Announced. Hello . Hi. How are you doing . How is gianna doing . Feeling better now. Nothing is going to make it all better, but at least now theres some justice. Right. And, you know, i think, my dad is going to change the world, hes going to start to change it out. Yes. Amen. Going to change it now. Its incredible. An incredible thing. I wish i were there to put my arms around you. Watching every second of this and the Vice President. Were all so relieved. Not just one verdict, but all three. Guilty on all three counts. Its really important. Im anxious to see you guys. I really am. Were going to get a lot more done. Were going to do a lot. Were going to stay at it until we get it done. Hopefully this is the momentum for the George Floyd Justice and Policing Act to get passed to have you sign. You got it, pal. That and a lot more. A lot more. Joining me now is george Floyds Brother Philonise floyd. And floyd Family Attorney ben crump. Thank you both for being with us today. I know this has been a long and painful journey to this point yesterday. Philonise, you were in that courtroom. What was it like to hear the verdict . It was biblical because i was first of all, i was pacing back and forth before i even went into the courtroom. And my wife was like, whatever you have to do to be comfortable, just do it. If you need to pace back and forth, do it. So i did. And when it was time to go into the courtroom, i prayed for over 30 minutes because it took like 30 minutes before the judge and the jury even came out. But the moment i heard guilty, guilty, guilty, i was excited. It felt like i had just won a championship. It felt like the world had won a championship because africanamericans, we feel like we never get justice. And we always feel its just us. But for the officer to be held accountable, that was a major step in this country. Ben, you have been fighting this fight. What message is sent to police, to americans, to africanamericans by this guilty verdict on all three charges . Brianna, it is our hope and our prayer thAt This will set a new precedent. So when we say with Liberty And Justice for all, that means all of us. Africanamericans, hispanic americans, asianamericans, native americans. All of us. That we can live up to our high ideals of equal justice under the law. We pray that is the precedent. That Police Officers will now know thAt They have to treat us like they treat our white brothers and sisters, and they Cant Police us and protect to serve everybody else. Philonise, youve said this is not just justice for your brother. Since your brothers death, you have struck up you seem to have found some comfort in a friendship with emmett tills cousin. And im wondering how you are seeing this moment as a moment in history. Its big. This is historic. You have to understand that, to me, emmett till, he was the first George Floyd. It just wasnt any cameras around. Thats the only thing that changed. The cameras. The technology. It helped open up doors because without that, my brother just would have been another person on the side of the road left to die. Its the moment that were in right now today, this is monumental. This is historic. There has never been a case of this magnitude. And people all over the world came out for what was right. Im talking about put their lives on the line through the pandemic. Covid. And they all came to one conclusion that its not about black, its not about white. Its not about asian. And its only one race. And thats the human race. And the world let it be known that we all can breathe again because justice for george means freedom for all. It does feel thAt There was a humanity that was communicated in the trial that america received. You know, thAt They absorbed when it came to understanding your brother as a person, as a human being. And you mentioned the outpouring that youve received. Youve seen the crowds who have gathered in support. Youve also received a call from President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Have you heard from anyone who else has reached out to share their reaction and their comfort with you . Yeah, pelosi. Speaker of the house pelosi. We had the governor. We had the Senator Congresswoman Sheila jackson lee. Shes been behind me for so long and shes pushing the issue. We have to pass the George Floyd Policing Act. And she runs at a pace that i never thought At The age that she is. Every time i look up, i tell her, hold on. Slow down. Let me take this battery out your back. Shes just like the energizer bunny. She just keeps going and going. But we need people like thAt Thats going to fight and Reverend Al told me, hey, weve got to keep fighting. Thats what were here for. I didnt ask to be here. Attorney crump, he came and he just to my knowledge right now, Derek Chauvin, hes understanding whAt That means right now. Ben, theres been so much focus on the bystanders that day who were begging for George Floyds life, who testified passionately about whAt They saw. And that included a teenager who was just, At The time, 17 who captured the video of George Floyds death. How are you reflecting on their role in this Verdict Today . I think it was so crucial the bystanders. Everybody from the first 911 operator who saw the video to Donald Williams who painted that picture in court comparing the Fish Suffocating and dying from lack of oxygen to George Floyd dying from being deprived of air because Chauvins Knee was on his neck. All the way to the 9yearold. I have an 8yearold daughter brooklyn. When that other 9yearold girl said he asked them nicely at first but he still didnt take his knee off his neck. Your heart just broke because they all had humanity. The only people who seemed not to have any humanity was Derek Chauvin and his fellow officers who would not let George Floyd take a breath. And were better than that, america. And i think thats whAt This verdict signifies so much to the wo world. We are better than that. We can make a better world for all of our children if we just start trying to treat each other with humanity. Philonise, the Defense Predictively tried to put the onus for what happened to your brother on your brother. They were not successful. Why do you think that is . Theyre assassinating someones character. Everyone has seen the video. The video is a staple for what police Officers Shouldnt do. They should all be held accountable, and thats why were pushing this George Floyd Policing Act because we need to end qualified immunity. Have the officers have their cameras on all the time. The Noknock Warrant for breonna taylor. You have to think about eric garner. She still hasnt got justice for her son. My brother. His blood is on that bill and thats the no chokehold law. So we have to stick together and continue to fight because this world is a place that we supposed to be united and stand together. What are you expecting, ben, when it comes to the other three officers now . I expect, just like chauvin, thAt They will be held accountable for their actions and the role they played in killing George Floyd. What we want is just equal justice under the law. The same thing that George Floyd being a white american citizen we expect that, brianna. We dont want it to be two justice systems in america, one for black america and one for white america. What we want is equal justice for all american citizens. And so thats whAt The police should face if it was one of our white brothers and sisters. What would the sentence be . Thats exactly what it should be because George Floyds life matters. And philonise, you have justice. You do not have your brother. And nothing is going to bring him back. This verdict doesnt bring him back. Do you think thAt This is a step in the direction of getting this country to the point where its not something about getting justice after the fact. Its about preventing deaths. Do you have hope thAt This can effect that change . Ill always have faith. I pray a lot so im going to speak everything into existence. But what happened to my brother, it was a crime. He was tortured to death. I dont want any more George Floyds. I dont want there to be any more Daunte Wrights or any more ahmaud arberys. We should be able to go, while free, and not be killed because of the shade of our skin color. It just made me start an institution called the philonise institution for social change. Were turning our pain into purpose. And i will make sure i see that my Brothers Legacy because he was a defining moment in time that people will always look at because hes a symbol now because you have to understand, and you can make federal laws to protect the burden which is the bald eagle. You can make federal laws. And George Floyd has set the tone for that. Thank you for joining us. This is a huge day. A momentous day for you. Thank you for sharing part of it with us . Thank you. Thank you. Theyve been through a lot the last year. Just minutes before the Derek Chauvin verdict came down, there was a deadly Police Shooting in columbus, ohio. A 16yearold girl was killed. Body Camera Video shows a chaotic scene and its difficult to discern what happened. The officer appears to have arrived on the scene in the middle of a fight. There are still many questions to be answered. Ryan young live in columbus with the latest on this. Ryan . Yeah, john. A tough story. One of the reasons why this Body Cam Video might be out so soon is because there was such an outcry from the community. Social media push something of the narrative here. Police wanting to show thAt Their officer they felt may have been justified in the shooting. The reason why, they believe, is when he arrived, he saw some teens fighting. And he saw a knife in the hand of Makia Bryant and he felt he had to. Let me show you this video. Its tough to watch. I want to warn our viewers. Its also tough to follow because it happens so fast but if you focus on the girl with the jeans and the black shirt you can see whats going on as the officer approaches. Take a look. Whats going on . Hey, hey get down. Get down. Get down. [ gunshots ] [ bleep ]. Just very tough, obviously. Four shots there. It was reported that she called for Police Help but despite continuing to escalate even as police arrive, now the Police Department here in columbus actually released a Slowmo Video to show sort of the parts of whAt The officer was dealing with. Roll that right now so you can see whats going on here. It shows thAt The officer had to make a Splitsecond Decision according to the Police Department because that knife was being wielded back toward another person. So they felt like they had to make that move. Now theyve been explaining this. People took to the streets very upset about this. Listen to the mayor of Columbus Talk about how this has impacted the city so far. Not just the mayor. Im a father. The city of columbus lost a 15yearold Girl today. We know, based on this footage, the officer took action to protect another young girl in our community. But a family is grieving tonight. And this young 15yearold Girl will never be coming home. John, we know so many people in this country are hurting right now. They have so many questions about Law Enforcement and the role thaT Everyone is playing in this national story about how we move forward with policing. Obviously, this community has a lot more questions ahead of it in the future with the shooting of this 16yearold with so many people in the community asking why and, of course, the Police Department saying, maybe they had to, to protect another teen. Well have to see how this plays out today. Ryan young, thank you for being with us. Joining us is ira graham, a neighbor of the young victim of this. Thanks so much for being with us. We just saw the Body Cam Video of the shooting released by the Police Department and the slowed down version, it appears in the slowed down version there may have been a knife in makiyah bryants hand. Youve had a chance to look At This. How does it line up with what you learned, what people have been saying in the neighborhood about the incident . Well, when it happened yesterday, and i went outside, the relative of the deceased explained to me thAt There were a group of kids who had came over to fight makiyah and that makiyah in defense of herself, Drew A knife and in the midst of that, a Police Officer pulled up and just proceeded to shoot four times into makiyah which ultimately killed her. It sounded At The time as if makiyah was merely just trying to defend herself in a situation where she was overwhelmed with people trying to attack her. Now since thAt Time, i have had a chance to look At The video, and i must say, it seems to show a little bit of a different story. Its obvious, in my opinion, from the video, that makiyah, At The point in which the Police Officer approached was the aggressor. And she was wildly going after multiple other teenagers. And i must say, the slow Motion Portion of the video, in my estimation, clearly shows that she was in Mid Swing with the knife going after a second teenager when the cop shot her. I can certainly see why the Police Officer chose to stop her. Now whether or not less lethal force could have been used, whether or not a taser could have been chosen instead of a gun, i dont know. But i do know that with makiyah having that lethal weapon in her hand, she did need to be stopped. You know, i want to just say, condolences to the family of makiyah bryant. No family should have to go through such a tragedy as this. So i want to say that just off the bat, but in this particular instance, i think its a little bit different than the other instances weve seen in that it appears as though makiyah was in the process of trying to stab a teenager. And that could have led to the death of a teenager. So i really wish these young people would think twice before they do things and they would learn better skills for handling conflict resolution. Sometimes its best if these folks came to her house, maybe she should have stayed in the house rather than confronting them. But its very, very unfortunate and very, very sad. I have an 18yearold teenager. And always advise him about how to handle conflicts. And this is an example of what can happen when conflicts are not handled properly. And, you know, its a tough, tough, tough pill to swallow, but i certainly can understand why she needed to be stopped At The point in which the police arrived. Ira graham, im so glad youre here. So sorry that your neighborhood is going through this. Two things can be true. One is that its a tragedy, always, when a s16yearold is dead but thAt The circumstances can be very complicated. Ira graham, thank you for your time. My pleasure. George floyds killing is sadly just one of a series of africanamerican men who died At The hands of police. What is the guilty verdict in this case mean to other families who are still seeking justice . Plus, four stars played such a major role in bringing attention to black Lives Matter. Emotional reaction from the Sports World to the guilty verdict, next. You look At The past and how many people before had to die and had to not receive justice for this to happen today. burke Phone It in to 1800farmers to get Policy Perks, like a Home And Autobundle discount. man im phoning it in and just saved twenty percent. burke get your Policy Perks by calling 1800farmers. Were finally starting to see, you know we walked around with eyes wide shut for a long time. Theyre starting to open today. And this is going to be the first in a future of change. For me, it means that, you know, my friends and people that have also lost Loved Ones now have a chance to get their cases reopen. That is George Floyds girlfriend saying she is hopeful that a guilty verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial will lead to Real Change in america for families whose Loved Ones were killed by police. Joining us now is one mother who is still waiting for justice. Gwen carr. Her son, eric garner, was killed by police in New York in 2014. Gwen, thank you for being with us this morning. Yes, thank you for having me. Your son Erics Death was also captured on camera. We can hear him also saying the words, I Cant breathe. And the officer who had him in an illegal chokehold after five years was fired from the nypd, but a Grand Jury decide not to indict. What does this verdict in the case of George Floyd mean to you . Well, this verdict actually seems like were pivoting into the right direction. Like with my sons death, we did not have this type of cooperation from the Police Department, from the mayor. And we have seen on camera just as we did with George Floyd that my son was actually being murdered on video. And he chose not to fire the Police Officers. He put one of them on desk duty, and then after five years, the doj decided not to go forward with the trial. And just dropped the ball on us. And if not for me and other groups pushing to have the departmental trial, it would have been all just swept under the rug. But i was not letting that happen. So we did get a departmental trial where we got one officer fired but thats not enough. And i think this set the precedent for the George Floyd movement. So when we have seen what happened to George Floyd, we said, no. No more. The whole seems like the entire nation came out and said this is not going to be. We are going to take steps, and its not only the black not only the black race, but all races, nations, creeds, religions, everyone came out to say enough is enough. I want to ask you something that i just asked Philonise Floyd because theres been a lot of focus on justice. And certainly this is the outcome that you wanted and so many wanted for the death of an africanamerican man At The hands of police. The goal should be for them to not die in the first place, right, or to be mistreated. What needs to happen to get the country to that place . Well, first of all, we have to get rid of this deepseeded hate. This deepseeded racism because thats what a lot of that is in the Police Department. And we have to get rid of the bad apples because even if you are a good Police Officer and you see bad Police Officers doing the wrong thing and you say nothing, you are just as bad. So lets work on getting things going in the right direction because just because we got one victory, one victory is not enough. We need to stay woke. Dont just go home and sit on your couch saying, oh, well, George Floyd has a victory. No, we all need a victory. We have so many of us that didnt get victories so we have to work on that, and we have to work on other young men and women not being killed. Who wants their name known after theyre dead . We need to do something now. We dont want another casualty. No, we dont. Gwen carr, thank you so much for your time this morning. Youre so welcome. Were getting more reaction this morning from some of the Sports Stars who helped keep black Lives Matter, the movement in the forefront. WhAt They say about the Derek Chauvin verdict, next. Plus, the Las Vegas raiders criticized for this tweet with the words i can breathe. The teams white owner is defending it. And that ending was so intense. I know, i didnt even see it coming. I am speaking in a rotunda that was never envisioned that never envisioned my ascent to mayor. Im going to walk into an office that my ancestors could have never imagined me working in, but im here. Thats Tishaura Jones being sworn in as the first black female mayor of st. Louis just hours before the Derek Chauvin verdict was announced. Jones is now the ninth black woman currently serving as a mayor of americas 100 largest cities. Thats an alltime high. Joining us is the new mayor of st. Louis, Tishaura Jones. Congratulations on your inauguration. Historic. But on that day, on this day that was so historic also just your reaction to all of this. Yes, so thank you again for having me. Its wonderful to be here. You know, yesterday could have been a very different day for my first official day on the job. We were aware thAt The verdict was forthcoming. Pretty much all day. And then to get back a guilty verdict totally changed the trajectory of the rest of the day for us. We were prepared to have to deal with potential protests in the wake of a not guilty verdict. But as my mother always says, but god, now we have a guilty verdict and Derek Chauvin will be held accountable and the Floyd Family can breathe a little easier. You have talked about your son, 13yearold aden a lot during your campaign and i heard you talk about him during interviews. What does this mean for you as the mother of, you know, a 13yearold black boy who will be, you know, a young man. Yes, because he is already 6 feet so he is tall, as most men, right . And this means that his mother is now in a seAt To try to transform Public Safety in our city. To transform it in a way that sees him as a 13yearold Boy and not and doesnt treat him like a man. To see him as a little boy who is still learning and growing and can make mistakes and not fear being killed by police because of his mistakes. How does the verdict in this Trial Help you . Or what does it change for you as a mayor and also as a mother in your efforts to make sure the world, as you say, treats aden as a 13yearold Boy. Which any 13yearold is. You know, i think its a first step. I dont see it as a Silver Bullet or solving anything. I think thAt This is a major verdict and a major case. And that now theres more precedent for officers who take the lives of everyday citizens in such ways. So i think thAt This is a first step for transforming our Public Safety systems, but it is not the end. Its just the beginning. You are now in charge of a metropolitan police force. What changes do you plan on making over the next several months . Well, the way that were going to try to lead is were going to try to transform Public Safety to lead with prevention instead leading with arresting and incarcerating. St. Louis is also tops in the nation for the number of officerinvolved shootings, and so it is my goal to reduce that number to zero. To make sure that people feel safe when they call 911 and that we deploy the right professional to the right call. Mayor Tishaura Jones, congratulations on your historic day. We appreciate you being with us. Your son aden must be proud, i have to say. He must be so proud of what hes seen over the last day. Thank you. Thank you. Available at kay the Sports World brought so much attention to the black Lives Matter movement over the last year. Minnesotas four major sports teams, the twins, timberwolves, vikings and wild, all responded with relief thAt There was justice, they said, for George Floyd and reiterating their commitment to social justice. Also former Nba And Wnba stars sharing their feelings on whAt They hope this will all mean. Justice was served, and we still have a long time to go. The fact that were sitting there not knowing whats going to happen, that still means we have a long way to go. We expected that, you know, the outcome was going to be like this, but we have expected that a lot of times and then outcome was different. I was just saying to myself, i hope they do the right thing. If they dont, theyre going to turn this mother up. I was sitting in front of the tv watching the verdict come down. And my hands started sweating. My body started shivering, and my heart started pounding because i was nervous. I was nervous because i didnt believe. I am sitting in front of the tv and i didnt believe. Even when the verdict came down and all charges, you know, we wanted was met, i still was staring At The Tv Listening to the judge because i was thinking there was an outcoming because weve never seen this. Like shaq said, you cant celebrate this, but if there was any win today, to me it was a win for Accountability P. Were sitting here on a sports show speaking about justice and speaking about things going on within our court system. Its not okay to just be a by stander of justice or our political system or democracy. And i think democracy, we think of as a destination and its a continuous journey. And it has to be thought of that way. And just because were athletes, just because were stayathome moms or businessmen or doctors or lawyers, whatever we are, like we have to actively participate in that. Because if we dont, were not doing our job and were failing the generation that comes after us. And i just think you look At The past and how many people before had to die and had to not receive justice for this to happen today. And we Cant Hide behind badges, money, power, race, gender. We Cant Hide behind those things because thats not justice and were lying to ourselves if we continue to think that. Lactaid is 100 real milk, just without the lactose. I would not call todays verdict justice, however, because justice implies true restoration. But it is accountability, which is the first step towards justice. That is minnesota attorney general keith Ellisons Reaction to former Police Officer Derek Chauvins conviction on all counts in the death of George Floyd, including two counts of murder. Lets bring in Don Lemon, the host of Cnn Tonight with Don Lemon and the author of this is the fire, what i say to my friends about racism. Number one New York times bestselling author of. It is number one. Which is very special. Good morning. So good to see you here. Its wonderful to see you here in New York. Social distancing but happy to be here. Thank you for being here this morning. This is such a big day as we reflect on this. I was thinking the same thing Keith Ellison said, justice was served. It was the first thing i said after the verdict was read. I should have said justice was served for this one. But what am i thinking today . Quite honestly, im happy im sitting here and not i havent been up since 4 00 or up the entire night. I was here until 2 00 a. M. Covering violence or saying there was unrest in minnesota, unrest in new York City or unrest here. Peaceful protests. People appear to feel that, for now, that justice was served. And so i am happy that were here talking about whAt This means, not only for the Floyd Family but for black people in this country writ large. His emotions are in a continuum between relief and cautious optimism which seems like a fair place to be. Im interested to hear from the jurors. I am, too. When we hear from the jurors, what do you think it is theyll say . Honestly, listen, i know it was 10 1 2 hours they went in. I think they wanted to, obviously, consider it and be respectful. But quite frankly, i think they went, what are we doing here . Isnt it obvious . Isnt it obvious . We saw the 9 minutes and 29 seconds on video. And all of the things, all of this rigamarole about what happened before and he was resisting and people were intimidating us and there was carbon monoxide. I think that was insulting. I know Defense Attorneys have to do everything, right, to vigorously defend their clients. But i think thAt They are going to say, this was all ridiculous. He held a life in his hands. And you think about it. Weve been on now for, what, two or three minutes. Think about three times that amount. You would have the stime to thik about your actions. If i said, john, I Cant breathe. Can you take your knee off . Youre snuffing the life out of me. I think in nine minutes youd have time to think about your actions and rectify your actions within thosenine minutes. I think the Jury Saw that. We watched the trial. We saw the parts that stood out to us and seemed particularly convincing or might sway a jury. But when we do hear from the jurors well hear specifically what it was for them. Whether it was this witness or that witness or whether it was the video. And i think, brianna, some in the jury, mark my words, will say, i dont think a Police Officer would treat me that way because i didnt look i dont look like George Floyd. I think thats going to be part of the reaction. I think others will say, i knew the Police Officer treated him differently because i am him. I saw myself in him. Sorry about that. No, of course not. I want to ask your opinion on something that weve seen in the world of sports thats causing a controversy which is a tweet that was put out by the Las Vegas raiders which said i can breathe. And the context of why this is perceived as offensive is because after the death of eric garner, who was the first black man killed At The hands of police who said I Cant breathe, this was sort of a retort to that. Not in a supportive way, obviously, from some police. The white coach is standing by sorry, the white owner is standing by this tweet. I wonder what you think about that. What you would say to him. You know, i saw that and people sent it to me and theyre like, how can he . And i i wasnt offended by it. Bakari sellers had a simple response which is, hire black people. Thats bakaris opinion. I wasnt offended by it because for George Floyds family and the people who supported him said as much. That we can breathe now. So i think we need to give each other a little room to breathe and to be able to have these conversations. And so if you have an issue with the owner saying that, take it up with the owner. Let the Owner Talk about it. Help him to understand that it may be offensive to some people, but i do think in this moment that people were so happy with the outcome so maybe in their response they did something that you didnt like. You may find offensive in some ways. But he didnt say, oh, my gosh, I Cant believe this the white cop didnt get off. Hes trying. At least hes trying. So, listen, we all need to be held accountable. We all need to do the work. We all need to figure this out but i dont want to castigate someone for at least trying to do the right thing, even if it may be done in ignorance. I dont think it was harmful in any way. Do you have a book you can recommend to white people if theyre looking for ways . I have two books to recommend. I would recommend everyone reads The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin which offers people grace, even when they mess up or you think they did something wrong like the white owner of thAt Team. And then i would recommend a book that comes after that by this author named Don Lemon who says this is the fire that we are in right now that also talks about Accountability And Grace At The same time. So while were in this moment, where were saying Theres Justice for now and accountability, lets focus on the positive and not nitpick something that may be taken out of context or may be offensive to some. The overall picture is better than one minor alleged offense. Don lemon, thank you so much for getting up early for us. So good to see you. Im going to come back and hang out with you a lot.
