeah, look. The folks who said they are definitely no, mcconnell is the key bellwether, of course. Its still significant to see some folks go against what they have said recently. For example, Mike Rounds. Just the other day Mike Rounds of South Dakota said its clear there was an insurrection. Were not going to sweep this under the rug. Now hes holding up a corner of the rug and has a broom in the other hand. Mcconnell is motivated by pure politics. Could this impact the 2022 midterms negatively . Thats whats driving this. Hes going to be using all his power to reinforce mccarthys message. A lot of folks have been swayed. Its still a jump ball move. Mcconnell was, yeah, im looking at it. Rounds was a probably. Now theyre definite nos. Who are the ones likely yeses . Some of the usual suspects here. A lot of the folks who voted to impeach and convict president trump. Murkowski, cassidy, mitt romney. Theres a south Carolina Windsock factor here. I wouldnt put too much stock into it. And then the ones who have said they are concerned about it. Yes, and look, weve got a caveat that this is still a Jump Ball Moment that, you know, we havent been able to talk to all the senators but the House Leadership and mcconnell really weighed in and said, look, dont vote for this. Its bad for us politically. They made the case it was duplicative and also made a lot of arguments refuted by John Katko, the republican of New York who coauthored the bill and blistered and directly addressed these. Among the concerns that put people like Susan Collins on the real Question List is this. Will there be the power for the republican deputy, you know, in effect on the commission, which is split 55 to hire staff. Katko says yes. Its all in consultation together. The republican leadership is saying, thats not a factor. So some of these may be addressable questions either by real facts, rather than partisan spin, or by adjusting the bill accordingly. This is where youll see, can they get to ten . If they dont, the reason that matters is, will this be the first filibuster of this era . Will republicans try to filibuster a bipartisan investigation into January 6th . Thats a real mark. Yes, if you are holding out hope for Rick Scott or Chuck Grassley here i wouldnt hold your breath. You havent been listening to what they are saying. Talk to me about greg pence, a congressman from indiana, the brother of the former Vice President. The one that they wanted to hang during the insurrection. Yeah. This is kind of everything you need to know about the State Of Play right now. His brother was had an angry mob shouting to hang him and he said, you know, lets vote against this independent bipartisan commission. He said Nancy Pelosi is acting like a Hanging Judge getting ahead of the law. This is not just something as cowardly and destructive and divisive as party over country. This case, its party over family and that shows you how twisted the mindset is right now. Take my brother, please, says congressman greg pence. Thanks so much, john. My goodness. I want to bring in democratic congresswoman jackie speer. She serves on the house armed services committee. Thanks for being with us. You know the signs right now in the senate, not so good when it comes to getting a commission moved forward for congress here. This would be a commission, to be clear, that is not made up of members of congress but outside folks and split even between democrats and republicans picking those people. Yesterday House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told cnn that if that doesnt happen, hes backing A Houseonly effort. He said were going to pursue this one way or the other. Do you support that . I support getting to the truth. And we have got to be clear eyed about this. This was an insurrection. This was a bloody, deadly siege on the u. S. Capitol. Our democracy was hanging on a thread. And to somehow call it a Capitol Tour when 140 Police Officers were injured, 81 of the capitol police, one lost his eye, one lost his finger, one is dead today, one committed suicide. One had a heart attack. I mean, this is not something that can be swept under the rug. Now be careful what they wish for in the senate. I would love to have Majority Leader schumer actually have this go to a fullfledged filibuster. Lets talk about what went on. I think the american people have to be reminded that we were so vulnerable that there could have been, literally, a coup. I was in that gallery. I was fearing for my life. And for anyone to somehow suggest that this was, you know, just some accidental happening or that people were being fair. Boggles my mind and should boggle the american peoples mind. Youre saying you want to get to the truth. Im taking that and correct me if im wrong, but im taking that to mean that if there is no bipartisan, bicameral commission then youre looking at A House select committee. Were talking about two incredibly different things here. The one right now pushed forward, written by a republican congressman, congressman katko, is, you know, this is, by all appearances, kind of not nonpartisan, right . Or its very equal in terms of the removal with the folks who would be on the commission from congress. This is something that would be like the 9 11 commission. The other thing were talking about is members of congress, maybe probably more democrats than republicans. It would be seen as political. And its hard to see how you actually keep it nonpolitical. So how is that really what the american people deserve . Well, you know, more importantly, they deserve the truth. And to somehow suggest that theres not going to be truth coming out of a select committee created in the house, dont forget the republicans had over 33 benghazi hearings and this was not in our country. This was, you know, in benghazi. We have domestic terrorism in this country right now. We have got to get to the bottom of it. Weve got to find out where it starts, where they are coalescing, and how do we prevent this kind of activity. Were concerned about terrorism around the world. Weve got it right here. So if theres a president ial commission created, i am for that, too. But were not going to play politics with the fact that people have lost their lives. Law enforcement officers lost their lives and there was almost a mass killing in the capitol on January 6th. Congresswoman if you could stay with us. We have other news that i want to get your take on. Im going to send it to john. New overnight, cnn was the first to report that the new York Attorney Generals Office has opened a criminal Tax Investigation into the Trump Organizations Chief Financial Officer allen weisselberg. Now people familiar with the investigation say it was opened a few months ago by the new York Attorney general. It comes just after the new York Attorney general announced that that office is joining the manhattan district Attorneys Office in a criminal probe into the Trump Organization. Joining us now, cnn senior legal analyst elie honig. Allen weisselberg, here he is. Explain us to exactly who he is, where he fits in Trump World and what theyre now investigating surrounding him. If prosecutors manage to flip allen weisselberg, and they certainly are trying now, he could hold the keys to the kingdom. This is a financial case. Hes the longtime Chief Financial Officer of the Trump Organization. And let me show you why thats so important. For all the gilded towers and trump towers, at its heart, the Trump Organization is a small familyrun operation. We know who the key players are. Donald trump, of course, the owner. His sons don junior and eric are executive Vice President s, ivanka trump, his daughter, was an Executive Vp before she went to work for the White House. The one person who is not a trump is allen weisselberg. Hes the Chief Financial Officer, hes been there for decades. So if they flip him, he can really break this case open. And especially important when we look at what are the potential allegations here . The core of the investigation that were seeing relate to finances. Did the Trump Organization falsely inflate or deflate the value of some of their Real Estate holdings, including these four that we see on the board. The theory is, when they applied for a bank loan, they would inflate the value to get bigger bank loans. And when it came tax time, theyd deflate the value so you pay less tax. Think about how allen weisselberg, if he flipped, could blow the lid off that. What are they looking at specifically in terms of weisselberg. Theyre closing in on him or investigating we dont know how close they are to anything. Theyre investigating him for tax reasons. When you are a prosecutor and want to flip somebody, youll need leverage. Allen weisselberg is not going to flip out of the goodness of his heart. What they are trying to get is a tax chart. The idea he was paid income by the Trump Organization but disguised to pay tuition for his children. He should have to pay taxes on that. Cy vance is the Manhattan Da on this case since 2018. It started with the hush money payments. Now its expanded. Letishia james, the state Attorney General announced she is joining the criminal piece of this investigation so they are joining forces and bringing even more resources to bear. Prosecutors know more than we do but we know some important things. Michael cohen has been talking to these prosecutors many, many times. We know that Because he likes to tell the public about it. Hes been in many times to speak with the da and the ag. You dont bring in someone as many times as theyve brought in Michael Cohen unless you plan to bank on them. But you also need corroboration to anything Michael Cohen says. Yes you certainly do. They deposed eric trump. I assume theyre seeing whether his Testimony Lines up with other things. The Tax Returns. We talk about corroboration. Prosecutors fought all the way to the supreme court. They have trumps Tax Returns now. Measure those against Michael Cohens testimony. Based on what we know about what they are looking at with weisselberg, do you think it would be enough to get him to flip . Tax charges in new York State can be from a misdemeanor Up To 25 years, which, if they can get the numbers up there, that could cause someone to flip. Elie honig, thank you p. Lets talk to Congresswoman Jackie Speier about this. The new York Ag joining in the investigation of the trump org. I think its quite serious. Not only can the Trump Organization be held criminally liable with heavy financial repercussions to that, but they could pierce the corporate veil which is a legal term and show that this was really trump who was pulling all the strings. Allen weisselberg, i was always surprised that the president did not pardon allen weisselberg. And that could be reason enough for him to want to flip. Michael cohen found out the hard way that Donald Trump was not his buddy. And i think he also made it very clear that there was a lot of abuse going on. All you have to do is look at Donald Trumps track record. The foundation. Trump university. Theyre all frauds. And if, in fact, they establish tax fraud, theres no statute of limitations on that. So this is serious. And it should be serious. Separately, i want to ask you about a move by the biden administration, which has done something that actually russia loves. They are waiving sanctions against the russianowned company that is building a russia to germany natural gas pipeline, and they are foregoing sanctions against that companys ceo. This is a decision that was made with u. S. german relations in mind, not u. S. russian relations, but its certainly a victory for Vladimir Putin. What do you say to this . Well, i think, as you point out, its more about germany than it is about russia. They need the energy. And this is probably a Negotiating Tool that the president is using to make sure that germany is continues to be part of the eu, continues to be both a neighbor and ally. But theres many other people that can be sanctioned within the russian sphere. I hope we continue to hold them accountable Because their behavior has been truly painful. And the recent Pipeline Incident that appears to be coming from russian insiders would suggest that i dont believe that anything goes on in russia without putins fingerprints all over it. So whether these were Third Party actors or not, they had to have had the blessings of Vladimir Putin. You believe they did . You believe that Vladimir Putin ultimately is behind the colonial Pipeline Hacking . I believe that nothing happens in russia without his approval. And if it does happen and hes unpleased with it, there are ramifications. You get poisoned, among others. Congresswoman jackie speier, thank you. Next, you probably remember that guy who pointed a rifle at protesters walking by his house. Well he is now facing felony charges. And the gop thinks hed make a good senator. Plus, the congressman who compared Capitol Rioters to tourists. A picture that proves he should know better. Ance for members like martin. An Air Force Veteran made of doing whats right, not whats easy. So when a hailstorm hit, usaa reached out before he could even inspect the damage. Thats how you do it right. Usaa insurance is made just the way martins family needs it with hasslefree claims, he got paid before his neighbor even got started. Because doing right by our members, thats whats right. Usaa. What youre made of, were made for. Usaa you never leave the house without your luvs or your big dad energy. Were made for. Because. When you see a leaky situation you have luvs ready for that prolevel leak proteion. Luvs. Parent like a pro. Visible is wireless that doesnt play games. Visible, wireless that gets better with friends. Wanna help kids get their homework done . Well, an internet connections a good start. But kids also need computers. And sometimes the hardest thing about homework is finding a place to do it. So why not hook Community Centers up with wifi . For kids like us, and all the amazing things were gonna learn. Over the next 10 years, comcast is committing 1 Billion to reach 50 Million lowincome americans with the tools and resources they need to be ready for anything. I hope youre ready. cause we are. The latest republican in missouri running for the senate also happens to be facing Felony Gun charges. Hes the st. Louis homeowner seen last summer along with his Wife Patricia pointing guns at demonstrators walking outside their home. The couple pleaded not guilty in october to Weapons Charges and evidence tampering. Joining me is former republican congresswoman barbara comstock. Thank you. Its wonderful to have you in studio. Whats your reaction to that man being the face of the republican party . This is someone who is running for senate. Well, this is an unserious person. This is unfortunately part of the trump era. You get characters like this, whether its Matt Gaetz or Marjorie Greene and now youre having this going over and infecting the senate. I dont expect you will even get a nomination. I have a favorite in missouri myself who is not a man. So i think the republican party, if they want to win back the majority certainly cant have this type of ridiculous candidate. Theres no indication they arent sort of leaning into that, though, right . Were seeing that. I certainly dont think a lot of serious republicans, including a lot of people in missouri, want somebody like this. But this kind of notoriety they get, unfortunately, encourages this type of thing. And you have consultants around them who feel like they can make money promoting someone like that. Thats really probably whats more behind this. Theres money to be made. They certainly will make some. Congressman andrew clyde, a republican, compared Capitol Rioters to tourists. Of course, a photo has surfaced that shows him beararricading a door on January 6th. He cant think this is a normal day for congress. We asked his constituents about this. I havent the slightest idea why politicians say what they say. But you agree that maybe he is a little misleading . He shouldnt say that. Thats horse baloney. Thats not true. So you disagree with your congressman . Yeah. And you voted for him . Yeah. Unfortunately. So, look, thats a sampling. Its not like we can say thats a poll. And he may have his support but what do you think about some people who did say who say they voted for him. They dont like what he said. I think its a great opportunity if that district, which is a red district, even after redistricting to find somebody serious who wants to be a good conservative republican but will not embarrass their district like that. Trump Republican Allies are now seeking a kind of Arizonastyle Audit in other swing states. Is this georgia, for instance. Is this what were going to see kind of crazy audits after audits in states where republicans dont like the outcome . Well, thats the problem with humoring the former president as long as has been done. Thats why i think the January 6th commission is so important and why im so proud of my friend John Katko for, you know, getting 35 republicans. And you look at the list of 35 republicans. These are very serious legislators, as is John Katko. This is why we need the commission Because this kind of nonsense is going to continue to go on out in the states until we get the records. Get the Phone Records. Get the documents of how that rally went on, on January 6th. What was all the leadup in planning . The speakers there at that rally, which were all the major trump allies, that was no accident. And i think democrats should have already done that themselves. They certainly Phone Records arent partisan. Hotel records. People coming in. All of that. Used to be chief counsel on the government reform committee. Thats a committee that can subpoena anything they want. Very broad jurisdiction, as broad as any criminal jurisdiction. They can be deposing people. I would prefer the commission Because it would be more nonpartisan but these kind of actions in the states show why we need this commission and why i was very pleased to see at least 35 republicans stand up and be counted and respond to John Katko who just implored them, put politics aside. And that speech that he gave, everybody should watch. It was very brief but just he had been a former organized crime prosecutor. He had to send people out in Harms Way to do it for our police, our Capitol Officers who protect us every day. But very quickly, if this does not get through the senate, would you support the house going it alone with members of congress on the commission or the committee . Well, i certainly think it would be better to be in the 9 11 style. My predecessor, frank wolf, was one of the key people who pushed the 9 11 commission. So thats the this is what its modeled on. So i think we have a very good precedent in the 9 11 commission. The former leaders of that worked well together. I think somebody like a Will Hurd who just retired from congress has a great background in the cia, undercover. Was on the intel committee. Hed be a great vice chairman. Republicans get to put half of the members. It will be 55. We get to have that vice chairman. It would be much more, you know will be less partisan in that situation. But the facts arent partisan. When you get Phone Records and see who Donald Trump called that day, see who he was calling the weeks before. If you bring in the Vice President pence and depose him about what went on, the White House counsels office who was advising the president not to do a lot of the things he was doing. We need to hear from them. Theres no reason that Congress Cant do it. I prefer a nonpartisan body to do it. But they need to get it rolling right away and subpoena those records. They dont have to wait until this is approved. Former congresswoman barbara comstock, thank you for being with us. Thank you. The insurrection may have been a low point in american history, but it was a High Point for many rioters in the capitol complex. Well have a report ahead. High times ahead. Plus, how the trump made me do It Defense reveals the Big Lie for exactly what it is. The Capitol Riot suspects have bragged about lots of things online, but one trend seemingly overlooked is just how many of them got high during the breach. Cnns Marshall Cohen has been digging through the Court Documents and Laura Jarrett has this super blunt new day explainer. Reporter oh, the things they carry. Flex cuffs, bear spray, pepper spray, maga hats, horns, a racist flag, and thats not all. The mob that stormed the u. S. Capitol also carried thc. Cnn digs through Court Documents from the take, were discovering a trend. Suspects hit the chambers, the feds say that wasnt their only hit. One guy bragged on snapchat, quote, smoke out the capitol, baby. In fact, were told he cheered on how many others were Smoking Joints inside the building. Another posted a video on facebook of himself blazing up something inside the capitol and if that wasnt enough, he added a caption confirming it. Another suspect fired one up on the steps of the capitol. A tipster outed him sending a snapchat posted by the suspects apparent daughter saying, in case you ever wondered who my father is, dad later said he was damn proud of being there. Another also on video saying, quote, we made history guys. People are Smoking Weed in here. Please, may i please hit that . He did. And while that one seemed impromptu, others apparently hashed out their premeditated herb. One guy passed around prerolled joints earning him the nickname of Capitol Rotunda dooby smoker. In videos that went viral, mr. Doobie made himself easy to identify with his Usa Flag pants. But the suspects didnt just go One Toke over the line. Police stopped another guy once he left the building. On him . Pot, two pipes and a bottle of bourbon. These men have all pleaded not guilty or they are fighting the charges. None of them has been charged with any drugrelated offenses but certainly, while they failed to burn down democracy, they succeeded in burning one down on their way to jail. Talk about a gateway drug. I dont have any pot jokes left. Did they bring snacks . I dont know. That was a hit. Super blunt as you said. Wow. That was weird, though. Just strange. I had no idea, and you see Marshall Cohen with all his spare time going through and finding all these examples in Court Documents that laura laid out so clearly. I kind of want to hang with Marshall Cohen now as an aside. Captain doobie. Thank you to laura for that. So among Capitol Hill rioters and trump lawyers, there is a legal defense that keeps coming up again and again. Trump made me do it. John avlon with a reality check. The lawyer for the socalled Qanon Shaman raised a lot of eyebrows when he floated this odd defense. Quote, a lot of the defendants are all fing short bus people. These are people with brain damage, you know, bad people, subjected to fourplus years of god damn propaganda, the likes of which the World Hasnt seen since fing hitler. Theres a lot to unpack there, but watkins seems to be arguing his client was easily duped, misled by the constant lies from Donald Trump and right wing media. Incited to riot. Now this is all obviously offensive, especially to the developmentally disabled but its not isolated. It seems to be part of a pattern Because earlier this month, the attorney for an accused attacker said his client suffered from foxitis. After watching the channel constantly air trumps false claims of a stolen election he believed what was being fed to him. The client shouted, you want more . Weve got more. 1776 all over again and stormed the capitol wearing a bu bulletproof vest. The line that they were just following orders from trump has become a common refrain. He had me believing that an american election was stolen. Likewise, the lawyer for a proud boy said he realizes he was duped into these mistaken beliefs. They didnt only derange people who attacked the capitol. One of the few cases of confirmed Voter Fraud came from a Pennsylvania Man names Bruce Barton who tried to cast a ballot in his dead Mothers Name for Donald Trump. He told the judge, i listened to too much propaganda and made a stupid mistake. The common defense is they were duped by lies. And not coincidentally, thats the same defense were hearing from some of the prime propagators of that propaganda, like Protrump Lawyer Sidney powell who is facing a massive Defamation Suit for spreading the Big Lie. Powells defense is that no reasonable person would ever believe her bogus claims. Therefore, the people who did believe her, and there are many of them, were, by definition, not reasonable. They were easily duped fools. And while Powells Defense seems novel, its almost exactly what lawyers for Protrump Conspiracy Theorist Alex Jones argued back in 2018. Look, big Lies Cant withstand the scrutiny of court. Its a place of truth and consequences. But what does the persistence of the Big Lie say about the people who still parrot. After all, its the Litmus Test for republican leadership now and believed by a maujority of their party. We see it in their effort to rewrite history like clyde. There was no insurrection and to call it an insurrection, in my opinion is a boldfaced lie. Which is absurd. Even without the photograph of clyde desperately trying to barricade the door of the house that day. Which begs the question, does clyde think his supporters are stupid . And if you are a person who still buys into the Big Lie, what does it mean that so many of your fellow travelers are now saying they were essentially brainwashed while some of the Big Lies most prominent pushers argue that no reasonable person could believe their toxic nonsense . They are saying that youre a useful idiot who can be milked for more money and political advantage as the grip goes on. Theres an old saying in poker that applies. If you look around the table, and cant tell who the sucker is, its you. This isnt a game. Its our democracy. And thats your reality check. John avlon, thank you very much.
