The time, you know, at the height of this were the most restrictive in the country. Yeah. You think a year ago, jim, and just how brutally terrifying the world was at that point with the Infection Rates here in new jersey just astronomical. And in new york and connecticut. And today just a few percentage points, the vaccinations are way up. So we can start to get back to life as normal. I mean just personally this is the first time ive gone, you know, im vaccinated. The crew is vaccinated. I cannot wear the mask on camera. I can just have it in case i go in somewhere. It is different world compared to just a year ago. And now because of all of that, starting on may 19th, were going to start seeing a lot of these restrictions go away. All those restrictions on outdoor activities, those will go away starting may 19th. Restaurants will be able to operate to the fullest they can as long as tables can stay six feet away from each other. Theyre going to lift restrictions on indoor gatherings to 50 people. If the funerals or different events inside, political gatherings and the like. You can have 250 people. And the big venues with more than 1,000 seats, they can start to operate at 30 starting may 19th. And mta, the New York Subway System going to go 24 7 again. That will be a huge shot in the arm to the city there. So really starting to feel the effects of the vaccination. Some people still concerned about Wearing Masks outside or not Wearing Masks. Look, people have been ptsd for a long time over this. You know, there was such a traumatic year. Whatever people are comfortable with, great outdoors. But governments and society and shops and the world, were starting to come back the at least here in the tristate area. Jim . Something to smile about. Miguel, thank you. Yeah. Well, we also learned this morning that pfizer expects to file for full fda approval, full fda approval of the vaccine by the end of this month. Cnns Elizabeth Cohen joins us now. Just maybe hard for folks at home to keep track of the language here. The vaccine has been deemed safe and distributed to tens of millions of people under Emergency Use Authorization. Tell us what the change to full fda approval will mean for the vaccine and for folks at home. Right, jim. Most of the medicines you take in your full life have full fda approval. Bla, they have a bla from the fda. However, the vaccines weve been taking against covid19, they had to be done so quickly to get rid of the pandemic, they were done studiously. They were done in the right way. But still, they were done relatively quickly. And thats Emergency Use Authorization. So lets take a look at what this means practically. To some extent, its just bureaucracy. In other ways, there are practical applications. So again, pfizers vaccine currently has only Emergency Use Authorization. This full approval which they are expected to get could make employers and schools more comfortable requiring the vaccine. Also full approval could make some vaccine hesitant folks say well i think i trust this more. It actually has full approval, not just emergency approval. Jim . Poppy . So the next agegroup down including your daughter i think who is 14, agegroup 12 to 15. How soon can 12 to 15yearolds in the u. S. Get the Pfizer Vaccine . First, lets talk about how excited we are to get vaccine. The Pfizer Vaccine to 12 to 15yearolds, they will be getting an Emergency Use Authorization likely next week. So thats very, very soon. Now as far as The Little Ones go, poppy, like your children, for 2 to 11 years olds, pfizer expects to file for Emergency Use Authorization in in september. Now to The Little Ones, the fda is going to call in an external panel of experts to look at that data because they are so little. But still, that data hasnt come in yet. Theyre still studying churn that young. Poppy . Jim . All right. Thank you very much. Lets bring in our doctor, a senior scholar at Johns Hopkins center for health security. Its great to have you, doctor. Especially on some good news. What does this mean for all of us . Right . Assuming i know its an assumption that most kids do get vaccinated by october. Does that mean Herd Immunity . If they dont, can we not achieve it . . It certainly gets us closer to Herd Immunity. Right now only a specific proportion of the population is eligible for vaccine. If if you can expand to 12 and 15yearolds, that is more people vaccinated. That is less opportunity the virus has to infect people. Thats a way to have extra curricular activities at schools be safer. But remember, Herd Immunity is an important threshold. I think if you look at israels data, when they got to 40 of the population totally vaccinated, they had a decline in cases. The percent positivity is below 1 . I think well get the benefits of control of the pandemic before we cross that threshold. We should still strive for it. I think we still have control of this virus. We wont have hospitals in crisis. We certainly dont have hospitals in crisis right now. Doctor, im going to give you awe moment to talk to parents of children in that agegroup. You can imagine them coming to your office and saying why do i have to get my child vaccinated . The data shows theyre extremely unlikely to get serious disease from covid19. Now we know the science shows you have to get the population vaccinated to truly bring the pandemic under control. But tell us how you would answer that question. From a parent. First of all, i acknowledge it is very true. Children are spared from the severe consequences of this disease and that there are other Infectious Diseases like flu which might be more threatening to them. We vaccinate against many disease thats dont necessarily have a strong impact on children. We dont want our children to get infected. It is true they dont have severe disease often, there are some subsets of children who do get severe illness. Thlt is not something you want to get. Its not something that you would want anybody to have because there is some proportion that will get long haul stoumz. We dont understand that. But this is a safe and effective vaccine. We knew children are not going to be severe limb pacted and not major spreaders. We want to do a whole new equation to see is this something worth doing in children . It looks like it is going to be. This something i think the parents should take advantage of and i think its something that will benefit their childrens individual lives. On schools, and the zegs they all have to make in School Districts on mandating this vaccine once its approved for their agegroup, is there any science based argument not to mandate it . I ask because here in new york city you have so many vaccines that are mandated. Mmr, polio, rubella, the list goes on. This is a virus that is not deadly to children, it will be disruptive. If you have extra curricular activities like football and cheerleading and basketball and wrestling, all of that is going to have a higher covid19 risk. You dont want that impithing on your ability to conduct school. Sometimes its completely linked to the extra curricular activities. We want schools to stay open. This is one way that schools can continue their operations and i think it is something that we would want to have mandated at most schools. I think once it gets approved in that agegroup and full approval this is going to be something that becomes very normal. Its going to become a Childhood Immunization and something that looks more like the other Vaccine Wez Vaccines we give children all the time. We talked about rubella. We vaccinate kids against it to keep it from coming back. Doctor, you know, big picture here. Were seeing a lot of communities even some of the most conservative, most hard hit by this lifting restrictions. How should they take that in . Are there things they should be less comfortable with Going Forward . Or is now the time to emerge from emerge back into normal life . These vaccines remove the ability to cause serious disease, hospitalization and death. They allow you to reclaim your prepandemic life. I think people really should be able to go out there and do as much as the Risk Tolerance allows. There is a lot of flexibility now. This is what we hope for. This is what were waiting for. I think its tomb to get back to normal life and to get more people vaccinated so it becomes even easier to do that. Those are nice words to hear. Right . After 15, 16 months of covering this story. The is she going to survive this one based on the korvegtss youre having . It seems unlikely at this point. We dont know the final. This is a secret ballot election. The vote hasnt been called yet. A Growing Number of republicans have raised concerns. Privately indicated they supported her last time and unlikely to support her this time. Kevin mccarthy is arguing she is not doing her job as the conference chairwoman, the person in charge of the message of the conference. She is arguing that its not the fact she is one of the ten republican whos voted to impeach donald trump, of course that, got her in hot water with the former president along with her calling out Donald Trumps lies that he won the election. Back in february he supported keeping her on his team. But now he indicating the opposite. Just this morning he made clear why he says that republicans want her out. There is no concern about how she voted on impeachment. That decision has been made. I heard from members concerned about her ability to carry out the job as conference chair. To carry out the message. We need to be working as one. Have not heard members concerned about her vote on impeachment. Its more concerned about the job ability to do and what is the best step forward that we can all Work Together instead of attacking one another. He does have the power to call a quick vote and push her out of the leadership position. The first time hes able to do that is next wednesday when the conference meets hbehind closed doors. Hes moving in that direction as republicans are calling for her ouster. He is offering her no life line to keep that position. So pretty clear as tension is growing between the two, im told he has been furious with cheney that things appear to be very grim for her and keeping this job. Two could be servetive women talking about a conservative woman who thinks its important to Tell The Truth. As do you both all the time. So thank you for being here. Mary catherine, Ohio Republican representative Anthony Gonzalez put it this way, if a prerequisite for leading the kofrnts is continuing to lie to our voters, then liz is not the best fit. Liz isnt going to lie to people. Shes going to stand on principle. How striking is that to hear that essentially hes saying its a prerequisite to lead to lie in the party . Thats why liz cheney is pushing back so forcefully. Shes making the point. Im not going to stop saying this. It is the truth. Voters dont always love it when you tell them hard truths, do they . So that is the issue that the Republican Party is dealing with. But she has shown, look, despite professional costs potentially to me, im going to keep saying this thing. And, look, last time the reporting was such that she might lose the last vote. But she did not. So i think this is one of those things were standing tall and going through is the only way out. You have to have a backbone and this is what i believe. Im not going to shut up about it. But it is tricky. The other thing is i think it can end up the problem for republicans is that you do have to talk about policy. As shes saying shgt right . I know that in this talk with paul ryan, she no doubt talked policy but thats not the story. This is the story. Right . Right. I think there is for the Republican Party, they have to learn how to do both. So i mean, margaret, my colleague zachery wolf put it well in the piece this morning. He said facts are hazardous things for certain republicans at the moment. And the polling from cnn in the last few shows it. Only 23 of republicans polled believe that joe biden legitimately won the election. Listen this to michael wood who got creamed apparently for telling the truth about the big lie. Here he was. Sometimes can you run a great campaign. If you dont get the dog food, you wont get many votes. Thats what happened. The dog food was speaking the truth though. Right . Yeah. Yeah. Its very unfortunate. Did he refer to voters as dogs . That will be a first step. I didnt read that way. But maybe. Maybe. I mean there is an issue where you have to communicate even if youre disagreeing with people on a fundamental issue. You have to communicate with respect to them. Even wh even while youre speaking that truth. Okay. Fair. And we all we can think about the deplorables comment and the other party as well. Margaret, what is your reaction to what all of those things i just mentioned say about what part of your party or guiding principle can win . Look, what we know and what you demonstrated in that clip is there is a large portion of the conservative base of the Republican Party that absolutely demands that republicans believe that they lie and repeat that they lie and say it over and over again. Donald trump won the election. Really won the election and this was a fraud. Biden is an illegitimate president. That is a prerequisite. It is the cult of personality around donald trump and everything he believes. That gets you a safe spot in the republican in face of the Republican Party. We see that not just in texas. You see it in arizona. One of the houses of the state lecture actually passed a bull that would enable electors to be recalled after the Secretary Of State sanctions the election. I mean this is happening in every state across the country. This is happening in congress. Congress reflects that. Will Kevin Mccarthy needs to be the leader here. He enabled the party to be a Diverse Party with multiple voices, multiple viewpoints. By the way, some women. Liz cheney now represents one of them. One of 31 women in the house of representatives. This is on Kevin Mccarthy. Liz cheney is doing everything she can to Tell The Truth to be a beacon of truth for the party. And he better understand that the more Marjorie Taylor greens and the more lies propagated in his conference, the less power his party is going to have in the future. You look at arizona and the crazy in that Arizona State party and you look at the fact they have two Democratic Senators now. This is a red state just ten minutes ago. All right . If republicans want to have a future at the National Level and suburbs and be a party that is a big ten party, to be competitive in national elections, lets win a president ial election with a popular vote. Dont say its a lie. Kevin mccarthy has the power to do that by helping liz cheney keep her leadership post. Hes not going to that. Thats clear. A conservative columnist in tte Washington Post writes nothing about this is normal. The gop is increasingly defind not by shared beliefs but by shared dilution. Knowing repeating a lie and act of immorality is now the evidence of a republican if you de fidelity. Im not interested if you think hes right or not. Why . What is the core driver behind this . The why . They made up another story. That is what is happening here. And, look, i think every Marjorie Taylor green as Margaret Points Out is going to overshadow eight Michelle Seals from california. Right . And that is bad for the party. You can talk about schools that have not been nop a year. That is a message that can work as opposed to pretending that biden is not the president. That is not a message that works. It is, i think an electoral problem for republicans if we are a cult of personality for donald trump. The problem for republicans is also an electoral problem if you tick off too many trump voters. So that is the line that they were attempting to walk. But you have to Tell The Truth first while doing it. I would offer as a Counter Example imagine if if in 2020 your message as a democrat was to go around and remind people that the muller report found that trump was not a russian plant who clueded with the russian government to become president of the united states. His crime, just one of many this hospital in india state. Oh, my child, he says, oh, my god. My baby. Inside the entrance, his son is fighting for his life. Gasping for air, his body convulsing. There are no doctors attending to him. The handful of medical staff working in this ward are stretched thin to breaking point. This hospital is completely overwhelmed. The doctors say that they have about 55 beds and currently theyre treating more than 100 patients. And you can see people are literally just lying on the floor, desperately hoping to get some medical attention. 32yearold says she has been here for four days. Begging for oxygen that has not come. Im getting anxious, she says. No one is listening to me here. You are struggling to breathe . Im unable to breathe freely, they sells us. No one is taking care of me. In next room, more than 20 patients are packed in it tightly. This is what passes for the intensive care unit. Family members have taken on the role of primary caregivers where medical staff is unavailable. This man complains no one will change his wifes soiled bedding. Then there is a commotion. Will someone please call the doctor this man shouts. His mother, 55yearold appears to be slipping away. Her sons work furiously to revive her. A doctor comes in and tells them to stop crowding her. The family is inconsolable. Weve been here for six dawes and only today we got the ventilator for my mother, he tells us. The oxygen is out. We had to bring in oxygen cylinder. Its a story we hear again and again. One man approaches us pleading. His wife cant get a bed. No ones listening to me. I tried everything, he says. Please help me or she will die. Im not a doctor. Im so sorry. I cant help you. Another man tells us his wife is struggling to breathe outside. They wont let her in. We spot the Hospital Administeror and ask him what is going on. This man says his wife is dying outside and needs oxygen. We dont have oxygen. Reporter he insists that oxygen isnt the problem. But he says they are desperately short of staff. Those who do work here risk becoming patients themselves. They move a dozen bodies a day. Have you ever seen anything like this before . Are you not worried to wear protective gear . We should be wearing proper ppe but even the doctors dont have it so how can we . We hear screams coming from the icu. She has flat lined again. Her son desperately pumps her chest. A doctor comes in. And takes her pulse. But its too late. This time there is no point in trying to resuscitate. The agony of her sons is shared by so many in this country. Failed by a Health Care System on the brink of collapse and a government accused of mismanaging this crisis. Just a few hundred yards away same hospital complex its a very different picture. People wait to be vaccinated following the Prime Ministers announcement that anyone over 18 can be inoculated. The Hospital Administrator and local Journalists Eagerly Stand By to capture the moment. We were just in the hospital over there. It was shocking to see it was shocking. Right. Because the conditions are so bad here. Why do you think india is hit so badly . The Hospital Administrator interrupts and warns him weve been asking too many questions. Sir, you i dont need to coach him what to say. Shes telling hum im what to sa. Were trying our best. Do you accept that the government has failed its people in the handling of this crisis . No. Because ive been talking to a lot of people and i have to tell you, people are angry. People feel that this didnt need to be so ugly. The situation is not only bad here. Were trying to find solutions, he says. Were increasing the number of beds and were working tirelessly around the clock. But back in the covid19 ward, the impact of those efforts is not yet being felt. His body is left for nearly an hour before it is finally moved. Indias leaders may promise that everything is being done to end this crisis, but for now, there is no light at the end of the tunnel. You saw that hospital. Its facing shortages of just about everything, beds, drugs. But most acutely, doctors and nurses. There were five doctors and nurses looking after more than 100 people. Indias government has now announced that its actually drafting medical students, people who are in their final year of studying medicine will now be brought in to try to help confront this crisis. A lot of people, poppy and jim, saying its too little too late. And to your important line of questioning there about the responsibility of the Modi Government in all of. This we now know there are scientists that warned him and the government about a surge in cases just last month. Those warnings went largely ignored. The Vaccine Rollout is poultry. Really the majority of people there have they told you yes, they do feel failed and ba abandoned by their government . I think there is a very wide sense that modi is someone that had this aura of political invincibility. That has been tarnished. There are a lot of people here who are angry. The there are a lot of people who are critical of the governments handling of this whole crisis. The there are people who cant understand how its possible, poppy, that three weeks ago Prime Minister modi was standing before a crowd of thousands, none of them Wearing Masks, and essentially praising them for turning out in such high volumes. So there are questions to be answered. What the political fallout will be for Prime Minister modi remains to be seen. Question for you. What happened in those places to shut it down were widespread shutdowns, right, and then a rush to vaccinations. I wonder what is happening there now to keep this under control. What immediate steps are being taken to save lives like this poor woman who lost her life as you were watching. So there are lockdowns implemented across the country. The government has said that the navy is now getting vfdinvolved. They have come up with this thing called operation oxygen express. Huge amounts of oxygen are being deployed via indias railways to try to get to the hardest hit cities. But as of today, jim, were still seeing people going online saying they cant find oxygen.
