Language that we know sparked that violence and the claims hes making to undermine our democracy have made him unfit for option. I dont think he should be leader of the party and its important for us as republicans to stand for the truth and stand for the constitution. Youre not unified i think its fair to say. I think theres very big issues we need to grapple with and we need to be get back to a position where we can convey to people how important it is to come together around a set of principles. I do think that the policies that President Biden and Speaker Pelosi are proposing is misguised and harmful for the country and for leadership to be in a position to stop the policies, we need to tell people you can trust us and trust us around to Ittive Principles and dispel the lie. Ive been listening to you since this Campaign Began and one thing that the media and public are missing, and you said this the other day. This isnt just about the past, this isnt just about the lie before the insurrection and the lie since the insurrection. It sounds to me like youre saying that trump tried to steal the election once and he and his supporters and acolytes are going to try to do it again. Well, i think he is currently attempting to convince people that the election was stolen. He uses it was rigged. Every day now we see another release out from him and its really dangerous. What it does it undermines peoples confidence in our system and ultimately weve got to have respect for the rule of law. We had 60 state and federal courts that heard his claims, rejected those claims. The Electoral College met. Thats the end of it. Now, of course in this instance it wasnt. Weve seen what hes capable of and he hasnt expressed any remorse or regret for january 6th and its important for people to understand the ongoing danger of a former president trying to undermine the system the way he is. As republicans we have a particular responsibility to stand up against that. Are you going to worry that hes going to try in to 24 and try to purge people like you and Secretary Of State raffensperger in georgia and that hell succeed . He might try but he wont succeed. What weve seen is Secretary Of State raffensperger is a good example of the local officials refusing to give in when President Trump was trying to pressure them and i think weve seen how important it is that the role have individuals is and our system held, the institutions held and theres an ongoing danger and we need to stand up against it. The system held and held in our view because we had 15 to 20 republicans with integrity from arizona to georgia from michigan and philadelphia to pennsylvania, pat toomey, standing there and saying thats not true, but if theres an effort to replace them, let me give you this hypothetical. What if Kevin Mccarthy had been speaker in january. Do you have confidence that a Speaker Mccarthy would have upheld the rule of law, the constitution and voted to have those electors be counted, or do you worry that a Speaker Mccarthy would have bent to the will of donald trump and no upheld his constitutional duty . You know, i think what we have seen and the democrats objectsed also if i believe 2000 and 2004. They also objected. Its not only republicans who have objected. Not a real effort to undermine the objection. There should not be objections. The Congress Role is ministerial. If you have a slate of electors certified by a governor then those votes must be counted so i think that nobody should be in a position, you know, and you can look at senators as well, nobody should have been in a position where they were playing a political game or where they were objecting to those electors and certainly not because they were trying to please, you know, then President Trump. Do you have confidence that if mccarthy had been speaker he would have done the right thing . You know, i think i have to judge people on their actions, and certainly, certainly after the attack and after we were evacuated and back in the chamber i think the approach that leader mcconnell took in terms of, you know, saying this is were not doing this, thats what we should have done on our side and thats not what happened on our side. Judging people by their action, im judging leader mccarthy about his actions. He lied about the election immediately after the election was called on fox and said that donald trump won in a landslide and he siped on to the Deranged Texas lawsuit that was thrown out the window and he also voted to disenfranchise the voters of arizona and pennsylvania so i am judging him by his actions and as someone who has a lot of loved ones in pennsylvania i worry what he would have done. I think thats a legitimate concern. I think ive been very concerned. I think ive been very clear that ive disagreed with the way hes led the conference and when were in elected positions and Leadership Positions we have an obligation to the constitution and have an obligation to lead with principle. Do you think hes complicit in the insurrection . I think that thats not something i would say. Youve got criminal investigations under way and sound like weve got a bipartisan agreement on a commission, and i think we will get to a bottom of understanding exactly what happened. Kevin mccarthy, you talk about this bipartisan agreement which just today we learned there is a bipartisan deal. Pelosi didnt want it to be 50 50. Its going to be five democrats, five republicans. Pelosi has said shows going to bring it to the floor of the house. Youre a Strong Pelosi critic and she has signed on to this. Kevin mccarthy hasnt signed on to this. Do you think its afraid because hes going to be subpoenaed . His views are clear. He thinks it should focus on blm and antifalast summer. I think one of the places where we very much have a difference of opinion is ive said, no, thats not right that. This commission really needs to be bipartisan, equal numbers of republicans and democrats and that it needs to focus on january 6th. If you look at our history and you look at what we did after pearl harbor and after the kennedy assassination, after 9 11, we have to have this kind of a Factfinding Commission with Subpoena Power and it ought to be focused just on january 6th and the events that led up to the attack. I want to play for our viewers about why you said why some republicans were resistant to this commission. I think that that kind of intense narrow focus threatiens people in my party who may have been playing a role they should not have been playing. I know youre not going to name names, but what role are you concerned about that people in your party played . I think if you look at what happened after the election, if you look at whats happened publicly about meetings happening at the white house, for example, where the president was reportedly considering things like martial law and seizing voting machines. If you look at the extent to which members of congress were involved in that, its really important to have the independence and authority to get to the bottom of every single thing that happened. To get to the bottom people who were encourage willing and promoting the big low. You know those people who seem to abandoning the rule of law and the Electoral College was somehow consistent with their constitutional duties. What is like standing up for people who have been adding to the Constitution Alt and be shunned by House Republicans. It looks weird from where i sit. Well, youre not a house republican. True. Whether or not thats criminal is something the Justice Department will determine. I think the important thing is to make sure that the investigation is not indfeared with from either side. The white house or republicans in congress, i think its very important for the nation that the investigation go wherever it may lead and the Justice Department be able to pursue that and hold that accountable. Do you think Kevin Mccarthy has something to share and hes reluctant to talk about it. He did talk on the phone with President Trump that day and according to the republican congresswoman from Washington State the conversation was very contentious and and trump was siding with the insurrectionists. Well, i think that thats the kind of thing that a commission will look at. They will look at the whole range of what went on that day and what went on in the days leading up to it and, you know, i would imagine thats something that will be something that they will get to the bottom of. This is nod your dads Republican Party with the likes of matt gaetz and Marjorie Taylor greene and louie gohmert. In fact, the only person i can tell thats faced repercussions when its come to the big lie and the insurrection are not, you know, mo brooks who helped incite the crowd or gohmert or any of those, its you. For refusing to lie about it. What does that say and if the house Republican Party now stands for lying is it worth saving . We have to save the party. I think the country needs a Republican Party and certainly, you know, the ideals that i believe in should reflect the party. I think its been clear on my side recently. We need to incentivize people who want to come to washington and do real work and people who need to legislate and get back to a time where we can have vigorous Policy Debates where were confident in our views and our side of things that we did stand up and argue for them and make the case but that we didnt have the vitriol flying back and forth that we certainly have over the course of the last several years and people ought to want to be there and work hard and not be social media stars, and thats not the right way to be there. The vast majority of people are there for the right reason and we need to find a way in our society to incentivized more substance and seriousness. The issues we have to grapple with as a nation are important and they are really consequential and we need to being committed to that task of coming up with the right solutions. Your view is a minority view right now. I know you want to fight for it but can you win this fight . Its going to be super tough. Its right and we have to win it. I think there are several things going on and as you pointed out before people have been lied to. I think that its really important for all of us to get to the bottom of what happened in 2020 and what happened on january 6th and to go forward and looking towards the truth. I think you also have more members who believe in substance and policy than people who are willing to say so. If you look to impeach, for example, there are members who told me they were afraid for their own security and in some instances for their lives. One of the reasons this has been so distressing for me is someone who also wants there to be a thriving Republican Party i want there to be thriving Policy Debates. Thats right. And i question this congress man who i previously respected is lying about this what else are they lying about but i want to ask you about these important Policy Disputes and right now there the conflict between israel and the Israeli Defense force and hamas. Hamas is classified a Terrorist Group by the u. S. Government but i do wonder this particular conflict began because of the eviction of some palestinian families from East Jerusalem and then it sported out and they started Firing Missiles into civilian centers. Do you have any idea about the removal and the evicting of the palestinian families from East Jerusalem . You have to look at the specifics about the eviction. You had a situation where the israelis had honored some of the Property Rights that the jordanian government had provided and certainly, you know, a dispute about an evict should never be justification for the Terrorist Attacks were seeing now. Do you think these incentives can make a big difference . You know, i think whatever works, and that is an excellent approach in my mind. I mean, jake, i think what liz just said is true. Honestly, the people who havent been Wearing Masks are not going to get vaccinated just because then they dont have to wear masks because it doesnt make any sense. The people who dont want to get vaccinated are the same people, as she intimated, who havent really been wanting to wear masks in the first place, so, you know, the cdc announcement was a real bombshell. I think many people had hoped and had been talking about a more gradual approach that took into account that still less than half of americans have a single vaccine shot, right, and were still seeing jurisdictions that have really if not worry some notable case numbers and hospitalizations, so you have a real scramble today with peoples Head Spinning trying to figure out how to implement and react to these guidelines on top of this Vaccine Reluctance which continues to underlie the problem. Walmart, sams club, costco, trader joes have announced that they are dropping their Mask Mandates for the fully vaccinated. How important is that, and do you think that they need to check to see if people have vaccination cards as i got when i got vaccinated at Georgetown Hospital at the door to make sure that people are, you know, upholding the rules that they are setting . So, requiring evidence of vaccination is a really fraught topic. We struggle with it in the Health Care System and settinging right . There have been a lot of discussions about Influenza Mandates or mandates for influenza vaccination. We can do that. We have set that precedent. When you move outside of a setting where youre asking people to be vulnerable in a health care kind of thing and you go to places of retail and commerce and you start asking people to share what is considered protected health information, thats going to make peoples heads spin. I do not think thats going to be well received, and i suspect that in terms of peoples privacy that would be considered an infringement. Thats the whole challenge with this entire policy shift. First of all, you know, epidemiologists and infedexfectous disease doctors are the most nervous people youll talk to in this space so if you want to be told its fine to do whatever you want to do, im not the person to talk to about it, right . I think that what those epidemiologists are reacting to have a couple of concerns. Were counting on escalating vaccination will be able to tip the balance of declining caseloads and well get past this pandemic. Whats really worrisome is were kind of stagnant in terms of vaccination as we just discussed.
