Himself. Cnns jason carrolls In Indianapolis right now. Jason, this is so heartbreaking. It is at least the 45th Mass Shooting in this country in just the past month. How is the community responding, and what have police been able to find out so far . Reporter even with all the shootings, pamela, that have occurred all over the country, when it happens in your community, thats when it obviously just really hits home. Thats what the people here In Indianapolis are feeling and experiencing now. Right now as you can see, this vigil is about to get under way. Weve got a number of people who have started to gather here at this park. Again, eight victims, many of the people here family, friends, coworkers. Weve seen some people here wearing orange fedex tshirts. Again, four of the members four of the victims were members of the Sikh Community. The Sikh Community feels especially targeted because, as you can what weve been learning, many of the people who work at that fedex facility were members of the Sikh Community. In addition to that, there were other victims, as well. Four others. The oldest, 74 years old. The youngest, 19 years old. There were actually two 19yearold victims. I want to bring you right over here to a family that weve been introduced to. Again, this tragedy has hit the Sikh Community extremely, extremely hard. Hi there. Jason carroll. Im told that you wanted to share some of your thoughts and your feelings in terms of how youre holding up during this moment. Its hard for us. Yeah. I just saw her like two days ago, and she was telling us that shes just going to be shell be working for the last day over there. Never thought this was going to come. Reporter can you hold up the picture . Tell us what you want the world to know about the person you love so much. She was the most amiable in the family, most religion, dedicated. Today we were supposed to have a big celebration, but now we are mourning, we are in grief. Reporter this is a picture of her here . This is we lost two Family Members in one day. Its completely devastating for us. We never expected Something Like this to happen. Its really hard for us. Reporter you know, when these shootings happen, weve seen them happen all over the country. I was just explaining that when it happens to you, to someone you know, one of your loved ones, it takes on a whole new significance. It does. It does. We never expected that, you know, they would go to work and we would never see them again. They were my one of my aunts, she wasnt supposed to go to work. She was supposed to take the day off but decided, oh, well, let me just go in. Didnt know she was she wasnt going to come reporter i know this is difficult. Thank you so much for sharing. Is there anything else that youd like to say about the people that you love so much . I mean, we wish they were here with us today. We really do wish they werent in the middle of this. We never expected that Something Like this would happen to us. We read about gun violence every single day. Its not acceptable anymore. Something needs to be done about it. Our government, everyone, we need to do something about this. Reporter thank you so much. I know its very difficult. I want to just thank you for your strength and being able to speak to us during this very difficult time while youre mourning. Thank you so much. So pamela, again, this is just an example of what weve been seeing and hearing here in this community. People coming together now, finally able to mourn in some ways and do it together. But again, you heard what she said, it just never expected Something Like this to happen. People have been hearing about the Gun Shootings all over the country on a monthly basis it seems in ways. Now its happened here. Pamela . Yeah. 45 Mass Shootings just in the last month. Jason carroll, thank you so much for bringing us the latest there In Indianapolis. And lets bring in republican congressman james comer of kentucky, member of the second congressional caucus. Thank you for coming on. Thanks for having me, pam. Im assuming you heard there that the families and the friends of the victims in this latest shooting at the fedex facility, as i pointed out, there have been 45 Mass Shootings in the last month. And that is defined by four more people getting wounded or killed after gun violence. Given what we have seen, are these Mass Shootings acceptable to you . No, theyre not acceptable. Its just heartbreaking stories. Unfortunately from where i sit as a member of congress, you cant legislate against evil. I think what we need focus on are Mental Health. We need to focus on drug abuse. We need focus on reducing poverty in the breakdown of families. Okay. I want to talk about this. And its really important, i think, that we have an open, honest discussion here, right. Right. Lawmakers like yourself are in a position of power to actually do something. And when you look at the data about and you have said people kill people, guns dont kill. When you look at the data, america has the most guns in the world. It also has 25 times more gun violence and deaths xaviered to other wealthy compared to other wealthy nations. With those facts and your argument in mind, i mean, does america just have more violent and evil people than other countries than, say, canada and switzerland that have high Gun Ownership but dont see this kind of gun violence . I dont think thats accurate. But i do think that in america we have higher instances of drug abuse. I think we have more of a breakdown of our traditional american families. I think we have more instances of a divide between the rich and the poor. These are issues that congress can address and properly legislate. But why does it have to be so absolutely where its the person, its all about Mental Health, guns should be excluded from any discussion, even the supreme court. I believe it was justice scalia, the Late Conservative justice scalia, said the Second Amendment has limits. Why does it have to be so absolute . Why cant in the wake of these Mass Shootings lawmakers say, look, lets look at Mental Health and guns and figure out what we can do to make sure these Mass Shootings dont continue to happen in america . I think if there was a way that you could pass a bill to eliminate Mass Shootings, i think that would pass congress, 4250. The problem is with these policies, they sound good, its always in the at the heat of the discussion right after numbers of Mass Shootings like weve seen over the last few weeks. But these policies affect lawabiding citizens. Criminals are going to break the law. It against the law to go in and start shooting people. So i dont think that Gun Control Laws are the answer. I think that when you pass Gun Control Laws, again, youre affecting the people that actually abide by the law. And that gives the criminal the advantage. But i mean, lets talk about these Background Checks bills that were passed in the house. They were passed in a bipartisan fashion. Why are those bills bad . You did not vote for them. How would they affect lawabiding citizens who have their guns or who would like to have a gun . A lot of these bills that the democrats have proposed, not just gun bills or immigration bills, whatever, they always have poison pills in there. And any time there are background check bills, if you really dive into the bill, there are also limits to lawabiding Citizens Rights to own guns. Now, republicans support the banning guns from criminals, banning guns from people that have Mental Health issues. We dont support red flag laws because that eliminates due process for people. Just because someone says, oh, pam brown threatened me, that shouldnt give the government the right to take away your Gun Ownership rights. This is a complex issue, and when you have Mass Shootings like weve seen and ive had, you know, the School Shooting in my district, its always a discussion. But i think that the we have to look at the root of the problem. And again, i think thats the poverty, Mental Health, breakdown in the family. These are the things that Congress Needs to focus on. And also from a from a Congressional Standpo Point We D to be less divisive in washington i agree. I keep asking how can republicans and democrats come together and say, hey, look, we agree that these Mass Shootings are unacceptable. Lets figure this out. Lets get together and figure out the Mental Health and the gun aspect. And i want to ask you quickly, you brought up the gun owners rights. And they do have rights under the u. S. Constitution. At what point are you valuing the philosophical concept of liberty for gun owners over actual lives . Prioritizing the right to buy a Deadly Weapon over life, liberty, And The Pursuit Of Happiness that we were all guaranteed, what about the right to not be shot . Well, weve got laws on the books to make it illegal to shoot someone. I think it was very clear that the framers of our constitution made Gun Ownership a priority. It was the Second Amendment. And if you look at the states that have banned guns and the cities that have banned guns, chicago, washington, d. C. , they have some of the highest rates of gun violence. So just passing laws banning guns doesnt solve the problem. But we have a problem in america, and i think republicans realize it i want to get this okay. Im sorry. I dont mean to interrupt. Bu but sometimes different points are made and i want to make sure we look at the numbers and facts when you say something. I did look at the numbers for crimes in cities and states with strict gun laws. I saw what you had said repeatedly. Nearly twothirds of crime guns in states with gun laws were sold in states with weak gun laws. So if gun laws dont matter, why are criminals going to states with weaker gun laws and bringing that gun back to a state with a stronger gun law and committing crimes . Well, i cant answer that. But i can i can tell you that in the states that have where you see like kentucky where you have a strong belief in the Second Amendment, overwhelming support for the Second Amendment, it seeps like you have less instances of gun violence. I think if a if a criminal really sits and thinks about it and they want to go in and create havoc, they know that in areas where theres more Gun Ownership theres less theyre less likely to achieve their goals. Thats a terrible example to use, but i think thats really what the data would show. And im really open im looking at the data right here to trying to solve these problems. Im looking at the data right here showing nearly twothirds of crime guns recovered in states with gun laws were sold in states with weak gun laws. Let me ask you before you go, congressman, and again, i appreciate your time on this issue, and it is complex. Absolutely. You talked about how your concern is the Laws Infringing On Gun Owners rights. That is a big concern for republicans like yourself. But if you look at polls and you look at the polls as they relate to the house bill on Background Checks, the latest poll found 89 among all americans, 84 support among republicans, 85 gun owners, and 84 among rural residents. So with all of this support, how can you say that this would be a bad thing . Isnt it congress job to represent the will of the people . I dont know about those polls. I see a lot of polls that show lots of different things. I know in kentucky there are several polls the numbers would be right up to i dont dispute your polls, but at the end of the day, i dont think you can legislate against evil. You know, we have laws on the books in states that say you cant smoke marijuana. But we have people going to other states to buy marijuana. We have instances of the Mexican Drug Cartel delivering why are we seeing this with gun violence . Is it the American People have a more evil and violent here than in other states with high Gun Ownership like canada or switzerland . I mean, just help me understand that. I cant explain it. But i know that in countries throughout history that have banned guns, like germany and many countries in the asian region, you have situations where the government infringes on the rights of people. Its the first step in communism. Its the first step in excessive totalitarianism and socialism. So i think its important that we abide by the constitution. And certainly, you know, Background Checks are important. And when it comes up that you have someone that has committed a crime, someone thats on a watch list im a republican cosponsor of the child abuse prevention treatment act. One of the things that that bill does is it helps federal agencies coordinate better whenever theres A Person Of Interest that they suspect may be someone that is moving into a community that has a a checkered past, that may be someone that could commit a crime against a child. This is the same type of communication that we have to have between law enforcement, but we need to support our law enforcement. And thats one of the big differences between democrats and republicans in washington right now. And hopefully i was going to say, i hope we see that communication between republicans like yourself and democrats. I interviewed one earlier in the show. I hope you guys are coming together. I hope you are talking. American people want you to. Congressman james comer, i know you know that. Thank you again for coming on the show to talk about this really important topic. Michigan is being hit with so many new covid cases right now that hospitals are running out of space to treat them. The state is leading the u. S. In new infections with nearly 9,000 reported yesterday alone. That is the second highest singleday number in michigan since the pandemic began. John foxx is the ceo of the states Largest Health care provider, beaumont health, and he joins me now. You were sounding the alarm, why . Well, pam, its a very serious situation up here in michigan. We are now in our third surge across the state which is obviously a tragedy for patients and families fighting the disease and dealing with the mortality. Its also our 13th month of fighting the pandemic for our Frontline Health care heroes. Theyre exhausted. They are tired. We are asking them to dig deep and now for three surges, and its a very difficult situation for them. So we are trying to manage our way through this. I think were doing pretty well, but it is a struggle. And it has changed rapidly. Why you think, why is this happening in michigan right now . We think that there are multiple factors. One, we believe the overall Infection Rate in michigan was lower during the pandemic to date. Secondly, michigan opened up recently, about eight, ten weeks ago, with various orders being rel relieved. And everyones tired of being the shelterinplace orders or these restrictions. So we appreciate that, but unfortunately i think people have dropped their Infection Control issues, theyre not wearing their masks as much as they should, social distancing, hand hygiene. And very importantly, we really have a new covid virus variant, the b. 1. 1. 7. From the uk. That was really not present in our first or second surge in 2020, but it is dominating the infections now. It is much more infectious. And the way we can see that is our Positivity Rate on the patients we test every day and we do about 2,000 patients a week for covid testing. We were running 5 of those tests being positive 30 days ago. It has now jumped to 20 . That really means its running and seeing younger people in the hospital, too, younger people in the e. R. Than what you saw in the past surges, sateright . The Vaccination Rate amongst the elderly, 65 and older, has gone pretty well. So that means that its really younger people who are being infected with the b. 1. 1. 7. Variant, and it really is presenting in all of our e. R. S, and, frankly, our inpatient units. Were treating younger patients than we ever saw before. That is frightening. Were going to talk to a young patient actually later in the show who had covid. You mentioned people are tired of wearing the max and being on lockdown, but masks and being on lockdown, but guess who else is tired Health Care Workers, doing this for 193 months. How are they 13 months. How are they holding up . Were doing everything we can to help them. We are bending any of our rules that they think might be in the way for being flexible. We now have Reinstituted Food Trucks coming back to all of our hospitals. We are bringing in extra staff. And frankly, doing everything that we can. And i have a big ask, i would ask anyone listening to this to please reach out and thank your local Health Care Workers who are dealing with the pandemic. Again, 13 months is a long time to be dominated by this one disease. Oh it certainly is. John fox, thank you for putting it all into perspective for where things stand there in the state of michigan and something we all need to Pay Attention to because it could happen elsewhere, as well. S. For the sanctions President Biden announced this weekend over election meddling, cyber hacking, and severe Human Rights Abuses in crimea. Ten u. S. Diplomats are being thrown out of russia, and the kremlin is threatening, quote, painful measures against american businesses. Now the u. S. Is officially drawing the clearest connection yet between russia and the Trump Campaign, that the Trump Campaign chairman gave a russian operative internal Campaign Documents that then made its way to russian intelligence services. Cnn National Security analyst mark mezeti is a washington correspondent for the New York Times. He joins me now. Mark, seven people went to prison as a result of the mueller probe. When the redacted report first came out, we had the clearest signal yet that this wasnt a hoax as President Trump often claimed. It was kind of a fascinating and Unexpected Development this week, pam, with as you said the new information that came out about the relationship between paul manafort, the Trump Campaign chairman, and this mysterious figure named co constantinkilimnik. We know they had a relationship, and hes been identified in the past as having been a russian Intelligence Officer or connected with russian intelligence. The Interesting Development in this what happened this week was that a treasury report came out associated with the sanctions you just mentioned that said that kilimnik when he got this internal campaign information, he passed it on to russian intelligence services. Now the significance is, of course, we never knew what happened to this information. Once manafort gave it to kilimnik it was a mystery. Now according to the new government document, it went directly to russian intelligence services. And so they kind of complete the connection of the information going effectively to the kremlin. So the obvious question is, the Mueller Report, they just talked about how kilimnik gave it to russian and ukrainian old gash thats he worked for oligarchs that he worked for. Did he not know the detail, was it redacted . Do you know . We still need to figure out that. We know that the picture about kilimnik and, frankly, the whole story has evolved over time. Now mueller, the Mueller Report is now two years old. And theres a subsequent report by the Senate Intelligence committee that had more information about kilimnik and his ties to russian intelligence. And that came out last summer. Now here we are some months later, and its possible that this picture has just evolved that, you know, theyve gathered information, perhaps they just had access have more access to information and sources than even mueller had. We need to find out more about exactly the nature of the information and how it came out and why it came out. Yeah. It was surprising to us. But we should point out in 2017, we reported on this, right, i was part of the cnn team, me, jim sciutto, evan perez, you were part of the Team Reporting on contact between the Trump Campaign and russian operatives we both i remember vividly received a lot of pushback from the campaign and others, a lot of republicans. But the latest information from the Treasury Department seems to only back it up, right . Yeah, pam. I remember it well. And valentines day, i remember. It went over time, you know, being jim comey, fbi director, pushed back, as well, on these reports. As you said, what we only learned over time, over four years, is that its actually even more of a solid picture of connections or at least contacts between trump advisers, campaign officials, and People Associated with russian intelligence. That doesnt mean, of course, that there was, quote, you know, direct collusion between the two. That, of course, is still obviously up for debate and interpretation. But the fact that the contacts, some of these mysterious contacts that happened in 2016 were with People Associated with russian intelligence, i think now has been firmly established by these reports. All right. Mark, thank you so much. Appreciate it. Thanks, pam. The National Guard is in minneapolis tonight prepared for a sixth night of protests as Closing Arguments in the Derek Chauvin trial start next week. Lets make lots of money youve got the brawn ive got the brains. With allstate, drivers who switched saved over 700 click or call to switch right now protesters are gathering in stillwater, minnesota, outside the home of Washington County attorney pete erput. They are demanding Murder Charges against the former Brooklyn Police officer kim potter. Shes been charged with seconddegree manslaughter in the death of Duante Wright. She claimed she thought she was using her taser and shot wright with her gun by mistake. Joining me is the attorney for the family of Duante Wright, jeff storms, and he represents the family of george floyd. Mr. Storms, this has been a tough week for the country. But im sure its been especially agonizing for both the floyd and the wright families. Can you give us an update on how theyre doing . Pamela, it was an incredibly tough week for both of those families. You know, to have the Floyd Family Go through this agonizing trial where theres Character Assassination after Character Assassination of george and then for focus to be directed away from that Critical Landmark Civil Rights Trial for the death of yet another unarmed black man was so incredibly tragic for that family. And meanwhile, the Wright Family was living life as normal just on sunday. Within seconds they lost their son, their father, their loved one. And the entire world is focused on them. Its been just incredibly tragic and disruptive for those families. The former Police Officer who shot wright is being charged with seconddegree manslaughter, presumably because she claims that she shot him by accident when she meant to tase him. Protesters right now are demanding potter be charged with murder, and the Wright Family wants stiffer charges, too. Take a listen. Seconddegree manslaughter is not okay. Im not okay with that. Thats not right. She murdered my son. My son is never going to come home. She gets to sit on a Police Pension right now while my son is going to be buried in a few days, and thats not okay. And Nin A Statement You Wrot in is no accident. You called it intensional and deliberate use of force. To be clear here, is it your view that the former Police Officer potter intentionally shot Duante Wright and is lying about meaning to use her taser . Want to make sure we understand correctly. Well, pamela, thats ultimately going to be for a jury. But whats critical to recognize right now is that beginning with the very initial intentional pretextural stop and continuing through a number of intentional acts that it takes to deploy a side arm, you know, you have to remove it from the holster. You have to hold it. A gun weighs different than a taser does. It feels different than a taser. It looks different than a taser. All of us could see in the body camera that that sidearm was pointed for a long enough period of time for anyone to identify that it was a sidearm and not a taser. So its going to be for a jury of ms. Potters peers to determine whether or not she intended to pull that trigger. But we are able just at the early stage of this investigation to tell the entire world that this isnt just an accident. There were a number of intentional acts and failures. If it is proven without a reason doubt that she mistakenly grabbed her gun rather than her taser, do you think she should still face the stiffer charges . Well, so at this point in time, pamela, in terms of the charges again, we have very minimal information. Obviously on a civil side we have far less information than a criminal side. In the legal world, what we always talk about is precedent. And we have some pretty heavy precedents here in minnesota, pamela, which was several years ago, a black Police Officer, muhammad noor, shot justine damon, a white woman, at night in an alley, and he said it was an accident. And he was charged with thirddegree murder. And so now we have a white officer shooting an unarmed black man in broad daylight, and theres not a murder charge. So for the family and for the community, its not hard to look at that precedent and say why should there be a difference . So none of us should be surprised. Jeff storms, thank you very much for your time. We appreciate it. Thank you for having me, pamela. And Body Cam Videos released this week brought Police Violence to the forefront of the national conversation. This issue is not a new one. According to the washington post, roughly 1,000 people are killed by police each year. And africanamericans are disproportionately the targets. The post found that africanamericans more than twice as likely as white people to be killed by police. Youll remember protests demanded change again last summer following the death of george floyd. Nothing was ever done. At leaston a federal level. So it is no surprise the numbers arent improving. There has been more than 230 Fatal Police Shootings in the first three month of every year since the post started their database. Unfortunately, despite a worldwide pandemic and a National Movement against Police Violence, this year is no different. And even as the u. S. Well, evangelicals in america are among the biggest vaccine skeptics. In one community, that hesitancy is being pushed by a pastor whose message to his followers is dont trust the vaccine or the government. But why . Cnn went to louisiana to find out. Antimask and antivax, antigovernment, then im proud to be antigovernment reporter as more and more americans are getting vaccinated, resistance remains strong within one group in particular white evangelicals. Hallelujah. Reporter this hesitancy is driven by a distrust in government, misinformation, and political identity. This is not a fringe group. A quarter of americans are evangelical. You did not give me my rights, sir. But if youre a politician or a doctor i would rather die free than i had live on my knees. Reporter how is it living on your knees to take a vaccine . Because youre bowing against your convictions. Reporter Pentecostal Pastor Tony Spill has made a name for himself protesting covid1919 rules in baton rouge. He live streamed himself going under house arrest for refusing to close his church during lockdown. While a survey of evangelical leaders show most would be open to getting the vaccine, spill is adamantly against it. If you broke your arm, would you go to the doctor . Sure, id go to the doctor and get it set and wear a cast. Reporter at some level you trust some doctors. Yes. We do. Reporter so can you just explain where the line is. The line is in this vaccine. Number one, the virus has been a scam from the beginning. Its always been politically motivated from mailin ballots and voter i. D. Thats what has got a new administration in the white house today. Reporter while Evangelical Christians to believe in surgeon conspiracy theory. Like that trump won the 2020 election or qanon theories. Conspiracies about the covid19 vaccine can effect everyone else. Around 70 of the population needs to get the vaccine to reach herd immunity. 20 of white Evangelical Christians say they wont get it. You have a 99 survival rate. Why do you want somebody to contaminate you with something that may or may not hurt you . Theres a tendency within White Christian nationalism to want to believe these kinds of conspiracies. I think it reenforces this idea of us versus them. The problem is the people have an incentive to keep stoking that fear because people keep clicking and people keep listening. Fascinating reporting. I dont know anybody in my church, black, brown who had the virus. Your father and mother told me they had the virus. Yes. And thats all right. Maybe we had it and maybe we got it. You said your grandfather got the vaccine. And im opposed to that. I did not promote that. I think he was foolish for taking the vaccine. This month the most popular host on fox news appears to be promoting the racist white replacement theory. Here he is in his own words. I know that the left and all the little gatekeepers on twitter become literally hysterical if you use the term replacement, if you suggest that the Democratic Party is trying to replace the current elect rate with new people, more obedient voters from the third world. Let me just say it. Thats true. Everybody wants to make a racial thing out of it, the white replacement theory. No, no, no. Carlson insists hes only speaking about voting rights, but his remarks echoed what the shooters from christchurch, new zealand and el paso, texas, said about immigration and replacement. His comments were echoed by White Nationalist groups online. What is even more troubling, this week the rhetoric was echoed in congress this week. Heres republican scott perry of pennsylvania. For many americans, what seems to be happening or what they believe right now is happening is what appears to them is were replacing national born, Native Born Americans to permanently transform the Political Landscape of this very nation. Well, there is a serious debate among journalists and commentators about how to handle this, whether discussing extremist rhetoric like this even to discredit or call it out backfires simply by giving it more attention. One scholar says ignoring this stuff will only make it worse. Nicole hemmer writes on cnn. Com history demands that we pay more attention, not less, because it suggests theres every reason to believe that carlson and his acolytes could succeed in normalizing hate for a wider audience. For the record, when its given a nightly platform attracting millions of eyeballs and then gains a foothold with elected leaders, it is safe to say the attempt at normalization is underway. So we and the media have a responsibility to report on it. Ultimately its up to fellow republicans to stop this normalization. Earlier this week we learned some of the most far right members of the house led by congresswoman Marjorie Taylor green were planning to launch a caucus touting nativism and uniquely anglosaxon political traditions. Today green abandoned the idea. This doesnt mean extremism is going to be suddenly gone from politics, but it shows that the republican establishment can beat back at this ideology when they want to. As congressman Adam Kinsinger said about the project, we can loudly say they dont belong to us. This week cnn will air the finale of our new cnn original series the people versus the kellyan klan. It tells the story of a woman who took down klan. The Sikh Community is in mourning as four members were victims in the indianapolis mass shooting. Protests for a sixth straight Night Outside Minneapolis and the potential for even more tonight.
