But some experts have raised concerns about the new guidance, in part because Vaccine Hesitancy remains a barrier to achieving that goal of herd immunity. Nearly every state has ended or plans to soon end mask mandates. And while a growing number of retailers are telling customers they can leave the masks behind, unions representing Grocery Store workers and retail workers argue their members will now be forced to have been vaccine police. Cnns Polo Sandoval joining us now. The new Masks Step and the pandemic is far from over. And a lot of questions over whether the cdc is moving too fast. Now we have developments like the first 12yearolds getting those Covid19 Vaccines and new the cdc Stepping Out and saying americans can remove their mask indoors. And it looks like the Fall Semester this coming School Year will resemble more of a prepandemic year. Reporter singling things can return to normal on friday in the u. S. The day after the cdc said it is safe to fully vaccinated to remove their masks. People feel, that they should based on data, its sa safe for them, not only indoors but outdoors, they could feel comfortable in not wearing a mask. Reporter Gretchen Whitmer said that states will lift its Mask Requirement for fully vaccinated people. Several steps have taken that step, maryland, new mexico, and virginia on thursday. That is after the cdc on thursday saying fully vaccinated people no longer to keep their distance outside their household. Retailers followed suit, walmart, sams club, Costco And Trader joes announced they are no longer required to wear masks. And fully vaccinated customers will not be required to wear face masks in their stores. Starbucks will make facial coverings optional for customers starting on monday the company posted on their website late friday. The cdc trying to make things less confusing with this new list of mask guidelines. Theres at least one group still scrambling for answers. Parents of kids younger than 12. Children and educators should expect to return to school and in person for full time in the fall thats according to rochelle walensky. And children not vaccinated should still wear masks in the fall. What hasnt changed is whats going on for the unvaccinated group. And if the unvaccinated group of the Elementary School Children Nothing has changed for them. I think thats the thing we need to clarify. Reporter now, along with the rollout of that revised guidance from the cdc, that agency also announcing it would no longer be tracking some of those mild or asymptomatic breakthrough cases if thats where the infections happen after people get vaccinated. You tweeted out about the underlying strategy with the cdc lifting the restrictions. Theyre offering an incentive, if you want to ditch your mask indoors you can but you have to get unvaccinated. The problem comes when the unvaccinated lie. How do you screen for that . Thats right, boris. The real issue how do you make sure that people are committed to the solution which is, of course, getting a vaccination and thats hard. What the cdc is doing here, of course, the biden administration has distanced themselves from any Vax 19 verification a while ago, what the cdc is doing is pushing the Vaccine Verification on institutions. Theyre assuming that institutions are saying, look, if were allowing people to go without masks that are vaccinated, then were we have to allow our place of business to be a place where they may be transmissed. So pushing those institutions to have some sort of verification is part of the strategy that goes unsaid here and how to do that is a little difficult. The other challenge here is while idol believe its the Cdcs Recommendation that does follow the science, it has taken a lot of folks by surprise. They didnt really foreshadow that at all. Because of that, i think folks in a lot of institutions are now scrambling. How do we make sure that people who are maskless really are vaccinated. Well, i wanted to ask, doctor, with these institutions that are essentially now carrying this burden of verifying vaccines, how do you respond to those institutions that say they dont want to be the socalled Vaccine Release . At this point, you really cant. And i think Thats Part of the challenge of this approach that the cdc took. And the idea here is, if enough institutions, people who are unvaccinated and remain unvaccinated want to be a part of do in fact impose some sort of Verification Process that will create a societywide incentive to push vaccinations. We dont know if thats going to take hold. The other challenge that polo rightly mentioned in his report is, well, i have a 3yearold kid. My kid is obviously not vaccinated. He and my wife are. But my kid is going to do the things that me and my wife do. At the same time, we dont want to set a bad example for our daughter so what do we do there . One of the circumstances, my daughter says, you guys arent wearing one, i dont want to wear one, its kind of hard explaining it to a 3yearold. What do we do in those circumstances . Thats another challenge. I wish you good luck on that end. If people have been resistant to comply with mask mandates, how do you think Theyll Respond having to verify theyve taken a vaccine. Theres been a lot of pushback with This Quote Unquote Vaccine Spapassports has been a fire firestorm. I think whats going to happen, a lot of private institutions say, listen, we want to make sure were keeping everybody safe. Were going to require for everybody to come back into work or come into youre establishment or our Store Or Theme park, you have to show us youre vaccinated. If that happens, and it becomes a norm, there will be pushback of course, and in The End, if you create enough incentive for people to be vaccinated they had will do so. The It Rocks to the benefit, of course, for them, but society at large. At The End, we want to look back in the rear view at this pandemic, not be in this situation where, of course, we put the masks back on because not a lot of people got vaccinated. Well, the good news here is the vaccines we have on board with the known variants circulating. This is why it is so critical that we see ourselves as part of a global pandemic here. And why weve got people in Brazil And India and other parts of the real that are really struggling. Its got to be, of course, for humanitarian purposes that people are getting vaccinated. But also for our own purposes that they are not left liable to be infected and to be a unitas for the variant. An interview with our colleague Jake Tapper, cheney said theres a fight to save the gop. And that many republicans are a afraid of speaking out against trump. I also think that we have more members who believe in Substance And Policy and ideals than are willing to say so. And in some cases, if you look at the vote to impeach, for example, there were members who told me that they were afraid for their own security. Afraid, in some instances for their lives. Congresswoman cheney was just one of ten house republicans who voted to impeach then President Trump in his role in inciting the Capitol Hill attack. And now theres a disturbing trend among some house republicans to downplay or even deny the violence we all saw with our very eneyes on january 6th. And this attempt to rewrite history is adding a new urgency for an independent commission to set in stone the facts of that day. Yeah. Were expecting the commission to approve a tenmember panel, half approved by leaders including the chair. And half by republicans including a Vice Chair. They have the power to sign off. An update for you on Say Case that complicates Congressman Matt Gaetz. A close confidant of gates has struck a deal over Sex Trafficking charges. Joel greenberg plans to plead guilty on six separate charges including Sex Trafficking of a child. Gaetz has yet to be charged in the investigation and denies he did anything wrong. But cnns Paula Reid has more on why this latest development could be trouble for the florida lawmaker. Reporter well, good morning, boris and amara. Joel greenberg, the former Florida Tax Collector has struck a deal with prosecutors where he agrees to cooperate fully with them and plead guilty to six criminal charges including Sex Trafficking of a minor. As part of this Plea Agreement, he admits to having sex with the minor at least seven times while she was under age. Greenbergs close associate Congressman Matt Gaetz is not mentioned at all. In this 80page Plea Agreement, Congressman Gaetz has not been charged with a crime and hes denied any wrongdoing. But cnn has learned the congressman is under federal investigation, allegations of prostitution, Sex Trafficking and possibly having sex with a minor. And as part of this agreement, Greenberg Has Sa agreed to cooperate in any ongoing federal investigations. And one of the most important lines from this Plea Agreement is where greenberg plans to admit in court that he introduced a child to other Adult Men who engaged in commercial sex acts with the minor. Depending on who he exactly refers to in that sentence that could potentially be problematic for Congressman Gaetz.
