Feeding hundreds of families in need. And putting on toy drives. He is 1 of 103 hispanic officers that make up the 1,800member Charlotte Mecklenburg police department. For this chilean native, this job is a Dream Come True. I had to learn english and do everything everybody does and work hard and become a citizen and then i became a Police Officer, which was my dream. So i see the need. And i think i can make a huge difference in my community. Reporter dianne gallagher, cnn, atlanta. I love seeing that story. Im Brianna Keilar alongside john berman. Eva vaccined americans going unmasked. A leading voice for teachers will join us in a moment. Plus, a brandnew cnn exclusive. A Capitol Police officer speaks out on lawmakers lying about the insurrection that he and his colleagues survived that day. House republicans just minutes away from picking liz cheneys replacement. Is Elise Stefanik conservative enough to win the secret vote . And the race to vaccinate just took a literal turn. We go to talladega where they are giving away free laps to fans who get covid shots. A very good morning to our viewers here in the United States and around the world. It is friday, may the 14th. Tgif. A major Pandemic Milestone as well. The cdc now saying if youre fully vaccinated you can drop the masks. You can drop the social distancing, both indoors and out with few exceptions. President biden out celebrating the news. If youre fully vaccinated and can take your mask off, you have earned the right to do something that americans are known for all around the world. Greeting others with a smile, with a smile. So its a good day for the country. Right now onethird of the country is fully vaccinated. Will the new guidance on masks help encourage americans who are hesitant to funinally get their shot. Miguel, Brian Stelter said last night it felt like ve day in new york. Im curious. Have you come across a lot of People Necking in times square . Yeah, theres not a lot of deep, passionate kissing, so far, in times square so well hold off on that. But at least you can brush your teeth up, shave that pandemic beard, put your makeup on because masks, at least for the vaccinated, are now out. But looking around times square today, about 80 , maybe 90 of the people Walking Around outside here even with the new cdc guidance, theyre still wearing masks. Its going to take a while for a lot of people to feel confident and comfortable taking that mask off after the hellish year weve been through. Heres what a few americans across the country are saying. This is something that weve been looking forward to for a year that looked almost like a decade. It felt that long. And just to come out here and see people relax and be able to, you know, to roam around without feeling that pressure of who has covid, it was just a great feeling. Wear a mask so no one has to wear just common courtesy for your fellow person, whether theyre vaccinated or not. Whats the first thing youd like to do . A concert . Something youd like to do . Take a deep breath. Its great. I love it. Its like Another World right now. Fully vaccinated myself, pfizer. Now i can just i keep the mask because some of the people feel uncomfortable. I am so happy. I couldnt wait. More freedom. Im tired of ordering things online and not going into the stores because the mask has to stay on so long. I was wearing my mask all the time. I not catch the covid. So for you its a safety thing. You want to be 110 sure . Yes. Now this is at the heart of it. Even people who are vaccinated arent entirely sure its going to work or they live in a household thats maybe the kids arent vaccinated. Maybe they have people with a compromised immune system. Its going to take baby steps. I think through the summer and into september as people get used to it, well be a lot more k comfortable. But save the ve day, deep kissing for now in times square. Maybe down the road. Miguel marquez, thank you for that advice on many different fronts there. On the same day as the monumental announcement about new mask guidance, the president of the second Largest Teachers Union calling for schools to reopen in person five days a week. She joins us now. Randi weingarten. You were one of my last inperson interviews last march in this studio before the big shutdown. Great to see you here in person unmasked. Your announcement preceded the cdc new guidance. Theyre not connected at all. Leave that aside for a second. So that aside, what changed for you to come out and say, five days a week, in person. Several things. Number one, just like what changed, i think, for the cdc, was the efficacy of the vaccines. The vaccines we have seen the vaccines really work. What we look. We have always wanted to be back in school. Last april, a month after everything shut down, we were the first ones to put our report out about how to get back to inschool learning because we knew that inschool learning was vital for kids. Teachers do want what kids need. But we also knew that safety was not an obstacle to getting kids back in. Safety was the vehicle to reopen schools in person and keep them open. But what happened is that joe biden actually did i dont want to be political, but he did what donald trump wouldnt. They created the kind of National Guidance through the cdc and they created the resources. So the National Guidance, the resources and the vaccines have been key. 89 of my members have taken the vaccines and what youre seeing over the last two months, since people have, is that no one or very few people are getting sick, and nobody is getting as sick as they were. So it creates trust. And last thing i would say is, ive been in, i guess its been six or seven schools since ive been double vaxed and this is what ive seen. The joy of teachers and kids back in school. So we know its not riskfree. But we think that you can mitigate all of the risks, and i think yesterdays announcement by the cdc is really great news. Why not tomorrow . Literally y not tomorrow . If 90 of your teachers are vaccinated, if we know what we know now, why not just go back in school in person tomorrow. Frankly, 97 of the schools are open for inperson learning. Not five days a week. About 60 of them are. The real key right now is that about twothirds of our parents, particularly black and brown parents, dont trust it. So where but im all in okay. For getting schools open all the time. I have a few important questions about the news on the masks. How do you feel about Mask Requirements in schools. Given the vaccines are so effective, how do you feel about kids still being required to wear masks . Kids who are vaccinated, teachers who are vaccinated, it sounds like from the cdc guidance yesterday that it says that they can be unmasked but were going to have to have some protocols about who has the vaccine and who doesnt have the vaccine. So its going to take a minute or two to try to figure out what those protocols are. How do you feel some School Districts require certain vaccinations for students. How do you feel about requiring coronavirus vaccinations . So im a big believer in vaccinations. But with ul the polarization and hesitancy right now, i think we have to convince people to take the vaccines. Were still in emergency use, and i think for this period of time, its about convincing people. As we look back on this year and i have kids who are in eighth grade. What do you think has been lost. I think the Social Isolation has been the worst thing that has happened because of the coronavirus. There are some kids who did very well on remote. You know that, before covid, i was not a big believer in remote education. I think that inschool education is really important. And its not just being in school, but we have to recover and reimagine public education. But whats really been lost is the peertopeer contact. Whats really been lost is the prolonged effects of Social Isolation. I think a lot of kids are going to recover academically. Weve had education disrupted. But i think that the issue is, what kind of resources are going to be are we going to wrap around schools . The emotional, the social, the academic. But also, and this is probably the most important thing ill say, its not just, you know, weve seen all the huge inequities. We have to make sure that in the schools that were least resourced, the schools that had the most inequities, lets make sure we do civics, social studies, science and we spark kids passion p. We. Weve got a lot of work to do going forward. Appreciate you coming in. A Capitol Police officer not holding back on the politicians who keep lying about what happened on january 6th. Its insulting. Its a slap in the face, and its like its kind of like were being dismissed. More from him in a cnn exclusive, next. And in minutes, House Republicans will choose a new leader. Will the, quote, Handmaiden Of Trump as one congresswoman calls her, prevail. You need a Financial Plan that can help grow and protect your money. Were hearing from another one of the brave Police Officers who faced off against a protrump mob at the u. S. Capitol during the january 6th insurrection. Officer harry dunn helped defend the capitol. We heard also heard this week from another whose Harrowing Bodycam video we were able to finally see this week. Officer Michael Fanone of the d. C. Police getting assaulted from all sides, pleading for his life, telling the rioters he has kids in the hope that they would spare him. We asked officer dunn about what he and his fellow officers endured that day and what he thinks about the politicians who continue to deny basic facts about the attack. We heard officer fanone pleading saying, i have kids. I have kids. Trying to save his own life. You have said you didnt think you were going to make it through alive there. And again, i dont want to make this about the members of congress. You work around them and near them. Theres an ocean out in the country among some people. These people, they werent out there for harm. I mean, how do you convince them . I can relate to officer fanone when it comes to that. I have a daughter. I had a moment where i didnt think that, hey, it was a p possibility i might not make it home. So i relate to that. Its saddening because you know what you went through. And i feel like thats a lot of the time where officers find like solitude in each other is because nobody really understands what we went through, even with thousands of hours of footage of what we went through. Its hard to believe that people still deny what really happened. How do you look at that tape and see anything else than assault . I dont get it. I dont understand. Have you wondered why some people either lie or they dont want to believe what theyre seeing with their very eyes . Do you think that they are fooling themselves or do you think that they know that they are misrepresenting what we can see . I just think people in general not just politicians, people in general have a problem with being wrong. Its okay to say, hey, ive got it wrong or, hey, i didnt understand it this way or my initial thoughts were this, but once the film is released, whoa, i didnt know that. And when you have footage released and people telling you firsthand experiences what they went through for you for people to contradict that, its insulting. Its a slap in the face, and its like its kind of like were being dismissed as our opinions and what we experience didnt matter. So its just frustrating. Joining us now to discuss this further, cnns very own don lemon. Don, you spoke to harry dunn before and officer Michael Fanone. Were going to play a little bit of that in a second. But just listening to harry this morning, it blows your mind it blows your mind after what he went through to have people say, it didnt happen. It didnt happen. You know, you didnt go through what we all see you go through there. They were tourists. You saw the pictures and you didnt know what the media has said, it would be like a normal tourist day. Its bs. And they should know better. I think people are have gotten used to, in the trump era, creating and living in their own reality. Creating their own facts and living in their own facts. But those are not facts. Thats not reality. What happened to the officers were was horrific. Every single officer from officer Michael Fanone to officer harry dunn, both of whom i know who are great men, who are family men, who all they wanted to do was go home to their families, trying to protect the capitol. And the very people theyre trying to protect are lying about them. And diminishing and dismissing the heroic efforts that they went through. The handtohand combat that they went through, the racist names that officer harry dunn was called. The n word about a dozen times or more. And officer Michael Fanone saying when he got pushed out into the crowd. I got one what did that mean . I got one . What am i going to do . It reminded me of when you see those videos of people chasing people to lynch them in the south and before and during jim crow and slavery. Its unbelievable. The lawmakers should be anamed of themselves and they should be made to sit down and watch that video with the very officers who protected them on that day. And don, of course, officer dunn is one of those officers. He works with Capitol Police. So he is still defending, you know, he is still there protecting lawmakers who are saying this didnt happen. Officer fanone is part of d. C. Metropolitan police. He does have a little more distance. I think weve certainly seen how direct he has been. Lets listen to what he said about republican lawmakers who are lying about the insurrection. Those are lies. And peddling that bullshit is an assault on every officer that fought to defend the capitol. Its disgraceful. We talked with officer dunn and he said this doesnt affect how i do my job, but what is so clear is that when they are dealing with this, whitewashing of what happened, it does affect how they cope with what they went through. It makes it very difficult. I spoke with a republican lawmaker last night, and he told me during the commercial break, listen, i fought in the war. He said i went to war. He said the difference was that i didnt have people denying the realities of war or denying my experience. And what happened at the capitol was nothing less than war. As i said, handtohand combat. To have people deny that is disgusting. The only reason theyre doing that, i believe, is because, one, theyre embarrassed. Two, because they dont want it marked down in history. They dont want it recorded, because of their theyre complicit because of the lies they told and the way they were able to be coopted by the former president. To them im sure its embarrassing. And its, you know, some form of trying to reconcile it in their minds, cognitive dissonance. Im not a psychologist, but something is off. Something is off. I think theres a third reason theyre doing it. They think they can get away with it. And thats part of it. They cant, john. We cant let them. What are the consequences . Are there consequences for lying this brazenly . What are the consequences for lying this brazenly . One, they should be voted out. Two, there should be a commission as liz cheney wants. There should be, as there was a 9 11 commission, there should be a January 6th Commission and they should be held accountable and their words should be played back to them. The videotape of what they said should be recorded. Amanda carpenter last night said, i asked her, and very profound. And simple. Very profound and simple. It is up to us. It is up to the american people. And people ask me, why are you playing what happened on january 6th . Number one, because its important. Number two, because i care about the officers. And i three, i care about the truth. And people need to know it happened. And we have to they have to continually be reminded of what happened. They have to face the consequences. What they did was wrong. And as journalists and american citizens, if we let them get away without being held accountable, then it is on us. We deserve what we get. Don lemon, can i just say how great it is youre willing to come in and talk to us in the morning. Its really a testament to how much you like Brianna Keilar. So we appreciate you coming in. And watch cnn tonight every night at 10 00. Hi, brianna. Okay, john. Hi, bye. Up next really one of the issues right now that the world has to deal with. Violence rocking israeli cities overnight. Coming under Artillery Fire amid growing questions on whether israel is preparing to launch a Ground Invasion against hamas in response to days of rocketfire from palestinian militants. The United Nations warned this could become a fullscale war. More than 100 people, including 31 children, have been killed. The violence is now spread through arab and jewish towns that have peacefully coexisted for decades. Joining us to discuss is Fareed Zakaria, the host of Fareed Zakaria gps. He has a special coming out, a radical rebellion, the Transformation Of The Gop. Thats going to Air Sunday Night at 8 00 on cnn. Lets look at this conflict. It is horrible. The numbers coming out of this. Weve seen these clashes escalate through the week. Now the fighting isnt just limited to gaza. Theres violence. There are ethnic clashes in cities that previously have been peaceful. How did we get here . We got here largely because the Israeli Government really forgot that it had a palestinian problem, by which i mean it really had stopped trying to negotiate any kind of deal with the palestinians for years now. And it had slowly been encroaching on land. The specific cause here was the attempt to evict six palestinian families from their homes in east jerusalem. And every square inch is contested. Its not just the Israeli Government. The world forgot in a sense there was this palestinian problem of 4 million or 5 Million People who do not have political rights. The Trump Administration essentially gave a green light to netanyahu to do whatever he wanted to never pressuring him to try to work out some deal with the palestinians. Instead, netanyahu reached out to the arabs and tried to make separate peaces over the again ignoring the palestinian problem. This is a sad, bloody, tragic reminder that you still have this enormous Festering Problem in israel and in the middle east more generally because youre now seeing protests in jordan, which could destabilize that country. And at some point, somebody has to deal with the palestinian problem. Yeah. And the u. N. Warning this could go to fullscale war. I do want to ask you about this great special you have. I think so many people, including people who consider themselves still republicans but might be sort of on the outs or considered extremely moderate are trying to understand the Republican Party as it exists today. How it has become so radicalized with extremism. And as you point out, to do that, you really need to understand one man in particular, barry goldwater, who was the republican nominee for president in 1964 who would go on to lose, but his radical new approach to politics really won big in the party of lincoln and helped shape what it is today. This is some of what were going to hear about in your latest documentary this sunday. Lets take a look. I will remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. He called his supporters to be extremists, to be radicals. Was it a watershed moment in america . Yes, it was. Goldwaters defense of extremism would lose him the election. The lyndon b. Johnson landslide of november 3rd, 1964. He received just 5 of the black vote. Down from 32 for Richard Nixon just four years earlier. But goldwater had changed history for the republicans. He created what we now know as the right wing base. Goldwater does in 64, he brings together the postworld war ii, the cold war republicans who are fervently opposed to Business Regulation and brings those together with the southern democrats, the southern White Supremacists who are against the idea of desegregation. And he marries them in a new coalition that is going to take over the party. The bread crumbs really go back decades here. Yeah, its extraordinary. Goldwater lost, but hes probably the most influential figure in the history of the Republican Party in the last 70 years. And he created a kind of two things. One, he created this ideology of, you know, free market ideology, so extreme that no republican president has ever been able to implement it. It was essentially a call to roll back the new deal, roll back the great society. But also a fight Club Mentality. Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. And that fight Club Mentality is really seized upon by Newt Gingrich in the 1990s who, you know, takes down george h. W. Bush. And then donald trump. And that attitude, if you will, has survived almost everything. Its been seven decades, and you still have this idea that its important to be extreme. Its important to fight the republican moderates who are the real enemy in your midst and we see that in the fight between liz cheney and the republicans, except this time, they dont even care what your ideology is. Its become more a kind of sense of tribal loyalty to its become a klan because Liz Cheney Is, of course, much more conservative than Elise Stefanik. But the issue is not ideology anymore. Its loyalty. And once a party starts putting ideology over loyalty, then its more a tribe than a party. I am really looking forward to seeing this, fareed. A radical rebellion the Transformation Of The Gop that airs sunday at 8 00 p. M. On cnn. Fareed, always great to get your insights. They always make us so much smarter. We appreciate you being on. Thank you so much. House republicans meeting right this moment. Thats what weve been watching there in those live pictures on the right side of your screen. And what they are going to do, likely, is move Elise Stefanik into this position that liz cheney has just been ousted from. Does she have enough to win on this Secret Ballot Vote. There is hope that the cdcs new Guidance Letting vaccinated Americans Go Maskless indoors will innocentivize more people get vaccinated. Many republicans have dug in against getting the shot. Elizabeth cohen has been talking to officials about the push to get conservatives to roll up their sleeves. Elizabeth, great to see you. Im hearing this is really tough. That there are sort of plans and psas and all sorts of things for getting other communities to get the shot. Weve seen really Great Strides made with the black community or latino community. But the concerns that republicans are budging but not really by as much as anyone would like. Lets look at the latest findings from a Kaiser Family foundation survey done in april. Among the definitely not, like no way am i getting this shot, it was 4 for democrats but 20 for republicans. That is a huge difference. And thats recently. That was about a month ago. Hopefully its changed a bit since then. I was speaking to federal officials about the challenges here. I want to show you what one of them said. One of these federal officials said. Its kind of a mess to figure out with this particular audience what resonates with them because they see vaccines as taking away their freedom. Its moving a rock up a mountain. Moving a rock up a mountain. John, this whole change that happened yesterday, i asked, do you think that will help . Will that incentivize republicans . And the answer was, not really because its too much of an ideology. Its too much of a the democrats are forcing this upon us. Were not going to do it. The incentives dont seem to matter. Your life should be an incentive. One would think. Elizabeth cohen, thanks for being with us. John, how is this for an incentive to get your covid vaccine. Free laps at talladega. Tomorrow racing fans who get a shot or test also get to drive their own car around the biggest track in nascar. Joining me to talk about this is brian crichton, the president of talladega speedway. This is a Dream Come True for nascar fans. I am sort of i am a bit of a nascar fan myself. Ive been to talladega. For folks not nascar fans, you should want to do this, too, is what i will say. This is amazing. Tell us what people get to do in order if theyre going to get their shot. Yeah, absolutely. Good morning from beautiful talladega, alabama, and the talladega superspeedway. Its a Beautiful Day today and will be a Beautiful Day tomorrow for the laps around the track event for vaccines and the drive to cure covid. So fans that come out tomorrow and if they are tested or get the vaccination, theyll be able to take two laps around the talladega superspeedway. The biggest, baddest and fastest track. Were keeping everybody at pace speeds behind pace cars and pace trucks but to experience the 33 degrees of banking and talladega Super Speedway is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Its very cool is what i will say. Mark, im sure that you are very excited as a Public Health official to have this incentive. Tell us about the Vaccine Hesitancy that youre seeing in alabama. Well, right now were at about 30 statewide in our vaccine rate. At least one dose or more. We want to see that number go up. So were very excited that talladega was our gracious host here. The Super Speedway is incredible. And we want to see those numbers increase tomorrow. Are you thinking, mark, are you hearing people who said, you know, i was on the fence about getting vaccinated but this is going to get me to do this or at least to get a test . We are hearing that. Especially excitement in the younger population and male population, which is who we were hopefully targeting. Yes, were hearing that. Theres going to be a good showing tomorrow. Its very exciting. And brian, heres my question. And it makes sense. The vaccine or the test comes after the laps. How do you make sure that people dont just take their minivan, do their awesome laps, have their fun time and then say, actually never mind. Im out of here. We think that, obviously, that the incentive for the lap is going to drive the people here that want that vaccine and that want to or to get tested. So we have a flow where were going to bring them off of track and bring them right into our nascar garage area where well actually, the Alabama Department of Public Health, as well as the Alabama National guard and the cdc will perform either the vaccines and or the testing. So were going to funnel everybody through there. So we feel the people that are coming out, its because they want their vaccine and they want to experience this racetrack. You guys, thank you so much. Brian crichton, mark johnson, sign me up. Too bad im already vaccinated but i appreciate you both coming on. Absolutely. Come on out here some time. I would love it. I would love it. Oh, john berman, that would be amazing. You take out like your normal family car on a Super Speedway. The minivan at talladega. Its everyones dream. Its everyones dream to take the minivan out for a spin there. And that thing tilts. I cant just tell you how much it tilts. Its like the minivan, right . It does make you wonder. If you can get A Million Bucks in ohio, free beer in new jersey and a free spin around the track at talladega, can i get vaccinated again . Well, what if we need a booster . And you did the story where one beer and they were seeing a spike in vaccinations. Im really curious to see the spike they get from offering people whats really this is really a once in a lifetime opportunity. Its so cool. Yes, to be sure. What else are we watching . Elise stefanik is considered the frontrunner amid some conservatives doubts about her rise from trump critic to loyalist. Joining us now, former republican congressman from florida, francis rooney. He was one of the few Republicans Holding office to publicly criticize former president trump. Thanks for being with us. I want to move a step beyond liz cheney and Elise Stefanik to sort of whats next . Generally speaking, i found you to be an optimistic person but youre also a realist. What are you expecting from House Republicans now . To be honest with you im not expecting a whole lot. Im really quite concerned that the this cult of trump, this Personality Cult which dominate ourselves party has driven them into an intolerance of other views which is unprecedented in the Republican Party. We used to have nelson, rockefeller and gerald ford as well as goldwater and ronald reagan. Now we dont know that. In addition to nixon getting a third of blacks, as fareed said earlier, remember, george bush got almost half of hispanics. We used to be much broader and more focused on solving the problems of the american people. So what happens then . What does this mean . How does this manifest itself . Well, historically, Personality Cults have not worked out very well. They have ended up wreaking great havoc on the people they govern. So i dont think the prognosis for their success offers us a whole lot. I think we should stay in our party but seek the views that made our party great and made great contributions to our party and maybe, over time, the trump phenomenon will abate. If it were me, i would not be kissing his ring. I would be ignoring him so the Abatement Process could begin. You think about our globalism. We used to have a party based on globalism and trade.
