To be here. We grew up right across the street in cuney homes. Thats where we were raised. Were a big family. I grew up with rodney and george was always like a Father Figure to me, always slept in the same bed. There were a lot of play fights and things of that nature. So its really significant to be here right at home. Yeah. But i think the main reason were here because yesterday on that call, it meant the world. Were very grateful for it. If you saw that video, its selfskblantory. We all know that it was a murder and torture in broad daylight. We all know civil rights were violated. But for some reason, with video footage, evidence, everything supporting exactly what we saw, we somehow never get these charges. For what reason . Thats to be identified later. But we are grateful and other situations that we see similar things and no charges are brought. Im going to go back to the day we heard the guilty verdict. I was actually on facetime as the judge read the verdict. I was on facetime with miss tamika palmer, the brother of Breonna Taylor. There was one thing that stuck out too, the fact she cried and she cried really hard for us. Were connected with them. As the judge read the verdict, she said shes happy for us. She said, im happy for you all. I stopped her, and i told her no, youre happy for us. This is a moment for america. This is a moment for you too. This gives you hope. She said that, she said she had hope, and she was proud because what happened to her daughter wasnt right and were still fighting for charges for Breonna Taylor. So in a sense, this was for america. Immediately after the guilty verdict, we held a Press Conference similar to this, and one thing that stuck out to me was something i said, and i never rehearse or write down anything i say. My exact words were, so when i say today is a pivotal moment, its a chance for america to take a turn in the light direction and right a lot of wrongs so we dont keep adding to these names. Come on. Thank you, brandon. And when i said that, thats exactly what i meant. There shouldnt be another george floyd. I lost a man that was like a dad to me. He was also a father to children. He had a daughter. He had brothers that were just little. A lot of times i took days and usually called him for life advice or just laugh about a sports game, and i cant do that. No family should go through what we went through. Its unacceptable. When is it going to start . Amen. But this gives us hope, this lets us know there is change on the way if we keep pressing and pressing the gas to pass police laws. Where he need Police Reform. Theres no way the color of your skin or your race dictates how youre policed while in police custody. Thats absolutely unacceptable. And i close out on that note. We have time for like four questions and then the family has to get to the next graduation. Any questions . What a passionate moment right there out of houston at Texas Southern university there. You have the nephew of george floyd, brandon williams, who said no one should go through this, but this gives us hope, talking about the death of his uncle, george floyd, who was like a father to him but then consequently after his death and the conviction of the Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin, he says, this as well as the federal charges now just imposed on the four Minneapolis Police officers, he said, this gives us hope. Of course, we heard from congresswoman Sheila Jackson lee, who said this is demonstrative now. The Department Of Justice is now open for business and lives will be saved and congressman al green who said the Winds Of Change are blowing across this nation, this as a result of the Department Of Justice now imposing federal charges against the four Minneapolis Police officers. Our omar jimenez has been covering all of this since the very beginning. Hes joining us right now. This is an emotional moment for this family and for all of those involved. You heard the nephew and brother of george floyd talk about how, like family members, the members of congress, al green and Sheila Jackson lee, have been throughout, and how they believe this is a turning point. Also, omar, were also joined by tim alexander, A Civil Rights Attorney and former police detective. Hes also a democrat running for u. S. House seat in new jersey. Omar, let me begin with you about these federal charges and now the consequence of such and how this is making the george floyd family feel particularly. Well, for the floyd family, i think we heard in some of this Press Conference, theyre emphasizing this moment is bigger than justice their family, and they want that message to be clear for other families who have gone through similar tragedies. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson lee listed the names of trayvon martin, Breonna Taylor and more and they hope the charges that come down give the department the opportunity to reinvestigate some of the other cases, as the congresswoman put it, languished without a proper form of justice. So when you look at the actual federal indictments that were brought down against Derek Chauvin, two federal indictments against chauvin, but one encompassing all of the former Minneapolis Police officers, these are in addition to the state charges Derek Chauvin was convicted on not too long ago but that the other officers are still waiting for. So really you get the Impression Officials at the state and federal level did not want this to go by without bringing the full weight of the Justice System down on these former officers. I think for a family like floyds, they look at that and say while this is great for us and we really appreciate this, it cant end with us and this consistency needs to be available to unfortunately the next family, the next hashtag that inevitably pops up in these types of scenarios. Tim, we heard it from the nephew there, brandon williams, who said this is not just for us. This is what he heard on the phone when he was on facetime with Breonna Taylors mother, who said, i want to congratulate you and he said really, this is not just for us, this is really for america. Tim, talk to me about your reaction and thoughts to these federal charges which include willfully depriving george floyd the right to be free from Unreasonable Force by a Police Officer. Two of the officers also charged in connection with their failure to intervene in chauvins use of reasonable force and all four were charged with failing to give floyd medical aid. How much of a groundbreaking set of charges is this from your viewpoint . This is exactly what ive been talking about. First of all, let me acknowledge and give thanks to the fact that since our former ag Jeff Sessions shut down these type of Justice Department interventions, we havent seen this type of reaction from the Justice Department, so the floyd family is correct this is a rebirth, this is an opportunity for us to have the Justice Department review these type of police brutalities. Im ecstatic about it. I think back to my own experience being able to use at the hands of the police department, and there was no Justice Department review. This is a good day. This is a new dawn. To the charges of Justice Department brought, theyre spot on. This is exactly what ive been arcing before i decided to run for congress, that the Ideal Situation would be if a Police Officer sees another Police Officer of assaulting someone when the situation is calm, and you have whatever they were dealing with addressed, that also should turn to the person breaking the law in front of them and say youre under arrest. And i said this a million times, if they fail to do it, theyre a conspirator to the crime or aiding and abetting at the very least. Here the Justice Department just proved that very point with the indictment for failure to intervene. Thats exactly what we want to see happen. Intervening and checking each other. We heard congresswoman Sheila Jackson lee say shes stepping out of her boundaries, while shes not going to influence the Department Of Justice, she did say, however, she would hope this would be impetus for the Department Of Justice to revisit cases like eric gardner to mayor rice, trayvon martin, asking for reconsideration. To what except do you believe that might happen and what kind of potential might it make in your view if the Department Of Justice does that . We know theres not statue of limitation on murder so they certainly can go back and review those cases to see if they can bring appropriate charges. Were not talking about the actual murder of those individuals but violation of those rights within the statute. And thats the only consideration this should give, has the statute expired for what they can bring as far as charges. I think they should be extremely excessive and even, by the way, let me say this, even if they cant come with charges, they can certainly give a review and issue a report on the Justice Departments their response to their review and explain why they cant bring charges but add least identify, yes, we acknowledge this was wrong, this was potentially criminal but for the statute of limitations, we cant do anything. But nevertheless, were now going to issue a review of Overall Department actions based on what we found here. That not should happen, it must happen in order for us to start healing our country. We will leave it for there now. I appreciate you both. Thank you. The Police Reform bill, named in honor of george floyd, is finding bipartisan agreement on some key issues. Sources say a group of democratic and gop lawmakers working on a law to overall policing appear to be finding some kind of ground on major parts of the bill. For the latest lets bring in Daniella Diaz on capitol hill. Tell us about what youre learning. Fred, thats exactly right. These negotiators are very close to reaching a deal on bipartisan relief reform legislation. These three negotiators can you congresswoman karen bass, former chair of the congressional black caucus, senator tim scott, a republican from South Carolina and senator cory booker, a democrat from new jersey. These three have been speaking countless times to try to meet in the middle on a Police Reform bill that can pass through the senate. Heres what we have learned, we learned they were able to eat on the middle and some of the sticking points theyve been working on, including setting standards on noknock warrants, banning choke holds except in lifethreatening situations and placing limits on equipment the Defense Department can send to Police Departments. They were the three issues they were able to meet in the middle on. Now there are still two issues that remain that are sticking points for these negotiators including qualified immunity, which protects Police Officers in civil court. They have not been able to reach a deal on this issue. Scott proposed shifting responsibility to Police Departments rather than individual officers but officers have said they want Police Departments and officers to be held accountable. The other section 4. 2 that addresses the part of the law for prosecuting Police Officers, scott said many times this is a red light for him. But the bottom line these three negotiators, these three lawmakers, are racing to cut a deal before may 25th, which is the anniversary of George Floyds death. Even President Biden said hes hoping legislation could be passed by then. Look, congress was out last week. Theyre back in session so we expect these negotiations to continue in person. Daniella diaz, thank you very much from capitol hill. Appreciate it. Its very clear this was a deliberate act. This is not a random Gas Explosion or Something Like that. The timing of it in particular, the fact the girls were leaving the school, it was the end of the school day, that definitely plays to a deliberate attack. And that is the sad part about this, fred, because were dealing with here is just the beginning of a concerted effort. Even if the taliban did not do this particular attack, it plays into their hands and thats when things will be there that we really have to worry about as we wind down our presence there. Particularly because of the shared leadership of the taliban and current Afghan Government structuring and with the announcement of the u. S. Military pulling out 2r507s there. What had been your concern about this shared government leadership, and any threat or anticipation that taliban rule particularly as it pertains to forbidding the education of girls, that there might be a greater possibility to a return to that kind of influence . I think the return to a much more restrictive policy in regards to the education of girls is definitely in the cards. If the taliban gain controlled of the Afghan Government, we are going to see far less education of afghan girls, were going to see repression of not only girls but minority groups in afghanistan, which there are so many. It is going to be a very difficult time for a lot of different people in that country. And let alone people that are part of the current government. Then when it comes to the structure, and the fact theres a multiheaded monster were dealing with in terms of a governing force, it really weakens the central governments hands and its going to be very, very difficult for them to not only work their way out of this but to assume any degree of legitimate control over the countryside. Right now they have control over the cities but they dont really have control over the countryside. And thats a major concern. If i ask you really quickly too about the timing. While the u. S. Is talking about 9 11 withdrawal, the timing Something Like this would happen right now, what kind of signal is that . Theres an intentional signal, right . Yes, there is, absolutely. What theyre trying to do is get us out of there, give as much Crisis Feeling in afghanistan and hasten our withdrawal. Theyre going to use it as a Propaganda Ploy against us. But theyre also going to warn the government that they are not going to be in control of this country much longer, in their view, and theyre also going to make it a lot harder for the government to exercise the remaining control they have. Up next, it was mothers day last year when i was joined by a panel of doctors who were all pregnant, working at the same hospital, by the way, and discussed their concerns having a child during the pandemic. This weekend the same trio is back with me. Thats coming up next. And tomorrow night join dong lemon for a look at marvin gayes groundbreaking album whats going on . 50 years after its release, why has it become an anthem for a new generation. . People years later why is it an anthem for a whole new generation . Its prophecy, man. What do you think marvin knew about whats going on . Marvin gayes whats going on tomorrow at 8 00. U pregnant at the time with daughters while they were also Fighting Covid at the same time at the same hospital in maryland, and now lita, olivia and anna elise were each born last year, all within a few months apart. And heres how their doctor mom said they were feeling last year before giving birth. We initially were so excited we were all pregnant at the same time and all having girls, and it was all our second child, so we had all of these commonalities that were really exciting. I think in early february when the pandemic first hit, that excitement shifted a little bit to being nervous and afraid. And we were entering unchartered territory as most of the country in the world was. I feel so fortunate i had both of them to kind of lean on. Ive talked to several other pregnant colleagues who and all of the mothers out there who might be pregnant or at risk, and you feel alone and isolated. You have this elevated risk. You dont know what to do. So i was so happy i had two other females that i could bounce ideas off of. Thats so nice, that kind of partnership. Here they are with their bundles of joy now. Hello, ladies, and i mean that, times six now super doctors, super moms with me now, dr. Elizabeth claiborne, michelle callahan, and wen carroll. Thank you all so very much. I happy mothers day, and i love your bundles of joy. Theyre all beautiful. And theyre hanging tight through this shot, and all quiet, oh, my gosh. They are in tuned with the moment. Let me begin with you dr. Clayborne there we go. Thank you. Dr. Clayborne, we saw you there a year ago talking about the intersection of anticipation and anxiety. What has this past year been like . Well, fred, its really nice to reflect upon the last year, and even though a lot of us have been through what i would consider a traumatic year, challenging year, its also a year that was filled with so many blessings. I gave birth to this beautiful baby girl. And shes not aware theres a pandemic going on in this world. Every time i come home, even though theres been a lot of stress, i feel like i come home to the joy and energy of my daughter lita and other daughter aida. So im tired and fatigued, but a good fatigued, in a way i feel like im doing such important work in the er but also doing important work as a mom, just trying to juggle it all as best i can. And i think its very rewarding, at most moms will tell you. And anna is clapping, she concurs. What have been the stresses and rewards that have come with being these women who remained in the workforce this past year . In some cases you are the bread winners, too, of your family . Correct. It has been difficult with the kids and everything and being away has been a little difficult, and rebalancing with covid as well and our children. But its been very rewarding. Going to work is stressful, but we all enjoy our jobs very much. In itself, its a rewarding job. And to come home, to be able to be with our family and kids, were just its actually, to fight some of the stress at work, coming home, were just happy to spend every waking moment with our children. Dr. Callahan with olivia there, what will you be, i guess is it too soon to even think about it . But what will you be even considering as we hear discussions about a vaccine for, you know, our younger family members, and if and when olivia will become eligible, what will you be weighing . How will you navigate this world of vaccines with our little ones . Im fully on board for vaccination. She was actually born with a heart condition, which were monitoring, but shes in kind of a Higher Risk Group where she can get covid, so im definitely on board with anything i can do to protect her or my son. I have no hesitation about it. Ladies, we wanted to talk to you all of you tomorrow, but, of course, like so many of us working women, youll be working on mothers day. And i know a lot of people ask me too, how do you juggle being a mom and being a working person, and i say theres no juggling or balancing. It really is just kind of prioritizing. I wonder for you, dr. Clayborne, tell us how you relish this personally and professionally. Yeah, you know fred, i really think mothers day is an important time to acknowledge that. It does take a community, it takes a village to raise children. So there are a lot of people that help me do what i do. I just feel so fortunate that i have my parents who live nearby, my mom is very active and she gets to be in her grandchildrens life by having an amazing livein nanny who makes it possible for me to go to work so i can focus on patients and know my children are well cared for at home. My husband is supportive of the career that i have, even though it requires a lot of work and a lot of hours. So i think as a mop on mothers day, like to also celebrate everyone behind the scenes that makes being a mom possible, especially in the modern age, where a lot of us are working and a lot of us are professionals. For people out there struggling, moms that dont have as many resources, take a look at those who might need help, you never know who they are, and make sure youre always offering a helping hand and knowing someone might put on a good front. I think a lot of us come off as superwomen but were not all of the time. So i think admitting when i need some help and asking for it is important. Fantastic advice. Dr. Nguyen, what is your advice for two moms who are trying to imagine a lot and particularly during this pandemic . I mean, im also very fortunate as well with having my mom live with me, so shes able to stay at home, which is great. My advice for mothers working and juggle everything from covid, just try to do the best you can. There are resources out there that will work for you and your family. Really try to right on cue. Dr. Callahan, i understand youre pregnant again. Congratulations. Thank you. Fantastic. So what how are you approaching this pregnancy given what you have already been through in the last year, and what would be the advice you impart to others, perhaps in a similar predicament as you, situation as you . I think that by now were sort of all used to this new way of living, so its not been a huge adjustment for me. Im very thankful i was able to get the vaccine very early on in the pregnancy so file really reassured by that. And he encourage women who are pregnant and are a little hesitant about it, consider talk with your doctor because i think its known that pregnant women can have more serious cases because you can track covid and theres also been its been shown that you can pass antibodies to your baby. So i think something that has made me excited to be vaccinated. But day to day, i dont think its going to be very much different than the last one. Because it wasnt that long ago that we said were still in the pandemic. Congratulations. You all are phenomenal. Thank you very much. Thank you to big sister as well, olivia, anna and dr. Nguyen and callahan and dr. Clayborne, youre fantastic examples, so inspirational. Thank you very much and thank you for juggling and doing it all. Thank you. Happy mothers day too everyone at home as well. Well be right back. U where everyone is included. Where everyone has access to information, education, opportunity. On friday texas lawmakers voted to move forward with its own voting bill that could make it one of the most difficult places in the country to cast a ballot. This week Florida Governor ron desantis signed a law that curbs voting, and limits who can pick up and return a ballot. And thats all on top of georgias controversial voting law which limits outdoor dropboxes, changes voter i. D. Requirements and bans handing food and drink to voters waiting in long lines. Meanwhile, zdemocrats in congres are pressing forward with combating many of the changes. Joining me right now to talk about all of this live from the National John lewis Voting Rights live action day in atlanta, georgia, democratic congresswoman nikema williams. So good to see you, congresspwoman. Thank you for having me and having this important discussion, fredericka. Absolutely. And first off, happy mothers day weekend. I know youre the mother of a small one. Thank you, thank you. Your battle for voter rights goes back to your days as a young democrat in georgia. Does your fight look even more bleak when you have legislators from Georgia To Texas and florida now passing what critics are calling Voter Suppression laws . So fortunately for us, fredericka, here in the south, especially in georgia, the home of congressman john lewis, the home of dr. Martin luther king, were the cradle of the Civil Rights Movement so we understand what its like to be under these oppressive systems that are continuing to be an affront to our Voting Rights and we have a history of standing up and speaking out and fighting back. While the State Legislatures are passing laws that are equivalent to what we saw in the jim crow era days, we might not be Counting Jellybeans in a jar but the results are still the same, keep people like me away from the ballot box. What we know is people are going to continue to turn out despite that and we will do the good work to make sure we get National Response to the Voting Restrictions and pass hr1. It should not matter where you live in this country, your right to vote should be standardized. Your zip code should not determine your access to the ballot. Hr1, the for the people act, its still getting tweaked in the senate, but you say you really need to get that passed in order to combat some of these new laws on the state level. But right now it appears as though theres very little chance in the u. S. Senate of clearing the 60vote threshold needed. So then what . So we still have to look at this filibuster. The filibuster is a relic also of the jim crow era and we have to make sure were not allowing procedural maneuvers in the United States senate to get between people and their right to vote. Thats whats happening right now. So were still having conversations on the senate side with our democratic colleagues that are not yet completely on board. But im confident at the end of the day the United States senate will be on the side of the people and on the side of democracy and make sure everyone has free and fair access to the ballot. Then, let me get your thoughts on this other very important topic, Police Reform. Right now theres a Bipartisan Group of lawmakers, senators in particular, who are trying to find some compromise. How hopeful are you . So i have every confidence in my colleague karen bass and the work shes doing with the George Floyd Justice in policing act. I know there are tough conversations that are happening right now and i completely have faith in her when as a end result we see a final product, there will be accountability measured and included in the George Floyd Justice in policing act so we can make sure were moving forward in a way all people feel safe in this country when it comes to interactions with the police. While it appears right now the leading senators working on this, booker, bass and tim scott, while theres some agreement on noknock warrants, on banning choke holds and limitations on equipment provided by the department of defense, ist still seems like its the qualified immunity issue where theres much consternation. Tim scott is saying, heres some compromise. Perhaps it would be the Police Departments held accountable instead of individual officers accused of bad acts when it comes down to any kind of civil lawsuits. Do you feel like that is a good compromise, or do you feel like theres still a lot of work to be done on the issue of qualified immunity . Theres absolutely still work to be done. Accountability is the key in this. What we saw in the chauvin case is that was one case where an officer was held accountable and we have to make sure we have a standardized process across the board so all police are held accountable in their interactions wan theyre doing. Thats why im a Firm Believer we need to repeal qualified immunity because accountability is the key in this whole process. Congresswoman nikema williams, we will leave it there for now. Thank you very much, and happy mothers day weekend. Thank you. Coming up an outofcontrol Chinese Rocket headed straight for earth. Its 100 feet tall, 20 tons. We begin this hour with Breaking News, an explosion in afghanistan killed at least 30 people and injured 50 others. The blast happened just outside an all girls school in kabul. Local reports say it happened just as the girls were leaving the school. Cnn International Editor Nick Paton Walsh is following the details for us. What are we learning about this explosion .
