>> we work with ems. ems we work with. >> reporter: the police? >> the police, they need to work on themselves. there is a distrust. they have not corrected themselves. the way -- the police work for some people and not for others. >> reporter: the police chief who last may prayed at the intersection while the city raged over floyd's death says it's time for the square to open up again. >> if there is anyone who can -- who is over in that space what is saying that is truly about uplifting that intersection in his name, the violence is continuing, the homicides are continuing, i would disagree with that position. >> reporter: that will not happen easily. the community has given the city 24 written demands in exchange for opening up the square. >> if you miss those barriers without first providing restorative justice to the community, people are going to forget about the harm and the trama caused to this community. >> thanks to our sara sidner. it has been almost one year since we told the story of a 42-year-old teacher in questensn new york who passed away last march at the beginning of the pandemic when so little was known and the panic across the country was setting in. we spoke to joe's wife mora who moved so many of us with her husband and describing her unthinkable loss. she told us what happened and what she felt and spoke about what it was like to lose someone to a mystery virus, what it was like to say good-bye to the love of her life through the phone because of the fears he could spread the virus to her. >> i thank him for being the most amazing husband for making me feel cherished and loved every day. every day my husband wrote me beautiful letters in my lunchbox, what i meant to him and i thanked him and then i prayed and then the doctor took the phone and he said i'm sorry, but there is no more pulse. and then i played our wedding song for him. and then -- and then that was it. >> and mora is with me again tonight. mora, your story has stayed with me and so many over the past year around the world. is it even possible for you to believe that a year has passed almost a year has passed since you lost joe? >> hi, erin. it's so unbelievable it been an entire year. today actually marks the day he became symptomatic and this morning, i struggled so much to get ready to get out the door. packing lunches. because i thought about last year being our last normal morning on march 12th. like the typical. and then he came home not feeling well and from there it just snowballed. >> and you talk about packing lunches today. i mean, gosh, when we first spoke, of course, you know, mora, you said it didn't feel real. it would feel like joe is going to walk through the door and maybe working late and it was so raw and yet, a year later, does it still feel that way that he could still come home? >> not that he can come home but the rawness definitely presents itself at times. sometimes i find myself looking at him in a picture and just yelling at him for not being here because he's supposed to be here. when we are planning for events, i mentioned one of the times i was on with you that pretending that he's going to be here from all the events that he's going to miss and now they're all starting to happen and we planned for and that realization is very difficult to deal with. >> you know, we had a picture there of your kids with joe and a birthday cake and, you know, threat kids you have together. your twins are now 15. your daughter is 7. >> yes. >> birthdays have passed without their dad. you know, mora, your kids are incredible and you've told me how strong they've been and it just amazing at different points, how they have got you through this. have they shared -- i guess i'm trying to think of the way to ask this to you. what have they done to help you through this because i know they have in so many ways. >> yeah, their amazing kids. they bring this light to a room, they make me smile, they make everyone smile just like their father always did. jack is always singing and we're always dancing all together and eve is funny and maddy is whitty, so whitty and they just cheer you up. you can't be sad around them. if i am sad, they are so supportive and so good. i can't say enough good things about them. they just -- a lot of us -- a lot of the time we spend being distracted. that gets us through the day. madison with her school work and friends and jack with his friends and school and he's keeping himself very busy making these cardboard creations that are just incredible and eve too is constantly busy. she wants to be outside with her friends and playing roblox and on face time with their cousins. they always want to be doing. they are not looking for pity or people to be sad for them. they love the support that they get and we're so supported by our community and our family. and they just are always these bright lights like i always said. >> you know, you talk about your community and i know joe taught at the mary lewis academy in queens, a girls school where he was so beloved and they started a fund in his name. i know it matters a lot to you so tell me what it means to you? >> just to keep his legacy alive and to know that so many people care and loved him, not only does the mary lewis academy have a student life fund in his name but the college that we both graduated from, st. joseph's college established a sch scholarship in his name for future educator. different awards through the athletic association and other things he's been part of in his memory. even a student reached out is a new york city remembering the covid victims this sunday and his former student reached out and asked if he could be part of that and she filled out the application and put his name and picture in. all these little acts of k kindness and remembrance of him means so much to us because all i want to do is honor my husband. i feel like i can't do enough. his birthday passed february 2nd. and to honor him, i established an email that was dedicated just to stories. >> yeah. >> people could tell, stories and memories people could tell about them and joe and the impact he's had and it
