Farm workers, activism. Thats what we all witnessed in 2020, activism. People rising up to declare black Lives Matter day after day. Thats saying a lot. 2020 was the longest year in civil civilization. Oregon. Descended on the city in 2020. It turned into the battle for a soul of our nation. Democracy fundamental civil rights as americans. Portland, oregon. We have been here before. Remember . Gentrification. When you were a kid, they werent telling kumbucha on tap . That seems very portland. Embarrassingly portland, yeah. Whacky bike riding. Simpler times. The question is how did a city thats 70 white become the epicenter of 2020 black Lives Matter activism. Honestly, where else but portland . Portland is a bright Blue Dot in a state surrounded by red. Activists have been fighting here for years. Since way before it was cool. Add to that the killing of George Floyd and a President Set on making an example of liberal cities. We could take care of portland in 45 minutes. It is no surprise at all that portland became the epicenter of the blm movement. Yeah. Well do that. Groups like black Unity Pdx have been protesting in portland nightly since the killing of George Floyd. They want it all. Police defunded, wealth redistributed, all of it. This 19yearold is one of the founders. He has to worry about a Police Curfew and carols curfew. Who is carol . Xaviers mom. I lived in a predominantly white community my whole life except to prior to being adopted when i was five. It changed a lot with this black Lives Matter. Did i say it right . You used to say black live matter. Part of it is his black Lives Matter means so damn much to me. I apologize. Because i know im a good citizen but i dont think it was on my radar. So what led you to do all of that . Okay. Well whats happening . I just stepped into something. Im not sure. No, im just curious. Do you not know the answer to this . I feel like you know the answer. The reason why i say that is it is a big reason why i transferred colleagues. Im listening. So i went to college in the midwest. I had a lot of racist experiences. One of the examples was i was walking to a Theater Party and there was five guys all in trump masks fulling Water Balloons at me full of paint. I had to run. I was scared for my life. So after that, school already ended. I flew back home and George Floyd just died. So that really sparked the flame in me that change needs to happen and it needs to happen now. If youre paying attention, you would think they were getting ready for a Fun Night out. But this is serious. My address was posted online. Two guys came up to the door. There was Somebody Throwing Rocks at my window. Here . Yeah, here. I have been hit in the head with a baseball bat. I have been assaulted and Things Nobody should experience. And you keep going back. When the protest began in late may of 2020, protesters faced Portland Police. And on july 4th, federal agents came in. That was ten times worse. I remember the first night that i got gassed. The sensation is your throat starts to burn and then your sinuses start to burn and then your eyes start to burn. It hurts. The feds were so brutal. They were there to [ bleep ] us up. And they accomplished that. There has to be a better way than taking young kids and young adults and using chemical weapons on them. I shouldnt be going out there with Pepper Spray and a Baton Preaching that my life matters. I shouldnt have to do that. I really shouldnt have to do that. Thank you, mom. Thank you escalating Violence Kpefier and others encountered in 2020 was seen by many as a turning point. Not since the civil Rights Era had so many understood that the fight for black rights is a fight for all of our rights. What i saw was more than just erosion of first amendment rights. We started seeing due process rights. So another constitutional viol violation, which i think is a slippery slope. All of our constitutional rights are in jeopardy at that point. Like a lot of portlanders, Chris David only had a peripheral knowledge of what was going on in portland in the early days of the protest. As a white guy, he didnt really have to worry about the cops. But all that changed in July 2020 when after weeks of mostly people protests, Donald Trump flooded portland with federal agents who protect federal buildings, unquote. Who are you . What is going on . Many didnt wear badges and yanked protesters off the streets in the unmarked vans. We cannot have secret police abducting people. This is a democracy, not a dictatorship. This kind of violent federal deployment over the objection of state and federal officials is not something most of us are used to seeing in america and we shouldnt get used to it. What really pissed me off about that concept was it was desensitizing us to that concept of who is authority . Yes. As soon as we allow that kind of behavior, all bets are off. Right . I made a quip to my Exwife And Daughter that i was going to go down to the protest. They were so angry at me and said no. So i decided so put on all the Navy Gear i had. I put on this hat. I put on my naval Academy Sweatshirt and i dug out my really old battered backpack that had all of my navy patches on it. I was hoping the federal officers were also vets and they would give me pause. They would respect me long enough for me to ask the question why are you violating your Oath Of Office . You did not take an oath to a president. You took it to an idea, to a concept that is the underpinning of this entire country. I get downtown and it was peaceful. It was very celebratory. At 10 45, im like, okay, im tired. Thats when the feds started showing up. There was no warning to disperse at all. They just came out, and they started knocking them down like they were playing rugby or football. I mean hitting full blast. Body blows. One of the officers came in and plowed into me. Another dude came up and he levelled his Automatic Weapon at his chest from three feet away. Im just standing there. He could have killed me instantly. One round would have blown my heart apart. I started asking him, why are you violating your oath to the constitution . And then dude with the baton started whacking me all over the place. And he managed to break my hand. And i knew it immediately because it caused my finger to curl up like this. Another guy came up and hit me point break with Pepper Spray, which is like flaming gasoline from that distance. I rad to get to a part of the park that had less Tear Gas in it. I could barely see. In fact, i was completely losing my vision. I just collapsed on a park bench. Park bench, yeah. Thats when one of the Volunteer Street medics came to rescue. The medic got chris to the hospital where he got patched up and spent the night probably thinking, what the [ bleep ] just happened . It is ridiculous that veterans have to come out of the Wood Works in order to try to protect their fellow citizens from the depredations of our Law Enforcement officers in this country. The system is broken. It needs to be completely stripped down and rebuilt. Im talking about policing and Criminal Justice system. Which is exactly what xavier and black Unity Pdx are trying to call attention as they head out. Defund the Portland Police department. This is the Portland Police. Tear gas aint stopping me. Weve all seen before the police decided to turn up law and order. A little after midnight, xavier was struck by a cop with a baton and was sent to the hospital for a concussion. Another Sleepless Night for carol and a reminder of whats at stake in this time. Ready to talk antibrass haircolor . New excellence Cool Supreme antibrass haircolor by Loreal Paris. When we look at the history of Protest Movements in u. S. , we see a trend. Whether its first wave feminism, second wave feminism, several rights movement, me too movement, black women do a lot of the heavy lifting and other folks get a lot more of the credit. The same is true of black Lives Matter. It was founded by three black women, but black men and white women are often The Ones in the spotlight. It is wonderful to have White Allies. But if those White Allies are speaking for black people who have not asked them to do so, then thats problematic. Dr. Shirley jackson has spent years writing and teaching about race and social movements. One of the problems we see sometimes in the way people are looking at protests in portland, it is as though you are showing your blackness if you are out there supporting black Lives Matter, but thats not the only way to show your support. Uhhuh. It may be what some whites think that blacks should be doing, but thats just part of the problem. Yeah. Blacks should be determines what they want to do and how their activism should look. It should not be dictated by people who have a stereotype of black people or a stereotype of black activism. What is it, naked athena. Dont make me go there. That got a lot of attention from the national media, was on naked athena. It feels portlandiaish. Here is a white woman and her body becomes the focus of the press in a black Lives Matter movement, but black womens body, historically we have been objectified. For a white woman to say she is doing this in a way that somehow promotes black Lives Matter is simply lost on me. Today im visiting a center for Portland Activism and local support. Thank you for talking to me. Oh, youre welcome. Were talking to two women, one black, one white. Tell me about this place again. It is just a wonderful place for our community and its been in service for over ten years. Over ten years. So that predates even black Lives Matter. Of course. What im saying is a lot of people think these discussions happened recently. No. They have been happening so long. Im from memphis. Hey hey hey, sister. Let me let her in. In the midst of being an activist while you are having an interview. Three years ago she was the victim of a violent attack by a racist. Jeremy christian. Yep, thats his last name. He got on the train, doing what he do, with his hate and he through a Gatorade Bottle full of wine into my eye to the point that after four months still you could see the blackness in my eye. Christian attacked her on may 25th, 2017. But he wasnt arrested that night. Which meant the very next day he was available to fatally stab two men and injure a third after he was confronted for shouting racist and antimuslim slurs at two teenage black girls. After that, he was arrested and sentenced to prison. Every black person i know have lived through something like i went through. And thats why we fight. The fight intensified in the summer of 2020 when trump flooded portland with federal agents. Lots of new groups formed in response to violence of the ages. One that got the most attention. They both joined the group. There was a thing on facebook they posted up moms come out. Wear a yellow shirt. Im like, im a mom. All right. Theyre speaking my language. Yeah. But it was really unnerving because there was no structure. There was no organization. Like they have no idea. Were going up against the feds. They have no idea. They have their hair in their face and they have Bike Helmets and granola in your backpack. They were not ready. America loved the wall of mostly white moms. They became instant media darlings. But they brought something else to the surface. White allies getting credit for the work again. The mere fact that you had white women take these roles in a state of being leaders of this particular protest, putting themselves in between their Sons And Daughters and the federal authorities, it just simply erased the presence of black women. Behind the scenes, questions were being asked. Where were all the Black Moms in this wall . Because lets be real. Black Moms Deal with injustice at the hands of Law Enforcement way more than Black Moms do. Not just a woman of color. And that was initially started and then it fell through. It literally unravelled. Not unravelled. It exploded within 24 to 48 hours of that. Two weeks later the group had collapsed under the weight of its own weight privilege. She stepped away from wall of moms and formed a new group. Moms united for black lives. For me, what i have learned with the wall of moms, with working with demetria, you just take a seat. If you are going to come out and support a black lives, you listen to the black voices at a march. You follow the black leadership. You dont let a white voice take you off somewhere else. My last question would be like why are moms leading this . You answered the question. Because moms are thinking about all the levels of it. Thats what moms do. We have taken care of A Thousand different things while men are like, okay, i can just do five. And so thats why we do what we do, is because moms are going to get shit done. If you look at portland, thats anarchy. Portland, oregon in turmoil. Theyre burning, looting, and theyre being called peaceful protesters. So scary. My father was Ckconvinced Th an a antifa was burning down the city. My mother called me and asked if protesters were burning down the city. I was like, hold on a second. Nope, theyre not out there. Former chair of the Oregon Coalition against hate crime. Recently hes been studying extreme discourse around the blm movement. They also have this apocalyptic element to it, that america is about to collapse and Freedom Sbg taken away. There is this perception that portland is burning because it is not upholding american values, so thats being used by a lot of people on the extreme right. People go into a restaurant and the rioters come in and turn over their tables. They want to overthrow the Rule Of Law in america. Do you know what that means . Burning down cities and attacking and killing innocent americans. Yikes. There is a ticking time clock where the clock is ticking down. The picture thats presented to middle america is you are about to get portland in your backyard, so you need to do something now. So that is bringing people into The Movement. The way that we talk about this is this militia funnel, that on the top level of this funnel, there are a lot of mainstream issues to bring people into The Movement. Guns is a huge one. People are concerned about their second amendment rights. Mainstream white suburban anxiety. But you go to the next level and it becomes a hate for the federal government. You go down another level and it becomes all those Nicholas Cage movies like some secret conspiracy. Then you go down the next level, and it becomes an antisemitic conspiracy theory. Then you go down to the bottom of the funnel and it is the revolutionaries. This idea of this model, the more people we can bring in on mainstream issues, you can convince them to slide down to the bottom. So what we are seeing now is an acceleration of The Movement from the top to the bottom. Conservative media the driving more people than more into the funnel. Werent even around a few decades ago. It was once a domain of bring white national groups has increasingly infiltrated the mainstream of american political and culture discussion. Im willing to give my right for my life. And this can be dangerous consequences. Timmy mcvay and coconspirators killed 168 people. So what were looking at now is the threat of a lot of timothy mcvays. That is something that keeps me up at night. We will stop the steal. Only weeks before then president elect joe biden, white Supremacist Donald Trump supporters get everything, stormed and breached the u. S. Capitol. By night fall, five people were dead, including a police officer. So much for blue Lives Matter. As much as it would be easy for a president to condemn a coup on his own government. Nope. There was i give kating, hiding behind parliamentary procedure. They were masquerading as trump supporters and in fact were members of the violent terrorist group antifa. Some tried to compare this to this. Lets be clear. This is activism. This is terrorism. How is it that protesters peacefully saying that cops shouldnt kill black people and people taking over the capitol get reprimanded and asked to leave. Thats white confused im sorry, quite confusing. We all know what would happen if that were black and brown folks crashing down those steps. Im cologuard. Black Lives Matter in 2020 many white americans dealt with complicated feelings about the police for the first time. The right wing saw that and they do what they do, returned to the old boogieman, antifa. It was an easy idea to sell to people blue Lives Matter. As we learned last season, antifa is short for antifascist. Picture a table. On one side is hitler and mussolini. On the other side is rappy. So join me at my weekly antifa meeting. Oh, tucker is going to be so mad. Hello. Hello. Thank you for coming to this totally normal situation. Thank you for joining us totally normal looking people. Yes. I think a lot of people have done a lot of work to say antifa is not a group. Its an ideology. It is an analogy like knitters. You can be someone thats in a Nitting Club and you can call yourself someone that knits but not engage with any other group of people that are interested in knitting. Thats the best analogy i have ever heard. So lets talk about the other side because a lot of things that antifa is identified with a violence. We are all from portland, and were defending our community. I think whats often left out is that groups like the proud boys are coming in to portland from across the state and the country to commit violence here on our city streets. Antifa antifa. Antifa and if we werent out there putting our bodies on the line, they find people who are weaker than them and pick on them. This fighting for democracy and against Fascism Thing has always been a messy business. And, yes, you will get hurt. Property gets damaged and things get confusing. While america loves to celebrate mlk, america loves to forget he was assassinated from some violence at the young age of 39. While were talking about black icons, im betting Malcolm X would have loved to see confronts white supremacy like this. Antifa doesnt just take on work in the streets. The vast amount of work we do is doing research and trying to identify people on the internet saying violent, racist, disgusting things that they feel empowered to say because theyre anonus and on the internet and try to connect that with a real Life Person so people around them know who theyre talking to. There are social repercussions for being a neonazi. Your inlaws might not want you over for thanksgiving over. Your boss might not want you at your company. And how do you put that into the world . We have a website. Oh, okay. Twitter. Or linkedin, okay. We can make Someones Life a little bit harder by publishing their job and hoping they get fired or have to find a new job. But those are temporary setbacks for them that make their organizing harder, and their organizing is work that intends to commit genocidal violence. So in The Grand Scheme of things, we think thats worth it. What do you say we tear it all down and found it on antifascism. What does that sound like . Antif we were to achieve all our goals, our organization would not need to exist because fascism would not exist. That is the ultimate goal is ultimately the end of fascism and great things come after that. Yeah. I would love to take up knitting. Yels, absolutely. Completely. Unilever well, thank you for being here this morning and taking the time to great the sun. You might be surprised to know the majority of indigenous people in this country live in cities. Yet, whenever we talk about the social movements that explode in cities across the country, we dont talk about native people being a part of that, and they are. The ancestors that used to be here and that walk this land are right there with you every single day. How do the three of you know Each Other . I have known her as long as i can cognitively remember. When people were relocated to the urban areas, they sort of built family that way. Yeah. We just come together. We dont know why, but it feels right. It feels good. You dont meet. You become. Laura john, a decent dent of the Senica Natures are part of the sunrise ceremony. This is a time of truth telling. This is a time of change. The ceremonies began in the summer of 2020 as a way for the native american community to show support for the blm movement. The history is right now and were part of a continuum. I think there is just a weirdly in america The One thing the system, the white man, i can say the white man here you can say it anywhere. Thats true. Thats true. Thats true. Thank you for the reminder. The white man does a good job of dividing people of color against Each Other. Certainly blacks and native folks. There seems like there would be a natural alliance, but it doesnt always feel that way. Im born and raised here as well. My family was not culturally connected. I lived in like a black culture. There was a lot of similarities, but we were never taught that shit. Sorry. You can say shit. If i can say white man, you can say shit. The system didnt accidentally decide to oppress was all. Some of our original people were taken back to europe as slaves. And, so, we know that history. We know the history of African Slaves who were brought over and who ran away and hid amongst our triable populations. And we know the history of mostly africanamerican folks but also native folks being hung for god forbid they pulled themselves up on their own boot straps. We have experienced that type of thing. So we have that solidarity. If you talk to any other tribe, they will tell you this is sacred land to our people here in portland. The group chose Delta Park as the location because it is sacred land of the tribes and also because it is a symbol of the trauma shared by black folks and indigenous folks. See, this is where a massive wartime Housing Project used to be during World War ii. Vanport was a place where during the war, a lot of people, mostly black folks, but native folks as well, housing was built for workers. And then the floods came. And literally within hours. People lost anything that they may have had. They were just sort of left on their own to get it figured out after that. Of course that place was never rebuilt because they didnt need those workers anymore. And america repeats that cycle of natural disasters happening and affecting black folks, indigenous folks and people of color that get hit the hardest. Black people have never returned to New Orleans the way that we were before katrina. No one else has our back, so we have to have Each Others. Im going to share the love for my black brothers and sisters. If you look back on history, when the Black Panthers came together with the American Indian Movement in portland and elsewhere, that was a major threat, and it needed to be broken up right away. Yeah. During the civil rights movement, Thattive American Tribes joined The Movement. While the fbi was quick to target and disrupt this alliance, the seeds for future alliances had been planted. So we have this opportunity to pick up where our parents and for some younger folks their grandparents were. Yeah. During the civil rights movement. Continue it on. Its absolutely necessary that we come together in Critical Mass and say this is wrong. We need to change it. It isnt just two cultures were talking about. Were talking about everybodys culture. You dont just see black people at these protests. You see white people, asian people, native people. Were not talking about what were going to do to figure this out. Were talking about what can we do to put this together. Does it feel different what you know about this country . Yeah. Sometimes i have to ask the dumb questions so you can give a good answer. Of course. I think there is sort of this relentlessness about it. I was thinking about it a lot and thinking personally as a legislature, dont stop now because if you give up this energy right now, nothing will change. So the momentum is absolutely necessary right now. And the energy is different because more and more people than maybe we have been experiencing in a very long time are finally going, oh, wow, really. Because for 8 minutes and 46 seconds they had to watch. They had to watch the reality of black people in america. And the fact that they could not turn away and could no longer deny what was happening here. Thats why this is different. So i need you folks to come around in a circle here. These activists have been Community Leaders and organizers in portland for decades. Randal runs his nonprofit taking ownership pdx. We repair and renovate blackowned homes and businesses and Build Equity and raise property values. And he has been advocating for Police Reform since trayvon ma martin. We value life. Thats why were here. I thought when all the protests started, it is time to get back to work. We started streaming and talking about the protests. Talking about the protests. It is a lot of writing and being out there at night. Thanks to trump and his fake news, covering protests in 2020 turned out to be dangerous. People trying to document the protest have come out. Freelancers, live streamers and reporters with years of experience have all gotten Tear Gas, beaten and shot at with rubber bullets. I got shot in my face wearing a press helmet. I was 30 yards away walking through a park editing a picture i had just taken and they shot me across the street. I dont know who shot me. It could be anybody. This is real. Maybe live stream, and i have to wear a ballistic helmet. Thats really where were at. Were talking about something that many americans associate with Third World countries or dictatorships and its happening here. This is really a situation where we have people that dont live here beating us up because we want a change in our local budget. The cops dont live here. The sheriffs dont live here. The feds dont live here. None of them care about us. They want whats best for them. And we are telling them whats best for us, and they respond with violence. You grow things from the earth. You grow everything from the bottom up. We have to reinvest in our communities and take care of Each Other, take care of homeowners and take care of black people, take care of indigenous people. I hope people understand it does take a village. What you are not going to see is black people getting happier because the protests are over or the election is done and biden is the president. Thats not going to change anything. If you take better care of people from birth like give parents child care, give kids good schools, make sure kids are fed, you dont have to worry about as many there is not unrest. We can either keep on spending Money Fixing Problems after they happen, or we can invest in the soil and get this thing started. America has two places where things get better, in the courtroom and in the streets. It is often a combo of both. We either get laws changed or new names. This is how Democracy In America as always worked. While the current battle is about backlack lives, at this pt in time were fighting for our whole identity, fighting to protect our fundamental rights as americans, to rise up, to protest and to demand change. If those Rights Slip through our fingers, then thats the end of this whole democracy came as we know it. As Fed Rick Douglas said, power concedes nothing without demand.
