The Associated Press put out a strong statement, saying this, quote, were shocked and horrified the Israeli Military would target and destroy the building, housing aps, Associated Press bureaus, and other News Organizations in gaza. They have long known the location of our bureau and knew journalists were there. And it continues to say, quote, this is an incredibly disturbing development. We narrowly avoided a terrible loss of life. The world will know less about whats happening in gaza because of what happened today. So it is the latest in the week of escalating conflict. Palestinian officials say 139 people have been killed in gaza this week, with another thousandplus wounded. At the same time, a barrage of rocketfire from hamas continues. The Israeli Military says at least eight civilians have been killed. With us now Nic Robertson near the israeligaza border. Nic, it sounds a little quieter than the last hour we talked to you and there were rockets overhead that were intercepted by the iron dome. But tell us what has transpired the last hour . There have been some more intercepts in the past hour. I heard some explosions about a minute or so ago in the distance. So the threat from hamas to respond to the downing of that media building, Media Housing in al jazeera, associated president , al jazeera, hamas response to that, is to say they will target Tel Aviv with rockets. They targeted it earlier in the day. Sirens had gone off there. Several rockets and israeli man, 50yearold man, was killed on The Street in a town very close to Tel Aviv when one of those rockets came down that wasnt caught by the iron dome. But the Israeli Defense Forces are making no excuses for that building. They gave more than an Hours Notice and theyre saying the associated Press Building that also houses al jazeera, theyre saying very clearly that they had tactical military reasons to target it. They say that hamas had Military Instillations in that building that were connected to hamas military intelligence wing. They also said in previous statements they are aware hamas colocated its equipment and people in and around civilians. Thats a very clear statement there. Nevertheless, what the Associated Press is saying, this will give the rest of the world less scope of understanding of whats happening inside gaza. That is a very strong statement. The Associated Press also say theyve reached out to israeli officials to understand more about why this building was targeted. And arlette at the White House, what kind of response is coming out of the White House . Fred, this is a situation that the White House is certainly monitoring very closely. Im told President Biden has been working out of the Oval Office this morning. The White House is also holding me meetings over the course of this weekend, specifically on the issue regarding the tensions in israel and also other meetings regarding to the president s infrastructure push. But a few hours ago, the white House Press Secretary sent out a tweet. I want to read you what she said. She said, we have communicated directly to the israelis that ensuring the Safety And Security of journalists and independent media is a paramount responsibility. This comes after that Air Strike flattened that building in gaza that housed some media outlets. But what we are waiting to hear from this White House right now is what further engagement they have made with israeli officials and other officials in the region. We know that President Biden broke sprioke directly with israeli prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier in the week. The White House believes he can help in these conversations behind the scenes. There have also been other top officials within the administration reaching out not just to the israelis but also the various counterparts in those regions as they are trying to address these escalating tensions in israel. Now, one thing that you have seen from progressive members of the president s own party is they are really pushing him to take a more forceful stance against some of these actions taken by israel. But for the time being, what the White House has been saying is theyre working to try to deescalate the situation on the ground, as these tensions continue to rise. New Cdc Guidance said people fully vaccinated can do just about anything without wearing a mask. Thats welcome news for the 120 Million americans who have gotten all of their shots. S and now many states and businesses are jumping on board. More than a dozen states and District Of Columbia are dropping Mask Mandates. Places like walmart and starbucks and others are also dropping Match Requirements in their stores for those fully vaccinated. Still many questions do remain. School districts across the country are still trying to decide how and when to reopen. Dr. Anthony fauci says students should return to the classroom but offered this caveat the school should be open, Face To face, inperson classes in the fall. We absolutely have to do that. And in those situations, if the child, which obviously Elementary School kids are not vaccinated, they should wear a mask. And now the Fda And Cdc authorizing the Pfizer Vaccine for the use in children ages 12 to 15. What do you make of the timing of this announcement and what potential challenges do you see for americans in the wake of this news . Well, i think its really welcome news, and it felt really important, you know, fred to hear this news. But it was also somewhat surprising in that it came so abruptly and, frankly, a little early, i think. I welcome this news. I want to make it clear. I think its been a tough 14, 15 months. I think what the databasically shows and informed the cdcs decision, the cases have dropped, and weve seen that over the past few weeks. In the begin, is this a blip or a trend . Its clearly a trend. And then the study came out of israel, fred, where they showed you not only is the vaccine good at preventing you from getting sick, its also good at preventing you from getting infected, developing asymptomatic infections. Thats a situation where someone got vaccinated and came back positive. I came back positive on the test. I was surprised by that. That can happen but it doesnt happen often. And another bit of science that came out over the past couple of weeks that even after you become infected after vaccination, the likelihood you can then spread that to somebody else is really, really low. That was i think sort of pushed the cdc over the edge. Yes, we realize Breakthrough Neks Infections can happen but weve been telling people to wear a mask even after youre vaccinated to prevent it from spreading to someone else. Now we know based on the data the chances of this happening is low. Thats why theyre saying for vaccinated people masking essentially is not really necessary. I also want to ask you about vaccines for children and the plea by the World Health Organization not to move to vaccine healthy children ages 2 to 11 because so many countries are in desperate need of vaccine. What is your understanding of that . This is an issue where science and ethics really collide. So in a perfect world, you would say, look, we understand who is most vulnerable to this disease. People over a certain age and people of preexisting conditions. And in a perfect world, you would say look, anywhere you live in the world, you should be able to be prioritized if you fall into those groups. We know thats not whats happened, 81 , i believe, of vaccines have gone to wealthy countries and less than a percent to some of these low and some low middle income countries. So obviously, thats a very disparate approach to this as well. I think what the united states has chosen to do from a foreign Policy Perspective is say were going to donate a lot of money to covax, which is creating vaccines for the rest of the world, were going to donate vaccines, like astrazeneca vaccine, they brought a lot in this country, its not authorized in this country, so theyre starting to give that vaccine away to other countries. But i talked to an Edge Aist about this and this is the analogy he used, fred, which is kind of like the oxygen on airplanes. When youre flying and the masks come down, what do they tell you to do . Put your own mask on first, and then help others. I think thats a little bit of the approach here. We got to make sure were in the best position we can to help other countries and thats why theyre distributing the vaccine so rapidly here. Theres going to be a lot of vaccine. And someone with a lot of extended family in india, i can tell you those vaccines are really necessary, they are very necessary there. So i hope the Vaccine Supply can be increased. While Colonial Pipeline did say while they are resuming normal operations, operations are normal as of today, it is going to take some time to feel that normalcy at the pump because, as you can imagine, this pipeline, the fuel flowing through it is going about 5 miles per hour, the trucks need to deliver all of this. This is going to require patience from some people for perhaps several days, for perhaps a week or two. Its actually going to be really kind of tough to rein in Marjorie Taylor Greene. Because democrats have used their most powerful weapon already, which is removing her from her two committees. So unless theres some sort of crime committed or whatever, shes in congress without those committees and she can continue to do the procedural tactics of making votes last longer, she can continue to run after oscasiocortez. There is the house Ethics Committee which oscasiocortez raised but thats sort of twoflipped. There is a censor, they can but that would require republicans to side with them which they would not, i doubt, unless there was serious behavior. At the moment we are seeing kevin mccarthy, the gop leader, is all but likely not going to be reining in Marjorie Taylor Greene. He doesnt have a confrontational style. Basically, were probably going to see more and more antics from her. One thing i want to highlight is, i had a Protrump House Republican mentioning to me how she fundraised 3. 2 million in her first three months alone. That is a significant number. But she raised that off of being kicked off her committees and they dont expect her to raise that much again. So having these videos of her chasing down one of the most prominent progressives in the house and saying, you need to debate me, which is not typical, you will see debates in hearings, on the House Floor but not right at theyre working onto the House Floor. She can fundraise off of that. So this might be one of those tactics, shes done it before, thats how she kind of gained her name as being this inperson troll who records things and we are seeing that now in the u. S. Capitol. So, rachel, while she may have been able to fundraise, you know, after being kicked off the committees, this kind of behavior, why would anybody within the gop really embrace it . Why would they feel like they could further benefit from greenes approach, especially when youve got video like that, which is who would dispute that as being anything but unsavory . I mean, look, we know that theres a record of republicans and gop that very much likes this still. Thats why trump was elected president in 2016 and continuing to maintain even a popular status with his own party. I think olivia is exactly right about kevin mccarthy. Hes the only one who can do something about this. Democrats tried to kick her off her committees would you see him doing that, mccarthy doing that . You know, he just ousted Liz Cheney from leadership so, obviously theres going to be pressure on him to have some sort of response to this. Silence and not doing anything is just not going to work in this situation. It just looks too hypocritical, right . In terms of committee, shes been kicked off. They can try to do something like a censure but she will just raise money off of it. This will have to come from mccarthy. If he doesnt do something, his own members will be frustrated. They dont want to be talking about this, about Marjorie Taylor Greene, they want to talk about biden. They want to flip the house. They want to talk about policy. And this is a distraction about what theyre trying to discuss in their effort to take the house. So he might actually step in. Im not enshirely sure if he will but we will see next week and hes the only one would can actually do anything about this. And now all of this taking place while heres the backdrop, cdc saying its okay for vaccinated americans to stop wearing masks in most situations, if you are vaccinated. But this also comes after cnn conducting a Survey Find a big partisan disparity exists on Capitol Hill of lawmakers who are vaccinated. In the house 100 of democrats say theyve been vaccinated against covid19 but just 44 of House Republicans admit to getting vaccinated. In the senate, the margin is a bit closer, where 100 of all democratic senators say they are vaccinated, versus 92 of senate republicans. So, olivia, what is the message that House Republicans in particular are trying to send by virtue of their own Behavior And Approach to vaccinations . Well, its certainly interesting. I was reading that survey, theres already a hesitancy among republicans in the base to get the vaccination. What youre seeing is some excuses of, well, this is personal information. Or this is i had the antibodies. Or they just arent responding to requests about whether they have been vaccinated, which might just be a political move to appease a base that is, you know, taking a stance on vaccinations in a political way when it shouldnt be. So it really is there might be various different factors but i think the numbers almost speak for themselves. You have 100 democrats saying theyre vaccinated and you only have less than 50 of republicans. Thats not to say there arent some republicans out there trying to get out the message. Theres mitch mcconnell, who had polio, and hes a very provaccination person telling the senate he wants everyone to get the vaccination. And theres also some weve seen in the house who have been out in their districts vaccinating constituents. But the message should be loud and proud from republicans, who instead of being quiet about it. I wonder, rachel, when you talk to people, is there a feeling on Capitol Hill of folks feeling safe . Are they particularly concerned because of that kind of disparity in numbers . Well, look, i think that thats why youre going to see a lot of democrats continuing to wear masks. I mean, unfortunately, what this does is it creates a situation where people who dont want to get vaccinated and dont want to wear masks, the change in the guidelines from the cdc, means a lot of times the people who will be taking off their mask and are not vaccinated, the people who should be wearing them. But this is early science. If youre vaccinated, could you still have something on your body when you go home and run into somebody not vaccinated, can you carry something . I know its a lot more unlikely that you cant but still there are fears. Thats why you will see a lot of democrats wearing masks on The Hill as a lot of republicans are not vaccinated. Unfortunately its going to turn into sort of a culture war. You can already see Marjorie Taylor Greenes staffer going after a lawmaker, which rarely happens on Capitol Hill, over wearing a mask 6789 you will see more republicans attacking democrats for wearing masks when they dont need to. Obviously if you have people who are not completely vaccinated, folks are not safe yet. So its going to create that culture war. Already happening, already happening, right . For now with the cdc guidelines on the masks, you know, you have stores in connecticut, New York and new jersey. Right. How are you treating this Cdc Guidance . What are you going to be requiring of your customers and of your employees as it pertains to being vaccinated, wearing a mask, not wearing a mask . You know what, thats the question im asking our customers on the floor right now. Yeah . I think the overwhelming majority of people say they want to make their own personal choice. We were very quick to implement a lot of dr. Faucis recommendations at the very beginning of covid, and we want to be very slow at relaxing them right now. Some people are still uncomfortable. I was just down in dallas, and they really dont wear masks almost down there. Right. Its a different thing. So were going to take it day by day and listen to our customers. Does that mean you still have a sign up say on the outside of your door saying masks required or something to that effect . No, i dont want to go that far but we did take down the sign that says masks required, because what do we do know if walmart, trader joes, costco, publix, they all have a nomask policy, you know, a lot of our customers are still a little uncomfortable walking through the store with no masks. So all of our team members, we have 2,500 team members, theyre all required to wear masks right now. Were not going to throw people out of the store if they come in with no masks. Were just going to monitor this day by day now. I got you. You dont want to chase away your customers. Lets talk about the inflation, the issue of Supply And Demand. United food and commercial workers, the union that represents over A Million Essential Food and retail workers, has raised concerns about the guidance, the Cdc Guidance, saying that a lot of Frontline Workers will have to play vaccination police. Are your employees feeling that . Well, i really dont want to try to be a policeman here. I really want to let families and everybody make their own decisions on what they want to do. I just met a guy in the store right now, he had a Heart Condition and he wants to wear a mask. Youre not going to change him. I think we have a lot of people commuting into New York city. I think you will see, just like in japan and asia, a lot more people, you know, with masks on on mass transportation. I think it has to be a persons personal choice right now. Okay. Got a little ahead of myself. According to the Consumer Price in index released wednesday, Consumer Prices rose 4. 2 from a year ago and thats the biggest 12month increase since september 2008. That explains why you feel like theres a Repeat Episode of what you experienced the last year. What are your concerns . How do you navigate this spike in prices . Well, we are always we do a lot of fresh food at Stew Leonards so were used to riding the Supply And Demand all the time. I have been on the phone all week with ranchers and farmers and fishermen. They all say the same thing, they put hundreds of gallons of gas in their lobster boats, Fishing Boats and thats up 1 a gallon now. And these are just american family farmers. Even our Dairy Farmers right now, cows eat a lot of corn every day, 40 to 50 pounds. Thats doubled in price. Were exporting a lot to china and the price of corn doubled. What do we tell our great supplies that have been with me through the pandemic, they always said, stew, we have your back. Our shelves were never empty. In one of americas biggest cities, a tiger known by the name india, has been On The Run for nearly a week and still no sighting. Houston police caught the man seen coaxing the cat away in this video. He, who is being identified as victor cuevas, was actually out on bond for Murder Charges. Cnns Rosa Flores has been following this story. Rosa, have you seen the tiger . I have not, but i hope at some point we do, fredericka. You know, the Houston Police department is the investigating agency here. They say that they have received hundreds of phone calls, some of them tips, some of them alleged sightings of this tiger and investigators have been following every single lead but still no sight of this tiger. As for the man that is linked to this missing tiger, 26yearold cuevas, his attorney releasing Pictures Yesterday describing how he interacted with this tiger more like a Pet Dog or pet cat, like a dpomesticated anima. Cuevas was in Court Yesterday for a Bond Revocation Hearing on a Murder Charge out of ft. Bend county. And that hearing quickly turned more into a dramatic Secondbysecond Account about what happened sunday when the tiger went missing. There was testimony included in this hearing from the offduty deputy. This is the man you saw in the viral video that was pointing the gun at the tiger. This officer says his encounter with the tiger lasted for about ten minutes. He described those moments saying he was trying to have this tiger focused on him, fredericka, so that he could have some control of the situation. Of course, that tiger was then placed into a vehicle, according to police, and then cuevas, according to police drove off. Cuevas said he took the tiger to its rightful owner and his attorney is adamant he does not own this tiger and hes cooperating with authorities. Wow. Rosa, while youre talking, i mean, were all captivated by the newer images that are coming in of this victor cuevas, who is playing like its his House Cat or puppy, seemingly inside the residence.
