Bombarding gaza. The military says they targeted homes of highranking members of hamas In Gaza and nine miles of tunnels. On the other side of the conflict, israelis in ber sheeba, Ashkelon And Ashdod ran for shelter 56 dozens of rockets were fired from gaza. Senior international correspondent Ben Wedeman joins us now from jerusalem. Ben, the pressure to get a ceasefire is mounting. What is holding the israelis and hamas back from getting to that point . It appears at least from the israeli side they have certain objectives they want to achieve and they havent achieved them yet. Over the last 24 hours or so, theyve been focusing on whAt They claim are network of tunnels, they call it, metro under zgaza thAt They say hamas is using to move troops and material and rockets around. Hamas, for its part, continues to fire rockets into israel. Both sides are speaking with the egyptians, with the americans and others to try to perhaps work something out. In the past essentially the fighting stops when both sides have reached their threshold of pain, and certainly there has been a lot of pain over the last eight days. But until now, these attempts At Trying to broker or mediate not necessarily a ceasefire but just at least a few hours of calm to allow humanitarian goods to get in to gaza, for instance, have simply failed. Ben, the israelis are trying to explain and defend hitting that building that housed press offices, Associated Press and al jazeera. Have they presented any evidence that hamas was there . Theyve said a lot of words. An unnamed israeli military official spoke to the foreign Media Today to try to explain why this 12story Building was brought down. He tried to differentiate between targeted strikes, the kind i see many times where a certain window is the target of a rocket and it goes right through it and kills whoever theyre trying to kill, and on other instances they want to bring down an entire building because there are several targets within it. But what is lacking beyond words is evidence. Even u. S. Secretary of state Antony Blinken said he has actually not seen the evidence or the reason why israel brought it down. I see the united states as well as we, the media, would like to know exactly why it was done but even beyond that, it still doesnt seem comprehensible given the level of damage. The simply was simply brought down to Rubble And Dust in the street, and on top of that, when you destroy an entire building, 12story Building, 12story Building, theres a lot of damage to the areas around it. In fact, today a building was hit In Gaza that israel says housed Hamas Intelligence but that building also included the Red Crescent Society across the street, one of the ministry of healths main covid testing centers, which was also severely damaged. The israelis may have specific targets but theres a lot of damage that goes with it when they hit them. Ware hearing some of the that criticism from u. S. Lawmakers as well. Ben wedeman for us. Ben, thank you very much. The White House said it is working through quiet and intensive diplomacy, their words, and those efforts are more effective than a public call for a ceasefire. Lets bring in white House Correspondent Phil mattingly. Phil, the president at The End of his Remarks Today mentioned hes going to be speaking with Benjamin Netanyahu this hour. What do we know about that call . The president was asked if he would personally call for a ceasefire, something the u. S. Has not done up to this point. And that was his response. Didnt weigh in directly. Said he was going to be speaking with the israeli Prime Minister within the hour. It will be interesting whAt They say in the wake of that Phone Call but that Phone Call, guys, is a part of the quiet and intensive effort the u. S. Decided was their strategic best course course At The moment. That included 60 calls, not just through the parties involved, counterparts in israel, palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas spoke with President Biden. And national Security Adviser Jake sullivan has had a number of talks with his direct counterparts, including with the egyptians, cutries, several key players in the region. And what you are hearing from officials behind the scene, yes, theres a growing of concern about the scale of the violence and there doesnt seem to be a stop to it any time soon but they believe At This point in time their best course of action is work with regional players and that could push the two sides to some type of agreement over the next several days, if not longer. One the key things to keep in mind is back in 2014 the egyptian government played a crucial role in the ceasefiring In Haltering that conference. And maybe thats whAt The u. S. Is hoping to will shake up this time around. But the dynamics are very different and It Will be interesting to see whAt The president or White House says about this situation. Pressure is going not just from the republicans who wants the president to say more to israel, but his party, two dozen democrats put out a Statement Calling for a ceasefire. To this Point Calling for a ceasefire, theres an effort in the u. N. To call for a ceasefire but the President And Secretary of state have not gone that far. What are the politics around that considering they can call for the ceasefire and continue that quiet intense Diplomacy Work that jake sullivans talked about . And the u. N. Also blocked a u. N. Security Council Statement calling for a ceasefire. Part of this might be the fact the biden administration knows they dont have a lot of leverage over Benjamin Netanyahus government, and that basically theyre likely going to follow the Pattern Theyve done in the past. The israeli defense forces, when they get an opportunity to attack the militants theyve been studying for years, they want to make sure, as they explained in a Security Briefing over the weekend, they have taken out enough of the infrastructure thAt They dont have to face a resurgence of strikes in the future. And in terms of that briefing that i believe you were on over the weekend, what is the End Game . When will they have taken out enough infrastructure to stop . They dont exactly lay that out but they say theyve taken out more than two dozen senior hamas military leaders, and theyve been attacking the nodes, the connecting network of what Ben Wedeman mentioned, those miles and miles of tunnel the iss and militants use to get from location to location, civilian areas to the rocket launch site. So theyre not going to take all of them out, theyve said, but theyre working on it. Theyre also working on stores of rockets. They have said to organizations like the ap thAt They believe thAt The militants have something like 12,000 rockets stored up and theyve only fired about 3,000 of those. So that means there are a lot more stockpiles thAt The idf wants to take out so when they finally call a halt to this, answering the pleas of diplomats and international leaders, they will have crippled the militant organization for at least a couple of years to come. Kimberly, on the topic of u. S. Influence, President Trump was a fullthroated Lockstep Supporter of Benjamin Netanyahu. No protest over israeli expansion in East Jerusalem or the west bank. How does the residue of that relationship impact how this president can approach, has the credibility to approach netanyahu in this moment . Well, it gave netanyahu the green light to expand settlements, to also do the outreach to Arab Nations who have grown somewhat disenchanted with the palestinian leadership, and to move ahead with the abraham accords. It also gave them i think a sense of an an unreal sense of how the palestinian people in the arab world felt about this situation. I had Trump Administration tell me the palestinian people hate their leadership, theyre ready for a onestate solution. Theyre fine being under the israeli government. Its better to get jobs. Well, its taken one series of violent confrontations at The End of ramadan to galvanize not just the palestinian people within the country but we are seeing protests in baghdad, across the middle east. That kind of protest can pick up the momentum thats going to make it really hard for the gulf and other arab leaders to keep working with israel. Down the line that will make it harder for a number of things biden and his team had hoped to do knitting together some of these fissures across the middle east. Kim, what about here in the u. S. , what about in congress say . Are you hearing more criticism of Netanyahu And Israels actions this time around . Im hearing people go further, like Senator Bob Menendez shocked people by actually criticizing the attack on the building that housed the ap and al jazeera. And im also hearing from people not ready to go public thAt Theyre getting messages from people who were previously staunch supporters of israel who are now seeing things through Social Media thAt They werent able to see in such graphic detail before and its in their face, its in their feed, and thats going to make it a lot harder for the biden administration to just ignore this and keep it At The low priority that it had previously been. I think biden often likes to lead with the good news and he said 57 of american adults have one shot. Thats a good level of protection for 60 adults so far, and were still averaging more than A Million shots, A Million vaccinations per day. So i know were always quick to say ouuhoh, were not at Herd Immunity yet, but were getting there. Right, and we have come a long way, alisyn. I think its important to celebrate that. The fact we went up to at some point more than 3 Million vaccinations given every day. The fact we now have 90 of americans living within five miles of being able to access a vaccine. I think this is huge. The biden administration deserves so much credit for expediting getting the supply of vaccines, increase in the distribution of vaccines. I think At This point we have to acknowledge there are still a lot of people who want to get vaccinated, have not yet in making vaccination easy and convenient for them, getting paid time off work, having the vaccinations easily available in their community, thats really important. Let me ask the uhoh question then as its been branded by alisyn i will leave that for you. Thank you. I will take it. Youve got a piece in the washington post, dr. Wen, the headline, the Cdc Mask Guideline is a mess. The president needs to clean it up. And he needs to course correct now. He did not do that. Whats the consequence of that having not happened today . Yeah, i mean, i think whAt The cdc did on The One hand was really good because they provided individual Level Guidance and said, great news, if youre vaccinated, youre now very well protected. If they just stopped there, that would have been one thing. But since they also went on to say if youre vaccinated, take off your mask. That was just a policy recommendation, to lift mask mandates. And they evolved into a lot of Confusion And Patchwork of laws across the country and what i was hoping President Biden would do is say something more specific about the policy aspect. But to say were going to engage state and local governments, business leaders, unions to figure this out. One thing that would have been really important to hear is about vaccination verification. Thats ultimately what we need. If we can be assured that whoever has taken off their mask also has been vaccinated, not just counting on the honor system, but having some Vaccination Checkpoint or verification, i think that would have been huge. I wish we heard that from President Biden today. Starbucks and Grocery Store Publix are making their face coverings optional for vaccinated customers, starting today. As you point out, you know, this is, of course, the honor system. This worries you. What do you think is going to happen . I think that some vaccinated people are going to take off their masks, and thats fine, theyre well protected. Other people are not endangered from them but there will be unvaccinated people say, i never wanted to wear masks in the first place, im not vaccinated and i dont want to wear my mask. They will be going into these spaces and what i fear is we made life much harder and riskier for those unvaccinated. Yes, some are by choice but a lot of people have not gotten around to being vaccinated. Maybe they have gotten vaccinated but are immunocompromised and not had the vuld immunity to the vaccine. And will i bring my children into starbucks . Probably not. I dont want them surrounded by unmasked and breathing people on them. Now that we are seeing younger and younger people being the proportionate individuals affected by covid19, im concerned about the impact of this on our children and those who cannot be vaccinated yet. Is Herd Immunity, especially by this tliimeline the presiden set, the vignette of Fourth Of July in the backyard, hoping to reach 70 of adults with at least that first shot, is that still attainable in the near term . I think getting to 70 is definitely attainable. Were already at 60 of adults. I actually wish President Biden had set that 70 as a target for when we can be lifting indoor mask mandates. That is in fact whAt The governor of maryland had done, when 70 reach at least one shot, thats when we will list mask mandates. I think something tied with a metric would have been possible. But reaching Herd Immunity will be further and further away from what is likely, especially now that weve taken away a really powerful incentive to get people vaccinated. Yes, what we know is thAt Two national Security Council staffers were struck with the symptoms outside of the White House in november of 2020. What we know is the symptoms are consistent with what has been called havana syndrome, which has impacted spies and diplomats and u. S. Officials world wide At This point. The now, in an interview with 60 minutes former Navy Pilot Ryan Graves called whatever is out there a security risk. So youre seeing it both with the radar and with the infrared, and thAt Tells you thAt There is something out there . Pretty hard to spoof that. Every day, every day for a couple of years. Every day for a couple of years . Uhhuh. Highest probability is its a threat observation program. Could it be russian or chinese technology . I dont see why not. Are you alarmed . I am worried, frankly. If these were tactical jets from other countries hanging out up there, it would be a massive issue. But because it looks slightly different, were not actually willing to look At The problem in the face. Were happy to just ignore the fact these are out there watching us every day. Joining us now is cnn pentagon correspondent. What does the pentagon say about all of this . First, the pentagon is not confirming the authenticity of the photos we have seen. A couple came from 2019, including video from an aircraft that had shown fastmoving objects. Another set of photos appeared to show three objects that looked like a blimp, acorn and another object moving across screens and sensors. Crucially At This point and i think this is important to note No One is tossing Around The World alien. So i apologize on disappointing on this one. Beyond that, there isnt a full explanation. Is there a glitch in the sensors . Is it something being picked up . Is it a drone from a foreign Count Country . And it certainly lacks an explanation, an explanation from something that may be a threat. And this is something that should very much be looked into. To that end the pentagon set up a Task Force to look into late last year to look in on not unified Objects Ut R but unidentified phenomenons to see what it is and if it poses a threat. Theyre going to release a report backed by the Department Of Defense to offer a better explanation of what it is were looking at here. The former national Intelligence Director James Clapper said its good Theres Transparency here, that report should be unclassified but he also warns in speaking with cnn, expect quite a bit of ambiguity in that report, allowing those who want to read things into it whAt They want to read into it. So keep an eye out for the unexplained variety. Or they can call it whatever they want, it is fascinating. Let me just play, again, for people in case they missed it what Navy Pilots have seen with their own eyes. Watch a portion of this. My gosh going against the wind. The wind is 120 miles to the west. You can hear it in their voices. It is. We were amazed at what were seeing. What do you think when you see this . This is a difficult one to explain. You have rotation, high altitude, propulsion. I dont know what it is, frankly. Ralph, you heard him there. Basically, we dont have the technology or even technological knowhow to create something that defies the laws of technology as we know it. And so from all of your reporting, how do we explain that Navy Pilots keep seeing things without wings, without P Propulsion that can defy all of the laws . The big breakthrough since our reporting in 2017 is they are real. For years they were written off as psychological constructs, archetypes, hallucinations. And now we know from the navy imaging devices, et cetera, is theyre real. What we dont know is who they come from, whos behind the wheel, why theyre here and how do they produce the amazing aerodynamics thAt They have. The big questions are still out there, but at least we know for the first time these things have Phase Calty and thats a good start. I mean, its a gamechanger, but also, ralph, is it plausible this could be from russia or china, thAt They would have technology that is that many lightyears ahead of the united states . Extremely unlikely. Sources we talked to At The New York times say they cannot imagine that an earthly adversary has this advanced technology. As for our own technology showing up there, its even more unlikely we would risk accidents or disclosure of our secrets if they are our secrets in our own airspace. So everything points to an extraterrestrial explanation but, of course, No One wants to say that because its so outlandish and so unprovable thAt Their sticking with whAt They know. These things are you unidentified and real. But beyond that, No One knows. From your reporting, is there any evidence of these ufos ever crashing to earth, meaning is there any physical evidence that you think the government the u. S. Government may be examining . The contradictory attempts, its highly classified. We touched on it on our last story in the New York times that members of congress and congressional committees will agree on possible recovery of materials and possibly some Reverse Engineering is going on. These stories have been around for a while. Theyre very, very hard to confirm, as i said. Its all top secret and classified. But there are quite a number of accounts from reliable sources thAt There have been recoveries of materials, and that may be the next big thing to come out. Okay, so next month, a report is being presented to congress about some of this stuff. What will it include . First of all, i wouldnt set my clock by that deadline. We hear it may slip and it could easily slip. All they have to do is say were not quite ready, and theyll get an extension. Theres a lot of work to be done. There are a lot of secret corners of the government where this research is going on and the uap Task Force is having some trouble, we understand, of getting access to all of these secret corners. So i think its highly unlikely the deadline the deadline doesnt slip. Also, a lot of It Will be classified and some will be public, but maybe the most important details will not be. So what i would say or could say is whAt The government experts are making of these things and mostly what accounts for their amazing aerodynamics . They can appear and disappear almost at will. They operate in the water as well as skies. They operate at hypersonic speeds. I think they said something like 13,000 miles an hour. So these are extraordinary capabilities that nobody on earth as far as we can tell has the ability to do that. So thats whAt Theyre going to be analyzing.
