Were getting shots of the crew in orbit. Looking for that zero G Indicator. Cant seem to see it in this shot, but we have a minute to go until we have spacecraft separation. Dragon traveling at nearly 17,000 miles per hour at an altitude of 124 miles. Again, the Fourperson Crew of endeavor is in orbit right now. Less than 30 seconds until we have spacecraft separation. Ten seconds to spacecraft separation. We should hear words from the core here in hawthorne once we have successful separation. [ applause ] spacex, have a great rest of your trip. Let them know youre safe. Thanks for flying. Falcon 9. Thanks very much. Were glad to be back in space for all of us. Well send our regards to crew one when we get there, thanks. Absolutely stunning views from both inside the cabin, seeing the excitement of our Fourperson Crew Inside Endeavor and watching Endeavor Drift away from the camera on the second stage as the earth passes by on an orbital sunrise. Endeavor you cut out, if the question was if youre go to open visors, you are go to open visors at this time. Copy. Thanks. 13. 5 minutes past liftoff, the crew is in Orbit Traveling at nearly 17,000 miles an hour. Gary, i dont know about you, but that was a great countdown, everything sounded great, right on time, actually a little ahead of time. And Service Section checkouts. Got a good orbit out of falcon 9 and first stage landed on the Drone Ship and were in the sunlight over the atlantic ocean with the dragon spacecraft, all in all a great day. I think everybody is jealous of the crew in orbit right now. These views from the cameras are absolutely stunning. It was great to see our Crew Members get into orbit. They performed successful checkouts around dragon and next milestone will be the deployment of the Nose Cone, that will be a five minute process, but that will be the forward bulk, and prepare them for check out. Theres a Phase Burn. Theres five major burns needed to get the Dragon Crew up to the Space Station. So the first Phase Burn is Coming Up in less than 35 minutes. Jesse, i dont know if you can see the zero G Indicator but im told its a penguin. Im trying to look for it. Im looking for it, too. Keep an eye on the lefthand screen. Meanwhile, the dragon is configured for a Nose Cone deployment. Stand by for when that sequence starts. The Nose Cone itself opens just beyond 90 degrees, about 105 degrees to expose the forward Bulkhe Bulkhead dracos, four of them at the top of the dragon will do the bulk of the work when it comes to firing the engines for minutes at a time to increase the dragons speed, altitude and fazing to catch up with the Space Station in the next 24 hours. Look what we can do. Look what we can do. A great morning for humanity, a tough morning for those who are flat earthers, we witnessed the launch of the spacex mission, f four astronauts are on their way. Were live at the kennedy space center, and myles obrien is with us. Rachel, lets start with you here. This has been very exciting, but just explain to us exactly what weve been watching. Reporter today was an incredible day here at kennedy space center. This was the third crewed mission of Spacexs Crew Dragon spacecraft. It was pretty historic here today because this falcon 9, the rocket that Spacecraft Endeavor flew on, it had scorch marks and soot on it before it took off today but thats because it flew back in november with crew one, so it was a flight proven rocket, also endeavor it too had already flown to space. It took that historic flight nearly a year ago with Baob Behnken and Doug Hurley taking that flight. So that had never been done before, the systems already having flown to space and they had to do thousands of checks to ensure that it was, in fact, safe for the crew to board and fly today. As we all saw, Todays Countdown went off without a hitch. A gorgeous day here at kennedy space center. Those astronauts on Board Weve gotten to hear their voices and see them in Spacecraft Endeavor, theyre making their way to the international Space Station traveling over 17,000 miles an hour, Theyll Rendezvous in about 24 hours but theyre busy on that journey to the international Space Station, theres about five burns that will take place in order to get them to rendezvous just precisely right. Also, they have to sleep on board. Weve just seen that the zero G Indicator is a penguin. Thats a tradition that the astronauts on board decide what that zero G Indicator is going to be. We dont know the story behind the penguin yet but with two, it was a dinosaur, The Last One was a baby yoda. As you know, today is a multinational crew onboard, two nasa astronauts, megan mcarthur, whos the wife of bob behnken, shes sitting in the same seat her husband flew in. Shane kimbrough is the commander. We have a Jaxa Astronaut on board as well as an Esa Astronaut on board, Thompas Pesquet and akihiko hoshide. So multinational Crew And Something thats unique. Theres interest in the astronaut food. I have to tell you guys i had the opportunity to taste some of the food that tomas is bringing up with him. When you have a multinational crew they have the opportunity to bring their own cuisine on board, the Specialty Meals made, theyre not eating them every day, but i have to tell you, i have the packets right here. Tomas is bringing Beef Bourgonise so theyre having fancy meals. I have to tell you guys, they were not bad. It was pretty tasty, so theyre getting some fancy meals for sure. Weve come a long way since tang, i dont think theres a doubt about that. Myles we watched the first manned Spacex Launch together. This is the third with a used rocket and capsule, or as nasa likes to say, previously owned. How significant is this moment . Well, its a cream puff, of course, john. No question about it. But its significant for that very fact you just mentioned. The Shuttle Program was supposed to be reusable. And in some respects it was, but it never really delivered on the promise of reusability in a way that made the cost of getting to space cheaper. It was a finky vehicle. The orbiter came back but it required all kinds of work to get back to space. Sure the Rocket Boosters could be reused but they had to be fished out of the water and that was a difficult and time consuming process. Elon Musk And Spacex is proving reusability in a way that drives down the cost to space. And thats a big deal because it opens to enterprises weve been hoping for for a long time. Those of us who like space and makes it accessible in a way we couldnt imagine. It used to be the back of the Napkin Cost of getting anything to space was 10,000 a pound. Elon musk is driving that cost down and its exciting to see it. Professor, you actually talk about the cost and its really interesting. Its what, one pound you carry into space is your weight in gold . Im bad at math. Whats the equation there and the squignificance of that . Its 10,000 per pound to put you in near earth orbit. Thats your weight approximately in gold. Thats why back in the 1960s, the Moon Program faltered. It consumed 5 of the entire federal budget. 5 of every dollar you paid in Income Tax went to the space program. That was unsustainable. Thats why this is a Game Changer because its going to drop the cost of Space Travel by a factor of two, maybe five, opening up Outer Space for commercial ventures, for Mom And Pop space tours and maybe even you and me. This is a Game Changer. Were entering a new era. If you were to take a Car And Junk it after one use, cars would be very expensive. But thats what we do to rockets we dump them in the ocean after one shot but reusable rockets is a Game Changer. Its going to drive down the cost and open up the heavens for commercial ventures, Space Tourism and you and me. It is the new era as the professor is showing, this new era of Space Travel. This crew 2 mission, is this better . Cost wise clearly it is, but at large is this better . Yes, it is. Among other things, with pointing out here brianna, its a lot safer. We lost two crews in the shuttle era. And there was no realistic way for them to get out of a spacecraft in an emergency. This particular craft with the capsule sitting right on top of the stack, good place for it to be, nothing can hit it on the way up, no debris from other parts of the rocket. But it has an escape tower, so it can separate itself from the rocket itself on the way to space to allow the crew to get back safely. So that ejection, that Crew Escape Capability is a hugely significant difference. The idea of separating the Human Beings from the cargo is a good idea. The Shuttle Idea was make it one big thing, put the payloads in the back, the crew in the front. They were trying to do too many things at once and it made for an unsafe way to get to space. So its cheaper. Its reliable and it ultimately its safer, which is the most important thing in the end. Huge. So important. Myles wonderful to watch these with you. Rachel, thank you so much. And professor, appreciate your expertise as well. Protests erupting overnight in another state after the Shooting Death of a black man by police. Were just now learning who george w. Bush voted for in 2020, and it is not either of the two candidates you were thinking of. Also a Pennsylvania Republican who sought out Voter Fraud, found it, carriied out b republicans. Good morning to our viewers here in the united states and around the world and frankly those above the world this morning since weve been watching the launch of the spacex capsule. Its friday, april 23rd. Overnight protesters gathering in elizabeth city, north carolina, demanding Body Camera Footage of the shooting of Andrew Brown jr. Officials say a Deputy Shot and killed him while serving him a search warrant. He was shot in his car not far from his home. Its not clear whether the deputies fired on the car before or after it began to move. So far police are refusing to release body cam footage, they claim it is not public record and cannot be shown without a court order. New details about the shooting of the 16yearold makhai bryant. According to a woman taking care of her, bryant and two others were arguing about a messy home prior to getting in the fight. Cnn spoke to bryants biological mother. She was taken from me. She was taken from me. What would you like people to know about your daughter . I want the world to know that she was beautiful, humble, loved to look after people. All these cases are different, they all have their unique issues. But they also raise questions about policing in america and the question this morning, will congress take action. A bipartisan group of lawmakers say progress is being made on a Police Reform Bill with republican senator Tim Scott taking the lead and trying to push a compromise with democrats over the issue of qualified immunity for officers accused of excessive force, whether or not they can be sued. Its a sticking point. Yesterday Mitch Mcconnell announced that scott will deliver the republican rebuttal to president bidens joint address to congress next week. Joining us is david challen, great to see you, welcome to new day. Good morning. We changed the show just for you. I love it. I love the new look. Tim scott delivering the republican response, Tim Scott in the center of these key discussions over policing reforming. What are we seeing and why . Those things are connected, i think. Think about the week we just had in america after the year we just had in america as it relates to policing issues, racial inequities in so many facets of american life. And so, having the soul africanamerican republican in the sole africanamerican republican in the senate make the response makes sense in terms of what theyre trying to put forward. The reason i think its poli poli politically savvy, Tim Scott, he was an ally of president trump. In no way does this pick get the ire up of the trump forces in the republican party yet it allows Mitch Mcconnell and mccarthy to understand the moment this speech will take place in. We also learned, as weve been hearing from george w. Bush that he wrote in Condoleezza Rice in 2020, this is a revelation he offered up, along with rare criticism of the republican party. I dont think it should surprise us that anybody in the Bush Family did not vote for Donald Trump, we saw this in 2016 as well. But putting in Condoleezza Rices name and then revealing that publicly, those are two different things and George Bush is on a migssion right now to ty to influence the future of the republican party. Hes got a book out there doing portraits of immigrants and trying to tone down the rhetoric inside the Immigration Debate in this country. And when hes been on this book tour, hes had probably some of the harshest words for the republican party ive heard to date. In the same interview he said he wrote in Condoleezza Rice, he started backtracking a little bit on the criticism of calling the republican party made up of isolationists and protectionists he said he perhaps painted too broad a stroke. But you observed george w. Bush better than anyone i know, john. This is the most raw political talk ive heard from him in his post presidency. Its as far as he has gone in criticizing his own party. As far as Condoleezza Rice goes, that strikes me as doing something because you know youre going to be asked about it later on and you want a better answer than im not going to tell you, right. And you Cant Vote for the democrat because youre a member of the Bush Family so you want to find an answer that works for you politically going forward. Lets talk about texans in the news, david. Senator Ted Cruz hes criticizing this long Shot Effort going nowhere by some democratic lawmakers to increase the size of the Supreme Court from nine to 13 justices. Listen to what hes saying here. You didnt see republicans when we had control of the senate try to rig the game. You didnt see us try to pack the court. There was nothing that would have prevented republicans from doing what theyre doing other than respect for the rule of law. You didnt see them try to rig the game, david. You saw them rig the game. Actually, like literally block a nomination for months and months, and not only that, Ted Cruz is on the record praising comments at the time about how a court can work efficiently without nine members without confirming at that point merrick garland. There are certainly long historical precedent for a Supreme Court with fewer justices. I would note recently Justice Brieer observed the vacancy is is not hampering the court from doing its job. Clearly this is just hypocritical, beyond hypoc hypocritical. On its face hypocritical. If youre looking in consistency in political rhetoric from Ted Cruz youre going to have a hard time finding it. To go out and hold a Press Conference and slam the democrats for trying to play politics as he sees it with the makeup of the Supreme Court, acting like that wasnt what republicans was just doing, it boggles the mind sometimes that its either they forget that Video Tape exists or they said it in front of cameras and its recorded. But as plain as you made it, john, obviously Ted Cruz believed you could manipulate the court, change the numbers on the court and not have It Impact because he told us so. Clearly think maybe it doesnt matter that theyve been saying something else before, perhaps theyre right. I think, you know, time will tell on that. Thats right. Josh hawley, david, was the only senator who voted no on the bipartisan antiasians Hate Crime Bill that passed, it passed 94 to 1 yesterday. He said, the bill turns the federal government into the speech police. He, of course, is the only one who sees it this way, in such a way that it would be, you know, a net negative to vote for this. Whats going on here . Whats going on is that Josh Hawley is trying to plot his political future. He has an eye on a potential president ial run. Hes been the senator that has voted against more of the Biden Cabinet nominees than any other senator in the united states senate. He has decided a path to no to anything. Seems to be where he thinks hes going to meet with the most political success inside a republican primary, right. And so, being the singular, sole senator to stand even something against that has near u unan unanimous support in the senate to stop antiasian hate, he thinks that will serve him by being a wall of opposition to anything coming from the democrats. Well see if Theres Anything that he will vote for. Thank you for being with us this morning. A Pennsylvania Republican who wanted to overturn his States Election results said he found a few cases of fraud after all. But heres the thing, they were committed by republicans. Plus a veteran tasered by Police Inside his young daughters Hospital Room. Well have his story Coming Up. On the navajo nation, our people endure a lot of challenges. It wasnt a matter of if covid would reach our nation, it was a matter of when. I was able to join a Leadership Team of 12 indigenous women to coordinate relief for my community. It was pivotal that i had verizon, so i could safely and effectively deliver supplies to them. This is how we are standing up for our people and protecting each other. Developing this morning, a stunning revelation from a Pennsylvania Republican who pushed the Big Lie Of Mass Election Fraud in his state. In an interview with the Pennsylvania Capital Star Seth Grove is asked, who committed that fraud in pennsylvania . Grove answered, right. Republicans. But its still Election Fraud. It doesnt matter who commits it. But i will say theres not like this Mass Amount of fraud thats going to shift hundreds of thousands of votes. When asked about his role in propagating the big lie, grove responded i Cant Help people believe everything on the internet. Joining me now, Republican Philadelphia City commissioner al schmidt. Nice to see you. I think people will remember you from when ballots were still being counted in philadelphia you were in public saying let us do this, the count is going well, everything is going according to plan. When you hear a republican lawmaker in your state say out loud, there was fraud, yes, there was fraud but we were doing it, what are you supposed to think . Well, its certainly frustrating from the standpoint of an Election Administrator in one of the biggest cities in the country, here in philadelphia. To hear people say they are so concerned about restoring confidence in the elections but really the biggest thing that anyone can do to restore confidence in the Election And Election results is to obviously stop lying about them. So he continues to say that we need to be careful, im just asking questions about whether the elections are fair. But you point out theres actually something insidious about continuing to say that. I think you hit on something very important. I watched all the hearings in the house and the senate, and i testified in front of the senate and my office and i have testified in Front Of House committees about elections since the election as well. And its really about raising questions. There are far more questions than there is evidence of any Voter Fraud at all on any scale that would have made any difference. Just raising the questions alone seems to be, rhetorically, a tool thats used to kind of conjure up these ghosts or phantoms and then to come up with solutions for problems that dont exist. To make this more clear, they keep saying we want to know the elections are fair, we think the elections are rigged, we think Theres Evidence of this, were asking if Theres Evidence of fraud. Then they have the gal to say there are all these questions out there about whether the elections are fair, but theyre the ones asking the questions with no evidence. Right. And in the hearings. I really think theyve done a pretty thorough job. They had a lot of hearings with a lot of people testifying. You didnt hear from at least that i saw any of the Election Administrators suggesting there was anything that required legislation that would, you know, crack down on this this alleged Voter Fraud. It was about how do we improve elections and how do we make structural changes to lessen the opportunity for people to lie about them. Commissioner you are not running for reelection. To remind people what you went through, i want to play a little bit from a discussion we had while the ballots were still being counted in philadelphia. Listen to this. I have seen the most fantastical things on Social Media making completely ridiculous allegations that have no basis in fact at all. And see them spread. I think people should be mindful that there are bad actors who are lying to them. Bad actors lying to them. So after everything you went through then commissioner. After everything youve gone through, really at the hands of people of your own party, do you still consider yourself a republican . , you know, ive been a republican longer than Donald Trump has been a republican. And its strange that, you know, youre referred to as a rhino and others are referred to as rhinos simply because they know and tell the truth that the election was fair and transparent. That seems to be the Litmus Test right now is if you are willing to keep perpetrating or perpetuating that lie. We appreciate you being with us, thanks for your time. Thanks for the work youve been doing. Thank you. Thank you, sir. A marine veteran is suing police after officers tased him inside a Hospital Room in front of his family, including his young daughter. We are happy to hear your daughter has made a full recovery, that is obviously most important hire. Important here. Officers where they stressful. You and your Attorney David Lane for joining us, for sharing your story. This morning, Chinas Government has responded to a cnn investigation, one that shed light on one of great humanitarian crises. Last month we told you about children ripped from their families. Beijings policy towards muslims ripped apart thousands of families. Chinese authorities deny abuses of civil rights, claiming their actions are justified. David culver has the story. We began looking into this after the parents of these children reached out to us, desperate for answers and hopeful they might be reunited with their kids. We took their concerns to chinese officials throughout our news gathering effort, sending them dozens of detailed questions about the family. We didnt hear back. Since the broadcast of our story, however, the Government And State media have launched a campaign to discredit our reporting and claim the parents are strterrorists. Its a familiar site, families showing up on Air And Online in chinese State Media stories and posts. Here a 10yearold is telling state broadcasters, shes living a happy life in her grandparents house, along with her younger brother. But just days earlier when we found her in old town, telling her our colleagues had interviewed her father, her reactions were quite different. But amidst her Innocence And Awareness not to say too much, she told us she had not spoken to her father since 2017. And when we asked her, what would you want to say to him if you could talk to him . I miss him, she later told me. Can you tell me some of what youre feeling . I dont have my mom with me right now, i dont have my dad either. I just want to be reunited with them, she told me. We later showed her father the video of our encounter with his daughter and parents, he watched from his home in australia. Overcome by grief for the years lost. What kind of country does this to people, to innocent people . Reporter more than a week after our story aired in a written statement sent to cnn, the chinese government accused him of influencing his wife with extremist religious and violent terrorist views. China claimed she returned to the country with an assignment of encouraging others to join overseas Terrorist Groups. Its locked on the outside, so unless theyre gone for the day. Reporter the authorities added his wife, who we tried to track down, was sentenced to nine years in prison last june. The charge, inciting ethnic hatred. Cnns request to see additional details in the Court Verdict was rejected. He released a Video Statement in response to chinas statement, calling it laughable and pushing for his wife to be freed. My demand for the chinese government to release my wife and so many other innocents. Reporter cnns report last month highlighted the plight of another family living near rome. Theyre trying to reunite with their four children still. Last year, chinese officials stopped the kids from flying to italy after they escaped from shanghai, they were sent back to live in a state orphanage. Reporter after the orphanage we headed to a school, eventually an official asked for 30 minutes to get back to us. That was two hours ago. We later made contact through video chat. Do you want to be with them . Do you miss them . I do, he says. He answered quickly and kept looking offcamera, someone was directing him to answer. Tell them that you see your sister every day, The Voice said. Despite the pressure that the children face every day, they risk sending out a Photo Message to their parents, the four of them lined up, holding a sign in chinese saying dad, mom we miss you, a rare glimpse of an uncensored truth. The children say a State Media Team went to film them at the orphanage, a video was shown online with an edited interview with the Eldest Sibling who said my life is colorful and happy every day. The chinese government told cnn the four children are leading a normal life, attending school. They allege the parents abandoned them to become key members of a violent Terrorist Group but declined to provide evidence. Their parents told us the chinese accusations are baseless. The eldest boy has been in touch with his mother. He told them he and his siblings have faced repeated interrogations since our attempt to visit them. They tried to send a note to officials asking to join their parents in italy. Their case has caught attention since our story aired. Italian officials have been debating a resolution on condemning human rights violations. And following the u. S. And other countries in labelling chinas actions as genocide. Even with beijing becoming increasingly forceful and pushing Back Criticisms of its policy, the parents hope that added international pressure will help them reunite with their children.
