We start tonight with Breaking News. A tragedy off the California Coast with a desperate search for survivors going on right now as we speak. This is happening near san diego. Emergency Officials Say a boat flipped over with more than two dozen people onboard. Some of those people are confirmed dead. That death toll going up in just the past few minutes. Cnns Josh Campbell is near san diego with details. Officials are about to hold a Press Conference with more information, but at this point what can you tell us . We are waiting for that Press Conference to get Additional Details on the response from officials and what they are seeing there on the ground. We know this accident has resulted in fatalities, that coming from officials there in the san diego area, telling us three people onboard the vessel have died. There were over 20 people transported to local hospitals in and around this point loma area near san diego. We dont know the condition of those injuries. Were told that many of those were superficial injuries, but three people are suffering from serious injures. As far as the cause of this, we dont have Information On it yet or the circumstances surrounding the vessels Route Of Travel. The san diego area, there near point loma, its an area known for Shipping Lanes and there are tours that happen in and around there and its off the coast of a u. S. Navy Air Station Facility that is home to aircraft carriers, so theres lot of activity in and around that area as well, and we dont have information about what this vessel was doing and what this Route Of Travel was, and u. S. Customs and boarder protection have in the past interdicted certain smuggling operations, and everything is on the table right now, and we are waiting to hear from officials about what the specifics are about of this vessel, but three people are dead and over 20 people taken to the hospital. Pamela . We are waiting for that information. I know right now its tough because you are not working with much, but do you have any idea of what type of vessel this was . We dont know. We have seen some images on social media that appear to dee picked a debris field that would indicate this was not a vessel that was sea worthy, for example, of Military Grade or some type of shipping or pleasure craft. Again, there have been incidents in the past where you see different types of vessels used to transport people illegally that are not sea worthy, and too early to confirm that at this point but it doesnt appear to be some large sea going vessel, and we hope to get more details on this particular boat and its Route Of Travel. Now, turning to a party in disarray. The republicans caught in a circular firing squad. Last night republican senator, mitt romney, narrowly avoided a censure at the Utah Convention but could not ignore a chorus of boos. You know me as a person that says what he thinks, and i was not a fan over the last president s character issues, and im also no fan this morning fellow republican senator and trump critic, susan collins, had this to say. I was appalled. Mitt romney is an outstanding senator that surfs his state and our country well. We are not a party that is led by just one person. Meanwhile in arizona the state party is barrelling ahead with the skewed audit of the 2020 election feed into the big lie cooked up by donald trump. Arizona republican cindy mccain slammed the effort today. Its ludicrous. This also comes from a state party in arizona that refused to be audited themselves on votes casts in their own party communications, so you know, its the election is over and biden won. I know many dont like the outcome but elections have consequences. I, you know, this does not surprise me, you know, things are just aloof and crazy out there right now with regards to the election. For the second time in as many weeks, former president george w. Bush sounded exacerbates as he warned about the partys future. You know, its its to me thats it basically says that we want to be extinct. But i know this, if the Republican Party stands for exsluicetive tea, its not going to win anything. And liz cheney is in danger of losing her Leadership Party because shes out of step with the Capitol Attack and trumps role in it. The rise of trump loyalist that led to the rift in the gop is against this backdrop, and 70 of republicans think biden was not legally elected. The election that biden won fairly and squarely. Last night i spoke to Roger Marshall of kansas. He was one of the six senators that voted against certifying the electoral results for two states hours later, and i asked about consequences of decisions like that from gop lawmakers and if he had any regret. Its time to move on. Its time for this country to heal and its time for a spirit of forgiveness to be happening. We would all love to heal and move on from this sameful episode of our country, but here 8 thing, the reality is republicans and their followers have not moved on from the election, and those officials who are complicit with their silence should be held accountable. And here in arizona, theres a partisan audit of ballots, and this year republicans in almost every single State Legislature have introduced new Voting Restrictions and are using lies like rampant voter fraud, and trump is claiming the actual real results of the election will come out any day now. Lets see what they find. I wouldnt be spiurprised if th found thousands and thousands and thousands of votes, so we will watch that closely, and after that you will watch pennsylvania and georgia and you will watch, michigan, and new hampshire, they found a lot of votes up in new hampshire, because it was a rigged election and Everybody Knows it. Backtrack, not true, just have to say that, again. And the same gop propaganda that head to a deadly attack on the u. S. Capitol, as you see it has not gone away. Thats why i challenge every single republican i have on the show who voted to overturn the election, and they dont get to have Everybody Sing Kumbaya until they stop saying and supporting things to overturn this. As more and more rioters have been held accountable, reality must be denied. Thats the approach of the pro trump media and allies throughout congress and on capitol hill. Deny reality. What they need to do is make a hierarchy, the 170 republicans who voted to over concern the election, the most serious deniers of reality in the election versus the least, and perhaps have different policies for them. I think you have to have a discussion within each ko organization, and each show, and what is the policy . Do we not allow them on the air until we have disavowed their original views . The one thing that is that not doable is denial, which is it has been practiced, i think, by the media as well as so Many Republican politicians, as brian said, when senator rick scott can just waltz on to abc news and George Stephanopoulos this week and face zero questions about stop the steal and his vote to decertify the votes in pennsylvania, thats the kind of denial among the media class, and i dont think that does anything good. But to pull the camera back a little bit, pamela, we have a twoparty system and one of the two parties is antidemocratic. The routines and assumptions of Mainstream Political Journalism is not built for that situation. The real problem is not just these kinds of questions and not what to do about the stop the steal politicians, its about what do we do when we have a twoparty system and one of them is antidemocratic. Brian, this is something you have thought about and written about as well . Pamela, you deserve credit for not letting go of this, and dana bash has thought about how to handle this issue, this antidemocratic movement. Its fundamentally true that we are in the battle, as biden has said, about democracy versus autocracy. But to pretend like its happening is the worst way to handle this story, and when i watch fox news and they have moved on entirely from the riot and acted like it didnt happen. Can you imagine those channels in 2001 . Behind me is the rebuilt trade center in the monitor behind me, but to think about those networks in early 2022 pretending the towers had not been taken down by terrorists, and what happened on january 6th was a lower magnitude, thank god a lower magnitude, but we see an invasion of power by extremists in our own country, and its something folks dont want to think about because its so embarrassing and uncomfortable and frightening. I wonder, sometimes, how the folks at this rightwing networks, how are they comfortable ignoring it . How are they comfortable ignoring this threat to democracy . I dont know is the honest answer, pamela. Its so interesting, they are ignoring it and still pushing gop propaganda about the big election lie. Right. Thats the thing. You are seeing it play out in arizona. Arizona, yeah. With the audit going on. I spoke to some politicians pra privately, and they say so publicly that biden was elected justly, and so you know, by journalists ignoring the issue and not bringing it up, are you giving republicans who dont want to be held accountable in their party exactly what they want . As you have seen on this show, i put it out there to invite republicans on and hold them accountable. What do you think about staying silent, jay . I think its an when they invite politicians on and dont confront them, its something that is goinging on in the background. The Republican Party convinced its base that the election was stolen to such a degree that the stop the steal idea is kind of running the party, its sort of taken root and its gotten its own momentum behind it, and regardless of what Party Leaders try to do, if they try to move o. As Roger Marshall kept saying today in your interview with him, and theres something about it, and its like a virus that has caught fire and in a way its bigger than the party and the party cant even stop it if it wanted to because so many of its voters had been persuaded by the party itself that this happened, and if the election was stolen, that is a major crisis on american democracy that is ongoing. You can see how it kind of drives people crazy. In a lot of ways the party is leaching power to direct itself because its lies have been so successful. Its interesting how circular it has been for these elected officials, right . By going along with trump and the Conspiracy Theories they convince the base that the Conspiracy Theories were true, right, and now they are using that as justification for some of these voting laws across the country. We are seeing a record number, right, on this big lie . And you also have the other republicans that know is a total sham but are too afraid to say anything because they are too far in.
