Food officials announce they are focusing more on Vaccine-confidence'>Building Vaccine Confidence and not just on Vaccine supply, because supply is beginning to outpace demand for the first time in two weeks the Sevenday Average of vaccinations has fallen below 3 Million schmotz a date. Lets get to sanjay gupta, so much to talk to him about. Now that the cdc is aware of the 16 cases of Blood Clots, do you expect them to still recommend the use of this Vaccine . Well, you know, i its obviously guessing here. But i do think they will still recommend the use of the Vaccine. Two things to keep in mind. First of all, ultimately for the authorization what they had to show was do the benefits outweigh risks . You talked about the numbers here. Overall, were talking roughly if you add up the numbers seven out of A Million women under the age of 50 developed the problem. For women over the age of 50 it was much rarer than that. And one man in the Clinical Trial they werent sure if it was directly associated with the Vaccine or not in that situation. But when you put it together, i think they will still recommend it. They may have certain Calf Yats as in have you had a history of low platelets or this type of specific Blood Clot before . And also just to send a message to people, look, if you develop symptoms, headaches, blurriness of vision, something unusual like that, talk to your doctor. But the doctors know there is a specific way to treat the problem. Thats a lot to answer your question. I think the answer will be yes. It will be released. But with those sorts of caveats. The recommendation was a pause from the recommends to states to the walgreens and cvs appear the rest. Is it your expectation if in recommendation is now to continue Use And Distribution with these warnings or restrictions that en masse all return to using this. And how soon could they be delivered or injected . Yeah, no, victor, i think it would be all of the same distribution channels. I think it would happen right away. And in some cases i think people are a little surprised its taken this long, because even though this represents a small amount of the overall Vaccine going out we did the calculations. Its about one out of 17 shots tp it still serves an important purpose. I get a lot of emails from parents of College Students who they were more reliant on this because its a single shot thing. Maybe they werent going to be on campus for the second shot. My point is the various communities that could benefit from this, they got shots as you mentioned, ready to roll, 9 Million or so. I think the same distribution channels, and right away, victor, you know, tomorrow, potentially if this actually does get released again. Sanjay, lets talk about where we are now in the country with number of people vaccinated. So 52 of american adults have gotten at least one Vaccine. That means that 48 are not yet vaccinated. Right. So i mean i know that you and all the doctors we talk to and Public Health officials want them to get vaccinated. So sfl some sort of model that we could use to help reluctant people, some sort of public Safety Campaign thats worked in the past . I think about mothers against drunk drivers. I think about a. I. D. S. Awareness. Is there something that worked in the past that they will rely on now. Its an good important question. I dont know if we have the graphics showing who is more likely to get the Vaccine. If we have it we can put it up. We poe about 60 of the country says im willing to get it or ive gotten it. The Blue Line in the middle i think alisyn is who you are referring to, the 17 , call them the movable middle, people waiting and seeing. The bottom green lines are people saying no way and only it required. Theyre harder to move. The Blue Line how do you address those people . If you go back historically back to 2009, h 1 n 1 there was a lot of Vaccine-hesitancy'>Vaccine Hesitancy back then as well. What they ended up learning from the experience was that frankly more than celebrities or politicians it was peoples own Health Care providers that ended up being the most the people who would sway the movable middle the most. Your own doctors, nurses, Health Care teams. Thats really where a lot of the attention has to be focused. As you probably know. Even among Health Care workers there is some degree of Vaccine-hesitancy'>Vaccine Hesitancy, 20, 25 . So really focusing on the population and then letting them serve as the ambassadors. Im only saying this because thats historically what the data has shown in terms of best efforts in terms of conveining the movable middle. Sanjay, from the start of the Vaccine-rollout'>Vaccine Rollout you and really every medical professional weve had on air has said that get whichever Vaccine you can. But considering now that were at the Tipping Point of supply outpacing demand, there is the now we expect a Restriction Or Warning coming with J J. And some people who are a bit reluctant, is now a time to be a little more selective . Would you say that Vaccine-shopping'>Vaccine Shopping is okay and understandable at this point . I think as far as the the one Shot Versus Twoshot regimens. There is people have a hard time getting in for One Shot, two shots. Transient people. College students who may be moving with a short time. That can be more challenging. But, you know, i just urge people looking at the data, a lot of times what people say is that one works better than this one. With regard to moderna and pfizer, they are very similar, nearly identical in terms of how well, they work. Johnson johnsons data doesnt look as promiseding as that. But you have to remember Johnson Johnson was Trial Date at a different time, later time, when in some ways the disease of the pandemic was more severe and more variants. Point being, if you were to have trialed Pfizer And Moderna at the same time you Trial Date Johnson Johnson you may have gotten similar effectiveness results. So overall, in terms of effectiveness, i think they really are similar, very effective which is great news. But if its a oneshot thing or for some recent cant get the two shots and J J may be a better option. Dr. Sanjay gupta, great to see you thanks so much. You too. Upon the heels of the Derek Chauvin Verdict says a new poll says majority of americans support greater scrutiny of police conduct. The poll says 60 of americans believe more should be done to mold police accountable. 33 say too much is being done to interfere in how Police Officers do their job. Weve been following two deadly police shootings of Black Americans just this week. In the North Carolina Town of elizabeth city, Community Members taking to the streets, protesting Wednesdays Police Shooting of Andrew Brown jr. And demanding public release of Bodycam Video there. Brown was shot by a county Sheriffs Deputy while authorities say they were trying to serve him with an arrest warrant. And in ohio we are learning more about what happened in the moments before 16yearold Mckaia Bryant was shot and killed by a columbus police officer. Our reporters have the latest developments. Lets start with Brian Todd to explain where things stand with regard to the growing calls to release the Bodycam Video. Brian. Well, alisyn, the town getting frustrated. Community leaders are frustrated. The family of Andrew Brown is increasingly frustrated the Body Camera Footage hasnt been released. This is the way people in the city express frustration. This is the first Daytime Protest engaged in since wednesday evening. All protests have been in the Evening Period and they have come down this street, Airinghouse Street where they have come down the last evenings to disrupt traffic and disrupt commerce in a peaceful way i have to add. The protests have been almost 100 peaceful orderly and well organized. But you see they blocked cars exiting there. Police vehicles over there where they blocked that intersection down there. This is the way they are expressing frustration, because they have not gotten the transparency theyre asking for from the d. A. s office, the Sheriffs Office in releasing that bodycam footage. We also can tell you that cnn a short time ago spoke to Andrew Browns aunt, a lady named Betty Banks who told us what her nephew went to her and her family. He was one of the sweetest people youd want to meet. He loved his family. God knows he loved his grandmother. But just to see a man thats so somber, and so in love with his family and his children, and when they are taken out like this, it really does something to you that you really cant explain. So Andrew Browns family not only mourning this afternoon but also, again, pressing for answers they dont believe they are getting. The question is, when is that Body Camera Footage from the deputies going to be released . The d. A. s offices and sheriff said this is a matter of a Court Order needed to release that videotape. But several entities in town we know have petitioned for that order for the release of this alisyn. Its a Waiting Game we are playing. But the town is getting more and more frustrated here the transparency they are asking for has not been forthcoming. Alisyn. Brian thank you for the reporting from the ground. Lets go to aathena jones in columbus, ohio where authorities released more video in that case. We want to warn you that the video is graphic, tough to watch. Aathena what have we learned from the video. Hi, victor. There have been a few videos released some from authorities. One from the Neighbors Security Camera from across the street. On that footage you can see the incident take place, officer riordan officer Nicholas Riordan arrive in his patrol car, get out of the car and within a few Seconds Fire those four shots ultimately killing mckaia bryant. But yes youre right the columbus Police Department has been releasing videos the last few days. Recently thursday. That was simply a Police Dash Cam footage from a cruiser arriving a few moments after the incident took place. It doesnt shed new light on what took place tuesday afternoon. Really the most important set of videos that have been put out by the columbus Police Department are the ones they put out Tuesday Night about five and a half hours after the initial incident, both normal Speed Video and slow Motion Video where you can see what took place. In contrast to what we hear from Brian Todd in North Carolina there has been a completely different approach to a situation like this by the columbus pd. We are hearing from the Police Department and from the chief, and the mayor of columbus its important to put out as much information to the public as quickly as possible with so that the public demanding answers in a case like this can get them. Thats what we are seeing from columbus police, even if the most recent videos dont add much to the understanding, its part of the effort to be more transparent. You know, go big or go home, i mean, that is definitely the theme of the first 100 days of the biden presidency, no question about it. And you know, the way to answer that question is to look at each thing individually. Gun safety, you know, its been lange wishing on Capitol Hill for decades literally. And so if he is going to get Something Done Hes got to get involved and make it a priority. People at the White House understand that. Infrastructure, its going to be very tricky considering the fact that even the democrats he needs particularly on the senate side, Joe Manchin in particular isnt so sure about his plan, because it is so vast. The Climate Crisis and the things that he prescribed could be different, alisyn and victor, and the reason is because they are aggressively courting business, aggressively courting World Leaders to make this an allout, sort of crossgovernment all across the government goal. And the thing thats so striking about it is that yes, that is the goal in terms of action. But first and foremost you can hear it in their rhetoric, its a goal to rebrand the Climate Crisis, not as a sacrifice that people have to make but as an opportunity. Youre going to hear that you heard it the last two days and youll hear it over and over, including ton at the cnn townhall, that this is about jobs, this is about movement, that this is about opportunity. The big question is whether or not people are going to buy what theyre selling with regards to this rebranding. Yeah, dana, you talked about infrastructure, which is a big part of this climate package, getting all of that passed. And you mentioned senator manchin. But the progressives In The House, who were not especially excited about the outcome of the covid Relief Package they didnt get everything they wanted are they in a mood to deal or compromise now with in new climate Push And Infrastructure push . No, not at all. I mean, you know, you alluded to this victor, they werent in the mood though deal with the fringe. But many of them, forgive me, sucked it up because it was their new president s first big priority and an emergency situation, because you are talking about a pandemic and getting money out there as quickly as possible. And youre exactly right. This could be different. But theyre likely going to run up against and into the same reality that they did before, which is not only is the democratic majority In The House much more narrow than anybody on their side anticipated before the election, it doesnt get any closer in the senate. They have to play ball with the Joe Manchins of the world. The Kirsten Sinema of arizona of the world if they have any chance of getting this through, never mind the next step in a potential compromise which is working across the aisle. Dana, you sat down with vicepresident Kamala Harris and talked about police reform. What did she tell you . So interesting, i got to talk to her during a week where, you know, obviously this country has been having a reckoning for some time. But it really reached a certain climax this week. So i spoke with her about her particular role inside the White House given how historic the fact that she is there even is. This verdict is but a piece of it. And it will not heal. The pain that existed for generations, that has existed for generations among people who are experienced and firsthand witnessed what now a broader public is seeing because of smartphones and the ewe. And thats why congress needs to act. And thats why they should pass the George Floyd Justice in policing act. So, the next question is, how involved will you be in order to make that happen . Because, you know, compromise needs to happen sometimes with the Big Giant Push from the White House. They seem to be, you know, having a Handsoff Approach right now in that, and letting the very real negotiations Go On between very serious lawmakers from Karen Bass on the House Side to Cory Booker and republican Tim Scott on the republican side in the senate. And you know, they seem to be making some progress, which is a lot more than anybody thought anybody could say on this issue or frankly so many issues across party lines, not that long ago. Have received at least One Shot of the covid19 Vaccine. But some republicans have consistently told pollsters they wont be joining them. Scientists believe that 70 to 85 of the population must be fully vaccinated to Reach Herd Immunity and return to prepandemic life as we knew it. As of today were only a fraction of the way there. My next guest is a republican Congressman And Doctor who mass actually administered covid shots to help reluctant people get onboard. Congressman Brad Wenstrup is here with me. Thank you for having me. Lets the put up the Monmouth Poll when asked if people plan to get vaccinate the, mirro 43 of republican spontsds any will never get vaccinated 2 of independents, 5 of democrats. The basic question, which are so many republicans reluctant or refusing Vaccines . Thats a good question. Thats one of the things we engaged in. I was on an event with Frank Lunts who you may be familiar with. He had people on the Call Trump supporters but were hesitant to take the Vaccine. And it was interesting because as we sat and i was talking as a doctor, as opposed to a member of congress, we explained how Operation Warp Speed worked, how we werent cutting corners. We were cutting out some of the bureaucracy. And actually more people took part in the trials than normally are in trials before something is approved. And just to explain some of the science. And one of the take aways that we got from the people said, you know, im more inclined now. Most people said they were more inclined now after they listened to doctors and also listened to Chris Christie was on the Call Mo got sick from covid. They understood the risk of koevrd. At the end they said im more inclined now. We want to be more educated not indoctrine eighted. As you know politics has unfortunately played a big part in this. As a doctor i wish it was not. Theres been things about the virus that we thought were going to happen go ahead. Congressman, i watched that focus group. You know, you had some people who went from 80 to against it to maybe half and half. And some people said i was a zero and still a zero. But democrats trust their doctors too. I mean they also talked about the spouses, independents talk to spouses. There is something unique in the numbers consistently that republicans are more reluctant. So have you gotten to what Gnat Ele that element is . Not exactly. But i do go back to the idea of talking to your doctor. Thats what we want people to do. Talk to your doctor, get the information. Yeah. There is a lot of people that dont trust government. Ive always made this case. But, its interesting of like who you trust. Ill give you an example. You said ive been out giving shots. Ive done it with the national guard and in uniform and ive done it just on my own. I have both urban and ruler. We had folks from a Retirement Community we went on the bus got the history and did the paperwork and gave the Vaccine. I go in uniform, the lady sees my name. And says can i get a selfie with you and i said sure. I gave her the show the. She said i dont agree with you on one thing politically but im grateful for your service and you here giving me this shot today. So that mindset is different for a lot of people. Its a Trust Factor i think that weighs with a lot of people. Let me ask you this, because in the question of leadership and trying to convince people, as you are to get vaccinated, republican senator of wisconsin, Ron Johnson was on a Radio Show Today and talked about the Vaccine. And this is what he said. The science tells us that Vaccines are 95 effective so if you have a Vaccine quite honestly what do you care if your neighbor has one or not . I mean what is it to you . You got a Vaccine. Scientists tell you its effective. Why is this Big Push to make sure everybody gets a Vaccine . He asks that rhetorically. Im going to ask it directly. Whats it to you that your neighbor gets vaccinated . Well, Public Health. I mean, thats the important thing. As is whats going on in america and dont we all want to get back to being open . You know, i dont want to force people into taking a Vaccine. But i want them to have all the tools they need to understand why its important. Whats the impact of statements like that from members of congress when youre trying to get people vaccinated and Ron Johnson is saying, essentially, get your Vaccine and mind your business. Well, you know, again, i think it all comes back to educating people on the importance of Public Health. I served on our board. Educating your colleagues . Whats that. Educating your colleagues . Well, thats what we are trying to do as a doctor as caucus is educating everyone on the importance of this from a Public Health standpoint. And, you know, its across the board. You know, anecdotally as ive been out and about i cant tell if anyone is republican or democrat. Im not going to ask in in situation where im there as a medical provider, right so the whole part interesting and obviously of concern and. But theyre also consistent. Theyre also consistent in showing the shy percentage of republicans reluctant to get it. Ive got to get to one more thing before we go. You are the cochair. Okay of. Of the gop doctors caucus. 18 doctors you signed this letter, sent it to the speaker of the house to lift the covid restrictions In The House. Most of them. You didnt say all of them. The layer demands quote in era of higher Hygiene Pretense Muster end. Why is now the time to Lift Restrictions when the Public Health experts in this administration and in congress are saying that this is not the time . Well, some of them are saying that it is the time, the cdc has said if you are vaccinated you can gather together in these types of groups, keep your distance. No, no, congressman thats not what the cdc says. The cdc says that unvaccinated people vaccinated people rather can be with other vaccinated people without masks without distancing. Right. But also that the if there are unvaccinated people from multiple households that you should still distance, wear masks and take precautions. You dont have. But victor. You dont have all vaccinated people in the chamber or staffs, right . Right. And so victor thats you hit the nail on the head. You know, i look at the congress as a body. And the decision was made to prioritize members of congress to get the Vaccine. Quite frankly there was some people you know as a Doctor And Soldier i needed to get it. But there were a lot of people that took the approach like, look im not as vulnerable. I want the Vaccine going to somebody elderly and with comoeshdties and i want to wait. I think thats honorable. But we were given the opportunity to get the Vaccine. And what we dont know is how many people actually have and have not. And. If you dont know why is now the time to lift the restrictions . Well, because we should know that. But you dont. And we should be able to know. I know that thats the point. Shouldnt you know that before you ask, if you can now get together in small offices and stop the social distancing . It seems its the wrong order. The caucus sent a letter to the speaker of the house saying Lift Restrictions. And you dont know how many people are vaccinated. I appreciate that. But if you look at the intent of the letter one of the things that we asked was what are things that we can do as physicians to aid new this process so that we can get back to being a more functional body. And thats what we asked. It was a very respectful letter. And we were asking, because we got the opportunity to be vaccinated, and some of the restrictions for vaccinated people have been lifted, should we be taking a look its not demanding anything per se. Its asking, what more can we do to try and get us back to be a more functional body . Because i think you you will find on both sides of the aisle all agree the more that we can interact with Each Other in person, the better off we are and the more Wick Function cohesively as we have in the past. That was the intent of the letter. So youre right when you say we dont know. And i would like to know. Now there are hipaa rules that people devonte have to say whether theyve been vaccinated or not. Certainly is. We put guidelines in if youve not been vaccinated what precautions you should be taking as a member of congress and if youve been congress what rishts you can have.
