And facebooks Oversight Board upholds the companys decision to suspend trump from the Social Media Platform but said facebook must review the decision to block trump within six months. Lets discuss now. Joining me now White House Correspondent john harwood and former congressman charlie dent. He is now a political them. Gentlemen, good evening. So charlie, lets start with you. Liz cheney warning that trumps language can provoke violence again. In her new op ed she writes this. Trump is seeking to unravel critical elements of our constitutional structure that make democracy work, confidence in the result of elections and in the rule of law. Shes choosing truth over power. Shes pretty much alone. When they cut her loose, what should any remaining republicans do . Well, don, youre right. She is being canceled right now for standing up for truth. For standing up for democracy. For protecting the constitutional order. Shes doing all the right things. Sadly, like i said before, a leader with no followers is just a guy or in this case a gal taking a walk. And i feel for her. Shes trying to do the right thing. She and Adam Kinzinger both snapped. Theyve had enough of this thing. And im surprised that more havent spoken up. Maybe theres a short term benefit to some of the house leadership right now by pushing her out. That might be enough. They can still win the midterms. But long term, i think this was a catastrophe for the Republican Party. Basically talk about a big tent. Theyre marginalizing those who have rational thoughtful voices like liz cheney and Adam Kinzinger, pushing them out while empowering and embracing the extreme elements like Marjorie Taylor greene and the others. Its really sad. Its tragic and it breaks my heart to watch this happen. Do you think there will be more people that will walk with her or no, they dare not do it . Can she build a coalition . Does she have any options . Are people like you and her and adam kensinger, are there any options . Right now, she sustained the vote a couple months ago when they came after her. This time it is a little different because it feels like it is not just a vote on whether or not you want liz cheney. There is a choice, an alternative in the wings. So i dont know what the option. But the reason donald trump rose in the first place, the reason he still has a grip on the party, is because he has persuaded a significant chunk of the American People who are fearful that theyre being passed bibi changes socially, cultural, economically in society, persuaded them that he is their champion. Thats why he can lie about the election result and get them on believe the lie. Because when they project on to trump that he is a winner, theyre thinking that is victory for them, too. Those people are not the majority of the country but they have a stranglehold on the Republican Party, on the current members of congress in the Republican Party. And that is why those people are pushing liz cheney out. Its not, donald trump is a symptom. Donald trump commands loyalty. But its not about trump. It is about vindicating people who think that theyre losing status and ground and well being in american society. And donald trump has persuaded them that he is the ticket on resisting those changes and he has gotten republicans to go along with him doing that. Charlie, President Biden weighed in on whats. Take a listen. I dont understand republicans. It seems as though the Republican Party is trying to identify what it stands for. And theyre in the midst of significant, sort of Mini Revolution going on in the Republican Party. Ive been a democrat for a long time. Weve gone through periods where weve had internal fights and disagreements. I dont remember ever any like this. Well, i think hes right about that part. Listen, charlie. My adviser of the Washington Post lays out this story through joe bidens eyes. 2019. You will see an epiphany occur in 2021. We need an opposition that is principled and strong. March, i have no idea if there will be a Republican Party. Today i dont understand the republicans. How is he supposed to work with them . By the way, many people have been saying, charlie, theyre never going to work with you. Now hes maybe realizing that. But go on. How is he supposed to work with them . Well, actually, i do think theres some capacity to get some things done. Fortunately, there are still enough numbers and ill talk about my friends and the Problem Solvers Caucus in the house and the senate. There are enough members who represent the swing or marginal districts in states where they have to show that they can reach across the aisle and get some things done. People like brian fitzpatrick, Josh Gottheimer in the house. These people have to demonstrate they can get some things done. They have to. They need crossover votes. So im hoping people like that can develop Policy Proposals like they did at the end of last year on covid that basically forces the leaderships hands. Look, there are going to be a number of people on the republican side who are not going to compromise, who are never going to be there. But there is a critical mass, certainly in the senate and i think there are in the house on infrastructure, anyway. All right, charlie. Well see. I dont know. Im usually glass half full. Not on this one though. Thank you both. Don . Yeah, i got to go, but go quickly, please, sir. Well, look, i just want to say the dominant theory within the Republican Party right now is absolute resistance. We saw Mitch Mcconnell express that today saying he has unanimity from collins to cruz to oppose what the Biden Administration is trying to do. Yep. It is not its not impossible that a small number of republicans could choose to work with joe biden, but theyre fighting badly uphill. Thats the strategy republicans pursued against president obama. Thats the strategy theyve set on to try to pursue against joe biden. And if that is somehow going to change so that a democratic president can get something significant done, that has to be demonstrated. Theres no particular reason to think that will happen again. There are always miracles. We can pray. Thank you both. Thank you very much. I want to turn now to facebooks Oversight Board. Upholding the companys decision to ban donald trump after the insurrection. Lets discuss now. Senior political analyst john avlon and barry schmidt, facebooks former Communications Director and also worked at google and pinterest. Good evening, gentlemen. Thank you so much. Mr. Avlon, this Oversight Board basically telling facebook they need to deal with the mess they helped to create and come up with some rules that apply to everyone. Look, this issue is bigger than facebook and trump. Is social media undermining basic truth in our society . Yes. Among other things, yes. It is a new challenge. Its a new communications form. Its making it more difficult to reason together because people are getting encouraged toward extremism by algorithms. Theyre being offered different versions of reality. So its a challenge i think we need the confront together. This Oversight Board i think took a step in that direction. But the number i cant get away from, after he was deplatformed from the first time, don, after the capitol attack, within one week, one study found a 73 decline in election misinformation. That to me is just clear causeeffect. Thats a real problem weve got to deal with. That should be evidence that perhaps their decision needs to be permanent. Im just saying perhaps, if you have that sort of evidence. Lets ask barry. What do you think of that . Well, i think it is definitely true. I think what is important to look at is what is facebooks role in all of this . And i think thus far, theyve abdicated a lot of responsibility. There are a lot of users who come to facebook believing lies and wanting to see them. And i think they want to serve those users well and not piss them off. I think they dont want to devote the resources necessary to solve the problem, and frankly, i think they want to play indicate the republicans a little bit and do just enough so they can tell democrats they care and let enough through so they can tell republicans that theyre not biased. So weve seen this. This is what you say. You say that facebook, social media is enabling people to be misled in a way that we have never seen in history. Yeah. I think thats right. The scale, you know, theres that old adage. A lie gets around the world before the truth gets its pants on. And with technology, i think it is more like, a lie can circle the Globe Thousands and millions of times before the truth is even awake. And it is all of what john said. Algorithms, all the things that facebook and other social Media Companies pride themselves on. Speed and thats what were dealing with. I dont know if theres a solution. I thought about it. I was thinking about this earlier. Facebook transformed from being a place you share Family Photographs and vacation pictures, i saw my new grand baby, to look at this. Its crazy. Read this news. And its fake and whatever. Why is it, if it is not going to have the rules of legacy journalism, with all the checks and balances, then why allow, john, news, articles, why isnt it a place to share almost in the vein of an instagram . I think thats one of the debates facebook has been having. These new technological uhoh, john. We lost him. Can you answer that for me, barry . Is john back . John, we lost you for a second. Weird. The Companies Need to step up. And also, laws need to match the pace of technology here. But we need to recognize that this is a direct threat to democracy and the ability to reason together, and we cant just pretend that its not happening. It is. So we need to take responsibility, all of us for it. John, this is a New York Times technology columnist. Kevin tracks the top 10 performing links with facebook. This is yesterdays list, dominated by right wing trump supporters. If you look at it last week, the lists are very similar with ben shapiro, fox news, dan bongino making the top ten. Does trump even need a facebook account . Trumpism is clearly all over the platform. I think he wants one. I know he wants to run for reelection. His campaign wants one. This is a way to drive money. This is a way the drive attention. But youre right. Its the way to game the system very effectively. Weve seen populist leaders from around the world to game these systems very effectively to amplify their messages. Among other things, we need much more verification that folks are individuals and not bots. We need to look at the Incentive Structures that have been set up that clearly have been gamed very effectively by some. Doesnt that undermine the right wing argument that social media is censoring them . Yeah. The right wing makes arguments, all kinds of groups are to blame for all kinds of ills, right . But i think actually facebook and other social Media Companies have bent over backwards to try and allow things that they wouldnt normally allow. Mark zuckerberg came up with a News Worthiness Exemption for basically for trump to allow him to continue to be on the platform when he would have been banned if he was anyone else. And if you read the Oversight Boards report, they actually, you know, they dont have the power to overturn facebook policies. But they seem to make a pretty strong recommendation in the opposite direction of what mark did in that people like trump, who have oversized influence should actually have oversized scrutiny. When mark did the opposite and allowed him to say and do things that he wouldnt allow users to do. And similar i think on twitter. Is that a Business Decision you think by facebook and maybe even by twitter as well . I think twitter was profiting off Donald Trumps wackiness on their site and facebook similarly. Yeah. I think it is part profit. I think its part political calculation. It wasnt that long ago when republicans had the white house, the senate and the house, and thats a pretty scary thing to be seen as anticonservative. In that world, and im sure were potentially not far from another of that again. So i think they want to please the politicians and profit from it. Did you want to Say Something . Youre good . I think that is right. I think we just all need to recognize this is a common responsibility and social media can bring people together but obviously also drive people apart. And that democracies pay the price to some extent. Its a tough decision, i think for them. Theyre thinking First Amendment, freedom of speech. That sort of thing. And they look at it that way even though it is a private company that has sort of evolved into a news disinformation site. And perhaps instead of the roles changing so much, perhaps the site should change and what is about and whats allowable on their side. Do you get what im saying . I do. A new study was just released showing the combination of conservative media and social media increased conspiracy beliefs, particularly around covid. It was actually quality journalism and long form reporting that could reason people out of some of those beliefs and make it more inclined to adapt, for example, masks and vaccines. So there are real world effects on this that we need to confront and recognize the current system, it isnt working effectively. Yeah. I would like to add. I think the Social Media Platforms, they use the First Amendment argument when its convenient. They make decisions all the time about what speech to allow. Nudity is not allowed on facebook. It is not illegal but it is not allowed. They make all kinds of decisions about content to allow and not allow. One they make is if there is content that will cause imminent harm or actual harmful it was okay to be antivax and to spread information until people were dying from a pandemic. And i think one thing we can do is ask them, maybe even require of them to take a longer view term of harm before people are dying right now, there is an actual riot at the capitol this minute. Think about what led up to that. And there was a pretty damning report that facebook created itself evaluating its role in the leadup to riot at the capitol. And the two conclusions that they made were one, it was a prime vector for spreading the misinformation that led to the riot and insurrection. And two, that their policies were inadequate and their enforcement was inadequate because they dont take into account things that an individual basis that are largely benign like hey, i wonder if this election was rigged. But as a grand scale and Network Effect actually become very dangerous. Its not a Point Of View they take and so far are willing to take. Listen, i do think that we, meaning the Traditional Media and you guys who analyze us and criticize it, i know we have their attention now. So you have to keep talking to them and maybe do it the way did you with a former president. Thats do it through television. Do it through media. Thank you very much. Traditional media. Thank you very much, i appreciate you both joining us. The power of the truth being tested in ways that are shaking the foundation of american democracy. Republicans trying to undermine reality, refusing to accept the results of the election, trying to make it harder for people to vote based on trumps big lie, and ignoring the facts and spreading disinformation about everything from the Coronavirus To President Bidens Policy Proposals. I want to bring the dr. Cornell west. Professor of Public Flophilosop at harvard university. Thank you, professor. Let me say to you. Im sorry about the loss you recently had. Yes, my beloved mother. For all of our west clan, still fighting. Still trying to tell the truth. We are. And thats what we will do now. And were all thinking about you. So again, our condolences. Appreciate it. Everywhere you look, there is an assault on truth, whether its the gop operating on the big lie, the disinformation spreading through social media, the whitewashing of our racial history. Can you put this into perspective about how dangerous this is to our democracy . Well, you know, brother don, at the deepest in american history, Herman Melville used to say truth uncompromisingly told will always have its jagged edges. Which is to say, truth is always unsettling, always unnerving, including ourselves. So no one group will ever have a possession of the truth. There is a difference between wholesale lies and retail lies. Right now, the Republican Party is wrestling with a neo fascist insurgency. When you talk about trump, hes not an isolated individual. The majority of white fellow citizens in america voted for him. So it is a movement. It is based on wholesale lies. Like White Supremacists ideology, like attacks on jews and muslims and gays and lesbians and the rule of big military. And big money. The Democratic Party has its retail lies. You have Brother Biden and sister harris talking about america is not a racist country. Thats a lie. It is. Why do they have to tell that retail lie . Because thats a political strategy too. So we have to keep track of the fact that truth is bigger than all of us, brother. And anybody who enters in the quest for truth has to be willing to befallable enough to recognize that a greater has full possession. But right now the Republican Party what sister liz is dealing with, because liz has been telling her lies about the iraqi war and a host of others, but she is standing strong against neo fascism within her party. I agree with her courage in that regard, but im very critical of the various lies she has told. But true with biden. Biden told lies about iraq. He told lies about mass incarceration. He told lies about wall street greed. When we approach this, my brother, especially from the black side of town, you know . From the Chocolate Side of town, your whole project has been based on a lie. This aint new to us. Youve been denying us our humanity for all this time. We recognize we can still learn something from this when talking about other issues. And you have a whole lot to learn from us, because we have been telling you truths about your White Supremacy Foundation Stuff that you will lose your democracy if you dont come to terms with your deep racism and with your deep classicism, dealing with poverty and so forth. So we shouldnt get too oempld overwhelmed by this, my brother. Lies have been around a listening, long time, no matter what technology you use. I know what youre talking about. People are willing to lose their democracy, lose their democracy. To what . To keep White Supremacy intact. Look, there is a number of things. Theres greed. Theres race itself, identity, the fear of the future. There is an insecurity about the present. And we have to be able to provide countervailing voices that are more truthful. I would never say i have full control of the truth. Im a human being. Im fallible, right . But certain truths are better than other lies. And we have to have d countervailing forces and movement to tell about the truth about every aspect of america, its empire, militarism, White Supremacy, male supremacy, its class structure, but also the best of america. Tell the truth about the best of america. Thats where melville comes in. Thats where Toni Morrison comes in. Thats where nina comes in. John coltrane comes in. From louisiana, honesty, decency, generosity, serving the others on and on from hebrew scriptures. Thank you, brother. Our time is a little shorter but this is a continuing conversation. Absolutely. Stay strong, my brother. You stay strong. Our deepest condolences. I appreciate your loving words. I do. Thank you very much. So it was a deal struck at this countrys founding. Slaves would count as 3 5 of a person. Less than a free man, woman or child. Counted as property. But used in this count to increase the political power of the slave states. Yet one Tennessee Lawmaker claimed it helped end slavery. The 3 5 compromise was a direct effort to ensure that Southern States never got the population necessary to continue the practice of slavery everywhere else in the country. Know your history. Next. A Tennessee Republican State Representative is facing back lash after defending what is widely viewed as one of the most infamous deals in u. S. History. The 3 5 compromise. Where in slaves were explicitly counted as 3 5 of a free person. Or 3 5 of a man so that the slave states would be able to accrue more political power without having to count a slave as a full person. Infamous. Racist. Take a look. This is State Representative justin lafferty. This is what he had to say about it. We ended up biting a bitter bitter pill that haunts us today, and we did to it Lay Foundation for all this that we enjoy in this country. For as much as we scream and fight and argue, there is no place in this world that i would rather live and call home. The 3 5 compromise was a direct effort to ensure that Southern States never got the population necessary to continue the practice of slavery everywhere else in the country. By limiting the number of population in the count, they specifically limited the number of representatives that would be available in the slave Holding States and they did it for the purpose of ending slavery, well before abraham lincoln. Well before civil war. Do we talk about that . I dont hear that anywhere in this conversation across the country. I dont see anything on this floor today with any malice toward any of my friends on the other side. I say it only because im tired, yall. The people of this nation are tired. If you start looking for trouble, if thats all youre bent on, i guarantee you, youre going to find it. Okay. That is what were dealing with right now. The lawmaker making those statements during a debate over legislation in tennessee that would limit what schools can teach students about racism and privilege. Our team reached out to him for a statement but has not heard back. Lets get the fax. Pineal joseph is here. Professor at the university of texas. We need hours to talk about this. Good evening to you. It is important to know your history here. Can you refresh everyone on the facts of the 3 5 compromise . Please. Yeah, don. The compromise is the fact southern colonies actually wanted to count enslaved africanamericans as one person each for issues of representation. The compromise was that they would be counted as 3 5 of a person. And what that did was give southern slave Holding States more Proportional Representation than their actual citizens who could vote. At the time, women couldnt vote but men could. So when we think about the 3 5 clause, the 3 5 clause is a compromise to create the United States of america and have the constitution ratified in 1787. So the idea that somehow we can turn that on its head and connect the 3 5 compromise to some secret plan by the founders to get rid of slavery and be antiracist is absurd. It is part of kind of history that were facing, that dr. West was talking about earlier. And i would call that a battle between the history of redemption and the history of reconstruction. And redemption is really what takes place after racial slavery and the rise of White Supremacy, starting in pulaski, tennessee, in 1866 with the crazy of the klan, and the reconstruction history is really that multiracial, multicultural history thats going to include the ida b. Wells and the Harriet Tubmans and Sojourner Truths and frederick douglass, alongside white abolitionists as well. So we have those two battles that are continuing until today. Listen, i want to have you back to discuss this more. I needed to you explain the truth about the 3 5 compromise. Again, this conversation will continue. Hes not the first person to say. Colorado senator ron hanks did something very similar. Thank you, sir. I have to go. I appreciate you joining us. Thank you. Thank you. A federal judge delivering a scathing rebuke of former attorney general bill barr. The judge also demanding that the doj release a secret memo documenting an opinion to not charge former President Trump with obstruction at the end of the mueller investigation. In a 35page opinion, judge Amy Berman Jackson accuses barr of being, quote, disingenuous and says the former a. G. Misled lawmakers and the public about the decision not to charge former President Trump with obstruction of justice. Remember, bill barr released a misleading fourpage summary of the Mueller Report and hosted a spin session to get out in front of that report. On obstruction, barrs initial summary claimed that muellers report sets out evidence on both sides of the question of obstruction. But the Mueller Report specifically said it did not exonerate the president and mueller testified to congress that he did not. Youll remember at the time, mueller called barr out, writing a letter to him just after the summary was released saying it did not fully capture the context, nature and substance of the investigation and the conclusions. Mueller also made clear that if trump did not commit a crime, we would know. If we had had confidence that the president clearly did not commit a crime, we would have said so. If you thought it stank of a coverup at the time, so does the federal judge now. Vaccine misinformation circulating online. Cnn goes inside facebook mommy groups where conspiracies could be putting women at risk. When its hot outside your car is like a sauna steaming up lingering odors. Febreze car vent clips stop hot car stench with up to 30 days of freshness. Get relief with febreze. President bidens new goal is to is in the fight against covid19, to get at least one dose of the vaccine into arms of 70 of american adults, by july 4th. But that might be a heavy lift with the hesitancy of a lot of americans to get vaccinated. And some of that hesitancy can be traced back to false information about the vaccine circulating on social media. Including, mommy groups. Heres cnns elle reeve. Whenever there is a discussion in the group about vaccinations or masks, the vibe is disturbed. Really. Yeah. There is a lot of hate. A lot of name calling. Theyll be like, why are you putting this in your body . No, thanks, i dont want to be a science experiment. Theyll tell people, oh, well, you are a he stupid for wanting to get it. One of the front lines of the covid19 Vaccine Misinformation wars is in an unexpected place. Mommy groups on facebook. Do you want to see . Theyre hesitant. There theres trust, generally speaking. Like, what do they say . They are concerned about infertility. A doula runs a facebook called crunchy moms of florida. Shes had to monitor the group much more closely, since covid19 hit. It says just got my vaccination card. And the card reads, go [ bleep ] yourself. So, thats good. Rule number one is novaccine discussion. And rule number six is nomask discussion because a lot of misinformation follows these types of things. And you kind of want to be someone, whos not going to give a platform for any talk thats not factual. Reporter misinformation has been circulating on social media that the covid19 vaccine can hurt womens fertility by either attacking the placenta or by causing a vaccinated person to shed the virus on to women, and somehow affect their periods or pregnancies. There is no evidence of this. And the mrna vaccines do not contain the virus. Unvaccinated women report miscarriages, after interaction with vaccinated people. There was one woman. This is a case that they had, where she got herself that shot. And was nursing her 6 month old and the baby died. Women in their menstruating years, and not, are experiencing severeside effects from people around them having received this jab. Reporter marlene says, those in her group trying to evade bans on antivaccine talk use the term, medical freedom. This is our keyword alert. Wow. Medical freedom. Medical freedom. Medical freedom. Wow. Theyre all within minutes of each other. Reporter pregnant women are allowed to get the vaccine. And it is widely being encouraged. I get asked about this every day. You know, all of my patients, who are either trying to conceive or theyre already pregnant. They want to get the vaccine. Theyre interested. But they have that nagging worry, in the back of their mind. That this could cause infertility. That this could cause miscarriage. And we just know that this is not true. But unfortunately, its such a scary thought, that it just really stuck. The mrna vaccines from pfizer and moderna do not appear to pose anyserious risk during pregnancy. According to preliminary findings published in the new england journal of medicine. But the cdc says pregnant women who get covid are at an increased risk for severe illness, preterm birth, and maternal death. I always talk to my patients about the riskbenefit calculus. We know that there are real risks. If youre pregnant and you get sick with covid. In my mind, the benefits outweigh the risks. Claims that are made about this vaccination, particularly, do target women. Right. They target women. Its funny, because the hesitancy thats shown amongst males as more politically charged. Thats what ive seen. Reporter we were set to interview multiple women who told us they dont want the vaccine but they all bailed. Some saying they feared backlash. Thats not an irrational fear. There is a lot of Shaming On Social Media which publichealth experts say doesnt work. Some of their friends wouldnt talk on camera. Neither would women cnn spoke to in public parks. Influencers turned us down. So, we went to an outlet mall and found this one woman. So are you going to take the Covid Vaccine . At the moment, no, because im pregnant. But i have heard like a lot of stories about losing the baby. Okay. What kind of stories have you heard . I have heard like after the vaccine, they were having, like, issues with the baby. And losing their baby and things. And where do you get news about that . There was a article. Im not sure where. Okay. And what has your doctor said about getting the vaccine . She hasnt said anything. I havent really asked her about it. Yeah. It is completely understandable, to be hesitant. I beat back hesitancy with knowledge. I kind of hope that people, like, will look and see where is this information coming from . Where is the backing of this information . Is it something from the cdc . Or is it some quack doctor, that who knows where he got his degree from . Is it influential, at all, though, to know that there are other crunchy moms who got it . Does that seem to affect them . I am always getting these questions and they will assume, first, that i am not getting the vaccine. Or that i did not. So, its kind of hard to tell them. And so, hopefully, me talking today helps some crunchy mom go, okay, all right. I wont do measles but i guess ill get the covid one. You know . Yeah. Reporter elle reeve, cnn, florida.
