It is monday, may 17th. Overnight new strikes by israeli Defense Forces in gaza. The Air Strikes targeting the home of hamas commanders there. Israel says it also destroyed nine miles of the militant Groups Network of tunnels. It comes after the deadliest day yet in the weeklong conflict. Palestinian Health Officials now say at least 200 people have been killed in gaza. Hamas rockets launching across the border into israel, one slamming into a synagogue. Ten people killed in israel, despite growing international pressure for a ceasefire. This intense fighting between israelis and palestinians continues, and there is no apparent end in sight. Cnn is live in israel. This is extremely concerning and there does not appear to be any sort of bend to this trajectory. Reporter no, brianna. As we speak, i am hearing explosions. Just a few seconds ago before we went live on air, we saw an Iron Dome Intersection in the sky. Weve been Hearing Jets flying overhead and explosions. About two hours ago we had a red Alert Siren that sent us running into the bomb shelter. We do understand during that volley of rockets that we just received that included this town as well as a town further into israel that there was a direct hit on a building here. There are some injuries being reported. But this is part of the intense amount of activity we are seeing today. No indication that things are calming down. The Israeli Military have been very active today and overnight. Just in the last few hours, they say that they just killed that they just killed a senior palestinian Jihad Commander from the northern brigade. They also targeted some sort of submarine vessel. They have also been targeting what they call the hamas metro, a series of tunnels underneath the Gaza Strip which they say contains a lot of Military Intel as well as assets. Thats where they hide their weapons and hide themselves at the same time. But the Death And Destruction is rising. Now, according to the palestinian Ministry Of Health in gaza, which the Israeli Military disputes these numbers because they say they are run by hamas, they say there are 197 dead, including 58 children. The Israeli Military say they have killed 130 combatants. We dont know how those numbers add up with what were getting from the Ministry Of Health. In israel, ten israelis have been killed including a child and a soldier, but the activity continues here. Jets flying over head. Were continuing to hear explosions. The Israeli Military is continuing their operations. Benjamin netanyahu saying that the operation will continue until they feel they have reached their military objectives. We do not have any signs of cessation of the fire. The activity ongoing here. The Israeli Military saying they still have targets to reach. As this all happens, of course, civilians on both sides caught in the crossfire. Indeed they are. Hadas, thank you so much. Lets break this down now how the conflict between israel and the palestinians is playing out, on the ground, in the air as well. We have cnn Military Analysts and retired general Spider Marks with us. General, talk to us kind of broadly about the Military Strategy that israel is employing here. What you see, brianna, this gives you a very good overview in terms of what were facing in the region. Israel is trying to subjogate and hold down what is taking place in gaza where the palestinians have been. Clearly there is some challenges to do that. There are approximately 2 Million folks that are in this very small piece of terrain. But what is happening is the palestinians are launching approximately 1,000 missiles, rockets a day. Rockets are less guided than missiles are into israel. But israel has an incredibly effective Iron Dome System which is an Air Defense System that works extremely well and gets better through Artificial Intelligence as they work their algorithms to strike more effectively against the rockets that are coming in. So what is israel is trying to do is they dont want to try to put forces on the ground into gaza. That would be Crossing Over in a way that would be very, very ineffective for them. It would be very messy and there would be a lot of killing if they go into gaza to physically go after those tunnels. What they are trying to do is do very precise strikes against command facilities, offices of hamas, going after the tunnels, trying to bury into those tunnels with Deep Penetration rounds. And there are probably over 30 plus tunnels that exist within gaza that hamas and the palestinians use as a matter of routine for inventory, for munitions, for their ammunition, for their capability to command and control. So clear low what the israeli Defense Force wants to do is negate the palestinian ability to continue to launch these rockets. The key question is we dont know how this is going to end. We talk about once israel meets their military objectives. Im not certain we know what those look like. Its a very good point. And the Israeli Military, as you mentioned, theyre trying for these precision strikes. They released several before and after images of these, including this one here where the targets are allegedly those hamasbuilt Tunnel Openings that youre talking about. The thing is, though, this is clearly near heavily populated civilian areas in gaza. Israel is saying its trying to avoid civilian casualties. But is that even possible . I dont think it is possible. Look, there is a very precise process that all militaries go you would hope all militaries would go through which is the notion of Collateral Damage estimates and assessments so that you strike very precisely at an appropriate time against an appropriate target with the right munition. But its very difficult when you look at gaza, as i said, gaza is a very restricted area. Over 2 Million people are located there. So its incredibly difficult to go after a very precise target without achieving damage thats going to be affecting the population. Yeah, its incredible. You see how close it is to a school on that map as well and this is the reality of what were seeing happening there. General, thank you so much for being with us. Thank you, brianna. John. The cdcs new guidance on masks sounds simple on the surface. Get a vaccine and you can probably get rid of your mask. But in practice it is more complicated, depending where you live and work. Cnns chief Business Correspondent Christine romans joins us now. Businesses are trying to figure out how to deal with this. Look, its a victory. Vaccinated americans can leave the masks behind but there are a lot of caveats here. Its not as simple as Mask On, mask off. The cdc says Vaccinated Americans dont need to wear one but keep it in your purse or pocket. Customers and retailers are finding theres a lot of exceptions. Some stores welcoming vaccinated shoppers without a mask but some states still have mandates which makes it confusing. Starbucks, publix, cost co, trader joes and walmart say fully vaccinated customers dont need to wear the masks in stores unless, unless you live in a State Or Locality that has a mandate. Starbucks new policy starts today. Walmart sent a letter to its employees encouraging them to get vaccinated, and the fully vaccinated workers will be able to work without a mask starting may 18th. Even though Costco Wont require fully vaccinated shoppers to wear masks, they will still have to in the optical, hearing Aid And Pharmacy departments. Disney World And Busch gardens said guests do not have to wear masks outdoors. Guests will have to when theyre riding the rides and at indoor restaurants. So you can walk down main street without a mask but you need to put it back on to ride space mountain. Stores allowing vaccinated shoppers in without masks arent asking for proof of vaccination. Some retailers, including apple, Cvs And Target still evaluating this guidguidance. Its very clear about wearing a Mask On public transportation. You have to wear them even if you are vaccinated. John, a new wrinkle, there are some companies that are starting to consider whether they should move up their returntowork deadlines because of the rate of vaccination and because they dont need to have masks inside for vaccinated workers so thats a Key New Development to watch. I understand people want consistency, but if the sign on the door says you need a mask inside, you can put on a mask. It doesnt seem all that hard in many circumstances to me. And costco is telling its customers, look, were basically using the Honor System here. Were expecting that if youre not wearing a mask in a store, its because you are vaccinated. Were asking that people follow the rules out of their own good conscience. Christine romans, great to see you. Thanks so much. The largest Nurses Union in the u. S. Is criticizing the new Cdc Guidance On Masking saying that it is not based on science and is putting lives at risk. Joining us now is the president of the national nurses united, jean ross. Thank you so much for being with us. Look, the cdc actually said this decision is based on science. Its based on studies that show if you are vaccinated, you are very unlikely to get sick and that even if you get some kind of a breakthrough infection, the studies show youre not likely in any way to pass the virus on to others. Why isnt that good enough . Because its not. Its a couple of small studies that they looked at. Its also the fact that in the leadup you mentioned its very confusing for people. We have questions right now from our patients, from our families, from their families, from friends, and i can see why its confusing. We have spent so long trying to redevelop the trust that people have with their government entities about whats right and whats not right. And were not Out Of The Woods in this yet. Less than 37 of us are fully vaccinated. We still have over 35,000 cases a day, over 600 deaths a day, and this is not the time to be keeping your nurses, your other frontline workers, your essential workers at risk. And we dont like making them they have been the mask police. Now theyre having to be the vaccine police. They dont want that. I understand that. Are you concerned about your vaccinated members or are you concerned about your unvaccinated members . Well, were mainly concerned about people who have yet to get the vaccine. Again, weve been making strides in convincing people to get it. You still have that discrepancy between people of color being vaccinated versus the others. And so at points like this, this is not the time, especially with the variants running around, to be lax in your mitigating factors. So what were saying is when we go ahead. Im sorry, are you asking all of your members do you believe that all the nurses should be vaccinated . We encourage all nurses to be vaccinated, yes. But what were saying is when we do our job, a huge part of our job is to educate. And when we educate patients, their families, we can tell what weve instructed them to do is confusing or theyre going to have difficulty doing it, we go back. We revoke it. We say, okay, lets revise here, and thats really what we would like the cdc to do is to revoke and revise this new guideline and say masks are still an important mitigating factor, especially instance its airborne. Thats what we would like masks are still required in hospitals and in nursing homes. I understand that nurses work in other places beyond just that, but i imagine those are two locations that cover many, many of your members still required there. Yeah. Bear in mind, though, nurses arent just concerned about nurses. Nurses are concerned about The Publics health. Thats what were looking at, The Publics health. And so while you cant tell from looking at a person whether theyre vaccinated or not, and sad to say we have had people not being truthful about why they cant wear a mask, why are we expecting that if theyre unmasked they will be vaccinated . Its just a confusing measure and its something that is, i think, a little too early to do. So were asking people to go to nnu. Org masks to help us ask the cdc to please revoke and revise. The Cdcs Announcement that fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear masks even indoors has left many people with many questions. Here to answer some of these questions on all of our minds is dr. Ashish jha, who is the dean of brown University School of public health. Dr. Jha, good morning to you. The first question here, even if youre vaccinated, are there places where you should still be wearing a mask, gyms, sports arenas, airplanes, Grocery Stores, and a taxi, for instance . Yes, so good Morning And Thanks forrin having me on. Some of them are still required, for instance, airplanes, mass transit. The way i think about it, any super crowded place its reasonable to continue wearing a mask for a little bit longer. I guess if your gym is super crowded, that might be one idea. But i think, you know, certainly indoor packed concerts, those kinds of Things Id wear a mask. Other than that, i think fully vaccinated people can lose the mask. So a lot of questions have to deal with parents worried about what to do with their unvaccinated children. So is it safe to go in a store or an establishment that does not require masks with an unvaccinated child . Thats a really good question. Right now i have been pretty clear that while i think the cdc got the Science Right on vaccinated people not having to wear a mask, i do think indoor Mask Mandates should remain a little longer. In terms of walking in with kids, i have an unvaccinated child. If i went into a Grocery Store with him, i would ask him to wear a mask and i would personally wear one too. I think theyre safe as long as theyre masked up well. You said and alluded to this, some people are nervous going into crowded places now, especially if people are unmasked. What is your advice to them . Yeah, so, look, in the ideal world what we would be doing is implementing Cdcs Guidance as they laid out, which is vaccinated people can lose the mask, unvaccinated people have to wear the mask. Thats really, really hard to do. So what were going to see is unvaccinated people unmasked in indoor spaces and thats pretty risky. What im saying is as long as Infection Numbers are high in the community, as long as theres still a lot of people getting vaccinated but are not fully vaccinated yet, i think people should continue wearing masks indoors probably another few weeks. I set June 15th as a deadline for nationally when we can lift Mask Mandates but i wouldnt do it yet. Talk more about unvaccinated people and the risks they face now, particularly because i have to believe a lot of the people who are unvaccinated may well be the types of people who dont want to wear masks to begin with. Yeah, pretty dangerous moment right now to be unvaccinated because if you think about it, Infection Numbers are coming down and thats great. But theyre happening in a smaller and smaller pool of people, the unvaccinated. And the variants are really quite contagious. So if you are unvaccinated right now, you have a pretty high risk of getting infected and getting sick. As more of these mandates lift, the things that were doing to protect unvaccinated people also diminish. So more and more reasons why everybody should go out and get the shot. This morning a former ally to republican Congressman Matt Gaetz is set to plead guilty to a slew of federal crimes, including Sex Trafficking of a child. Joel greenberg has agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in ongoing investigations that could very well ensnare gaetz. Paula reed is live in orlando with the very latest here. This is a big day, paula. Reporter it is a big day. This is the first time weve seen Joel Greenberg since it is revealed that he is indeed formally cooperating with the justice department. A little later this Morning Hell appear here inside Federal Court and plead guilty to six federal charges. That is down from the original 33 federal charges that he was facing, which led a lot of people to wonder what is it that he gave investigators to encourage them to give him that kind of pretty sweet deal. We learned a little bit more on friday, and while of course everyone is asking about his associate, Congressman Matt Gaetz, and what all this means for him, the Congressman Wasnt mentioned at all in the formal Plea Agreement and in the details that we got on friday. But the key paragraph, the really key thing that were looking for even today is the fact that we know greenberg will admit to the court that not only did he have sex with a minor at least seven times, but that he also introduced that minor to other men who paid her for sex and thats the big question going forward, who were these men. Will they be named publicly, and will they eventually be charged . Congressman gaetz has denied any wrongdoing and have attacked Joel Greenbergs credibility. But we know investigators looking into the congressman, they have other witnesses and they have hundreds and hundreds of documents and records of transactions that theyre all looking at as they decide whether they have enough information to charge the congressman. Repeated references to others and other men in this Cooperation Agreement really jump off the page. You dont get from 33 counts to 6 for nothing. Greene repeatedly seeks out confrontation with aoc without any fear of losing her job, and its fair to say that immunity may fly in congress but it doesnt fly in the real world. So, look, youre the one who gives out advice here. Members of congress might need some here. Would she, meaning Marjorie Taylor Greene, get away with this in any workplace in america . Well, you know, i would like to say that it would be totally irresponsible for any company to keep her employed and that hr would be on top of this, but unfortunately weve had a year, almost a full year of uprising in america and a realization that some employees are treated differently than others. So i would like to think that your local Hr Lady would be all over this, but id say 5050. But the red flags would be what . Bullying and harassment. My understanding is theyre really big nonos in any corporate structure. Well, for sure theyre big nonos. They have been big nonos since the dawn of time, were all adults. I think it all depends on how leadership values talent. If youre someone who shows up and produces and does a good job, and im using Air Quotes, you can get away with a lot. So i guess the question is, is Kevin Mccarthy going to act like a local Hr Leader and let some of this Stuff Go or is he going to step up like a ceo in 2021 and really tackle this head on . I think it remains to be seen. If you had an employee who had these moments and, look, theyre all documented, right . So these are clear, documented moments of harassment, of at the very least questionable language, of being threatening, would look, i dont care about the performance of the employee, would they be fired if you had that kind of Paper Trail behind an employee . You know, if i were the human Resources Director in charge, they would be fired. Ive got a strong career. I write about this in my book. But unfortunately in many organizations, companies will look the other way or they will expect the two workers to come to a healthy compromise or productive solution as if they could do that by themselves. If they could do it, they would have done it already. So the question becomes are the leaders going to step in and tackle this. Will Kevin Mccarthy and Nancy Pelosi come to some sort of agreement about how to move forward . But youre right, ideally in any corporation across america, we would say this would never be tolerated. But, you know, thats not reality and its certainly not reality in congress. So then a quick final question to you here. If you are saying that a lot of companies would have the two employees work it out themselves, hopefully were not talking about some sort of Cage Fight here, but what would that we . Is that go into a Conference Room and talk . What would you expect that aoc and Marjorie Taylor Greene in a company might be told to do to work this out . Sure. Well, it is unfair to put this on someone like aoc whos really a victim of this, but companies do do this. So they will bring those two workers into a Conference Room with a mediator and help them either reach a healthy compromise where the two of them restore their relationship and try to figure out a way forward, or a productive solution, which is really the rules of the road on how theyre going to work together moving forward. So they may not feel good about one another, but there would be clear boundaries in place and they know what they would need to do. There would be some reassurance to the Aoc Figure that if this happens again, were on it. But again, weve had a year of employees going on Glass Door and Twitter And Facebook saying hr does Nothing And Hr is complicit. So it remains to be seen. This is a oneway street, by the way. Tell us what is going on and tell us about the condition he was in when he arrived. Well, india is a little stressed. Weve got a lot of people here right now, which hes not used to, so hes currently in his quarantine den. Once he will finish quarantine, hell be opened up into a Half Acre spacious naturally wooded habitat. Were so happy hes here. Hes doing well. Hes adjusting very well. And were just hopeful hell be here for the rest of his life. Understandable with the extra people and the extra focus on him that hes a little nervous right now, and its good to know that hell be moving to a bigger place with much more space. Carole, based on what youve seen and what you can see now with india in his condition, this feels like a happy ending. Yes . This is as happy an ending as you can have for a cat who was born in captivity because, unfortunately, no Cat Born in a cage can be set free. And people might be concerned about india being in quarantine, but the reason they do that is because most of these cats come with a huge Parasite Load because people dont know how to take care of them, so they have to make sure that they completely derid him of all of those kinds of parasites before he goes out into the grass. That is a very good point. Noelle, is that part of whats going on here . Absolutely. He will be isolated for 30 days just to make sure that hes not going to pass on anything to our other animals. We have a fulltime veterinary staff that will take excellent care of him. And noelle, tell us about the collar. This was a kind of Blingy Collar that india arrived in, studded with rhinestones. Tell us about this thing. Yeah. It was unfortunate. But when we transferred him to our caging we took the Collar Off of him. Hell never wear a collar again because hes not a pet, hes a wild animal and he deserves the dignity to live without a collar so we were happy to take that off. Carole, this is indicative of the larger issue and larger problem here. This is a tiger. These animals are not supposed to wear collars at all, let alone these blingy trophy things. I think it really does speak to what people have in mind when they have a tiger. They want to show off. They want to say look at me, pay attention to me, and they choose the most magnificent animal on the planet in order to show their dominion over that animal by forcing it to be walked on a leash and wear a collar. And i think its just one of the happiest things that we can do is to cut those collars off and tell that cat never, ever again are you going to be put through that. The attorney, noelle, victor Cuevas Attorney released video to the point of this cat wearing a collar, it shows cuevas playing with india like he is a dog. According to the attorney, india was potty trained. Maybe you can speak to that. And cuevas would actually sleep with the tiger at times. How dangerous is that type of behavior for a Tigers Caretaker and also for the cat himself . Its extremely dangerous. These are wild apex predators. You never know when theyre going to feel threatened, when theyre going to get scared, and they will react as a wild carnivore. They will defend themselves. And so while you see these videos of people playing with Big Cats and petting them and loving on them, yes, theyre beautiful creatures. But its not worth it to put The Public in risk to potentially hurt people because of these wild animals. Carole, you had offered a 5,000 reward for anyone with information leading authorities to find india. I guess it was Victor Cuevas wife, i think, who helped locate india ultimately. Are you going to give the reward to her . Well, i think its unclear as to who actually turned in the cat. Ive read conflicting reports that Gigi Cuevas turned in the cat and that some other person turned her in and then managed to get the cat turned over to the Animal Shelter who then turned it over to black beauty ranch. So my 5,000 reward is one that the cat go to an accredited sanctuary, check, they got that right. The other part was that they bring to justice the people involved in the Sale And Transfer of this cat, because i believe that there was illegal activity involved. I think thats why they have been hiding who has been involved in this. I want to know where was this Cat Born, who sold this cat to them nine months ago as they said they have had it for nine months. You know that they did not get it for free if they got it as a Newborn Cub because theyre valuable for the first 16 months when people can pimp them out.
