Im anderson cooper. Right now the queen is inside Windsor Castle as we all await the start of this extraordinary farewell. It has been drastically scaled back because of the pandemic. It has been planned for years but now, because of covid, the situation has changed. It comes at a time, obviously, of strained relations within The Royal Family. Right now, Military Units are gathering ahead of the Funeral Procession that begins in a little while. That is when we will see the coffin carried out of a private part of Windsor Castle where the queens residence is and to be placed on a land rover which the prince helped design. The procession will be led by the band of the guards and one of the oldest and most iconic military bands. Charles, the prince of wales, will follow on foot with his sister princess ann and behind them will be Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. Then the walk and Procession Harry and william with their cousin positioned between them peter phillips. The queen will not walk in the procession and driven to the ceremony. As the procession continues, guns will be fired, bells will ring out every minute for about eight minutes until the coffin reaches st. Georges chapel and then British National anthem will be played. Tow top of the hour a nationwide Moment Of Silence. Then the coffin will be carried inside the chapel for the funeral service. We are correspondents, royal experts in place across the United Kingdom to cover every moment of the funeral and takes behind the scenes. Lets go to cnn correspondents max foster who is there on the grounds. This isnt a State Funeral but feels like one looking at the incredible images behind me in the castle. These are all of the Military Units, the associations which Prince Philip supported throughout his life. He was a very successful naval officer. He had to leave that role to become consul to the queen. We will see them lining up around this angle and we will see in the next 45 minutes or so, the coffin come out of the entrance there you may recognize as a Greeting Point for the queen as they come in, most recently president trump, of course. I can tell you that the Dean Of Windsor is about to give prayers over the coffin in that building there. The queen has personally chosen some flowers to lay on top of the coffin, white lilies and White Flowers in the chapel and kate williams, a cnn contributor, historian. In terms of history we will be remembering an extraordinary man and an extraordinary life. Primary what we will remember is someone who was probably the key adviser to arguably one of the greatest monarchies in British History. Yes, Prince Philip was the longest serving consul in World History and he promised the queen he would be her lead amid the coronation and the vow he kept throughout his life and her adviser and Sounding Board and after his retirement he gave up his naval career which he exposed himself to monarchy and country. He was someone who had grown up around Monarchy Collapsing including that of his own weak royal family so, therefore, important to him to lead The Royal Family in a stronger position which he very much did. He is credited with modernizing the monarchy, something that is defined, the embracement of mass media and using that to allow the queen to connect with her public. The queen is living that out today, isnt she . By inviting our cameras in to capture a deeply personal moment she feels credits him and particularly when he defined every single moment we are seeing play out here. Some adjusted to covid but something he wanted to see here today. This is what the Duke Of Edinburgh wanted. We see hymns about military regiment. They are reflecting this morning his own affections of the armed forces and his own devotion to veterans, to the Armed Service here, and this is the funeral he wanted, reflecting his own service, his family, but also his devotion to the queen. This is the way he wished to be remembered. Interesting because, anderson, he never wanted to really talk about his legacy. The only thing he really talked about was how he just wanted to make life a bit easier for the people that followed him. I people feel awkward about it but not the state of air that he was trying to avoid. Yeah, he said hell leave it up to other people to decide what his legacy will be. He wanted to get on with the work he had to do. Our panel of royal watchers and experts. Richard quest and Jewel Chatterly and sally smith and written Auto Biographies on the queen and others. It is a glorious day. In eterms of british weather, given the normal british weather. What do you expect to see this morning . I expect to see a Balancing Act, a careful Balancing Act between the requirements and demands of the pandemic versus the wish of the queen to honor philips own wishes for, you know, he hated pomp and ceremony. He did not want as we go through the service the next couple of hours youll see a sps simp simplicity. His line was enmeshed with pomp and circumstance. He was royal from the beginning. Never forget that. Prince philip was born royal through both the greek world family and then there was royalty in his blood from the beginning so he knew how to do it. He didnt learn how to be royal. But he always the worst forms of a possibility within that. He did not want a big funeral. For viewers, Windsor Castle, we have seen so many events there over the last decades in this familys life. What are you looking for today . Im looking for the human side, because its easy seeing all of the pomp and circumstance, to forget there is an actual family who have gone through very tough times recently. They have had a lot of death around them and they have had a lot of loss, and family arguments. I think its all too easy to forget that there are real human beings at the core of this. So im looking for the relationship, if you like, the body language, and the support for the queen. Julia . We are saying goodbye to Prince Philip but also celebrating a life welllived and we have seen that over the last week as we have celebrated the duty, the honor, and humor and wit and his charm is a crucial part of this. Love and support for the queen also is a part of this because she has been a center of gravity i think for the nation and the commonwealth. Whatever you look at this, she just lost the love of her life. I think to the human aspect of this, that is pivotal. Obviously, the questions the queen is grieving the loss of her life partner. I mean, as an extraordinary relationship. She was 8 years old when they first met, i believe . She was 13. 13. He was 18. Okay. Im sorry. Its extraordinary that they met so early. And she fell in love with him right away. She had seen him at various royal gatherings because they were all related. She and Prince Philip were third cousins, they shared the same great, great grandparents, Queen Victoria and prince albert. Philips mother was born in Windsor Castle. I remember when he first came along and one of the stuffy said, sir, would you like a little tour of Windsor Castle . He said, well, my mother was born here so i think i know it. But it was a bond for them from the very beginning. She fell deeply in love with him. It was the first major decision that she ever made in her life and she was utterly determined to do it. And he fell in love with her. Their life took a turn. They had plans that they had made in terms of what they were going to do. He was going to be in the military. Then the death of the queens father elevated her to the throne. It changed everything. They had been living five years really as a sort of normal husband and wife. But, suddenly, she was queen, suddenly, he was required to be two steps behind her. And i have to say in the following nearly 70 years, he never the saying is he never put a foot wrong. He always showed up on time and he was always behind her and he was always there to support. Now it was hard for him in the beginning because he was a hard charging leading kind of guy and he was impatient and he wanted to modernize the monarchy which he did in a lot of ways. But she knew she could count on him in so many ways. We are going to see a lot of british wrregiments all of themo Prince Philip all of which he had associations with. There is much more ahead, including the funeral will begin soon and we will share insights into the hardships that Prince Philip faced. That is all coming up next. Idolizing them. Mimicking their every move. And if she counts on the advanced hydration of pedialyte when it matters most. So do we. Hydrate like our heroes. [announcer] meet the ninja foodi air fry oven. Prince william and kate arrived by car a while ago. We expect to see more Royal Family Members soon. It is a small Family Gathering for the Funeral Procession that gets under way later this morning. The military is playing a very prominent role in this funeral. Can you explain why . There are going to be 730 members of the military in the armed forces involved in the funeral proceedings today. They, obviously, had an important place in Prince Philips heart. You can look at very different regiments of the Military Rehearsing inside the private grounds of the Windsor Castle. Most of them are not Wearing Masks and not socially distancing. I understand they have been taking rapid flow tests to make sure everybody on this day complies with covid protocols. Im in front of the castle. Around me in every direction, members of the police and stewards helping to keep The Public At Bay and making sure these pared down funeral considerations remain that way. On the grounds outside of Windsor Castle, The Royal Family has specifically asked for no exceptions for Prince Philips funeral. Everyone must imply with the covid protocols, so they are asking for online condolences and no one to congregate at the royals residences. There are police armed and unarmed but not heavyhanded. They are acting very sensitively and they are stepping and only encouraging people to move along and make sure the roads arent blonk bl blocked. An important towering figure in British Public life and now British History has a funeral which is so sedate. There is no fuss but that is the way that the Duke Of Edinburgh would have preferred it. Lets take a moment and just look at some of these images that we are seeing. Just extraordinary morning in windsor. Joining me now, is a friend of the family of Prince Philip. Royal heineness, that for being here. Thank you for having me. A sad occasion. What was do you remember the first time you met . I cant recall exactly the first time but i do have memories of him more as when i was a boy and my parents were invited to windsor and up to that area. I remember one occasion he likes to go up into the hills and we would in pouring rain. Im following my father up there wondering why we are dragged up and down there. Sort of legendary stories the treks they go on. Lumpl time comes around. Ed land rover comes up with the kit and the food comes out and its pouring with rain. I dont want to sit here and eat. No, you sit there and put the food in your mouth and it gets you to enjoy yourself just by getting on with it. That is sort of the nature he had which we all so miss. There is that, i think, that spirit within The Royal Family of getting on with it. Just pushing through things. That i think comes from his background. I mean, he had a very tough life as a young boy. Sort of the hardship of being a child like it was sort of without his parents for a lot of the time. You know, its something you have to get used to. I think he worked it out pretty well. Yeah. He also went to gordonson, a tough school in scotland . He started out where they had the first school and then with the coming of the nazis into germany, he moved out and took and opened a school so he was one of the first students in that school there. That school has stayed on and many people, including his sons, have gone through there. I actually considered applying there my senior year of high school to take a gap year there and the more i looked into it, the more i realized i would not survive very well in gordonston. They believe in Higher Education and sport and being good to other people and understanding how people want to get on with things. Which is really what Prince Philips life was. It was a life to the service to the crown and service to the queen. He was her husband and, yet, he had a role that he also filled. Yeah, this is what i think some people are realized after the programs mentioning him. He had service to the navy and then after marrying the queen before she became queen, he was still a captain and was going to carry on his career. But due to the passing of her father at a much younger age than expected, his career then came to a stop and then he became her husband who had to just follow. I think this is where he is an incredible man where he has found ways to function and there was no Program Given to him as now what your job is going to be this or that or the other. He had to make it up. He is an incredible brain that i think you know the technical side, he loved engineering and things like that, so he really was useful and when they held redo Windsor Castle from just being an old victorian place to their home, he was very much involved in thachlt people have talked about his humor which he always seems, i think to the little bit ive sort of seen of him in just on television and at, you know, Public Events on television, you know, he is often he is on which in the background so its hard to get a sense of what he was really like. People say he was funny. Funny and direct and i think people in this day and age will have a hard time understanding the directness of it. He didnt have to say very much but when he talked to you you got a very direct answer and very direct question. Was he funny with you . I didnt see much of him later in life because life is complicated and so forfeit. I do remember you asked him a question he had a sharp, quick answer to it. That nature. All of his i had been to a few events where i saw his grandchildren around and they dont joke about grandpa is coming through, be on your best behavior. They would all tease him and he would be great with them. Its a very human person but, obviously, you know, you also aware he didnt want to cross the line at the wrong time. What do you think his passing means for the monarchy . I dont think it changes anything for the monarchy per se because, obviously, the monarchy is run by his wife, the queen, and she is strong and the monarchy will continue. What will be different is that, obviously, that rock that was behind her is missing. And, obviously, to his sons and daughter and beginner, they will miss him dearly but it will no affect the continuation of the monarchy but somebody who has been there 70 odd years with her is a big deal. When someone dies at this age my mom died two years ago or so at age 95 obviously there is tremendous sadness one feels. But there is also just a celebration of what an extraordinary life to have been able to live so long and Prince Philips kids, all of the things he did, all of the things he saw, all of the things he took part in. He has a life to be celebrated. Because he has done so much. He has left a legacy that gives us real signs of how to live our lives and i think one of the great things he has left behind is an award that teaches young people how to go out there into the wild and learn about themselves a bit more and become more selfconfident and they do a lot of walking around, using maps, being helpful to other people. These are great, great work that he carried through. His relationship with the military, all of the young people coming in and out of the army has been an immense support and they will all milsss him a lot. The legacy is strong and i think we can all live by and very happy to. 99 years is almost a 100. Its very special. And to be so with it until the end. That is a blessing. So still be sharp and be, you know, part of life. We all knew that this day would come, but when it did come, i mean, i felt a real heavy in my heart which i didnt think i would because, you know, hes had great life and i wasnt seeing him so often, but its a personality that has just been very special to this world and we will miss him. But we thank him for the work he has done and wish his family all of the best. Thank you. Thank you. Prince pavlos of greece. Castle as we await the funeral for Prince Philip. Lets just listen in. Representing the Military Associations of the duke edin edinburgh. Philip intending to have a life in the military when he first married Queen Elizabeth. She was not then the queen. But that was not possible after her father died and she ascended to the throne. And youll see particularly today, youll see the Royal Marines represented until 2017, the last appointment he gave up, one of the last ones was captain general, so the Royal Marines playing a prominent role as well as the guards that was duke of the colonel. Lets bring in cnns National Correspondent Christiane Amanpour at buckingham palace. Extraordinary images there. You have covered The Royal Family a long time. What are your thoughts . Certainly on different occasions and big occasions. We have been talking about how this is pared down no fuss according to the dukes wishes and according to the pandemic. By any standards, its still grand. Look what youve been showing to the world the last half an hour or so. It is an amazing sight and what britain does so well, better than any other nation, frankly, in this kind of royal pomp and pageantry. I think more importantly they will pay The Last Post when his coffin is finally lowered. When it is lowered the naval plan will play Action Stations and the naval battle hymn and that is what is going to pay tribute to his service in the navy. And a service that he cut short in support of his sovereign. He had hoped to go on to a long military naval career. But very early, much earlier than they expected, King George Vi died. The couple had gone on a Commonwealth Tour and bid farewell to the king who came to the bottom of the plane to wave them off. Princess philip and duke of edin edinburgh. He died suddenly and they had not known he was in stage four of lung cancer. He had to break that news to the queen. He comes back. A few years later, he kneels in fronts of her in this televised coronation. It was an amazing sight. He takes off his own coronet and i will be your life of limb and early worship. Just to say he spent his whole life in service to this woman, to this sovereign and to this monarchy. The poet lasaid he is a husbandf duty. I think sums up him and his generation of the War Generation who believes so much in duty, so much in service. And who exemplified the ideals and values that were the basically of American Values and British Values and other values during the war time era. Some believe the laying to rest of this man nearly 100 years old perhaps foreshadowed that end of generation of service, of duty, of memory, of what was so hard and so fiercely fought. Anderson . Christiane amanpour, thank you. Kensington palace, Clarissa Ward is there. This funeral is bringing Prince William and Harry Together For The First Time in many months. Thats right. This will be the first time that the world has seen them together in over a year. The first time that they will have seen each other since prince harry moved to california and since, of course, that famous interview with Oprah Winfrey where he spoke openly about the rift between the brothers, about the strained relations. I think people will be watching very closely as the two of them walk behind the casket of their grandfather. There will be a separation between them in the form of Prince Philips Eldest Grandson peter phillips. For the brothers, themselves, Prince William and prince harry, they really want today to be about focusing on the memory of their beloved grandfather. Both of them had a very close relationship with Prince Philip and talked a lot about enjoying beers and barbecues as prince harry said. Prince william talked about his spirit of mischief and love of adventure and for them, they will want the focus to really be firmly on honoring that memory. Anderson . Funeral procession for Prince Philip begins very soon. Our coverage continues after a short break. The Duke Of Edinburghs coffin draped in a flag of his standard representing the difference stages of his life. National flag of greece and Black And White stripes of the family and his royal title, castle representing edinburgh. On top of the coffin, his naval cap. The duke became a lord admiral. The land rover is very special. Unusual to see it in a funeral such as this. Explain what it is. Well, he started work on it, Prince Philip, 18 years ago, just to show how long he has been planning this funeral. He changed the color to a Military Green because he wanted the military reflected throughout this service. You can see there the admirals cap of Prince Philip. A bouquet which was selected by the queen. A ceremonial sword over the flag there. We will about to hear the National Anthem which a poignant moment and then his closest staff lining up and then his royal family joining him. It will be very moving to see The Royal Family and then members of The Royal Family behind that. I think the tone is that this is the ceremony Prince Philip and that we will seal the queen for the first time as a widow, not a wife. Prince charles there. The prince of wales preparing to take his position, the primary position as the heir in waiting behind the coffin. You can see the members of his staff and his private secretary, his head of security and we can see prince harry well there in the shadows together. You have the members of The Royal Family. Prince william and prince harry celebrated by peter phillip, who is princess anns son. The palace will explain this is representatives of the children and grandchildren lining up behind the coffin and there are optics here about separating the two brothers, with tension. That is something the queen wanted to take attention away from so we are not going to dwell on it. No. Its about unity and really its very moving to see. We have heard the children talk about what a void of the loss of the duke will be to them. Moving to see charles and ann there who were so close to the duke and particularly ann. We feel their loss. The queen will also be leaving the state agency and joining part of the procession but take up the rear in her bentley and she will be joined by her top lady in waiting, lady susan who has always been by her side. She has always been by her side. A short procession. It will take about eight minutes at the top of The Castle Grounds here what is effectively the private quarters for the queen and they will go down the hill towards the chapel in this, what, kate, feels very much like a State Military but its a Military Funeral . Its not a State Funeral and very much a Military Funeral. This is commemorating the duke as a naval man and even his consort pushing the military Services First because it was such a priority for him. The work he did for veterans and really as much as we are saying his last engagement was with the war marines. As the procession continues, you will hear minute guns being fired from the kings troop, the Royal Horse Artillery when the east lawn opens the castle. One round every minute expected to take eight minutes in total. Julia, of course, watching prince harry and Prince William walking behind the casket of their grandchildren, one cant help but think back to the funeral of prince diana, their mother, as they walked behind the casket as well. Its a striking comparison. Clearly they are a lot older now and men in their own right but i grew up with that image of watching a 12yearold and a 15yearold following their mothers coffin. Once again, we should make the point here and we will talk about the fact that they have been separated by Prince Phillip and the queens oldest grandson but separated at that point and i think a important comparison. The loss here, i think, for them, as grandson we have heard it in the tributes they paid for him is truly profound at this moment. Not only for the entire family but for them having suffered throughout the life the way that they have. Harry has talked in the past about the horror of walking behind his mothers casket at the age of 12 years old. Yet, he clearly wanted to be here for this. Yes. Also you have to remember, obviously, he was wracked with grief at the time and it was Prince Philip the night before dianas funeral who said to both william and harry, if you dont walk, you will regret it for the rest of your life. And then they were still reluctant and he said, if you walk, i will walk with you. And his support was crucial, retrosp retrospectively, harry spoke about how dramatic it was, but i think that was sort of a significant that was a significant moment that showed how close those two boys were to their grandfather. Interesting that philip was giving parental advice in that sense. He actually was, early on, the queen, sort of handed over domestic life to him in her family . Yes. He was in charge of the childrens education . She wore the crown and he wore the trousers, as they said. But he was in charge of everything beyond her official life, including deciding where the children went to school and he was the chief disciplinaryian. He sat very high standards, but, yet, he was very compassionate. After his death, william and harry were down in school and they spent a lot of time with him and the queen, and they were hugely important. Separation between harry and his brother. You pointed out there was separation even when they were walking behind princess diana. Yes, and i think the other thing to remember as well, coming to harry, harry is one of the few royals who actually served in the military at the warfront, as did Prince Andrew in the falklands and harry in afghanistan. And so did the duke. The Duke Of Edinburgh actually was mentioned for what he did during the second world war. Veterans always have that bond, and i think thats an important thing to remember, that he also understood the Duke Of Edinburgh would have understood Mental Health, because princess alice, his own mother, had schizophrenia and was actually treated by sigmund freud. So he would understand anguish and Mental Health and effects of being on the warfront, and i think thats a side of him that isnt often thought about. Richard . We know that the procession of The Royal Family by zara phillips, we note that theyre not wearing uniforms today. A decision taken for a variety of reasons. The royal family, who are not part of the procession, are now waiting at the steps of the Great West Door where the coffin will be received. So members of The Royal Family, theyll all be there. And then, anderson, the coffin will be taken into a chapel to a pipers lament. The decision there was a lot of different reporting on the decision not to wear uniforms. Theyre wearing medals, but not uniforms. One of several reasons. One, harry wouldnt have had a uniform to wear since hes given back his honorary positions. The duke of york should have been an admiral, but hes not been made an admiral because of other issues. There are a variety of reasons, which is perhaps, some might say, sad, bearing in mind today is steeped in military. So Prince Charles wife, camilla. He will be received by members of The Royal Family, including the duchess, beatrice, the Commonwealth Defense Advisers. There is the queen. Shes not part of the actual procession. She will be going inside now. This is a poignant moment, because weve heard about her walking the corgis and taking great comfort with her dogs in the past week. But, really, this is the first time that weve seen her since the loss of the man that shes been with for 73 years. So theres an emotional response, i think, even just seeing her today. And i have to say, with all the pomp and procession weve seen, whether its a royal funeral or a royal wedding, i cant help but be drawn back to the land rover and what that says about the character of the man. Its striking, isnt it, as we watch his coffin making progress here . He was a very idiosyncratic and nonconventional person in many ways, while being exceedingly traditional. I think both of those themes will be presented in the service. When you say idiosyncratic, in what way . Well, that he would have a land rover hearst, for example, as opposed to the traditional case, which is what admiral mountbatten had for his funeral. But this is very much Prince Philip. He loved to invent things. He created a picnic cart. There are all sorts of things that he did. Also, he went his own way and he did his own thing. And even back in the beginning where there were concerns lets listen. The land rover arrives at the stairs of the Great West Door. The world navy piping party, pipes still as the coffin is taken into the chapel, where they will pipe and the pallbearers take their position along the steps. Also, there are the Commonwealth Defense Advisers from australia, canada, new zealand, trinadad. The coffin is about to be carried off the land rover and taken up the steps. Members of the royal Family Gathering at the bottom of those steps. The scene of so many historic moments over the years at Windsor Castle. Yes, obviously many people will remember harry and meaghans wedding and many happy occasions, and there have been many royal funerals. Its so striking to see the Duke Of Edinburgh. Its so sad to see The Royal Family commemorating him. A Moment Of Silence coming up, too. We are here today in st. Georges chapel to commit into the hands of god the soul of his servant, Prince Philip, duke of edin edinburgh. With grateful hearts, we remember the many ways in which his long life has been a blessing to us. We have been inspired by his unwavering loyalty to our queen, by his service to the nation and the commonwealth, by his courage, fortitude, and faith. Our lives have been enriched through the challenges that he has set us, the encouragement that he has given us, his kindness, humor and humanity. We, therefore, pray that god will give us grace to follow his example and that, with our brother philip, at the last we shall knows the joys of life eternal. A reading from the book ecclesiastics. Look at the rainbow and praise its maker. It shines with a supreme beauty, rounding the sky with its gleaming arc. A bow bent by the hands of the most high. His command speeds the snowstorm and sends the swift lightning to execute his sentence. To that end, the store houses are opened and the clouds fly out like birds. By his mighty power, the clouds are piled up and the hailstones broken small. The crash of his thunder makes the earth writhe. And when he appears, an earthquake shakes the hills. At his little, the south wind blows, the squall from the north, he scatters the snowflakes like birds, and they set off like a swarm of locusts. The eye is dazzled by their Beautiful Whiteness and, as they fall, the mind is entranced. He spreads frost on the earth like salt, and icicles fall like pointed stakes. A cold blast from the north and ice grows hard on the water, settling on every pool as though the water were putting on a float. He consumes the hills, scorches the wilderness. Cloudy weather quickly puts all to right and dew brings welcome relief after heat. By the power of his thought, he tamed the deep and planted it with islands. Those who sail the sea tell stories of its dangers, which astonish all who hear them. Strange and wonderful creatures, all kinds of living things, and huge sea monsters. By his own action, he achieves his end, and by his word, all things are held together. A reading from st. Johns gospel. Martha said to jesus, lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. And even now i know that whatever you ask from god, god will give you. Jesus said to her, your brother will rise again. Martha said to him, i know that he will rise again in the resserection at the last day. Jesus said to her, i am the ressurection. Whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this . She said to him, yes, lord, i believe that you are the christ, the son of god, he who is coming into the world. Resurrection. Resurrection test. Let us pray. O merciful god, the father of our lord, jesus christ, who is the resurrection and the life in whom soever believe shall live after he die, and he who believes shall not die eternally, who has taught us through st. Paul not to be sorry, as men without hope, for them that sleep in him. We meekly beseech you, father, that when we shall depart this life, we may rest in him, as our hope is this brother doth, and the general resurrection in the last day, we may be found acceptable in thy sight and receive that blessing which thy beloved son shall then pronounce to all that love and fear thee, saying, come, ye blessed children of my father, receive the kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of the world. Grant this, we beseech thee, o merciful father, through jesus christ, our mediator and redeemer. Amen. O eternal god, before whose face the generations rise and pass away, thy self unchanged. We bless thy holily name for all who have completed their faith and following and now rest. We remember before thee this day, philip, Duke Of Edinburgh, rendering thanks unto thee for his res lute loyalty, his high sense of integrity and life and service to the nation and commonwealth, and for the courage and inspiration of his leadership. To him, with all the faithful departed, grant thy peace. Let light perpetual shine upon them, and in thy loving wisdom and mighty power, work in the purpose of thy will. Through jesus christ, amen. To lay aside the fear of man and to be faithful, even unto death, grant that we, unmindful of worldly honor, may fight the wrong, up hold thy rule and serve thee until our lives end, through jesus christ our lord, amen. God save those suffering and all companions, living and departed, of the most honorable and noble order. Amen. O god of the spirits of all flesh, we praise thy holy name, for thy servant, Duke Of Edinburgh, who left valiant and true knighthood. Grant unto him the assurance of thy promise that thou will be with those who go down to the sea in ships and occupy business in great waters. And we beseech thy, that strengthened by his fellowship, we may at the last, together with him, be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom, through jesus christ, our lord. Amen. O lord god, where thou givest to our servants, grant us to know that it is not the beginning, but the continuing of the same unto the end, until it be thoroughly finished. Through him, who for the finishing of thy work, laid down his life, our redeemer, jesus christ. Amen. Almighty god, father of all mercies and giver of all comfort, deal graciously, we pray thee, with those who mourn, casting every care on thee. They may know the consolation of thy love through jesus christ, our lord. Amen. Go forth upon thy journey from this world, oh christian soul, in the name of god, the father almighty, who created thee, in the name of jesus christ, who suffered for thee, in the name of the holy spirit who strengthens thee. May this day be in peace and dwelling in the heavenly jerusalem. Amen. Please, almighty god, to take out of this life, unto his d divine mercy, the prince, phillip of edinburgh, the most noble order, knight of the most ancient and notable order of the thistle, upon whom had been conferred the royal victorian chain. And the blessing of god almighty, the father, the son and the holy spirit be with you all and remain with you always. Amen. Extraordinary service for an extraordinary life. We just saw Queen Elizabeth, philips wife of 73 years, just leaving the chapel now. Other members of The Royal Family, you see prince harry off on the righthand side, Prince William, kate middleton, Prince Edward as well, bowing his head, the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. Extraordinary moment not to actually we saw the casket starting to be lowered into the vault beneath the chapel, that was built by george iii, but the cameras, which we dont control, which are a pool camera, then did not show the actual Casket Lowering in. Thats such a personal moment that was just for the family, not on camera. Instead, they showed the pipe major playing the lament, then we heard the buglers sound The Last Post and sounding Action Stations, then there was the blessing, the National Anthem, god save our gracious queen. Richard quest, extraordinary for the way this was orchestrated, beautifully done. It had been prepared for a long time. Prince philip had overseen the preparations for it for years, and yet obviously because of covid, it all changed. How do you take an event thats been 30, 40 years in the planning, that would have had hundreds of mourners, thousands of troops, would have had a procession lasting 20 odd miles, and how do you take that and put it into one castle with 30 mourners . And theyve done it spectacularly and beautifully. Cnn correspondent max foster has been watching it all. Max . Poignant is a word thats often overused for these types of events, but i think its completely appropriate here, an incredible job that the palace officials did to try to put this together in these restrictions. The choir was incredibly powerful, the main body of the church so empty, and those incredible choir members giving an incredible tribute. The queen alone on that chair was incredibly difficult. Youve got to remember, this is the supreme governor of the church of england, deeply religious. This was a poignant moment for her. We didnt see the casket go down and i think that was a decision made between them and the Camera People in the palace. He is in his temporary Resting Place with other Kings And Queens in a large underground room in the chapel. This love story isnt over, kate, because when the queen passes, shell be married in her fathers chapel, and Prince Philip will join her there. So this love story isnt over yet. Yes, thats right. The queen will be buried where her father and mother and sister are, and for instance philip will be there with her. She will be united. It was incredibly moving to see the queen here, so powerful, poignant and heartbreaking to see her alone. No one able to hold her hand due to covid times. Such a powerful reminder of so many people across the world who have lost people over this past year and havent been able to mourn them as they would have wished. The queen so strong and without the comfort of her family. This is the next chapter for her. She will move forward without Prince Philip by her side. An era certainly ending, because the queen has dedicated herself to lifelong service, but the optics are different now. Hes not there alongside her. Were going to be seeing more of charles and william stepping up, representing her. She will continue to be head of state, but weve seen a change here, a moment in history, in British History, in royal history. Lets pause as we watch the queen, alongside the Dean Of Windsor, who officiated so effectively here. Shell get in her limousine and this will be the last we see of her for some time, i think. Were not being told, but i think she needs some time to how would you describe it, come to terms with this . Come to terms with such a great loss. This man shes loved for so many years, who has always been beside her, and really the fragility of human life. Before her mothers funeral she talked about celebrating her mothers life and mixing the sadness also with a commemoration of the long life of her mother and im sure thats how she feels now, shes full of sadness, but also seeing all the progress that has been done. When the duke married into The Royal Family some people werent convinced by him, they didnt think he would be a good consort. But he was so successful, the greatest consort, and really everything has been such a great success. That is a comfort for her. When Prince Philip knelt in front of the queen at the coronation, he made this promise, a vow to her to become your leigaman of life and limb. I will bear onto you to live all manner. And he lived up to that promise in the way that he wanted it to be acknowledged. He gave everything, he gave up his Naval Service and committed everything to supporting the queen and giving so much power to the monarchy. We just saw william and harry shoulder to shoulder, speaking to the clergy. I feel i dont know what you feel, kate. This did feel like Prince Philips service, it wasnt about the dynamics behind the scene. Were all hoping there will be some reconciliation as a result of this family crisis, which often is the case. I just want to say that the sussexs office have told me that the dutchess was very keen to be there. Shes watching the service, as we are. We saw the emotion on all the family members. Their comfort to each other. Lets focus on this moment. Weve got prince harry flanked by the duke and duchess. This is a very powerful moment, because these were eruptions through the monarchy, who has dominated the queens life, how to deal with the departure of the sussexes, and the key dynamic is always william and harry and it feels like reconciliation. Great unity. Theyre all pulling together to support their grandmother and support what shes been through and her loss. There they are altogether, The Royal Family. Theres no formality. Theyre talking. Breaking away there, chatting. It is a moment, a great poignant moving moment. Im sure theyre all heartbroken. We saw the pain etched on their faces as they went in. Theyve lost someone they loved so much and it was a life well lived and it was a life full of activity. Were so often told that these moments in front of the camera were orchestrated. This was an organic thing. They broke away together, in the name of for iPrince Philip. He was such a devoted grandfather. After the death of diana, he stayed to look after the grandsons. He has done so much for them. They are so devoted to him, and the loss is a great one, particularly to harry. Philip was Zooming Harry right up until the end, zooming archie, and i know its incredibly painful that philip wont be able to meet his 11th Grandchild who will be arriving this summer. That is so sad for harry. The royal family now going up to the more private part of the castle. These are the last images we will see told, im told by the palace. There may be some private engagements afterwards. Its a beautiful, sunny day here. The sun is shining on this moment. They will be able to be outside and have some sort of engagement and private time. Yes, ive heard there may be some people at a smaller wake, perhaps the queens cousin, princess alexandra. It was at her parents wedding where the duke and the queen first met. That really is such a poignant moment, the family, no one else, its just them and theyre celebrating the life of their father, grandfather and their great grandfather as well. And the castle sitting there in silence with just the key members, this is the queens favorite home. She invited the cameras in. Theres utter silence here. You could hear a pin drop. And a beautiful testament to a man that didnt want all the frills. It felt like there was frills, but that was him saying im a military man. This was a private, Family Affair they invited us into, and i think that speaks to the Queens Service, putting duty above everything else. She probably didnt want cameras there, but she knew that he was a public figure and we needed to share in that moment. Yes, this was about the Queens Service and dukes service. Im sure she would prefer not to have the cameras there. Its so private for her. Such a moving moment. But this was the movement which you recognize was also a public occasion. So painful for her. Ive seen on social media saying how hard it is to grieve in public, how painful it must be for the queen. And it was also about the duke, showing respect for his life as a military man and naval man and all the regiments hes been a colonel of. It was a moment to celebrate his life and commemorate how much he has done for the family. And really i think the enduring image that we will take of both the dukes funeral and covid times, is the queen there bearing her pain alone. Shes lost all the people she could be normal with, her mother, her sister, her father, and now Prince Philip. And we look to a new shape of monarchy, really, and well see much more of charles and william stepping into that role. The queen will remain the queen, but i think the monarchy will look like charles and william from now on. Max, we were seeing those shots of prince harry and Prince William, as you said, breaking off together from kate, who was also standing by. Do we know how long harry is staying . I know obviously theres no cameras now where the family is gathered, but of course one wonders, will they be meeting privately, will they is this actually some form or a first step in some sort of reconciliation . Well, it felt like it, didnt it . They didnt have to walk out together. And i have to say, you know, to have covered this story in recent months, the rift is deep. But people do come together in moments of crisis and it just feels like thats happened here. And i think thats probably an incredibly heartening thing for Prince Philip to see, looking down. Both sides of the family have said to me the rift is there, frankly, they arent in control of it. Only these two men can bring it together. I spoke to Close Friends of them and they said its down to these two guys now. It feels like something has changed. They do have private time. I dont know when theyre going back. I know harry does want to be back with meaghan, as shes pregnant, but they have an opportunity now to chat, start rebuilding, and im sure the duchess, im told by her office, was very keen to come over. So theres an opportunity in the future after the baby has been born, perhaps for the duchess to reconcile as well. Its been incredibly painful for the queen, of course, to see her family so publicly break up. Max, kate, thank you. Lets check in with our team in new york. Really an extraordinary service, an extraordinary moment for this family, for Great Britain and for all those who have followed this royal family for so long. And as we said, incredible how they were able to adapt it for covid times and come up with something unique, and yet really solemn and lovely. And beautiful. It was beautifully put together. The music was individual to what Prince Philip wished, the arrangements and the choir, i think the thing that struck me initially, when the service started, was the emptiness. I mean, this would have been an all ticket event that people would have been clambering to get into, with thousands of people, Tens Of Thousands of people outside. But to see the chapel empty, so that you had the space for the choir, the buglers and the state trumpeters was very significant. Even the staging of the choir, having four people, was extraordinary. And one thing i know the family would have wanted to make absolutely understood is that their grief today is being shared by Tens Of Thousands and hundreds of thousands of people in the uk and worldwide, who have lost people over the pandemic. Prince philip was 99 and lived a good life. And if you look at the messages that the family, the children sent over the last two weeks, it has been to reinforce that idea, that they stand and understand and stand with people. And, obviously, this is something which will be watched hugely in Great Britain. Oh, absolutely it will. Actually, the thing i took away from it all, was that basically every cloud has a silver lining. The fact that covid and the pandemic has been going on meant, for one thing, that the queen and the Duke Of Edinburgh had more time together, and also, i think in this past year . In this past year, much more than they normally would have done. And i also think the fact that everybody had to wear a mask meant they had some sort of privacy in their grief. And i agree with you, the Camera Angles and the camera shots were so beautifully done and they avoided honing in on and exacerbating peoples grief. And i think thats a really important thing, that behind a mask you feel you can cry or you can do whatever you want to do. If the cameras had been able to focus in on peoples faces, as you said, its very difficult to grieve in public. I think we saw the queen grieving there. Her head was down most of the time and the downside of the fact that they have this period of time where he was sick, but they were together during the quarantine period, is that she was alone in the church there, and i think that was just heartbreaking, quite frankly. And we barely even saw her look up. And i think actually, the point that you made about how we feel and how people in the uk feel about this moment, i think the moment of it is exacerbated by what everybody has been through, the loss of life with the pandemic, the separation from lo loved ones grandparents. This was a lot of pomp and ceremony by american standards, but very intimate by British Royal standards, you feel the emotion of a family in great pain. And even that shot right there, it tells you the loneliness that she feels. I think that the service itself was such a sort of distillation of who brittains philip was. Extras stripped down, but it had elements of his Eastern Orthodox heritage in the russian hymn. His faith, which was not ever sort of as known as the queens was as the supreme governor, clerics who knew him described him to me as having a very deep and thoughtful faith. When he was there, he would hop in unannounced to their six churches and he would just show up, and he would slip into a pew. And i remember talking to one of the directors afterwards, and he said he never nodded off. Every time after the service, he came up to me and asked me questions, in his typical probing way. But religion was very important to him. For his whole life, he pro noted interfaith dialogue and he understood the bible. I loved it that he used the very, very first version of the book of common prayer, and its also a way that he has a bond with charles. They both are searchers when it comes to matters of faith. In terms of the monarchy now, obviously the queen is still the queen, Prince Charles would be next in line. This rift between harry and william, does it impact the monarchy . I mean, obviously its a topic of discussion and, you know, certainly Tabloid Fodder in Great Britain. Does it actually impact the monarchy . It does in some ways. If you look at this and you look at the situation and the questions that were raised by it, the racial issues in particular, i think for people in the uk theres a sense that we were overlaying American Values onto an institution that, to be clear, has been around four to five times the length of americas existence. So i think the way that we look at this, and this is the way that well see the queen continue her reign and well see Prince Charles at some point take over, british people understand where this institution is concerned, for the most part, you wait your turn. So i do think that it matters to some extent in the handling of this, i think it will be pivotal, but will it ultimately change the monarchy in a fundamental way, no. But if you talk to the younger generationness the uk, this is incredibly important, because they dont understand richard, youre going to disagree with me, but i feel strongly about this. I agree with you as well. As you say, it is a pivotal movement because the monarchy risks being very out of step with what is happening internationally, and young people, especially and i do think theres a difference. I know youre shaking your head, but were oldies. Theyve always been out of step. It has. Were dealing with a media and you mentioned the tabloids and the media. These dramas have happened within royal families for centuries, but we havent had tweets and social media and cameras in on everything, which, you know, amplify everything 100 times. And i do think the monarchy has to change and i think william and harry both realize that it has to change. I would even say Prince Charles saw that. He was talking about changing the environment way before. Change is a dirty word. Evolve. Richard, you seem gob smacked. I remember hearing from one of the queens former private secretaries about her theory of monarchy, and you look at the jar from 50 years ago, and you think, oh, well, thats the orange and red and yellow and green marmite jar. But if you look at it today, youll see that its been tweaked in a lot of ways. And that is her approach. She keeps pace, but she doesnt keep too far ahead. She recognizes the need to tweak it. Theyre trying to explain marmite to our american audience. I cant even explain it. Very difficult. Its best not to. Its made of yeast. You have to be english to like it. What im hearing, and i thoroughly agree, The Royal Family does small shifts on the tiller, depending which way it needs to move. Princess margaret with peter towns end, after diana, the abdication, which of course was a grave crisis, but, again, they held steady to the cause and made slight course alterations. And i accept that today everybody wants you know, as the film the queen says, everybody wants the grand act. Everybody wants the big change. Thats not going to happen. Im guessing that whats going on behind the scenes and the sort of conversations that will happen over the next few weeks is how do we course correct. And thats what charles was talking about. Thats the way theyre going to move this forward. And im sorry for the Social Media World if they want a big bang, but its not going to happen. But its worth noting that after diana that it was Prince Philip who chaired the way ahead group, which was and i think he even said its arrogant of us not to make changes, and they did. He said, there are lessons that we can learn from diana. Well have more of this coming up, more on what this funeral means to The Royal Family and for The Royal Family and how theyll move forward without the patriarch. Na na na na na na na na. Hey hey hey. You are watching continuing coverage of the royal funeral of Prince Philip. An extraordinary ceremony that we have witnessed, the funeral of Prince Philip. The royal family now away from the cameras, inside in windsor palace. Lets go back to cnn royal correspondent max foster. Max, theres so much to kind of discuss about what we have witnessed, what is happening right now. What stands out to you from the funeral itself . I think that sense of a new phase in the monarchy, the queen on her own without her soulmate, but also her most trusted adviser, the person who was there right from the beginning, who always advised. And she nearly always took that advice, frankly, in terms of her professional role. And then behind the scenes, obviously he would run things and he ran the estate. Well see how much we see of her in the future. She will still define the monarchy, i think, and obviously the great difficulty weve had in the monarchy over the last year or so is these family crises. In the past, Prince Philip was the one who behind the scenes would bang heads together. Since he retired, he stepped back, i think, from that family role as well. And i think, frankly, a lot of people thought the queen acted late on the Prince Andrew and prince harry crisis. But eventually they found a new way of working, which is that Prince William and charles came together, which is interesting in itself, to try to manage those crises. And i think thats the new type of monarchy were seeing. Whats really important to everyone here is that harry and william fix this rift, and its deep and theyre both deeply hurt, and harry feels he was forced out of The Royal Family. William feels that he was desserted by harry. They were meant to be a joint face of that generation and hes not there. So seeing these images on your screen right now is enormously important constitutionally, because harry doesnt need to come back into his royal role, but they do need to work together. And william, Going Forward, needs someone to be able to confide in. And that man has to be harry, the guy he went through all of the personal crises with, and harry is the only person that understands william, truly. Obviously the duchess is very close to him, but throughout his life harry was there and he understands royalty and the duties that come with that. And i think kate, you would agree, that harry is fundamental to a future william monarchy. And harry, his life has been one of service. And i think this funeral being so focused on Military Service and Naval Service and army service would be so moving to harry, because of course his two tours in afghanistan, everything hes done with veterans with the Invictus Games and particularly how he has always wanted to be in service. He wanted to be half in and half out of the monarchy, which i do personally feel hell be given a chance and perhaps that will be the model in the future. Harrys support is so important to the monarchy and he is so needed. Charles, Going Forward then, anderson, how they prepare for the next monarchy. The queen is still super popular. Its safe as long as shes on the throne. Theyve got to find a way for charles reign to be as popular, frankly, and i think that needs to be a joint effort with william and harry. From Windsor Castle, lets go to buckingham palace. We have seen so many moving celebrations and ceremonies at Windsor Castle. Today a very somber and sad one, but also an extraordinary celebration of the life and the life of service that this man gave. Exactly, anderson. And it radiated outside of windsor. Here at buckingham palace, still with the pandemic rules, where they lived most of their married life, of course the union jacket is at half staff, but there were a lot of people that were allowed to come congregate outside the gates. They were standing in silence and it was really a moving thing to see this far away from Windsor Castle where the actual funeral took place. You know, you cant help remembering some of the things that were said and some of the things youve read about and watched about their life. And one of the things that struck me after the prince died, was a documentary in which it was explained that when he got married, he was this man who was going to have a really important naval career, be an admiral, carry on his war service. He was a hero during the war, they say during the invasion of s cisily. It was his thinking and actions that stopped his companys boat sinking. He was in the east as well, saw service there. But when he married the crowned princess, he said to his fatherinlaw, whats the job, how can you help me understand . And his fatherinlaw, King George Vi told him she is the job, Queen Elizabeth is the job. Thats what he gave his life to. He knelt in front of her during her coronation. He spent his Life Walking Two Paces Behind her. The two of them embodied what is ending now, and theres no doubt about it, they embody the war sense of duty, of service, of getting on with it, as weve heard so many times. Keep calm and carry on. That is not just a slogan. It is what this nation was about, ever since, you know, world war ii, and that is coming to a close now. Yeah, and this family carries on. Christiane, thank you. Youve got new information about Meghan Markle, who was not at the funeral today. Reporter thats right, anderson. She was not at the funeral, but the duchess of sussex did send a wreath which was reportedly made up of locallysourced flowers and she also sent a handwritten note. A lot of people have been putting a lot of speculation today on the rift in the relationship between Prince William and between prince harry. But i think when we saw that moment as they walked out of the chapel and they naturally sort began walking in step together, it really sent a message that this really transcends the sort of difficulties of fraternal relationships. The focus today is on honoring Prince Philip and honoring the memory of Prince Philip. And of course prince harry and Prince William both enjoyed a very close relationship with their grandfather. Prince harry talked about how they used to enjoy beers and barbecues together. Prince william talking about his wicked sense of humor and sense of adventure, and recalling how he would take his three children off on a horse and carriage ride with Prince Philip. And it seemed, watching those moments as they left the chapel together, that this was the point of focus today, not the relationship, not the sort of difficulties that have happened between those two brothers. But honoring this towering figure in both of those boys lives, anderson. Certainly grief and loss has a way to bring families together. Hopefully that will be the case this time as well. Clarissa, thank you so much. Well check in with you a little bit later on. Back with our team in new york. We were talking before about what happens to the monarchy and we were talking during the break about obviously Prince Charles is next in line for the throne.
