Omar jimenez, menendez and the president of the Transportation Safety board. Reporter they were picking up pieces from this engine, and pieces were actually flying from the sky to neighborhoods below. While there were some fragments, these were large pieces, chunks that were falling, damaged trucks as we saw, but also could have destroyed homes, people or at least injury them, and somehow that never happened. While people were focusing on the ground, they haieard a boom and saw that engine was obviously missing. The flight was bound for honolulu but luckily they werent over the ocean when this happened, so they promptly turned around and were able to land safely. I know people get made fun of when theyre clapping, but this time they were being guided by the passengers and crew through all of this, and now it lies in the hands of the national Transportation Safety board to figure out how this could happen. Mary, investigators want to get their hands on all the pieces because these are the clues to figure out exactly what happened, that along with hearing the Flight Recording from the pilots. What will they be searching for exactly . Well, the ntsb issued a very important report just last year about inspecting the fan blades on jet engines just like this, and that was based on a United Airlines incident in 2018. And the ntsb concluded that the manufacturer had not trained for inspections, so there were flaws in the blades on the engines, and from pictures i saw from passengers on the plane, it does appear there was a fan blade, at least one broken or missing, so the ntsb will already be at the scene, armed with this previous investigation they just finished in 2020, and theyll be looking for every piece because they have to know if the flawed engine had been there for many years, its a 20plusyearold plane. They dont know if the engine was there all this time, but was it a smoking time bomb, if you will, or was it something that happened a lot recently and was it missed in inspection . So with similar incidents that have happened, they will be comparing them. Pete, these are big planes. When were talking about engine failure, talk to us about the readiness of these pilots so they can continue to fly these planes hopefully with one engine. Its such a testament for these pilots training because they do this all the time in simim simulators. Thankfully these flight crews are very professional and run through this all the time. Its incredible to see these smoke images coming from the airplane. Its more like an f2 bomber. Not only do they have to figure out the boom that omar was talking about, but then they have to go through the procedure, make sure everything is right, and they have to drill on this, make sure they can do it automatically. I just played back some of the air control audio recording, and you can actually hear some of the 777s fire alarm system, and it really talks about how quickly they had to spring into action . Is this coincidence . Youve got the commonality here of boeing. They are different models, but both within hours separate from each other have pieces falling from the engine. Its not a coincident when you add that japan Airlines Incident in 2018. The ntsb will be looking for this because. The ntsb doesnt exist just for what wrong in this case or to troubleshoot. Theyre trying to check out things in the inspection. Its the same manufacturer, pratt whitney, and theyre approximately the same age. Coincidence goes out the window, and what the ntsb will be doing will be doing is tracking the original problem. More than 14 million residents, about half the states population, still without clean water. They remain under a Boil Water Advisory after frigid temperatures broke countless water pipes, the Severe Weather to blame for at least 50 deaths, in several states, in fact. For the very latest, lets bring in natasha in houston. You have the mayor as well. Reporter thats right, the city has given out more than 2 million bottled waters to people here in houston. People are running out of water and there is still a boiled water notice. There is still a boiled water notice. We were shooting to get that lifted on monday. It could be sooner. The system has normalized, the pressure is good, and based on our internal sampling, i think things are good, but were waiting on the state to give us a green light. That literally could happen sooner than later. I said monday, but maybe before. There are still thourz of families across the eun pment. They are it. So you are talking about people having trouble getting those pipes fixed. Youre dealing with a statewide crisis. Its not just people in a city, this is statewide. If you can find a plumber, ive made a request to fema for supplies and also water. You say its important for a person to check to make sure the person theyre hiring are licensed from wherever they are. You would like to think that people represent themselves to be who they are, but its very important that they are licensed. Just because someone says he or she is a plumber, dont put out the money that you have and end up not getting your home repaired. Yesterday we visited a home in puff, their perception they told. They are in stasers with hurricanes, now after the storm with water schls. Based on a historical president , that is the case. I grew up in one of those communities. I still live in that same neighborhood. So in many cases, that has been the case. But we in this city have been laser focused to make sure we have equity in everything. So the power has been restored across were being rlt snchlt they suffered horribly from the coronavirus, from the fires and now the blackouts. We see them. Were very sensitive to the need. We dont want those at risk to be vulnerable and on the back end of anything. So were going to do our very best to make sure there is equity in distribution, just like on this water distribution. Yesterday Mass Distribution in co color. Weve been all. I do pd. P. As he mentioned, a green light from the state could be coming soon to lift the boil notice water here in houston. Already as of this morning 150 million boil notices have been lifted across the state. 50 million texans are seeing Service Disruption time, fred. Shasta, chen, appreciate it. Congresswoman general flesher, thank you formal. Thanks for including me today. Absolutely. Whats happening where you are . How are you doing . How is your family . Do you have light and power if youre in your home . My family is doing fine, all things considered. We, like so many people across our city, has had some busted pipes. We were in power 1078. But we feel thankful we had a little bit of notice. My parents went out first so i was able to fill that bathtub. Although we do have some of the jurisdictions in our Congressional District as well where those bhoichld, but this water cry recall weve been working with city councilmembers, with Harris County commissioners, to make sure people across our Community Get bottled water, Drinking Water and rlt. Clearly you know twha, but beyond the energy stuffed. Do you feel like as a whole texans were caught off guard, not ready for this kind of weather . Yeah, its a great question, and i think there is a cascading series of failures here. As one person i talked to recently put it, this was like a hurricane out in the gulf. And, in fact, thats how i responded to it. I had a bag ready for hurricanes that has a weather radio, and lamps in it and emergency candles. I didnt need the off this time, but i went and got a bag and filled up my bathtubs. We didnt have the kind of notice for a hurricane even though i think there was a real power loss, as well as real risks to the real grid. The catastrophic Power Failure was multiplied by an inability to communicate with customers and that were without water. We really have to make an adjustment. We have to review this and see what failed. I think there are failures at every level but also failures of government and paying attention to information weve had for years and what we need to do to protect not just our grid but our citizens and neighbors in the state of texas. How will you go about evaluating . Texas State Leaders have not pushed utilities to winterize the grid, the power plants, the power lines in the past. Youre calling in to ercot for starters which runs the power grade. What can congress do in this reevaluation . Thats right, the come. This is the early report of our. The ferc evaluated a failure in texas ten years ago and had several recommendations, including winterization of our equipment. Weve seen the way the texas equipment is under designed, and we dont really have excess capacity to bring costs down, but weve seen the costs in the last week in lies. Weve seen the incredible devastation of Power Bin Terms F capacity issues, and we need to look at the oversight regulation. The Texas Legislature oversee not just ercot, but the public utility commission. We need to see that there are affordable standards, and what our country can do is talk about the best practices, but also we need to look and see what all these systemic failures are. Here in texas, i think that our number one priority is keeping people safe. This is our First Priority in government and our texas government failed us this week. One of your constituents is senator ted cruz, and you said in response to his trip this weekend, leadership matters. Is his apology enough . Well, i really havent focused on senator cruz this week, buzz what im seeing , we just saw mayor turner who has been such a champion this week, and mayors, city councilmembers, county commissioners. The local leader is doing this at a time when its really difficult for local governments. There are some real structural problems we need to focus on here in texas when it comes to o ourly. I saw a federal, state and local gove government. Im working with our division of National Management which is working for fema. There is a way not only two bumt. That is what we hope and expect to see from our leaders at every level. Im really proud of our here roepz. They are talking about members of congress and the u. S. Senate, and, you know, youre with us right now. Weve seen other members of congress who have been on the ground helping to distribute aid. But then there have been some that we havent heard or seen much of, including senator john cornyn. Have you heard much about his whereabouts, his commitment and where he is . I havent been in touch with senator cornyn, either. Ive been in touch with other members. Weve had calls with texas management every morning, and ive heard colleagues on those calls as i am, so i know that our delegation is very engaged in responding to our communities. There are so many things the federal government can do in moments like this, and one of the critical pieces is distributing aid, and i led my colleagues on thursday in urging President Biden to sign the major Disaster Declaration as quickly as possible, which he now has done. And hes visiting texas this weekend. Do you think its particularly important for the president to see firsthand where the need is and to show his invoicing. I did. E he wants to come at a time when he is not disrupting our recovery. Its important people are seeing that, that the president of the United States understands the devastation here and is doing everything he can to help. Im glad to see the response from President Biden. He has been on top of this since before the weather hit, signing that initial Disaster Declaration. I think its really important for folks in texas to see that and to see that help coming. The u. S. Is set to surpass half a million coronavirus deaths. What we can do to improve. Dr. Anthony fauci says americans may have to wear masks into 2022 in order to protect against the coronavirus. The nations top Infectious Disease expert saying the u. S. Could reach some level of normalcy by the end of the year. I think you always want to be prepared for that type of thing. I dont think its at all inevitable that that will happen. The way you mitigate against that are two things. You continue to abide by the recommendations of wearing masks, avoiding crowded situations, washing our hands, the things that we speak about all the time. Thats a very good way to prevent any infection, be it a variant or not. The other thing thats important that our viewers should appreciate is that the vaccines that we are currently distributing now, the moderna and the pfizer vaccines, work very well against the u. K. Variant, the 117. So the better we do at getting vaccine into peoples arms as quickly and as expeditiously as possible, that will be another important tool against preventing this additional spike that we want to make sure does not happen with the u. K. Variant. Youve been very open about the fact that youve been skipping holidays with your family. Youre fully vaccinated. Are you seeing your family . Right now not yet. Not yet. I mean, i would look forward to it within a reasonable period of time as the rest of my family gets vaccinated. Obviously, im with my wife every day. She has gotten her first dose, will soon get her second dose. But my children, when they get vaccinated, obviously i look forward to seeing them, and im sure by that time recommendations will come out and guide us in a more precise way. California is a state hit hard by coronavirus. The governor, gavin newsom, talking now. Today we recorded just over 6,700 cases. A month ago we had over 20,000 cases. In all instances, positivity rate, case rates, were moving in the right direction. Were also moovrving in the Rig Direction as far as hospitalizations. Hospitalizations are down 40 in the last two weeks, 39 reduction in the icus in the last few weeks. All encouraging signs. Were building out a Supply System that can allow us to administer 4 million vaccinations a week. Were currently averaging 200,000 vaccinations. In fact, as of yesterday, 201,000 vaccinations every single day. We did 1. 4 million last week, but i want to put that into perspective. We received less than that from the federal government last week. Our only constraint now supply limitation, manufactured supply. Obviously the impacts of this extreme weather have had an impact here in the state of california as it relates to our supply. 702,000 doses were impacted specifically, primarily moderna doses. Pfizer is a little bit delayed. Modernas, were going to be behind a little bit more, but that 72,000 is over the course of those administered. Were building out. These contain fema sites that went operation emergency. We used our teachers in the organization utilizing these popup sites. We also have 200,000 doses next month for our educators as well, starting with 7,000 set aside for educators. Weve been prioritizing. Educators are doing that. 37 counties have previously been prioritizing the administration of vaccinations to their teachers, including long beach, and a perfect example, 41 other counties in addition to the work being done in that city. Nonetheless, we recognize our responsibility to do more, not only cross tiers, getting our teachers, but focusing on fire markers. We were focusing on farm workers and popup sites in partnership with ranchers and with farm managers. Were also doing the same in central valley, in moderna and pfi pfizer. Ment. Efficiency, a focus on delivering, not on a platitude but a promise were going to do better. We put out a dashboard a few weeks ago that aggregated about a week ago, that aggregated our capacity in terms of what we have delivered to our adverse communities, and it showed were falling short, and we have to own that. The reason im here is we own that. We recognize our responsibility to do more. Were not doing enough. We need to do significantly more programs like this. California governor gavin newsom there saying california covid cases are down significantly. Im quoting him now, they are moving in the right direction. Cnns Paul Kervercammen is in o of those popup sites. Tell me more, paul. Reporter it was interesting to observe firsthand the joint office of fema and california services. They split off from the Max Vaccination Site in cal state los angeles, and they went in this community from englewood, an underserved community. The idea, clearly, is to get more shots into the arms of africanamericans as well as latinos. So Governor Newsom came here on this tour, and he said if you go elsewhere to observe this, you may know the government is under mire. Some people have criticized him, some have applauded him and hes trying to allay peoples fears. He said hes setting aside 10 of future vags. And some are saying lets reopen schools. Its a fiery debate, so the governor is here to address a whole myriad of Covid Concerns and issues and policies in california. Paul, will there be more of this effort to bring Vaccination Sites to vulnerable areas, many dont have the time to come to that area. Thats exactly right. Because Los Angeles County is such a crazy quilt of different operations, somewhere on the radar this week eeg did need help. They had a site and served an underserved community, and you said when Dodger Stadium is up and running, they can help stabilize this issue. And were seeing more and more popup sites. These Evacuation Tents will be skmeer then mover the. If they can just catch their breath because of the inability. Very good twheek we can. The vax wags sites, we did hear from the governor who said its all still a problem. A lawyer for jessica watkins, one of the leaders of the ohio oath keepers Militia Group now says that she was invited to the trump rally back on january 6 to provide security for vip guests. She also now claims that she met with the u. S. Secret service before the event. Cnns kaitlyn is tracking this story from us. Kaitlyn, what are you learning . Reporter this is a file we got from the defense team for jessica watkins. She is a defendant in the insurrection case. She is part of the Extremist Group that the justice is saying took part in the rally, but she was not involved in the riot, that she was given a vip pass, that she would be escorting people to the rally and that she met with secret security agents. We dont know the context of that and what she means by that, there wasnt much detail for us. This is what they said today. To carry out its protective functions on january 6, the u. S. Secret service relied on the assistance of various government partners. Any assertion that the Secret Service employed private citizens to perform those functions is false. Now, remember this comes in a case against nine alleged members of the oath keepers Militia Group, and really there are more questions that are being raised about what this group was doing, what they believed they were doing. Some of them, including watkins, said they believe they were responding to the call of president trump, that they were exmilitary and they believed they were offering some sort of Law Assistance to trump in the situation where there was an Electoral College in congress, confirming the electoral vote. But, really, there are a lot of questions that remain. We will see Watkins In Court On Tuesday where the Justice Department will have a chance to respond to these claims. Fred . The city of houston Just Announced that it will lift the boil water notice effective immediately. Residents there have been without water since wednesday. President biden is expected to travel to texas in the coming days following that devastating week of below freezing temperatures and winter storms. The conditions causing widespread Power Outages across the state that impacted millions of homes and businesses, well, its impacted 14 Million People still without clean water. Amid the tales of people struggling to survive, this heartwarming story shows that texas hospitality is a real deal. Two strangers took in a Delivery Driver for five days after she got stranded outside their home while delivering groceries. Joining me right now is this amazing trio, the Delivery Driver, chelsea timmons, and the two homeowners, Elena Richardson and doug condon. Good to see all of you. You, too. A warmup story. Boy, do we need that. Chelsea, you first. How did all this happen . What was going on . As you said, it was just routine grocery delivery. There was definitely a high demand of groceries that day as everyone prepared for the winter storm. Nina and dougs delivery was actually scheduled for saturday after this storm hit. The stores were so overwhelmed they couldnt get everything out. Sunday there was a backlog of groceries to go out and their order was one of them. It was the one that i happened to accept that day. Oh, my gosh, so here you are about to make this delivery, youre on this road. Now, what happened that you got stuck . Describe what happened, and that i understand you did call for tow help, but that didnt happen, so fill in the blanks for me. So i got a text from them. I told them i was on the way. I got a text from nina saying, be careful, the stairs are slippery. So i had that in mind the whole time as i was headed to their home. Their home actually sits lower than the main road and their driveway is a Pretty Steep Slope going downhill. I went down the hill very slowly, trying to be very cautious, but every time i tapped the brake, nothing was happening, and i closed my eyes as my car just slid down the hill into their flower bed. After that, i called them, i told them what happened. We called the tow truck and waited for hours. And then they never showed up. Finally that evening they called and said that the conditions had worsened, that nobody could get to me. I actually never received a call back from the tow company until wednesday, i believe, is when they finally called me back. Oh, my gosh, so, nina, here chelsea is making delivery of these groceries to you, shes gone through all this. Now she cant get out of there. Your instinct, i understand, was near immediate to just say, why dont you stay here . Oh, for sure. There was no way we would have sent her out into the cold. And so we just said come on in and make yourself at Home Upstairs in the guest room, and she sat at the table for a little bit and seemed really uncomfortable, so we kind of over time things warmed up quite a bit and she ended up just kind of fitting into the rest of the family and we treated her like everybody else. Oh, my gosh, im looking at these great pictures. Chelsea, you got to know the dogs. You all are like immediate family. So, doug, tell me what this whole experience was like, i mean, what you all were bracing for and then come to find out you get this gift of a New Friendship all by way of you all trying to get some groceries in the house. Yeah, im sure, like everyone else in texas, we had no idea how bad it was going to be, but we were watching the conditions on sunday and it was just getting worse and worse, and we just knew that it was unlikely that chelsea was going to go anywhere sunday night. And then one day just kind of if she wasnt going to get any assistance from a towing company, swernl were not going to put her back on the roads until we felt entirely comfortable the conditions were safe for her to head back home. Chelsea, you must have been shocked initially when they said stay here. Was it shock you were feeling . Was there ever any reluctance . Did you feel like, well, i dont know what my choices are otherwise anyway . There was always just a sense for me to try to make sure i was showing them i wasnt trying to bum, wasnt trying to invade their space for too long. I definitely, every day, every morning before i left my my room, i had to come up with a strategy. Let them know what i was doing. Every day when i presented it to them, theyre like, okay, whatever. And i definitely tried to make a break for it a few times. I just kept saying, the roads are a little more clear today. I think i can at least head out to a hotel. I think once they found out that homehome for me was all the way in houston, thats when they were just like, a hotel how far is that from where you were . They live in west austin, so it was about a threehour drive. Oh, my gosh so typically i come to austin and just stay the weekend. I already had plans to head back home that afternoon before this happened. And every time i suggested just trying to make it to the hotel down the street, they were just like, well, what would you eat . What if the hotel loses power . Just wait until its clear for you to make it all the way back home. Oh, my gosh, that way harrowing, all the way. So, nina, something tells me you all are now fast friends, forever friends. You know, its funny because we have two grown daughters, sarah and campbell who a lot of times tease each other about who is the favorite child and day four we get a text from campbell and shes like, oh, great, chelseas now the favorite child. Thats wonderful. Well, thank you so much. Thanks for coming to each others aid because you all helped each other out in the end, right . Didnt you . Chelsea timmons, nina richardson, doug condon, thanks to all of you, thank you. I love hearing the story. Really nice. Well be right back. Thank you. burke at farmers, we know how nice it is to save on your auto policy. But its even nicer knowing that if this happens. Or this. Or even this. Weve seen and covered it. So, call 1800farmers and get a quote today. We are farmers. Bumpadum, bumbumbumbum if you smell gas, youre too close.
