And maybe, the most shocking part is, these days, thats what passes for for a lot of republicans. Like, 35. That means a lot. So, you see their names there. I am going to put them up. Scroll them up right on the screen for you. There they are. In doing so, they went against their spineless leaders, who are so afraid of a president , who was voted out of office six months ago, that they dont even want to investigate the insurrection that could have killed them. Could have killed them. Dont want to investigate it. Gop sources are telling cnn that 35 republican yes votes represents, quote, a huge bipartisanship, in todays world. But that means, 175 republicans buried their heads in the sand, and voted against the commission. So, i want you to think about this. The vote took place, in the very same building that the rioters stormed hunting for lawmakers. And 175 of them, still, couldnt muster up the courage to do what they have to do what they have to do. To do what they know is right. Democrat, tim ryan, absolutely unloading on those republicans, tonight. We have people scaling the capitol, hitting the Capitol Police with lead pipes across the head, and we cant get bipartisanship what else has to happen in this country . Cops this is a slap in the face to every Rankandfile Cop in the United States. We need twopolitical parties, in this country, that are both living in reality. And you aint one of em. Yeah. I like his emotion, in this his rage. There should be more of it. There should be more of it, and there should be more of it, on the republican side. The people who stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes, and instructions, of their president. And having that belief, was a foreseeable consequence of the growing crescendo of false statements, conspiracy theories, and reckless hyperbole, which the defeated president kept shouting into the largest megaphone on planet earth. Hmm. That was the other that was the Mitch Mcconnell alter ego, that day. That, as a source tells us that cnn is telling cnn that Kevin Mccarthy pulled out all stops. Calling members that he heard were supporting the commission. Right . But asked if you know, he was worried about being subpoena, mccarthy said, i have no concern about that. But Thats Somebody playing politics with it. Not wanting to get to the core of what happened. So, lets break down that statement. Okay . I have no concern about that. He does. Thats Somebody Playing Politics with it. Thats you. Not wanting to get to the core of what happened. You dont. See how that works . Yall think people are really stupid. Thats why i have to get here, every night, and you really think people are dumb. And i if youre falling for that. See how they lie and deny . But then, the truth comes out if you just Look for it. Like, all you have to do is just Look for the truth, and it comes out. That is why we need a commission to investigate what happened on January 6th. The truth comes out, if you just Look for it. Who is being sued for defamation, by two women. Carole, who alleges he raped her in the 1990s and former Apprentice Contestant who alleges he sexually assaulted her in 2007. Who is being sued by his niece, mary trump, alleging that he, his sister, and his late brother, committed fraud to keep her from getting her fair share of the estate of trumps father. Who botched the response to the worst pandemic in 100 years. A pandemic that has killed more than 480,000 americans. 580,000 americans. 580,000. Who suggested a powerful light, or disinfectant, could kill the virus, even though he knew it was airborne and didnt tell americans. Who courted white supremacists, over and over and over. Who ran, in the first place, on the Racistbirther Lie that Barack Obama was not born in this country. Who repeatedly tried to divide us on race. Who incited an insurrection on one of the darkest days in american history. His supporters rioting, in an attempt to overturn the foundation of our democracy. Our freeandfair election. And lets remember, his republican enablers are trying to rewrite the history of that terrible day, still. Comparing bloodthirsty rioters to tourists. Calling them peaceful patriots. And trying to head off the January 6th commission, before its even begun. Members of the Capitol Police telling cnn, a group of 30to50 officers, trueamerican heroes, who risked their lives to protect our democracy, sending a scathing letter to congress. Quote, it is inconceivable that some of the members we protect would downplay the events of January 6th. Members safety was dependent upon the heroic actions of uscp. It is a privileged assumption for members to have the Point Of View that it wasnt that bad. That privilege exists, because of brave Men And Women of the uscp protected you, the members. Hmm. Republican congressman ed upton. One of the 35 republicans, who voted for the commission, saying this. If it had not been for the brave capitol and metropolitan police Men And Women that day, who knows how many of our heads wouldve been swinging on those gallows that were constructed on the east front of the capitol . There it is. You can see it, now. But we, all, saw it on that day. The gallows, with our own eyes. Lets remember, exactly, what happened that day. Lets remember the violent that violent trump supporters, the ones who beat police officers, the officers who were trying to defend our capitol. Videos, that, like so many weve seen, are disturbing to watch. This ones showing a suspect, allegedly, attempting to rip off an officers gas mask. Tonight, the House Voting to create an independent commission to investigate the January6th Insurrection at the capitol. 35 republicans voting yes, with democrats, breaking with Kevin Mccarthy, who called on his members to vote against it. Legislation, now, goes to the senate, where republican leader Mitch Mcconnell opposes it. I want to bring in, now, cnns chief political correspondent, dana bash. And political commentator, charlie dent. A formerrepublican congressman. Good evening, to both of you. Charlie, you wont mind, dana, i will start with dana. She is one of my favorite people in the world. Hi, dana. Good to see you you. Hi, don. Lets talk about this stuff. 35 house republicans broke with with mccarthy, even after he made these calls to twist arms. Thats according to our jamie gangel. Is this a rebuke of their relationship or his leadership, i should say . Certainly. But he made it so, because the the week started with the republican leadership in the house saying that this is a vote of your conscience. Were not going to tell you how to vote. Changed, very rapidly, to Kevin Mccarthy saying, publicly, he was opposed to it. Privately, with the Congressman Dents former colleagues telling them that he was opposed to it and why. And then, even it was under the radar, i, too, am told that he and other members of the republican leadership were twisting arms, big time, to try to keep that 35 number down. And because he put his leadership on the line with this, it is it it can be seen as No Other in No Other way than a rebuke to his leadership, with 35 members of his caucus saying, no. Were going to were going to vote for the truth. Were going to vote to get the truth out. And not vote to, you know, suppress that, because thats what the former president wants and, you know, there are people worried about subpoenas. And perhaps, Kevin Mccarthy is one of them. Although, he says that thats not whats driving this. Yeah. So, take us take us forward, charlie, to the senate, if you will. You know the folks up there. And you know how this works. You know, very well. Does this create any momentum, at or add any pressure on senate republicans, despite mcconnell opposing it . They need, what, ten gop votes . Don, i do think it provides for some pressure on the senate. Because if you Look at the 35 votes, they were geographically dispersed. Members from utah, idaho, wyoming, oklahoma. The deep south. Arkansas. You had a you had a broad number of members voting for this. I think it puts pressure on the senate. The fact that senator mcconnells come out against it certainly puts his finger, heavily, on the scale against. But there are seven impeachment votes in the senate. Or removal votes. And they need to pick up three more. So, i still think its a bit of a heavy lift in the senate. But it can happen. But even if this fails in the senate, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer has said he is going to create a select committee that will be more partisan. But they are still going to go through these motions to investigate what happened January 6th. They are better off with an independent commission, in my view. Let me ask you, because you saw i dont know if you saw gary Tuchmans Story on the capitol, right . He went down to the district of the of the congressman. The gop lawmaker clyde, who said that, you know, it was tourists, charlie. But he said, notone republican, the ones who even voted for him, not one thought that it was a normaltourist event on capitol hill. So, im wondering if thats if maybe, at this point, that some of at least the congressmen are feeling, are understanding their constituents arent going along with this. And they may have to vote for a commission . Well, its clear, to me, don, that i think every every member, Nearlyevery Member in the houserepublican conference, understands that Donald Trump lost the election. You know, its its sad that only so few are willing to admit it publicly. But for that one member to stand up there and suggest that that was some kind of a Tourist Day for these folks. I mean, its just beyond absurd. I mean, its its so its laughable. Its a clownish statement. And it, you know, to me, it it seems that a lot of these members, thoughtful members, like French Hill from arkansas and Mike Simpson from idaho, representing conservative areas. They are voting for a commission. Its clear, their constituents want it. Its clear that they believe its the right thing to do, and they are willing to suffer the consequences, whatever they are. So, if im a senator, i got to be thinking hard about that if i am a senator from idaho or arkansas or some of these other states. And they see their House Members putting their necks out. I think they are going to have to take a serious Look at this. Dana, i see you shaking your head in agreement. But on the other hand, some republicans are telling cnn this January 6th investigation could h hurt their midterm message. Is that persuasive, when we are talking about an attack on our democracy . And they havent had a message, other than, you know, a protrump one . It is persuasive, if the whole reason for the Action Or Inaction among so many republicans right now is about their own keeping their own power. And even advancing their own power, because theyre in the minority, right now, in the senate and the house. So much of this is about trying to Retake Control of the senate. Retake control of the house. Kevin mccarthy wants to be speaker of the house. And they believe that, especially in the house, the path to do that goes right through Donald Trump. Because not so much because they think that he will help some of these members, who are in districts, like Congressman Dent was in. Moderate, you know, sort of, moreswingy districts. But because he could hurt. Because he could, you know, put his thumb on the scale for a very conservative member, who could beat an incumbent. Or beat somebody in an open seat in a primary. And that means that that seat goes to the democrats. So, that is its very, very specific calculus. But it doesnt speak to the bigger question, don. The right question, which you are uposing, Which Is, who care about that . What everybody should care about, as americans, never mind if youre a politician, or not. Is how did this happen . How was the united States Capitol attacked . And the fact that the people who were under attack, so many of them arent voting for a commission to get the answer to that, in as much of a bipartisan way as possible, really speaks to how dire the divide it right now. Yeah. I i the longer this goes on, both of you, i just i think they are making a terrible miscalculation. I think that the they i think the they believe the formerpresident actually has more power, than he has. And that he will have, in the future. Especially, come 2024. Or 2022, as a matter of fact. Charlie, this is the second time, in a few weeks, where the focus has been all over how much the gop is in is in disarray. The White House is firmly focused on policy. How much of that connects with the people, at home, right now . Oh. Well, i i think, right now, the problem for the gop is that, you know, theyre theyre really not that focused on policy. They have been focused on everything, but policy. N now, Shelley Moore Capito and a few are certainly focused on infrastructure but this has been a big problem. I mean, the fact that its been exposed now. The conference, in the house anyway, is really fractured. You Look at a guy, like john katko, a good, thoughtful member. Negotiates a fair deal with Benny Thompson on the commission. Only to have his legs taken out from under him by his own leadership. That sends a terrible signal, to members, that, you know, the leadership, you know, wants you to empower you to go out there and do your job. Only and they are expecting a predetermined outcome, at the same time. You cant have both. And i think i think it has a chilling effect on a lot of these members, who are trying to work, in good faith, to have their leaders work against them. So they are not focused on policy, sadly, at the moment. They are focused on all these other things. And, you know, loyalty to a president a former president who may be indicted. And then what, don . What do they do if Donald Trump gets indicted . They still going to continue with this Trump Love and Trump Loyalty . I mean, at some point, you have to you have to cut bait. Its not clear, tonight, when senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer will schedule a vote on the House Bill to create a January6th Commission. But we, already, know that minority leader, Mitch Mcconnell, opposes it, and other gop senators may fall in line. Lets discuss, now, with veteran journalist, dan rather. A majority of house republicans voted against the commission. And it it may get killed, altogether, by republicans when it goes to the senate. Now, you posed this question. Can republicans handle the truth . We posed that question last night, too. Doesnt seem like it, does it . No, theres nothing in there recent record covering the last at least four years, that would indicate that they can handle the truth. Furthermore, they seem to believe that, if they tell the Big Lie often enough, and engage in the massive coverup, that enough people will, either, believe what theyre saying, if they say it often enough. Or the people will just sort of lose interest, as time goes by. I think its critical, don, to see what this is about. January 6th. The public at large say January 6th is beginning to fade, in some peoples memories, just what this was. Lets keep in mind, this was a a a riot, an insurrection. It was, in my opinion, a kind of attempt at a coup. It left five dead, 140 Capitol Police injured. It suspended the electoralcollege count, confirming bidens election. Thats what it was about. This was an armedinsurrectionist mob, got inside the capitol, and actually stopped the Electoral College count. And by the way, was threatening the life of the Thenvice President of the United States. This is makes it one of the most damaging days in the peacetime history of our country. We cant lose cant lose sight of that. Can can we, the people, handle the truth . And can republicans handle the truth . Frankly, a lot of this is cynical. Overwhelmingly, republicans know what the truth is. But they decided to follow this autocrat who is sulking away, down in florida, that other guy. And the cult that he has got in a shameless fashion. We we we keep saying the Big Lie often enough. And then, we have this massive coverup. And this will just fade away. I dont think, in the minds of most people in the public, its going to fade away. But Mitch Mcconnell holds a lot of power in the senate. I am aggoing to use the phrase used early in your program. I think its a heavy lift. But that doesnt mean the coverup, necessarily, succeeds because the democrats, remember, they control both houses of congress up till now. They can open congressional hearings. Right. Thats not as good as a commission. But if they dont get a commission, thats the nextbest thing. So, lets Look at this. I mean, if youre if you are a glasshalffull person, and if youre Looking for the truth. Still, i mean, its not a lot. But in this day and age, its a lot, i think. Theres still 35 republicans who broke away from leadership. And what the former president wanted and voted to fully investigate the mob on on the capitol. The mob, that he incited on the capitol. So, thats not a small number. Given that theres been, you know, an ongoing purge within the gop, no . No, i agree, its not a small number. And it could be it could be an indication that things are beginning to turn, just a little bit. I agree, its not a small number. 35 republicans in the House Vote for the commission. And its entirely possible that we could have what we do not expect happen in the senate. Again, i think its its its its odds against. But Donald Trump is in charge of his party. And he is whether he does it directly or indirectly, hes threatening every member of the party. Every congressionalseat holder, Senate And House of representatives, if they dont take in the Big Lie and coverup. He will take them on in the next primary and beat them. Now, you know, it requires some profiles in courage on the part of the republicans. And i tip my hat to the 35 republicans in the house who voted for the commission today. The other republicans have to Look in the mirror, ask themselves and answer the question, speaking of can you handle the truth . They they put their own, personal ambitions and their party, ahead of their country. Now, there are people who would call that cowardice. No ones done it publicly, so far, as i know. But they run the risk of that being what history how history judges them. But, don, i do think this has a long way to go, yet. And even if the commission is not approved, which its still odds against that it it wont be approved, its not going to be approved there is a lot the democrats can do. But heres one thing the republicans and Donald Trump are betting on. They believe that, in the end, that the democrats usually play a little soft. That the democrats dont really have the heart. Dont really have the gut to press this, as hard as they might. I think, we are about to find out whether they they they are right in that assumption, or not. Yeah. I posed that question last night. If if democrats really realized what they were up against, with this whole voter suppression. With the whole trying to whitewash the insurrection and so on. So but, let me ask you this, mr. Rather. Do you think do you think that this country can function, Without A Second functioning operate, Without A Second, functioning party . Because it doesnt appear that there is a secondfunctioning party. At least, one party doesnt believe in reality. Don, i hesitate because im just not sure. As you and i have discussed, many times before, you know, i hope im pretty good about reporting on what has happened or what is happening. When it comes to predicting the future, its very hard to say. But i dont want to dodge your question. I think the country really needs two functioning, political parties. And without a twoparty system, at least a twoparty system, quite honestly, i would i would consider it very dangerous time. Thats the reason i keep saying this is a perilous time. Because the republican voting has been turned over and taken over, almost completely, by Donald Trump. And the party that Donald Trump leads, Donald Trump, himself, it doesnt believe in reality. It doesnt believe in the truth. It cant handle the truth. And it thinks, as long as it engages, keeps telling lies over and over, over and over. And runs a very sophisticated coverup, that they can get through this. And by the way, don, if i may. A number of people have asked, i think to be one of the very core questions about this whole january6th thing. Is we still dont know why it took so long for the national guard to come in. The capitol had been breached. An armed mob was stopping the Electoral College, and it took two hours for the national guard to move. We thats a big question mark. And then, behind that is, where was President Trump when that was happening . Was he talking, if anybody . The incident was captured on bodycam video, Which Is now being seen by the public, for the first time. A warning, it is disturbing to watch. Heres cnns ryan young. Reporter Terrifying Pleas from Ronald Greene, after a highspeed chase led to a deadly confrontation with Louisiana State police, just outside the city, in may of 2019. In bodycam video, obtained by the associated press, troopers can be seen, repeatedly, punching greene, after dragging him out of his vehicle. Taser, taser, taser. Reporter troopers tased green multiple times, while he is face down on the ground, as they attempt to handcuff him. Another trooper can be seen kicking greene. The associated press released three segments of the original video, which it says, it 46minutes long. Only two of the Video Clips have audio. Cnn has, neither, reviewed or obtained the original video. And its unclear what occurred before or in between the Video Clips. The videos being seen by the public for the first time. But The Incident took place two years ago. The Bodycam Footage is shocking, considering the way the encounter was described. And Louisiana State police initial report in 2019, which says troopers attempted to pull greene over for an unspecifiedtraffic violation, that ended when greene crashed his vehicle. The report, also, says, quote, greene was taken into custody, after resisting arrest. And a struggle with troopers. Greene died on the way to the hospital, the report said. At no time on the video can troopers be seen trying to render anymedical aid to green, who according to the associated press, was face down and moaning for more than nine minutes. Cnn has reached out to the attorneys for the officers for comment. Lee merritt is an attorney for the Greene Family, and spoke to cnn. Its not only what you are seeing but the sounds that go with it.
